    Book Description

Mathew Lyons traces the influence of England and its landscapes in J.R.R Tolkien's world famous novels. Written from both the perspective of an avid Tolkien fan and a historical/literary interest in mythology and the influence of the landscape on Tolkien's work, Lyons follows in the footsteps of Tolkien through England, identifying the places that most arguably influenced Tolkien's creation of "Middle Earth".

5 out of 5 stars A journey into history and myth.......2004-06-07

Anyone who is remotely interested in Tolkien - especially why and how he came to write something as extraordinary as Lord of the Rings - would really enjoy this book. Lyons takes you on a series of journeys through the English countryside that Tolkien loved and which inspired his work, explaining the kind of history and myths that surround them and how they relate to Middle Earth. He also visits the places where Tolkien lived and shows - a bit to my surprise to be honest - how personal Tolkien's work was. It's changed the way I look at Lord of the Rings quite a bit, in fact.
It sounds weird, but this is actually quite a personal book - you really get to relate to Lyons since he tells you about his own teenage obsession with Tolkien - sometimes embarrassing though it was - and how that has changed as he's got older and got kids himself now. He's not afraid to have some humour at his own expense - even a bit at Tolkien's, which is pretty rare in a book on the man. And he clearly knows his stuff about Tolkien and the sources he drew on.
More than anything it really makes you want to get on a plane and explore England the way Lyons has done and Tolkien did!

5 out of 5 stars The Land That Inspired Middle Earth.......2004-05-14

Peter Jackson's triumphant victory at this year's Oscars has left most of us dazzled. It was a fitting reward for his epic eight-year quest to put The Lord of the Rings on film. For better, or worse, the films released a tidal wave of emotions from the legions of Tolkien readers world-wide. I admit to being one of those who first saw the films and then went to read the books. I am glad for the effort, because it introduced me to the vast legendary world of Middle Earth as it was meant to be experienced, unabridged and totally in the mind's eye. To settle all the debates and misgivings surrounding the adaptation of Tolkien's work, Philippa Boyens, co-writer of the script, stated that the films are what they are-an interpretation by one group of devoted fans. The books, however, are timeless.

As a historian, I became keenly interested in learning about J.R.R. Tolkien and his motivation to write Lord of the Rings. It didn't take long to discover that Tolkien opposed such inquiry to understand an author's writing. To him, the finished story was the important thing, not the whims of the writer or the vague notions that prompted the imagination. Above all he despised allegory. In typical Tolkien fashion, however, he admitted that one could not help but to be influenced by life's experiences. As a consequence, most authors only mention in passing the actual locations about England that may have influenced Tolkien's creative genius. Tolkien felt a keen attachment to nature, however, and it seems this remained a weak point in the many scholarly works about this great author-until now.

There and Back Again-In the Footsteps of J.R.R. Tolkien by Tony Lyons fills the gap in style. As part of the well respected Cadogan travel series, the author visits places throughout England where Tolkien visited and contemplates their influences on his writings. "What I set out to do then," he states, "was less to map Middle Earth onto contemporary England and give Ordnance Survey grid references for the fords of Bruinen or the Dimrill Stair, and more to search for the origins of ideas. I was looking for places that, whether because of their natural beauty or their histories or their emotional significance to him, became charged with creative meaning for him. While the world that finally emerged into print in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is obviously central, I was still interested in the ghosts that lay beneath it, as much for Tolkien's evolving approach to England as for the places themselves....The relationship of all these writings to England, or to ideas of England, an shed a great deal of light on the way Tolkien thought and felt about his country, and how he sought to memorialize it in the extraordinary and original way he did."

What follows is a series of chapters each devoted to a specific location where Tolkien visited at some point in his lifetime. By referencing what is known about Tolkien through his own writings and commentary, Lyons builds an impressive case for each location. Along the way he explores an evolution of thought concerning his own relationship with the books from childhood into adulthood, and Tolkien's own progressions as he evolved his legends. Of interest are the many references to early, unpublished drafts that many Tolkien readers will not have read.

Throughout the book we can see the three influences that defined Tolkien's life-a love of country and nature, a closeness with ancient peoples and history through a love for languages, and a desire to wash away the mythological influences of the Norman conquest and establish a tradition of legends entirely for England. Lyons demonstrates that this quest, and the legends Tolkien derived to satisfy his vision, came from the heart.

On his tombstone that he shares with his wife Edith it reads:

    Edith Mary Tolkien, 1889-1971. Luthien.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, 1892-1973. Beren

The names are derived from Tolkien's central myth of Beren and
Luthien about a love so powerful that the elven Luthien laid down her immortality to follow the mortal Beren. Indeed, Tolkien later said it was the most important legend from The Lord of the Rings. It was something he first imagined in 1917 while recovering from trench fever, stationed at Humber Garrison near the small town of Roos. Edith and their newborn son where staying in the village. One evening she met with Tolkien in a small wood outside the town, and with her newborn son sang and danced in the twilight amongst the trees. It was here Tolkien claimed the first ideas for the legend of Luthien first came to him. It was a legend that Tolkien would return to and rewrite over and over for the rest of his life. It was here that Tony Lyons chose to begin his book, and show us the man, his beliefs and legends were inseparable.

The author's trail leads us from the woods near Roos to burial mounds on the Berkshire Downs, a Roman temple on the Welsh border, the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, Oxford and Sarehole, Fonthill in Wiltshire and many more. The creation of Ents, the ideas for Hobbit holes and the Shire, the origins of The Voyage of Earendel, ring wraiths and Mordor, they are all here. In each place we feel a little closer to understanding Tolkien and his inspirations.

Finally, one comes away with an appreciation that Tolkien's England is under siege of urbanization. Much as in America, the quiet towns and villages, the old roads and sleepy streams are in danger of being completely lost to modernism. With an eye for the England of Tolkien's era, Tony Lyons accounts for the England that remains. There and Back Again is a deeply moving analysis of Tolkien, his work, and the country that inspired The Lord of the Rings. This book should not be missed by anyone wanting to know more about Middle Earth and its incredible, unique creator.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-17

Actually, in some ways I hate to tell others about this books, as obviously not that many people have read it. The less people who read this book, the less competition for me in the microcap arena. This is really a well-researched book. For example, it mentions that the volatility of a stock portfolio keeps dropping until microcap stocks make up almost 1/2 of it. The author also mentions that this is not possible for managers of huge funds to invest this way--but it is possible for the small investor. I think there are only a very few books on microcap investing, and only one other has relatively good reviews. This book, unlike others, is not about making it big with penny stocks--but rather about microcap investing--which by different definitions just means that the capitalization of a given firm is under a given amount. At an rate, this is a field where the small investor can make money that is not available to managers of mutual funds.

If you are looking for a logical formula to make your quilts pop every time this is the book for you. I was not disappointed. I found it one of the most useful of quilting books I have ever purchased outside of the ones that actually teach you how to quilt. Every serious quilter should have this book in their personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Really usefull and easy to understand and apply.......2007-03-19

I studied color theory in college, traditional (kinda boring) way. It was quite complicated to use.
This book brought me a new way to see color theory. It has many visual reference, wonderful tips, inspiring ideas, cutesy illustrations and even brings projects, it will be useful for years! And make soooo easier to use the theory... Loved it!

5 out of 5 stars THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COLORS.......2007-03-08

This product give us the oportunity of learn how to choose the correct combination of colors and fabrics used in our quilts.

5 out of 5 stars Great explanation of color theory.......2006-11-16

This is a great addition to any new or old quilter's library. Not only does it have the color wheel that is an easy reference, it also has broad examples of fabric that coordinate, accent, and compliment. The color wheel teaches the relation of solid colors to eachother. Rarely do we use a fabric that is one solid color. This book takes it one step further and teaches your mind to see the actual color of the fabric beyond the print/pattern/shade/tint/tone so that you can choose appropriate coordinating fabric for your desired affect.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all quilters.......2006-11-07

This is a wonderful book for new and not so new quilters. It has excellent illustrations and examples of how to mix colors. I will keep this on my shelf for years to come. I would highly reccomend this book for new quilters. Great information right at your fingertips.

After two centuries of gardens being full of exotics that escape and take over the native forests, it's time to start bringing the natives back into the cities. This book really shows how to do this in a quick and easy way.

The book is easy to read and offers great advice on nutrition. The book is not exclusively for the endurance athletes but can be use by anyone.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2004-03-04

Ellen's book is the most concise, clear, and thorough explanation for nutrition for endurance athletes that I have found to date. Her writing style is easy to read and comprehend, her information is well supported, and her nutritional approach is realistic for work-a-day athletes. As a back-of-the-pack to midpack triathlete, I was able to come away from reading this book with a better understanding of how nutrition impacts performance and come away better armed for the upcoming triathlon season.

Thru Ellen's insight, guidance and words, ordinary people have another tool to accomplish extraordinary things. To complete long distance events, nutrition can make or break you. I have run ultramarathons, competed in Ironman triathlons, and ventured into other fun things like the Mojave 250 mile Death Race. I trust Ellen's words and guidance in fueling my body to go the distance.

This book provides a simple, holistic, easy-to-use set of guidelines regarding appropriate nutrition for endurance athletics. It's a subject that needn't be over-complicated to get right. Nutrition is right up there with religion and politics for evoking fervent reactions, but if you want to skip the fads, fringe plans, and diets-of-the-week, this is an excellent tome to eat by.

5 out of 5 stars Eating for Endurance.......2006-09-03

In my 20-plus years of working with athletes, the key part of my methodology has been to provide information to help individuals understand how to find the approach that works the best for him or her, as opposed to prescribing a preconceived diet and list of supplements, and inferring all athletes must follow these blindly. I teach each athlete to match his or her specific needs and reap the benefits, whch include increased endurnce and performance, longer athletic lifespan and signficant improvements in overall health, includung the elimination of injuries.

                This book describes this process.

Here's how you can get the most out of this book. First, understand the basic chapters - those that provide a general overview and philosophy of my eating program. These are outlined in chapters 1-4. You will find ths approach very different from most books, diets and nutritional advice. I'm asking that you keep an open mind and take responsibility for your own health and fitness, rather than rely on others to give you the magic pill, which of course does not exist.

Next, understand the basic information on diet and nutrition - general knowledge almost everyone needs to know and follow. This is found in chapters 5-13. These chapters help lay the groundwork that will enable you to more effectively take the necessary steps to individualize your diet and nutrition. Once you get to chapters 14-18, you'll have an easier time individualizing your diet and nutritional state. Chapters 19-24 provide ideas on eating - not just what, but how and when, along with tips how to obtain the highest quality food and get the most out of it. This part also includes a chapter on the next generation of endurance athletes - our children.

Because this is an individualized approach, it is always evolving. It's not a cookbook program you blindly follow without any thought, but rather one that will become your lifestyle. You'll learn to be more intuitive and instinctual regarding eating. As the seasons pass, as your priorities are modified, or as your goals change, you'll be able to easily adjust your diet as necessary to match your unique needs. In the process you may also be able to help family and friends get more fit and healthy. - Dr. Phil Maffetone

                  Book Description

1919. The relationship of natural food to health and life. The author has personal experience of the food industry and deplores the processing involved in the making of "depraved foods." In this revised and enlarged edition, the author has incorporated a schedule of ideal food combinations for children over the age of three years. He holds that the true conditions now so completely hidden from the public view and so rarely referred to in the public press must be exposed in order that the public, guided by the dictates of common sense and an adequate realization of economic facts concerning the food supply of America, may successfully wage war against abuses which threaten the very foundations of national health and prosperity.

Sir John Soane: The Royal Academy Lectures contains the full text of Soane's letters, carefully edited by David Watkin. It is a revised and abridged edition of his award-winning book Sir John Soane: Enlightenment Thought and the Royal Academy Lectures. In his introduction to this new volume, Watkin explains the significance of Soane's approach to architectural history and theory, as expressed in the lectures delivered from 1810-1820 as Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy. They are accompanied by a selection of the watercolors that Soane prepared as illustrations.

                                    Book Description

George Dance (1741-1825) was a pioneering architect who designed the first Neo-Classical building in England (All Hallows, London Wall) as well as the first Indian-style elevation (the City of London's Guildhall), introduced the circus and crescent to London town planning, invented the ammonite capital, designed a prototype art gallery and made early use of structural iron and other technical innovations. As architect to the City of London and a founding member of the Royal Academy, Dance was an establishment figure and yet was considered by his contemporaries as a 'poet architect' who spoke of an 'Architecture unshackled'. The designs at the Soane Museum include drawings made during Dance's six years in Rome, designs for churches, monuments, prisons, a major hospital, town houses and country houses as well as an art gallery, bank, law court, library, museum, and anatomy theatre. His important role as a town planner and structural innovator is well illustrated and so is his skill as decorator and even garden designer. Dance's eloquent buildings, which include the strikingly austere Newgate Prison, as well as his use of daylight, canopy domes, stripped forms and decoration had a powerful influence on his protege John Soane, who acquired his master's drawings in 1836. They remain in Sir John Soane's Museum, an invaluable record of an exceptional architect. The catalogue also includes the drawings of the elder George Dance (1695-1768), architect to the City of London for more than 40 years. His major building, the Mansion House, is unusually well documented and is catalogued here by Sally Jeffery.

Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was one of the most influential, if eccentric, English architects. Most of his designs were so radical for their time that they were never built--just as well, some critics say. But in this ambitiously produced but disappointingly illustrated biography (most of the reproductions are in black-and-white), Gillian Darley champions this son of a bricklayer. Soane was a self-made man who tended to be egotistic and quarrelsome; he displayed sufficient dilettantish genius to discredit him in the eyes of his peers. Despite that, by 1800 he was rich and successful--the personal architect to two prime ministers. He designed the Bank of England, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and Westminster's Law Courts, as well as Britain's beloved red telephone box. His unprecedented use of neoclassical elements and eclectic styles gave Londoners a chance to marvel at theatrical effects and spatial trickery. Soane's greatest achievement, though, remains his home in Lincoln's Inn Fields, which he bequeathed to the nation upon his death. The Soane Museum is as complex and intriguing as the man himself. If not for Darley's diligent research and sensitivity, readers wouldn't know quite how troubled the man was behind this glorious facade. --Lilian Pizzichini, Amazon.co.uk

                                    Book Description

John Soane (1753-1837), one of the most influential and original of all English architects, created dramatic and unpredictable buildings that continue to inspire architects of many schools. This lavishly illustrated biography tells the story of the self-made, irascible architect`s turbulent life and the remarkable buildings he designed, including the Bank of England, the Dulwich Art Gallery, and an array of other private and public commissions.

Sir John Soane (1753-1837) is now regarded as one of the great architects of late 18th- and early 19th- century Europe. And, increasingly, contemporary architects and designers are being influenced by the subtleties of the unique "Soane style." Dorothy Stroud's masterly work is the culmination of a lifetime's research. Drawing together all the threads of her previous writings on Soane, Stroud gives us both a concise biography of the architect and a sweeping, richly illustrated survey of his works.

                                          Book Description

This novel and thoroughly documented study of Sir John Soane (1753–1837) contains the fullest intellectual biography yet published of any English architect. It also sheds new light on eighteenth-century British and continental architectural theory. Dr Watkin enters Soane’s private dialogue with an astonishing array of philosophers, architectural theorists, art-historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists, whose writings he studied while preparing his lectures on architecture at the Royal Academy from 1809. The texts he studied range from classical authors to many of his most famous contemporaries. The book relates Soane’s reading to his own architecture and to his lectures, which are published here in full for the first time, with over one hundred and fifty of his superb lecture illustrations, including twenty-five in colour.
