Presents the reader with a kind of "window in time".......2001-06-08
Edmund Augustus Porcher was the captain of a Royal Navy vessel serving an Esquimalt-based tour of duty on Vancouver Island. Porcher was also a watercolor artist who made an impressive array of sensitive and skillfully executed paintings of what he saw. A Tour Of Duty In The Pacific Northwest: E. A. Porcher and H.M.S. Sparrowhawk, 1865-1868 is an impressive and uniquely informative work drawn from the ship's record and Captain Porcher's commentaries, enhanced with his superb paintings and illustrations presenting the reader with a kind of "window in time" to understand and feel what it was like in those times and places along Canada's Pacific coasts, as well as the complex and multifaceted roles and functions of a British war vessel. A Tour Of Duty In The Pacific Northwest is a unique and highly recommended contribution that will be greatly appreciated by students of maritime, and Canadian nineteenth century history.

Book Description
What constitutes healthy eating, and a healthy weight, has become a hugely complex — and too often vexing — question for those looking to discover, attain, and maintain their ideal weight. The Nutrition Solution takes a fresh approach. Based on the idea that no single diet is universally applicable to everyone, the book first shows readers how to determine their body type. Next, Dr. Kristal, who runs a nutritional clinic, outlines the appropriate diet for each type, including which foods to include and which to avoid. Dr. Kristal worked extensively with William Wolcott, the originator of metabolic typing, and draws on scientific studies to show struggling dieters the way to practical, healthful eating for each metabolic type. Included are detailed strategies for finding freedom from out-of-control food cravings — the downfall of many a dieter.
Customer Reviews:
A difficult review.......2007-08-23
I would like to review my order, but I haven't seen it in my mailbox.
sensible nutritional advice.......2007-06-12
Information we need to get healthier. Explains why the latest greatest diets are not effective for everyone. Also provides eye-opening explanations about the role of cholesterol in our good health, and other things we've been told are good for us but have been shown to be dangerous instead.
A great start on a healthy path.......2007-05-12
If you're looking for a place to begin your quest for health this book and metabolic typing is definately a place to start. This book contains very good information and is written in common terms anyone can understand.
This is the answer to diet and heatlth........2007-03-18
Finally, the answer to why diets work for some and not others (low carb, low fat, etc) and why some vitamins are the same way. It is because there are four basic metabolic groups that eat two very different diets. Very informational with some chemistry. I loved it, and it's working great. I also recommend their clinic in San Rafael.
Nutrition solution.......2006-06-27
This book is an average read, it is merely a reworking of gerorge watson's classic, nutrition and your mind. It would be interesting to someone new to metabolic typing but is a pale comparison to the metabolic typing diet by william Wollcott. This is the ultimate book on nutrition and covers the oxidation system as found in this book. Howvever, it presents the bigger picture and shows where the importance lies of this one system (Dr Kristal's book) amongst the other 8 sytems within the body.

Finnish Cuisine and Culture.......2007-06-24
My first husband was a Finn, bred, born and raised, and often longed for the food of his youth. This book was invaluable; it had all the recipes for dishes that he missed, with instructions that let me turn out perfect pulla (a wonderful bread), kalakukko (rye bread stuffed with fish and bacon) and piirakka (rice or potato pasties) in record time. Some of the cultural information is a bit dated in my edition (I have the old 60s version), but it was still an interesting read. My daughters still make piirakka every Christmas Eve.
My edition has a typo that I hope has been corrected in the newer one. The recipe for lutefisk starts with "Take a large fried codfish..." It should, of course, be a large dried codfish.
Excellent selection of Finnish recipes from someone who knows..........2006-02-13
This book is really a keepsake for the newest Finnish generations. I didn't have a recipe book from my grandparents or aunts, but there are so many things my grandmother made and she was also from Northern Minnesota. The only thing I wish it had more of was pictures, but the author is so knowledgeable, that this book is a must for the 3rd and 4th generation Finns.
Finnish Home Cooking: The Real Thing.......2006-01-14
This book is an introduction to the Finnish kitchen. Ojakangas, a second generation Finnish-America, learned some traditional Finnish dishes from her grandmother. But when her husband was awarded a Fulbright grant in Finland for 1960-61, she was able to get make an intensive study of Finnish food culture. She discovered how some of the dishes she had learned to make as a child had roots deep in Finland, while others were presumably American creations. In this collection of recipes, Ojakangas focuses on the foods found on Finnish tables, although she does include some of the Finnish American traditions that have become standard in Finnish-American culture.
The book makes fascinating reading, for Ojakangas provides not only the common recipes, but she also includes with each recipe a brief description of how the dish fits into the context of the daily diet. Rather than following the standard American cookbook organization of appetizers and soups, main dishes, sides dishes, and desserts, Ojakangas pay close attention to which types of foods are most important for Finns and how they are used together. With this in mind, the book begins with breads, moves on to the coffee table (mainly cookies and cakes), pastries (both sweet and savory), soups, fish, meat dishes (heavy on the liver, pork, and sausage, and very little chicken), vegetables and salads (mostly roots, very little greenery), desserts (fruit soups and porridges), dairy and eggs, beverages, sauces, and sandwiches (open-faced). At the end of the book is a chapter with suggested menus for special occasions and a selected reading list and bibliography.
This is the best and most authentic Finnish cookbook that I've come across in English. I've tried out a few Finnish American cookbooks, and although their recipes may be tasty, they often are distinctly American in flavor, with many more ingredients like green vegetables than one would ever find in Finland. In this book, we find recipes for all the Finnish standards, for everything from kalakukko to maksalaatikko, from mämmi to sima. Ojakangas provides both the Finnish and English names for each dish; although the Finnish is generally quite accurate, there are a few typos. (I stared at "valdemariisi" for quite some time before I realized it should have been written "vadelmariisi", or raspberry rice.)
The culinary descriptions make this book great reading for anyone contemplating visiting or living in Finland for an extended period. I sure wish I had read it before heading off to study in Finland as an exchange student. The first week I arrived in the country, my host-mother showed me around the kitchen and told me to make myself at home. Then she went off to work in Helsinki for the week, and I was left to fend for myself along with her teenage daughters. By the end of the week, I was starving, having consumed all the food that was familiar to me in the first few days. When my host-mother returned from Helsinki and heard that I had reported there was no food in the house, she became very upset, and showed me a large sack of potatoes and other mysterious food stores. At the time, although I was an decent pasta cook and could make some passable stir-fried vegetables, I had never cooked a potato in my life-nor did I know what to do with any of the other foods in the kitchen. I didn't know what Finns ate or when they ate it, so I was completely at a loss when left to feed myself in a Finnish kitchen. A thorough reading of this book before leaving home would have provided a great preparation for what I would find in Finland. I would not have been so surprised by the dark chewy breads, the early meal times, and the importance of lunch and coffee-hour rather than dinner and dessert.
Finnish Cookbook.......2002-09-19
I love this book, and I would never have stumbled upon it except for Amazon's "recommendations" program.
My grandmother was Finnish and used to bake bread on a regular basis. I was only 7 years old the last time I saw her, but as I knead the Finnish rye bread dough, I can see her in her kitchen making bread.
I want to make everything in the book. Everything in it seems "right" to me. I see myself in it.
A great find!.......2001-10-06
My husband had a copy of this cookbook when we married, and once I discovered and began using it... wow, what a treasure! It doesn't have photos or illustrations, but then, if you think about it, our ancestors didn't have the benefit of such, either. I think the book stands strong on its own, without them. There are a lot of great recipes within - even if I have no idea how to pronounce them. :) I've found a few really good ones which are really helpful for lowcarb eating, as well.
I love this book!

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Book.......2002-06-13
Heavily illustrated with excellent diagrams and color photos, this book is not only for anyone learning the art of art-doll making but will also appeal to anyone who enjoys seeing what the creative, human imagination can devise. Just a joy to read from cover to cover and the beautiful photos will provide inspiration for many different types of artist.
Susanna Oroyan gives us the best contemporary information available from the art doll world while also providing the historical bones of costume design.
Susan Oroyan has done it again!.......2002-02-28
Susan Oroyan has done an excellent work. I bought both of her books "Designing the Doll" and "Finishing the Figure" If you own one of the books, you have to own the other one, they go together. The books have a great deal of information and details on doll making. The book is good for beginners or professional doll makers. You will love it.
Great Artistic Inspiration.......2001-11-12
I just picked this book up in a local bookstore and immediately got the itch to pick up some clay. I did not have time to read much, the photographs were what enthralled me. Oroyan picked some fine dolls to illustrate her book and it offers a wealth of imagination to the doll artist. The detail in some of the cosuming is fabulous and the characters of some of the dolls unforgetable!
Another Must Have for the Dollmaker's Library!.......2001-07-10
This is the fourth book I own of Susanna Oroyan's and each one is an absolute must for the libraries of serious dollmakers. This book goes into depth about accessorizing dolls and has great illustrations for making shoes, for fitting costumes to dolls, for creating doll-sized animals, etc. It's fantastic and very easy to follow. The best part of Susanna Oroyan's books are the photographs of dolls by a wide variety of artists. It's like going to a museum. Someday I hope that my dolls are pictured in one of her books. That's a definite goal to work towards! And with her books in my library, I feel I have a great teacher to help get me there!
Sheer Oroyan Magic - and rich with practical information!.......2001-04-02
How we have all waited for this! And what a gift this book is.
In this, her latest masterwork, this gifted and inspiring author and teacher shares with us a true cornucopia of thoughts, techniques and ideas to help any dollmaker to bring the creations in our imagination into reality. This book inspires, encourages and gives answers both to questions we have and to questions we didn't even yet know to ask!
The illustrations and crisp, clear photography, as usual, are superb! For me, an addittional delight of this book is that (as well as showing me new creations by doll artists I already know and love) it introduces me to some absolutely wonderful new artists!
I just LOVE this book and can see it being another one of Susanna Oroyan's works that is a springboard and catalyst for all of us to make 'real' our dreams, moods and flights of imagination!
Thank you to Susanna, the artists who allowed their work to be seen by us and all involved in bringing this book to us!

Customer Reviews:
Helpful manual for picky eaters.......2007-06-12
This book provides actual recipes and tips for getting even finicky eaters to try foods. What I love is that it spells everything out for you in a fun-to-read format. It underscores what vitamins and minerals are essential for your baby's needs and how to get aorund the most picky of eaters, of which my son is one. At least there are many options, so that if one recipe doesn't work, there are dozens more to try. I highly recommend this one.
Great gift idea...........2007-06-10
I recently purchased The Complete Guide to Feeding your Baby and Toddler for a baby shower gift, and I wish it had been available when I was a first time mother. It is simple, well organized, and it is NOT filled with impossible to make baby foods. I especially like the supermarket section. I highly recommend this book to first time moms and for moms who have picky children.
The Best Gift for a New Mom.......2007-05-15
As a non medical professional, this book helps those of us not fluent in the ever changing, sometimes controversial, nutrition spectrum for kids. The author captures the basics, some best practices and some very revealing information on what 'not' to feed your child. It's a great resource for those interested in solid nutrition and a great gift idea for new moms.
Not impressed.......2007-04-11
I'm not impressed with the organization and flow of this book. Perhaps it's just not what I was looking for. It just doesn't seem to flow to me as an "idiot's guide"...and that's exactly what I needed as a first time mom looking for a good, concise source of feeding and nutrition information for introducing solid foods to an infant.
Great Guide for Parents!.......2007-02-08
As a pediatrician, I'm constantly on the lookout for resources for parents. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Feeding Your Baby and Toddler is an excellent resource that packs a ton of important information into an easy-to-read reference.
The first part is geared toward starting infants under a year on solids and provides step-by-step instructions for parents just starting to make their own baby food or feed their infant from a jar. The rest of the book focuses mainly on toddlers who eat table foods. Along with important nutrition details about vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates and fats, I found the cooking tips included in the second half of the book to be most useful. The chapter called "Supermarket Savvy" shares great ideas to make store-bought/convenience foods healthier (such as adding apple juice and chopped raisins and celery to stuffing mix or mixing instant oatmeal into refrigerated cookie dough). The recipe section is better than most cookbooks I've seen for kids because it includes healthy recipes for foods that kids will actually eat (such as apple crisp, meatballs, pudding popsicles, blueberry muffins, chips made from pita bread, and macaroni and cheese).
This Complete Idiot's Guide does a wonderful job of making feeding and nutrition easy for parents--without making you *feel* like a complete idiot. I highly recommend it and refer to it often myself when making meals and snacks for my own family!
Book Description
jim and i is a contemporary tale, a poetic journey describing the early development of the artist Michael Lawrence and the impact of growing up in both the States and Europe. Jim Morrison of the Doors is Michael's companion and alter ego. In a whimsical fashion they seek and take comfort from each other's points of view.
Creating a dream-like quality of shifting moods, Lawrence describes the struggles that he and Morrison had to find their identities before either of them came to the notice of the public at large. They found mutual support in their stand against the indifference of an environment overshadowed by war. The world of art came to their rescue.
The reader travels through a series of theatrical vignettesthe Bohemian foundation of the innocence, vitality and raw energy that is so evident in Lawrence's work today: Toy soldiers in Madrid, abortive meetings with Dali, Punch and Judy at Piazza Navona, performing for John Huston, drawing Judy Garland, etching in Paris, excursions to Afghanistan and Morocco, sexual encounters and flirtations of one sort or another in Barcelona, vividly creates a theatre in which art becomes the hero.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful!.......2005-06-06
Doing a review of Jim and I would make you feel like buying it would be buying a book, and this is the wrong way to read it. Just know that what you will, I hope, read is a lot more than you think can be, let alone "a book". If you are here to render some tribute to the heroic Jim Morrison, read it, for you will feel the scary artist gently reading over your shoulder, you will understand at last why you love Jim Morrison. There is something in Michael Lawrence's scenery that coincides with what one had always wished to hear about Jim, something that we perhaps all thought we were the only one to perceive: Jim appears humanly clever, graceful, self-conscious, at last someone true enought to be truly loved.
If you are here for some other reason, I believe the book welcomes you all the more, and you will find more reasons to carry on reading as it goes. Jim and I feels like a book wiser than its author, or than its story. No strings attached, you don't have to sympathise, to admire, or even to care for Michael Lawrence in order to care for his story and give into the gentleness of the world he creates. read it!
and now, I will wipe the tears that Lawrence's last page put in my eyes and beg my lady lover to read it too.
