Book Description
UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY presents a unique combination of the actual letters of a teenage boy serving in the 97th Division of the United States Army during World War II and his mature recollections and observations fifty years later. The Book has the sweep of a novel, moving from the home front to combat in Germany, and then half way around the world to occupation duty in a shattered Japan.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable, authentic, candid, & informative contribution.......2001-05-23
Unforgettable Journey is a compelling World War II memoir by Stanley Huff and recounts his military training, combat duty in the European theater, and occupation duty in post-war Japan. A, 18 year old American soldier, Huff wrote home in a series of letters that began in March 1944 as he was en route to basic training at Fort Eustis, Virginia and continued throughout his military career. What is especially remarkable is that Unforgettable Journey, an autobiography based on that long ago correspondence, reads today as smoothly and as engagingly as any novel. Here is a remarkable, authentic, candid, and informative contribution that will prove a very welcome addition to the growing library of World War II literature.
Good Reading.......2001-03-31
In Unforgettable Journey Mr. Huff reminds us once again that older men create wars, young men fight them. This story tells of an 18 year old boy who in his zeal of patriotism leaves Mom's apple pies and dreams of college to go fight in both the European and Japanese theatres in "the war to end all wars." Through his Mother's letters we follow the day to day life of the young soldier experiencing homesickness, travels to far places, and ultimately combat. This was truly an "Unforgettable Journey" made by thousands of young men. Mr. Huff was fortunate to return and share it with us.
Great Book!.......2001-03-16
I thought that the book was very good. I don't usually read stories about wars, but this really appealed to me. It was a collection of letters written by a young man fighting in World War 2 back home to his family. I thought that as a young man, he made very astute observations about the changes in the world around him and the consequences of the war on the people all around him. I couldn't put it down!

"I can't loose weight because I have a terrible metabolism"
You may not realize it, but you can take control of your metabolism.
Identical twins and registered dietitians, Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames embarked on a twin study to determine precisely what does -- and doesn't -- increase the rate at which our bodies burn calories and fat.
Their findings? Small changes have big results.
The nine weight-loss principles -- and the 200 tips that help you incorporate them into your lifestyle -- in Fire Up Your Metabolism are surprisingly simple: Eat breakfast before you get to work. Learn which sugary snacks trump others (peanut M&Ms boost metabolism, but Twizzlers don't). Drink water, which is essential to burning calories. Always eat dinner, even if it's late. Focus on muscle building, not cardiovascular workouts.
With Fire Up Your Metabolism, you won't have to avoid restaurants or follow a diet (though one is included if you like regimentation). The fatigue and distracting hunger that derail most dieters won't affect you because revving your metabolism is all about eating. You will enjoy breads and other carbohydrates. You will boost your metabolism with power proteins, including hamburgers, and avoid other proteins that bog you down. You will indulge in snacks you thought a dieter could never touch.
Lyssie and Tammy's clients have experienced not only dramatic weight loss but also the thrill of having more energy than ever before. Now you, too, can rewire your metabolism to lose weight fast and forever.

Trainers in a Book.......2006-11-14
In the introduction there is a quiz which reveals if your metabolism is slowing. Your score is an indicator on how many percentage points you should follow in the book. But there is so much information just what constitutes a percentage?
Throughout the book there are tips on certain food groups and/or individual brands of food. It also includes Myth busters which reviews certain myths about food with updated info. Chapter 5 Favoring Fabulous Fats provides plenty of information that will help manage fat intake and power up metabolism. Additionally, I like the self dietary experiments that the two presented ie What happens to your body when you skip breakfast? Lack of sleep? Not enough water?
Interesting book, very different approach but similar recommendations compared to other books.......2006-07-07
If you are struggling to lose weight this book takes a very interesting approach. The authors are twins and they use themselves as human guinea pigs to show the reader what difference their recommendations will make on the human body. From a scientific perspective I found this approach to be fascinating.
The book is subdivided as follows:
1. Get Ready, Get Set, Get Fired Up
2. Mixing Nutrients to Maximize Metabolism
3. Choosing Carbohydrates Carefully
4. Power Proteins versus Problem Proteins
5. Favoring Fabulous Fats
6. Banishing Breakfast, Beware
7. Missing Meals: Misdemeanor or Manslaughter
8. Where there is a Will there is Water
9. Sleep Satiated versus Sleep Starved
10. Fidgeting, Frolicking and Keeping Fit
11. Muscles Make Magic
12. Sample Daily Menus
The authors provide sound nutritional and exercise advice for those that are motivated to get themselves into better shape. I do not find the authors advice to be overly difficult to follow, but I might be in the minority. I recently switched to a mostly vegan lifestyle for health reasons. It is amazing what all of us can do or accomplish when we are properly motivated.
I have summarized my observations regarding the books content below.
Pros:
1. Sound recommendations that all of us have read before backed up by personal experience
2. Easy to read and understand
3. Detail adequate for the general audience
4. Provides exercises for both the home and the gym
5. Specific recommendations in terms of food consumption
6. Target Heart rate given for optimum exercise efficiency
Cons:
1. I would have liked to see pictures or drawing for the exercises so that people knew that they were performing the exercises correctly.
2. I would also have liked to see a summary of their recommendations
3. Cutesy chapter titles are annoying
Overall, I feel the authors did a credible job covering the topic of health from a nutrition and exercise standpoint. If you are ready to make some changes to your life, and are looking for a kick to get you started this might just be the book for you.
Best Book Out There.......2005-10-24
Listen, we all know the basics...eat less, exercise more...BUT this book tells you how to do this simply and compactly. The book is worth the money for the tips alone but it also offers great lists showing what a real portion is (something we all need to be reminded of), what foods you should have all the time, some occasionally and some rarely. They don't cut any food out of your diet, just explain to you how often you should eat it. Wonderful book for those of you who aren't looking for that miracle, wonder diet and just looking for something that makes sense. My husband and I now tell people we are on a new "food program" not a diet. We are losing without being hungry or frustrated and losing at a responsible rate.
the very Best information by qualified nutritionists!!!.......2005-09-04
I can honestly say that this book has finally given me an END to the search for the correct diet and exercise and metabolism information.
They are RIGHT ON with every "discovery"
and recommendation that they make. My health is much better for their expertise...and I will be writing to the authors to thank them for a great resource.
it sucks.......2004-10-22
A really disliked this book. I only lost 5 pounds in a month! Yes, I was following the procedure. Just keep this in mind when looking for this book.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book!.......2006-01-04
This is a great book. I read it with my 2 pre-schoolers, and they love it. I disagree that it is not a bed time story. We read it anytime during the day. We have been making the bread at home as a project. The recipes are delicious (esp the coconut bread). I would highly recommend this book as an educational and fun book for children.
Baking needed.......1999-12-29
This is a nice way to taech cultural diversity , but it just isn't the same unless you bake the recipes to go with the story. It would be great for a school class lesson where different parents bring in samples of the breads. Not a good bedtime story.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Overview for the Novice.......2000-03-30
I found the previous review interesting and educational; the reviewer sounds experienced and practiced in the field of canine nutrition. I, however, was not and found Pat's overview informative. She is suggestive about topics controversial in natural dog care, but responsibly cites that it is controversial. Note that many well-written vets such as Schoen and Pitcairn recommend her book in theirs. Because little has been done in the way of vetrinary nutritional research (I am a former medical researcher), much of any of this information is largely assumptive. I thank the previous reviewer for his/her insight and congratulate Pat Lazarus in her attempt to give (as a good journalist and researcher would) a comprehensive picture with varying opinions and, as an author is licensed to do, give her opinion and deliver her experience to benefit others.
Good Intro to Natural Dog Care but Skip Chapter on Nutrition.......1999-09-13
This is a new, completely revised edition of Lazarus' "Keep Your Pet Healthy the Natural Way" except that she has chosen to write a separate book on natural cat care this time around. As with her first book which was published 15+ years ago, Lazarus did the research for this book by sending questionnaires to a number of holistic vets. As a result, we get the views and treatment approaches of a number of different vets (including Dr. Martin Goldstein, Dr. John Fudens, Dr. Carvel Tiekert, etc.). Unfortunately not all of the advice has been updated (some of it appeared in her first book), and she does not point out which recommendations were given by the vets 15 years ago and which ones are current.
The first part of the book deals with preventing disease. It starts with a chapter on the problems with commercial foods which should be interesting to those not already familiar with Ann Martin's, Dr. Goldstein's, or Dr. Pitcairn's books. Then Lazarus goes into feeding a natural diet, and this is definitely the worst part of the book, since the diet she recommends is dangerously unbalanced. It does not contain nearly enough calcium to balance out the high phosphorous levels in the meats and grains she recommends feeding. Also, a diet consisting of just 33% - 50% raw meat is not really optimal for a healthy canine. Dogs, after all, are carnivores, and our long experience with natural rearing and feeding indicates that they tend to do best on a diet that consists of 75% raw meat and bones. Unfortunately Lazarus does not really approve of feeding bones. She says that of the 10 holistic vets she questioned on this subject, 7 said not to give any bones, 2 said that only a specific type of bone was okay (e.g., ox tails), and only one vet was completely in favor of feeding bones. Feeding bones remains a controversial subject and many vets are only now coming around to the idea that bones are an important part of the canine diet (see Dr. Goldstein's recent book). Not only do they supply the calcium that is necessary to balance out the high phosphorous content of the meat, but they also supply numerous other valuable minerals and trace minerals. Most importantly perhaps, feeding soft, raw bones (stay away from those big beef femur bones as they can wear down and even break teeth and never feed cooked bones which are dangerous since they are dry and brittle and splinter easily in addition to being difficult to digest) will prevent your dogs from developing tooth or gum problems which present an enormous health hazard. Your dogs will never have to be put under to have their teeth cleaned. Our dogs have been eating raw bones (along with other foods) for almost thirty years and their health could not be any better. It's really best to skip the chapter on nutrition and go straight to the chapter on vaccinations. Lazarus covers the potential dangers of vaccinating, nosodes, making vaccination decisions, and minimizing the harmful effects of vaccines. IMO, she is a little too enthusiastic about using homeopathic nosodes instead of vaccines. Not only does it violate the principles of classical homeopathy to use nosodes as routine preventatives the same way one would use a vaccine, but it's my experience that nosodes simply aren't very effective when used in this manner in hopes of preventing the most dangerous viral diseases (i.e., parvo and distemper). This is not to say that vaccinations are always effective or that one should definitely vaccinate, but I've often seen nosodes give people a false sense of security which is not a good thing.
The second part of Lazarus' book deals with natural therapies for skeletal disease, eye problems, skin and coat problems, infectious diseases, cancer, diabetes, cystitis, parasites, kidney disorders, heart problems, etc. This is definitely the best part of the book, since it's interesting to read how holistic vets across the country treat these problems. The book also contains a nationwide directory of holistic vets which will be helpful to those looking for a holistic vet in their area.
All in all, this would have made a pretty good introduction to holistic health care for dogs if it wasn't for the terrible chapter on nutrition. That makes it suitable as an introductory book only if it's purchased along with a good book on feeding a natural diet (check out books by Juliette de Bairacli Levy, Wendy Volhard, Dr. Pitcairn, and Dr. Billinghurst on this topic).

Waste of time & money.......2006-06-21
This author babbles on about horrific case histories & never does get to the point. This book grossly lacks anything the reader can use to keep their pets healthy in any shape or form. I was very annoyed. Thanks, Lynn
Well-written information on feline health and nutrition........1999-07-28
This is the only health and/or nutrition book I've read cover to cover. The topics are fascinating, and the writing style engaging.
Lazarus provides general information about feline nutrition (or lack thereof) and diet suggestions, as well as sections dedicated to a variety of feline medical problems and both their standard and holistic treatments. She cites numerous holistic veterinarians, but this is not a tirade against conventional medicine. It does offer hope through alternative solutions.

Very necessary if you own a cat or dog.......2003-11-30
Information in this book saved my pet's life after my vet gave up. I have worn my copy out and I am buying another one. I have been referring to this book for years. Far better than any of the other 15 books I have about pet health. My thanks to the author for writing this book.

Time consuming.......2006-11-03
This book is for crafters who want to make the actual soap base. I prefer to purchase the soap base & craft soaps with different colors & scents & shapes.
not as hard as you think..........2005-02-08
I always wanted to know how to make my own soap. At first I thought this is gona be the hardest thing. when in reality it's the easiest. This book takes you through a step by step process. and in the end you will end up having the most beautiful looking soap. so nice you'll be tempted to sell it.
Please Use Extreme Caution.......2002-05-08
I bought this book for myself. I read it over several times and became very familiar with the process before attempting anything. The book is extremely informative and well-written. Very easy to understand. The description of ingredients and the purpose of each one was very useful. Beautiful pictures. Nice sections on coloring, fragrancing & moulding. Great info. on where ingredients can be purchased. However, even though I followed the directions for the alcohol/lye method to the letter, I still had a disastrous first experience. My mixture, simmering on lowest possible heat, boiled up and oozed out the sides, despite the tightly cinched bungee holding the sheets of plastic in place. My inner pot ended up floating on boiling soap foam. I managed to save the remainder that was left in the pot and finished the simmering proccess directly on the burner (after cleaning the outside of the pot thoroughly). I estimated the amount of sugar/water solution and glycerin to add to it. Although I can't vouch for the amounts of any of the ingredients at this point, the stuff that I did save managed to come out very well. Looks pretty, smells great and lathers beautifully. I'm just lucky my stove top didn't burst into flames considering the flamable alcohol that oozed over the sides of the pot. I believe next time I try this (soon) I will ajust the method to what I consider safe and hope that it works well. If you plan on making this soap, please be sure to have an extinguisher close by. I'm not sure why I had such a horrible time with this method, but I'd hate for it to be worse for anyone else.
great gift idea.......2002-01-14
I recieved this book for a Christmas present from my brother-in-law. He knows I enjoy 'crafting' as he calls it. I personally wouldn't have thought of making soaps as my next crafting project, but now that I've read this book I'm slowing compiling all the items I need(I'm on a tight budget currently), I can't wait until I can start making my very own soaps. I've thanked my brother-in-law several times for his wonderful present, even though my husband is cringing at the thought of havnig piles of soap curing in our small apt. Everything is explained so well, I'm sure if my husband wanted to he could even make soaps too. This year everyone I know will be getting soap that I made, thanks to this book.
I love this book!.......2002-01-13
I have made wonderful soap using the recipes from this book. I used the alcohol/lye method, rather than the gel method. It was easier than I expected. The soap lathers well, is gentle and smells great.

Book Description
A memoir of the famous photographer by a former friend.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-10-30
I found this book extremely disappointing and agree with other reviewers that the author seemed more interested in aggrandizing himself through association with Mapplethorpe. Fritscher also seems intent on producing this biography to prove that Mapplethorpe selected him, rather than Patricia Morrisroe, as biographer. The writing is annoying, frequently repetitive, and skips all over the place chronologically. The book comes across more as a collection of magazine/newspapers articles rather than a coherent whole.
A Lasting Snapshot of Photographic Genius.......2005-01-05
Few artists have been mythologized as quickly and as completely as the late Robert Mapplethorpe. The incredible life of the controversial photographer is given new focus in the biography Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera by friend, confidant, and former lover Jack Fritscher. Insider knowledge of the man humanizes a complex individual who has become obscured by his art and by the scourge of censorship.
This revealing portrait by Hastings House publishers shows Mapplethorpe from his early days as a fledgling photographer. As the former editor of Drummer magazine, it was Fritscher who gave Mapplethorpe his first magazine cover. The biography traces his rise to prominence as the avant-garde photographer of the New York art scene, his sexual obsessions, his ongoing relationship with punk legend Patti Smith, his drug use, his submersion into leather culture, his love of beauty, his theories on art, and much more. Into the narrative Fritscher weaves a fair amount of artistic exploration and examination as well.
Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera also contains a generous number of photos and a gold mine of data about not only Robert Mapplethorpe, but about the larger scope of the gay leathersex New York scene of the late 70s and early 80s. Fritscher explores somewhat extensively the great creators of the erotic image from that period such as Rex, as well as those on the photographic cutting edge such as Joel-Peter Witkin. By exploring Mapplethorpe's influences as well as his life, Fritscher provides the reader with a wider understanding not only of the artist, but also of his world and times.
Many authors wrote this book by Fritscher.......2004-04-27
By chasing down lots of interviews, author Fritscher manages to have several friends of Mapplethorpe compose their thoughts of robert and his photographs. The beauty of this book is the multiple voices speaking which Fritscher takes the time to present to honor Mapplethorpe. He could have had the last word himself--after all, he had the book contract and was the man's sometime lover. This Mapplethorpe memoir is actually written by the following artists and personalities who Fritscher presents--AND LETS SPEAK IN THEIR OWN VOICES WHICH HE COLLECTED: GEORGE DUREAU, HOLLY SOLOMON, CAMILLE O'GRADY, REX, MARK WALKER, THE INCREDIBLE MILES EVERETT, EDWARD LUCIE-SMITH, JOEL-PETER WITKIN. (Yes, this book is scary, and it gets scarier as time goes by and our culture becomes more puritanical. It's also a good reference book of those times and events that are now so far back in the past.
Mildly interesting, mostly annoying and self-aggrandizing........2004-01-11
It's been about two years since I read this book, but its lingering effect is extreme irritation with the writer. Fritscher is clearly far more interested in himself than in Mapplethorpe, and boastfully uses the subject of his "biography" (term used charitably) as little more than a tool with which to broadcast his own (clearly exaggerated) influence on -- and involvement with -- the photographer. While I don't doubt that Fritscher played a small role in Mapplethorpe's life and art, I don't for a second believe that it was even a tiny fraction of what he'd like you to believe. Jack, you were one of a large pool of pornographers and one of an even more humongous population of RM's lovers. This bio reeks of little more than self-promotion and self-promoting fiction, and the fact that it was penned posthumously makes it even more disgusting and annoying.
Very interesting "read" that penetrates 70s art &sex world.......2003-09-03
Written as a tell-all memoir of pop culture, this book is amazing in what it tells us about lost lives in lost times. Real nostalgia. Actually, this book is loaded with "gay street credential." The fact that it has an index tells you the book seriously intends to record history's major and minor characters. Many gay pop culture books don't even bother to have an index which makes them useless. My litmus test in a book store is to first see if a book has an index, and then I skim it to see who's included and who's not, because that way I can judge the book's presentation and prejudices. Too bad Patty Smith doesn't write about Mapplethorpe and this period like his boyfriend did in writing this attack on American lying, political hypocrisy, and phoney art wackjobs. What is generously amazing is that boyfriend Fritscher seems to genuinely miss and mourne Mapplethorpe to the degree that he devotes 60% of the book to direct interviews with other Mapplethorpe art friends like George Dureau, Joel-Peter Witkin, and others who all speak for themselves.
