Customer Reviews:
If you are interested in buying individual stocks, this is a good place to spend some of your research time and money.......2007-03-02
There is an old saying that people spend more time studying which refrigerator to buy than how they invest for their retirement. It is a sad saying because it is probably true in more cases than we would like to admit. There is also an awful lot of evidence that people are more often better off with a very low cost index fund than in picking stocks or even investing in mutual funds. Why? Because over the long haul, there aren't many who can consistently provide higher than market returns. And it is even more difficult to identify who those folks will be in advance.
Still, it is nice to look for the next Microsoft, or to figure out when it would be a good time to get into a good company. What too many people do is buy after the run has started and they end up providing capital gains possibilities for others. You may have heard of the greater fool theory. If not, feel free to email me and I can explain it to you.
While the web is full of information about companies, one has to do an awful lot of analysis and develop one's own perspectives about when to buy, when to hold, and when to sell. Again, during the learning curve one makes it possible for others to make money by taking your hard earned money away from you in transaction costs and in helping you buy high and sell low.
This terrific book has several virtues for the person wanting to buy some stock in companies that are likely to be good. However, the authors don't simply list 500 stocks and say, "Have at it." Far from it. They provide a very interesting page on each one of the companies and that page is crammed full of valuable information.
The obvious eye catcher are the star ratings. However, they do not say whether or not this is a sound company. Morningstar uses its star ratings to communicate the relative attractiveness of the company as an investment at its (then) current price given all the other aspects of its condition and position. I also appreciate the fair value price (the discounted cash flow value divided by the number of outstanding shares as Morningstar has evaluated their likely future cash flows). The last close, consider buy, consider sell, and yield are also interesting indicators for a person trying to understand that company.
Morningstar also provides a brief summary of the business, a rating of the stewardship of present management and why they gave that rating. There is also a good amount of historical financial information, ratios, competitors, comparisons of financial performance to those competitors, and about a third of a page "thesis" on the condition and prospects of that company as the named Morningstar analyst sees it on the date given for that article.
There are also about fifty pages of interesting short articles at the front of the book that explain these reports to the reader, the thinking behind some of their concepts like the competitive moat size. These pages also provide all the companies simply by name. Some are also singled out for being attractive and other for not being least attractive. The companies are also presented by sector and also the performance of various market sectors are also given. The back of the book has a helpful glossary.
Now, we all know that financial information becomes dated very quickly. So, Morningstar provides access to their online services that have more up to date information. When you buy this book you get access to fifty reports you can download at no additional cost before the end of December 2007. This is a very nice way to overcome the aging factor of the information in a book.
Still, this book is a wonderful study for anyone wanting to learn more about any of these 500 companies, business students, and prep work for folks getting ready to invest. It is quite interesting to compare what Morningstar thought months ago and what current markets have shown about those judgments.
A very useful and helpful book. Morningstar also offers other books in this series for bonds and mutual funds.
A great resource to supplement your research.......2006-12-21
It's best to do your own research first, but of course a second opinion can never hurt. That's how I used this book for most part, but also got some ideas. I used this book for an experiment; I made up a mock porfolio of stocks I had done research on, and then took 16 totally random companies that this pick had rated with 5 stars, which is the highest rating. 12 of the 16 companies made money, while 4 didn't. Over 9 months, I gained about 10.5%, which doesn't factor in dividends, or fees for that matter. On the other hand, the stocks that I had actually researched, did about the same, 10%.
Overall, the book gets a 4.5. They strike a good balance between information, and quantity of top stocks. A beginner may not enjoy this book off the bat, because there are no explanations of the numbers, but after you learn a few things, the rest falls into place. They have the basic numbers for all the companies listed, but certainly, by the time the book comes out, those numbers will have changed, and at years' end, they will most likely be quite different. The vital info is across the top, and makes for quick reference.
Do your own research, use this book for a second opinion. Morningstar is without a doubt one of the most trusted names in the business.
Excellent tool for the patient investor.......2006-03-09
This is without doubt an excellent starting point for investors (traders beware, this is of not much use to you!). By using traditional value analysis and their own business model analysis, Morningstar provides a "fair/intrisinc value" along with what it considers are "Buy below" and "Sell above" prices. In addition, the analysts assign a "moat" for the company reflecting its competitive advantage. Based on the current price and the fair value, the analysts provide star ratings for each stock. The book provides all this information and more for 500 stocks. The early parts of the book provide information on their methodology. The book also organizes their stocks into the sectors and according to different parameters such as price/earnings ratio, etc. While 500 stocks may be considered to be too big a sample for a "short list" for investments, it is still extremely valuable. For the price, no other source can provide such detailed, independent research. A must buy for any investor.
Let Experts pick the winners for you !.......2006-02-04
Morningstar grades the stocks in its universe with one to five stars. This book has one page overviews of the best 500 stocks in that universe, rated and discussed in some detail.
Morningstar uses a "value investor" approach to stock evaluation.
I use this book in conjunction with Morningstar's StockInvestor newsletter, and I am pleased with the results.

Quilts in Bloom: A Garden of Inspiring Quilts & Techniques with Floral Designs.......2007-09-26
Beautiful ideas for borders. Gorgeous floral patterns and quilting. A wonderful book for applique' lovers. Highly recommend.
This book covers it all!.......2006-06-13
I have well over 400 books in my quilting library, and this is easily one of the most beautiful. When my soul is in need of a pick-me-up, slowly leafing through this book and absorbing the colors, designs, and spirit of the book never fails to bring peace. This is one of the most lavishly illustrated books I've ever seen, packed with hundreds of photos of the most beautiful floral quilts ever created, with lots of close-ups of fine details. The lovely quilt featured on the cover is only the beginning (and wait until you see the picture of the entire quilt - you'll be astounded!). The book is divided into sections: Appliqued Quilts, Pieced Quilts, Quilting Designs, Floral Borders, and Embellished Quilts. Each section has a multitude of photos presenting quilts appropriate for that category, as well as basic instructions for some of the techniques presented in that section. The key word here is "basic". There is enough instruction, illustrated with clear photos, to allow you to complete the basic techniques. For example, the Appliqued Quilts section has instructions for Folk-Art Hand Applique, Fused Applique, and Freezer-Paper Hand Applique. The beginning quilter will find these instructions more than adequate to allow them to sample the techniques, then perhaps follow-up on favorites with more in-depth books. More advanced quilters will appreciate the wealth of inspiration this book provides with all its gorgeous photos, and perhaps pick up a technique pointer or two. In summary, this book is well worth the price of admission for its beauty alone. Job well done, Ms. Haslam!
Lovely pictures, disappointing content.......2006-03-09
The pictorial examples of of Quilts in Bloom are beautiful. However, very little of the book is devoted to techniques and they are pretty basic. From the cover I would have expected more intricate patterns included that play off the images of the quilts in the book. There are many, many more books on this subject that have more to offer. Glance through it and leave it at the store (or website).
quilts in bloom.......2005-09-11
I find that Quilts in Bloom is a great book ,it has a lot of information in it
Also it tells you how all the tecneique's and has plenty of photos and diagrams of how to do it
I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Applique
Book Description
Growing beautiful penstemons in your garden will become an addiction when you have this book that describes all 279 species and shows 32 different varieties in color on the covers. From one-inch mats to six-foot spires, there are species, cultivars and hybrids of penstemons for every type of garden. This book is written by members of the American Penstemon Society for beginning gardeners and gives detailed directions for growing penstemons from nurseries or starting them from seeds. A list of sources is provided. For more experienced gardeners, it brings together information about penstemons that is otherwise available only from multiple sources.
Customer Reviews:
Decent treatment of Penstemon species.......2004-06-09
This book gives valuable advice on growing each of the more than 250 species of penstemon. What I find especially valuable is the detailed information on starting each species from seed...germination temperature, length of cold stratification (if needed), etc. Also has information on creating your own hybrids.
My only "complaint" is that there are no photos inside the book...the only photos offered are on the covers. You CAN purchase the group of photos for this book separately (tacky) as either a CD ($25) or photos on paper ($12). I think they should have charged more for this book and packaged the photos in with it, rather than offering the book and photos separately. Since I wanted to use this book to help identify penstemons, I will probably go ahead and order the photos, but I'm still irritated that they didn't come with the book.

A nice short guidebook for penstemon fans.......2006-07-27
This short guide is a revision of the author's earlier "The Beautiful Beardtongues of New Mexico" (written with Erma Pilz). The high point is 74 clear, well-reproduced color photographs of NM penstemons, photographed by Bill Heflin, the author's husband. She has written one-page descriptions of about 45 species to aid field identification, along with a short note on growing native penstemons in your garden. In my experience, the Rocky Mountain penstemon is the easiest to find and grow.
She also includes this note: "The penstemons appear to be a rapidly-evolving genus and are extremely variable, even within one species, sometimes making identification difficult." Amen!
Happy reading--

Customer Reviews:
Good if you live in Europe or warm climates in N. America.......2004-06-09
This book was really meant for European growers, or those who are fortunate enough to live in a climate warm enough to grow the wonderful "bedding" penstemons featured in this book. I wish those of us in cold-winter climates had the variety of Penstemon hybrids to choose from that are featured here!
The descriptions of the warm-climate hybrids are first-rate. However, the species are lumped together and talked about according to group rather than each being treated individually.
Overall, the book is easy to read, has nice photos (mostly of the warm-climate hybrids), and can give the beginner a good introduction to the world of penstemons.
I gave the book only three stars because its usefulness for me is pretty limited (I live in a cold climate) and because of its sparse treatment of the species penstemons.
Book Description
What are Penstemons, anyway? Answer: Members of the beautiful and hearty snapdragon family, they make up the largest genus of flowering plants native to North America, with about 272 species. With high-quality, full color photos, this authoritative field guides makes it easy to identify the 80 species of Penstemons found in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Includes technical line drawings for each species and a range map showing where each is found.

Book Description
With some 270 species, Penstemon is the largest genus endemic to North America, with examples to be found in every state in the continental U.S. Penstemons are particularly beloved by rock gardeners, but as Panayoti Kelaidis points out in his foreword, they belong in every garden, since "one penstemon or another will thrive in virtually any microclimate a garden can contrive, from hot, desert exposures to dank shade."
Customer Reviews:
Not very useful for general horticultural purposes.......2004-12-29
This book is of great merit for some potential readers, but is not useful for the majority of gardeners, for a number of reasons:
1) The bulk of the book is textual and technical species descriptions, useful only for botanists and those aiming to collect from the wild.
2) The photos are a very limited selection compared to the above and they are inconveniently placed in two "plates" sections in the middle of the book (an understandable decision as it keeps production costs down).
3) The species descriptions and especially the photos are very heavily focused on the Western semi-desert, mountainous and scree-living species. That may reflect the reality of the Penstemon's origins, but I think many, if not most potential purchasers of a book on Penstemons would be interested in more coverage of plants useful in a conventional garden scheme. But such plants and their cultural requirements take up maybe 5% of this book.
In short, if you are a Western-highland gardener looking for species xeriscape plants, this book will prove useful. If you are a botanist, or if you aim to collect, breed and hybridize Penstemons, then this book is of even greater value. But if you want to add Penstemons to a more conventional garden scheme, then it is close to useless.
Very heavy on the botany..........2004-05-25
VERY heavy on the botany and botanical terms; not enough practical advice on growing each of the mentioned species in a garden setting. This is really something of a botanist's guide to penstemons, NOT necessarily a gardening guide, and definitely NOT for beginners. Unfortunately, the book also can't really be used as a field guide either since it doesn't contain enough photos or illustrations to help with identification of penstemons (at least for non-botanists).
While the photos and paintings that are included are beautiful, I really wanted to see photos of all or most of the species mentioned because I expected to use this as an aide in identifying penstemons. More photos, especially of common species that I would have expected to be included, would have greatly enhanced this book. And making the book less botanist-oriented would probably have helped with its popularity and usefulness to the general gardening public.
This book DOES describe each of the different species (in mostly technical botanical terms) and sometimes gives an overall idea of where they grow in nature (and occasionally, how to grow them in the garden). But the descriptions are not meant for the average person and are not very helpful when trying to identify specific plants.
There still is no one good book for the average person that describes each species, gives growing tips, and offers enough photos/illustrations for identifying penstemons...
An indispensable guide and reference for gardeners........2000-03-05
Packed with color photos and botanical illustrations is this intriguing guide to penstemons, outlining a wide range of species both common and rare. Enjoy a range of choices which can be used in both dry and marshy gardens across the country, concluded by a mail order source guide.

Book Description
There is perhaps no greater fear in a parentâs heart than the thought that a muchâloved and wellâcaredâfor child will make bad choices or even become a prodigal.
What are parents to do in such circumstances? Authors Jim Newheiser and Elyse Fitzpatrick speak from years of personal experience as both parents and biblical counselors about how hurting parents can deal with the emotional trauma of when a child goes astray. They offer concrete hope and encouragement along with positive steps parents can take even in the most negative situations.
Includes excellent advice from Dr. Laura Hendrickson regarding medicines commonly prescribed to problem children, and offers questions parents can ask pediatricians before using behavioral medications. A heartfelt and practical guide for parents.
Customer Reviews:
Godly counsel and scriptural hope for struggling parents........2006-09-29
I want to echo the comments of the first reviewer below, Brad Bigney. This is a wonderful resource to help parents who are daily doing battle with their rebellious teens. It helps them to find the hope they left behind months or sometimes years ago. The authors remind us, on the authority of Scripture, that God is absolutely in control of our teenagers even if we are not. He is also working out His purposes in their lives -- and ours -- not just in spite of their rebellion, but through it. God is so great that even when sinful humans rebel again Him it redounds to His glory.
Thanks to some godly counsellors in my own life, and to books like this, I am reminded to keep the proper perspective on the spiritual battle that rages in our home. I am also challenged to keep a close check on my own responses to the situation, not meeting my daughter's sin with sin of my own. I am exhorted to grow and change toward Christ-likeness even if my daughter's heart never changes and her rebellion never relents. Probably the single most profound statement I read in this book, and one that I desperately needed was: "God doesn't call us to be successful parents. He calls us to be faithful parents." I'm just responsible to be obedient in my parenting. God is responsible for the results.
Brad Bigney noted in his review that he mailed out 25 copies of this book to hurting families in his church. Mine was one of them. Brad is my pastor. I'm very grateful for his genuine concern and encouragement, and for his insightful choice of this powerful little volume. If you're caught in the grips of teen rebellion, I can't think of a better book to remind you of your biblical anchor.
God obviously superintended over the writing of this volume.......2006-04-16
My wife and I read this book aloud together and have received comfort and conviction in equal measures. We are especially thankful for how the authors Jim Newheiser and Elyse Fitzpatrick found the delicate balance between trusting God for our children's souls without neglecting essential parental responsibility.
There are two chapters in this book written by Dr. Laura Hendrickson that address the particular challenges associated with raising "special needs" children. Dr. Hendrickson has exceptional insights since she is a medical psychiatrist, a biblical counselor, and a mother of an autistic teenager. She masterfully addresses the delicate subject of discerning the difference between a child's weakness and responsibility for his or her sinful behavior. She offers invaluable practical and compassionate help for parents and families wrestling with "special difficulties."
It is our desire that every parent in our local church read this landmark work before their children enter adolescence because the counsel contained in this book not only offers comfort to those who are hurting in the wake of problems with wayward children, it also offers clear and concise counsel on how to spot and deal with problems before they reach the level of crisis. Thank you for a long overdue resource.
God obviously superintended over the writing of this volume; it is our prayer that He will be pleased to put the book in many hands of many as He faithfully transforms His people into the image of His Son.
This is What You've Been Looking For!.......2006-01-16
I've read dozens of parenting books, and have preached dozens of sermons about parenting, but when I saw the title of this new book I grabbed it! I immediately flipped to the table of contents and began to skim through the chapter titles and my heart began to soar! I felt like someone was addressing the very things that no one in the Christian community has wanted to address.
As a pastor and father of five I am regularly faced with the heartache of seeing kids who were taught and trained to do right, go off and choose to do wrong. And the Christian community has been largely silent... or worse yet critical and unencouraging to parents who are dealing with a child like this. Too often the parents are made to feel like 'If you had really done it right, and followed God's instructions on how to raise children you wouldn't be facing this now.' Many times the only answer given is "You failed." It might not be spoken, but it's felt and conveyed by the silence... and the glances... and sadly even the gossip between other families observing what's taking place.
Finally here is grace and truth (just like Jesus embodied in John 1:17)in an effort to answer the question, "What about the parent or parents who've tried to do all that God's Word tells them to do, and yet the child makes a choice to reject godly wisdom... to reject biblical truth... and to follow hard after the world?" What is that parent supposed to do? What should they think? How should they feel? Have they failed? Do they get an "F" on their parenting report card?
This book answers the cry of those parents... and it's long overdue. Every pastor should read this book to know better how to encourage the parents in his church that are facing a child like this - and they're out there! Usually they try to just stay low - and fly under the radar, because they're not sure how the church is going to repond when they find out they have a child that has rejected Christianity and is living in a 'far land.'
I read 100 pages of this book the first day I picked it up, and immediately I ordered 25 copies. I then wrote a personal letter of encouragement, sharing about some of our own struggles and sent it as a gift to every family in my church that I knew was struggling with a child like this.
You would not believe the response! People thanked me profusely and have devoured the book. The response has been overwhelming. With tears in their eyes parents have thanked me for passing this on to them. The authors of this book have touched on a topic where parents have desperately been needing encouragement ... and they write with humility and tears as one struggler to another. Yet, they don't just moan about it; they offer real hope and practical steps to start living and thinking differently.
This is going to be a valuable tool in encouraging hurting parents. I thank God that the authors were humble enough and courageous enough to come out and say what so many of us are feeling... and thinking... and experiencing. And to say it while there's still no 'happy ending' to their own stories. Too often the Christian community refuses to tell their story unless it has a 'happy ending' all tied up with a bow. This one doesn't do that, and so it offers great hope to parents who are in the very midst of the trial. So many times in the book they would say, "You're not alone!" or "You're not the only one" and it was exactly what one needs to hear. Satan tries to isolate us and make us think we're the only ones having something like this happen to us.
Get this book! Read this book. And give it away to others.

life of this leading modernist painter mostly in relation to friends and other artists of his time.......2006-01-05
With the back matter of three short appendices, lengthy notes, lengthy bibliography, and index starting on page 280, this makes the text less than 300 pages. Danchev's biography on this early modernist artist relates his influence on contemporary artists and on modern art as well as influences on him mostly through Braque's relationships with others. The treatment is not a probing psychological study, nor an aesthetic critique and evaluation; but rather concentrates on aspects of Braque's everyday life--his friendships, his trips, his habits. Braque's long and fertile relationship with Picasso was central to Braque's creativity. Danchev also spends time on Braque's marriage to Marcelle Vorvanne, giving her a mini-biography of her own. Another important relationship for Braque was with Jean Paulhan, one of the editors of "Nouvelle Revue Francaise," who "became [the artist's] greatest tribune and celebrant." Paulhan wrote about Braque's painting, "[I]t is without doubt that his work is at all times strangely complete and sufficient...[with the ultimate] feeling of a delay enjoyed, and an obligation fulfilled." Such observations from others in Braque's life are not only illuminating and stimulating in themselves, but accrue to cast light on the complexities and enigma of Braque--as with any historically significant artist--and his paintings; several of which are shown in color plates. Danchev has written other biographies and is a professor in the School of Politics at the U. of Nottingham.

Book Description
An incisive exploration of the still life genre as artists have rediscovered and reshaped it in the 20th century, Objects of Desire proves that despite the century's hostility toward older aesthetic conventions, avant-garde artists of many schools have made of the still life a vital opportunity for invention. From Matisse, Picasso, and Braque to the Dadaists, Surrealists, and Pop artists and finally to contemporary creators like Cindy Sherman and Charles Ray, the still life has hardly led a stolid, stable, or staunch existence. Originally a subject reserved for painting, the genre has progressively invaded the arena of sculpture, its themes reinvented in the provocative assemblages called "readymades," its forms recast continuously into the present. Published to accompany a major 1997 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Objects of Desire traces a radical rethinking of the genre in terms of subject matter and formal invention.

Dilbert in the Artplace.......2006-11-02
While doing research for an essay on the "Search for Postmodernism in a Modernist World," I purchased Ms Rowell's book, curiously titled Objects of Desire. At the very least, it was a questionable investment. However, it is indicative of what is wrong with the world of modern art [or even postmodern art] where pretentious jargon takes the place of actual description, reason or discussion as an excuse for art works that in the end are just boring.
At the time of the book's publication, Ms Rowell was allegedly a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her explanation of Postmodernism gets at the heart of the matter in such a way that I am compelled to quote her at length, in particular her explanation regarding the bridge between pastiche and schizophrenia:
"The possibility of pastiche -- its neutrality and blankness - presupposes that individualism is dead. The copy is impersonal; the model is either indifferent, forgotten, or never existed. High modernism, however, was "predicated on the invention of a personal private style... This means that the modernist aesthetic is in some way a unique personality and individuality, which can be expected to generate its own unique vision of the world, and to forge its own unique, unmistakable style." Yet today, scientists, social scientists, and cultural critics are "exploring the notion that that [sic] kind of individualism and personal identity is a thing of the past; that the old individual or individualist subject is `dead'; and that one might even describe the concept of the unique individual and the theoretical basis of individualism as ideological." Thus the old models of modernism are no longer viable. As we know, schizophrenia is defined as a basic breakdown of relationships - because objects in a perceptual field, for example and between words and their meaning or content, or between words and each other as a continuous fabric of meaning in a linguistic system. As a result, the schizophrenic has no concept of time as linear, interconnected, and sequential, and none either of personal identity as a selection and interrelation of certain specific human potentials at the expense of others. Conversely, because the schizophrenic does not (indeed cannot) search for meaning behind the object, behind the word, or within the unhierarchical unfolding of the field of experience, he or she has an experience of the present and of its objects that is "overwhelmingly vital and `material'... ever more material - or better still, literal - ever more vivid in sensory ways." ... Pashtiching the objects of desire of our traditional landscape, they set a film of meaning (or nonmeaning) between themselves and ourselves. In their deliberate displacement and disconnection from familiar circuits of meaning - whether aesthetic or real - these surrogates or simulacra embody another register of experience, that of the signs and systems of the postmodern world." [Rowell, 194-195]
Is there anything more that can be added after such an erudite analysis? Perhaps there is. However, the analysis does cause one to ask a number of questions. Did anyone buy this book for anything other than the pictures? How does one get a job as a curator in a major museum? And more to the point, was there an editor, or was the editor on vacation when page after page of turgid, incoherent and virtually incomprehensible pseudo-intellectualism made its way to print? Or perhaps this presentation is meant to be a literary representation of Postmodernism, most likely a parody of postmodern Deconstructionist style. One can only hope that this is satire - the world of Dilbert in the "artplace." Dramatic readings of her text have provided considerable entertainment for my friends and family, who found it quite amusing.

Publisher's Notes:.......2007-09-18
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Limited
From the Publisher
This interdisciplinary collection by historians, cultural critics and literary scholars examines a variety of the political, social, and cultural forces at work during the English Renaissance and beyond, forces that contributed to creating a wealth of artistic, literary and historical impressions of Elizabeth, her court, and the time period named after her, the Elizabethan age.
Articles in the collection discuss Elizabeths' relationships, investigate the advice given her, explore connections between her court and the arts, and consider the role of Elizabeth's court in the political life of the nation. Some of the ways Elizabeth was understood and represented demonstrate society's fears and ambivalence about early modern women in power, while others celebrate her successes as England's first and only unmarried queen regnant.
This volume will be of interest to scholars and students in a wide range of disciplines, including literary, cultural, historical and women's studies, as well as those interested in the life and times of Elizabeth I.
About the Author:

Synopsis
A dozen essays from the 2000 meeting of the Shakespeare Association of American in Montreal explore the queen's relationships, the advice she was given, connections between her court and the arts, and the role of her court in the country's political life. Some consider how the ways in which she was understood and represented demonstrate the fear and ambivalence in which women in power were held during early modern England, while others celebrate her success as England's first and only unmarried queen regnant. I wouldn't be amused either!.......2000-03-31
Three years ago, I added this book to my too-large collection of books about the Royal Family. I started re-reading it this week when looking up something about her disinterest in clothes while reading the reports of her visit to Australia. Whoever is doing her hats now should be drawn and quartered!
This is an enjoyable book and I can only feel a bit sorry for the Queen. For all of her worldly possessions, she leads a rather dreadful life. Smiling, looking interested, holding flowers, etc. must almost drive her out of her mind! She does a good job of it, though, and for that I give her credit. It's a good show. I've been watching it for over 40 years!
Informative and highly entertaining.......1999-12-13
One of the best books on the British Royal Family and on Queen Elizabeth in particular.
Reading this book one can see that Mr. Davies is quite knowledgeable and has done his homework where researching the subject is concerned.
Queen Elizabeth may not be easily amused - and she has every right not to be - but I certainly was highly amused and entertained.
HM may not be amused but I sure was!.......1999-01-09
Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by the British Royal family; watching the weddings of both the Waleses and the Yorks, reading Majesty magazine each month, etc. I bought this book to find out more about the Queen and Prince Phillip. I finished this book within two days and still find myself drawn to it. The depth that the author reaches, describing the Queen's marriage, family, responsibilities, daily life - it is all covered with a thoroughness that makes the reader feel as though they knew Her Majesty personally. Undoubtedly there are other books available that detail Queen Elizabeth II's life, but this one will stand out due to it's ability to draw the reader into the world of this remarkable monarch.

Book Description
For generations, books on North Carolina history have included the names of only a few women. But in addition to such well-known and legendary figures as Queen Elizabeth I and Virginia Dare, a multitude of other women influenced the making of North Carolina. These women's stories have rarely been told, in part because their contributions tended to occur in the relative privacy of their families and communities.
This lively and comprehensive volume finally accords North Carolina women their long-awaited place in history. Margaret Supplee Smith and Emily Herring Wilson bring together a wealth of materials to demonstrate how North Carolina women lived, from the days of early native settlements to the end of World War II. Filled with names, places, colorful anecdotes, and more than two hundred photographs and documents that bring to life important moments in history, North Carolina Women establishes the critical influence of women in shaping the character and economy of the state and the values of its citizens.
The narratives embedded in women's history, presented chronologically, create an enormous landscape across timebroadly analyzed and meticulously detailed. By considering the particular contours of gender, race, class, religion, and geography, the authors reveal the diversity and complexity of women's lives and experiences. Interspersed throughout the book are biographies of twenty-two North Carolina women, from Cherokee Beloved Woman Nanye'hi and frontierswoman Rebecca Bryan Boone to civil rights scholar and priest Pauli Murray and political activist Gladys Avery Tillett.

This is a mcuh needed area of focus. Information of the contribution of women is difficult to find in history. Hopefully this book will provide ideas in future research at national or local levels.

She's the Queen mum she is.......2001-08-01
This is a lavish guide to the practically indistructable mother of the British Sovereign. She was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons to her fellow debs in 1919, she was Queen as George VI's wife, but to all of us she is just the Queen Mum, bless her; the plucky lady with the common touch, who shrugged off gunshot wounds after a quarrel about gambling debts in an East End boozer, the massive-armed matriarchal powerhouse who has no time for nonces or liberty-takers. A marvelous book.
A stunning array of photographs.......1999-10-09
Many of the photographs in this book are not new. They have been seen before in other publications. Athough there are some good new selections of photos used. In all cases however, the photographic reproductions in this book are excellent. A very nice, personal gift copy that I would be pleased to give to a friend.
Wonderful photographic history of Britain's Queen Mother.......1999-09-23
The photographs in this book are wonderful. A complete history of the life of the Queen Mother told through the pictures that appeared in The Daily Telegraph, this is a great buy.
