Book Description
“It comes as a great shock when the active and very articulate man you have shared your life with for sixty odd years has a stroke and loses all his speech.” Mick Sutton knew his wife, but could not speak her name. He could not write his own, could hardly make sense of the hospital menu, let alone read his paper or a book. His frustration was palpable. Then he met Fiona, his Speech Therapist, whose guidance worked wonders. Gradually she built up Mick’s speech and his ability to write grammatically. “I think if I had to describe Mick’s approach to rehabilitation it was that he saw it as a new job,” Fiona explains. “He was very disciplined and motivated, and I have no doubt that his letters and postcards sent to me during a world cruise, reproduced in this volume with very few language or stylistic corrections, will indicate his progress.” The letters and postcards written by Mick while on a world cruise is a saga of recovery and an inspiration for others who have to overcome the challenges of a stroke or similar unexpected changes or hurdles in their lives.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, but I still have my doubts.......2006-04-28
First off let me say that this is the most optimistic book on this "disease" that I know of. The author seems highly qualified and really knows his subject.
I have joint pain (hip and knee), and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. It seems to help. However, I have my doubts that these things "build" or "rebuild" cartilage. One orthopedic surgeon in L.A. wrote that there is no evidence that they build or rebuild it, and that from what he read, glucosamine only "mimics" Tylenol on a molecular level, so if you take it, the pain is less, but it is the same as taking an aspirin. Trust me, I would love to believe that these things actually rebuild my knees and restore cartilage, but like I said, I have real doubts about that now. Chondroitin - I have read and heard from doctors - cannot penetrate the stomach wall, and there is no way it can reach the joints, from what I read. Most Glucosamine studies are either too limited, or are from Europe from long ago, so it is highly doubtful if they are good studies. I looked up ginger on the Mayo clinic website, and it stated that ginger is not proven as a cure for arthritis, but some limited trials suggest it might help (Mayo has one of the best rheumatology and arthritis departments in the world). It gave the studies that show ginger helps against joint inflamation/pain only a "B", i.e., there is some evidence, but it is not iron-clad, that it works (but there is no evidence that it does any harm, either).
But I want to make it very clear that I am not a doctor or scientist, and so what I am relating here should be viewed as that of a moderately-well informed reader who is not a doctor. All I am doing is relating some doubts that I have read from doctors in this field, after doing some research into this.
I like the exercises and the general discussion of arthritis in this book. I would still highly recommend this book. It is one of the more optimist books on the subject, too. I like the book. I even bought the pills the doctor sells, Zingerflex, and I take them every day. They DO reduce my subjective pain, too. I have almost no knee issues now. However, like I said, I would treat glucosamine and ginger as pain reducers that are safer than other pain reducers, but I don't think chondroitin works, from my layman's reading on that, and I think ginger might work, or might not. Most doctors view glucosamine as effective at reducing pain.

Book Description
For the past ten years, Jean Anderson has been on a quest: to search out the most popular recipes of the 20th century and to chronicle 100 years of culinary change in America. The result is a rich and fascinating look at where we've been, at the recipes our mothers and grandmothers loved, and at how our own tastes have evolved.
The more than 500 cherished recipes in these pages are mainstays of American home cooking, the recipes that have remained favorites year after year. For the smallest sampling:
California dip . . . Buffalo chicken wings . . . vichyssoise . . . tuna-noodle casserole . . . Swiss steak . . . frosted meat loaf . . . tamale pie . . . corn dogs . . . lobster rolls . . . classic green bean bake . . . perfection salad . . . green goddess salad . . . frozen fruit salad . . . chiffon cake . . . brownies . . . chocolate chip cookies . . . chocolate decadence
Beyond this collection is Jean's exploration of the diversity of our nation's cuisine and our adoption of such "foreign" dishes as pizza, gazpacho, lasagne, moussaka, and tarte tatin. Her painstakingly researched text includes extensive headnotes, thumbnail profiles of important people and products (from Fannie Farmer to James Beard and from electric refrigerators to the microwave), and a timeline of major 20th-century food firsts.
In recording popular recipes that might have been lost, in setting them in richly detailed historical context, Jean Anderson has written her masterwork. The American Century Cookbook may well be the most important new cookbook of the decade; it is certainly the book America will love.

Easy to follow, step-by-step methods to lay out, analyze, and optimize your new homebuilt aircraft concept
Customer Reviews:
Excellent first book for wannabe homebuilt aircraft designers.......2007-07-21
Most aircraft design texts are university textbooks or industry references, and out of hundreds of pages you might find a few dozen that are helpful for the amateur experimental aircraft designer/homebuilder. This book, however, wastes not a single page. After the obligatory "don't blame me if you kill yourself" intro (would sloppy designer/builders read a book like this anyway?), the book gets right down to business.
The first four chapters cover the most important question: "Why?" Why do you want to design an airplane? The answer determines the aircraft configuration, size, wing loading, fuel capacity, etc., and all these items and more are discussed.
Once that's sorted out, Chapter 5 begins the "How", starting with how to actually loft (draw) the overall airplane shape. This chapter has one of the most detailed and useful descriptions of conic and flat-wrap lofting I've seen in any design reference.
Chapter 6 is only a few pages long, discussing crashworthiness and flutter prevention. Important stuff, but basically punted to other references.
In Chapter 7 you analyze your drawing, calculate the basic aerodynamic coefficients and do a preliminary structural design and weight analysis. I commend the author for a halfway-decent overview of structural design--most of the aerodynamically-oriented texts seem to be afraid to touch this topic at all. Chapter 8 continues with range and performance calculations, and finally Chapter 9, titled "Let's Make It Better", covers the inevitable design reiteration when the analysis results indicate that your "How" and your "Why" are miles apart.
Finally, there is a brief but great appendix with useful tables and graphs, such as the weight and horsepower of most of the engines commonly seen on homebuilts and the weight and density of common homebuilt aircraft materials and components.
The foreword by Peter Garrison really summarizes this book nicely: an airplane designer needs to gather a disparate amount of material from a large number of different sources, and this book helps organize that task, and with a particular emphasis on the small planes of interest to the homebuilder.
Hint to this author or others: what I haven't found *anywhere* is a good structures text oriented toward small aircraft design. "Stress Without Tears" isn't bad, but a marriage of Bruhn with Nui's composites book, with a focus on small GA planes, would fill a *huge* hole for amateur designers. To really impress me, include examples of using open source CFD and FEA programs to assist the design effort :-)
Really Simplified .......2007-01-18
I think there are two teachers . One of them tells what he (she) read. Other tells what he (she) has experience. If they teach algebra it doesnt matter which kind teacher. But if they teach how you build an aircraft this time experience is golden. I am a turk. English is not my natural language. I believe I understood. If you dont hear that a turk died because of his own homebuilt aricraft's crashed then you can believe that I understood. thank you.
Review by a home kit builder.......2007-01-10
Just excellent- did the basics, was nicely humorous, and gave references and caveats where required and useful. GOod book!
Highly Recommend.......2006-07-03
I really like this book. Dr. Raymer has done a terrific job of taking a really complex subject and guiding you through it all in way that makes sense to the average aviation buff or builder. It is a great place to start if you want to learn all about how an aircraft works, how the different parts of an aircraft affect each other, and to inspire your dreams to build your own. Once you are done with this one move on the sister book by Dr. Raymer it will open your eyes even more.
Good introduction to small airplane design........2006-03-31
You will need math, make no mistake about that. You'll also need to have access to an Excel or OpenOffice spread sheet program. This book will give you an appreciation of the complexity and trade offs of small airplane design. This book covers the aero aspect of airplane design. You'll need lots more mechanical engineering knowledge to actually design the airplane hardware. Mechanical engineering is not covered by this book.

A Keen Insight of Early 20th Century Lanscape Architecture.......2000-03-18
Dr. Longest's work, "Genius in the Garden" is a brilliant achievement. While precise in scholarship, the text is a tremendously enjoyable read. Academician and lay-person alike will easily absorb every sentence. It is a rare joy to find such a masterful use of language combined with such superlative research detail. Dr. Longest's text and supporting references are flawless.
Anyone; art or general historian, architect, landscape architect, garden designer, researcher of Virginia/Richmond history, or pure devote of the garden, nature, and beauty will thoroughly appreciate and enjoy "Genius in the Garden."
Charles Gillette played a pivotal design role in early 20th century Virginia, which was felt thorought the country. His ouevre was a developement and transliteration of the uniquely American "Jekyll & Lutyens" synthesis of natural and formal garden design. His career reflected both a poetic and ideal type of style. Gillette, his contemporaries, and the 'zeigheist' which motivated them, were never surpassed in the 20th century or today.
George Longest's definitive history and biography tributes this genius eye-to-discerning-eye. The photographs are lush, vivid, and constructive. As mentioned the text and supporting documentation is impeccable. No one should regret this lovely book as a welcome addition to their library.

"Everything we say to each other echoes with meanings left over from our past experience--both our history talking to the person before us at this moment and our history talking to others," says Deborah Tannen, one of the world's most famous linguists. We react not only to the message, but to the "metamessage": our interpretation of the unstated meaning, based on tone, relationship, and our past associations. Add in the connections and control issues among family members, and it's no wonder families have so much trouble understanding each other!
I Only Say This Because I Love You is aimed mostly at adult family interactions. Professor Deborah Tannen, the popular author of You Just Don't Understand, uses anecdotes filled with dialogues to illustrate why we hear criticism when the other person meant to convey caring, how family members create alignments with secrets and broken confidences, the dynamics of arguments, the power of apologies, gender patterns in family talk, and communication with teens. You're bound to recognize your family members--and yourself!--in Tannen's examples.
You won't find quick, easy answers for improving communication in your family, but you will discover another dimension of understanding what's really going on. Now if you could just get your mother to read the book! --Joan Price
Book Description
Why does talk in families so often go in circles, leaving us tied up in knots? In this illuminating book, Deborah Tannen, the linguist and and bestselling author of
You Just Don't Understand and many other books, reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic even when we're all adults. Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism and judgment? In
I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages — unstated but powerful meanings that come from the history of our relationships and the way things are said. Presenting real conversations from people's lives, Tannen reveals what is actually going on in family talk, including how family conversations must balance the longing for connection with the desire for control, as we struggle to be close without giving up our freedom.
This eye-opening book explains why grown women so often feel criticized by their mothers; and why mothers feel they can't open their mouths around their grown daughters; why growing up male or female, or as an older or younger sibling, results in different experiences of family that persist throughout our lives; and much, much more. By helping us to understand and redefine family talk, Tannen provides the tools to improve relationships with family members of every age.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous new insights to relationships of all kinds.......2002-02-13
Chapter 1 of Tannen's latest book provides some fabulous new insights to relationships of all kinds. Her discussions of the connection-control schema and meta-messages concept allow the reader to gain new perspectives on those sometimes frustrating interactions with loved ones (or coworkers, or strangers...). The rest of the book is really just "gravy" on top of the information in Chapter 1. Wow, I loved this book-- a definite recommendation to anyone interested in better understanding relationship communication (I see my mother's "advice," formerly a source of frustration/anger, in a whole new light!).
I Only Say This to be Honest.......2001-08-25
Would that it were true that family relationships came down to the words we use when we talk to one another. Tannen tries to wrestle complex family dynamics into conversational styles, and fails dismally. Much of the "insights" are superficial, suggestions for improving relationships minimal, and the examples provided are tedious and boring. I had high hopes for this book but it provided little that was useful to me.
Solid Information, but haven't we heard it before?.......2001-08-20
I loved Tannen's _You Just Don't Understand_ because of the fresh insights it provided, so I was especially disappointed when _I Only Say This Because I Love You_ failed to provide the same feeling of discovery and excitement.
The book focuses on the frequent difference between the actual words that are spoken, and the meaning behind the words (meta-message), which is often about trying to create more connectedness or to alter the power and control dynamics of the relationship.
I found it interesting, but not revolutionary (and I'd come to expect revolutionary from Dr. Tannen).
By understanding the meta-messages both from ourselves and from others, we should have more power to address the meta-messages directly and not get involved in petty bickering and emotional responses that go nowhere except round-and-round.
Overall, I would say that the book contains useful insights and helpful advice, but for people who have already spent time analyzing their intimate relationships, there's probably not much new.
why can't you communicate with so-and-so? find out!.......2001-08-13
I considered myself a good communicator. Then I read this book. It brought things to my attention that I was unaware of, about how I communicate with those closest to me. I was confronted with my own mistakes, in a way that I could not deny, and it motivated me to work on those areas right away! I also saw everybody else I know in this book--because it is about the mistakes we all make. It encompasses all of the different family relationships there are, goals of communication, why certain communication styles don't work, and suggestions for making it easier. The best chapter of all was called "I'm sorry, I'm not apologizing." It talked about why women apologize more than men, why apologizing is harder for men, power issues involved with apologizing, issues around accepting responsibility, and most importantly, the key components of a good apology. I will definitely have a better marriage as a result of reading this book, and I will be recommending it to everyone I know. It was interesting reading, and for me, hard to put down. It is an accessable and very knowledgable reference.
Insightful reference on the levels of how we communicate.......2001-08-08
Exceptional reference for the verbal and the non verbal communicator. Best analogy "Do you hear what I mean?" As a wife of a non verbal communicator and a mother of three one who masters the english language and has strong communication skills to the youngest who struggle with basic communication, I have personally found this title to be instrumental in navigating through our own family and our verbal form of expression.
When exposed to those that struggle with the command of the english language I have had to learn new ways to communicate. This tile is completely on target and goes to posture, stance, tone and so much more.
How our presentation can make a positive or negative impact on the receiver. Often our intent of caring is misunderstood due to our presentation and/or the preconceived disposition of our intended audience.
After reading I was able to grasp the fact that sometimes no matter what was said it was improperly "processed." Truly it is the processing that counts most. Understanding that not everyone processes the same information in the same fashion can be eye opening and yet become an obvious reality.
The author drives home that we need to educate and understand and to be educated and understanding with our communication skills.
