5 out of 5 stars A Dragon Lives Forever.......2005-04-15

This is one monumental book, in that the author weaves together his personal experiences from notes he kept in a journal, along with a fictional novel that he constructed from those events, during his tour. He also flashes backwards and forwards with his life before Vietnam and then returning on rice business much later. In so doing, he develops the very story we all went through as young men in college in the early to mid-sixties, who did not mind a military obligation or the hardships of deployment to SE Asia, and served well. (This is three books in one.)
I was a helicopter pilot with the 175th Outlaws and know the Vi Thanh area well. IT was a very hostile province, and the VC owned it and all the territory to Rach Gia and the U Minh Forest. Tom Hargrove describes life with the MACV teams very specifically, and superbly addresses their thoughts and intentions while living so sparsely. The dangers of interactions with the local VN are so typical; it is a wonder we all survived our valiant attempts at pacification.

This necessary book covers the Advisor side of the war, which was much more commonplace than the conventional war, being waged "Up North" with the American divisions. For those of you who want to read about this realistic Vietnam conflict in the hinterlands, read this book of outpost living and agrarian assistance to these poor rice paddy farmers. Way to go, Tom!! It was always nice to climb back into our Huey and return to Vinh Long after resupplying you guys! A lot of truth here, and maybe it has taken all these years to get it out--the way we lived our war in the Delta...

4 out of 5 stars Eating Out Guide.......2007-09-12

If you eat out or on the run, this is a great book to have in the car. Make better decisions

4 out of 5 stars helpful within limits.......2007-05-10

The information in this book is wonderfully helpful for planning before dining out. However, it is mostly fast-food information, rather than actual restaurants. Though the difficulty in assessing dietary exchanges in restaurant settings was explained, I hope that a future edition of this book would include more information from restaurants.

5 out of 5 stars Removes all the guess working out of eating out.......2007-05-07

I consider this book to be a completely indespensible resource for a diabetic. I've found this book to be useful in two different ways: #1 for just browsing through some of the restaurants and menu items to give you an idea about nutritional information in general. For example, you can peruse through a listing like "Starbucks" and learn how many carbs are in their various beverages, and then common things like bagels. Maybe you don't even like going to Starbucks, but such information is essential to know wherever you do go.

The second way this book is useful is to just pop in your suitcase or in your car when you travel. That way it just takes all the guesswork or awkwardness out of situations where you need to eat out, perhaps at restaurants you are not so familiar with. Just a quick glance at this book will tell you what will work for you and what won't.

5 out of 5 stars For eating healthier when you eat out.......2007-03-05

Even though fast food gets a bad rap, there are ways of eating healthier when having to eat out and this book shows you how. Sometimes foods may look better or worse than they seem because of hidden ingredients or factors you may not think of. This book helps you find the real numbers for a large variety of chain restaurants/fast food and takes the guesswork out of carb counting. I have my favorites marked with paper clips. I don't eat out without it.

1 out of 5 stars A Diabetic Menu Guide That Does NOT List Sugar Contents!?.......2007-01-10

My dad bought this book to assist his diet concerning his diabetes, but I am disappointed with it, namely because it does not have a SUGAR column on its Fast Food tables of Menus! I understand that carbs add up to becoming sugar and such, but why did they not list Sugar in a book for diabetics!

It puts a best bet check mark by different menu items, but I get the impression that these are merely the lesser evils on the fast food menus. Unfortunately, my dad sees the check marks and insists that these are healthy food items for him, for example, the Wendy's Jr. Frosty!

I think that most people can just go online to their most favorite fast food restaurant web sites and download the nutritional information there, which will include the sugar content! I did that with the Wendy's Jr. Frosty and found out it has 21g of Sugar! If my dad saw that on a Nutritional Label on a grocery store item, he would refuse to buy it! I wish I had been with him when he was shopping and bought this book, because I would have pointed out this major omission of Sugar information that is lacking in this book!

This book may have its uses when used properly, or for folks who don't care about their Sugar intake, but from my experience with my elderly father who desperately needs to eat RIGHT for his diabetes, this book is making it harder for me to get him to do so!

5 out of 5 stars Complete Guide to Carb counting.......2007-10-11

This book really explains carb counting and all that goes with it. It has helped me plan my meals since I was diagnosed with diabetes

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-09-16

Overall I thought this book was pretty light on the information. Not many restaurants. I found that their suggested meals often weren't the healthiest choices.

    5 out of 5 stars concise.......2007-05-13

This was exactly what I wanted. I do wish, however, that more restaurants were included. I would buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Handy guide for a small-scale butcher or more.......2007-06-05

Being a meat technologist and having spent twenty years in the meat seasoning business I bought this book for curiosity and to enlarge my library of professional cookbooks. I couldn't have made a better choice. The Kutases (originally Latvian?) have a very practical approach in their book. Anyone who plans to set up a butchershop can benefit from their handy hints. On the other hand even the seasoning suggestions for a variety of sausages seem useful.

If you will go to http://www.sausagemaker.com you can buy this book 3rd edition brand new for $29.95 and the book with DVD for $39.95. I paid what everyone was asking here on Amazon as a used book, it's insane what they are asking for...over $100. I did not do enough research, save yourself some money, unless you are looking for a vintage gift, first edition, buy it from the source. This book is fantastic and the best resource for this topic. If anyone knows where you can get food grade sodium acetate though, please share your knowledge. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely, THE best!.......2000-12-15

His book is excellent. As the previous reviewers indicated, I also give him many thumbs up.

Now - what are you waiting for? Order the book and enjoy what you make!

You will NOT find a book full of pretty color pictures - what you will find is a book loaded with important step-by-step instructions. ...And if you are not into sausage making -you must know a relative who is. Buy it for them in that case!

5 out of 5 stars I've Used this Book for Years.......2000-11-22

As a professional chef, I have taught sausage making and charcuterie to students and other professionals throughout the U.S. This is the book I use for reference. It is easy to follow and very comprehensive.

I like the fact that Rytek is a second generation cuiseur-de-chair and draws his knowledge from practical experience. The resources in his book are from his mail-order house- "The Sausage Maker" in Buffalo, N.Y which carries everything you could imagine to make any kind of sausage.

Legend has it that the forest of the world are inhabited by elusive creatures known as "Wood Spirits." Tom Wolfe finds them everywhere and brings them to life in this delightful new instructional book. Using found wood such as driftwood, roots, and old beams from dilapidated barns, he leads the reader through the carving of wondrous, fanciful faces, that are both enchanting and beautiful. On a smaller scale, Tom also finds the Wood Spirits in walking sticks, creating treasures that are handsome and functional at the same time. Tom has been carving these Spirits for years, and they are constantly in demand. Now he leads the carver, step-by-step, through their creation, each step illustrated in beautiful color photographs. An extensive gallery is included, jam-packed with examples and ideas for the reader's own work.

                                  , 250+ color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"

The book is good for very young carvers. The pictures are great and the author does show everything. As a matter for discussion the author provides too much detail and if you need lots of detail then this book is what young starters can use effectively.

Although it does cover the subject and offer examples for inspiration, it does so in very broad strokes. I had hoped for mre istruction and less inspiration.

I used this book as a basis for all my carvings, This book actually started me in the buisness of woodcarving and I created my first Walking stick from the instructions therein.

Two years ago I purchased this book and a set of six tools. My goal was to create a hobby that was rewarding and relaxing. I can truthfully say that I have never been more satisfied with any purchase. I have found a world of enjoyment from the simple act of cutting wood. In three days, I will exhibit in my first show, The Tupelo Gum Tree Festival, Tupelo, MS. I have never been more relaxed and proud of anything I have done before. Thank you Tom Wolfe! Dennis Renfro

Grownups don't like being corrected, scolded, or peppered with silly questions (or sillier requests), so why would babies? Yet babies get it in both ears, all day long: "No, no! Mustn't touch! Say 'apple', not 'apppppft!' What does the piggy say? Tell Mommy what the piggy says!"

Speech and language therapist Dr. Sally Ward concludes that not only do infants and toddlers dislike such talk, they can also suffer from too much of it--just as much as children who don't receive enough verbal stimulation. In the process of creating an intervention program to help kids with existing language problems, Ward and colleague Derdre Birkett also discovered that these BabyTalk techniques could actually prevent language problems from ever developing. The prescription: 30 minutes of your undivided attention a day, where baby's job is to explore and your job is to provide a quiet environment, age-appropriate commentary, game playing, and sensory stimuli.

Ward organizes her clinically supported recommendations by age group, starting with the birth-to-3-months crowd and concluding with 4-year-olds. Each chapter covers an age group's typical physical and mental development, as well as language recognition and use, listening ability, and attention span. As Ward goes on to detail appropriate playtime activities, she often reminds readers to avoid disruptive patterns of questioning, correcting, and scolding. Better to offer simple comments and lots of sound effects, and to repeat your baby's utterances, than to launch into wordy descriptions. Throughout the book, Ward expertly adds a documented study here, an anecdote there, to cinch her case for quality one-on-one time. Never stuffy and only slightly motherly (the author likes the phrase "your little child"), BabyTalk provides encouraging words and proven tools for building a solid learning foundation. --Liane Thomas

                                    5 out of 5 stars Very effective!.......2007-02-21

When my daughter was 18 months, she would say "ball" and "car" and that was it. She didn't point to body parts at that point or follow other simple commands.

I found the book BabyTalk: Strengthen Your Child's Ability to Listen, Understand, and Communicate by Dr. Sally Ward to be very helpful. The author is a speech therapist in England who has done studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of her BabyTalk program. The book is divided by age from birth to 4 years old, and describes what children should be able to do at each age and how to help them develop further. It took a little while to understand the organization of the book by age and how to implement the program. That could be spelled out a little more clearly. However, I was able to figure it out pretty quickly and it was well worth it.

Basically, I needed to use very simple sentences like, "That's a book" and make an effort to teach my daughter vocabulary. It's very simple to implement, but I didn't know what to do until the book spelled it out. My daughter has progressed very rapidly since then. At 19-1/2 months, she speaks over 60 words and has good comprehension for body parts and simple commands. She speaks a new word or two every day. I will continue to use the book as a guide to how to keep up with her developing abilities and help her progress further.

Dr Ward divided different ages into separate chapters and gives developmental characteristics for each age. The end of each chapter gives suggestions for interaction with your child. All of her suggestions were good, but are things we already do on a regular basis with our son.

                                    Her suggestions include:
-Give him opportunities to play near other children.
-Let him use large play equipment in the park.
-Don't let your sentences get too long.
                                    -Repeat what your child says.

Some of the information is repetitive, and many of the recommended activities are the same for each of the ages. Check it out of your library, but don't waste your money on it.

3 out of 5 stars A good book, but with faults........2004-04-11

Dr. Ward's book is clearly written, and based on fantastic concepts. My eldest son is autistic, and between research and personal observation, I have seen professionals use many of the techniques Dr. Ward describes. By using this book, you will be, essentially, performing as a speech therapist for thirty minutes a day.

If you are looking for insight in a book like this, you are going to have to be willing to open your mind and accept that some of your personal concepts will have to be changed, that some facts will go against your personal understanding. Unfortunately, Dr. Ward presents both those facts and her personal opinions in the same light, making them indistinguishable.

As I said, the basis for her book is fantastic, and most of what she says is based on hard fact. A good bit, though, is based on her personal opinions on matters such as imagination, make believe, and electronic teaching techniques, and some of those opinions run contrary to established clinical studies and facts.

Read this book, but don't take its facts as being set in stone. Instead, consult other sources for your facts, make up your own mind on what is appropriate, and use Dr. Ward's book as a basic outline for a program for teaching your child.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for parents of newborns & toddlers.......2002-01-11

I was given this book when my son was 3 months old and have been recommending it and loaning it out to friends ever since. THe focus is on speech development, but it has great ideas for play and interaction at every stage of infancy thru age 4. While the author specializes in children with speech difficulties, this program is great for all children. My son is now 24 months old and ahead in speech for his age. He seemed to learn to speak really quickly and now many of his sentences are pretty long and complex, e.g. at the playground yesterday: "Mummy, that boy is really upset because his mother is going away", or "Mummy, please can you come and see what I'm doing". I attribute this pretty much to the BabyTalk program because the principles here have really determined how his Dad and I have interacted with him ever since we got the book. Being able to communicate really well already not only makes his life less frustrating (he has only ever had a handful of tantrums), it also sets him in good stead for the future academically. I had no background in early childhood development so it's been most helpful to have such a thorough and practical book to accompany his development. There are vital principles to learn about playing with, listening to, and talking to your child that are fundamental but easy to apply, and clearly presented here. It also warns you against very common ways of talking to young children (pointless questions, correcting, asking the child to say this or that, amongst others), which turn out to be quite harmful to their speech development. In addition to giving me needed ideas about structuring our play and interactions (I ran out of ideas and sometimes became a little bored before reading the great ideas in the book), it gives you the background in cognitive and sensory development that helps you understand why they are the way they are and what's going on inside their heads. It gives you a great respect for the child and their ability to learn. There are ideas for age appropriate games, conversation, books, and toys at each stage of development. It's based solidly on research and clinical experience. This is a gem of a book and I am so thankful that I was given it early on, but it doesn't matter at what stage you get started. Go ahead and get it!

5 out of 5 stars An easy method to help your child communicate........2001-06-25

Along with "Baby Signs," this book should be on the shelf of any person who wants to help boost their child's communication skills. The author advocates a daily 1/2 hour playtime during which you eliminate all distractions so that you can have one on one time with your baby/toddler/preschooler to play with her toys and focus on talking with her. One of the main points presented is that you should never outright correct a child's speech, ask them to repeat words, or ask them questions demanding an answer as this can make them feel belittled and actually hinder their speech development. Instead you should simply repeat the word back to them in its correct form and use short, direct sentences so that they can follow the words.

"Baby Talk" is full of great advice for helping your child to listen and understand. There are suggestions for toys and books for each age group (the program is for children birth to age four) and it also lists signs to look for in the case that she might need a speech therapist.

                                      Book Description

Doris Ulmann (1882-1934), one of the foremost photographers of the early part of the twentieth century, had a deep and lasting love affair with the dignity and complexity of the human condition. Born into a New York Jewish family with a tradition of service, Ulmann sought to portray and document individuals from various groups that she feared would change or vanish altogether from American life.

Inspired by the paintings of the European old masters and by the photographs of Hill and Adamson and Clarence White, Ulmann produced unique and substantial portrait studies of writers, educators, and society figures from her Park Avenue studio. Later, she traveled throughout the middle Atlantic, Appalachia, and the deep South. Using an old-fashioned view front camera, she sought to document the beauty, mystery, and diversity of the American people. Her subjects included Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, African American basket weavers from South Carolina, Shakers, and Kentucky mountain musicians.

Ulmann's photographs, particularly her portraits, have been compared to Rembrandt's work, especially in their use of light. Even when she worked as a photographic documentarian in recording a young African American woman packing asparagus, Ulmann still approached her subject from the perspective of a painter. She strove to create dignified and respectful photographic renderings of people often dishonored or ignored. To this end, Ulmann created over 10,000 photographs and illustrated five books, including Roll, Jordan, Roll and Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands.

In this first full biography of a fascinating, gifted artist, Philip Jacobs examines newly discovered letters, documents, and photographs—many published here for the first time—to bring his subject to life. He profiles Ulmann's intimate relationships with writer Julia Peterkin and folk song collector (and paramour) John Jacob Niles. Including a catalog of her photographs, this richly illustrated work secures Ulmann's rightful place in the history of American photography.

Doris Ulmann spent her adult life trying to create respectful, revealing photos of the Afro-Americans Appalachians whom she thought had been traditionally dishonored in images: Life And Photography Of Doris Ulmann uses correspondence between Ulmann and her assistant to explore their relationship, her work and social contributions, and the blend of art and social commentary which her photos embodied. Duotones blend with text in a presentation which is more a study than a photo documentary, and which will please any studying social photography.

This book is a well researched presentation of the life and art of Doris Ulmann. It tells of her early success with her husband and later success on her own. Mr. Jacobs has done an excellect job of researching Ulmann's life. He has discovered long forgotten letters and collections of her photographs to fill out her story. It is more than a coffee table piece. Even those knowledgable in the field will learn more.
