Book Description
The Civil War tore Maryland in half. Young George Wilson Booth followed the call of the Confederacy and served four years under the banners of the Army of Virginia. During the bright days of the early successes at both Manassas battles and in smaller tussles, from the Peninsula to the Valley, Booth saw history being made. He served with Stonewall Jackson, "Grumble" Jones, Dick Ewell, Jubal Early, and John Imboden. Wounded at Greenland Gap, he arrived late at Gettysburg—probably to his good fortune. Promoted to captain, Booth was in the Valley in the final days and was present at the burning of Chambersburg. An unreconstructed rebel, Booth tells his story simply and straightforwardly, perhaps because he intended this book for friends and family and therefore felt no need to be "literary." The result is a dramatic, powerful, and honest account that takes its place among the best of the Confederate memoirs.

An articulate account by a Confederate with many experiences.......2003-03-01
There are very few Civil War memoirs from Marylanders who fought with the Confederacy and "A Maryland Boy in Lee's Army" begins to correct that deficiency. As the introduction, written by a national park service historian, explains, George Wilson Booth was an extremely intelligent, sixteen year old Baltimorean who joined the Army of Northern Virginia in 1861. Booth begins by explaining that it was "at the request of somewhat partial friends" that he decided to record this period of his life in book form and he writes to show how bravely and valiantly men of the Old Line State fought in the Civil War.
Booth records his thoughts on succession on the first page, writing, "the dissolution of the Union was looked upon as a threatened evil, to be averted by mutual concession and forbearance." A few lines later he mentions slavery for one of the only times writing "that never for one moment did the question of slavery or the perpetuation of that institution enter into the decision of my course." Getting into the action, he records how he saw the first violence of the war in Baltimore when the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment came through and a riot ensued. Booth somewhat humorously relays that he "quickly realized [his] danger and was convinced that [he] was entirely out of place [as he] had no weapon save a penknife." From there his account proceeds chronologically.
Unfortunately, Booth's descriptions of major battles lack detail. He only records his own observations and assumes that the reader is familiar with all the major encounters. However, he did not intend to write a military history of the conflict, as is seen in his statement "I do not propose to say much as to Gettysburg." Instead, Booth provides an inside look and analysis of the Maryland units which fought in the Confederate Army and has frequent praise for them. He writes that "the 1st Maryland regiment was of so high an order and their record as soldiers [was] brilliant" and "there was more life and sprit in the average Maryland soldier than in a score of those from the interior of some of the Southern States." George Booth also gives detailed accounts of several small skirmishes and actions that he was involved with as when he describes the storming of a church in which Federal troops were barricaded and the time that a flaming, explosive-filled train was sent hurtling along the tracks in his direction.
Booth's descriptions of Confederate generals are even more useful. The Maryland soldier explains that Gen. Stonewall Jackson was "naturally so combative and earnest in his work that whenever brought into contact with the enemy his first and only promptings were to strike the blow." He later describes news of Jackson's death as "the saddest intelligence that could come to moral ears." Booth records that Robert E. Lee was "a bold soldier, a master of strategy and a vigorous fighter" in whom the army "had implicit confidence." Booth's keen observations are turned on nearly all major Southern military leaders, including J. E. B. Stuart, who is called "the Rupert of the Confederacy." In that same passage, Booth goes on to call Stuart, "like our great captains-the noble Lee and the lamented Jackson- . . . a devoted Christian, who illustrated in his daily work the teachings of Christ."
Booth lightens the tale of war with his wit and humor very effectively. At one point, he explains a situation in which his unit was nearly captured by the enemy by declaring "the jig came very near being up with us" and at another point some mosquitoes are called "the vilest, most ravenous and bloodthirsty of their kind." Booth also points out the irony of a Calvinist protecting his life by hiding behind a tree during one violent battle and records a Presbyterian officer as provoking the Calvinist by saying "if it is ordained you are to be killed, the tree will not save you." At many points his humor is much understated as when, after the war when asked if he were related to John Wilkes Booth, he "disclaimed any connection with the assassin of Mr. Lincoln, and remarked that it occurred to me to be a very unnecessary question, as it was scarcely probably I would acknowledge a relationship under existing circumstances even if it were true in fact."
Throughout, Booth is never far from his central argument over the valor of the Marylanders in and the Army of Northern Virginia and Confederates in general. He writes that the 1st Maryland Cavalry "[did] honor to the state which it represented" and "the work of the Maryland Cavalry . . . won . . . most distinguished notice." Of that unit's commander, Col. Ridgely Brown, Booth writes, "he was as true as steel and as gallant a soldier as ever mounted horse or drew a blade." While the author respected Grant for his gentlemanly treatment of the defeated Lee, he credits the Northerner's victory mainly to "his immense superiority in numbers" and not to any greater bravery in Union troops (106). But Booth shows himself to be fair and praises both the Federal infantry and cavalry late in the war, calling the later "superb."
Throughout the account, Booth is seen to be very intelligent and highly educated. As the introduction reveals, after the war he eventually became the comptroller of the B&O Railroad. In his memoirs, he shows knowledge of such diverse subjects as geography, theology, and history and, as Eric Mink points out in the book's introduction, as Booth's intended audience were the men who had shared his experiences, the account can be taken as being without embellishment. His diverse experiences, which include administering a prison camp and meeting the Confederate Vice President, make this account more valuable than most. The Civil War divided the nation and Maryland was split deeper than most states. The account of George Wilson Booth, a Marylander who sided with the Confederacy, can help historians understand the deep divisions in the nation.
Dull intrigue..........2002-10-03
Can there be a book that is dull yet have some intrigue? Booth's book on his Civil War life was rather disappointing to read. It contained very little personal thought in regards to camp life and fighting in battles he was engaged in. He sometimes skipped his narrative to stop the story and give a quick history lesson on what occurred. Such was true with the Sharpsburg Campaign which I would have rather read his thoughts, reactions or what he was doing at the time. Booth's 1st Maryland is later disbanded and refitted for Cavalry in which Booth is involved yet his personal story is second to a history tale of the Union and Confederate movements surrounding the Virginia and Maryland areas. At times Booth intrigued me with his story of how they attempted to free Confederate hostages in a church held by tough Union forces in which Booth is shot in the leg and the quick skirmish ends in many bloody fatalities. Stories such as these was what I was looking for. What I tired of reading was how Lee left Pennsylvania or how Pope was turned around at 2nd Manassas.
Booth is less than descriptive on his movements at times which seemed blury and though he can talk about a battle historically, he certainly doesn't set the reader up for his involvement or easily explain his movements. I have found this true in other memoirs written by soldiers though this one can't be ranked like Sam Watkin's book or other well known Civil War biographies. This book is a quick read of 170+pages though if the battle histories were erased it and the book just focussed on Booth, the book probably would have been half of that. This book was rather dull and boring at times.

Book Description
First women's health book to deal with the environmental toxins and lifestyle habits that act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals causing profound damage to ovarian and thyroid hormones, leaving thousands of premenopausal women infertile and suffering from symptoms of hormone dysfunction previously associated with much older women. Devastating symptoms such as premature puberty, endometriosis, headaches, PCOS, obesity, diabetes, chronic fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia and more are all on the rise. Despite warnings from environmental scientists, healthcare simply isn't addressing these issues. From diet drinks, plastic food wrappers, phytoestrogens in food and supplements to common household pesticides and cleaning products, Dr. Vliet identifies these endocrine disruptors and provides a plan to combat them and lead a healthy life.
No woman can afford to ignore these issues. Publishers Weekly states, "...women who want to be more knowledgeable and assertive patients will find it indispensable." Patient raves, "After bouncing from doctor to doctor with symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and heart palpititations, Dr. Vliet correctly diagnosed my hormonal problems. She gave me my life back!"
Customer Reviews:
My Mother Loved this book.......2007-01-16
My mother just turned 50 and has been noticing some changes that she has atributed to hormones. My uncle, a doctor, recommended this book to help her understand what is going on.
Overall my mom really seems to like this book and i would recommend it to other pre-menopausal women.
A Response to a male review.......2006-09-02
I have yet to read the book, but I was reading over the reviews and I found it funny that a male was so ticked off that Dr. Vliet only spoke of female issues.
For one, you just appear ignorant for being upset about a disease that will never inflict a male (i.e. PCOS). Secondly men do not visit the doctors as regularily as females do and to try and discredit Dr. Vliet is nonsense!
Most males if they have an ailment will tough it out and figure it will correct itself. I've witnessed many men later on in life get so depressed about their health conditions b/c they were negligent of their own health.
So in conclusion to my rant you truly cannot have any say so over a matter that does not inflict your sex. Better inform yourself on your own health problems and do not think you know all. Men like you in the medical field is why women have to suffer as much as they do b/c they are so selfish, uneducated and narrow minded.
The truth be told everyone needs to keep a better check on their nutrional/mineral value on a daily basis so things do not become out of whack.
THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!.......2006-02-25
I thought I was going crazy! I was only 26 years old and I was visiting 5 different doctors that were treating me for various problems (weight gain, migraines, acne, depression, hot flashes and recurrent yeast infections). Every doctor told me the same thing...."DIET and EXERCISE or YOU NEED AN ANTIDEPRESSANT"!!! Then I read this book... It all made sense!!! Dr. Vliet helped me understand that a hormone imbalance could affect every part of my body. I didn't waste any time. I called Dr. Vliet and made an appointment. She was the answer to my prayers!
I understand not everyone can call and make an appointment but reading this book helps you understand your body. It takes you step-by-step through what tests to ask for and how to read and interpret your results. Being in the "normal range" may not be so normal for your body!
You may not have PCOS but most women are on birth control pills and all women will eventually go thru Menopause. If you are a woman...read this book. Put your health and life back together.. Knowledge is Power!!!
FIVE STARS PLUS!.......2005-12-10
The title of this book jumped out at me and struck my curiousity. After reading the book and being totally blown away, I went to see Dr. Vliet in Texas for a second medical opinion. Words cannot express the positive improvement in my life as a direct result of Dr. Vliet. This fascinating book is full of true life examples and actual case studies based on her years of medical experience. Her writing style reflects wisdom, warmth, humor, expertise, encouragement, and HOPE.
Bravo, Dr. Vliet.......2005-11-14
Every woman should read this book!
I've suffered from PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) symptoms since my first period and went from doctor to doctor seeking help. As is typical, I was often told it was in my head. One doctor told me that my problem was: "The size of my ass and the amount of time I sit on it."
Forget that I was thin when the disorder first became debilitating. Another doctor told me that I couldn't have PCOS as I only had one cyst on my ovary--you don't have to have any cysts to have PCOS as Dr. Vliet explains in this book.
Many doctors out there are totally ignorant about PCOS and the complications it causes. A lot of them will put you on progesterone if you're having hormonal problems--though often the problem is estradiol deficiency (I've been there).
For me PCOS caused severe fatigue, depression, hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, lack of libido, 90 pounds of weight gain, excess body hair, muscle and joint pain, irregular periods, PMS that lasts all month, mood swings, IBS, and many other symptoms. I became an invalid in my mid-20's due to PCOS and the resulting estradiol decline it caused. I was a medical student with a 3.9 GPA but had to discontinue my studies due to the severe fatigue the hormone imbalance caused.
More recently, I've developed high blood pressure, hyperplasia of the uterine lining and heart problems--all complications of PCOS--I'm only 40.
All along, I knew the problem was my hormones, but doctors didn't believe me or didn't know what to do about it. This book was enlightening. I read it and thought: 'Finally there's a medical professional out there who understands.' I was elated!
Luckily, I recently found a doctor who seems to have a good grasp of the disorder (though no one compares to Vliet) and I'm beginning to feel a little better. Nothing can fix the damage that the disorder has done to my body over the years; however, and I wish I could have read a book like this long ago.
A lot of women write to me about hypoglycemia, and I always recommend this book. Again, every woman should read this book. I can't recommend this or Vliet's other books highly enough. I'm grateful to her for her body of work and for helping people understand hormone disorders through these books.

Great Book.......2007-01-03
This book arrived on time and was exactly as described. It's been fun playing around with making my own fragrances and not having to pay top dollar to smell good (smile). Will purchase from this company again!
Good Basic Text on Perfume.......2006-06-27
Good exposition of history of perfume, basic types, and so on. Good instructions on how to start making your own.
Lets think a little, before rating.......2006-03-18
Some Amazon reviewers seem to miss completely the point of the books they are rating. One example: among the reviews of a book on yoga for (very) fat people, some commentators criticize the author for changing some of the classical positions. If one can work out the correct positions, why is he(she) meddling into, and messing up, the references for less fortunate people?
This book is another case. It clearly states that it is for beginers (and, by the way, never claims to be solely about 'natural' perfumes). A couple of reviewers criticize it for containing a classification of popular commercial perfumes into the categories of scents that is used in the text.
Is it really that difficult to figure out why such a table is useful for someone that is seeing a perfumes classification scheme for the first time? For those that still don't get it: it's because you exemplify each category with a scent that the reader either very probably knows (since he's reading a book on perfumes, chances are he knows the most common commercial ones) or can easily go to a nearby drugstore and try it.
Not only that, but we can all presume that one of the pleasures of learning the basics of perfume-making is when, for the first time, you make a "perfect copy" of commercially successfull product.
This is the sort of explanation that naturaly comes to anyone that approaches a book with a clear, good-natured mind, instead of a vigilante, patroling, obfuscated look.
People who are unable to put themselves into the targeted audience's shoes would do better avoiding the confusion they create with their self-centered opinions.
Good for one who is familiar with synthetics AND naturals.......2006-01-10
I am only writing this as a guide for people who have read the other reviews. I am going to buy this book, as well as some other ones, because I used to make perfume for a major U.S. candle company, and it is maddening to not remember what I used to make!!! I feel that for aromatherapy, natural oils are essential, but there is nothing wrong with synthetics for sachets, candles, and other non-topical applications. If you shine sunlight, or a flashlight through a prism, are the colors any different? Such is the quandry concerning synthetic versus natural. And many people would benefit from knowing the various groups, or families, because everything smells different on different people. I once had access to an out-of-print, French perfume chemical handbook, costing hundreds of dollars, and also, hundreds of handwritten french perfume formulas, made obsolete by modern methods. So I am trying to replace that lost information, and begin to identify the scents in perfumes all over again. There is a nice selection of books available - a good place to start!
Nice, but not quite what I wanted.......2005-07-16
I enjoyed the historical info about perfume, and the detailed explanations of the different perfume categories. The scent quiz was fun, and the listings of popular perfumes and what categories they fit into might come in very handy for gift-buying.
I wasn't thrilled with the recipes included in the book, and that's the real reason I bought it. Scent is highly personal, and I personally have not liked any of the recipes I've tried from this book. Those who are looking for reference material about established perfumes might benefit from this book, but people who are interested in crafting their own perfumes will find better references elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
Simply the BEST pregnancy book!.......2002-10-24
I have bought a number of pregnancy books and looked at many more, and this one is definitely the best. I would say that if it is information you are after, don't bother buying any other book - just get this one. Like other reviewers have said, this one actually provides scientific evidence for the claims it makes, and it is well-written and easy to understand too.
Do you want to know about episiotomy (an incision made in the perineum between the vagina and the anus) and if and when it is a good thing? Here's the place to find out. And what about electronic monitoring of the fetus during labour? Sounds like a good thing, right? That's what our intuitions tell us - but what are the empirical facts about its use? This book gives you the evidence. Do you want to know exactly what is happening inside your body during conception, pregnancy, labour, delivery and breast-feeding? This book gives you the physiological details, not just vague, general descriptions.
Doctors, although well-meaning, are not necessarily being rationally guided by the scientific evidence when they perform episiotomies or c-sections and so on. So, in order to have the best chances of having the kind of birth you want, you have to find out the evidence for yourself - and this book helps you to do that. It is, of course, no replacement for a knowledgeable, helpful, sympathetic midwife or doctor (who can answer very specific questions that you have at 3am!) but it is an excellent supplement to their advice.
For Women Who Need to Know WHY.......1999-11-16
I bought this book after having read all the other more popular pregnancy books, and I found this one to be my favorite. Unlike the others, it includes lots of scientific data and discussion of various studies that answer all the "why" questions I had about pregnancy. Most books tell women to eat right, exercise, and maintain a low-stress lifestyle, but they offer little in the way of explanation of how such choices affect the baby. This book thoroughly explains it all! I'm so thrilled to have found it, I'll recommend it to any pregnant woman I know who is as frustrated as I was to have felt talked-down-to by other, more vague books.
A must-have book for every pregnant woman!.......1999-09-13
When after 6 years of trying I was finally pregnant, I remember the joy of the moment, but also the intense fear of now having to face labor and delivery. This book, like no other, "coached" me during the entire pregnancy, and helped me face labor and delivery without fear. I came to understand fully why my body was doing what it was doing, and I was able to work WITH my body instead of against it. As a result, I was able to have my son without any drugs -- natural childbirth at its best. For any skeptics out there, I always did keep my options open to make use of drugs, should I not be able to cope. No woman's childbirth experience is the same as another's, but understanding what was going on physically helped me deal with it psychologically. For the past 9 years, I have given this book to all my expecting friends. And, I just bought it again for my expecting sister-in-law!
Great book for people who have a biology/science degree.......1999-04-13
This book is extremely detailed in its presentation of material. Everything from medicines to general attitudes of doctors in this and other countries on certain subjects. This book explains c-sections in great medical detail so you have advanced knowledge of the procedure. I have not yet had a child, yet I still recommend this book to anyone who is interested in getting or is pregnant.
Quench your thirst for "prego" knowledge.......1999-03-02
This book is all about information. I never felt this book left out any facts I was looking for. It was the definitive book I got my information from (out of many, many books). It was a valuable resource for both my first AND second pregnancies. It can be a little text heavy at times, I certainly wouldn't recommend sitting down and reading it like a novel. But when taken a topic at a time, this book is one you don't want to be without during your pregnancy.

Stokes as a model.......2007-08-06
Leonard Moore tells the story of the life of Carl B. Stokes in his book CARL B. STOKES AND THE RISE OF POLITICAL POWER. However, the book is much more than the political life of Stokes. There is in a sense a cursory perspective of his life. You don't get a clear view of his personality or his life style. The book is more about urban politics. Moore's essential theme is that Stokes represents the transition of the politics of protest to the politics of political power for blacks. He demonstrates how Stokes, like virtually all blacks who become mayors of large urban areas inherit dying cities created by white flight, deindustrialization and large populations of urban poor. These are tough battles no matter what your race. But in Stoke's election, Moore demonstrates how black voters came together to use their combined power to attempt to change their status.
By showing the intricacies of Cleveland politics, Moore shows how Stokes was never able to take control of City Council and the police departments. Those two obstacles along with several major scandals made life of Carl Stokes as Mayor difficult.
While the majority of the book deals with local politics and are particularly interesting to Cleveland natives, like myself, the conclusion is extremely powerful. In it Moore shows how Stokes essentially set the standard for future black mayors and how many of them had very similar problems. Although Stokes created the 21st District Caucus in an attempt to have a political powerbase outside the Democratic party, the Causus evenually lost its clout when Stokes was no longer in the picture. Moore also shows how neither Stokes or other Black mayors are able to pass on their political power to a chose successor.
An underlying thesis of the book is the maturation of the black voter. As Stokes saw in his many battles, a candidate cannot just rely on his race to draw votes. The black community and the black voter is no longer a single voting block. Just as white voters have varying interest, so do black voters.
There is one additional thing that is important about the life of Carl and also his brother former Congressman Louis Stokes. They grew up in poverty but also learned that they had to work. Both Stokes often tell the story of how they came to live in public housing and how it was the first time that each of them was able to sleep in their own bed. Prior to that the two boys and their mother all slept together. As a result, their mother was able to make a better life for them. It shows how they, like millions of other veterans, used the GI Bill to go to college and law school. In many respects, the Stokes brothers represent a part of the American dream. They used federal programs to better themselves. Their father died when they were young but they did not use the fact that they grew up without a father hold them back. They used what was available to them and make a better life for themselves and a better life for millions of American.
Individual chapters address a range of issues.......2002-09-14
Carl B. Stokes And The Rise Of Black Political Power by Leonard N. Moore (Assistant Professor of History and Director of the African and African American Studies Program, Louisiana State University) is a meticulous portrayal of Mayor Carl Stokes of Cleveland and the impact his tenure has had on local and national African-American politics. Individual chapters address a range of issues such as "the making of a mayor"; black capitalism; internal political power struggles; and much, much more. A well-researched and scholarly examination of executive government in microcosm in general, and its reflections in the broader scope of African-American politics in particular, Carl B. Stokes And The Rise Of Black Political Power is a welcome and highly recommended addition to academic Black Studies and Political Science reference collections and reading lists.
