Book Description

A humorous and candid view of naval life from 1793 to 1814.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An interesting historical account.......2000-05-14

This is a real life account of service in the Royal Navy from 1793-1814. It provides some insight into naval service of that era from the standpoint of an officer. It has some failings in that it does not identify the time from year to year, and sometimes leaves the reader wondering exactly where the action is taking place. It also reflects the biases of the writer who comes across as a little self-centered and concerned with his own personal comforts. It is a little hard to sympathize with the writer's complaint about being retired as a commander on half-pay, as that was probably about five times the earnings of an ordinary working person and, as he relates in the book, he tended to squander money when he had it. He also dawdled about Paris for about 3 months after being released from captivity rather than reporting back to the Admiralty. Overall, the book is worth reading if one wants to gain some insight into the realities of naval service, where disease and accidents were often more life threatening than the enemy.

                Book Description

Breast cancer has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Once a relatively rare disease, it now affects 2 to 3 million women, and the incidence is going up at an alarming rate. What can we do about it? Christine Horner, M.D., has the prescription: Take healthy organic foods, add a good dose of certain supplements, get the rest and exercise we need, and avoid those things that are bad for our bodies. We each have a Warrior Goddess in us, and it's time to set her free. A pioneer who pushed through federal and state legislation ensuring that breast reconstruction after a mastectomy would be paid for by insurance companies, Dr. Horner lost her own mother to breast cancer. She decided then that her mother's death would not be in vain. Something good would come from it. This legislation was her first gift to her mother's memory, and this book is another. Useing the metaphor of the Warrior Goddess, this book explains something that Ayurveda describes as our "inner healing intelligence." It also explores the various foods and supplements that can enable women to successfully fight breast cancer and claim the healthy body that should be theirs. Dr. Horner tells readers what to avoid and what to embrace, what will poison the Warrior Goddess and what will feed her and what she needs to thrive.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Warrior tells it how it is.......2007-09-19

It's refreshing to see a book from a medical doctor (a surgeon) that gives practical and natural suggestions for protecting yourself from breast cancer. Most conventional doctors limit their advice to what drugs might be prescribed and what to expect during chemotherapy. This book was packed with lots of truly natural alternatives. Way to go Christine!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for every woman!.......2006-11-12

Waking the Warrior Goddess was recommended to me and I now know why. The information provided is valuable for every woman to know and have as a reference to prevent & protect your body from the dreaded breat cancer that is a great fear for us all. Dr. Horner writes in a very compreshensve manner and with much passion for the cause. I plan to purchase additional copies to share with the women in my life.

2 out of 5 stars Soy NOT a Safe Way to Prevent Breast Cancer .......2006-09-04

Awaken the Warrior Goddess! What a powerful and positive message for today's women. Unhappily, Dr. Horner enters the fray with the dangerous advice that women protect themselves from breast cancer by increasing their consumption of soy. In fact, the evidence that soy prevents breast cancer is inconsistent and contradictory at best, with numerous studies showing soy can cause, contribute to or accelerate the growth of cancer, particularly breast cancer. I am not alone in this concern. The Israeli Health Ministry has warned that babies should not receive soy formula, that children to age 18 should consume soy foods or soy milk no more than once per day to a maximum of 3 times per week and that adults should exercise caution because of adverse effects on fertility and increased breast cancer risk. The French Food Agency is now implementing regulations that will require warning labels on soy foods advising consumers of risks to women who have been diagnosed with or have a family history of breast cancer. Cornell University has also warned women at risk for breast cancer to take it easy on soy. Finally, soy contributes to numerous other health problems such as hypothyroidism, infertility and cognitive decline. Awake warriors need to know that POSSIBLE benefits are outweighed by PROVEN risks and a good policy is "better safe than sorry."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent health tips!.......2005-10-10

This book provides a variety of tips for healthy living, especially related to the prevention or recurrance of breast cancer. Just incorporating a few of them into your lifestyle would be a positive change. I recommend this to all women.

4 out of 5 stars An essential resource for all women and men too.......2005-10-05

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and I read this book in the last week of September. So, this is the right time to share my views about this book with you. It also happens that this is the season for worshipping the Goddess Durga to whom the author refers to in the book.

Breast Cancer is one of the more prevalent forms of cancer that is affecting a number of women all over the world. From time immemorial, breasts have been associated with femininity and thus any disfiguration (caused by chemotherapy, radiation and mastectomy) is emotionally traumatic to many women.

Dr.Christine Horner, a Board Certified plastic surgeon has personal experience of seeing the suffering since her mother was affected. In this excellent book, Dr.Horner shares the latest research on the factors that increase the risk of developing breast cancer and the best ways of fighting those risk factors. She combines life style changes and Ayurveda for an effective fight against a deadly, disfiguring and emotionally devastating disease. In fact, her recommendations will most probably protect against other disorders like other cancers and aging too.

The book is spread over 28 Chapters and is followed by the author's 30-step program, and Dr.Horner hastens to assure the reader that they are really not steps and thus there is no sequence. They are life style change suggestions and if really implemented become customs.

The book is highly readable. However, there are a few problems with units of measurement. For example, on Page 74, ppt is defined as parts per thousand and then an absurd figure is given for the concentration of PCBs in waters of the Great Lakes. 1000 ppt becomes 1 or 100%. So, there cannot be a higher value like 17,000,000 ppt. Similarly, a microgram is one millionth of a gram and is one tenth of a milli-centigram. A millicentigram, mcg is one over one hundred thousand.

There are a couple of statistical errors and there are a few slips in text editing too but in general, there is no problem in understanding the subject. In any case, taking of any herbal or mineral supplements etc., is best done with the full knowledge and guidance of the primary health professional and thus the dosage etc., will be taken care of.

These minor deficiencies, I repeat, do not in any way reduce the value of the information given by Dr.Horner in this excellent book.

The publisher's disclaimer of not endorsing any specific product including the product promoted by the author is very apt and the same disclaimer applies to this review and reviewer too. The reviewer doesn't endorse the specific brand of Ayurveda or Meditation that the author recommends. That doesn't reduce the value of the information given in the book.

The book will be found useful not only for US readers but for all women and for that matter all people since men are also adversely affected when their mothers, sisters, wives, lovers and daughters are affected by this disease.

Some Hindu readers of this book in USA or other countries may get offended by the author naming her pet cat, Sita, who is the incarnation of the Divine Mother in Ramayana, the great Indian story of the victory of Rama, the embodiment of virtue over Ravana, representing the demoniacal forces of lust and arrogance. The author could probably rechristen her pet with a culturally proper name.

I really enjoyed reading this book and strongly recommend any one with even a slight interest in cancer in general and breast cancer in particular to read this book.

Definitely a must have for the busy family as you can prepare the meal before work and have a hot meal waiting for you at home. Using a crock pot slow cooker is especially nice during the summer months so you can still have a good meal without having to heat up the whole house with an oven. So this book gives you a nice selection of meals to try and choose from. This book is definitely a family favorite.

i bought this book bc i dont know how to cook and i never have any ideas. it is neat, but doesnt have the healthiest ingredients. there's a lot of processed food ingredients. its quick, but not the healthiest. also uses ingredients like "fryer chicken" and i have no idea what a fryer chicken is. this is a good cook book, i'd recommend it, but it could use more fresh ingredients.

5 out of 5 stars Great for those who are newly espoused.............2006-02-18

I bought this book at a Cracker Barrell store and couldn't wait to get home to try it out. The recipes are so easy, and they don't call for outlandish ingredients and spices that noone ever has! After only two weeks, I had prepared over ten recipes from the cookbook.

I recently gave this as a gift to a young newlywed co-worker. Once I heard she was feeding her husband Hamburger Helper every night, I knew I had to give her this particular book to get her on her way to being the next great cook! With recipes only having 3-4 ingredients, it makes it easy to personalize the dishes by adding your own flavor...OR she could get her sweetie in the kitchen to help come up with their own masterpiece meals!!!

This is my very favorite cookbook to share with my "tween" daughter, too! Nothing is too difficult for even an 11-12 year-old to handle! I love it!

This book is not just for women but for men too. With over 500 recipes you can find lots to like. The recipes use simple, easy to find ingredients. A great cookbook for beginning cooks, college students, busy people, and those physically unable to spend time in the kitchen. Soups, side dishes, meats, cakes, pies, cookies, appetizers. Also, the side notes about remarkable women make great reading.

4 out of 5 stars Quick meals, less time, less ingredients.......2002-08-29

I commute 3 hours a day, and this book will give you quick hits for meal time. You should be able to find a recipe at the end of your workday, made with everyday household ingredients, that taste good and don't take much time to cook.

My favorite recipe was the Pretzel Baked Chicken and the kids enjoyed the Lazy Day Potato soup the best.

You should buy this book if you:
-hate to spend a lot of time in the kitchen
                -like simple fast recipes
-want something that tastes good made in less time

                Enjoy!!! Bon Appetit

5 out of 5 stars They really work!.......2001-12-06

The recipes with only 3 and 4 ingredients are wonderful for the cooking-challenged like me. And here's the best part. The stuff actually tastes good! My husband and son have never been too crazy about my meatloaf, but I made this one (the secret ingredient is catsup in the meat and as a sauce), and they went back for more. Walk--no, run and get this one today. Tell all your friends. I have made the Licking Good Spareribs, Old Time Meat Loaf, Over Noodles Beef Stew, and Chicken Fried Steak.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-10-10

I highly recommend this book for all levels of hand quilters. Lots of great tips along with graphic examples. I have other books but this is the one that I turn to most often for information.

5 out of 5 stars I really liked this book.......2005-09-26

This book has some really great pictures and explainations to help with all aspects of getting a quilt top quilted and choosing the supplies to do it with. If you haven't actually seen someone do a quilt stitch, a book is not going to be able to show you how, but it's better than nothing. I have seen someone quilt, but not much. At least now I have a good quide and have been able to experiment with what I have read and seen in this book. I am glad I bought this book.

                                    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-09-10

                                    A MUST FOR QUILTERS.......

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2003-10-24

This is an excellent book, with photos and tips on every page. There are sections on thimbles, markers, batting, frames, and hoops. Skill sections provide detailed instructions along with the photos for basting, starting, stopping, and sliding your stitch. Additional sections discuss trapunto, stippling, country style quilting, and tying. Exercises and practice ideas are provided to learn the techniques presented.

The best chapter explains that anxiety producing phrase, "quilt as desired"! I also really appreciated the photos of beginner, intermediate and prize-winning quilting. It made me feel better about what I can do now and gave me a goal to work toward.

I found this book to be an excellent resource! The instructions are easy to follow, yet detailed and the many photos are very helpful. It's like having a quilting teacher at home with you all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Informative.......2003-03-25

This book is all about handquilting, and gives great information on the entire process from choosing batting, threads, thimbles, and basting methods, and includes color photos for each step explained. Handquilting is time consuming, but is by no means hard to learn. This book will provide beginners with all the information they need, and is an excellent volume to own for reference.

Many gardens in the region were first cultivated by early Quakers and include historic, restored homes dating to the early 1700s. The CD gives parent employers the ability to print forms in the amount needed when needed. The online appendix... parent employers to download IRS and INS forms twenty four hours a day. A comprehensive needs assessment questionnaire helps you determine your needs regardless of the age, stage or phase of your children. Interview techniques and tips for the interview, and reference checking procedures establish criteria that parallels a nanny hire to a private sector hire. Employment based on the principles of the ABCs of Hiring a Nanny--expanded version bolsters the credibility of the nanny profession and takes the fear out of the hiring process.

1 out of 5 stars CD was unusable.......2006-08-15

This book is an outline with a bunch of forms. It would have been useful for the forms on cd, except the cd was unusable. The cd is in an envelope glued which is glued in to the back cover. Unfortunately too much glue was used and it soaked through the envelope to the CD. I didn't try the cd until I needed forms, I ended up paying for a different set of forms online and I am stuck with the book because it's been too long to return it!

Don't make my mistake, you can get better forms online and a more useful book is "The Nanny Book: The Smart Parent's Guide to Hiring, Firing, and Every Sticky Situation in Between"

5 out of 5 stars comprehensive hiring book on market for 8 years.......2006-04-17

The two critical reviews are somewhat surprising since the book has been on the market so long, and recommended by the American Red Cross, The International Nanny Association, and a Park Avenue Pediatrican. It is on the employee reading list at NOAA. The American Bar Association recommeded the book for young lawyers. Articles in newspapers from Los Angeles to DC list the book.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2006-04-08

Bought this book hoping for a comprehensive resource of information on hiring a nanny. Boy were we disappointed. As was mentioned in another post - the book is nothing more than a glorified outline, and half of the book is copies of the forms that are on the disk, which forms by the way are in .pdf form and are not even fillable.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like an outline.......2006-01-10

This "book" seems more like an outline for a book. Quick, terse and not very complete or thoughtful. While I'm all for informational books being "to the point" and not fluffy, this book really seems like it was never actually completed, and so has not proved very useful to me.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good gift for a new working mother.......2004-03-20

We bought this book four years ago and are pleased that it is still a top match on amazon.com. The forms disk is really a big help to parents and we have seen this book mentioned in major magazines. Also this nanny book is on the NOAA employees reading list and that is a good recommendation. We just bougt the author's second book, The ABC's of Credit and it is a great little book also. The fact that there are several nanny related businesses that link from this listing speaks well for the author. I noticed visiting agency webpages that many agencies now require the TB test before accepting an applicant for placement. This was unheard of until Hernan pushed hard on the issue.

                                        Book Description

Max Beerbohm was widely celebrated as the wittiest mind of his age. And it was a very long age indeed: he became famous in the mid-1890s and remained so until his death in 1956. His wit manifested itself in both prose and caricature, and his writings and drawings are keenly interesting. Max's life, however, was relatively uneventful, and of interest, he said, only to himself. This biography of Beerbohm, the first in forty years, enlivens his story by quoting him whenever possible, and the result-thanks to Max himself-is a scintillating and entertaining book.

John Hall moves quickly through Max's history: schoolboy; college undergraduate; London caricaturist, journalist, and critic; Edwardian social butterfly; married man and self-exile to Italy in 1910, where he produced numerous books, essays, and caricatures; and, from 1935 to 1956, occasional BBC radio broadcaster. Hall notes that although all Max's work during his fifteen early years on the London scene concerned contemporary art and life, after his "retirement" in 1910 his writings and drawings harkened back to the late-Victorian/Edwardian era and even to the Pre-Raphaelites; he became, he said, an "interesting link with the past."

This book, like Beerbohm's work, highlights his connection with various eminences over three eras: Algernon Swinburne, J.A.M. Whistler, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, George Bernard Shaw, Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf, and many others. Written in an idiosyncratic, opinionated, lively, quirky style, it is just the kind of biography of which Max might have (for the most part) approved.
