Absorbing, true life stories on World War II.......1999-10-26

My Grandfather,Dr.William V.McDermott,has told me much about his experiences on the Omaha Beach and the terrifying seens in Ebensee. His pictures of the concentration camps help a 13 year old girl like me really understand some of the real meaning of war,although,nobody could ever know what its really like....unless they were actually there. I enjoy listening to his engrossing stories and this book was just a whole new one to catch my breath and fufill my thirst for history and information.

Saving Lives and Winning the War.......1998-10-15

Fifty years after WWII, it is rare and unusual treat to read a firsthand account of the Allied advance through Hitler's Fortress Europe from D-Day to VE Day. Dr. McDermott's account is based partly from memory, but mostly from the hundreds of letters he wrote his wife during the course of the campaign. A half-century later, Dr. McDermott thought to throw the dusty cardboard box of correspondence away, but fortunately for us, his daughter convinced him otherwise, and he decided to take the letters and write this book about his extrordinary experiences.

In the 1990's, our collective memories of WWII are shaped by Steven Ambrose and "Saving Private Ryan." This book rounds out these accounts with another, more thoughtful side of the GI's experience. There are accounts of shelling and blood, but the book focuses on how simple acts of kindness or simple pleasures of normal life -- a French peasant giving a US soldier some apples, or a beautiful sunset over Caen in June 1944 -- assume such poignant meaning and enlarged proportion.

Dr. McDermott was one of the first doctors at the scene when the Nazi concentration camps were liberated. His account of the suffering is mournful and harrowing. Throughout the book he talks about Nazi brutality, but it isn't until the final chapters that he sees firsthand to what depths that brutality would sink.

For anyone interested in WWII, European History or the Holocaust, I would highly recommend this book.

My Grandfather wrote this book and personally I loved it! He has told me about his expierences freeing the concentration camp. I give it a ten, not just because I know him but because I thought it was well put together and I reccomend it to everyone.Even if you can't stand the thought of concentration camps or war it describes to you what really happened as if you were really there. Inspiring pictures of societies in England, France, Germany and Austria in the 40's.Analysis with such a high sensibility and far reaching perspective that they seem written in the 90's. A conscious soldier and doctor at war with honor. Humor instead of truculence proves to be effective to make read and feel. Humorous at difficulties of a sophisticated mind within the hardships of war-field life. Humorous at the many fake sons of Victory, like France or Austria, which lived the following 50 years on the myths of all having been in the Resistance to the Nazis, when actually 30 to 40% of every State in Europe had embraced rightist to fascist ideas. A must for anyone interested in euro-american history, sociology, and collective psychology.

A small but illuminating work on Raymond Lully and how deeply misunderstood he was by so many and how finally at last, his accomplishments and works are being recognized for their true worth in the movement towards higher truth.

An Original Idea, but..........2003-06-11

This is a good book. It provides a good review of Lully's life. However, it does not do much to explore the alchemical aspect of Lully's writing. Honestly, the reader is left with knowing about many of the legends about Raymund Lully, but still very little about the real man, or why it is that so many works were attributed to him after his 'death'. So if you want to know a little more about Lully, then I recommend this work. But if you want to know more about what Lully actually wrote, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Zoned Out.......2007-05-07

I had read the first book on the relaxation response, but it just didn't "do it" for me. It taught me the basics but I already knew the basics. If you don't know the basics you really should read it first.
This book was awesome. I have so deepened my meditation. He encourages you to tap into your own belief system and that made such a tremendous difference in my meditation experience.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanted to learn the art of meditation.

Groundbreaking.......2006-12-02

Quite simply Herbert Benson, through the Relaxation Response and Beyond the Relaxation Response, put meditation on the map for the medical profession and for interested laymen who weren't adepts of some guru, yogi, maharishi or other spiritual master. This he did by providing an easy to follow, non-religious based program for eliciting a meditative state AND by validating the results through science. Yes, the book is a little dated now. But, if the content seems familliar, it's beacause there are so many imitators.

If you liked these books, you may also benefit from John Kabbat-Zinn's "Full Catastrophe Living" .

Save your time and your money!!!.......2006-01-19

I have read natural, alternative, holistic books for many years now, most I have recently purchased through Amazon. I rely on the reviews of others to a great extent so when I received this book and was beyond disappointed with its contents I felt annoyed enough to respond with a review of my own to prevent anyone else from this waste of time and money. I am studying to be a relaxation therapist and taking spiritual counseling courses at the same time and both this book and its predecessor, The Relaxation Response, were included on the book list for these courses, so I was really expecting them to provide new, exciting, helpful information, maybe expecting them to make some heretofore unmade connections for me? The two elements I guess worth pulling out of this book are 1) It provides a relaxation method, however, even this is not new nor particularly advanced? and 2) It introduces the addition of one's belief as being an element which intensifies the method?....well...duh...The only way that I even allow for these points is sheer kindness and not real honesty about the value found in the book as there is none! Granted the publishing of this book is a little dated but even for 1984 this information was really lame and old. I cannot fathom why these books are still being added to reading list which include books that far surpass the information found here? No personal offense to Dr. Benson but the book reads like sitting in the company of one who has been isolated for a long period of time and in desperate need of company so they bore their guests to tears and won't be quiet. It goes on and on and on with no real substance at all....

Straight Forward and Sensible.......2004-12-21

A good, simple read that's also entertaining. The book discusses the possible effects of adding faith to the relaxation response. It would appear that the original 'relaxation response', while good, has an even more profound impact if coupled with a persons personal belief system.

In brief: a good, useful book with easily accessible information.

Fascinating as well as Practical.......2002-10-31

Originally I read this book as a text that I chose as part of a book review assignment I had for a psychology class I was in. For some reason this book really grabbed my interest right away since he was writing about something I knew very little about.

The author describes various accounts of myths and stories of some of the amazing feats that Asian Buddhists have acheived in the past. They do things such as leaping (almost flying) great distances upon rocks, and also being able to increase their body temperatures during meditation. It's said that pious monks can be tested by wearing garments that were drenched in ice cold water, and within a short matter of time the garments would be completely dry. He decided to research these things first hand by performing experiments on their meditation techneques. He even provides the actual experimental results and conclusions from all of the various temperature readings he performed. It's interesting to hear about his interactions and impressions on the Dali Lama as well.

For a more practical usage, this book is great for anyone who wants to learn some realistic and effective step-by-step relaxation and meditation techneques.

Overall, his research is very well organized and stated enthusiastically in an informative manner. This book is valuable in terms of the cultural analysis, the scientific evidence, the psychological studies made, and the practical exercises described within.

This is exaclty what you would expect frm a klutz book. Easy to follow concise instructions. Easy instructions and easy to do are not the same thing, this is a very time consuming activity. It takes a bit to get the hang of it and then a good little bit of time to do the entire wrap. Granted my girls have very, very long hair. If the idea looks fun to you then you will like the book.

A capable reference, without the gloss you might want.......2000-08-14

Native Plants for Northern Gardens is a basic reference title compiled from notes taken by Leon Snyder, longtime head of the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, before his death. The book lacks the polish you might see in comparable hardcover gardening titles. Its pictures are more those of an academic reference rather than a loving gardening book. I hate to say it, but it's less inspiring for that absence.

I would recommend this title as a reference for anyone in the upper midwest who's already into gardening with natives. For people considering native plants for the first time, there are some other nicer presentations that'll get you more worked up. (C. Colston Burrell's book on my review page, for example.) You might come around to needing this one, but it's not the one to get you started.

Great parenting book.......2007-06-27

This is such a great book. If everyone would parent the way that was taught in this book the world would be such a great place. The things that Dr. Latham teaches are amazing and they work like magic with my five children!!! I would highly recomment this book

Positive Reinforcement Quick Reference.......2007-03-04

Having studied with Glenn Latham in person, and read other of his books, this book was mostly a summary of his other lengthier books. Its value lies precisely in its conciseness. For me it acts as a quick reference into positive reinforcement.

Raising children is a challenging task, probably the most challenging I've ever encountered. It is daunting to think of the consequences of how you raise your children. It is also extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

This book will help in raising children with love, giving you extra knowledge to understand why they react the way they do, how you may be contributing to bad behavior by reinforcing it (perhaps unknowingly), and why and how to reinforce good behavior instead.

If you're new to positive reinforcement, I would start with one of the other Latham books, such as The Power of Positive Parenting. Highly recommended.

Great parenting book.......2007-01-03

this is a great resource to help (slightly imperfect) parents change parenting methods, to go from instinctual parenting ("this is how I was raised") to a model of how could I best raise my children. I'd been looking for a book to give me practical examples of how to discipline (train) my children in a calm, loving manner that would also be taken seriously. This book was it. I found it extremely useful.

A timely and convincing re-evaluation of an unfairly reviled Victorian master. Barringer and Prettejohn demonstrate that Leighton has borne the brunt of Modernist abuse for far too long. The full extent of his achievement is brought out in this comprehensive and powerful collection of essays, which show that 'Flaming June' and his other works are much more than merely charming. I particularly liked Prettejohn's elegant account of his four major narrative pictures. Now at last critics can write about Victorian art openly, fairly and with insight. Leighton emerges as a masterly and subtle artist - not before time.
