A Must Read.......2004-10-17
So many people today do not fully understad the sacrafice and the struggle our parents and grandparents endured for the sake of freedom. We take it all for granted. Abandoned on Bataan tells of a small town Texas boys view of a horrible war. The will to survive and their struggles are an inspiration. The horrible acts of their captors should never be forgotten. Our unwillingness to get involved in the beginning, our thoughts that it's not our problem, should be a reminder. We must never forget the past, or those brave men and women who sacraficed all.
A Moving Account.......2003-11-21
In today's world, war is something of a video game. We watch it on the television, in the movies, and even pretend to stage our own battles over the internet. Modern day combat as seen in the Middle East proves this even more. With high tech equipment and more resources, we have left ourselves at somewhat of a disadvantage psychologically from past wars. As Americans, many of us have become weak to the thought of paying the ultimate price for freedom. In Oliver `Red' Allen's book, Abandoned on Bataan, we read his memoirs of survival as a prisoner-of-war under Japanese control. Allen tells the story of his own personal tragedy along with the stories of other Americans stuck in "hell." The battle cry of the Bataan prisoners-of-war says it all:
"We're the battling bastards of Bataan,
No mama, no papa, no Uncle Sam,
No aunts, no uncles, no nephews, no nieces,
No pills, no planes, no artillery pieces.
...And nobody gives a damn!"
Allen does not attempt to put together a bashing attack towards the Japanese, nor does he give the history of Bataan or World War II. He simply gives the reader a summary of one man's experience as a prisoner-of-war during the Bataan Death March and subsequent captivity. His vivid descriptions of the march along with daily accounts allow the harsh realities of war to be felt by anyone who reads his words.
Allen gives an extensively detailed account of life as a POW under Japanese control. His depictions of daily life spent in Japanese custody are absolutely bone chilling. Some passages left me almost weeping with emotions that I thought were reserved for personal tragedies. One particular incident in the book concerned Allen's appearance before a senior Japanese officer. He was in trouble and had to stand at attention until he was excused; this treatment went on for hours. Already undernourished and overworked, Allen's body was on the verge of shutting down. After several hours, he was told to leave and go back to work. The Japanese officer left but later sent an interpreter back to find Allen still standing at attention. The young American prisoner was so numb with pain he could not move and had to remain in that position until pushed over by the guard. Even though atrocities like this occurred to the author, he still seemed to stay level-headed. Never during my reading did he seem to show hatred towards his captors, which is incredible given the conditions he had to endure.
I consider Abandoned on Bataan one of the best books I have ever read about this era. After reading the book, persons come away with a greater appreciation of our life today and the freedoms we enjoy. Allen's positive attitude, even in the worst of situations, stands as a shining example for all. I would recommend this book without any reservation for those who want to know more about this painful episode from America's past.
First person account of a WWII POW captured on Bataan.......2003-04-21
"Abandoned on Bataan" is the detailed memoirs of Oliver Allen, one of may American soldiers left behind on the Bataan peninsula during World War II. Most people with even a basic knowledge of the history of the war in the Pacific know of the Bataan death march and the condition of the people when they were rescued from camps in China and Japan. What we generally don't know much about is what happened between those events. Oliver Allen's story fills in that detail with his personal experiences. He details the treatment received (including the rare instances of kindness shown by individual soldiers), the daily life in the camp, the work details, the health conditions, and the eventual liberation. It is a story of strength in the darkest hours of human travesty, it is a story of surviving, and it is a story of winning against all odds. For those with an interest in history and in particular an interest in Bataan or the war in the Pacific in general it is a highly recommended read.
Lest we forget the horror that is war........2003-03-09
Lest we forget the horror that is war.
Standing, as we are, on the cusp of what historians will call the Second Gulf War, the world is confronted once again with the terrors and brutality that warfare stirs in the human psyche. Each of our living generations carries distinct and vivid imagery of what those horrors are. The further back in time our collective memories stretch, the more brutal warfare becomes. Tragically, as our technology has advanced, our ability to wage a lightning war -- an antiseptic Blitzkrieg if you will -- has become so profound that the youngest of our generations have forgotten, or never learned, just how terrible war can be. In a world where our most recent conflicts have seen more friendly fire casualties than deaths attributable to combat, to be captured, tortured, and deprived of basic human necessities is now something of an anachronism to Americans in the 21st century.
To counter our fading memories, Oliver Craig Allen, with the help of his wife Mildred Faye Allen, has given us one man's perspective of the grim realities faced by thousands of American prisoners of war during World War II ' many of whom never returned home alive. The Allen's do not attempt to tell the sweeping and rich history of American combat in the Pacific during the war, nor have they put together a comprehensive history of Bataan, the Death March or even of the unit in which Red Allen served. Rather, this is a story of survival in the face of almost unimaginable brutality at the hands of Japanese captors. Throughout the story, the reader is met head-on with Allen's completely honest assessment of himself, not as a hero or otherwise notable figure but as a simple young man who ended up in a terrible situation from which there was little hope of escape. Allen's gritty determination and tenacious will to survive is perhaps the most salient feature in this work which traces Red Allen from the years prior to his enlistment through his freedom from captivity and to his return to life as a civilian deeply affected by his experiences in combat and captivity.
Among the many prominent facets of this work is Allen's depiction of the ever-present fog of confusion and chaos that surrounded the battle for the Philippines and life as a captive of the Japanese. This story does an exceptional job in painting a clear picture of the fall of the Philippines and the abandonment of our armed forces thereafter. As a stand-alone memoir, Abandoned on Bataan is a good read about a terrible time. It is also valuable as a component in the larger story of the hell that was life as a prisoner of war under a Japanese captor with only the vaguest regard for individual dignity and human life.
A modest astonishing memoir!.......2003-03-04
One man's story of survival, as told to Mildred Allen. A teenage American GI recounts his years (1941-1945) of starvation, torture & germ warfare as a prisoner of war of the Japanese Empire in the Philippines & Manchuria.
ABANDONED ON BATAAN isn't about great generals or mighty battles, it is much, much more important, for it is about the survival of human dignity, compassion & hope against all odds. Yes, Red Allen ponders on the differences between cultures. Yes, his perspective of his captors is all-American, his point-of-view, however, is both prosaic & honest.
Yearning to become a pilot, teenager Oliver Allen answers the call to duty as the storms of war rumble over Europe & China. Unable to attain his dream of flying planes, he enlists anyway & is immediately shipped to the West Coast, on to Hawaii & then across the Pacific to the Philippine Islands into the maw of the Japanese advance.
That Red Allen survives is due as much to the simplicity & hardscrabble of his Texas childhood during the Great Depression as to the ebullience of his youth, not to mention pure damn luck!
Embedded in this memoir is history as well as a mystery. What were the reasons the world went to war in Europe & in Asia, & what were the feathers the POWs found in their Red Cross packages & parcels from home?
ABANDONED ON BATAAN is an astonishing read. Profoundly modest, detailed & authentic. Time & time again, this prototypical survivor has the opportunity to dwell on self-pity & whine about horrific injustices visited upon him & his fellow POWs, however, he rarely does so, to his credit. It's the story that counts & the Allens have written a riveting memoir.

If You Are Searching For Serenity.......2000-05-01
Jennifer L. Tinsman's book is without a doubt the most powerfulbook I have ever read. At this point in time I have already read ittwice and I still am finding answers to my questions that I missed the first time I read it. She speaks from her heart but, more importantly, when she speaks the reader feels as though THEY are the author and have walked in her shoes (or wish that they could!). She brings the message of peace and joy and the love of God that we all so desperately need in our lives. She answers many of the questions we have all asked at one time or another in our lives. This book brought me many tears of joy and sadness as well. This book also has helped someone that I love dearly and is in pain. This book helped her to find,at last, someone who understands and feels as the author does about the power of God in our daily lives and in our healing processes. Healing both in the physical and spirtual sense! I would recommend this book for anyone from any walk of life, any spiritual path, any need at all. She covers everything that you could ever want to know- and them some. I personally would like to thank the author, Jennifer Tinsman for sharing her story with us, the readers, that we may heal along with her. That we may learn along with her. She will bless you life, I assure you! PS I also bought this book as a gift for my sister and my father who fell in love with as well.
Are you are searching for answers?.......2000-03-29
Jennifer Tinsman's book is the most powerful book that I have read in many years. There could not possibly be any one human being that could not put themselves in her place and find for themselves all of the answers that they have searched a lifetime for. This book brought me tears and joy. It made me reclaim the true essence of my love of God. This book is for anyone who is searching for answers, who feels fear, pain, overcoming overwheming odds, tests from God. So many life issues are answered here in this book. I can truly say that this book brought a light into my life and the into the life of another whom I dearly love. She has touched us deeply. You CANNOT miss out on reading this book. It will uplift and encourage you to the depths of your soul. God bless you Jennifer for your gift to us-the readers.
Wise and Intelligent.......1999-11-25
Jennifer Tinsman doesn't profess to be anybody's "guru" or even teacher. What she IS is a human being of wisdom, intelligence, and heart. She is one of us...and the path she has walked is inspirational.
A look at one person's journey to spiritual wholeness........1999-11-22
Jennifer Tinsman's book provides clear and often painful insight into the problems many of us face in trying to determine who we are and what we should be doing in life. She offers, through insight into her own struggles, specific actions that we can follow to work through our own challenges and realize our dreams. Her writing is smooth and flowing, and provides an excellent and potentially life-changing read!
Uplifting and Inspirational.......1999-11-22
I found Jennifer's book touching home in events concerning my own inner awareness. I have attended Jennifer's seminar and wish that I had more opportunity to spend time with her and learn how to get in touch with my inner self. Her book is uplifting and inspirational. It makes you aware of the true meaning of life.
Book Description
Perhaps heartbreaking is the wrong word for a very happy event, one that brings tears to your eyes because you know what the alternative would have been. But however you describe it, the letters that Don Gazzaniga finds on his web site ever since his first cookbook was published easily bring tears to the reader's eyes. "The doctor told him that the very low-sodium diet is the main thing responsible for this success and I couldn't wait to share it with you." "When I said that your book saved [my husband's] life, I meant it." That first cookbook was a surprise to medical professionals and their patients alike. Doctors have always believed that no one could ever get below 1500 milligrams of sodium a daily diet. "Keep it at that level," Don's doctor told the sixty-three-year-old Gazzaniga in 1997. He had diagnosed his patient's problem as congestive heart failure and was about to sign him up for the only solution believed possible, a heart transplant. To Don, this was a challenge. After a lot of research, the help of nutritionist daughter, Jeannie, familiarity with the cuisines of many different countries, and hours in the kitchen, Don came up with a large selection of recipes and a twenty-eight-day menu that never went above five hundred milligrams of sodium a day! Yep! That's five hundred. And the food was delicious. The recipes in that first diet were gathered in a general cookbook that told readers just about everything they needed to know: where to find the right ingredients, how to make tasty substitutions that did not raise the sodium level, and more, with the sodium count given for each ingredient and each recipe. That was The No-Salt, Lowest-Sodium Cookbook. Don decided to embellish the general work with some specialties and, with his wife, Maureen, created The No-Salt, Lowest-Sodium Baking Book. If anyone thinks that you can't make delicious bread and pies and cookies and other baked goodies with very little or no sodium, try a few of Don's recipes. i0But suppose you want to celebrate your grandson's third birthday, or your doctor's latest green light, with a party and need delicious tidbits for the guests. Here they are in their new book. Sometimes you feel like a light lunch---a salad, a sandwich, a bowl of soup. Here they are. There are sections explaining where to buy special flavorings and the like, how to substitute low-sodium or sodium-free ingredients, and a foreword by Dr. Michael Fowler, director of the Stanford Heart Transplant Program and medical director of the Stanford Cardiomyopathy Center.

Wonderful Life Saver!.......2007-02-24
Excellent, tasty recipes and great tips and information for those needing a no salt or lowest sodium alternative to regular recipes. My husband was diagnosed with Meneire's disease and needs to stay around 300 mg or less of sodium a day. I was having a difficult time finding recipes to suit this need until I found Don Gazzaniga's books and website. The soups and salads in this particular cookbook are even easy enough for my husband (a non cook) to handle.
Salt is the Cause; Not the Solution.......2006-07-27
There's an old Texan story about a Texican who goes into a general store that is having a closing sale. He sees that a whole wall of the store is stacked with nothing but buffalo pucky and salt: bags of buffalo pucky and bags of salt, blocks of buffalo pucky and blocks of salt, shakers of buffalo pucky and shakers of salt. Just buffalo pucky and salt from floor to ceiling (everything's big in Texas). So he says to the store clerk, "Dude, you sure sell a lot of buffalo pucky and salt!" The store clerk replies, "I wish that were the case. The only one selling a lot of buffalo pucky and salt is the salesman that talked me into buying all this."
Like the storekeeper, two things that Americans consume far too much of are buffalo pucky and salt - nearly as much as is consumed by the British [...] Thanks to processed foods, Americans consume 20 to 30 times their recommended daily allowance of salt. And thanks to Bush, Blair, and their friends in the corporatist media who feed a steady diet of buffalo pucky to gullible Americans - greasy morsels such as: the Iraqi people want us in Iraq and the Afghans want us in Afghanistan; that we are rebuilding their countries; that we are helping the Iraqi and Afghan peoples; that the new Iraqi government is a democracy and former Soviet drug lord Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan is not a dictator; and the list goes on and on - 80,000 gullible kids join the U.S. military each year and many end up in Afghanistan, Iraq, injured or in a body bag. Both buffalo pucky and salt are detrimental to one's health, financial and otherwise, often giving rise to high blood pressure.
The Gazzaniga family - Donald, Maureen, and Jeannie, do not address the buffalo pucky that serves to camouflage America's slide down the slippery slope to Nazi Germany nor do they address the rapid rise of heart disease by distressed percipient veterans who are in a turmoil over the Hitlerite fascism that has gripped America and is now plaguing the world. Instead they have put together a cookbook full of recipes that tell readers how to skip salt rather than buffalo pucky.
Their book is divided into 8 sections for recipes: Soups, Stocks and Broths, Wild Game Soups, Sandwiches, Sandwich Breads, Salads, Special Salad Dressings, and Spice and Herb Mixes. The recipes sections are followed by a glossary, conversion tables showing the metric units for English measurements (which were banned in England in 1999), a table of ingredients used in this book, and an index.
Most illuminating is a 3 and a half page foreward written by Dr Michael Fowler, Director of Stanford Heart Transplant Program. He says that many people suffering from hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure) are actually suffering from salt poisoning, which in turn contributes to hypertension. For many people, a hormone is doing a Bush-n-Blair to their kidneys, lying and telling the kidneys that the body is dehydrated. If your kidneys believe that you are dehydrated, then they will not release sodium. Sodium then builds up inside you and you begin to feel the effects of salt poisoning. Dr Fowler says "When the heart begins to fail, the kidneys are `signaled' by hormones and nerves to adjust the kidneys to retain sodium, and consequently water. . . the kidney and hormonal systems have incorrectly assumed that the changes detected around the body and especially by the kidneys are the result of the individual being dehydrated" (pp xiii-xiv). Although he doesn't mention having a VQ scan, he does recommend an echo-Doppler examination and a BNP test, "which measures a hormone provided by the failure of the heart that reflects the elevation of pressure caused by salt and secondary fluid retention" (pxiv).
Beginning on page 1 is the section on low-sodium soups. The recipes range from one for apple and cauliflower soup with curry followed by 34 more recipes ending with one for turkey tortilla soup. Section 2 contains 6 stock and broth recipes. Section 3 has 7 wild game soup recipes. Section 4 has 31 scrumpcious sandwich recipes including one for a vegetable calzone. Section 5 contains 19 recipes for no-salt breads, which I can personally testify that light, fluffy bread can be baked without any sodium. Section 6 has 30 salad recipes ranging from Asian chicken salad to Summer cucumber tomato salad. Section 7 has 8 salad dressing recipes. The last section has 12 recipes for spice and herb mixes.
The thing that is most troubling to me about what is going on with out-of-control salt usage and resulting salt-poisoning is the public's reaction, or lack thereof, to it. It seems to me that the public is a little too accepting of whatever advertisers and corporatist media feed them and is too unwilling to research things for themselves. I think the misconceptions harbored by the public about the necessity to use salt are dangerous to their health.
Just as too many of the American public still harbors troubling ideas about soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, so does the public have misconceptions about salt. A huge one is that we need salt so then we grab the shaker and pour it on our food. The truth is that the average American consumer cannot avoid salt - a cup of milk has 80 mg and a slice of bread has 150 mg. In one meal, they surpass 500 mg.
In short, to remain healthy we need less salt and less government intervention! Maybe the Gazzanigas will write a recipe for less government - something like the skip-government recipe book for living a healthy life!
good.......2006-02-25
Good info about coooking a whole meal. Frustrated that it was referring to pages/recipes in prior book. If it was important to mention I WANTED RECIPE REPEATED IN THIS BOOK. I was grateful I had the book prior.

This Book Will Not Disappoint! .......2007-08-10
My S/O and I took our first serious back-country trip in more than 15 years last week. We relied completely on this book for meal planning and food preparation. We were not disappointed. The recipes are all written in clear language, and are easy to follow. Packable trail instructions are available on-line, which helps with cooking in remote campsites. Of course, we could not try every single recipe -- but here are some of the best ones we tried. We had Olympus Oatmeal for breakfast every day. The Brunswick Stew was excellent, although it took a long time and lots of fuel to rehydrate the dried beans. The Vegan Super Hero Burritos were our favorite. The Whole-Food Granola Bars and Horse Thief GORP (we used unsweetened chocolate chips instead of carob chips) saw us through some long days of paddling and hiking. Our favorite snacks were the Energy Balls. We fought over the last one of those! I would warn others that many of the recipes call for prepackaged foods, such as Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice. People with specific health concerns should check the contents of these items before they use them. Fortunately, Zatarain's makes a low-sodium version of Red Beans and Rice, which we used. Otherwise, this is an excellent book. You can truly trust the recipes. I recommend it highly.
Great for at Home, Too!.......2007-07-24
This is such a good book, not only for vegetarian trail food, but for at-home cooking as well. Simple instructions, common ingredients, quick and easy preparation - not to mention great taste!
Highly recommended!
Lipsmackin' Vegetarian Backpackin'.......2007-03-26
I stumbled upon this book while perusing other vegetarian titles and must say the Connors' title immediately grabbed me. "Lipsmackin' Vegetarian Backpackin'" -- makes you want to read the book and recommend it to someone, just so you can mouth those toothsome words! Obviously, a healthful lifestyle and thoughtful approach to diet have served the authors' intellectual capacities well, everything about the book is smart. The recipes are mostly contributed, apparently by friends the Connors' have made on and around trails, and the recipe titles are sometimes almost as clever as the book's title; more importantly, the recipes look simple and delicious (at this writing I haven't tried them), and their presentation is smartly organized. Nutritional information is included. For its niche audience, be they vegan, lacto-ovo vegetarian, or ready-to-improve omnivore, this book has got to be as good as it gets.
Great cook book.......2007-03-14
This book is full of quick and easy recipes that taste good. My family used recipes from this book on a 9-day road trip and saved a ton of cash by not eating out every day. The easy clean up and little need for cooking equip make this a great camping cook book.

Great models, but very hard!.......2007-09-25
I was able to fold one of the models in this book (the ant.) I aspire to fold the others someday, after much, much more practice with easier books. They look really cool, so they give me a goal to aim for, but I am not certain if I will ever get there.
Five stars because they are great designs.

Origami Insects and their kin.......2005-11-25
I think that this is a fab book and anyone who can cope with advanced origami should buy it. I got this for christmas last year but found most of the models very hard so if you are a beginner, you may wish to try easier origami books by Robert Lang.
Superb book of origami insects.......2005-09-30
This marvellous book contains instructions for a range of origami insects most of which are very realistic. Most will take a minimum of 2-3 hours each to fold and will require large squares of fine weight foil, preferably Japan type, for initial practice pieces. The computerised diagrams are clear and concise and accurately drawn, though the models are advanced and will require some folding experience even to begin to attempt the techniques involved.
I enjoyed the grasshopper in particular and have made it several times. Writing this review has made me want to go and fold it again!
This book is a must for any paperfolder and is one you will come back to again and again.
Book Description
Easy-to-follow guide gives step-by-step instructions for creating more than 25 origami birds and bugs, including a pair of ducks and geese, a cardinal, an anhinga, an open-mouthed pelican, a woodpecker, a turkey, and a vulture with outstretched wings. The bugs include several beetles, a wasp, a spider, and a butterfly.

... the perfect cockroach.......2004-11-19
As you probably guessed Bugs and Birds in Origami is book of nifty but more challenging patterns to try out once you have already done some basic origami. The birds designs are intermediate difficulty. The bugs range towards hard, but are conversation pieces once you fold them. (Use Amazon's Look Inside feature and the pics will tell you clearly how cool these designs are.)
Diagrams were as clear as possible, given that the designs are often complex (sometime there are like 8 arrows on the same step telling you to fold all at once - gack). I was able to work through these given enough time.
I recommend this book only if you know you have the patience to try and work through each pattern very carefully. These are very nice designs but also complex and not for beginners.
Excellent Montroll book to add to your collection.......2001-08-06
I buy every new Montroll origami book sight unseen and I've never been disappointed. This book is no exception.
Historically, Montroll's bird models are among the best because: - They are pretty reasonable to fold, and don't rely on lots of "feather detail" which usually just means lots of tedious pleats.
- They can stand up! Many bird models will simply not stand when when complete. Most of Montroll's will and that, in my mind makes the model alot more appealing.
The birds in this book have closed backs and enough substance on their legs to stand, you will be very pleased with the results.
As far as the bugs go, if you have ever tried to fold any of the bugs from Lang's "Origami Insects and their Kin." you will be quite happy with what Montroll has to offer here. Using nothing more than 10-inch kami, an intermediate folder should be able to handle anything in this book.
Finally a Montroll book on insects............2001-06-20
As usual I have always looked forward to Montroll's books.
Even after getting this one, I cannot help but wonder what he will come up with next.
A general comment is that is book's models is of intermediate standard, similar in standard and style to Montroll's recent books. The birds can be classified as slightly below the intermediate standard suitable for beginners who wants to try something a bit more difficult. Compared to his first book "Origami for the Enthusiasts" and "Animal Origami for the Enthusiasts", Montroll's two outstanding books, the models within are of slightly lower standard. I believe Montroll is capable of doing better that is why I keep looking forward to his new books and purchasing every one in the market.
In this book, Montroll tackle the subject on insects which he has yet to do so in other books. Although the final product's standard is below what I expected, nevertheless, the insects have all the necessary body parts and they are not too difficult to fold. I have seen some of Montroll's insects and I had high hopes when I saw the title of his new book.
For birds, you will find models on goose, cardinal, crow, snipe, ibis, flamingo, ostrich, pheasant, quetzal, pelican, turkey, woodpecker, goose with outstretched wings, pigeon, humming bird, vulture, robin, crane, parrot and stork. None of these models caught my eye and cause me to sit down immediately to fold it. My favourites are pheasant, humming bird, pigeon and cardinal. I like folding birds.
For insects, you find scavenger beetle, ladybird, fly, spider, wasp, long-horned beetle, earwing and butterfly. Again nothing here caught my eye. Sorry if I am difficult to please. I cannot help but compare this to Kawahata's Insects.
Overall, if I were to compare this book with other Montroll's books, I will give this 3.5 out of 5 but compare with other origami books in the market, I will give this a 4.5 out of 5. Hence I rate this with 5 stars.
This book is still a good investment for origami enthusiasts.

A Must-Have for Christian Parents.......2000-11-14
"The Big 10 for Little Saints" is a beautiful book. The ten commandments are written in Biblical form and followed by a simple and effective explanation. I especially like the phrase, "cheerfully obey your mom and dad"! Both my 4 1/2 year old and three year old like this book and are learning the ten commandments at a young age. AND, the illustrations are wonderful... beautifully done and they depict a healthy, happy family-oriented home.

Book Description
Spirited youthful letters that trace the making of a great critic whose taste would shape the art world of his time
Clement Greenberg was, and remains, America's most perceptive, prescient, and influential art critic. More than any other writer, it was he who charted the course through the early years of Abstract Expressionism, and whose taste and judgment established the reputations of such art stars as Pollock, de Kooning, and David Smith.
Before all that, however, he was a young man burning to become an intellectual, who went forth to experience art and culture-and a lot of life and love along the way. His closest confidant during these youthful years was Harold Lazarus, a classmate at Syracuse University and a future professor of English. From 1928, when both were nineteen, until 1943, they exchanged honest, funny, and intimate letters, and now Greenberg's widow has gathered together his side of the correspondence. The result is intellectual history on-the-hoof, a raw and candid account of Greenberg's thoughts and fears, his prodigious reading and culture watching, his army years and mental breakdown, his unquenchable curiosity and artistic appetite.
Here, in The Harold Letters, is the rare opportunity to join a great tastemaker as he grapples with his own understanding of life and the arts amidst the social, political, and cultural turbulence of the 1930s. Above all, here is all the passion and pain of being twentysomething with a dream to follow and a world to conquer-anytime, anywhere.

confessions of an angry young man.......2003-08-01
Anyone curious to learn more about the (in)famous art critic Clement Greenberg will be intrigued by this collection, which documents his letters to his friend Harold Lazarus between 1928-43. Unfortunately, few of Harold's replies are extant, thus we are only privy to one side of the correspondance. We are presented with the fascinating portrait nonetheless; of an ambitious and extremely well-read young man, although not a particularly pleasant one.
Readers of Greenberg's criticism will be surprised by the tone of the letters; they are passionately and often carelessly written, possessing none of the clarity and composure of his professional writing. He admits at one point to Harold that he never read over his letters after having written them, and this would perhaps explain the rather uncompromising attitudes displayed in them.
Like many intellectuals, Greenberg was prone to bouts of depression and dissatisfaction with life in general. His lethargy and unwillingness to get a job was evident early on, noting in 1928, "it is becoming increasingly apparent that a literary life is only compatible with leisure." It was this aristocratic life of luxury which he undoubtedly aspired towards, noting a year later "I can't get enthusiastic about things that haven't any pleasure in them." (Coincidentally Greenberg's theories would later bemoan the decline of aristocratic patronage in the arts.)
One gets the impression that Greenberg thought himself the only man on earth who wasn't enthralled with the notion of working for a living. His stubborn selfishness is also evident in the way he writes of his relations to others. For instance, after the break-up of his first marriage, he complained of having to contribute time or money to the upbringing of his son Danny- it is unsurprising that the boy grew up to be a deeply troubled young man. He spoke coldly of his father and treated his step-mother with contempt due to her lack of intellectual pedigree. Even his Partisan Review colleagues did not escape his barbed comments ("Preserve culture from Jews. Hitler's almost right", he writes in 1940.) Most curiously, however, is how Greenberg "dropped" Harold in the 1940s after having corresponded so intimately with him for 15 years. It is sadly typical of his heartlessness towards others.
Nonetheless, there are elements of humour throughout- Greenberg's constant references to his increasing baldness, for instance, as well as worries over his manhood (his poolside colleagues were "twice the size" it seems- oh dear.) This humour helps to alleviate the reader from enduring Greenberg's obsessions and prejudices, and make the collection just about worth the effort.
Writing of his ex-wife in 1939, Greenberg unwittingly describes himself in a nutshell: "She is positively the most selfish and heartless woman I've a clear conception of. The lack of a sense of responsibility and reciprocity to her fellow mortals, the easy motives for her acts- the fact that she requires so little motive to justify her cruelty." As a professional critic Greenberg would later emphasise how life was more important than art- that one should be a good citizen before being a good artist or writer. It's just a pity that, given the evidence here, he didn't always apply these high standards to himself.

Book Description
Though he has been dead for 100 years, Ned Kelly is probably the best-known of all Australians. Through the use of text and original source documents, Ned Kelly Reconstructed shows how different versions of his story arose, reflecting the views of their creators rather than reality. Using Ned Kelly as an illustration, the book demonstrates how readers and viewers make their own, different meanings for the same text. It questions our acceptance of ‘truth’ and awakens readers to the power of text, whether it be in the form of stories, newspaper reports, poems, or whatever. Ned Kelly Reconstructed will be a welcome addition to both the English and the History classroom.
