    5 out of 5 stars Readings @ The Zoo.......2002-10-05

I volunteer at the local zoo. On "slow" days, I sometimes have pauses between crowds to show around. On these occasions, one or two chapters hilariously filled the gap. In fact, I think the keepers thought I was about in need of being caged, I laughed so loudly. WONDERFUL light reading, and educational also.

5 out of 5 stars Good For Short Reading!.......2002-02-11

This book is interesting reading for those short times one must occasionally spend waiting during the day. Personally, I have used this book as my "bathroom reader" on a number of occasions. The stories are amusing and fairly captivating. This is a book that may not have caught my eye at a bookstore, but once opened, would have held my attention.

5 out of 5 stars Small Town Doctor.......2001-04-21

Really cool! I come from a small town back East and it was interesting to see the care and concern I experienced with small town doctors back home. Hilarious too!

    Book Description

Dr. William G. Crook's research has shown that many health disorders in both men and women can be traced to an overgrowth in the body of common yeast, Candida albicans. This revised edition of his popular handbook on the subject contains 25 percent new information, including data on health problems in children, interstitial cystitis, endometriosis, multiple sclerosis, alternative medicine, and non-prescription anti-yeast medications.

2 out of 5 stars Book Needs to be Renamed--Mostly Filler.......2007-09-23

One of the jobs of an editor is to determine whether the content of the material matches the title. "The Yeast Connection Handbook: This easy-to-follow guide brings readers the latest information about yeast-related disorders and how to overcome them." Of that title and subtitle, only four of the 14 chapters are related to the subject matter. The rest of the material branches off into common knowledge subjects like diet, nutrition, exercise, drug-related illnesses and homespun advice about how to feel better, like avoiding chemicals, smoke, hazardous materials, and so forth. In this case, the author has acceptable material, but is not related at all to the title. In this case, in order to make this book acceptable, the title would have to be changed to something like, "Dr. Crook's Advice for Better Living," or perhaps "Everyday knowledge and Your Health" or some similar phrase. So if we extracted the relevant knowledge of yeast infections and yeast-related illnesses, we would have a forty page booklet instead of a 274-page book filled with information that has been repeated tens of thousands of times in tens of thousands of other books, materials, doctor's office literature and encyclopedias. We don't need to see what the essential vitamins are and what they do,for instance, or the health benefits of exercise, because such knowledge can be found on the Internet--even when this book was printed in 1999, there was already total saturation regarding common diet, nutrition and proper health guideline knowledge.

On page 93, there is a homespun comic of pollutants as they are represented in a simple diagram. One of the callouts has "contactants" as a source of modern ailments; a substance that can cause an allergic reaction. "Contactant" is a word so rarely used in the layperson community that "allergen" would have been better. This all gets back to the point: what does this have to do with yeast infections? Yeast anything?

So while "The Yeast Connection Handbook" is adequately written, the content is mostly filler. As a writer and editor myself, I would have redlined the whole project as unpublishable, because the entire premise of the book assumes the reader was in a time capsule or living in a cave for the previous fifty years. Dr. Crook needs to extract only the relevant information, add new source material and new information as relating to his title, and then compose a revised first edition. As it is, the information is too common to sell as a marketable publication. My goal is not to infuriate the author as much as it is constructively criticising the content and how it is related to the title. The title is everything. Otherwise, the title has to be renamed to match the contents. If not, it reduces the credibility of the author. So it must be that the publisher is more of a vanity press, and would accept almost any type of manuscript, and did not catch this woefully inexcusable oversight. A major publisher would have caught it right away.

    4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-08-03

After reading the reviews, I was hesitant about purchasing this book. The internet provides a vast amount of information on the subject. When I started reading it, I thought that the reviews were right in the sense that it was redundant information. Not so...the first 8 or so chapters shows you how wide spread this problem is and how subtle and diverse the symptoms can be. The second half explains the different treatments & nutritional requirements. I don't think you can read too much on this subject, and I would recommend this book.

I have SEVERE Fibromyalgia and this book has given me a new life!! I have not felt this well in THIRTY YEARS!! Also one of the fabulous benefits of this way of eating is that, in the first two weeks of using this cookbook, and eating as it is suggessted .....I lost SIXTEEN pounds and am still loosing and I am never hungry, except when it is time to eat again!! I HIGHLY reccommend this book! How I wish Dr. Crook had written it thirty years ago!!!

    2 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2002-10-29

The book offered all the information that I had already read on the internet about Candida. It was poorly laid out and did not offer a comprehensive section on treatments. Yes, it listed some treatments, prescription and over the counter, but it did little in the way of telling me how much of what to take and any complications that may arise from taken them together or separately. All in all a poorly written book about information that is better obtained on the web.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book to learn about candida and how to remedy it........2002-08-21

Read Dr. Crook's book, if you have taken repeated doses of antibiotics, suffer from chronic yeast infections, or have any of the new modern diseases, CFS, FMS, even ADD. Candida effects both men and women. You can give Dr. Crook's book to your physician. Tell your physician that you want to get tested for yeast imbalance, and then hand him or her the "The Yeast Connection Handbook". Appendix A, "A Special Message To The Physician", has information directed toward skeptical doctors.

My physician knew about candida problems and treatment. She prescribed a yeast-sensitivity panel for me (available from Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory - see pages 200-205, Lab #10 on page 205), so my gut candida could be killed with the right medications. Retake a yeast-sensitivity panel every so often. You may have several strains of yeast that develop in your gut, those that grow will be ones that have a pre-existing or newly-developed immunity to your anti-candida medication. If you eat sugar while you take your anti-candida medication, immune candida may thrive in your gut. If that happens, you will need to test again and cycle through another round of anti-candida treatment.

In Chapter 9 of "The Yeast Connection Handbook", Dr. Crook offers his recommendations for dietary and lifestyle changes to include along with your anti-candida medical treatment. Follow his recommendations. You may also read the book "Yeast Connection Success Stories", to grasp what people have done to keep their candida under control after their medical treatment was over. You will understand how important lifestyle changes are to staying symptom-free.

"The Yeast Connection Handbook" contains so much information: instructions to follow, doctor's statements, case studies, lab names, medication names, and extended references. Reading a few paragraphs in the right chapter could change your life. Browse the table of contents and index. Take careful notes. This book has valuable information on every page.

Knowledge of yeast-related diseases truly is new information for the twenty-first century. Dr. Crook shines the light of his knowledge on the subject. His book "The Yeast Connection Handbook" brings valuable information to you and to the mainstream medical community.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Mexican.......2001-08-01

This is one of the best of the Mexican cookbooks for people who want to incorporate food more authentic than "Tex-Mex," cheese-smothered dishes into a health-conscious lifestyle. While the dishes aren't meant to be historically and culturally precise, they do in my opinion represent the progression in Mexican cooking that has been overdue. A vegetarian-friendly cookbook, "Mexican Light" was written by a woman who clearly has eaten what she cooks, and has tinkered extensively with her creations to come up with just the right textures, flavors, and spices. The recipes run the gamut and can be made every day or for special occasions. Her approaches for fat-free chips have eliminated store-bought kinds in my household. The tostadas, blackbean-and-tomato soup, quesadillas, and pureed fruit desserts are wonderful. The potato-and-chicken soup with lime is fantastic and simple, easily converted to vegetarian by substituting seitan for the chicken. The chayote-and-yam stew is a favorite amongst my friends, as is the potato-and corn salad. The corn soup dish, while time consuming, is spectacular and makes the best of sweet corn in August. The most-made dish in my house is the green chilaquiles, totally unique and better in her recipe than any I've had in a restaurant.

5 out of 5 stars Flavorful recipes that give "light" a good name........1998-09-07

This is a very useful book filled with delicious recipes that my picky husband and our guests love. Try the chipotle chicken salad! The instructions are simple to follow and most recipes are not too time consuming.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of tasty, healthy, but not authentic recipes.......1998-07-21

Most of the dishes I've cooked in the last few months have been recipes from this excellent book. If you've used Shulman's other cookbooks, you'll recognize the style: chatty writing, bold flavors (e.g., lots of garlic and cilantro), a mixture of vegetarian and meat dishes, careful instructions in the recipes, a nutritional summary for each recipe, and a separate chapter on unusual ingredients. Many of the dishes in this book can be made in 30 minutes to an hour, though some are more complex. And while the food may be good for you, it tastes terrific.

Don't expect this book to be an authoritative survey of Mexican cooking. There's no mole poblano, or even a burrito recipe. Some recipes are fairly authentic, others merely "inspired" by Mexican ingredients. Since the recipes she concocts are often as good as the classics she leaves out, that's a minor drawback.

3 out of 5 stars Authentic Design, all you need to recreate Classic Arts and Crafts Projects.......2007-05-15

23 pages of "how-to's" and then detailed 2D and isometric drawings with dimensions and with cut lists. Cheap paper, no color, but clarity is very high because the plans are in drawing form rather than photos. Could have been improved with exploded diagrams of through-tenon joints, but Stickley's craftsmen didn't need that evidently. The projects are authentic, and work for woodworkers who don't want any style upgrades and only want the 1rst generation Arts and Crafts that the book represents.

4 out of 5 stars Good Source of Information.......2007-05-07

I have enjoyed looking at the plans and for the most part are very well done but I have built some of the pieces and have found errors in the measurements - as you should always do Measure Twice and cut once

Overall I would buy other books from Mr. Lang

        4 out of 5 stars Don't take it as gospel . . ........2005-03-26

I built the #332 Morris Chair from the plans in this book and found a huge mistake in the measurements: the chair was fully 4" too wide (I caught this in time to fix it, thank goodness). In Mr. Lang's drawings the seat area is measured at 27" wide; in all the Stickley catalogs, it's clearly labeled as 23". Several of the other dimensions were also questionable.
Much of the information in the book, in the text and the drawings, is very valuable. I've enjoyed the book and would buy it again in a minute. Just make sure, if accuracy is important to you, to check his details against every picture and description of an original piece that you can find!!

3 out of 5 stars Nice book but bad measurements.......2003-12-07

This book is an excellent compendium of arts and craft style furniture, but boys and girls, check your measurements when you start some of the pieces. I built the wardrobe No112 and have pretty good shop experience. I found errors all over that particular wardrobe. I can understand bad measurements but some were obviously the planners fault.
Admittedly I have not built anything else in the book and this is a fairly elaborate piece. But I found myself shaving off full half inches where I shouldn't have to. Triple check any measurements made and you will be fine! It is unfortunate that such a detailed book with great ideas for plans does not have its measurements doubled checked. The scales for the furniture in the book do not match some of the drawings either. When I get a series of drawings I expect the measurements to be tried and tested. The book does have a good set of suggestions to build the furniture. Sometimes drawings are missing though that would clarify the project. The economy of pages makes the carpenter lose out.

5 out of 5 stars "Shop Drawings" useful and fun.......2001-12-22

Ever since building our first piece of "Stickley" style furniture I've been looking for a book with more ideas. This one certainly filled the bill. Given the time, I could outfit my whole house with these attractive pieces! Mr. Lang's style helped make it an enjoyable read while his hints and advice came in useful from the start. An added benefit was the facinating history of the Stickley company. It really gave me some insight as to the designs.

          Book Description

Frida Kahlo is probably the most idolized artist of her time. At the root of the scholarly speculation and pop-culture paraphernalia lies Frida Kahlo: An Open Life, first published in Mexico in 1983 and now available in an English-language paperback for the first time. This irreplaceable, eclectic collection reveals the complexities, profound sadness, and immutable creative spirit of the famed Mexican painter. The intimate picture of the often enigmatic Kahlo presented in this book has become an invaluable source for scholars. The author, a prominent Mexican art critic and historian, befriended Diego Rivera, Kahlo's husband, in Chile and in 1953 came with him to Mexico City, where she met and interviewed Frida Kahlo a year before Kahlo's death. She lived with Kahlo for a while in Coyoacán in Mexico City and then for a time at Rivera's San Angel Inn home. Frida Kahlo: An Open Life uses medical records, journals, letters, interviews, and personal recollections to bring us closer than ever to the Mexican artist and her milieu.

Uses medical records, journals, letters, interviews, and personal recollections to bring us closer than ever to the Mexican artist and her milieu.

2 out of 5 stars Frida Kahlo: An Open Life.......2002-01-13

It's an interesting subject, but I found the book to be quite confusing. It skips around chronologically and often fails to explain fully the events that are mentioned. In addition, the translation is quite awkward in places. I would presume that the translator was attempting to preserve the flavor of the original, but she does so in a way that interferes with comprehension.

4 out of 5 stars Frida Kahlo, A Strong and Noble Survivor of a Trying Life.......2000-06-15

This book is a documentary on the life of Frida Kahlo. It is interesting because it doesn't focus soley on her art, but more directly emphasizes her emotional strength as a woman. A large portion of the book is exerpts from private conversations with Frida, as well as diary entries, medical records, and personal letters. Her life is filled with tragedy, but the book shows the incredible spirit of Kahlo as she faces near death and struggles as a female artist in a male dominated world. This book also gives the reader insight into the famed relationship of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Frida Kahlo: An Open Life, is written by Raquel Tibol who befriended Rivera in the 1950's and subsequently met and lived with Kahlo a year before her death. This book provides an unique perspective on the personal life of the very strong willed Kahlo.
