Book Description
The author and his eight crewmembers bailed out of their crippled B-24 on their 24th mission over enemy territory. Shot at and then captured by the Germans, they were taken to a stalag in Nuremberg, and then on a forced march to another in Moosburg. They were strafed by Allied planes, nearly lynched by an angry mob, starved, and shot at again by retreating SS just before their liberation by General Patton. Incredibly, all nine crewmembers survived, and eight of them contributed to this remarkable account that took 20 years to write.

Unique in that Officers and EM were kept together........2007-05-01
Shot down late in the war, January 28th,1945, when most Stalags were , or had been , put on the road in Germany's worst winter in 50 years, this crew was unique in that they were kept together, as they made their way to Moosburg Stalag 7A. The book has good maps of their routes. Their individual stories are very powerful in the "warts and all" way they are presented without any defensiveness. When Worthen made Bombardier, instead of Pilot, he was devastated, but wrote it may have saved the lives of a crew later. One crewman wrote of his emotional problems openly, which I appreciated having been raised by a former POW who had walked out of Germany thru Stalag Luft 3, 13D and 7A, it was refreshing.
There could be more pictures. The thought that 78000 US POWs were left behind with the Russians is a stretch, and disproved in the recent,"The Last Escape" by John Nichol, where it is shown that US Pows were returned in exchange for giving Stalin a free hand in Poland, and for handing over the Russian POWs, many who had fought for the Germans, to Stalin, who then had them murdered. The suggestion that their engine feathering problems, causing their crash, were due to mechanic sabotage back at the 93rd BG, Hardwick, was kind of a shock. The idea comes from the Co-Pilot who disliked B-24s and being a Co-pilot. This was the first time I had seen this sabotage idea inside the BG in 40 books on this subject. In spite of some of my concerns this is a fine book/diary about a "good group of people" who more than met the test they were given.
A real page-turner.......2007-02-20
I've read a lot of books of various periods in history - they all, of course, tell about events and their causes. But very, very few of them succeed in rendering their subject matter as a "felt experience". This book accomplishes that. While reading it, I had the feeling that I knew what it felt like to have been with these guys in their training and on their missions, even though I had not even been born yet when these events occurred.
History does not exist as an abstraction; it exists as a personal perspective, as actual people lived and experienced it. This book draws you into those events and times in such a way that make the intervening 60 years seem but a moment.
Delivered Far More Then I Expected.......2007-02-02
I really enjoyed the style in which this book was written.
Fifty years after these events took place; nine of the original ten crewmembers of this doomed B-24 were assembled again for this writing. Each one was able to share a snapshot glimpse of what they experienced in their own words and thoughts as the story progresses.
Very interesting, it really gives the reader a front row seat to what these brave men lived and survived.

Contains much sound advice.......2007-09-21
Talane's book is packed with sound advice and answers to some of today's more perplexing social questions. I don't agree with everything she suggests (calling every jerk from your past to share how their behavior upset you?), but her viewpoints are nevertheless well taken. Look past the occasional 7th-grade, trendy, colloquial writing style and this book will prove to be most inspirational.
Fresh and different.......2006-12-08
I don't know that I would trust a book that didn't have a few detractors. I have to confess I'm confused when some reviewers call this book too elementary. I think it's practical and accessible, and that those are two of its greatest strengths. You will start changing and growing right from the first PAGE. But if you're not ready, you probably won't, and that's okay too. Save it for later, like one poster did, or donate it to a church rummage sale and maybe change someone else's life. It's all good stuff. Thanks Talane! You're making it possible for me to "coach myself" because I can't afford to hire one right now. But you wait... I will be hiring a coach before long, I know it!
When the student is ready, the teacher will appear........2006-10-06
I tried to read this book three years ago, and at the time, I would have heartily agreed with some of the other critiques. I stumbled through a few of the chapters and tossed it on my bookshelf without another thought. It did not seem to apply to my life at the time and I thought it was too much fluff for me. Oh, how little did I know back then! Fortunately, I didn't give the book away and today I'm glad that I gave it a second chance. I have learned that sometimes we are not prepared to read certain books at certain times in our lives. Just because it may not compliment our current mindset, we tend to blame the book. That is exactly what I did three years ago.
Now, three years later, with my life plate so full that it is overflowing, I saw this book as if it was beckoning me to read it. This book is exactly what I need to read at this point of my overcrowded life. The author gives point after point so applicable to me, it feels as if she has read my personal life story. The instructions are delivered in a delicate manner, yet they are dead on accurate. Some of the advice hits me to the core. I can really relate to each chapter. Sometimes with a nod, and most of the time with an "ouch".
To reap the most of this book, I kept a notebook handy because Talane gives a lot of impromptu exercises. This is great for getting the creative juices flowing on the spot and for reflecting back on my thoughts at a later date.
There is a famous quote about self development: "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." I am glad that I was ready when I took that second look at this valuable book. I have gained a lot from it and would recommend it to anyone who is READY to take life to the next level.
Terrific book to help you reach your goals.......2006-08-02
Recommended to me by a mentor, this book offers easy-to-read, concrete suggestions to improve areas of your life that might be holding you back--whether you are working toward personal or professional goals--or both.
Highly, highly recommend it--of note is her 4-step way to stand up to someone who is behaving in an ugly manner toward you without escalating the situation.
If you're serious about changing and/or reaching a difficult goal, this book is a valuable tool.
Inane and Useless.......2006-03-15
This book is a rip-off. There is no new information in it. It purports to give unique insights, when all it does is rehash conventional wisdom.

If you've been a yo-yo dieter for years or if you can eat a pound of pasta at one sitting, this book may very well be an eye opener. In simple--but never condescending--language, it explains the roots of carbohydrate cravings and teaches you how to normalize your insulin levels to prevent future food binges. Regulated insulin levels in turn help to temper serotonin levels, so food cravings and mood swings are prevented. The authors, both research scientists (one a health psychologist, the other a pathologist), have lost and kept off a total of 200 pounds between them. They've based this book on nearly a decade's worth of research, during which they've helped nearly 80 percent of their patients lose weight and keep it off for at least a year.
They explain that carbohydrate addicts most commonly crave popcorn, breads, bagels, rice, pasta, potatoes, ice cream, chocolate, pie, cookies, crackers, cake, fruit and fruit juice, potato chips, and pretzels. A questionnaire at the beginning of the book determines if you're indeed a carbohydrate addict, and if so, to what extent. (For those readers whose quiz doesn't indicate addiction, but who are bothered by their food cravings, the authors recommend a doctor's visit for an explanation.) The book includes a diet plan with dozens of easy recipes, a chart of the carbohydrate content of many common foods, and lists of binge triggers to watch for. The most appealing part of the diet--and one reason that it wins raves from its followers--is its once-a-day reward meal, which allows you to eat anything you want. The authors also offer helpful tips for incorporating the diet away from home, such as at parties and restaurants.
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal book---finally a "diet" I can live with.......2007-08-17
I have tried a vast amount of different diets in an effort both to lose weight as well as to curb my evening (and sometimes all-day) binges --from Atkins to Weight Watchers and everything in between. But The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet (CAD) is postively a miracle worker as I have lost the weight AND the binging in record time! Plus, I feel better than I have in years as I am eating many vegetables and yet still "indulging" at night in some carbs that make me feel human. I really think the Reward Meal is what is so ingenious about this way of life--it lets you eat your favorite foods without feeling deprived which for me was a huge binge trigger.
My typical day of eating looks like this: For breakfast, I'll have an omelette with some goat cheese, thyme, and asparagus along with a cup of coffee and some cream. For lunch, a fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato salad over spinach greens or perhaps some grilled salmon on a salad with vinaigrette. For a snack, some zucchini "bread" (in "500 More Low-Carb Recipes"--sensational book!) and then for dinner I will have a caesar salad followed by lasagne and some homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk. Delicious day of eating and hardly a "diet" if you ask me--and yet the weight is falling off!
As another bonus, my mood has gotten better and I am more "regular" than ever before--perhaps TMI, but it is true.
Overall, I would rank this book ten stars if I could. The concepts are simple and yet they work wonders--I am a CAD follower for life.
Ummm..........2007-08-13
I read the book and really enjoyed it. I tried the diet and could not stick with it. I think I really felt more hungry during this diet than on any other day. I think this could probably really work for other people but I am not a big meat, cheese, egg eater. I also just find the idea of being able to eat as many carbs as you want at one time a little questionable.
Its A Lifestyle Come True.......2007-07-08
This is a perfect way of life. I lost 10 pounds the first week on this diet. Then I lost like 5 Lbs The next. I enjoy foods like cheeseburgers, pizzas, cakes, pastas, my rice. It is all good. I lost 15.2 Lbs in Total. Its Great!
Just Getting Started.......2007-06-20
I had weight loss surgery almost 4 years ago. In the last year, I have gained 19 lbs back. I took the CAD test and I am a moderate addict. So I am going to give this book a try. I will keep everyone posted.
Carbo Addict review.......2007-06-12
This is an interesting book, for those of us who buy and borrow diet books. I am pretty sure I could be a chapter of this book! I wish they would do an update of this book as it was published years ago and I am pretty sure a lot of things are out of date since they did their research. I'm not sure it would be an easy diet to follow but if you are addicted to carbs I think it sure is worth trying. What have you got to lose? If this works so well and has been around for years, why haven't we heard about this diet lately?

Carbohydrate Addict's Program for Success.......2001-09-14
Be warned, this book does NOT contain the Carbohydrate Addict's Program food plan. The authors carefully leave any practical information out of this book, to force you to buy another one of their books to get it. Instead, this book is full of rehashed motivational psychobable (which any dieter has read hundreds of times before) about carbohydrate addiction.
A very disappointing book and NOT worth paying full price for

I have lost over 25 lbs and keep it off , since last Feb 99. I will stay on this the rest of my life. I have showed this to other people and they are on this also. I am a farm girl and used to eating bacon and eggs foe breakfast, although i eat other thing also. My Husband in on this also and loves it. If i can eat any thing i want once a day for a meal, i think that it is great. I drink lot's of water and don't get hungary anymore. Thanks for giving ud something that we can live with. Heart Healthy Valentine's Day 2000.......2000-02-17
I have been on the program since January and already feel more focused. It is easy to follow the plan; and I don't at all feel cheated. But, since I have had a lifelong weight problem (I'm a former Weight Watcher lecturer who has gained all her weight plus another 50 lbs back), needed the workbook to focus of the emotionality of my eating difficulties. I come from a long line of over-eaters; they still talk constantly about food and bingeing. This workbook is really helping me understand myself and put aside the self-blame.
Almost like a miracle.......1999-12-13
I first heard about this diet 3 years ago when I was pregnant with baby #3. Recently, after the Heller's were on Oprah, I was reminded of it and bought the book. I have been working out consistently with a trainer for 6 months PLUS following a low fat high carb diet. I didn't loose a pound! After taking the quiz I knew I was Carbo addicted. I studied the guidelines and decided to try it. The first day I lost 3 pounds. I've been on the diet a week and I've lost 7 pounds! The weight is melting off. I have been a little hungry but it's Christmas. A lot of food around to tempt. BUt I've remained true to the guidelines and enjoyed my reward meal every day. It's getting easier. BUy this book. Take the quiz on the website and if you see yourself in the Q&A--BUY THIS BOOK. You will be so grateful to the Hellers. IF you are Carbo. Addicted this diet is the best for you.
Customer Reviews:
Highly informative and entertianing!.......1999-11-19
Dr. Prices' book is a thorough overview of a variety of animals and how to trian and care for them. I found it not only entertaining but also helpful. The stories are delightful, funny and show great compassion. The information about the animals has been helpful since we own a wide range of animals from domestic farm and pets to exotic animals. It is wonderful to have a book in our library that we can use to help when there are questions about our animals. My daughter read the stories and the information also and found it helpful and enjoyable. We would recommend this book for pet and animal lovers, those who are trying to decide upon a pet and those who already own pets.

Customer Reviews:
"Sew Today's Fashions for 18-inch dolls" by Joan Hinds.......2007-09-09
I ordered this book because I've made scores of clothes using Hinds' EXCELLENT book, "Contemporary Wardobe for 18-inch Dolls," which has very fine instructions. I like "Today's Fashions" except for one difficulty: THE PATTERN PIECES ARE NOT NUMBERED. Numbered pieces are much easier to find and keep organized.
I also ordered Hinds' books, "International Wardrobe" and "Baby Doll Clothes," both with numbered pieces. The Spanish huipil (International)turned out nicely; however, one step was omitted in the instructions: finishing the back edges.
Hinds does wonderful, imaginative work; I'm eager to try many more outfits in "International," "Baby Doll" and "Today's." I've made doll clothes for many years; your delightful books are encouraging me to keep at it. Thank you, Joan!
So much fun!.......2007-03-14
I absolutely love this book. My daughter got her American Girl doll from Santa last Christmas, and she keeps asking for outfits for her. At $25 per outfit on average, it will get too expensive so soon. I found this book on a different website that offers a snapshot and description of each outfit, but of course the book is cheaper on Amazon.
I have some experience in sewing, so the outfits are a breeze to make in just a few hours. They all turn out looking very professional, fit the doll quite well, and my daughter is very very excited. She is only 5, but by watching me make them she is getting interested in sewing herself. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an 18-inch doll and some familiarity with sewing.
toay's fashions for 18 inch dolls.......2007-03-12
Joan Hinds patterns are well though out and easy to follow. Her fashion choices certainly reflect the choices I see on my elementary aged students. I find that they can be integrated with patterns from her other books as well which allows for a lot of creative choices.
Simple and cute.......2007-01-12
Joan Hinds does a great job of turning simple patterns into lovely designs. Most styles are very versatile. The instructions are short and direct. Most beginners should not encounter too mamy problems following along. Full size pattern pieces are included in an envelope attached to the back of the book. This is a much appreciated feature.
The only negative comment that I have is that the clothes tend to fit slightly too big. I understand that this is because the patterns are designed for several different manufacturers of dolls. Therefore it is imperative that you try the clothes on the doll before completing the outfit.
Great Book!.......2006-03-01
I haven't sewed in years, and I have already made 2 outfits that look perfect! The instructions are very easy to follow. This is a good way to get back into sewing.
