The stories that are seldom told........1999-07-03
This is another welcome addition to the history of those men who are generally forgotten but have played a major part in the conflict. In particular, the difference between the treatment of officers and the rest of the army is striking in the Official Records. It is therefore heartning to find works that tell the stories of these soldiers and NCOs.
On a personal level, it was particularly interesting for me as my great-grandfather served with Gus Dey for many years. I found it wonderful that Peter Cavanagh has at last been remembered for his contribution to this conflict.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Book Description
The author, a leading New York physician, was with the American Red Cross Mission to Russia in between July and November of 1917. He landed in Vladivostok and proceeded across Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, then journeyed from Petrograd to Moscow to the Ukraine, through the country of the Volga into Roumania, thence once more to Vladivostok, on a tour of inspection. His official duties took him into every circle of life and provided him with exceptional advantages.
He investigated thoroughly the famous Regiment of Women - the Battalion of Death - and has given us both in photographs and words a memorable picture of that unique organization. He visited the country estate of the Romanoffs immediately after the Czar's hasty disappearance and describes with a tragic touch the nursery of the Crown Prince Alexis and the copybook in which the pathetic royal fledgling had scrawled in his own handwriting, "The French lesson is very hard today."
He lived in hotels and hovels, in cities and in peasant villages; he was the companion of princes, soldiers, rogues, spies and numbers of simple anonymous souls that prompted him to write so warmly and sympathetically of the most enigmatical of nations. Out of such materials Dr. Wightman has fashioned a human document of exceptional charm, and a valuable historical record of the swift transitional days in the life of contemporary Russia.

Why I love Chicken Soup!.......2007-05-15
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul Volume 2 is an inspirational and enlightening book. Being a teenager myself I can relate to a lot of the stories told in this bestseller. The first time I read this book I was younger and didn't understand what the authors in the book were saying, but when I revisited it this year I actually understood it and connected more to the stories. This book has inspired me to write about my personal experiences and really look back at the good, bad, or in between as a way to learn from my mistakes. Instead of breaking down I decided to write. This book has taught me and helped me through some rough times. This book is great and I recommend it to anyone. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul is not just for teenagers, I have even read some stories with my friends and family. This book has been a real joy and inspiration on all aspects of my life. Thanks Chicken Soul and I hope all readers out there will get a chance to read this delightful, motivating, and wonderful book.
An inspirational book.......2006-08-14
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul ll is a great book written by teenagers and some adults about life. It teaches us about life and how to deal with it. It shows us that no matter where you came form, what you look like, or how you act, almost all teenagers are the same. This book is an inspiration to everyone.
This book influences me because it inspires me to become a better person. Before I read this book I thought, "Oh this book is just some boo full of made-up stories", but as I continued to read into it more, I thought" Wow this is a really great book". This book tells you that all teens go through the same stuff. It shows you that your not alone, and with faith and courage you can overcome most obstacles. This book is filled amazing stories of love depression, and hope. I encourage everyone to read this book.
Chicken Soup For the Teenage Soul.......2006-05-22
This is a great book for every teenager. Every teen goes througha tough time at least once in their life and this book can really help. It has stories on things from teenage romance to suicide. This is a great book for everyone from teenagers to adults.
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul 2 is great.......2006-05-22
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul 2 is a great book for teens because it is something we can relate to. It is filled with short anecdotes written by teenagers or once-teenagers about their adolescent experiences. It is inspirational and teaches us about who we are, about people, and about life in general. I recommend this book for all teenagers.
Chicken Soup.......2006-05-21
I think that this book was a very good and fun book to read. Anyone who enjoys hearing about different teens telling their own stories would greatly enjoy this book. While I was reading it, there were times when i felt like laughing and other times when I felt like crying too. The things that teenagers go through are so hard and alot of adults do not understand this, that is why this book is so helpful. It is a very good book to read and I would recommend it to anyone, espically teens.

Nobody else has a collection of Horses like these........2004-11-16
Horses and the Royal Family are as inseparable as Laurel and Hardy and this book sets out to bring that relationship right up to date by concentrating on the present Monarch's relationship with the noblest of animals.
After a short introduction, the book is divided into a series of chapters which cover every aspect of Her Majesty's horses - both personal, sporting and ceremonial. Beginning with her very first pony which was a gift from her Grandfather - King George V, we are treated to a family scrapbook of photographs of the young Princess Elizabeth and other members of the Royal Family which take the reader to 1949. On becoming Queen on the death of her father in 1952, the next chapter explains the Royal Mews, state occasions, various carriages and the functions on which they are used whilst expertly covering the early years of Her Majesty's reign.
Chapter 3 is devoted to "The Turf" and describes the Queen's love of horse racing and show jumping. This provides an excellent lead-in to the next Chapter which is entitled "The Royal Windsor Horse Show" where we are treated to examples of some of the horses which serve Her Majesty as part of the British Army. It is here that we find those glorious Drum Horses of the Household Cavalry - which, for all their size are steered by the knees of the Drummer as he uses both hand to set the tempo for whatever musical display is at hand.
The penultimate chapter is devoted to the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, where we learn of the origins of this, the most senior "Troop" in the British Army. This history is then complimented with personal tales which describe the dangers involved in moving a horse-drawn gun carriage at speed.
Finally, we come to the ceremonial aspect of Her Majesty's position as Head of State - covering everything from Trooping the Colour to riding in Windsor Great Park with a visiting US President - Ronald Reagan in 1982.
Lavishly illustrated with plenty of photographs relevant to the text, this is a book from which everyone with an interest in Her Majesty and all her Horses will learn something of great interest.

Very nice volume overall.......2000-05-15
If you're a horse lover and want to know more about those beautiful creatures and want to see some great color photos of them this is really a very nice book for your shelf. The author has written a good story with lots of facts. And there are some pictures here that will really knock your eyes out.
Richly illustrated, low-impact crash course on the horse........1999-06-22
Yes, Server's "The Majesty of the Horse" may appear as an intelligently packaged picture book for little girls who love "horsies"-- but, in actuality, it is a crisp low-impact crash course into the world of these glorious beasts, one that isn't exclusive for the expert or the amateur. This is, of course, not a book for experts with specific questions-- but for the avarage horse enthusiast looking to learn of and see various beautiful breeds. This is a well-organized and wonderfully visual collection of facts and photographs.

'Did you bring your mother a bit of that lovely English tea?'.......2006-07-07
"It all started with the imbecile, practically sacriligeous, determination of these stubborn Colonists to defy the sacred authority of our Royal and Sovereign Majesty King George III."
- Scheherazade, on her early career as a horse in His Majesty's armed forces
Lawson wrote at least four books in this vein: a famous figure in American history as seen by a close animal companion (ranging from a mouse acting as advisor to a ship's cat). This is the only one of the four in which the narrator would seem at first glance to be based on something that definitely existed, since Revere in his role as a courier obviously *did* have at least one horse.
Lawson, however, isn't attempting to be meticulously accurate; he's concerned with writing an entertaining story that will bring the human historical figure to life, aimed mostly at young readers. So what we have here is historical fiction in which the broad historical details are reasonably correct, including the characters of the leading figures of the Sons of Liberty, but most of the Loyalists are caricatures - the most notable exception being the storyteller, commonly known as "Sherry".
Sherry tells the story as a retrospective in her near-retirement years after her involvement in Revere's pre-War courier work have ended, starting with her early career as the personal mount of an officer in His Majesty's 14th Regiment of Foot. She's careful to retell events as she saw them at the time, underscoring the laughable arrogance of her former associates - at least, of the officers and so-called gentlemen. The "most thrilling moment of [her] entire military career" was the Regiment's last Royal review before being dispatched to Boston - through which her rider and his immediate superior slept on horseback. Lawson's portrait of Sherry's former owner Lt. Barnstable could serve as a poster about the evils of inbreeding among the gentry - and that's just Lawson's illustration. At the time, though, Sherry was deeply devoted to him just because he was her master.
The first two years of the Regiment's posting to Boston are skimmed over very quickly, mostly serving to illustrate how unsanitary long-distance ocean transport could be, the drawbacks of conscripting convicts for jobs they're neither trained nor motivated to perform well, and the high-handed behaviour of the regulars toward the people of Boston (and the cold shoulders they got in return). Unfortunately for Sherry, Barnstable opts to kill time by gambling, and has to sell her to a local factory owner to settle some of his debts.
Thus begins Sherry's long path of disillusionment with her old loyalties, when her devotion to her former master is repaid with life as an ill-treated carthorse, and her former best friend rejects her with "I never speak to civilians". Life is very bleak, until the day she wrecks her cart trying to avoid being seen by her former associates - and comes to the attention of Sam Adams, who arranges for her to be 'appropriated' and turned over to Paul Revere for his courier work. And as Sherry becomes acquainted with the revolutionaries' point of view - and even that of the rank-and-file regulars, mostly homesick conscripts - she herself begins to change.
Revere's personal tragedies in the year in which Sherry comes to live with his family are omitted, but Lawson goes to some trouble to humanize him, emphasizing his family life - particularly along the lines of implying that he couldn't afford a horse of his own, and had never ridden a horse before Sherry was given to him.
A fun story, and while it can't be taken as historical gospel, it might inspire the reader to learn more about the people involved. For that, I recommend PAUL REVERE'S RIDE by David Hackett Fischer.
Mr. Revere and I.......2003-06-18
Mr. Revere and I is about Paul Revere told from the perspective of his horse Sherry. Sherry goes through three owners, the last her favorite. She expierences what it is like to be the horse of a Patriot. We enjoyed reading this book because it includes humor, facts, and sometimes even suspense. That is why we recommend this book to other kids.
wonderful history.......2003-01-09
I teach 8th grade US history and recommend this book to my kids, who range in reading levels. It tells the story of Paul Reevere and the Sons of Liberty from the HORSE'S viewpoint. It is a delightful and very accurate depiction of this most important time in our history. This book can spark the imagination and interest young and old!
this Book was Great.......2001-04-25
I had to read this book for reading in school and I loved'd it. Im in 5th grade and it was still great fun. I am recameding this to you. READ IT. on a 1 to 5 chart, it was a 10. off the charts.
Great Read-Aloud for elementary school kids.......1999-10-28
This book is such fun for adults to read to kids! The hors-ey perspective on American history is a hoot, the vocabulary is challenging, and there are lots of opportunities for discussion with your bright child. The history is accurate, too. It would be an unusually motivated 9 year old who could read this alone, but as a read aloud, it offers benefits to parent and child.

For Beginners.......2007-04-09
This is one of the best books I bought when I decided to do my own flowers for my wedding.
This is not a book for a pro though. It works best for a beginner like me. It explains nicely step by step how to make the arrangements. It could give more information but even still, there is no better book. There is a first version that I bought and together I got some great ideas.

Book Description
A new, updated edition of the "thoughtful and pioneering guide" (Library Journal) to the problems of blending both Jewish and Christian faiths into the lives of children of interfaith marriages. Based on hundreds of interviews, as well as the author's extensive research and personal experience, this highly praised book covers talking with children about God, planning ceremonies, celebrating holidays, relationships with grandparents, and developing a sense of self and belonging. Written with compassion and warmth, it offers a wealth of insight into the complicated feelings and loyalties that parents, children, grandparents, and clergy bring to the subject, and presents positively the options available to interfaith parents concerning religious training and rites of passage, drawing strengths from the two backgrounds. New to this edition are an updated resource section, featuring new online resources, updated statistics, a section on college students of interfaith marriages, the surge in creative new life-cycle ceremonies, and the growth of independent grassroots groups around the country. Multi-faith Forewords are by: Rabbi Lavey Derby, the former director of Jewish education at the 92nd Street YM-YWHA; the Reverend Canon Joel A. Gibson, of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine; and Sheila Gordon, cofounder and director of the Trinity Interfaith Community Program.
Customer Reviews:
Open Minded.......2005-09-05
This was the first book I read on this subject. After getting my friends' opinions of how they have been raising their children with each parent a different religion, I felt I needed more advice from a neutral party. This book helped me become much more open minded about how I could bring a baby into the world with each parent having completely different beliefs. It helped me to see how we can both raise our child with our own religious beliefs while fully respecting each other.
An interfaith child's view.......2002-06-03
I'm sure that Ms. Gruzen has the best of intentions behind this book but I'm afraid that is will not be helpful to interfaith couples. First I must object to the term 'Jewish/Christian' as it's inaccurate for the majority of children. Most of us are, and just prefer to be called the religion we practice i.e. Jewish, Cathloic, Mormon, etc. as is our right. Each has a definition that includes those of mixed backgrounds and that can be a definition itself for those who don't have a set faith.
She shys away from the really sticky issues like the questions if grandma believes you're going to Heaven like she is, even if you don't believe in Christ or that the other grandma wont accept you as being Jewish even if you're practicing. Just 'talking about G-d' wont cut it with kids. She also has really young children so she hasn't faced any of their hard questions they'll be sure to ask in the future.
I wont claim that I have any answers either but it is more than just what decorations to use in December. There are better books on the subject out there for couples that tackle these issues with a little more insight.
An invaluable compendium of keen observation & sound advice.......2001-10-10
Now in a completely revised, expanded and updated second edition, Lee Gruzen's Raising Your Jewish/Christian Child: How Interfaith Parents Can Give Children The Best Of Both Their Heritages continues to be an invaluable compendium of keen observation and sound advice for interfaith parenting. All of the problems and challenges confronting a Jewish/Christian family are drawn from hundreds of interviews as well as Gruzen's extensive professional research and personal experience. The issues covered wide range from beginning talking with children about God, and moving on to planning ceremonies, celebrating holidays, relationships with grandparents, developing and sense of self, and more. Raising Your Jewish/Christian Child is enthusiastically recommended and invaluable reading for anyone in an interfaith marriage and seeking to instill values and an appreciation of heritage within the character of their children.
Helpful for those seeking a non-excluively Jewish route.......2000-09-08
I found this book to be one of the first I discovered that truly examined the option of raising a child to know and respect BOTH religions of the parents. Up until I read this book I was saddened that all advice I'd read said, "Pick one religion and stick with it..."
This seemed too simplistic It would necessarily exclude one parent from sharing their own childhood faith with their kids in a meaningful way. We intend to raise our own children as Jews, but I also want them to have a sense of respect and knowledge of my own religion.
Read Cautiously.......2000-09-07
This book does seem to be controversial on the interfaith parenting subject and I would advise readers to read it with caution. I believe these book reviews should NOT be a platform for personal vendettas so I will try to give my objective opinion on this book. While this book is groundbreaking in its relevance to the interfaith parenting issue, I feel it is somewhat wishy-washy in its presentation of how to raise a child in both religions. There appears to be no clear-cut answers in this book for those of us who struggle with how to raise our children. Indeed, while the authors have good intentions, it seems their parenting philosophy is unclear and I am afraid they don't make a very strong case for raising children in a hodge-podge of both Judaism and Christianity with no strong identity in either religion. I would rather recommend two excellent books that include this subject: The Interfaith Family Guidebook by Joan Hawxhurst and The Intermarriage Handbook by Judy Petsonk. Both of these books give very practical, fair, and clear advice on interfaith families and then let you decide on what you wish to integrate into your life.

fair, intelligent and perceptive.......2004-05-08
Mark Little was an Irish TV correspondent in D.C. for several years. If his reporting was as good as this book, he's sure to enjoy more success.
I admit that I'm a sucker for a great first chapter title. Thus, when I opened this book in an Irish bookstore and saw: Chapter One--The Potato-Sucking Moron, Little had my attention. He never lost it. He lived long enough in the United States to come to know us perhaps better than we know ourselves.
The problem with European authors writing about us, Americans that is, is not that they're usually wrong. We usually deserve whatever lumps we get. The real consistent problem with Eurowriting about the USA is that the Eurowriter tends to hypocrisy--to fail to also see our strengths and his or her own nation's weaknesses. Being lectured about our violent, racist society rings pretty hollow from the continent that birthed two horrific world wars and even now faces extreme-right nationalist movements that promote xenophobia.
That's what I like best about Little: he does not roll the same tired old gutterball. His observations about politics, society, commerce and climate are all tempered with balance and no small amount of wit. A case in point is his inside look at the latter days of the Gore 2000 presidential campaign: the marketing focus, the cynicism, the utter absence of actual principles and ideas. For my money, he summarized the faults with our current political climate better than any American has yet done.
_Turn Left at Greenland_ is a worthy purchase. Special-order it if you have to.
