All clinician-scientist as well as lay people in
their right mind believe in evidence base medicine
This kind of lay discussion on 'exercises' without
detailed recourse to evidence, nor comparison between
different exercise programs, and omission of a decent
discussion of the causes of back pain as well as
elementary stuff like red flags make this book

What works?.......2006-03-10

Picked this book up with a few other to gain more information on my on and off again back problems. You know how it is if you are thinking of getting this type of book. You went to all the doctors in your town and tried all the exercises they give you to do on the floor. I even spent thousands on massage therapy, a that helped for a while. But every time I went to exercise my back would hurt again. Well this is the year, I am not getting any younger, so I bought a collection of books over the last month and this is one of them i recommend for people who are tired of thier pain and want to do something about it. The other books are on exercises that have helped me very much and I am not running out of exercises to do.Good luck, hope this helps

If you need to start somewhere then this book will help you to exercise away your pain. If you already workout then this book will not give you the type of workout to improve your condition. This was given to me as a gift and I did pick up a few good pointers.

OK but not really professional.......2006-01-20

I have read book about backache before this one "Backache : home treatment and prevention" by Homola, Samuel. That book was better for backache understanding.
Anyway, I do agree that exercises are good and practical way to get rid of your backache. And I have good experience and knowledge of exercises in general. However, if this is not first book on back exercises you are going to read, I recommend you to read more professional book.
In summary, good for begginer, but too simple if you are looking for professional book on exercises.

Full of Common Sense and Good Suggestions.......2005-10-10

This book was a god-send to my family, for both my mother and husband have recently been suffering from back pain.

The "magic bullet" for back pain is to exercise. The authors argue that to cure and prevent future back pain, we should all exercise our abdominal muscles every day.

The exercises they suggest, which are tailor-made for every condition, are very easy to do, even for those of us who are not very active. The easiest one for most of us, is to lie on the floor with your knees drawn up and lift your pelvis towards the ceiling. (This is called the "bridge pose" in yoga). But if you are reading this, and thinking to yourself "I could never do that", the authors have even simpler exercises, including those that you can do while lying in bed.

For fit and active people, the best way to prevent back pain is to do yoga, ballet, belly-dancing or pilates; in fact any kind of exercise that gets you to tone your abdominals. As you can see from this list, there are lots of fun ways to prevent back pain!

This book is a must-read for those of us who are suffering, and I highly recommend it.

This book is a great find, with a well balanced number of different types of recipes. You will find a little bit of everything in here. I was amazed to see the quantity of really good recipes. Many times in collections you find a lot of misses, not in this one.

The book was a collection of stories, breeding history of Champion dogs and photographs of American Champions. The collection of photographs includes photos from a great number of breeders, but it does not include all champions for the era covered. The book does however provide the reader with a large sample collection of what a Sealyham Champion looks like, and therefore serves as a resentative sample. Some of the Sealys in this book are wonderful, good, average and poor. Nevertheless, the pictures provide a fair sample and range of various Sealyham looks. This book is a good pictorial introduction to the breed.

If I could rate this book lower that 1 star, I would...............2006-04-26

This book is certainly not for quilters nor is it for those who love to paint with Donna Dewberry, either. From a quilting perspective, the book is useless. The process of quilting is not dealt with at all. The project instructions are too vague for a beginner and the projects too simple and boring for a quilter or a sewer. The book provides general instructions for making simple, pieced throws, pillows, bedding items, etc. using Donna's newly marketed fabric designs. Donna's fabric designs, patterned after her flower and nature painting, are indeed very pretty, but all but impossible to find at fabric stores. The pictures of the projects are cute and colorful, but without using Donna's fabrics, are just pieced throws, pillows, and bedding. In my opinion, this book is nice to look through, but useless to actually use in making quilted projects.

A Great Production Book.......2003-08-20

This book is written with commercial operations in mind--either retailers putting together container gardens or wholesalers managing production of pots and baskets. The 60 "recipes" are great ideas for professional and home gardeners, but the information is aimed at the business side of containers. Plants suggested to be used are liners, and usually not the 4" or 6" pots most gardeners use. Plant and material costs listed in the book are wholesale, as is the suggested price to sell the completed container. The pictures are great, and the planting diagrams make it a snap to design and plant beautiful and creative pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. If you're using this just for your home, you might be happier with Contain Yourself, the author's book on pots and baskets for the home gardener. If you're looking for more ideas or want to make money with container gardens, this is the book for you.

A Great Production Book.......2003-08-20

While THE EURO-AMERICAN CONTAINER GARDEN COOKBOOK may sound appealing to the average cook and gardener, this book is not what you might imagine. Instead of the home gardener like me growing a few pots of vegetables and herbs on the back patio, the target audience for this book is the commercial grower who is trying to sell her wares to thousands on Mother's Day. Although the book description relies on food metaphors such as "a dash of creativity" and "ingredients" and "recipes", nary an onion or carrot makes an appearance. Instead, the reader will find pages of diagrams showing one how to construct container planters, window boxes, and hanging baskets filled with annuals. This is petunia city with a few marigolds thrown in for sport.

Although the average gardener is not about to become a merchandiser overnight, there are some interesting insights. For example, did you have a clue that the lovely hanging basket you bought your mom last May probably held less than ten dollars worth of plants although you paid $35 dollars for it? Depending on where you live the cost will be more or less. You might decide you want to create your own hanging baskets or window boxes after you discover the markup. If so, you can follow the diagrams offered in this book, or you could buy a really pretty book on container gardening such as Joyce Fingerhut's award winning (American Horticultural Society Book Award) CREATING AND PLANTING GARDEN TROUGHS, or if you are interested in growing food in containers check out the BOUNTIFUL CONTAINER by McGee and Stuckey.

My entire family enjoys reading Bill's columns, when we are together, someone will always read the newspaper aloud. The stories are so funny, and the same craziness that goes on in EVERYONE'S family. I purchased this book, used, as a gift for my Dad, but of course I had to read it FIRST. Hysterical (I actually read excerpts aloud to my Mom on the telephone) Thanks Bill, your outlook on life is SO appreciated!

Become A Wiseguy.......2000-08-11

"Some Kind of Wiseguy" is about an Italian guy's life in the New York-New Jersey area. He grew up with sausage and peppers, overbearing parents, card games, and NOISE. Just like I did. I'm a third generation Italian American kid and I spent a lot of my childhood at my grandparents' house where I was taught Italian culture and how to brace yourself for a 10-type-of-fish Christmas Eve dinner feast. Zeppoles, homemade pizza, and salami bread are still eaten in my home today as well as my Mom's homemade meat gravy every Sunday afternoon. Bill touches upon all of these subjects as well as getting into the journalism field and how he decided to write all about his life. I made an autobiography myself about my life up until this point which I hope gets published one day. Ervolino remains my favorite modern writer. He is hilarious, insightful, and a very easy read. Check out his Sunday and Thursday columns in The Bergen Record of NJ. I also strongly reccommend "Wiseguy: My Life in a Mafia Family," by Nicholas Pileggi.

I am an avid reader of Bill's newspaper columns, and have always found him to be very funny! This book DOES make you laugh out loud. I'm from an Italian-American family, and relate to a lot of the topics in the book directed at those of Italian heritage, however, the book is just so very funny, that I think ANYONE would find it very enjoyable!

Late one night in 1963, a South African police unit surrounded the African National Congress headquarters in Rivonia and arrested a group of party leaders gathered inside. Eight of them, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Dennis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Motsaledi, Andrew Mlangeni, and Ahmed Kathrada, were convicted of sabotage and, on 11 June 1964, sentenced to life in prison. Soon, these men became widely known as the 'Rivonia Trialists.' Despite their imprisonment, the Trialists played active roles in the struggle against South Africa's racist regime. Instead of being forgotten, as apartheid officials had hoped, they became enduring symbols in a struggle against injustice and racism. Kathrada and his colleagues were classified as high security prisoners, segregated from others and closely watched. Every activity was regulated and monitored. Among the many indignities visited upon them, the prisoners were prohibited from keeping copies of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Kathrada, or 'Kathy' as he became known, successfully hid both. Letters from Robben Island contains a selection of 86 of the more than 900 pieces of correspondence Ahmed Kathrada wrote during his 26 years on Robben Island and at Pollsmoor Prison. Some were smuggled out by friends; others were written in code to hide meaning and content from prison censors. These are among his most poignant, touching, and eloquent communications. They are testimonials to Kathrada, to his colleagues, and to their commitment to obtaining human dignity and freedom for all South Africans.

This collection of letters, by one of South Africa's leading activists, offers a direct view of the experience of a political prisoner during apartheid. Written during the author's 26 years in prison, alongside Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, the books grants the reader the rare chance to grasp the daily hardships these men endured. And yet, given Kathrada's courage, humility and humor, as well as their ultimate political victory, the book is a source of inspiration and hope.

Review of the Life of Ireland's Best Stained Glass Artist.......2001-01-21

When I got this book as a gift from my brother-in-law's mother, who lives in Ireland, I thought that is was going to be a boring autobiography on some unknown artist. Of course, I was totally wrong. In all,I have read this book about 7 times, and I never cease to tire of it. It has complete info of this man's life, and in between it gives beautiful illustrations and stories of his stained glass art. I was taken away, and I still can't believe the great care this man has taken to create, out of his own hands, these masterpieces. This book has even gave me the want to go to these churches and see firsthand what Harry Clarke made. I totally urge to read this book, and you will treasure it as I do and will forever.
