Book Description
Adds to our knowledge of the great events, major actors, and social effects of the American Revolution
Complements existing scholarship about the hardships of a seafaring life and the origins of the antebellum seamen's religious movement
Recounts Prince's narrow escapes from death and capture, his travails as a prisoner, and his financial gains and losses as a result of the war
Reveals previously unknown details about a joint Indian and British attack on American positions outside Montreal, Ethan Allen's imprisonment, and the treatment of smallpox
In 1806, when retired sea captain and religious activist Christopher Prince (1751-1832) began to write his life's story, he wanted simply to leave his family a record of his experiences. Today, his autobiography survives as one of the extremely rare participants' accounts of seafaring during the American Revolution. As a literary work, it shares characteristics of three genresthe war story, the captivity narrative, and the spiritual autobiography. Prince tells what it was like to grow up in a seaport town in colonial Massachusetts, why a boy would choose a seafaring life, of the hardships of fishing on the Grand Banks, and of the education of a merchant seaman. The core of the autobiography, however, constitutes Prince's adventures and exploits during the American Revolution, on board both British and American ships, as a naval enlisted man, as an officer of privateers, and as a master of merchantmen. It ends with an account of his religious conversion and its transforming effect on his life as a merchant sea captain after American Independence had been secured. The book is served well by the editor, Michael J. Crawford, who provides introductions and contexts, commentary, notes, appendixes, and a glossary. Prince and Crawford together make an important contribution to American naval and maritime history.

Masterful!.......2003-10-04
This is a masterfully written book by Christopher Prince. 1n 1803 Captain Prince sat down to write his autobiography for the future generations of the Princes' family. He never intended to have it published. Prince was a sea captain that helped the British during the American Revolution. He truly had no choice in the matter after the ship that sailed on was captured by the King's Royal Navy. He was in the service of the King until he was released. After his freedom was obtained, he began to assist the Patriot cause. Do not let this give the wrong impression of Captain Prince, he knew where he stood on the issues, as I brought up before, he was held a prisoner and had no choice but to obey his captives. The book is very well written and highly interesting. What truly made this an interesting book is Prince frequent reliance on Christ. He relates his conversion to Christ at the end of the book. It took two hundred years to finally be published in book form. One other book on the subject of the American Revolution is Joseph Plumb Martin's book Private Yankee Doodle. This book may be even more enjoyable than Prince's book.
wonderful!.......2003-04-18
In 1803 Christopher Prince sat down to write his autobiography for the second generation of his family. Little did he realize tat four hundred years later this book would bee reprinted and sold to hundreds, if not thousands of people! The Autobiography of a Yankee Mariner edited by Michael Crawford is the first had account of a man that witnessed the famous events that marked the American Revolution. Prince served as a captain of a British prison ship that during the invasion of Canada, the years 1774-1776, he also changed sides and helped the patriots in the years 1776-1777.
The Prince documents were donated to the Naval Historical Center in 1943.
Prince's history is very interesting, perhaps it is because this really is the first time anyone has ever seen it.

Above All, Be Kind teaches parents how to raise their children to be humane in the broadest sense -- to become not only more compassionate in their interactions with family and friends, but to grow up to make life choices that demonstrate respect for the environment, other species, and all people. The book includes chapters for early, middle, teenage, and young adult years, as well as activities, issue sidebars, cases, tips, and profiles.

A Thought Provoking Call to Act Humanely.......2006-07-10
This is actually my second time reading this book. The first time through, I was primarily looking for ideas to make my household a bit more peaceful, and while I found the book interesting, it didn't address my specific concerns about sibling rivalry and bickering.
Fast forward a couple of years, and this book is EXACTLY what I need. The idea of trying to live humanely and kindly, each and every day, and to extend the concept beyond one's nuclear family to the world at large (and to all living things for that matter), really resonates right now. Zoe Weil talks about the importance of our actions. Having a sense of compassion combined with a sense that our actions DON'T matter can lead to dispair. Having a sense of materialism combined with a sense that our actions don't matter can lead to exploitation of people and resources.
Anyway, the book does discuss how to empower children to consciously choose humane, compassionate choices. Zoe's approach is highly facilitative rather than dictatorial. She says it is important to:
1. provide information
2. teach critical thinking
3. instill reverence, respect, and responsibility
4. offer positive choices
And there are many examples of how to put this in practice, particularly for children in the middle and teen years.
One of my favorite chapters is chapter 3, "Your Life is Your Message". Zoe says, "I'm very aware of the fact that each of us will be faced with emotions and circumstances that compete with our desire to make the most humane choices." She talks about how difficult it is to be a good role model for our children ALL the time. We will fail - we're human! But she writes, "the task before each of us is to choose compassion in the face of apathy that deadens our spirit, restraint in the face of desires that can harm, and courage in the face of fears that hold us back - and to do so in practical, concrete ways that translate our ethics into action. We will not always make the kindest choice, but by staying aware and remaining committed to making our life the kind of message we want it to be, we'll be able to make kinder choices more and more often."
THIS is something that I can do. The fact I will fail sometimes doesn't absolve me of my responsibility to do what I can.
Chapter 3 is also where Zoe exhorts us to expand humane values to include everyone, and these are some choices she says have an impact on ourselves as well as others outside of our family - what we wear, what we eat, what entertainment we choose, what we drive, as well as choices about our homes, furniture, toys, personal care and cleaning products, among others. I'd been guilty of thinking, "Such and Such Superstore will still exist whether I shop there or not, so I might as well get xyz there because they have the best price." After reading this book, that is not a thought I am going to have again.
Zoe also includes a questionnaire to help people get started on their journey to live more consciously and humanely, as well as several interesting resource lists.
I highly recommend this book.
A book that tells you that parenting is about YOU.......2004-06-19
Many school teachers will tell you that parents will complain to them that their children don't read at home. The teacher then always asks, 'well, how much do you read?' And the answer usually comes back, 'I don't. What does that have to do with it?' Our children do follow our models, whether we think they do or not. And to really provide a good role model requires hard, hard work, and thinking about it, every day, every second. Instead, we all have a tendency to mouth platitudes and give lectures.
A great read, worth it for any parent, and really, anyone else. This goes way beyond education and raising kids.
More than just a one-time read!.......2004-03-25
It's not an easy task to raise compassionate, non-materialistic, and socially conscious children in today's prevailing culture. Above All, Be Kind is a guidebook for parents trying to do just that.
Author Zoe Weil is the co-founder of the International Institute for Humane Education, an organization that teaches young people about more humane ways of living and about how our daily choices impact the world for ill or good. She says living in humane ways is all about living up to the highest human qualities.
Weil gives examples of situations parents will likely encounter with their children ("What do you do when your son asks for a toy gun?" "What do you do when you find pornography in your teen's room?") and how parents can handle those situations with wisdom.
In segments called "Did you know?" she reveals disturbing facts about hot button social issues such as factory farming, sweatshop clothing, and child-targeted advertising. Besides documenting the facts about those issues, Weil takes the process a step further with pages called "Let Kindness Grow," which offer suggestions about what we can do to make more humane choices in relation to each issue.
The most important message in the book is to parents themselves. It is the mantra "My life is my message," which Weil says she has used many times to check her own behavior. The Ghandian quote reminds parents that we cannot expect our children to walk any path that we ourselves are not willing or able to walk.
To that end, Weil lays out a four-step plan she calls the "Four Elements" that can help readers come to a right action for themselves or help their children make about any choice. Essentially, the Four Elements are: Gathering information, using critical thinking skills, turning that knowledge into respect for all, and making a responsible choice.
One of the last parts of the book is dedicated to personal introspection. Weil created a "My life is my message" questionnaire that readers are to work through to critically look at where we can improve our own life messages. The 13-page exercise is a humbling and valuable experience.
Weil provides an appendix bursting with solid statistics, valuable reference books, and tons of resources to help parents locate more information, better products (such as a list of companies that do not use animals to test products) and websites that can help us make more humane choices for ourselves, our children, and the world. As a result, this book is not a one-time read but rather a resource to be picked up time and again. --Dana Anderson-Villamagna
A book that makes a difference.......2004-01-05
"Above All Be Kind" is a wonderful book for anybody who cares deeply about the future of our children. Being a teacher myself I would like to recommend this book as a must read for teachers and parents alike. The book reminds us what is really important in life. It invites us to raise our children to become compassionate and caring people who understand and welcome their responsibility for our Earth and all living beings.
Couldn't put the book down!.......2003-12-24
This book was incredibly thought-provoking and practical. Weil has an extremely positive energy that eminates through the pages of this book.
Whether you possess little to great concern about the upbringing of your children, this book has something for everyone!
I wanted the book to be longer because I enjoyed it so much. When is the sequel coming out?!

My Favorite.......2006-12-25
My Grandmother gave this to me when I was 15 years old as my first "grown-up cookbook". It essentially taught me how to cook. The pictures were so helpful and the instructions very easy to follow. I have used it for years and still refer to it from time to time. My daughter has begged me to give it to her but I have always declined. I just bought her a used copy from Amazon that was amazingly like new and she declared it as her favorite gift this year!
please reprint!!!.......2006-07-30
I loved this book as a young woman--I learned to cook using it 25 years ago. I am now looking for a copy for my 22-year old daughter. Wish they would update it and publish it again!!

A must read for all pet lovers !!!!.......2001-04-22
I have followed a natural diet with my 5 dogs for a year now, and I have seen SO MUCH improvement in all of them; even the 12 year old with his awfull allergies. NO MORE AWFULL DOGGIE SMELL, no more fleas (and I live in Florida), and beautiful shinny coats. I even include the onions, with NO bad reactions. My vet is amazed at how healthy all the dogs are.
Use caution........2000-04-19
Informative and well written book. But, use caution when making recipes for your dog that include onions. Onions are toxic to dogs!

Good Book.......2007-02-23
When I first got this book, I was a bit fooled by the thin size but it has a great store of information in the thin size. Highly recommended for anyone that wants to learn more about making bows, arrows, and equipment the old way
Native American Know How.......2007-01-11
This is a very detailed book on how to make authentic Native American Bows & Arrows, and it's very easy to understand.
Informative.......2005-08-25
Informative book, pretty deep insight into how NA bows and arrows were made, used, decorated, etc. Some good photos, descriptions, worth the money and read. I keep mine for reference, as it has loads of specific info in the book. Advanced bowyers would likely not like the book, folks who are just starting or want to learn the NA way that these things were done will like it.
Thank you for the criticism.......2003-01-27
I'm the author of the book, and appreciate the criticisms and praises. I *would* like to let folks know that I wrote this book when I was 19 years young, and had a lot to learn. I wrote it in response to a very bad, and misinformative book that was considered the 'bible' of indigenous archery books at the time. Now, there are many books available on this wonderful subject.
Jim Hamm's book, video, and classes are invaluable. So is TM Hamilton's book, and DC Waldorf as well.
Don't miss my "Voices of Native America" music book as well.
arrows are included !.......2002-10-03
The other title of the same author "making arrows the old way" has its text already fully printed within "making indian bows and arrows the old way". Amazon gave me a discount so I could get both titles at once, and I end up having twice the same text and pictures on arrows... Do not do like me, buy only this title, not the arrow one. Nice book by the way...

Book Description
The Chteau de Resenlieu is the third recently discovered autobiographical work by Lord Berners, and contains some of his most beautiful writing. It is published here for the very first time. The book finds Lord Berners leaving England for the Chteau de Resenlieu in Normandy in 1900, as a first towards preparing himself for the Diplomatic Service. From his hilarious depictions of both English and French inhabitants of the chteau, to his exquisite renderings of the countryside, Lord Berners evokes the place where, released from the constraints of school and home life, he regained the freedom of childhood. A book about early enchantments in life written from the vantage point of experience by a master stylist, The Chteau de Resenlieu transcribes the vanished surface of things.
Customer Reviews:
A feast for Anglophiles!.......2001-01-20
The talented and benignly eccentric Lord Berners wrote music, painted pictures, became a British diplomat, and developed an extraordinary writing style filled with wit, irony, and clarity of expression. I recommend listening to his ballet scores and his incidental music to a 1947 motion picture of "Nicolas Nickleby," but I also urge Anglophiles and lovers of British literature to read this slender and delightful volume of memoirs. The time is 1900, when, as Lord Berners writes, "international war still seemed a remote menace, and there were no passports." Gerald Tyrwhitt - for that was his name until he assumed Lordship in 1918 - has left Eton and is now preparing for a career in the British diplomatic service by visiting France for a year to perfect his faulty French, and to savor the culture of Europe. He is also experiencing complete freedom from academic and maternal control for the first time, encountering a late adolescent sexual awakening, and developing an artistic vision that will be the basis of his later creative life. In France he stays with an extraordinary woman, Madame O'Kerrins, the widow of a French-naturalized Irishman, who takes in British borders to support the Château de Résenlieu. The book documents his year's stay with Madame O'Kerrins and a few of her relatives and borders, and reveals the excitement and joy that a seventeen-year old British aristocrat feels when he confronts that totally different culture of provincial France. Written with the care and perception that is characteristic of Lord Berners' work, the book explores the changes that take place within the author. For example, Lord Berners explains his turning away from the heaviness of Romanticism and the overbearing denseness of Wagner's music and adopting the lighter, more impressionistic feelings of French music and art. These impressions, I believe, were solidified during this period and lasted his entire life. His music indeed sounds more like Satie than Wagner, and the lightness of his later work is influenced by the French. His perceptions of the people he meets and his descriptions of the provincial town of Gacé are beautifully written. His prose moves lovingly over each page, and his account of falling in love for the first time in his life with Mademoiselle Henriette is extremely poignant. I heartily recommend this short memoir by Lord Berners, for I am certain the reader, like myself, will be encouraged to explore his other works. In fact, I am beginning his "Collected Tales of Fantasies" as soon as I post this review!
Book Description
A publishing phenomenon in hardcover, Roy Keane's autobiography was the biggest selling sports book of the year. Now in paperback it includes a new chapter covering Keane's vindication by the FAI report, and the punishment meted out by the FA and Mick McCarthy's resignation. Brilliantly reviewed, Roy Keane's riveting, brutally honest autobiography has the potential to be one of the year's biggest paperback bestsellers.
Customer Reviews:
KEANO! KEANO!.......2007-06-28
I could not put this book down, well written and a great insight into the heart of a true Manchester United warrior.
More Keane.......2007-03-06
Having followed football for a few years and being familar with Mr. Keane's antics on and off the pitch, I thought this was going to be a little more entertaining. It was a very good read, but I can't imagine the author is this drab. He is an Irishman!
Honest Account........2006-07-19
I like Manchester United and Keane so am biased, but this is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in what goes on behind the scenes and United and in the thoughts of someone whose behavior has been so "interesting" over the years. Keane gives a "warts and all" description of his career and behavior.
Tell it Like it Is, But Tell More !!.......2006-05-09
I like Roy Keane..He is direct, explosive and successful without possessing the sublime skills of Best or Cantona. The book is written in the same direct style as his playing. He tells it straight but is lacking in detail. You get a glimpse of the man without really ever getting inside his head. He shares the highs and lows (and even his first salary with Man. Utd.)...but lacks the capacity to captivate the reader like a good biography should. Most of what is in here, you already know...Interesting glimpses of life as a successful sportsperson but lacking the cutting edge that he delivers on the football pitch...
Direct, like Keano plays!.......2005-08-24
This book is a candid look inside Roy Keane's thoughts. He freely shares what he thinks about the game, opposing players, teamates, and many other subjects.
Keane has been criticized for writing this book because he is blunt in his assesments of people and situations. However, this is the strength of the book, because if Keane had watered it down to be "PC," then the reader wouldn't hear what Keane really thinks.
Nobody will agree with all of Keane's thoughts, that is a given, but it is interesting to see his development as a player and person. This book provides the football fan with a glimpse into the mind of a superstar, and whether you like Roy Keane or not, it is a very good read that is enjoyable and insightful.

Book Description
2002 was the year of Roy Keane, if not exactly Roy Keane's year. Banished from Ireland's World Cup squad and then suspended by the English FA after comments in his best-selling autobiography, the Manchester United and Ireland captain was seldom out of the news. Red Mist is Conor O'Callaghan's memoir of the year when an Irish hero was arraigned in the court of public opinion—argued about in bars and across shop counters, debated by the media, and surrounded by a torrent of rumours. From the drawings of O'Callaghan's football-mad seven-year-old son and the mysterious disappearance of his rag doll Mr, Roy Keane that summer, to eavesdropped conversations and tirades on websites, this is a passionate exploration of celebrity, temperament, one-all victories, Saipan, the World Cup, and national aspiration.

Fail to Prepare - Prepare to Fail.......2005-01-16
In 2002, soccer's World Cup Finals were played in Japan and South Korea. Following a two-year qualifying campaign, thirty-two countries were involved. While countries such as Brazil and France were among the pre-tournament favorites, the Republic of Ireland had qualified for only the third time in their history.
Ireland's team captain leading up to the finals was Roy Keane, considered by many to be the country's greatest ever player. While soccer is a team sport, Ireland simply wouldn't have been capable of qualifying for the Finals without him. Keane, like all the other members of Ireland's squad, has spent the bulk of his playing career in England - where he has won the Premiership and the F.A. Cup (English soccer's top competitions) several times. He also has a winners medal from the Champions League (Europe's top competition) in his collection. A very focused and determined player, he believes it is necessary to train, eat and rest properly to perform at the highest level.
The events that led up to the World Cup Finals that year, however, must have left him feeling disillusioned with the international set-up. The FAI (the organisation in charge of Irish soccer) had decided that Saipan would be used as the pre-tournament base. After all, it had a very nice hotel. Unfortunately, the team arrived to discover the FAI had brought no soccer balls or training gear - which made training a little difficult. Furthermore, Keane, as captain, wasn't too impressed with the attitude of some of his team-mates; there have been suggestions of late nights and heavy drinking (and I don't mean isotonic fluids). Furthermore, when the training equipment finally arrived, he was unhappy that some were allowed to skip the scheduled training sessions. Keane's anger at what was happening around him led to a huge argument with the squad's coach, Mick McCarthy. It seems that McCarthy found Keane's attitude unacceptable and reservations without foundation; as a result, he dismissed Keane from the squad and sent him home.
The story was huge, and Ireland was divided. A large part of the Irish population bizarrely agreed with McCarthy. Vilified by many in the media, Keane was labelled a traitor. Some made claims about what he'd said to McCarthy. He denied making the most controversial remark, a denial supported by Niall Quinn - another player who'd actually backed McCarthy's position. Keane, however, did have his supporters - among them, the population of Cork City and Conor O'Callaghan. In this book, O'Callaghan looks back to the events of Saipan, the reaction of the Irish people and its effect on him. He was involved in any number of arguments defending Keane - his barber was one of his favorite sparring partners - while the situation left his seven-year-old son thoroughly confused. Like Steve Staunton - who was appointed Ireland's captain after Keane was dismissed - O'Callaghan was brought up in Dundalk. Staunton was another player who'd backed McCarthy at a press conference. One of the funniest incidents takes place at a street party after his neighbour returned home - O'Callaghan made sure his neighbour knew not everyone was happy with his role.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but I'd imagine it has a limited appeal. There'd need to be some interest in soccer, and it will mean more if the reader followed the 2002 World Cup. (Having said that, it probably won't be enjoyed so much by those who supported Mick McCarthy). If you're interested, other books that cover the events of Saipan include "Laptop Dancing and the Nanny Goat Mambo: A Sports Writer's Year" by Tom Humphries and the autobiographies of Niall Quinn and Roy Keane.

Keano - one of the very best!.......2003-02-01
Roy Keane is undoubtably one of the greatest football players currently playing, and his life outside the game is equally enjoyable to follow. His intensity and larger-than-life persona on and off the pitch make any bio of Keano worth a read.
Pure Tightness.......2003-01-30
This is the best book I've ever read. It tells all about Captain Tightness. This is a more choice novel than Catcher in the rye. Roy Keane is a better role model than Holden Caulfield ever was. Captain Tightness will teach you and your kids how to cleat the opponent without getting caught (or carded ha ha ha).
Thug-life.......2002-11-20
It's disturbing that the activities of Keane are dressed up into something that in other circumstances would be described as thuggery. AVOID.
