I was disappointed when my book arrived. I was not prepared for a pre-teen book on Thomas Sumter. But, I do think it is a must have for every South Carolinian and Gamecock fan. It is obviously easy reading. Even for a 6 year old. Some facts, but mostly an overview of the man, the myth, the legend.

What separates THIS book from any other Carolina recipe collections are the generous helpings of Alex Hawkins' sarcasm and his irreverent humor. Appetizers, desserts, main dishes--they're all in here. The recipes were supplied not only by various luminaries and Alex' wife, Charlie, but also by the not-so-famous who make football tailgating at the University of South Carolina a time-honored tradition every fall, regardless (thankfully) of how well the team is performing on the field. Undoubtedly one of the best Gamecock books ever.

An Essential Resource.......2004-11-06

If you are the parent of a teen who is having developmental problems of any sort, then you need this book. This book takes the essence of Choice Theory and applies it to the relationship between teens and their parents. The book consists of a number of case studies featuring the stories of typical young adults with all different sorts of problems ranging from anorexia to poor performance in school. As he is relating the story behind each case, the author will frequently turn to a brief discussion of various facets of his Choice Theory and how they apply to the case at hand.

Glasser's enlightened discussion of the Quality World concept of Choice Theory is central to the book, and how this applies to the teen's relationship with his/her parents. Coupled with this are discussions of the concepts of control and choice. Relinquishing one's control over a teen, and gently guiding them toward making better choices is another common theme running through these case studies.

My advice is, if you have a teen, or young adult, and you are experiencing some turbulence (and who does not?), buy this book, read it, underline the passages that strike you as most important (there are many), then keep this book at your side, within reaching distance, as you navigate these years. It is well worth it to be able to reach for this book in times of trouble, when your relationship with your teen or young adult seems to be deteriorating, to open a page at random, and just read. Very often, you will encounter an extremely important insight that can guide you forward.

The techniques in this book are so painstakingly explained with text and photos that it's almost as if the authors are looking over your shoulder as you work. The reader will notice many extra tips and suggestions along the way in margins, charts, stylized boxes or picture captions. One feature called "Masterstroke" contains ideas for one a bit more advanced or ambitious.

Mastering Fine Decorative Paint Techniques might be a bit overwhelming for someone who's never tried any of the techniques. It's probably better suited for someone who's done some experimentation with these techniques previously. This is not a book for someone who just wants to sponge a jewelry box or closet wall. At the other end of the spectrum, even an advanced painter should find things of interest here to help him/her fine-tune some techniques.

I bought this book in preparation for painting rooms in our first home. Having always rented, I didn't know what all was required in preparing your surface or how to choose the proper application tools. This book started from the beginning and included these topics. The examples throughout the book are marvelous and the directions for achieving such great effects, as stenciling, colorwashing, stippling, sponging, ragging, etc. are easy to understand. The instructions also include applying the these techniques to not only walls, but objects like picture frames, candlesticks and furniture if appropriate. A must have for anyone who is redocorating their home and wants to stretch their budget a little further by using paint techniques.

I am a professional faux finisher/muralist, and I really enjoyed this book. I have literally dozens of books on decorative painting techniques, and this is one of my favorites. It's like an encyclopedia- lots of different techniques explained very clearly, with good general info. If you're not sure what type of finish you're looking for, this would be a good book to invest in. Also has a good color reference for help on mixing your own paint colors. Another nice feature is that there are finishes in both water and oil based paints. Some Faux books only deal with oils, which i personally don't like to work with because of the smell and clean-up, etc... If you're looking for a more advanced book, I'd suggest "The Art of Faux" by Pierre Finkelstein.

I am currently reading this book as I prepare to redecorate my home using painting techiques. This book is excellant in the volume of information it contains from a discussion of colors, paints, glazes, brushes, and tools to specific techniques such as sponging, ragging, stippling, color washing, etc. I found the contents to be very specific yet simple enough for a beginner like me. The best feature however is the variety of color pictures that accompany each topic. Once I have mastered the simpler techniques, this book will allow me to move on to the more advanced techniques which are also included. Happy painting!

I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

Did I miss something?.......2004-11-08

This book includes just about everything one needs to know to learn about sleep disorders. It allows you to test yourself at home and explains all of the different "treatments" available. However, none of those treatments boasted any substantial cure rate. The subtitle of the book "A Proven program for conquering snoring and sleep apnea" makes me ask the question "What is the program? Did I miss something?"

His book "No More Snoring," coauthored with distinguished medical writer Shirley Linde, PhD, covers all that a layman need know about the subject. It is well organized and written to be an easy read. It is accurate and reliable in all areas except treatment with oral appliances.

The information on oral appliances is inaccurate and misleading. For example they classify the Nocturnal Airway Patency Appliance (NAPA) as a tongue retaining device (TRD), which tugs on the tongue all night, and many patients find uncomfortable. The NAPA is definitely not a TRD. It is a mandibular advancement appliance (MAA), which most patients find much more comfortable to wear and more effective.

Then they say the first MAA was used in Germany in 1986. A 1985 report in the New England Journal of Medicine described how a NAPA had reduced the number of stopped-breathing episodes in a middle aged man from 79 per hour to 5 per hour.

As a very important aside, the above mentioned patient received his first NAPA in Honolulu in 1983 and has been wearing one nearly every night for over 17 years.

The image of the great artist as a suffering visionary is a recent invention, observes sociologist Nathalie Heinich--an invention rooted in the "canonization" of Vincent van Gogh as a cultural hero for the twentieth century. Heinich explores how and why the impoverished and mentally tormented van Gogh came to be glorified shortly after his suicide at the age of 37. Did the secular art world need a rebel-saint of its own? In considering this possibility, the author explores the history of efforts to celebrate van Gogh, whether in biographies or on T-shirts, showing how the details of his life have been constructed according to the pattern of a Christian saint's rise to recognition. These biographical details circulated first as anecdotes, then as historical truths, and finally became legendary motifs defining individual greatness.

At the time of van Gogh's death, early modernists hailed the work of this self-taught painter as that of a reforming prophet. Public interest stirred when the unique and tragic aspects of the artist's personal life came to light. In these stories, the figure of Van Gogh oscillated between godlike asceticism (he lived on very little, did not get married, did not eat much, and devoted his life to his work) and demonic frenzy (he drank, he went to brothels, and offered a piece of his own flesh, his severed ear, to a prostitute). His legend became one of victim and sacrificer, of an accursed artist who gave the world great paintings but paid the heavy price of society's ignorance.

Heinich organizes her book around the stages that characterize the life of a saint-deviation, renewal, reconciliation, and pilgrimage, the latter culminating in visits to van Gogh's burial site and the competition to buy his paintings or "relics." Heinich explores the economics of the art market and the themes that make up the van Gogh myth, such as the personalization of artistic grandeur, the celebration of the interiority of the creator, and the glorification of abnormality. By examining the mythology that helps drive artistic investment, she forces us to reconsider the nature of admiration and particularly the notion that obscurity during an artist's lifetime is a guarantee of true genius.

Written with a voice and tone of a purist this anthology delves into the social, theological and psychological effect that this man and his work had on the world of art and the world. Appreciated most by those with a strong vocabulary. Well worth it...

Truly wonderful..........2000-08-19

First time author Mary Costello has written what can only be described as a truly wonderful book. It is the story of Annie McPhelimy's coming of age during the height of the northern Irish Troubles. At times uproariously funny and strikingly poignant, the story gives the reader a glimpse into the inner lives of a family as they go about their daily existence in Catholic West Belfast. The characters are multi-dimensional and well rounded and the story is very well presented. The reader cannot help but feel this family's pain, sorrow and anger as they are surrounded by daily acts of violence. The fact that Costello is able to refrain from turning this novel into a political statement regarding this period in northern Irish history is admirable indeed. Anyone who has the slightest interest in Northern Ireland should read this book. You won't soon forget it...
