Book Description
In Borrowed Time decorated Vietnam veteran Charles Kinney picks up where We Were Soldiers leaves off. He tells the compelling story of his year as a combat medic with the renowned 7th Cavalry of the US Army, focusing on C Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 7th.
After the Ia Drang campaign of We Were Soldiers fame, which took place in the Central Highlands of Vietnam in 1965, came the Bong Son I and II campaigns in the coastal plains of South Vietnam in 1966. Kinney gives riveting firsthand accounts of the devastating battle at Landing Zone 4 (rated by the US Army as the 2nd bloodiest battle of the war from 1965- 1972), the triumphant wipeout of an entire North Vietnamese Army battalion at Than Son II, and the tragic ambush of C Company at Tuy Hoa.
In 1970, Kinney volunteered for another tour of duty in Vietnam, returning to work for a year as a senior clinical technician at the 3rd Surgical Hospital at Binh Tuy south of Saigon. There he became the assistant chief wardmaster and oversaw creation of the Army's first drug rehabilitation and detoxification center.
Rather than focusing on facts and figures, body counts, weapons specifications and the like, Kinney's narrative concentrates on the people- the men he lived with, fought with, loved as brothers and lost, those who survived , and those who remain his cherished friends to this day. In doing so, Kinney teaches us unforgettable lessons about courage, fear, love and the human cost of war. These lessons are just as valuable in understanding the world's current armed conflicts as they are in understanding the war in Vietnam.

Book Description
This is the story of a man whose discovery and vision have changed the lives of millions of people throughout the world. Robert Thomsen's biography takes readers through the events of Bill W.'s life, all the while detailing Bill's growing dependence on alcohol. Thomsen writes of the collapse that brought Bill to the verge of death and the luminous instant of insight that saved him. This turning point led Bill to the encounter in 1935 with Dr. Bob and the start of what was to be a new beginning for countless others who despaired of finding rescue and redemption. Every night at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings around the world, a speaker says, "Our stories disclose in a general way what we used to be like, what happened, and what we are like now." This describes the story of Bill W., a stirring spiritual odyssey through the triumph, failure, and rebirth, with vital meaning for men and women everywhere.

Very well written Bio of Bill Wilson.......2007-05-13
I am a long time member of AA, and knew quite a bit about Bill Wilson prior to reading this book. But I have found out so much more than I expected to from the book, and it is very well written. I can recommend this highly to anyone wanting to know more about the man who founded one of the most important organizations of the 20th Century.

readers will be able to perceive a higher power, at work, while they read this biography of Bill Wilson.......2006-12-19
Bill W describes how an extremely motivated, accomplished student, athlete and successful business man, became a hopeless alcoholic, experienced a spiritual miracle, became sober and founded Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill W is well written, with surprisingly detailed insights, into the childhood, psyche, motivations, influences and drives of a fascinating man. The author, Robert Thomsen, obviously performed extensive research, to obtain the extensive biographical information contained in this book. Bill's family history, numerous business successes and failures along with his gradual descent into alcoholism are described along with numerous attempts to control his binge drinking.
The evolution of Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12 steps, from the 10 step Oxford Group are chronicled, almost step by step, along with numerous controversies and dilemmas, confronting the founders as they learned how to work effectively with alcoholics and ensure the spread and perpetuation of their movement. The history of failed attempts to obtain corporate sponsorship for Alcoholics Anonymous and the adoption of AA principles including anonymity, self supporting groups and no opinion on outside issues are well described.
Bill W suffered anxiety, panic attacks, depression and appears to have been hypoglycemic. He ultimately learned how to treat his alcoholism, depression and hypoglycemia nutritionally, with results surpassing his initial spiritual efforts. Would Bill W have become an alcoholic, if he had received adequate treatment for hypoglycemia, depression, and anxiety ? Unfortunately, his attempts to incorporate nutritional, medical and scientific advances into Alcoholics Anonymous were rejected by the International Board of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Bill Wilson was living proof that "No matter how far we have fallen, we can use our experience to help others."
Perhaps most importantly, readers will be able to perceive a higher power, at work, while they read this biography of Bill Wilson, which is also a biography of the 12 step self help movement.

Book Description
"One fine morning I woke up and decided that I was no longer happy with my physique. Although I was overweight, I had gotten along fine and had no health problems. But I suddenly wanted to dress differently, to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane
.But these fashions, modeled by very, very slim boysand not men of my agerequired me to lose at least eighty pounds....I did not think that it was possible to lose so much weight in one year....[But] in fact, it took me exactly thirteen months." (Karl Lagerfeld) The Karl Lagerfeld Diet, developed exclusively for Karl Lagerfeld by Dr. Jean-Claude Houdret, reveals the secret techniques of Lagerfeld's amazing weight loss regimen. By first addressing the mental and behavioral causes of varying degrees of obesity, this book provides valuable insights and useful tips for preparing the mind and developing the willpower necessary to commit to this diet. It then provides one hundred twenty gourmet recipes devised by Dr. Houdret, which cover breakfast, soups, starters and salads, eggs, seafood and fish, meat, pasta and pizza, vegetables, sauces, and desserts. Topping it off, Lagerfeld provides his personal tips for staying slim, attractive, and fit with additional chapters on skin care procedures, cosmetic treatments and surgery, general medical care, stress management, giving up tobacco, sleep, and exercise. Both an instructional guide and a motivational coach, The Karl Lagerfeld Diet is the ultimate accessory for healthy living. "Karl Lagerfeld's case is spectacular as it shows how it is possible, through determination and willpower, to return to a harmonious balance even when excess weight is of a long-standing, deeply ingrained nature. I hope that many will be inspired by the example of the slimmed-down, elegant, and indefatigable Karl Lagerfeld to lose either the few pounds they feel should be sacrificed for their happiness or the several dozen pounds that are detrimental to their survival." (Dr. Jean-Claude Houdret)

Best Diet Book in Years.......2005-06-19
Love the recipes, the content, even the exercises are just right. This book offers sane advice for loosing weight and it has worked for me now for over a month.
The Best Thing About This Book.......2005-06-14
The best thing about this book is that we get to see pictures of what Karl Lagerfeld looked like when he was young and handsome, before he got that strange little gray ponytail and the tinted sunglasses. You KNOW what I'm talking about. The diet isn't so much rigorous as it is regimented and you have to buy the doctor's supplements as well. Get the book for the pictures of Monsieur Lagerfeld, eat healthily, and ignore the rest.
Strict Caloric Intake Based Plan.......2005-05-10
Dr Jean-Claude Houdret, architect of the Spoonlight (his supplement brand name) program -- renamed here "the Karl Lagerfeld Diet" after the famous haute couture designer lost over 88 pounds and maintained a weight that enabled him to wear clothing that he had last worn when he was 18 years old -- advocates a simple-to-understand but perhaps difficult-to-implement regime of three phases where the emphasis is eating mainly protein and certain vegetables and maximizing muscle retention by adding his pre packaged protein supplements. Mr. Lagerfeld freely comments throughout this pleasantly formatted book in blue-fonted asides, relaying dieting tips and offering support in the form of his own personal experience complete with line drawings, photographs and even a poster summarizing the plan to hang in your kitchen pantry door.
Speaking strictly from a practical level, as certain phases of this diet rely on substituting Dr. Houdret's protein supplements for actual meals, -- Dr Houdret's dieting concept hinges on the fact that the unhealthy loss of muscle mass during weight loss can be avoided by adding extra protein to each meal -- this diet plan may not be feasible simply because the Spoonlight product is not easily obtained. That is not to say that Houdret does not advocate the consumption of real food - the recipes that make up the bulk of this book require great seasonal ingredients. These actual meals debut in the second phase of the plan and their frequency increases as reliance on the protein sachets decreases in phase 3--- But don't get confused and think that this is just a recant of other recent European idea imports like "the French Fallacy", the "Montignac Method" or "French Women Don't Get Fat,"that advocate enjoying real food in limited quantities. Houdret's Spoonlight program, while heavy on the protein, limits fat intake to almost nothing and recommends only eating carbs in the form of most green vegetables. Dried fruit, peas, dry beans and lentils are not allowed. Neither are cheese or dairy products unless their fat content remains within the 0% to 20% range. The usual top offenders of white flour, pasta, rice, chocolate and sugar remain taboo on this plan.
Houdret warns that there will be some physical and mental discomfort on the most limited phase of the plan and requires further supplementation that runs the gamut of a general cocktail of vitamins and minerals to natural hunger suppressants, cactus extracts, doses of ginseng and yarrow and a metabolism balancer consisting of spirulina, chromium yeast and lithotamus. All are packaged by the good doctor and sold on his website.
On a nuts and bolts level, Phase I of the diet consists of consuming only 800 to 900 calories a day and is only suggested while under the care of a monitoring physician. This level which is recommended for only 2 weeks consists of Spoonlight protein sachets ingested with 8 ounces of vegetables, three times a day. As a less aggressive starting point, Level II is not as depriving (1000- 1200 calories per day) , with slightly more variety on the protein intake as you are allowed a fish, poultry or meat choice in the evening rather than the mandatory protein sachets consumed at breakfast and lunch. I found Houdret's suggestion of following up a meal with some low-fat cheese or yogurt interesting as well as timely in light of study results that find low fat dairy beneficial for weight loss and disease prevention. Level III allows the participant to consume 1200 to 1600 calories a day with the addition of whole wheat toast at breakfast and fruit following dinner in the evening.
Bottom line: As this plan seems to incorporate low-fat, low carb and protein balance into one minimalist plan, I can't see how you could not lose weight, especially if the strict guideline of meal replacement fits into a busy schedule that does not allow for time to think let alone plan or eat a good healthy meal. On the other hand, even though I found some of Houdret's less conventional dietary no-nos food for thought and plan on experimenting with them in my own eating plan, I don't want to spend most of my food budget on consuming proteins packets and supplements instead of real food. I would rather learn how to eat right for the long term without having to rely on a quick pre-packaged fix.

Florida and Cuban recipes.......2007-03-21
As a young boy, I spent my summers on Boca Grande Island. My Grandmother often used this book. There are recipes from great Tampa cooks and from local restaurants - the most notable being the Columbia in Ybor City.
The introductions to the chapters bring back Florida as it was before air conditioning and the influx of northerners, "When we were children, the Gulf beaches were a lonely outpost where the white shell roads were rippled like washboards, and one drove to neighboring towns for groceries, ice, and drinking water". A great book.

Book Description
The introduction of the horse brought many advantages to medieval English farming, particularly as an improvement to ploughing and hauling. But the replacement of oxen by horses was by no means inevitable, as the situation often depended upon a number of factors not immediately obvious to modern eyes. These factors, which included such environmental aspects as soil types and terrain, are evaluated to see how they affected the decision to use horses and oxen. The introduction of the horse is furthermore examined in relation to farm production, the improvement in marketing, and the development of regionalism; and various theories regarding technological innovation are assessed to see whether this or that innovation acted in a predictable way. Most importantly, the study affords a glimpse into the working of the minds of medieval farmers as they approached the problems of livelihood and survival.
Book Description
A complete compendium of equestrian terms, THE HORSEMAN'S ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY goes beyond simple words and phrases. In addition to providing easy-to-understand definitions of both esoteric and commonly used terms, Steven D. Price delves into their fascinating derivations. You'll learn, for example, that the name of the Percheron draft horse comes from the breed's origins in the La Perche area of Normandy, France; that "bishoping"--doctoring a horse's teeth to show a younger age--refers to an unscrupulous eighteenth-century horse dealer named Bishop; and that the "canter" gait is a shortened version of "Canterbury gallop," purportedly inspired by the pilgrims who rode to Canterbury at that pace. You'll discover that a "coop" does not necessarily hold chickens; find out why an "alligator" might be found in a horse arena; and learn that an "elevator" does not carry passengers but fits in a horse's mouth.
Edifying and entertaining, THE HORSEMAN'S ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY is both a useful reference work and a lively, panoramic view of the culture and history of the horse. This beautifully illustrated volume proves that horse people of all interests can learn to speak one another's language. It makes a perfect gift for any horse lover.

Book Description
PONIES PAST AND PRESENT - THE BREEDS OF THE BRITISH ISLANDS. By Sir Walter Gilbey, Bart. Originally published in 1900, this rare early work on Native British Ponies is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. READ COUNTRY BOOKS has republished it using the original text and illustrations. The author was a respected authority on all equestrian matters and published several important books on the subject as well as contributing numerous articles to the sporting and farming press of that era. This title was the first comprehensive work on British Ponies ever written, and the first to draw attention to their important contribution to polo pony breeding. The book consists of one hundred and thirty six pages, including eight full page plates. A lengthy introduction takes the reader through some of the early history, origins, and laws relating to the pony breeds. This is followed by eight detailed chapters:- The New Forest Pony. - The Welsh Pony. - The Exmoor and Dartmoor Ponies. - The Cumberland and Westmoreland Ponies. - Ireland - The Connemara Pony. - The Ponies of Scotland and the Shetland Islands. - Uses and Characteristics of the Pony. - Breeding Polo Ponies. This is a fascinating read for any pony enthusiast or historian of the breeds, and also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest equestrian books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. READ COUNTRY BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Customer Reviews:
not MinnowKnits.......2007-06-15
I love the patterns in the MinnowKnits series and have made several of them but was disappointed with this book.
A Nice Knitting Book.......2004-06-11
Big Fish, Little Fish starts with basic How-to-Knit instructions, moves on to some well-designed basic sweaters, adds some specialty designs with things like peplums and assymetrical necklines, and finishes up with hats, socks, and mittens. The yarns suggested are specialty yarns, but the gauges are fairly standard so you can easily substitute (assuming you understand how to use gauge information). All the patterns are designed with simple basic shapes, so there is limited shaping, but there are clever little details that make the designs a little more stylish.
There are good patterns for men, women, and children. I have made several without any difficulties, and been pleased by the fit and the ease of working. Since they are simple, changing a cable or adding a pattern stitch is easy. While I have a number of knitting pattern books, I didn't find that there was too much overlap. For example, the sock pattern is done with bulky yarn, while most of the sock patterns you already have are probably made with fine yarns. Mittens with a cable, a fleecy zippered vest, and a hat with an unusual crown design are more examples of traditional patterns with a twist.
Easy, quick and stylish.......2004-05-19
Jil Eaton has a way of making knitting seem even more fun. She is, without a doubt, a sensible knitter for people running on a time deficit. How often do you see a lovely aran knit sweater and see hour after hour ticking away when you know you need to grocery shop, bathe the kids, pay bills? Well, then Jil Eaton is an answer to your prayers. Her projecst truly are QuickKnits.
Big Fish, Little Fish is chock full of attractive sweaters and accessories that won't suck all your time away. Cable knit sweaters and vests, cardigans, pull-overs, hats, mittens, socks, it has it all. I found several items to knit in the book (and did so with no problems pattern-wise). And, the huge size range really makes this book worth the money.
She gives you measurements for peices and yardage so you can use just about any fiber and weight you want if you're willing to do a little math.
It's not for a true beginner as she doesn't give specific directions for the details (decreasing for necklines, picking up and knitting stitches, seaming). But, used in conjunctions with a "knitting bible" it's a great way to whip up some really nice sweaters traditionally designed, made better by interesting color combinations and notions.
A good collection.......2001-12-25
I own all of Jil Eaton's books. I consider this one a particularly good collection for those looking for basic children's and adult pattterns, such as socks, mitterns, (fabulous) hats, neck warmers, vests (v-neck or zippered), or plain crew neck sweaters. Plus, most (maybe all) of the patterns can be done in worsted weight yarn. Unlike Minnies, which uses many expensive designer yarn (to be dry-clean no less) for baby outfits, Big Fish Little Fish patterns can be done with any worsted yarn. So while I enjoyed making outfits from Jil Eaton's previous Minnowknits books, I like Big Fish Little Fish for its "wholesomeness". After you buy this book, you no longer need to buy individual patterns for socks, mitterns, basic sweaters and vests. I highly recommend this book.
Easy Patterns for the Beginner.......2001-11-28
I chose this as my first knitting book because the patterns look stylish yet quick and easy enough for a beginner. I did find it difficult to gauge stitches based on the information in the book. (The needle sizes seemed to be off for me.)
Most of the patterns in the book are of sweaters. There are also several of mittens, a hat, socks, and a chin warmer. One of the things I liked was that there are a couple of patterns suitable for guys -- simple, non-fussy things that even my husband said he wouldn't mind wearing!
Eaton does include how to knit some basic stitches and laundering information; however, if you're a beginner, you definitely need to get another how-to book. Something that describes how to fix dropped stitches or other problems that inevitably creep up.
Although I imagine one could probably find such easy patterns elsewhere, I think that the appeal of this book is that it has great color pictures of finished products that inspire rather than intimidate the beginner.

Feeling drowsy? "Women are probably the most sleep-deprived creatures on earth," writes Joyce Walsleben, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at New York University School of Medicine and the 1998 spokesperson for the National Sleep Foundation's Survey on Women and Sleep. Hormonal surges--pregnancy, PMS, perimenopause--disrupt our sleep, as do the combined demands of career and children. (A new mother may lose up to 700 hours of sleep before her baby's first birthday!) Add stress, bladder urgency, depression, pain, and a variety of other interferences, and it's a wonder we sleep at all.
Walsleben covers why and how we sleep, what's keeping us awake, aging and how it affects stages of sleep, and physical and emotional conditions that can interfere with getting enough sleep. She helps us understand what is disrupting our own sleep, with advice from simple lifestyle changes to herbs, supplements, drugs, and foods. And she provides tons of tips, such as these:
- If you have a glow-in-the-dark clock, turn it around so you won't see it when you wake up at night. We all wake up several times during the night, and watching the clock will reinforce the "awake feeling" and make it more difficult to get back to sleep.
- Avoid caffeine--including coffee, tea, soft drinks, and chocolate--and stimulating medications from afternoon on. It takes 3 to 7 hours to rid your system of caffeine completely.
- If you have a new baby, nap when your baby sleeps. Aim for a 30-minute nap in the early afternoon. A longer nap will make you sleep more deeply and awake feeling groggy and grumpy.
- If nighttime sex leaves you wide awake (while your partner sleeps like a baby beside you), try scheduling romance early in the evening, or delay it until early in the morning.
Whatever the reasons for your sleep deprivation, you'll find explanations and solutions in this book. You'll even learn a dozen ways to stop your partner from snoring! --Joan Price
Book Description
Unique Solutions for a Woman’s Unique Sleep Problems
“Women are probably the most sleep-deprived creatures on earth,” says Dr. Joyce Walsleben, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the NYU School of Medicine.
Fluctuating hormones—whether from PMS, pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause—can wreak havoc on your sleep. If you’re a new mom, you could lose seven hundred hours of sleep in your baby’s first year! As you get older, your sleep schedule can slip off track. Depression and chronic pain can erode your sleep. What you eat—or don’t eat, if you’re dieting—can sabotage your nights, and then there’s the pressure of juggling work, home, and parenting.
Women’s unique sleep problems require unique solutions. The authors explain how to combat restless nights with the right sleep-promoting foods, supplements, herbs, exercise, stress reducers, and biorhythm adjustments, as well as with prescription, over-the-counter, and alternative treatments. You’ll learn how to avoid the sleep robbers hidden in many common foods and medications. You’ll also receive valuable tips on how to get a good night’s sleep when a tossing and turning partner or wakeful child is the problem. A comprehensive resource section will guide you to support groups, websites, and sleep clinics. With this groundbreaking guide tailored to your unique needs, you won’t ever have to drag yourself through another exhausted day again.
Customer Reviews:
How about a good night's sleep for a change?.......2001-07-13
I enjoyed this book because the authors spoke frankly and openly about the various aspects of women's sleep. I'm not sure the book lives up to it's title phrase of "guaranteed solutions for a good night's rest" but it is very helpful and does offer some solutions I had never tried. It was also interesting to note how many factors can affect a woman's sleep as opposed to a man's. The authors offer sleep solutions in all categories, including certain foods you can eat to help you sleep, supplements you can take and lifestyle changes that aren't too tough to do. There are helpful little lists along the way, like "The top ten sleep busters" and "Stop the Snoring". The authors delve into the structure of sleep, explaining in layman's terms the various sleep stages and cycles, and how they can be affected by stimuli. One aspect of the book I did not like were the gray boxed areas that interrupted the reading. These areas, sometimes a few pages long, were very good reading, but they interrupted the flow of the book and often got you going on another sleep topic so that when you picked up where you left off, you forgot what you had been reading when you stopped. I also thought there was an awful lot of repetition, as though the authors were attempting to fill pages. At the very end of the book is a comprehensive listing of all sorts of sleep centers, sleep specialists, websites, and books for the sleep impaired. I thought this addition was great. If you are looking for some great suggestions and some new things to try, or just interested in this topic, this is a good book for you.
Good sound guide to better sleep.......2001-03-21
A good blend between easy conversational writing and a large amount of fairly technical information. There's a lot in this book that could help almost anyone get a better nights sleep. She covers almost everything in here that could disrupt sleep, from hormone fluctuations, to snoring partners, to small children. While I will continue to suffer from periodic sleep deprivation for a while (comes with the job when you're a mother of small kids), with this book, I know I can keep the temporary sleep disruptions from becoming a habit and a way of life. My only gripe at all is that sometimes you have to wade through a lot of information intended for other people to find what's relevant to you, but most of the information is interelated, so that's not too tedious a job. Good job overall.
Sleeping better.......2000-11-02
I found this book to be very helpful. I am a bit of a health nut and buy a lot of health related books. I thought it was one of the better health books that I've read. I liked that it gave both technical and common sense information about sleep. I didn't have a big sleep problem, but I have been trying some of Dr. Walsleben's suggestions and I find I am sleeping better. A lot of the old remedies really do work!

Book Description
Engaging, sophisticated, and witty, French-born artist James Joseph Tissot painted for many years in mid-nineteenth century London. Book Description
This companion to the 600 major and minor Irish painters, sculptors, stained glass artists, and designers of the 20th century includes such important figures as Jack B. Yeats, Evie Hone, Sir John Lavery, Sir William Orpen, and many more. Each entry offers bibliographic information and listings of the institutions where the artists' works can be found. In a subsidiary capacity, many other practitioners, mainly of non-Irish background, are mentioned in entries and in the index of artists. It is an essential reference work for all those interested in Irish art.
