Book Description
Salem, North Carolina, founded as a theocratic congregation town of the Moravian Church, operated under church regulations of its citizens' personal and professional lives in the early years of the community. Historically, members of the Moravian church adhered to an ideal of pacifism; however, the early nineteenth century saw a shift from the theocratic congregation town united by a single religious ideal and social ethos to a secular commercial marketplace. This transfer of ideals influenced thinking both on the impending war and on slavery. Thus, the church eased its structure and adjusted its congregational views to allow for the changing times and attitudes of its citizenry.
Bright and Gloomy Days, the latest contribution to the Voices of the Civil War series, provides the unique perspective of a Confederate army supplier and Moravian. The letters of Charles Frederic Bahnson, an assistant quartermaster in the Confederate army, to his father, a bishop in the Moravian church, between 1860 and 1865 relate events such as the Gettysburg and Shenandoah Valley campaigns, tell stories of the "good life" in the garrison of the forts near Wilmington, North Carolina, and even provide news of a slave woman's poisoning her mistress's child. In his correspondence, Bahnson reacts to early news of the war when he lived in the North, army politics, construction of winter quarters, commodity prices in conscription, punishment of deserters, handling of the dead, Confederate morale, and problems related to his official duties as a junior officer.
Bahnson expresses strong patriotic sentiments but frequently refers to his assignment as a "bomb proof department," illuminating his desire to secure non-combat jobs for himself, his friends, and his family. Because of his "safe" situation, his many references to camp life chronicle not military action but the daily routines of life in the campgrounds. The letters of Charles Frederic Bahnson illustrate a dedication to the Confederate cause and a sense of duty to his fellow southerners, along with a commitment to the Moravian faith.

The successful father and son franchise of Dr. Phil and Jay McGraw continues with The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens. Here, Jay translates the seven keys that made Dad's diet book a mega seller into a smart, supportive teen manifesto for tackling unwanted pounds, body image problems and eating disorders. He uses examples and web postings drawn from his survey with 10,000 teenagers to underline a powerful message: "Weight is not about the size or your Levis or a number on the scale. It's about whether you use food to take care of your body or to abuse it." McGraw's approach is mind over milkshake, skewering the negative thoughts ("I can't have fun if I have to watch what I eat") that keep teens from experiencing "weight freedom." He examines self-defeating filters (denial, approval seeking , perfection, comparison)that distort a healthy approach to weight and also suggests a "peer and parent response plan" to avoid sabotage. He teaches how to scan the environment for eating cues. Even when McGraw rounds up the usual suspects--exercise and a sermon about sugar--he conveys a fresh and relevant message of self-knowledge. The wisdom of McGraw's approach to teen readers is this focus on thoughts and feelings, rather than on the third helping of pizza. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Weight issues are one of the leading causes of teen depression.
Since you are reading the back of this book, I'm guessing that you picked it up because you relate, at least in some way, to some of the following statements:
I can't stand my body!
I don't know how to lose weight!
The other kids always make fun of me and call me fat!
I hate myself!
Well, I have some good news for you. Actually, I have some great news.
By picking up this book, you have taken the first step to deciding to do something about your weight and your self-image. This book will give you the answers to the many problems that you have been facing. And it will give you a plan for dealing with those problems. And I will go through it all with you. Now get psyched!
You are about to begin one of the most life-changing experiences of your life. -- JAY MCGRAW, FROM THE INTRODUCTION
As Jay McGraw says, The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens is a book that will change lives. Weight issues are one of the leading causes of teen depression, and The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens is being published at a time when weight is the top issue in so many teens' lives. Inspired by the enormous success of the #1 bestselling The Ultimate Weight Solution by Dr. Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw has written a book that deals with the specific issues teens face when it comes to weight matters. It's hard enough to be a teen, it's even harder to be an overweight teen. No one knows that better than the young people who suffer the teasing and name-calling that seem to resonate daily through their school halls. But what do you do when your friends are scarfing pizza and cheese fries and you're trying to lose weight? With this book, Jay addresses this and other problems in a way that they have never been addressed before -- in a way that actually works! Just as he did in his bestselling books Life Strategies for Teens and Closing the Gap, Jay talks directly to teens and young adults in a way to which they can relate. Jay gets it and he knows how to give it to them straight. The result is a book that can do what teens all over have been looking for -- a way to totally transform their bodies, minds, and lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book even for adults.......2007-01-12
Out of all the diet books that I have read, I love this the best. I am a 31 year old adult and used this book over dr. phils and lost 15 lbs. Very easy and clear cut well worth adding to the library.
Great book, especially for the appropriate reader........2007-01-08
Prior to reading this book, I had read Dr. Phil's adult counterpart. As an 18-year-old reader, however, I often felt that the book wasn't wholly appropriate for me as it referred to having responsibilities such as a career, kids, bills, etc. It also would include phrases like, "I want the body I had when I was in highschool!" This is obviously not relevant to someone that is still a teenaged student. At the time, I wasn't aware that Jay's book existed, but as soon as I saw it, I decided that I had to buy it.
Although this book is definitely more appropriate for a teenager, I think it is certainly written for a younger teen. Upon first starting the book, I was annoyed by the colloquial tone it used to establish a, "Hey, I'm young too!" type deal. He started the book with a line like, "What's up?" and uses words and phrases like "crap," "bs," "stuff," etc. He also frequently interjects anecdotes about his friends, family, and life experiences, and repeatedly talks about his involvement in school as a law student. Although I do think it's admirable that he is trying to establish a connection with his reader, it is a little over-done.
Aside from this being written for a younger person, it seems also to focus on severely depressed people with low self-esteem. For me, as someone who has never been picked on, has never had an issue with low self-esteem, and has no means to relate to the quotes in the book like, "I hate myself!!!," I found most of these parts boring. There is also an entire chapter devoted to those suffering from anorexia and bulimia that I completely skipped over.
You definitely get over it fast though, and this book was somewhat amusing and as easy read (written on probably a sixth grade level). I was able to read it in two days and found it difficult to put down. My above comments were not at all to criticize the author or discourage someone from reading this, but I would advise an older teenager to perhaps look into other options or even consider reading Dr. Phil's book and deal with the irrelevant parts.
The bottom line, though, is that this book is definitely helpful to anyone of any age. I personally liked the suggestions of ways to distract myself when I want to snack (I now will take a shower, go for a walk, or paint my nails). The nutritional plan is well-organized and easy to follow, and I actually like this chapter more than the one in Dr. Phil's book. There are certain "fluff" keys I think are used only to make the book longer, but the ones that help really do get the job done. I wish the best of luck to anyone embarking upon a weight loss journey; this book will definitely give you the push you need!
Very good information........2004-08-16
This book was filled with a lot of information. Even though i'm not currently sticking to the "program", I found out a lot of information that I could share with others who are trying to get into a healthy life-style. If I ever get sick of being so over-weight, then I would find this book very useful. The only thing it did not do was make me realize how much I need to lose weight. But that isn't the book's fault. It's mine because nobody can get it thru my head that if I don't lose weight, I could have very bad health problems later on.
Great Book.......2004-04-10
Really hit the nail when it comes to helping teenagers cope witht their weight problem. Jay addressess everything from how to have a positive out look on life to ways to start taking control of your weight. I was surprised at how much sense it made to me. It was like this book was written with me in mind. It addressed all the feelings i had towards myself and my weight and made me realized that their more to me than just how much i weighed. This book was surprising well written. Jay is a really talented writer and I thought this was just a knock off of Dr. Phils book, but this book really addressess teens and their issues in a way that is easy to relate to. Well Done.
Awesome Book! Really Helpful!.......2004-02-09
I am 12 years old and 35 pounds overweight. I got this book about 2 months ago. It had alot of great ideas that really worked. I put this book to the test and in the past month i've lost 10 pounds. I reccomend this to teens(or preteens) who have tryed to lose weight with other diets and had no success. Overall, I think this is a wonderful and really helpful book.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book, But..........2007-02-20
Your first concern must be: "Only three ingredients?! The recipes can't taste that good." Let me assure you that the recipes are absolutely delicious, despite the fact that they contain only three ingredients. (Recipes often contain salt and pepper, which are not considered ingredients.)
However, here's the caveat: While the recipes call for only three ingredients, many of those ingredients are rare indeed. Examples: saffron threads, Thai curry oil, za'atar, pomegranate molasses, rutabaga, Asiago cheese, creme fraiche, fresh tarragon, tandoori paste, mango chutney, etc. You were probably thinking: "Only three ingredients, I'll definitely have all three ingredients in my house." Think again. Unless you have fennel seeds in your house, you can't make the roast pork recipe on page 164. So many recipes call for obscure ingredients, I felt the need to alert potential buyers.
That being disclosed, many recipes call for ingredients that you will probably have. And all the recipes I've tried so far have been delicious and easy to prepare.
More pictures would be nice.......2005-09-05
This book has tons of recipes but I was disappointed when I recieved the book because many of the recipes do not have pictures. For me, pictures are essential to cookbooks because I like to see what the dish looks like. Because of the lack of pictures, I don't look at this book much and have not tried many of the recipes. i should add that where there are pictures, they are nicely done. The book would be greatly enhanced if there was a picture for every recipe.
just what I expected.......2004-06-06
I ordered a copy of this book from The Good Cook cook book club. The description sounded really intriguing--only 3 ingredients for each recipe (not including salt, pepper, and water). What a beautifully simple idea! The book is gorgeous, and the recipes sound very fresh and tasty. Can't wait to try them. As a seasoned cook who is also a busy person and has to cook on the fly, I can tell that this is a well-thought-through and elegant approach to cooking--just my cup of tea--using fresh and wholesome recipes rendered very creatively.
1-2-3 is not a-b-c, but it is fabulous!.......2004-02-13
Do not be fooled into thinking that because every one of these 500 recipes has only 3 ingredients, (excluding salt, pepper and water) that the recipes are quick and easy. Some are. What could be simpler than mixing mayo and wasabi, spreading it onto salmon fillets and shoving it in the oven for 10 minutes? However, the 18-hour slow-cooked pork, while very easy, needs 6 hours absorbing its spices, and 18 hours in a very slow oven. Not quick. And the pears Belle Helene need you to poach some pears, make sorbet with the others, stuff the pears with sorbet and top the lot with chocolate. Neither quick nor all that easy. Nor does the book reduce pantry space with its reduced ingredients; you'll want to stock up with garlic oil and hunt down pomegranate molasses, for example.
What the book does well is give you a feel for how ingredients work in a dish. Once you've sautéed asparagus in sesame oil, you'll never look back. If you're a beginner cook, you may find the book less useful, as it assumes you have basic cooking techniques. If you're an innovative and enthusiastic cook, you'll be poring over it for hours and producing some rather spectacular results.
Cooking 1-2-3.......2003-12-06
I use this book many times each week. It is easily the best book in my busy household. The recipes are easy to follow and they give me a sense of accomplishment when I produce something so delicious. I am going to get all her other books. Home made meals really are the best!

What would you give for one way to love your cat that they would allow to work?.......2005-08-12
D.H. Love, the author of "365 Ways to Love your Lover," has moved on to an even harder subject with "365 Ways to Love your Cat." That is because you can try to love your cat any way you want, the key question is whether your cat will allow you that prerogative. I mean, when I started reading this book aloud to our cat, Kiara, she totally ignored me. I was going to take umbrage at her apathy, but then I remembered I am the only person on the face of the earth that she does not try to bite and that every night when I got to bed she gets in the way and lies on her bad so I can put my foot on my tummy and spin her around, so I figured I should just shut up and be grateful.
The advice being given here is, for the most part, quite practical, although Love clearly tries to be amusing as well as helpful with some of these fun tips. Some of what is in here will be commonsense to any long-term cat owner, but even if you are not a neophyte you are going to easily find dozens of ways you have not thought of trying before and the bottom line is that it cannot hurt. Love does not assume that all cats are the same. The preface talks about pedigreed or stray, longhaired or short, but Love pays more attention to the different temperaments exhibited by domestic felines. This book is better suited for somebody thinking about getting a cat or just getting used to having something small and new ruling the roost, but anybody who has one or more cats in their life will find something of value in this list.
To be clear, there is no real logical order to these 365 tips, so do not think that this is one of those books that starts with January 1st and ends with December 31st. You can certainly use it that way, proceeding from start to finish or jumping around and hoping that the Fates are kind to you and bring you to the tips that will help you love your cate sooner than later. "365 Ways to Love your Cat" is illustrated by Jane Watkins, who put together a border for each page, which is then reversed on the opposite page, and then worked in another dozen-plus pencil drawings of cats to make the pages look different to go along with the little drawings of cat related objects between the number and the specific way to love your cat.
Final note: On the copyright page it is noted "It is not the intention of the author or the publisher that you should follow any instructions concerning the care of your cat over than those of your vet." Now, I do not know if our cat has a vet, but I can envision calling them up to make sure that keeping your cat's bowl clean or stroking her as she's falling asleep would be unhealthy. I would be curious to know what objections a vet would have to you keeping a special album with photos of you and your cat, but I will admit there is a practical answer out there as to where you should lift a cat given way #177, "Never grab a cat just any old place when you are lifting her.
Write a Poem about Your Cat.......2005-07-18
Always remember the essence of Cat-tesian philosophy: `I am, therefore you must love me!'
D.H. Love presents a fun little book about cat care from a very caring perspective. If you think of your cats as members of the family, then this will show you how to baby and pamper your pet cats, those most deserving members of the family.
Some of the great advice includes tips for making your house safe for pets and how to bring a new kitten into your home or how to write a poem for your cat.
"Cats also love it when you purr at them. It's a way to bond in cat-speak."
It has taken our older cat five months to get used to the new kitten and this weekend she finally is purring again when I pet her. Introducing a new cat into the family can be a little traumatic and I realized that a male and female cat adapt more easily than two females. Cats can be quite jealous and it can take time for them to adapt.
I thought it was strange to read about applying suntan lotion to a cat, but after further research there are some natural solutions. I think if you choose a cat with darker fur and you have indoor cats, you won't have to worry about this.
This book also has lots of humor, a list of Ten Cat-mandments and advice like:
"Don't get angry if your kitty walks over the newly washed floor. Paw prints can actually be an attractive design element."
I knew I had officially lost it when I didn't want to wash a paw print off a window. Definitely one of the signs of being a new kitten mommy!

My cats own the house...
P.S. Love the Pet Gear Stroller sold here at Amazon except, you may have to sew down the two side flaps if you have a small kitten. We now go out on walks to give me great exercise and Meesa thinks it is great fun to get out of the house.

Book Description
This practical companion to Reviving Ophelia and Real Boys shares the concerns of preteens in their own words and advises parents how to approach them confidently and effectively. Many parents may not want to know that their eight- to fourteen-year-olds are already facing serious issues and have questions such as: Why do people make fun of me because I am from another country? When will I know when puberty has struck? How do I deal with the feeling that no matter how good I do it's not good enough for my parents? What happens when a friend beats you up?Without support, understanding, and assistance, the anxiety these dilemmas evoke could undermine a child's confidence and self-image as he or she matures. In a reassuring style filled with practical pointers, Ellen Rosenberg, veteran educator of thirty years, tells parents how to open a discussion on the day-to-day questions their preteens have but may be reluctant to share. Handwritten queries from preteens are included in the text, and as they attest, your children do want you to know what's really going on.A communication bible that parents will return to again and again, Get a Clue! is sure to help parents and their children become closer and form a bond of trust that will last through middle school, high school, college, and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
A sensible, practical book.......2002-04-09
Get A Clue! A Parent's Guide To Understanding And Communicating With Your Preteen by wife, mother, and certified sex educator Ellen Rosenberg is a sensible, practical book for adults on how to relate with one's child about such complex and difficult topics as self-esteem, physical maturation and sexual development, alcohol and other drugs, friendship and popularity, death and suicide, and much more. Get A Clue! is very highly recommended as a solid, "parent friendly" resource filled cover to cover with examples, useful advice, and practical information about teaching young people the facts they need to know to guide their own lives as they grow up.
This book really helped us to help our children........2000-04-16
This is a great book! My wife and I are "older" parents of three children. Sometimes we feel very far removed from the issues they face - especially our youngest. We attended one of Ms. Rosenberg's lectures and were very impressed by the directness with which she was able to address real issues that were very important to the children present - in an intimate fashion, offering the child who was the "source" of the question total privacy, saving any embarrassment which might evolve from a direct one-on-one discussion. You really had to be there to see how the children opened up and participated in discussions they would not address directly with their parents. When we learned of "Get A Clue" we immediately bought it. It is a mirror of the discussion group. The answers are real. The suggestions about how to approach different issues are on target. We use it as a reference and it has been effective for us because it addresses the things on our childrens' minds. The reality of the issues presented and the suggested responses are right on target. It really has worked for us and I certainly suspect it will work for others.
