Breast Cancer Husband : How to Help Your Wife (and Yourself) during Diagnosis, Treatment and Beyond
ASIN: 0972159908 |
Book Description
Men and breast cancer, men and breasts. What thoughts pass through a man's mind upon learning that his wife has breast cancer? The first thing that hits you is the suffocating realization that, despite all of the modern medical advances in detection technology and treatment, breast cancer remains a vicious killer of women in the prime of their lives. But it doesn't stop there. After the immediate survival hurtle is crossed (if you're so lucky), the mind is freed up to wander about in a jungle of very male thoughts and fears motivated at least in part by carnal appetite, deeply held male sexual fantasies that headline the erotic allure of breasts, and dark frightful anatomical images of what the future may hold in store. Many of these very private, very visceral thoughts can ve extremely difficult to deal with, even among the most considerate if husbands and in the best marriages. But to deny them is to deny the reality of the nero-biological make-up of the male human animal, with all of our evolutionary warts and scars. And while I'm sure there are some men that claim to be free of such blemishes, I cannot. And frankly, I question the candor of any man that does.
Customer Reviews:

A timely perspective.......2002-11-20
Mr. Lyman offers a very candid and heartfelt account of his and his wife's journey through the battle of breast cancer. From the moment of discovery through treatment and recovery, we accompany this man and his wife. We experience his fears, his frustrations and his failures, as well as his love and support. This is truely a remarkable love story, but it is also a great reference book that would benefit anyone experiencing breat cancer.

FOOD AS MEDICINE.......2007-06-20
I GIVE THIS BOOK A LOW SCORE BECAUSE IT IS NOT A VERY GOOD BOOK ON EATING.
THERE IS NO PORTION CONTROL INFORMATION OR SUGGESTIONS. PORTIONS ARE THE KEY TO A PROPER DIET. WE ALL [AMERICANS] EAT TOO MUCH. WE'RE ALL OVER WEIGHT AND SUFFER FROM MANY EATING RELATED DISORDERS. WHAT YOU EAT IS AS IMPORTANT
AS HOW MUCH. THE SHORT SECTION ON GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISORDERS FOLLOWS THE STANDARD ANTI-BIOTIC APPROACH THOUGH CULTURED DAIRY PRODUCTS [YOGURT,BUTTERMILK,ACIDOPHILUS, COTTAGE CHEESE, SAUER KRAUT ] AND FIBER DO A MUCH BETTER AND SAFER JOB OF CURING THESE PROBLEMS.
I THINK THE OBJECTIVE OF "MEDICINE" IN THE USA IS ILLNESS. BEING SICK IS BIG BUSINESS. PIG OUT AND OFTEN. BE SICK...ALWAYS SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR ANOTHER DRUG OR TWO OR THREE...
For dietetics students...too simple.......2007-06-10
I had to buy this book for a class, but only used it once. It doesn't really contain THAT much information, and when one has to do research, this in not the best book to use as a reference. If you're not a student, I'd say it'll be very helpful, but for students...it is just too simple and doesn't get into the complicated facts about nutrition or dietetics we really need to learn. I already graduated, and I won't recommend this book as the reference for a major course in dietetics.
still using the USDA Food Guide Pyramid?.......2007-05-19
I was disappointed to see that this book still endorses the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. Walter Willett's Book, "Eat, Drink, and be Healthy" has a much more acurate and up-to-date pyramid that emphasizes the importance of unsaturated oils, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fish, and he doesn't get paid by beef and dairy lobbyists who pay our government to spread the false fact that it is necessary to eat these products to be healthy.
Great gift , great resource .......2007-03-18
This book covers a lot of information that we cover in the food and nutrition classes that I teach. For my students, it's an invaluable resource with information I can trust It's balanced, accurate, and easy for students -- or anyone -- to understand. It's also become my standard gift for friends, weddings, and more.
"True to its Title" by Victoria Salvato-Lechner.......2007-01-22
As a 55 year old mother, triathlon trainee and in a highly stressful hospital occupation, it was great to find such straightforward and complete information at my fingertips. This book is easy and enjoyable to read and yet manages to be a quick, comprehensive reference. I have randomly chosen health topics that interest me, for example, medication interactions with vitamin supplements. The information provided was to the point and beautifully organized. I was especially intrigued by the "Have You Ever Wondered" sections, that simply and effectively debunked common nutrition myths. This book provides believable ammunition against the fad diets and quick-fix formulas that only serve to squander our hard earned dollars and time.I believe it to be a "must have" for any home library and will include it as part of a wedding present for my niece this summer.
Amazon.com
Named a top health book by Ladies Home Journal, The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food & Nutrition Guide teaches how to combine "good taste and good health" in every meal and snack. No matter how nutritionally impaired you think you are, you'll find clear, understandable information on the basics of metabolism and weight management, vegetarianism, nutrition for athletes, food allergies, and more. The section on eating during pregnancy and breast-feeding is absolutely essential reading for any mom-to-be, as are the chapters on feeding fussy toddlers. If you can't tell radicchio from daikon or don't know how to pronounce quinoa, the superb index will certainly come in handy.
The ADA takes a conservative stance on vitamin and mineral supplements, focusing instead on combining proper foods to maximize absorption, and there's little information about other supplements such as enzymes. But if you need help sorting the food fads from facts, the Complete Food & Nutrition Guide can't be beat.

Good book.......2001-12-03
Exccellent content for all scenarios for nutrition. Weak on protien needs for bodybuilders, but it is definitely worth it for "do you know" sections revealing little tidbits everyone should know about nutrition. Cooking section is great, even a guide to shopping, very good, a great complement in a nutrition library
The best book on nutrition that I had ever read........2001-09-08
I can't praise this book enough! The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food & Nutrition Guide offers a wealth of information in a very easy to read format. If you buy just one book on nutrition, you should consider this one. It is filled with a vast amount of information on nutrition as well as lots of tips on how to apply that information to your life. It really is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it.
A must-have resource!.......2000-10-29
Finally ... a nutrition book that offers honest, straight-forward advice in a format that's easy, and even fun, to read. Although I bought it for myself, it has now become a resource that our entire family uses, including my parents.
Your One-Stop Nutrition Guide--Outstanding!.......1999-10-29
Duyff has managed to sift through the scientific data that supports today's nutrition recommendations and provide consumers and healthcare professionals alike with a comprehensive source of sound and reliable information. If you're looking for THE book, one that covers virtually every topic related to food and nutrition, then look no further-this book's got it all!
More Food Pyramid, One-Size-Fits All Rubbish.......1999-06-21
If you like"Association Diets," especially one from one of the most politically agressive and media savvy organizations, this one is for you. One look shows the typical high starch, high glycemic diet that almost killed me. If you are truly interested in eating healthy, this type of one-size-fits all diet guide is just about useless.

Hanky-Panky Crazy Quilts.......2007-04-07
Lots of inspirational pieces are displayed in color with ideas to make it your own masterpiece.
Not a quilt.......2005-02-23
I was disappointed in this book. These are not quilts, but wall hangings, so to me the title is misleading. I also thought the book was too theme oriented with regard to the quilted wall hangings. I inherited alot of handkerchiefs and wanted to make a large quilt.
Hankys galore!.......2004-03-12
This is a great book for quilting and especially for a type of quilting that is not as popular as piecing and applique. I saw the author, Cindy Brick, on HGTV's Simply Quilts! with the ever sparkling Alex Anderson. Cindy showed how to make the cutest crazy hanky quilt so I just had to try it, even though I had recorded the show. I love to buy books on whatever hobby I have (knitting, crochetting, and quilting), and just good-old fiction. This is a great book. I'm sorry to say that I don't have any ancestors that had or saved handerchiefs, but had the thought to look on e-Bay! What do you know?!? There are pages and pages of handkerchiefs for sale of all types and all price ranges, mostly reasonable. This made this book invaluable to me. Hope that the previous reviewer sees this and therefore can get herself more handkerchiefs. There are plenty for all and Cindy Brick probably has some ideas on finding them also. But as she says on the show, "Just don't cut up the valuable historical ones." Great book and author.
Huet-chooo....Bless you!.......2004-02-11
I received this as a gift and would probably not have purchased it on my own (only because I don't have any hankies). The book had a lot of colored pictures and all of the quilts had themes which were based on what was embroidered on the hankies. It is a good book to have for some who has a lot of hankies and would like to turn them into wall hangings to remember beloved ones. Overall it is well written and makes a nice addition to my library.

Customer Reviews:
Raising Girls.......2007-06-24
For as long as I can remember I have wanted a daughter. I strongly believe that raising young girls to be independent, confident, and emotionally healthy woman is an integral part in forming a better functioning society. The world is riddle with misogynist, patriarchal cultures that need a shot of girl power, and I don't mean the cute phrase tossed around my advertising companies, but a more serious socio-political idea that woman need to play a much larger role in the state of the world, if we have any chance of salvaging a deteriorating civilization.
As a middle school teacher, I am realizing that teachers play a colossal role in shaping not only how girls see themselves in an ever changing world, but we can help young boys break their culturally ingrained preconceptions of what it means to be female. But I am getting off topic, because while I may be able to inspire, teach, and help the girls in my class become more free thinking woman, I have the most influence on my own daughter. That is why I feel that reading up on as much literature as I can, will help me become a better dad.
Having said that all that, Raising Girls is a pretty common sense book. She is not really saying anything that most people don't already know. Her main point, a factor I feel is crucial no matter what the sex of a child, is that self-confidence is vital for developing healthy adults.
What was helpful to be about this book, was that she asks both parents to constantly examine their own values and ideas of what women should be like in society. From Barbie to Tom Boys, the author is continually asking parents to be aware of how society influences young girls, and she reminds us that we as parents are part of society as well, and thus must be aware of our own expectations for our daughters. She states that everything we do will somehow influence their identity in the future, from how we dress them, to the things we think they can and cannot do, should or shouldn't do.
Another aspect of the book I found helpful was the fact that she reminds the reader that each child is a unique individual and no matter what influence a parents may have or like to have, we must study the child and find out who she is. Then it is our job to try and help her fully become the person she was meant to be, and not some forced version of the type of woman we would like her to be. This is obviously also important in the classroom.
She says, The better you know yourself and understand your own anxieties, feelings and desires, the less likely you are to force your on children into a rigid mold or transfer your biases and anxieties onto them.
Easier said then done! There is an extensive list of ideas and questions that she asks parents to ask themselves about how the role of gender affected their own childhood, but I will leave that for another time. I would just like to say that although at first glance this book may only seem appropriate or necessary to parents raising girls, it could also offer some insight for teachers, or any body else working with young woman. At the end of the day, it could prove to be beneficial for any man trying to figure out what makes woman tick!
In conclusion, the book is a little on the touchy-feely side, but in a good way. I agree with most of what the author is trying to say:
In order to really find out what your child needs, just observe her, be attentive but not intrusive and offer her a wide variety of experiences.
I think I can handle that.
Amazon.com
In the post-women's movement period of the 1990s, many parents, even those committed to gender equity, are "amazed" at the seemingly inborn differences between the genders. And most parents committed to raising their children free from gender bias give up when the kids are in preschool. Barbara Mackoff, in Growing a Girl, takes to task these postfeminist ideas. She stresses that, instead of focusing on gender, parents should see children in terms of their individuality, while at the same time wearing "gender glasses" and teaching their daughters to be aware of society's gender biases. Mackoff, a consulting psychologist, suggests the concept of "equalist" parents, who create equal opportunities for their daughters in a loving, supportive way. Mackoff gives readers specific, valuable tools for raising spirited, strong daughters and helps parents teach their daughters to enjoy being girls without limiting the opportunities that lie beyond society's gender bias.
Customer Reviews:
Best book I've ever read on raising girls.......2007-07-13
The last reviewer appears not to have read this book with an open mind. Clearly they are stuck on the issue of women working or staying at home-which is by now a mute point. We know that women who work outside the home raise children who are just as well off as those who stay at home. In fact, the idea of just one adult staying at home and doing the majority of the work of raising chidren is fairly new in terms of human experience, and is rather ineffectual. In fact, children of mothers who work outside the home are very often better off, especially if she has the support of those around her. Such children have more social experience, more role models and care-givers and mothers who have more self-confidence, better social skills, more social support, and in some cases a better income for important things that enrich a child's environment such as health care, educational opportunities, travel etc. Also, the demonizing of mothers who opt for assitance with child care is so frought with paranoia and mistrust of others, it's ridiculous! Perhaps this person should study the issues rather than make assumptions based on archaic thinking passed down through recent generations. Get your information from facts, studies and experts. Which, by the way, the author IS an expert. She is not only a "working mother" but a psychologist (meaning she has a doctoral degree-the highest level of education you can earn) who works directly with girls and their families. Only a fool would dismiss what she has to say on the subject. As a grad student with experience raising girls, this is the best book I've ever read on the subject. The author brings humor, realism and pratical advice to this difficult task. And, my favorite part, she makes you THINK About your own assumptions and helps you question the assumptions of society that end up limitng girls' potential. Apparently some people don't want to have their empirically unsupported assumptions challenged. If you are one these peope, then don't read books by experts on subjects you have already made up your mind about.
Honest but obvious.......2006-09-24
I appreciated the author's honesty and candor in describing her thought processes while raising her daughter. My problem with this book is that the conclusions of the book are obvious. The author self-admittedly spent much of her time torn between the urge to fight gender stereotyping by encouraging her girl to be as boyish as possible and the realization that urging a girl to always be boyish is pretty much the ultimate rejection of feminine worth. This subject has been sufficiently hashed out over the last decade or so, and to me the conclusions of the book seemed painfully obvious. Raising children is a difficult and disorienting task, and I appreciate the author's attempt to clarify this issue, but this is old news.
Growing a Girl: Seven Strategies.......2005-07-28
This book seems like it was written 20 years ago. It talks about making your daughter stronger by not dressing her up in "girly clothes" and encouraging sports. Girls of today are well beyond that 1950's behavior. My 8 year old expects that she will be president someday and plays boy's little league and soccer. This book is useless in 2005.
The dumbest book I have read about child-rearing.......2003-03-12
This working woman with her one child in daycare thinks she is an expert about child-rearing. Her depiction of her frenzied life--with her daughter playing only a minor role in it--is sickening. In the opening scenes, she tells a humorous tale of her attempt to raise her daughter without stereotypes, i.e., by giving her trains instead of dolls to play with. Well, guess what happened? Her daughter arranged the trains in a circle and invited them to tea! What a charming story, except that Mom didn't pick up on the inner message of this. Instead, she writes an entire book denying her daughter's reality and trying to convince us that we, too, can raise someone like her daughter, who grows up conflicted, has problems on the daycare playground, and is filled with unnamed terrors. No, thanks.
I think perhaps the most annoying aspect is this author's one-page dismissal of women who stay home with their kids. She has decided that the only reason we stay home is so we can bake cookies for school parties rather than buy them. Believe me, there are many reasons for choosing to raise one's children personally--love, commitment, a desire to mold our kids our own way. (Kids raised by loving mothers often do not eat ANY cookies, since they are bad for one's health.) As far as our being stuck at home--nothing can be farther from the truth. We have the whole world at our disposal, we are free to go wherever we want, and I pity anyone who is "stuck" in a cube all day while their kids are being raised by minimum-wage workers who are "stuck" in daycare jobs because they lack the skills to do something better. I have raised many more kids than this author (both boys and girls), and it is my hope that this author's daughter can escape the agenda that has been dumped on her. The author's own descriptions of her daughter are neither "strong" nor "spirited."
Practical advice - includes info on opposing views too!.......2002-02-07
The author has done a tremendous job of taking many experts' views of the "right" way to raise a girl, discussing their merits (pros/cons), and then giving her own recommendations. She includes specific information and tips for situations you're likely to encounter (from Barbies, to adults commenting on how beautiful your child is, to playground and friendship struggles). She doesn't come across at all with a "raise your daughter this way....or else..." attitude, but she does really get you to think about how and why you choose to react and how important it is that you understand your child even if you don't agree (empathy). A bonus is that many of the strategies apply to both boys and girls....and the chapter for fathers is truly wonderful (especially if you're unlikely to get the father to read an entire book). Also, unlike other books, this book takes you right from your daughter's infancy through teen years and beyond. It's a book you'll probably read over and over as your child reaches a new stage of development.
Bottom line: You'll learn practical tips and strategies to help keep your daughter's self-esteem strong from preschool through teen years and beyond. This book has been the favorite among my friends with girls. Best wishes to you and your girl(s)!

Opening doors for empowerment.......1998-06-26
I had a terrible teenagehood, filled with shame and fear, my religious mother and step father wanted me to be everything they weren't in their drug filled early adulthood. So I went into the world, unprepared and naive, making mistakes along the way, only to be chastised by my "well meaning" parents.
I have come full circle and desire to pass on this strength to my (now 9 1/2 year old) daughter. I love books such as "Raising Strong Daughters" because there are so many great "do to's" suggested that take the guess work out of what works and what doesn't. I don't have to make my daughter be a guinea pig experiment of being an empowered woman, I can take other women's studies and apply them to our lives.
After reading this book, I took my daughter to the Lilith Fair to see some beautifully human and real women sing. I think it sends a strong message that she can do whatever she wants to with her life. I want to cultivate that she does not have to do what society says if she doesn't want to. Well, mom doesn't anyway...
THANKS for a fab book!!

Book Description
With the goal of raising daughters to be strong, safe and self-confident, Dr. Gadeberg wrote this book to guide parents in the formation of their children with the qualities necessary to develop a successful way of living. The author invites parents to reflect on the consequences that a lack of self-esteem, insecurities and fears may have if taken into adulthood. She also offers advice, strategies and recommendations to form independent women with successful futures.
Book Description
In the wake of Pipher's book Reviving Ophelia, there has been an enormous groundswell of interest, and concern, about raising today's young girls. Yet in the African American community, there is a paucity of materials focused on mothers and daughters. As a mother of ten children, Esther Davis-Thompson understands women's concerns about raising young girls.
Continuing in the spirit of her first book, MotherLove, which was hailed by Publishers Weekly as "beautifully lyrical reflections on motherhood" and described by Feminist Bookstore News as "personal, inspiring, empowering, and timely," Esther weaves another series of powerful meditations. It is only, she proposes, by centering first on healing their own inner spirit that mothers can hope to nurture a strong, feminine spirit in today's daughters.
Written in the voice of a loving mother to her daughter, or perhaps the voice of a woman's inner Wise Woman to herself, Raising Up Queens offers a challenge to all who are raising the next generation's powerful women: "We are the generation of women who must re-start the living of what we instinctively know . . . if we will sing our most-real songs loud enough and strong enough, our daughters will come to know their own voices."

An excellent addition to parenting & Black Studies lists........2000-06-06
In Raising Up Queens, author Esther Davis-Thompson lays a foundation for mothering African-American daughters which is personal, spiritual, inspirational, and responsible. Through chapters that move the reader from Pain to Healing, from Fear to Courage, from Despair to belief, Raising Up Queens will enable the reader to get at the core of what it is to bring up their daughters to truly realize their personal and spiritual potential; to survive the crisis of violence and social neglect that so hallmark today's society; to enhance judgement and life-goal planning; and to become superlative adults and loving mothers in their own time. Raising Up Queens is an excellent and timely addition to parenting and Black Studies reading lists and reference collections.

Lunch Poems (Pocket Poets Series: No. 19)

Book Description
An unprecedented eyewitness account of the New York School, as seen between the lines of O’Hara’s poetry
Joe LeSueur lived with Frank O’Hara from 1955 until 1965, the years when O’Hara wrote his greatest poems, including “To the Film Industry in Crisis,” “In Memory of My Feelings,” “Having a Coke with You,” and the famous Lunch Poems—so called because O’Hara wrote them during his lunch break at the Museum of Modern Art, where he worked as a curator. (The artists he championed include Jackson Pollock, Joseph Cornell, Grace Hartigan, Jane Freilicher, Joan Mitchell, and Robert Rauschenberg.) The flowering of O’Hara’s talent, cut short by a fatal car accident in 1966, produced some of the most exuberant, truly celebratory lyrics of the twentieth century. And it produced America’s greatest poet of city life since Whitman.
Alternating between O’Hara’s poems and LeSueur’s memory of the circumstances that inspired them, Digressions on Some Poems by Frank O’Hara is a literary commentary like no other—an affectionate, no-holds-barred memoir of O’Hara and the New York that animated his work: friends, lovers, movies, paintings, streets, apartments, music, parties, and pickups. This volume, which includes many of O’Hara’s best-loved poems, is the most intimate, true-to-life portrait we will ever have of this quintessential American figure and his now legendary times.

Yes, 5 stars. A great book........2004-04-12
Joe LeSueur's memoir of his friend and companion, is a truly illuminating portrait of the artist. What makes these digressions so rich and rewarding for the reader, is the unique perspective LeSueur is able to bring to this material. These are LeSueur's memories of experiences and events shared with O'Hara and their myriad of friends and acquaintances. I found this book to be compelling, intimate and inspiring (indeed, "Lunch Poems" and "Selected Poems" were never too far out of reach, and both read from cover to cover). By virtue of having been a participant or, at the very least having been an eye witness to the events depicted, LeSueur has captured not just a time and place, but the essence of a cherished friend. I found myself reading slowly, savoring each passage. By the end of the book I felt I had really gotten to know O'Hara and his circle of friends, and found myself in tears as I read the last few pages. LeSueur's memoir is a tribute to Frank O'Hara as both an artist and a beloved friend.
When NY was the center of the art world and friends mattered.......2003-12-18
At Frank O'Hara's funeral, composer Virgil Thomsom turned to the poet's longtime friend Joe LeSueur and said, "Baby, I hope you kept a journal." Though clearly not drawing upon stale journal entries, LeSueur's memoir of his relationship with O'Hara (which survived the vicissitudes of its ever-changing status...friends to lovers to friends, etc.) is a nice blend of personal memories and feverish impromptu research (Brad Gooch's biography seems to have been ever at his elbow). LeSueur is neither vindictive nor pointlessly benign. He truly understood and appreciated O'Hara's central position in the explosion of art that was happening in New York in the 50s and 60s. Unlike Ginsberg and the Beat poets, O'Hara was equally at ease among literary folk, musicians, and painters (especially the abstract expressionists). To read about O'Hara is to read about the greatness of post-war New York.
DIGRESSIONS is actually helpful, too. Because O'Hara often adopted a casual, off-hand, personal approach when writing his poems, it is great to have someone who was intimate with the poet to explain "who's who" and "what's what." LeSueur, however, is equally comfortable admitting when he's baffled by an O'Hara reference, and explanations (and reminiscences) are never forced.
One other thing--DIGRESSIONS is an enlightening portrait of gay life in New York prior to the Stonewall riots. O'Hara and LeSueur were both openly gay, though they had quite different approaches to meeting their sexual needs. O'Hara seems to have had fewer partners, usually choosing them from his circle of friends and aquaintances. LeSueur seemed to favor one-night stands and casual sex. Perhaps this difference is one reason their friendship continued long after their sexual intimacy ended. If only LeSueur had lived long enough to write DIGRESSIONS ON GAY LIFE BEFORE STONEWALL.
Much more than a memoir: a revelation.......2003-07-23
Joe LeSueur has provided the cultural history of American arts in the mid-20th Century with this seamlessly interesting and informative inside perspective on the important role of Frank O'Hara - poet, art critic, champion of the visual, musical, and literary arts par excellence. DIGRESSIONS ON SOME POEMS BY FRANK O'HARA is not only a clever and viable means to writing a memoir: it provides insights into the growingly important works of O'Hara who some are now ranking as the 20th century version of Walt Whitman as Poet of the City. While many of the poems introducing each chapter are well known to us, it is the window to the world of O'Hara's life and times that is so well served by Joe LeSueur's writing. Frank O'Hara was bonded with such luminaries as Willem de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, Larry Rivers, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, Grace Hartigan, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Lincoln Kirsten, WH Auden, Kenneth Koch - the list is endless. O'Hara was a behind the scenes observor, never hogging the limelight and in fact avoiding it, always with his keen eye on good art, good music, good writing, and always turning out poems that only now are being read seriously by the general public. Joe LeSueur live with O'Hara, joining O'Hara in his flagrantly 'Out' gay life, hobnobbing with all the other gay artists of his time in a way that makes him the recorder of that important preStonewall age, a time when even the giants such as Aaron Copeland, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, etc were closeted. At times LeSueur borders on the gossipy side, but that only enhances his subject. What we are left with here is a wonderfully composed tribute to a great artist and supporter of the arts. The overall effect of this book is monumental, and at the same time exceedingly conversational. Very Highly Recommended.
among other things, a joy to read and hard to put down.......2003-05-05
This is a remarkable book. If you ever loved Frank O'Hara's poetry, the book is really a necessity. It gives personal reminiscences about the writing of some of the famous poems: 'The day Lady died', 'A true account of talking to the Sun...', etc. It brings many of the more obscure and personal poems into remarkable focus. It also illumines many of names and references that appear throughout the poems. All of this from probably the closest witness to O'Hara's life, creative and otherwise. For these reasons, it is a quite an unusual treasure.
But beyond its usefulness to O'Hara's poetry, the book is the story of a friendship. And an account of a special time in American arts and letters - told from one of the members at the party. LeSueur's presence in O'Hara's life might have been partly due to charm and good lucks (which he discusses), but that apparently never stopped him from being important to O'Hara. (The famous 'Lunch Poems' is dedicated to him.) We are fortunate that he was a careful observer and was blessed with a remarkable memory. Apparently he died shortly before the book was published, which is poignant, because the book is also a tribute to LeSueur's life, and a celebration.
Remembering a great friend.......2003-05-05
Joe LeSueur suspected himself of being related to Joan Crawford (whose real name is Lucille LeSueur) somehow so he 'deserves' to write about his friendship with one of the greatest, quirkiest, most breathtaking urban poets of all time. It was a remarkable friendship too. Verging on love, but never quite turning into, or just silent about the whole thing, playful, full of respect, full of tenderness and yet ultimately human; the quarrels, the harsh words, everything is there... The friend tiptoes around his subject, peeps through the curtain now and then, dissapears only to reappear, is by turns sad and nostalgic, funny and obscene. Frank o'hara would have loved this book.
