Introductory essays by Allan R. Millett provide a general interpretation of the history of the Marine Corps through the leadership of the Commandants and the organizational changes at Headquarters Marine Corps. Millett also outlines the contributions made by the Commandants serving since 1983. From the appointment of Samuel Nicholas in 1776 to John A. Lejeune in 1920 and Robert H. Barrow in 1979, this anthology of original essays is the first in terms of focus, research, and analysis to tell the story of the Marine Corps through the performances of its Commandants. 416 pages. 30 photographs. I havent read it yet.......2005-01-12
But any book about the marines deserves five stars as long as it is not critiscising the corps. My dad just ordered the marines workout, revised edition, and the naval academy handbook and i cant wait for them to arrive in the mail. But on topic, my uncle has this book(Im not sure where he buys his books, but i think i saw it before july 1) and he didnt complain about it so i guess its pretty good. Of course being Supreme Commandant of the Marine Corps is what any boy hoping to go to the naval academy should strive for. Although since im only human, id just like to get into the naval academy first. Oh well, now im getting ahead of myself, since im only a freshmen in high school. But the earlier i start, the better my chances are of getting in, so who cares.
I cant wait to get this book, but im not gona but it. Im kinda low on cash so im Gonna check out the library first. Then well see about buying it.

A great leader of Marines - abroad and at home.......2000-07-05
"Once A Marine," the engaging memoirs of Alexander A. Vandegrift - eighteenth Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, is a remarkable story. The story is that of a leader who dedicated forty years of his life in service to his country, his Corps, and his fellow Marines. He did it all with personal humility and without losing perspective of the Corps' role in American government and society. This book is an important part of any World War II or Marine Corps collection.
This book illustrates General Vandegrift's belief in the importance of communication, as dozens of his letters to family, friends, leaders, and fellow servicemen are included. Also included are selections from his many speeches, including the famous "bended knee" speech that he gave before Congress to state the convincing case for the very existence of the Marine Corps.
Told here is the story of Vandegrift's career, which truly spanned the globe, with service in Cuba, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, Haiti, New Zealand, Australia, China, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and American locations such as Maine, North Carolina, and Washington, DC. Throughout many actions and from the Atlantic to the Pacific, he relates his extensive service under larger-than-life figures such as Smedley Butler, Thomas Holcomb, Douglas MacArthur, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. Also, we learn that in Vandegrift's Pacific actions and campaigns, he led other Marines who would become legends in their own rights - Clifton Cates, Merritt Edson, Joe Foss, Roy Geiger, Herman Hanneken, Randolph Pate, Lewis Puller, Lemuel Sheppard, David Shoup, Julian Smith, and Holland Smith. Five of these Marines would go on to become Commandants themselves.
Vandegrift led the 1st Marine Division in its successful invasion of Guadalcanal, which was the first American offensive action in the Pacific Theater during World War II. This book gives an extensive narration of the invasion for which he ultimately received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Throughout his career, Vandegrift continued to break new ground. As Commandant, he was the first Marine four-star general on active duty.
In a large downtown park in my city, there is a monument dedicated to Marines fallen in combat. General Vandegrift was present and dedicated the monument on November 11th, 1947. From reading this book, I learned that in Washington, DC Vandegrift had named his successor only the day before, on November 10th - the 172nd birthday of the Marine Corps. The fall of 1947 also saw Vandegrift and the Corps emerge successful from the final round of a multiyear struggle for the continuation of the Marine Corps as a separate and distinct service. Vandegrift's dedication, honesty, humility, and foresight for the future of the Corps lead the way in this momentous struggle.
It is often said that Marines do not leave their dead behind. As General Alexander A. Vandegrift, in the twilight of his career, stood at the monument to fallen brothers-in-arms on that rainy November day, he proved that saying to be right. After reading this book, you will know the character that makes up such a great leader.

As recommended by my graduate instructor, I used this book as a resource for my counseling internship and have helped me devise exercises for clients with anger management problems. It addresses the different angles of anger - including nutrition! in the most user-friendly and accessible manner. It is chock-full of practical steps designed to address different sets of client needs. Do not be fooled by the date of publication - this book is as current today as it was when it was first published.

One of the finest, if not the finest book of its kind. People who are interested in this item need to understand that it requires actual effort, and the results are usually going to be correlated to the effort put in.
A very practical, helpful and effective workbook........1999-11-10
This workbook is a very effective, practical and useful tool to better understand and manage anger. As with all self-help workbooks, the reader must be serious about learning or fixing their own anger problem. I found it very relieving and a source of peace to finally have a solution to the problem of anger.I coupled it with my Christian beliefs and found it effective. The author understands the problem and deals with it in on-nonsense fashion. But, the reader must WORK at the process. If you're angery and don't know why or if you're angry and want to fix the problem, save the $110.00 per hour you'll pay a shrink and do this book first...they are probably copying his outline anyway!

If you love dogs and the help they give humans, you will love this book. It speaks of independence gained living with a trained canine, the dedication of the trainers of these dogs and humans, and has some humor. It speaks of the importance of recognizing these dogs as working dogs and not pets, and of allowing them the access they are legally entitled to. I couldn't put it down and wanted more.

Don't waste your time.......2007-05-24
Unless you enjoy fixing bad/misleading/incomplete patterns, I wouldn't encourage you to buy this book. I had bought several books on kitted toys all at once, and after several successful teddy bears opened this book. After trying to make several different toys from this one, I finally gave up and threw the book out. Sure, an experienced knitter would be able to adjust the patterns, but then an experienced knitter could design better toys than this, for the same amount of effort.

Pretty good book; some drawbacks.......2006-11-07
Personally, I like alot of the projects in this book, and I like that they're so colorful -- you're making this for children, after all. I'm not crazy about the dolls or some of the animals, but I like about half the projects, which is pretty good. They do look very handmade, which gives them character, but some of them just look sloppy and unpolished, but that's just me.
Positives:
-Nice, clear pictures of the finished products, from different angles.
-Pretty easy patterns
-Easy-to-follow directions
-Good variety of projects: you have animals (some have clothes), (including two bunnies, two teddies, penguin, pig, monkey, turtle, zebra, duck, a big long puppy, and fish); dolls with clothes (a boy and a girl, a clown, a fairy/angel decorative toy, and a princess); several varieties of finger puppets; decorative little bugs; and a ball for babies.
Negatives:
-WHY does one need three varieties of finger puppets? Honestly, I could have figured out the variations by myself.
-Some of the toys look TOO handmade, but that's just a matter of personal taste
-I have this book in Russian translation, so I'm not sure if the problem exists in the English book, but some critical instructions are missing. For example, for the monkey's arms, it never says how many rows to knit, and for the fish, it doesn't say to make TWO body pieces.
-Some instructions are nebulous (Are we increasing or making a stitch?)
-Poor joining/assembly instructions. You can figure it out by looking at the pictures of the finished products, though.
Adorable patterns, but not for beginners.......2006-06-27
The toys are just precious, and if they're too "gaudy" for you, play with the color palette and make 'em what YOU like! Also, you can use ANY yarn you want for a toy --- c'mon, a difference in gauge will only make a bigger or smaller toy! It doesn't have to fit anyone. :)
I found the pattern instructions easy to follow. There is a lot of seaming though, and I think the author could have included clearer seaming instructions (as opposed to "join pieces together"). I've tried lots of methods and haven't been able to come up with one that produces seams as neat and pretty as the photos in the book.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2006-06-09
These toys have real personality. The author has an artist's eye and a sculptor's touch. These patterns knit up into animals that people can't believe are hand-made. I have knitted several of them so far to RAVE REVIEWS, and not just from the adults. The kids adore them too.
This book is perfect for me. I am an advanced beginner knitter and an advanced beginner sewer. I get bored easily. And I don't care for double pointed needles (though I wouldn't say "intimidated" is the right word"). So I LOVE making lots of little pieces and figuring out how to fit them together.
I agree with the other reviewers that writing out the instructions row-by-row is helpful -- but so what? Is there a better way to get familiar with the pattern? And I'd rather see lots of good, clear photos than lengthy, roundabout, written sewing instructions.
Sure, there's the occasional mistake (easily corrected by someone with a little bit of knitting experience) and the gauges aren't always exactly accurate. But, luckily, stuffed animals don't have to fit anyone, so if a bunny is a little shorter and fatter or a dog is a little longer and narrower, it doesn't matter. And since knitted work is elastic, two pieces are easy enough to fit together even if the gauge is a little off. If you are obsessive (like I am), you can always knit a swatch, measure it, and adjust the number of stitches or rows.
And let's cut knitting authors a break for using brand names. Movie producers use product placements just to make a few more bucks on multi-million dollar films. Why shouldn't an author have a little sponsorship? Let's face it, these books aren't best sellers. The yarns recommended are very nice, and if you can't substitute one brown worsted for another you should be buying kits instead of books.

The book that we have been waiting for.......2002-09-14
The amount of work that has gone into this excellent book shows clearly in the clear writing and great images throughout. Not everything is Bonsai now, we are learning about other cultures, and their path to what we find is a mutual interest. This is not a book about Vietnamese Bonsai at all but a book about creating landscape in miniature. Popular for many centuries but little know outside its home, Hon Non Bo is exciting in concept and immensely pleasurable in developing. Not difficult as an art form but does need this book to explain to you how to get started and how to develop your understanding of this ancient art. I enjoyed the book and found myself reaching for it a number of times this year. I recommended it to all my classes, friends and students.
Produced by one of the worlds leading Horticultural publishers, Timber Press, the guiding hand of the editor is apparent in the demand for concise and clear explanation throughout the book that reflects the quality of the rest of their excellent publications. The task was very well achieved by Lew Buller who developed and wrote the book over many years with one of Americas leading exponents in this art, Lit van Phan.
You really do need this on your bookshelf although I have a feeling it will rarely stay there.

I bought this book approximately four years ago when I had the pleasure to meet the author, Mr. Charles Harnett.
This book is filled with tips on care and maintenance for most species of bonsai.
It is an easy read and really covers the questions anyone might ask about watering, sunlight, fertilization, potting, re-potting and many, many other topics.
It also covers how to spot and buy a true bonsai and not what most people think are true bonsai. The author details the differences between the two.
Having a long history with bonsai, beginning with military service under a master in Japan, the author's experience shines through clearly.
I have also had the privilege to buy two trees from the authors business and have had them for four years and counting. I have used his tips in their care since day one.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who would like to explore the world of Bonsai.

This is a really good book for beginners altought it can be used for more expertise bonsai makers. It has most comun techniques used to make and mantain a bonsai. Is also have beautiful ilustrations. It holds many examples to make it simpler.
I think that this book is a realy good choice for some one that whant to begin or know more about Bonsai.

Possibility therapy, originated by Bill O'Hanlon, is about acknowledging and validating clients' felt experience and ideas about their lives while ensuring that possibilities for change are discovered and amplified. The book outlines this humorous, compassionate approach to action-oriented therapy. Each method is defined, explained, and illustrated in a page or two. By the end the reader has a huge selection of strategies and an enlightening map of possibility land.

One liners and mildly interesting .......2007-04-05
As a psychotherapist I was also excited to check out some new brief therapy ideas. However like a few other reviewers I found the book to be a collection of cases that offered pithy one liners and quick come backs to people exhibiting genuine pain and difficulty. I'm not sure what the point is in dismissing their concerns as silly or shutting them down. It seemed belittling to me. One case comes to mind where a client was expressing that they feel their personality is lacking and the retort was "I guess you need a personality transplant!" Well, now that their concern has been mocked where do you go from there? Do you do the transplant or laugh it off and dismiss their issue? I don't know what the author intended next because each case ends with the punch line. I expect a drum roll at the end of every page.
Great resource to bring a fresh perspective to your work!.......2002-11-08
I'm a psychologist practicing in a college counseling center, and I love this book! This slim, easy-to-read volume contains a plethora of strategies which encourage you to view client problems from a new, solutions-oriented perspective. Each strategy is presented in a simple, one-page description that includes both a rationale for the technique as well as specific examples of how to use the technique with clients. The strategies are divided into five main categories: Carl Rogers with a Twist, Change the Viewing, Map Problem and Goals, Connect with Internal and External Resources, and Change the Doing. The book is laced with humor--e.g., goofy drawings and therapist lightbulb jokes at the end--and the techniques themselves frequently illustrate how to draw humor into the therapeutic process. At times, O'Hanlon seems to take this a bit too far, with the risk being that his methods will appear invalidating to the client, but I believe that his strategies can be adapted so that this is not the case. Furthermore, the tools offered in this book are compatible with all theoretical orientations and presenting problems. This is an excellent book for helping all therapists stay fresh and engaged in their work, and it is the one therapy handbook that I always turn to when I'm feeling stuck with a client.
A vade mecum for creating possibilities.......2001-04-09
I gave 4 stars in an earlier review which was lost in the transfer. After re-reading the book, I like it even more. This is not a book that some people will take to right away. It is more like notes or hand-out on 51 therapeutic techniques. The line drawings of animals by Sandy Beadle have nothing to do with the content. The authors admit that this is a "weird collaboration". When you look through the book again and again, the animals take on personality and emotions. It is amazing that a few simple lines can be so expressive. You can just enjoy the art-work. The sketchy descriptions of each method, with "defintion, rational, examples", are like the line drawings, simple in outline, but very rich in meaning. They follow the general order of O'Hanlon's Possibility Therapy: 1. Acknowledgement and Possibility. 2. Change the Viewing. 3. Problems and Goals. 4. Resources. 5. Change the Doing. You get the flavour of O'Hanlon's wisdom, his use of stories and simple language and his sense of humour. You can easily understand why he has been so popular and successful and even appeared on Oprah's Show. These methods can possibly be developed into game cards not only for therapists, but for anyone interested in growth. With any skills, we need to practise. This book helps us to practise in smaller steps and acquire new outlooks and behavior for a more creative living.
Disappointing Book.......2000-02-15
This book was very disappointing. The idea behind the techniques is a good one, however the execution and context of these is off. They come across as disrespectful and patronizing. The authors' style of presentation of the material is annoying as well.

It is a seventeen-year saga which saw the firing of the first curator, the death of the donor, and the creation of six complete sets of plans and 749 drawings. Ironically, Wright died six months before its completion.
From its opening in October 1959, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum has been recognized as Frank Lloyd Wright’s crowning achievement. Pfeiffer demonstrates that the story of its construction is arresting drama as well. The Guggenheim, while periodically modified and adapted to meet its changing needs, continues to give expression to Wright’s artistic vision and is a testament to the spirit of both Wright and Guggenheim.
