Corregidor: From Paradise To Hell.......2007-09-23
I am lucky enough to have met Ben Waldron through family members that know him. I am not related to him in any way, but after reading this book, I feel that I know him better than some of my own family. This is a gripping true story of Ben's life, narrated by Ben, of leaving his family at 18 years old during the depression and joining the Army. Ben kept a diary for the three and a half years that he was kept as Prisoner of War under the Japanese. This book will take you through all of your emotions, and you will be left awestruck, bewildered, angry, sickened, happy and well informed about life as a soldier and as a POW during WWII.
Corregidor From paradise to hell.......2007-04-02
Excellent book. I read it in one sitting because it was impossible for me to set it down. The author tells the story in real language with no extra words. It really shows the horrors of being a prisoner of war.
Customer Reviews:
A POW's factual review of 4 years in a Japanese prison.......2003-09-26
This is a book written by my uncle Ben Waldron. His experiences from the age of 18 to over 22 years old while being a prisoner in a Japanese prison camp is factual in detail from a diary he secretly kept for 4 years. This is a piece of history that the young people of the US should learn from. After reading, his account of treatment as a POW for 4 years nothing can compare to POW's sacrifice as a soldier for his country. What is happening in the world today is tragic but it hasn't continued for four years. What kept these men going and surviving unbelievable treatment should be studied by our Military. What price freedom is explained in this book. Our county owes those men who died and lived through this chapter in our history the price of freedom we enjoy today. As a parent this book is required reading for your son, the experience of what others went through for us.

Great stories, subtle humor..........2001-06-01
I found this book by accident in a gift shop, and because of the title and cover photo, was intrigued by it. The author's name was familiar---I realized that I had worked with Dr. Payan at a small hospital in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the early 1980's when he was a pathologist there and I was an ER nurse. Naturally, I wanted to read his story of coming to America. I found it to be a delightful read. His stories are well told, there's a subtle humor waiting to break out in many of them. He has carefully told the details of everday life growing up in Iran. There are stories that are compassionate and moving of his experiences as a young physician, and others that are a sad commentary of how those new to the US are sometimes treated. I would definitely recommend it as an enjoyable read.

Book Description
As seen in Self, Fitness, Real Simple, Health, Ladies' Home Journal, and Redbook, this much-praised celebration of women's friendships-now in paperback-explores the keys to forming emotionally supportive and sustaining connections at every stage in life.Embraced by some of the most popular women's magazines, this book has struck a chord with women everywhere who know that finding close friends as an adult isn't easy. Most women rely heavily on their friendships with other women to share their joy and see them through the rough spots, but common life changes-having a baby, leaving a job, moving to a new town, starting an at-home business, becoming divorced or widowed-not only make it difficult to forge new ties but often fray the ones we already have. Marla Paul brings together the moving personal experiences of many different women with the keen insights of psychologists and other relationship experts in "her wise and helpful book on this much neglected subject," says Harriet Lerner, Ph.D.
Customer Reviews:
The "Female Middle-Age" Friendship Crisis.......2007-09-20
The title is somewhat misleading. Ms. Paul is not addressing this topic from a gender-neutral perspective, though the topic is certainly large enough to warrant a separate treatment. Instead, this work addresses some of the more specific aspects of female friendships. Measured against that metric, the work is very well organized, complete, and empowering (and a quick read). Or at least I think it is, as being male I can only infer so much.
The author acknowledges early on this is a "for women" book, but I decided to read through it anyway, with the goal of trying to map the subject matter into a more widely applicable set of principles for all friendships. If you work at it, you can do that with about 40% of the material: friends break up, people's relative situations change that require them discuss and adjust the friendship, the role of the internet and friendships with large age differences. There is some subject matter here useful for all.
Still, the work was written for women, and much of the time you can't work around that. Indeed, parts of it are downright hostile to men, as if they have a different capacity for friendship than women. From the book, pg. 100: "A man whips into his relationship toolbox - tiny as it is - and tries to fix a problem with a wrench twist of advice. Now, could you please hand him the remote and make some popcorn." Or this: "Females are hardwired to turn to other women in times of stress....A guy may brood on his La-Z-Boy. Women call a friend.", which just scream of gender bias.
If you read past those parts, you can get some value from this book. I think the Robert Putnam book "Bowling Alone", which she quotes in several places, might offer better coverage of the more general topic.
Misleading title.......2007-01-11
I bought this book and its totally useless for men. It only refers to women, married or widoved ones, possibly with kids. What are we guys supposed to do??? Why limit the book to women only? I felt like everybody ignores men's solitude problems. If you write such a book, then you ahould state it clearly in the title or subtitle that it wont help guys.
A little disappointed.......2006-07-26
I really wanted to like this book as I felt the subject matter was so timely for what I've been going through, as a single, childless, woman in her late 30's. However, like many other reviewers said, it mostly fell short for me. I've tried, multiple times, many of the things the author suggests. Much of the book was written for women with children, however, I did read the entire book despite this fact. I consider myself shy and there's even a chapter about that - but I gleaned nothing from this chapter that I haven't already tried without much avail. I do think the author means well and although I really "liked" her, from what I could glean as she wrote about herself, I didn't find this book to be as helpful as I'd hoped.
Not just for married women w/ children.......2006-04-26
Another reviewer states this book is just relevant for women who are married and most likely have children. Not the case. Also, not the case that women without children have to make all the "sacrifices" to work around the schedule of those who do. You just need to be more aware and accomodating of things that go on in your friends' lives (you don't have to have children to lead a very busy life, you know). It's give and take and it's better not to keep score.
I don't have children, but I really benefited from reading the entire book because it showed me points of view and lifestyles that are different from my own. It helped me determine what I may have done wrong in the past (esp. related to my friends that have had children or got married long before I did--when our lives took very different paths) and what I could've done to save and preserve those friendships. I almost didn't read the chapter on losing a husband thru divorce or death because I didn't think it pertained to me. But it does...because most likely some day I will have a friend who loses her husband and it taught me how to help her and showed me her point of view--what she would want from me as her friend.
It's not just about finding and making friends. It's also about being a good friend to the ones you've got--married, single, with, or without children.
Thank you, Marla Paul, for writing this book!
too generalized .......2006-04-22
The problem for me is that the author gives generalized advice without specifics. She has a good heart, and it's mostly about don't feel bad don't take it personally if someone doesn't want to be your friend. Book is not about why women lose friends all the time, and the destructive competitiveness. I found the book is a little too positive and not realistic enough.

Good basic foods.......2002-02-10
The book offers very easy to make dishes that need only a few ingredients. Some are very good as they are but many offer themselves as a springboard to making dishes of your own. There are great "how to" type photos. The nutritional information they give for each dish is nice too.

The Best cookbooks I have ever had!.......2005-03-30
As soon as I took the books out their package I knew I would love them, and as soon as I started to turn each page, I was so amazed at the quality of the book. I highly recommend it. It is packed with beautiful pictures and excellent recipes. I bought this book after reading other reviews about them. I purchased Vol.I,II. Both are amazing and are my favorite cookbooks so far. Now I am going to purchase both for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day!
Absolutely amazing!.......2004-06-19
When I first got this book as a gift I wondered to myself "how good can some collection of random people's recipes be?" After trying a few of the recipes I discovered that the answer was "VERY good." Now I just need to find Volume I.
This is an incredibly diversified mix of American cooking recipes in easy-to-read sections and bright and beautiful color photographs. The sections include: poutry, meats, fish & seafood, soups & stews, pasta rice & legumes, salads & dressings, vegetables, breads muffins & sandwiches, cakes & cookies, desserts, and appetizers beverages & snacks.
I have never had a bad experience with any of the recipes in this book. For that reason it has earned its place with my other two all-time favorite cookbooks "Betty Crocker Cooking Basics" and "Farmhand's Favorite Pies" as an "ACK! Company's Coming!" type of cookbook... a book that I can run and grab off the shelf and with a little bit of effort turn out a flawless and decadent meal.
Just in case you were wondering, my favorite recipe in this book is that of "Grasshopper Bars" featured on page 366. It's a fudgy brownie base topped with a sinfully rich mint cream, and a cool chocolate topping. Try it; you'll LOVE IT!
Diversified Hometown Recipes.......2001-07-19
Each little town has probably put out a small cookbook sometime, Best Loved Community Recipes highlights the tastiest.
You'll find tried and true favorites along with new twists on old recipes. Eggplant Appetizers, Mary's Cheeseball, and Mini Calzones could spice up a gathering.
If you need a good basic recipe like Caramel Corn, Oatmeal Bread, or Hot Cross Buns- this is your cookbook.
From muffins to rolls, cookies, cakes and pies, you'll find what you need. Try the delicious Apple Dessert Pancake, I served it for dinner one night with rave reviews!
Grand recipes for fish and seafood as well as meats, pizzas and noodle dishes fill the 464 pages.
Do yourself or someone else a favor and add this cookbook to your collection. Your crew will thank you time and time again.
Fantastic.......2001-06-08
America's Best Loved Community Recipes Better Homes and Gardens Published by: BH&G ISBN:0-696-200095-3
Imagine if you could sit down and open a book of your Grandmothers, Aunts and Ladies of the Church Auxiliary's favorite recipes. That is exactly what this book is. Imagine being able to bake that perfect egg custard pie just like your Grandmother used to make. Or perhaps make that wonderful chicken casserole like Mrs. Smith in the church choir. You never could get her to write down what that secret ingredient was.
It takes all the recipes from the many community cookbooks from around the United States and picks out the most popular and requested ones. They are then nicely pictured with a photograph of the finished dish as well as illustrations on how to do some of the techniques. Also included is information about the cookbook it was taken from and a quote or information from the person who contributed it
Reaching for this cookbook is just like reaching out to touch a dear and trusted friend. Not only are all the ingredients listed but also those techniques you are a little unsure about are explained well and then they are illustrated also. I was never sure how the best way was to take the skin off chicken pieces and this book shows exactly where to start and how the pieces should look when you are finished
Throw the rest of your cookbooks out!.......2001-02-23
This is by far my favorite cookbook. It is wonderfully laid out, and every recipe I've tested has been wonderfully delicious. Every friend I've lent it to has gone out and bought their own copy, after deciding that they'd like copies of more than half the recipes!!! Every recipe has a finished product picture, complete list of ingredients in a sidebar, step-by-step instructions with pictures if anything is unclear, as well as tips and tricks (e.g. if something can be done ahead of time)
It's not like the type of cookbooks where you can look up a chocolate chip cookie recipe and make it... but I've made approximately 15% of the recipes so far and loved each one. I highly recommend Better Home and Gardens America's Best-Loved Community Recipes Volume I and II. My favorite recipes are in Volume I, though it's somewhat difficult to find. Also, don't loan this out, I've had to buy another copy of Volume II because my first one was borrowed and never returned.

Thumbing through this book with my mother, I felt like a child again. All the desserts I grew up on were pictured here.Seeing the names of the towns where the recipe came from, felt like that person made the treat just for me. I have tried many of the recipes and my family and friends rave of my culinary skills. (thanks to the wonderful recipes) This is a book that has to be tried. It will become a favorite in your home like it has in mine.

Make your whole family smile.......2001-01-04
I found this book at my local library and by the last page I knew I had to own this cookbook. Since it was out of print I thought I would have to zerox every page. Fortunately I found out there were used copies available. Every recipe is easy and can be made with little effort. It is nicely organized into three basic catergories, poultry, meat, and seafood. They range from simple down home buttermilk fried chicken & biscuits to a restaurant nite-out scaloppine. Easy follow directions with basic pantry ingredients.

A must for every grower!!.......2001-06-20
This book is a must have for every grower. It should not be the sole resource for information, but a reference guide for the beginner to the advanced grower. I find myself referring back the pages frequently to pick up some hidden or forgotton hints. The book is definately an integral part in the success in my garden.
Past History.......2001-05-05
High Times is resting on its history. This re-hash of old cultivation articles contributes very little to someone setting up a garden with what's going on today as far as equipment and hardware. Better to subscribe to the magazine than rely on these tired methods.
High Times, Low Value as Primary Grow Guide.......2000-05-19
Yes, there is a wealth of information in this growing guide, some of it state of the art; that is not the issue. It is a compilation of articles from past issues, and there is a lack of cohesiveness to the content that makes it a poor growing guide for beginners; there is also more contradiction betweeen authors than is helpful. The book is best suited for somewhat experienced growers, looking for esoteric tips to perfect their craft, while exploring a spectrum of diverse and newer ideas. In the later context, it has greater value. For the novice it is a supplimental text to be used in conjuction with any number of more teachable growing guides. Lastly, the book would have benefited from a good index, but it has no index at all.
GROW GROW GROW!.......2000-02-07
I have recently purchased this wonderful grow guide. It is definatly a good fact filled book ideal for any grower. I have purchased many other grow guides but they don't hold a candle to this one,it has in depth facts and tips . I gave this particular guide a rating of 5 because in my eyes you will not find a better. So , happy growing.

Lots of helpful hints.......1998-08-30
This book is a good resource for uncommon (but viable) methods of cleaning while also focusing on ways to save the earth, such as using non-toxic cleaning elements (alcohol, vinegar, baking soda, etc.) rather than chemical products that can harm children and pets. This is a great guide book when you have exhausted (or even before you have exhausted) your options and/or your wallet.

This book has turned out to be real handy whenever little mishaps (like suddenly noticing too much dust on a mini-blind) occur. But, having attended college with her, I think Heloise Jr. could've done a bit better. I know she changed the course of MY life after I had one of her special brownies about 20 minutes before a piano solo I had to perform before an audience of professors as part of a final exam. Suffice it say, I'm a lousy but happy housewife now.
