Book Description
George Armstrong Custer, who famously made his last stand at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, first achieved notoriety more than ten years earlier for his daring military exploits during the Civil War. Graduating (last in his class) in 1861 from West Point, he quickly joined the fighting, and went on to take part in nearly every major battle of the war. In 1863, he was promoted brigadier general-the youngest general in the Union army-and given charge of the Michigan cavalry brigade, which he dubbed "Wolverines." The Wolverines fought ferociously from 1863 to the end of the war under its flamboyant commander. Longacre covers in dramatic detail the brigade's critical defense of the Union line at Gettysburg, and the brigade's key role in surrounding Lee's army at Appomattox. By war's end, the Wolverines had gained the respect and admiration of the entire Union army for its bravery, and the brigade's famous red ties, emulating Custer, had become a well-known badge of pride and honor. "A fine study of this famous command...a worthy addition to Longacre's previous works." ( Blue & Gray Magazine)

Book Description
How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! is a breezy, chatty, non-technical, fun-to-read explanation of low carbohydrate dieting -- why it works, the surprising health benefits, and most importantly, how to "do" the diet. Or, rather, diets, since the book details three very different main approaches to controlling carbohydrates (including the Basic Low Carb Diet, similar to Atkins or Protein Power, and the Mini-Binge Diet, popularized as The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), plus several variations, finally summing up the basic principles which tie them all together. The point is to give the reader the tools necessary to construct a new way of eating that will fit his or her body, psyche, and lifestyle, thus allowing them to stay slim, energetic, and healthy for life.

Just Okay...Too Many Contradictions........2007-09-03
Dana Carpender uses the entire book explaining all of the other carb diets out there. She doesn't explain much about the diet she is on. That would have been helpful.
I was irritated from the beginning of the book Dana was degrading this television commercial with a child in it who says something about changing up on the flavor of juice drinks because her "tongue gets tired" and Dana flies off the handle saying that the kid should be "lucky" to have food everyday. Doesn't Dana know that the advertisers wrote the script for the kid and the kid didn't make up those words on her own? Could Dana really be that stupid and naive?
Dana never gives an outline of how to orchestrate your own diet or what she exactly does. She basically says, "Here are all the low-carb diets out there. Pick your own and good luck."
She doesn't indicate what she does directly with any specifics. Does she each 100 carbs per day? 50 carbs? Less? It would have been useful to know what SHE does. It's so vague that you really don't know.
Then she says at the beginning of the book that low-carb living has to be a LIFESTYLE and you have to prepare yourself to NEVER eat pastas, white flour, potatoes, and cereal again. However, later on she says that you should have about 6 "cheat" days in a year including your birthday, Christmas, etc. Huh? Which is it? Again, she really isn't specific on what SHE does. First she'll say that she "never" eats cereal, sweets, etc. then says that she has her "cheat" days too. Okay...
I had such high hopes for this book and felt let down. I wished she outlined her own diet instead of everyone else's out there. The title of the book, as I recall, is "How I gave up my low-fat diet and lost 40 pounds" and NOT "How you can pick and choose one of these MANY low-carb diets and maybe you'll lose weight depending on whether you choose the right diet."
I do, however, recommend her two "500 Low-Carb Recipe" books. I have them both and they are excellent!
great book.......2007-07-21
This book has been a great help for me. I have tried a few diets, but have not felt as good as I do with this one, both physically and mentally. I have totally changed my diet. I have been on it for 3 weeks and not cheated once.
I have a new perspective on food and am leading a better and healthier life thanks to Dana Carpender. I also have her 500 recipes book and have now ordered her carb count book too.
Easy read. Information you can find online........2007-07-15
I read this book after I jumped on the low-carb bandwagon and it was a good, personalized rehash of what you might read in any of the popular low-carb guides; cut the refined garbage and eat "real" food.
Carpender is a very readable author and I made it through the book in a couple of hours. Granted, I skimmed through much of what she wrote because I already knew it, but I enjoyed the read nonetheless.
I give the book only 3 stars for two reasons: (1) the information is nothing terribly new or difficult to find online and (2) there are no before/after photos. I suppose that is just a personal preference but it's nice to see that something works by seeing "proof" in the book!
If you are looking to lose weight and want a fun, non-threatening, non-scientific introduction to eating lower-carb, this is a great book for the job.
Personally, I recommend either of George Stella's books. He writes in a very friendly, personable way that I really enjoy.
I'd recommend getting this one from the library!
Terrific.......2007-07-07
This book was just what I needed. I feel absolutely wonderful since starting this about 4 weeks ago. I'm also 14 lbs. lighter.
You don't have to go on a low-carb diet to benefit from this book!.......2007-07-02
In this book, author Dana Carpender presents information about low-carb eating in a straightforward, easy-to-read manner. Although the book is mainly geared towards helping people shift to a low-carb lifestyle--which the author clearly advocates--I believe that it is also a useful reference manual for those, like myself, who don't plan to give up their carbs just yet. Since I'm not overweight or otherwise unhealthy, I don't think a low-carb diet is necessary for me. However, I do know that monitoring my carb intake is important for maintaining my weight, and that's why I found this book to be so helpful.
Carpender does an excellent job of breaking down all of the major low-carb diets. She herself follows what she calls "The Basic Low-Carbohydrate Diet," which is typified by both Dr. Atkins and Drs. Eades, authors of Protein Power. However, she also reviews several variations on this basic plan, including the GO-Diet (this one appealed to me), the Zone, the Carbohydrate's Addict's Diet, and others, even a vegetarian version. Particularly helpful to me was the emphasis on protein (a great shake recipe is included) and fiber, as I know that my higher intake of these two essentials will aid me in reducing my carb consumption. In this way, Carpender is promoting sensible ways of eating that are appropriate for everyone, not just low-carb dieters.
Regardless of whether you are planning to go on a low-carb diet or not, Carpender's book will definitely challenge your past assumptions about what is "healthy" and help you to make better food choices for the future.

Great, delicious easy meal........2005-03-28
This cookbook is filled with easy and inexpensive recipes. The recipes center around a vegetarian kitchen that relies on staples such as pasta, beans, grains, etc. Even if you don't usually have these things on hand, they are easy to find and inexpensive.
Most recipes are hearty and enjoyable for vegetarians and non-vegetarians a like. My only complaint is that of the hundreds of recipes, there are pictures of only a fraction of them.
yummy healthy vegetarian gourmet for less money.......2002-01-30
the recipes are ultra easy to prepare...sounds expensive and

A must for any kitchen!.......2000-06-19
Several recipes in this book have become staples in my family. They are well thought out and easy to prepare. Every recipe I've tried was absolutely savory! We are not vegetarians, but find that we don't miss meat when we dig into this book. I've just become pregnant and have found many recipes that will accomodate my new dietary requirements. Whether your looking for whole meals or for side-dishes you'll find recipes that meet your needs and that you and your family will love.
Excellent, healthy, simple.......2000-01-16
This is definitely my most used cookbook. The recipes are simple, ingredients easy to find, and the food is truly healthy and delicious. Even my meat and potatoe friends like it. You can plan way ahead with these meals, since the ingredients will keep for a week usually, which makes preparation even more convenient.

The Best Cat Story in the World.......2007-05-16
May Sarton, poet and journal-writer extraorindaire, wrote a novella/poem to the Cat, the Gentleman Cat, called "The Fur Person". I have reread this masterpiece every year for the past 25 years. "The Fur Person" is for children and adults, for everyone!
Treasured Gift Book for Cat Lovers.......2007-05-13
May Sarton is an insightful writer in all of her books. Although I am not a cat lover, I read the book first before deciding whether or not my cat-lover reader friends would enjoy this book. I know they will. The hardcover edition is especially nice for a gift. The illustrations in the book are a treasure as well.
Cats Rule!.......2007-01-11
This book was given to me as a gift and after reading it I promptly bought 4 from Amazon to give as gifts for the holidays. The author has truly captured her cat's essence. It's beautifuly written and tells just how much love a cat needs and gives. I highly recommend this book.
A Really Great Book.......2007-01-11
This is a good book both children and adults. Couldn't wait to read the next chapter.
The best cat book ever!.......2006-08-18
This is such a wonderful book. It is short and easy to read, but so well written, by the late poet May Sarton. It is the story of her cat, Tom Jones. When the fur person decided it was time to settle down and find a home, he found Ms. Sarton and her partner, and became a precious part of their family. This book makes a very great gift for any cat lover. Unbelievably, it has been out of print from time to time. Thank goodness it is available both in paperback and a gift edition now.

Book Description
Despite the striking frequency with which the Greek word kyrios, Lord, occurs in Luke's Gospel, this study is the first comprehensive analysis of Luke's use of this word. The analysis follows the use of kyrios in the Gospel from beginning to end in order to trace narratively the complex and deliberate development of Jesus' identity as Lord. Detailed attention to Luke's narrative artistry and his use of Mark demonstrates that Luke has a nuanced and sophisticated christology centered on Jesus' identity as Lord.

Elegance for the Eyes & Ideas.......2006-11-01
Kitty Pippen broke new ground with her first book, Quilting with Japanese Fabrics, and I consider it a "must have book" for anyone with more than a passing interest in Japanese fabrics. Ms. Pippen and her daughter, Sylvia, have pushed the boundaries further with this book, Asian Elegance, which incorporates polynesian and Japanese fabrics, design elements and ideas. Well done Pippens!
Since her first book, many of the Japanese fabrics that were so readily available are rare. Many traditional Japanese fabric makers are no longer manufacturing, or have modernized or moved to other countries. The quilts in the new book reflect some of these changes. Fabrics are more contemporary, embrace polynesian elements, and generally are available at most quilt and fabric stores or from resources listed in the book. All in all, this is a book to inspire, and grow your ideas. The elements of graceful design are timeless. It's worth the investment.
Asian Elegance-Quilting with Japanese Fabrics and more.......2006-03-18
Also a great book along with Quilting with Japanese Fabrics which I purchased at the same time. I will get a great deal of pleasure from the many ideas in the book. It's a pity I didnt realise that is was in american dollars and not australian but nevertheless it was a great purchase.
Thank you and keep me informed of any other great quilting books to buy.
Thank you very much once again.
Beautiful!.......2005-09-09
This is a beautiful book - even if you don't make the quilts as presented here, they inspire you to bring simplicity and calmness to your quilting designs. The directions are logical and easy to follow and the pictures speak volumes! Give it a try!
Get the other one instead.......2004-06-15
I love Kitty Pippen's first book, Quilting with Japanese Fabrics. This book is nice, but I don't think it covers a lot of new territory. If you can buy both her books, great, but if you can only buy one, I'd recommend the other one over this.

Customer Reviews:
Great ideas for Seattle dads -- and very funny too!.......2006-01-19
THE ONLY GUIDE BOOK RECOMMENDING THE TOWN DUMP AS A TOP ATTRACTION! As a Dad of two small children living in Tacoma, Washington, I heartily recommend this book to you other Dads in the Seattle-Tacoma area looking for activities enjoyable for your kids AND you!
I received this book as a gift from my children for Christmas, and it ended up getting passed around between everyone all morning because it is hilarious! It is an incredibly entertaining, easy read and there are some really great ideas in here from someone who obviously has a lot of experience entertaining children in Seattle. Every listed attraction includes a summary plus an awesome "bore-o-meter" which rates the attraction on things like machinery, loudness, largeness, sugar and rhythm -- not typical categories of merit, but very applicable if you have kids!
There's even a Dad Duty "Cheat Sheet" that includes a quick listing of attractions, along with bore-o-mete ratings, duration and drive time. I suggest tearing this out and keeping it on your fridge or in your wallet for quick ideas on the go.
Here's an excerpt that explains Vent's philosophy in a nut shell: "Avoid the 'riums' and 'seums' such as aquarium, planetarium, museum, auditorium...ad nauseum! Save these outings for the in-laws and school fieldtrips. Don't worry, your kids will get cultured, but you can concentrate on adventures that knock your kids' sock off - or, at least get something useful done like a trip to the dump."
If that rings true for you, then you will definitely get your money's worth out of this book.
