A life well lived........2004-09-06
Clinton Gardner has participated in many of the most important events of the past century seeking to bring peace to our world. This autobiography details his participation in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, the Berlin airlift, and the establishment of his Bridges for Peace organization.
He presents a cogent overview of the philosophy of his Dartmouth Professor, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy, linking this with the Russian philosophers he has studied over his lifetime. As he presents his interest in Russian philosophy he gives an excellent overview of this often overlooked school of philosophy in the U. S.
The book is well written, informative, and persuasive. It should be required reading in general history and philosophy courses at the university level.
Book Description
This book guides us on a fascinating journey into Freud`s past to examine the roots of his atheism. Taking a fresh look at the data about Freud`s development and life circumstances, Dr. Ana Mara Rizzuto offers a new interpretation of his rejection of God. She argues that Freud`s early life and family relationships made it psychically impossible for him to believe in a provident and caring divine being.

A parent's guide to raising financially responsible children in an age of unprecedented wealth
It is natural as parents that we want to give our children the best of everything. And in an age of unprecedented wealth and easy credit, upper- and middle-income parents can indulge that urge like never before. Yet, you have become alarmed over the impact this newfound affluence may be having on your children. You fear that through your generosity you are training your children to be greedy, selfish spendthrifts. The first parenting guide to focus exclusively on this increasingly sensitive topic, Silver Spoon Kids was coauthored by a psychotherapist who counsels people with money-related emotional problems and a lawyer specializing in estate planning.
Drawing upon their experiences as members of the renowned NYU Family Wealth Institute, they tell you how to talk to kids about money, how to teach them to handle it responsibly, and how to instill in your kids a sense of giving to their communities.
Customer Reviews:
How to help your children avoid entitlement.......2007-07-21
If you teach your children how to be financially responsible between the ages of 4 and 18, you have a much higher probability of having them not back at home living with you between the ages of 22 and 35.
Required Reading For Parents.......2007-05-12
I was introduced to this book while attending a financial seminar concerning the transfer of money to children. I read the book and passed it on to my children to use as a guide in bringing up their children. Money should give children an advantage to become happy and productive citizens. The sudden acquisition of money without adequate training in the use of wealth can have disastrous results as witnessed by the numerous sad stories of lottery winners. This book gives parents a guide on how to introduce children into the acquisition and proper use of money at an early age. Following the authors' advice can help parents raise financially responsible children.
Not for anyone who still works for a living.......2005-11-16
You do not *need* to give your children an allowance to teach them how to handle money. Really. The author's position is that you simply have to--and it makes you wonder if she also thinks it is okay to experiment with drugs in order to learn how to use them the "right" way. Just as you can educate children about the dangers of drugs without giving them any, you can also educate children about how to spend money wisely. One way is to take them grocery shopping with you, for example, and let them help you with calculating the best values for the money you have.
Others have said this book is good for those with middle class incomes. I disagree. If there will be any possible future scenario where your child will have to work for a living in any capacity, they need to know that money is NOT just handed to them, and that money belongs to the person who earned it (and the spouse, in community property states), NOT the children. This means that children need to learn that some things you do without compensation as being part of the family (chores), and other things you do in exchange for money (outside jobs or special jobs around the house) or something else (bartering). In real life, money is not just handed to you, unless you're on welfare. Someone has/had to earn that money at some point in time, and just handing money to someone will never educate them as to how to actually earn it.
This book might be okay for someone looking to leave their child a huge trust fund, where he or she just lives off the interest, but not for people trying to help their children truly make their own way in life.
Read this book along with your Dr. Spock!!.......2002-05-04
I work in the field of philanthropy have hosted many workshops on issues of children and money. The four hours I spent reading this book were the most educational and fruitful four hours I have ever spent on issues of how to raise children!! Whether your family is middle class or affluent, you will benefit from this book. In my opinion, the lessons offered by the Gallos on values and raising children go far beyond issues of money. I believe it is really a guide to raising well rounded and socially responsible children. I know I will return again and again to the chapters in this book both personally and professionally. Buy this book and read it!!
Practical Read for Parents.......2002-04-16
Silver Spoon Kids offers practical, hands-on tips for parents raising kids. Financial issues can be difficult to address and this book offers guidelines to meet just those needs. One need not be an expert in the field to grasp the concepts presented - they are perfect for all to understand and utilize. This book is a great resource and will be helpful to many.

Great for elite foodies, not so much for simple cooks.......2007-06-18
I like reading this book, a lot, and developing inspiration for dishes I'd like to prepare. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, a lot of these dishes and their ingredients are readily available. However, I find that many of these recipes are just too out of reach for your standard American.
If you're someone who has visited many of these inns and restaurants and thought, "A ha! I can finally recreate recipe X!" then this is the book for you. I, however, was just looking for a cookbook that highlights our local cuisine but isn't too complicated. I got one, but not both.
A Great Northwest Cookbook.......2002-08-20
I recently got given this book, and I can see myself making most of the recipes in it as the first 3 have all been so successful. Great variety of recipes, good layout and directions, and the added bonus of a list of great Northwest Restaurant to try out when you don't fancy cooking!
Easy and Elegant!.......2000-04-15
Simple, elegant recipes that make a stunning meal. The herb baked salmon, asparagus linguine, and black mussel linguine were absolutely wonderful. Each dish had clear instructions and only required a few good ingredients.

Book Description
Thinking Outside the Block teaches art quilts the easy way-no rules, just fun. Deceptively simple transition units offer a bridge into the world of contemporary quiltmaking. So that quilters can loosen up and have fun as they learn, this book stresses spontaneity and experimentation. The six different block designs teach easy processes, such as inserting strips into blocks, constructing free-form units, cutting double, and creating checkerboards.
Customer Reviews:
Delicious!.......2006-05-02
Loved this book! Sat down & read it immediately upon receipt. Beautiful quilts. Clear instructions/drawings. Can't wait to try Sandi's techniques. Beautiful yet simple designs. If you are wanting to try your hand at more contempary quilts, you will enjoy this book. Love it!
Thinking Outside the Block: Step by Step to Dynamic Quilts.......2006-03-27
The book was in excellent condition and arrived in a timely fashion.
Motion and dynamics made easy!.......2005-09-02
I've fallen in love with scrappy quilts, strip quilts, and quilts that grow a design as you work. Pattern quilts are pretty and fine--but process quilts are so fun and surprising that I look forward to working on them. What I love about this book is that the authors show you how to easily make transition blocks with motion added to them. They work with a 7" block that becomes a 6 1/2 inch block after a strip insertion--which is wonderful--because
I can add all kinds of process blocks that are freeform to these and cut them out with a 6 1/2" square--which adds zillions of possiblities. I like the way the author treats value as important as color--but what I really love is now I can put motion into my process quilts. Most of the process blocks I have been putting together are variations of the blocks in Gwen Marston's books--but Sandi and Karen--bring in some refreshing new shapes, like the inserted strip block and irregular checkerboard block. The little block within a block is fun too. I know it's not
new--but the way it's used as a small block sprinkled through a quilt is very fresh.
I was forced to buy this book to take a course at a local quilt shop and now that I've read it--I'm glad I did. The color plates of the quilts are clear and bright and it is a joy to look at the blocks and the quilts. There are some great ideas for backgrounds
with depth and movement against applique foregrounds that really get my eye used to a dynamic quilt. So far, we have made two of the blocks in class and they were very easy and fun and allow you a lot of time to play with the color, value, and motion without worrying about the block. Also--striped fabrics are explored--and
I'm now on the lookout for striped fabrics to add to my stash. :)

Had to have it!.......2005-04-14
I have bought 15 quilt books for my wife. When I saw this one, I asked her to get it for ME. I've designed a quilt using the design overlap method in Ruth MacDowell's book "Patterns". This book gives me six new methods for creating quilt designs. These techniques are considerably more versatile than Ricky Tims' Convergence Quilts. Besides I like the quilts in the book. My wife, an experienced quilter, agrees. But, "concerning taste, there can be no dispute", so look before you buy.
a little juice for anyone looking for a re-charge!.......2005-02-19
The previous reviewer who stated that this is "one technique done over and over" clearly only looked at one PAGE of this book. There are at least SIX distinct techniques, along with multiple gallery examples for each, ideas for combining trad blocks with unique "transitions", beautiful color photos, an ending section on combining leftovers and layered throughout is a wonderful narrative of design basics and creative encouragement! Quilters who like watercolor quilts should check out the Garden Lattice technique - stunning! And the Irregular Checkerboards will appeal to Nancy Crow fans. There are art quilts, baby quilts, pictorial quilts - my personal favorite is Searching for the Light by Marilyn Felber. This book will be a boost to anyone's creatvity and imagination (providing you have some to begin with!).

Customer Reviews:
12 simple secrets review.......2007-10-01
REALLY loved this book. Sometimes as a mom you lose sight of the important things, running around with sports, trying to be "mom of the year." Really nice way of making me grounded again, without condescending tones.
Finally!.......2006-08-10
Finally, a real book for real moms offering real practical guidance for raising real children! I should know. I'm a mom of nine (yes, 9) children, aged 5 to 17. I've bought, read, skimmed, and peeked in almost every mothering/parenting book there is out there, and never found one that really offered sound direction or reassurance until now. It's put everything I've learned about being a mom (so far) into a wonderful, clear, and uplifting format (easy to pick up where you left off and read when you can catch a moment), and teaches me so much more. It should be a mandatory "manual" for all mothers!
The other thing I love about this book is that it promotes the fact that as moms we need to take care of ourselves, pursue our own interests, and not loose our identity in our families. Something I've worked hard to do myself and one of my biggest secrets for being "successful" in my calling as a mother. This book not only encourages you to eliminate the "supermom" image from your life, but tells you how to do it. Then helps you develop your own individual identity as a mother and set up your own mission statement or mothering plan from what Borba calls "A Mother's Promise," based on the true needs of our children.
There is no cookie cutter technique for parenting. Each family is unique and each child has their own individual needs, responses, attitudes, temperments, etc. This book helps you to use your mother instincts, as well as your own experiences, to create a plan that can work for your own family and each of your children as the individuals that they are.
I found this book at my church bookstore, but there is nothing necessarily religious or spiritual about it (other than respecting mothers' instincts). And yet, it doesn't offend in any way, and remarkably supports every parenting "style" from traditional to liberal, religious or cultural/ethnic based.
Dr. Michele Borba definately did a wonderful job with this book and my hat is off to her for being able to consolidate so much information she's acquired over the years from interviews, work, and research. People have been telling me for a long time that I should write a book about mothering (which I could only do about mothering my own children), but now I can and will simply recommend this incredible book.
Excellent.......2006-07-07
This book is about getting back to the basic principles of mothering. Borba uses real-life scenarios to help you understand how to employ the 12 "secrets." Also included in each and every chapter are sidebars with ideas and tips from mothers, a comprehensive list of books for more information on that topic, and a small area for you to jot down your thoughts. Borba says she wants this to be the last parenting book you read for a little while, and this is certainly the case for me. Barring any special problems you may have with your child that require further research and reading, it's a good bet you'll read 12 Simple Secrets and then take a break from other parenting books (especially the supermom, guilt-ridden books and magazines that seem to permeate the Parenting section in bookstores these days). This book is a breath of fresh air. I recommend you have a notebook handy as you read so you can jot down all the great ideas you'll get.
Brings joy, sanity, and success !.......2006-04-05
A most powerful and user friendly book that makes moms think, "Stop the motherhood frenzy and get a real life!" Understand how to connect with your children in a more simplified way that will balance your life and bring more joy, sanity, and success into both being a mom and creating a stronger family. Dr. Borba's back to basics approach, using extraordinary examples of moms whose journeys through motherhood took them to places they never knew existed within
themselves, helps mothers identify who they really are and what is truly important. A must read for those who want the recipe for being a great mother by raising happy kids!
How to be a great mom - in one book!.......2006-04-05
12 Simple Secrets Real Moms Know is the "how-to" book for any mom or mom-to-be wondering how to raise happy, caring, well-adjusted children. The best thing about it? It requires no special tools other than the ones you already possess! This book contains all the guidance and wisdom you need for great mothering skills that will ensure your kids are happy kids.

Stanley Spencer: An English Vision
ASIN: 0714828106 |
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction.......2007-08-05
I really enjoyed this book. This is a concise (about 120 pages of text) and well illustrated (about 100 images) introduction to the remarkable English painter Stanley Spencer. Robinson's text provides a useful biography of Spencer's career, a good idea of his rather unconventional ideas, and short accounts of how he fit into the artistic currents of his times. The selection of images is very good and illustrates well the range of Spencer's work and its evolution over his long and productive career.
Spencer is known best for his religious paintings, notably the powerful mural The Resurrection of the Soldiers in the Sandham Memorial Chapel. A man of deep and unconventional faith, Spencer produced a large number of canvases with religious themes, usually fusing the sacred and the quotidian. A native of the village of Cookham, where he spent much of his working life, the environs of his town were literally sacred ground to Spencer. This resulted in a very personal but surprisingly effective icongraphy.
What makes this book particularly enjoyable is the revelation of the range of Spencer's art. Spencer was also an outstanding landscape painter and a superb portraitist. This book reproduces a number of lovely landscape paintings. Some of the portraits reproduced, both drawings and paintings, are stunning.
An Introduction, by fermed.......2000-03-03
Duncan Robinson is a professor at Yale, and his book on Stanley Spencer is a fine introduction to this mad eccentric from Cookham-on-Thames. Not long ago (1998) there was an exhibit of Spencer's work that traveled the United States, and so his name in this country is not as unknown as it used to be. Whether one is familiar with his work or not, this is a well balanced and nicely printed book, with over 100 reproductions, of which at least half are in color. I keep the book handy and have given copies of it to unsuspecting friends and relatives, who then (usually) become addicts of Mr. Spencer.
For those who have never seen Spencer's work, I certainly recommend using the internet as a first step in getting a feel for what he biographical and bibliographical information (although Robinson's book is not mentioned). The main drawback about looking at pictures on the internet is that many are so small and distorted that they dishonor the works they are trying to show; still, a visual approach is more effective than trying to describe the work of this extraordinary painter verbally. The pictures in Robinson's book, in contrast, are excellent reproductions and quite adequate as a means of presenting Spencer's work. I took a copy of this book to his exhibit and was satisfied with the quality of the reproductions one of England's most important painters of the 20th century.

Book Description
Stanley Spencer is recognized as a British artist of singular vision, but he was also a prolific and highly individual writer. In moments between painting, Spencer wrote thousands of letters. He filled notebooks, diaries, and scraps of paper, recording his daily thoughts and future plans in a distinctly Spencerian manner. This book brings together for the first time an extensive selection of Spencer's key letters, notes, and theoretical writings, including important sections of Spencer's autobigraphy which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Spencer always believed that his writings were as important as his paintings, and this volume offers a unique insight into Spencer as writer, thinker, and artist.

Painter Stanley Spencer is a biographer's dream: his art is intensely personal, reflecting real people and places from his life; the controversy surrounding his private life and work guaranteed a stream of contemporary accounts about both; moreover, he was an enthusiastic chronicler of his own intentions, leaving behind vast quantities of diaries, letters, and notes. Author Kenneth Pople has utilized the wealth of information about his subject to produce Stanley Spencer: A Biography, a scrupulously researched examination of the complicated artist. Though Spencer's art had fallen out of favor in the years following his death, Stanley, the award-winning play based on his life, has renewed public interest in the man and his work, making Pople's biography timely, indeed.
Stanley Spencer is divided into 47 chapters, each one concentrating on a specific painting, through which Pople attempts to illuminate a particular period of the artist's life. He is especially strong at analyzing the work itself, but less so at breathing life into the people who surrounded Spencer: his family, wives, mistresses, and friends. Nevertheless, Kenneth Pople has brought valuable new insights to the work of Stanley Spencer, a gift for which art lovers can be grateful.

the best of Stanley spencer.......2006-11-17
I have read most of the books on Stanley Spencer. This book has the most plates and an in depth discussion of the work and life of Sir Stanley. Another book I would like is : the sketchbooks of Stanley Spencer. His drawings are not slick they are a bit crude and naive by art school standards He was a student of Tonks . Philip Evergood also studied with Tonks and his drawings are similar. They have a childlike naivete that I like.
Stanley Spencer.......2000-03-30
This is an excellent survey of the work of the English painter Stanley Spencer. It contains work from the early periods of his life that you rarely have an opportunity to see. There is a very in depth and critical veiw into the life of this great artist. The reproductions of the work are almost all in color and of high quality. This is a book that clearly shows that Spencer was that English artist who has been the inspiration of many English artist who followed him. The range of his work is truly exceptional from the religious to the nude studies and portraits of family. This is the Book that is a must to have if you are looking at figurative painting in the 20th century. It is expansive and completely beautiful.

Book Description
Covering the period from 1815 to 1860, this relatively little-known diary of a minor aristocrat is every bit as colourful, vivid and revealing of its age as Pepys’s diary is of the 17th century.
