Book Description
Praised by the Daily Oklahoman as "touching and entertaining," Rob Simbeck's biography of Cornelia Fort is wonderfully evocative and moving. Like Beryl Markham's and Amelia Earhart's, Cornelia Fort's daring life as a pilot was both inspiring and groundbreaking. Raised on her parents' Nashville estate and educated at a prestigious finishing school, Fort rejected the role expected of her in society to become a pilot. A member of the first women's flight squadron and one of the few to witness the bombing of Pearl Harbor from the air, she persevered in her courageous career, as one of the war's first female pilots, despite rampant prejudice toward women. Selling out just six weeks after its first printing, Daughter of the Air interweaves Cornelia Fort's own eloquent letters and diaries, historical documents, and the interviews of those who knew and flew with her, to create a vivid portrait of an infinitely courageous woman. It both tells Cornelia's remarkable story -- a life shaped by bravery, intelligence, and charm -- and describes the era's political and social atmosphere.

Fresh, crisp style, and a fun read.......2000-02-13
This book brings the '30s and '40s to life, as only a handful of other authors have done. And what a story! A remarkable woman, who found herself IN THE AIR at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese launched their surprise attack... as a flight instructor, with a student pilot at the controls. There is so much more to this story, though-- how a woman in the '40s became a pro in what was a "man's profession"-- aviation. For those who have studied WWII, this book fleshes out the era with a personal testimony to the courage and commitment of America's unsung heros, the WAFS. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried like a baby when I read about Cornelia's death.
She gave her life for her country.......2000-01-04
Cornelia Fort overcame all the barriers that were put in her way growing up female to be a pilot. Cornelia was flying trainers the day Pearl Harbor was attacked and was luckey to survive/ When the US government allowed women to fly Cornelia was there and gave her life for her country. The story of a short life and a woman who had the courage to live her dreams.
If only I had a tenth of Cornelia's courage............1999-12-28
I'm from Nashville and I had no idea who Cornelia Fort was. The neighborhood I grew up in is practically on the land the family estate used to sit on, yet I had never heard of her. We didn't learn about her in school. I first learned of her existence on a public radio program here in Nashville that was interviewing Rob Simbeck. I was enthralled. I had to read this book. And I was not disappointed. What a fabulous role model for young women today. She never believed that being a woman prevented her from doing anything she desired- even if this meant bucking the rules of society. I can only hope that the memory of Cornelia's life lives on and inspires generations of young women for many years to come.
I had to opportunity to meet Mr. Simbeck a few weeks ago at a book signing. In our conversation, he told me what was involved in writing this book; the research, the documentation. You can rest assured that it is as accurate a piece of history as can be painted fifty years after the death of Cornelia Fort. Her life could easily have been sensationalized. He chose to stick with the truth as he knew it.
Grander than fiction.......1999-07-30
Simbeck has gathered all the facts--people, places, events--and presented them in a masterfully told story. The life of Cornelia Fort would make excellent fiction. The author has chosen to portray her in a clear, honest way which both draws her near, and amplifies the larger-than-life experiences that were hers.
Required reading for historians, feminists and pilots. A joy for everyone.

Book Description
Touching Bottom is the true story of the Redmond family and their victory over their two most feared enemies—cancer and death. When the middle child, a thirteen-year-old son, is stricken with a spinal cord tumor, his mother fights to avoid the inevitable. Although the parents often seem trapped in a maze of hate, fear, jealousy, and pride as they journey from doctor to doctor and from hospital to hospital, remarkable individuals touch their lives to offer comfort and strengthen their faith.
Every person who has stood by helplessly while a loved one suffered and died from the ravages of cancer will identify with this family. From doctors at America’s most respected medical centers to cancer patients alone in their hospital rooms or surrounded by hospice nurses, Touching Bottom is bound to be a topic of conversation. It poses questions for both caregivers and patients, and gives new insight and hope as the dying son’s path of light revives his grieving family.

I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear,but now my eye.......2002-01-31
My title comes from the book of Job42:5 in which he describes his encounter with God. But now my eye sees You. I read this
book with much circumspection. Most recently my cousin has been
diagnosed with cancer and has gone into remission. A sister in
the church I go to lost her sister to cancer and I was able to
pass this on to her. Noone in this life makes it through without
heartache and sorrow. The hardest I've heard is to lose a child
as a parent. I can't personally say I've gone through this though
my in laws have as my wife passed away last year. For those that
have lost a spouse I would recommend the movie Shadowlands that
was done a few years back with Anthony Hopkins. It's the real
life story of the Christian author C.S.Lewis who loses his wife
to cancer. I have a tremendous amount of respect for those that
have gone through personal tragedy and as the posted review said
"have come out the other side". It's a painful and grievious process but as Barbara showed through her faith in God that He
alone can bring us through and now she's able to relate to us
this through her well written testimony. We are able to see many
insights into family dynamics and medical protocol in the hardest
battle of their lives. I believe that personal application ofthis
book would lead us to strengthening our faith and understanding
what heaven and eternal life is about to those who trust in the
living Savior and His word. Also I can see the improvement of patient-family- and doctor dialogue in the time of suffering through compassionate Biblical counseling provided through the
cooperation of the medical field and the churches. We know we
will see our loved ones in eternity for those who have believed
and that is our blessed assurance though we do need the comfort
of those trained in helping the grieving and testmonies such as
this one which can be used as a tool to help in the process.
Resource to cope with the terminal illness of a loved one.......2001-10-25
The book was very readable, I flew through the pages. The book presents a realistic picture of what living with the terminal illness of a loved one is like. There is hope then heartbreak and love and strength and courage.
The author was there and came out the other side. The book shows the reality of dealing with our bureaucratic medical system but still the humanity and decency of most of the individuals.

Every Parent Can Use This Book.......2007-01-05
The conflict-resolution techniques described in detail in this book are can be helpful to any parent. Using simple language, the author shows parents how to teach children how to think for themselves. This means that children even as young as two or three can learn to think their way through difficult or troubling situations and find solutions to problems on their own. The concepts and the techniques will be valuable to very young children as they learn to move through society, but will also benefit older children in their daily lives, not just at home. These are proven techniques that really work, techniques that are being taught through special programs in many schools across the country. Simple language, simple concepts that anyone can use. I consider these techniques invaluable in helping children learn to really think their way through problems. The method works.
Practical.......2005-01-20
My graduate degree is in gifted education, and my son will be 2 in a few months. I bought this book to prepare for and head off toddler conflicts. While there are plenty of examples to illustrate the steps, and the steps are presented in logical, simple sequences, the text lacks the personality and humor that would make it enjoyable to read. My son is still a bit too young for this, but my experience in the classroom suggests these strategies would be helpful with all kinds of personalities. Still, I wish the writing were more engaging.
The best book I've read teaching parenting skills.......2001-10-04
I echo what's been written about this book. I kept checking it out of the library over and over until I finally decided just to buy it. My 3 year old has been figuring out a DIFFERENT way to solve problems since we started ICPSing. Beginning with word concepts that can be started at a very early age (same/different, is/is not, good idea/not a good idea) then moving into more complex problem solving is a great approach. This book gives parents, or anyone working with children solid approaches on how to teach problem solving. I highly recommend this book.
Required reading for parents.......2000-10-26
This book and its successor, Raising a Thinking Preteen, are going to be required reading for prospective parents when I am king of the world. There are so many cliche phrases that we learn from our parents, TV, etc. that are very destructive, and certainly not constructive, and this book teaches parents how to talk to their children to foster many positive traits, including the "hungry mind" attitude.
Love this book! Fewer tantrums, better social interaction!.......2000-09-19
My six year old son loves to play the ICPS games and has shown a marked improvement in conflict resoution with peers. He now knows the meaning of the word "frustrated" and how to avoid frustration (and how to avoid temper tantrums) by thinking of and evaluating his own alternatives in many cases. Instead of yelling or pushing to get his way, he offers to trade or works out a deal for sharing. It is a pleasure to watch his self-confidence grow and his self-esteem rise. As he grows older, he will be able to think for himself and avoid being controlled by others or becoming controlling himself. This book has been helpful for the whole family. This Mom now has some training in how to model good problem solving skills for the rest of the family, as well. Communication skills in our home have improved greatly at all levels due to Shure's book. It is one of the best parenting/communication books that I have ever read.
Book Description
Sweet Hands Island Cooking from Trinidad & Tobago
Callalloo and Buss Up Shut, Mother-in-Law And Kuchela, Chip Chip and Doubles. The verbiage of Trinidad's cuisine is both lyrical and mysterious. The variety of foods from this Caribbean nation and their fanciful names tell the story of a rich and eclectic cultural hertiage. A British colony from 1779 until 1962, during those years Trinidad & Tobago's population grew to include East Indian and Chinese indentured servants who worked in the sugar plantations alongside former African slaves. Trinidadian food is marked by the blending of these cultures. As such, curry, Indian breads, callaloo (a soup of West African origin), and fried rice are all among the national dishes. SWEET HANDS: ISLAND COOKING FROM TRINIDAD & TOBAGO includes these dishes, as well as many others, including Shrimp Creole, Beef Stew with Dumplings, and Ginger Beer. Also included are fascinating histories and anecdotes on such topics as Trinidadian rum, Buccaneer Cooking, and Black Cake. Beautiful photographs! by Jean-Paul Vellotti bring this beautiful island nation and its unique cuisine to life.

Sweet Hands: Island Cooking From Trinidad And Tobago.......2007-07-17
Sweet Hands: Island Cooking from Trinidad and Tobago includes a variety of traditional island dishes including both sweet and hot main meal meals using beef, chicken, pork, goat, and lots of fish. There are also a lot of spicy vegetable main meals and side dishes and some really nice desserts, many making use of the sweet taste of coconut.
The recipes in this book are simply delicious, extremely filling, and will be enjoyed by even the most finicky audience. The food is often quite colourful and beautiful looking, even when I cooked it, which strangely seems to add more enjoyment and taste to the meal. One should note, however, that many of the recipes in this book are so tasty because it takes a good deal of time to prepare these dishes. Some of the meat marinades need to be prepared two days in advance and many of the dishes include dry chickpeas and split peas that have to be soaked overnight and then cooked before the recipe can be prepared.
Sweet hands: reading through the recipes........2007-07-17
I live in Norway. Reading this was like seeing/tasting the food of my childhood. Brought back fond memories of schooldays and buying DOUBLES from the best street vendor near San Juan Market. Instant recognition that the recipes were following through on the traditional culinary treats in T & T. Plan to start cooking during my Summer hols. Sweet Trini food!
This really takes me back.......2007-03-09
I can see where the author is coming from in her love of Trini food. My mom is from Trinidad and only my grandma would make the traditional dishes for us, but I've always loved them since I was a child. My grandma never used recipes, she just knew what was in the dishes but never exactly how much and she never measured anything so I wasn't able to learn how to cook traditionally from her. The recipes in this book are great and easy to follow. It also reminded me that sometimes you just need to make do with what you have (try the doubles recipe with a can of diced potatoes instead of chickpeas and serve over rice). I still struggle a bit with the roti, but I've never made bread before. A rolling pin has helped a lot. This book covers all different aspects of cooking, from blending your own spices, to making full dishes, soups, and desserts. Truly a great value!
You'll be Cooking Up Mouthwatering Trini Dishes in No Time.......2007-02-17
I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.
SWEET HANDS is one of those books I had to keep, not only because I've spent so much time in Trinidad (and a little in Tobago), but because of all the cookbooks I've seen there, I believe this one is the best. Even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet cook, I never really mastered the art of doubles, and I'd seen them made hundred of times, until I used the recipe on page 190 in this book. I think maybe it's the kuchela. I just never could seem to get the flavor I was after with the kind I bought at the High Lo Supermarket, but then a friend of a friend named Nazir had his wife make me up some and WOW do my doubles taste extra special now. Still, if you can't get Nazir's wife's kuchila you can probably find something that will do in a local West India Market. Basically, kuchela is made of mangoes and peppers, so you maybe could even try something else. Anyway, I'm digressing. This is a great cookbook, one which should belong to anybody who wants to call herself a Caribbean chef.
Review submitted by Captain Katie Osborne
Best book on Trinidadian cooking.......2006-12-31
Growing up in trinidad and tobago is a unique experience and the foods there are definitely #1 compared to a lot of other islands. When I first moved to the USA, I was not all that concerned with trying to find the foods since there was a place for roti near our house, and you can find most of those ingredients in Miami. It was not until after college when i moved to the Northwest States that I felt "homesick" for dahlpuri and callaloo and other such things. I have purchased and tested several books that are a generalized Caribbean cookbook, as well as hunted down the Naparima Girls Guide to Cooking. It was not until I found Sweet Hands and read through it that I found what I needed.
The pictures of Trinidad and the stories bring that element of history and home and passion to the recipes. And I LOVE that she offers substitutions for some of the ingredients. I made a callaloo stew with swiss chard and spinach as suggested, and while the taste was slightly less sweet, it carried such a good flavour that I felt I was home again. Those other cookbooks maybe going to the second hand store.

Book Description
This highly innovative volume on the treatment of couples in therapy presents a clear and exciting conceptual framework for understanding the evolution of the couple's relationship as a dynamic unit.
At its most intense, the notion of "romantic love" evokes feelings and associations so profound that they transcend time, culture, and even rational thought. Under the pressure of a long-term, intimate relationship, however, the "mythical mate" who was once the source of romantic love often becomes one's worst enemy. How does this metamorphosis affect therapeutic techniques created to help couples evolve through this critical point?
Using as their springboard the model of infant development developed by pioneering researcher Margaret Mahler, the authors find striking parallels between these stages and the powerful biological, psychological factors that shape the dynamics between two interacting adults. Rich and numerous case examples vividly illustrate the clinical techniques created by the authors to work in synchrony with their developmental model. These techniques enable the therapist to help problem-ridden couples understand the stages they are currently experiencing in their relationship.
In Quest of the Mythical Mate presents a valuable and fertile developmental model for diagnosing and treating couples that is flexible enough to incorporate a wide variety of intervention strategies, yet purposeful enough to give a clear sense of direction to couples in distress. As such, this volume provides a powerful therapeutic approach for all professionals who treat couples.

This book provides a decent framework to approach the subject of couple's therapy. However, I find that Imago therapy is definitely a superior choice. Check out Imago before you buy this book.

This book provides an excellent developmental framework for assessing the condition of a relationship. Treatment is then tailored to the needs of the individuals and the needs of the relationship. This book is a must for anyone providing marital counseling.

Book Description
The dramatic unfolding of how, against seemingly hopeless odds at the end of World War II, the most important international organization in the world, the United Nations, came to be.
In Act of Creation, Steven Schlesinger tells a pivotal and little-known story of how Secretary of State Edward Stettinius and the new American President, Harry Truman, picked up the pieces of the shattered campaign initiated by Franklin Roosevelt to create a "United Nations." Using secret agents, financial resources, and their unrivaled position of power, they overcame the intrigues of Stalin, the reservations of wartime allies like Winston Churchill, the discontent of smaller states, and a skeptical press corps to found the United Nations. The author reveals how the UN nearly collapsed several times during the conference over questions of which states should have power, who should be admitted, and how authority should be divided among its branches. By shedding new light on leading participants like John Foster Dulles, John F. Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson, Nelson Rockefeller, and E. B White, Act of Creation provides a fascinating tale of twentieth-century history not to be missed.
Customer Reviews:
The Birth of the United Nations.......2007-06-25
This book takes the reader through the San Francisco conference that established the United Nations (UN) and shows how the organization came into being. This is not meant to serve as a history of the UN and it does not take a position on whether it is good or bad. It merely discusses the differences that the nations had in the big power arena and focuses on a couple of the bigger disputes. The decision to add Belarus and Ukraine to the delegation but not Poland is explored as well as what to do with Argentina. The Truman administration inherited a tough war and an even tougher peace. The United Nations framework was built on the Yalta agreements which Truman was not even at. Sttennius and his state department team would be the real victors with the establishment of the UN despite Truman's desire to install a new secretary of state. The book has several areas where the language is unclear and it is hard to follow the authors point but largely it is well done and good analysis. The author knows his subject well and it is an excellent look at how diplomatic history should be done. If you really want to learn about how the UN was started this is the book to use.
would you like to go to the back satge of the UN creation?.......2004-09-13
If your answer to the title of this review is YES, so you should buy this book. I just got it a few days ago and i can't stop reading it. It's amaizing how the author tells all the story behind the creation of the UN. Specially all the effort of FDR to gather some of the most powerful nations in wartime. If you belive in the values of the united nations, so you would like to know who its fathers are.
Good summary.......2004-06-08
Schlesinger gives us a good overview of the impetus for and process of creating the UN. There are some interesting, provocative events told in this story, but I finished the book thinking the story could (should) have been more interesting. That said, it was a decent, consistent read--a good case study in "getting to 'yes'".
Praise for a corrupt and greedy world-conqueror.......2004-05-03
What is missing from American readers is an ability to read between the lines, and a state of denial of where this world is heading. Why do Democrats try to portray the need for the UN? They condition us to think the sky will fall without their "international" support. Did you know that America abandoned China, refusing even to sell them weapons, all the while, they were being taken over by the communists who control china today, and were members of the U.N. while the nationalists China were removed from membership. I think the best thing this country could do is leave the U.N.
Read the book "The Insiders: Architects of the New World Order" for a real education. Or "None Dare Call it Conspiracy."
if can't find here, try ebay.
A Great Book!.......2004-04-07
I enjoyed this book immensely! It kept my interest from the time you learn of Roosevelt's death to Truman's speech at the inauguration of the United Nations. You learn about some of Roosevelt's thoughts on the need for the UN. Most importantly you learn about the true architects of the UN charter. You learn of the people involved and the opposing viewpoints that shaped the language of the charter. It is not a stuffy book nor a read with big words. It is a down to earth, straight forward review of the UN's beginning. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in world politics.
