Book Description
Taylor Peirce was 40 years old when he left his wife and family to enlist in the 22nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He served for three long years and saw action in both theaters of the Civil War-ranging thousands of miles from the siege of Vicksburg through engagements in Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, both Carolinas, and the Shenandoah Valley. During that time he saw his wife only twice on furlough, but still stayed in close contact with her through their intimate and dedicated exchange of letters.
Both ardent Unionists who hated slavery and revered Lincoln, the Peirces wrote nearly every week over their long separation-letters that reveal a deep and abiding love for each other, as well as their strong-willed allegiance to the Union cause. Taylor's letters tell of battles and camp life, drilling and training, brave and cowardly commanders, troop morale, raucous amusements like music and gambling, delinquent paymasters, and his own moral code and motivation for fighting. They include graphic descriptions of the battles around Vicksburg, including vivid details about burning plantation houses, digging canals and trenches, and enduring constant rifle and artillery fire.
Catharine, for her part, reported on family and relatives, the demands of being a single mother with three young children, business affairs, household concerns, weather and crops, events in Des Moines, and national politics, filling gaps in our knowledge of Northern life during the war. Most of all, her letters convey her frustration and aching loneliness in Taylor's absence, as well as her fears for his life, even as other women were becoming widowed by the war.
The letters paint an engrossing portrait of a soldier and husband who was trying to do his patriotic and familial duty, and of a wife trying to cope with loneliness and responsibility while longing for her husband's safe return. Beautifully edited and annotated by prize-winning Civil War historian Richard Kiper, they bring to life a nation under siege and provide a rare look at the war's impact on both the common soldier and his family.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

Truly Remarkable!.......2000-07-13
Dr. Ben Gallagher's account of WWI is one of the most compelling books I have ever had the pleasure to read. Between his medical background, self-reflection and observation this is perhaps one of the most complete views of war and humanity ever committed to paper.
Inbetween his own story, Dr. Gallagher also relates the stories of the people around him, including one of the most remarkable escapes from a POW Camp I have ever heard. He also includes the stories of his patients whose courage is both humbling and inspirational.
I am grateful that this account was published and I am only too sorry that more readers have not found this hidden treasure. Don't miss out. This is one of the best personal accounts you will ever find!
A treasured addition to any library........1998-12-01
Gallagher's memoir is a combination of clinical observation and vivid prose which provides one with a unique view into the March 1918 Offensive which should become a classic of that nearly forgotten generation. His detail and imagery are phoenominal. Factual in the extreme, his reference to the obscure 12th. U.S. Engineers of Missouri railroad men only serves to enhance the credibility of his experience. I have not, yet, seen a medical memoir of any war to compare. We are fortunate that this account has been published rather than lost in the archives of some facility.
absolutely fantastic.......1998-11-19
dr gallagher's second book reflects a remarkable talent as a story-teller. In Cellars, he makes the reader feel like a member of the family as he relates the tale of his grandfather's experiences in World War I. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to his next story.
Worthwhile memoir........1998-09-21
Gallagher was a freshly minted physician when he volunteered for the British Army ahead of the American mobilization for World War One. Fortunately for us his narrative skills matched his surgical abilities.
He was attached to the Gloucesters in the Somme sector, and, despite his misgivings, quickly became an effective battle surgeon. His remarkable adventures, his relations with the English (for whom he had no great love), and, especially, his descriptions of Great War surgical practices make for fascinating reading.
The experienced military history reader may notice a few historical inaccuracies, (the U.S. 11th Engineers were not from the Missouri National Guard; Gallagher's decoration was the Military Cross, not the Military Medal, a different award), but these don't detract seriously from the immediacy and impact of one of the best memoirs by an American serving with the British Army.

Nothing New.......2007-02-08
I was excited to read this book and learn some new tips for staying organized and managing my time with 2 kids under age 2, but this book was not the answer for me. I had seen 95% of the tips before, either in magazines or on organization shows, and I found many of the tips to be outdated (catalog shopping, dropping off film at the drugstore). This book felt like it was written a decade or so ago, then was revised to add some websites.
The author lives in an older house and has school-age children, and at times she seems to be writing only to the audience who has the same circumstances. Some of the tips (such as hanging a rope from your child's ceiling for storage) are dangerous, and others (building walls and knocking out niches) would require a hefty budget and/or great carpentry skills.
Finally, although it doesn't take an organization professional to write about organization, an amateur should NOT be giving financial advice. The author is obviously not a certified financial planner, yet makes suggestions on how the reader can get out of debt (cutting up credit cards, using an envelope system) and plan budgets. Please, if you are looking to tune your finances, consult a professional or at least read a book authored by an expert!
Overall, I was disappointed with the content and was looking for more specific strategies geared towards a "parent".
A MUST HAVE FOR BUSY FAMILIES!.......2006-05-07
As a busy mother of 8 children under the ages of 12--I'm always looking for new ideas to help keep us all on track. I definitely picked up some great "new" ideas from this book to add to my on-going collection of ways to be more organized and in control. She makes the read fun and quick! Very easy to follow when you are looking for specific topics. A great reference to come back to over and over again. As a writer myself, I appreciated her sense of humor and style!!
It helped me!.......2005-07-02
As a lifelong packrat and very unorganized person, this book is the first book that has ever actually motivated me to really become organized and I've actually read it all the way through and followed it's tips. A great thing about this book is that you don't have to read all the way through. Pick a chapter and dive right in AND it gives you great solutions/options for quick fixes or major rehauls.
I'm newly married and only have one small baby, but I'm hoping that as a SAHM, this will get my butt in gear and keep it there for years to come.
SOLD on this book,
Nicki

Basic at best .......2004-08-27
I was rather disappointed in this book. The tips are mostly quite basic (although a handy reference if you don't have a similar book) - store things where you use them, make the kids help clean up. I didn't feel that it lived up to its title of 'the organized *parent*' but was more of a general organizing book.
A parenting bible........2002-10-22
I should have read this book sooner!!!! From A to Z this book will help you budget your time better and be more efficient. Thus giving you more time for your family and yourself. The suggestions and tips are very helpful.
A great reference book to keep on the shelf to pick up again and again.
Book Description
Since 1979, Los Barrios restaurant in San Antonio, Texas—the heart of Tex-Mex cuisine—has been serving up casero, or home-style, cooking that has charmed food critics and earned an impressive following. Founded with a small investment and a lot of spirit, Los Barrios built its reputation on the authenticity of its cuisine. The Los Barrios Family Cookbook offers these reputation-making recipes—from simple but impressive traditional Mex-ican dishes, many of which have been handed down and perfected through the generations, to modern Tex-Mex favorites—to fans of Southwest cuisine across the country.
Included are recipes for Mexican essentials: Homemade Flour Tortillas, Tamales, and Pico de Gallo; Barrios family specialties, such as Mama Viola’s Chicken Rice Soup and Acapulco-Style Ceviche; and the classics—Chiles Rellenos, Chalu-pas, and Enchiladas Verdes. All the recipes contain easy-to-find ingredients, and special cooking tips will help you prepare dishes at home that will be as delicious as those served in the restaurant. The Los Barrios Family Cookbook is a comprehensive and indispensable resource for food that explodes with flavor. ¡Buen provecho!

Los Barrios Family Cookbook.......2007-04-06
I like this cookbook very much. I look forward to use it in the future.
Yum Yum Give Me Some & Make it Tasty Healthy.......2007-04-04
I love this restuarant and it's always packed Monday thru Friday, I was living in Alexandria Virginia when the book came out being a San Antonian I had to get it little did I know it would change the traditional family way of making Texican (Texas Style Mexican Food). I now and will always cherish this book substitutes cabbage for tradition lettuce that is a very healthy twist and thats just one of many examples of the healthy twists in this book. If you are a vegan this book could really help you put some pazzaz in your food with some simple substitutions. One of my favorite dishes in the restuarant is Green Enchiladas made with tomatillos and that great recipe is in here just wish my cooking skills were up to the task. I would definetly give this as a gift. San Antonio is not all about the RiverWalk take some time out of the downtown area when visiting and do what the natives do eat at Los Barrios.
Excellent if its what you're looking for..........2006-07-03
I was looking for a cookbook that dealt in the basics (I had never prepared a poblano pepper for roasting before), but that also had some interesting dishes. I have never been to the restaurant so I didn't have anything to compare my results to ( not that I should anyway) and I wanted something that had a good feel to it.
Overall, I am impressed with the book for someone like myself, new to cooking actual meals, and have already created homemade corn tortillas, pico de gallo, eggs mexicana and the chicken breasts in creamy poblano sauce. My family seems pleased with the results (my tortillas were a bit thick), and I'm going to continue to use the book until I outgrow it (it may be a while).
If you are a more experienced cook, especially in Mexican or Tex-Mex dishes, then this may be a little simple for you, but if you are fairly new to the cuisine then please consider it.
Have you made nachos as a family meal but not your own pico de gallo? Then this is your book.
A Waste of Money.......2006-03-23
Robb Walsh's book is so much better! This does just seem to have been an attempt to capitalize on this family's moment in the limellight. Very dissapointing, unfortunately.
Some background info helps..........2006-01-19
There's a reason why this is a Tex-mex cookbook from San Antonio, and not "authentic mexican cuisine" from Guadalajara. Tex-mex combines some of the great meals you can get south of the border with American ingredients (such as American & velveeta). Let's face it, these products melt better. So I'd stay away from this cookbook if you're looking for Mexican food instead of Tex-mex.
Also, one should keep in mind that it's not the authors back in the kitchen, and that the food has to be prepared back there to feed the hundreds of people that go through the restaurants everyday. So this will be a factor when you go to fix this in your kitchen. If you want food from Los Barrios, I'd say to go to one of the restaurants. But if you want help creating your own, the cookbook is a great place to start!
Oh, and if you like the Chimichurri, ask anyone at either of the restaurants and they'll tell you it's a secret family recipe. (But if you really want a recipe for Chimichurri, search online. That's how my aunt got her recipe.)
Book Description
From salsa to sangria, fajitas to flan, and margaritas to mole, you'll find all the secrets of San Antonio's unique Tex-Mex cuisine in The San Antonio TEX-MEX Cookbook. This is the authentic collection of Tex-Mex recipes you will want to create the wonderful Tex-Mex cuisine that is unique to San Antonio. Accept no substitutes!
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointed.......2006-12-27
I have to admit with the high reviews I was expecting a really great cookbook. I was disappointed. Some of the recipes were extremely basic and many relied on convenience and processed foods. I prefer other Tex-Mex cookbooks, such as The Tex-Mex Cookbook: A History in Recipes and Photos by Robb Walsh.
The person who rated this with one star is a complete and total idiot, at BEST.......2006-05-15
I ordered this, because I love this type of food, and because I want to in some small way make up for the total moron who rated it with one star. She said because she does not know what the food is supposed to look like, and there are no pictures of the food in it. What planet is she from?
Hey, there are thousands of cookbooks out there with no color glossy pro photos of the food you idiot. Like most of the Junior League ones, and the entire 'Best of the Best' series, just as a tip of the iceburg. And I don't mean iceburg lettuce. I recently inquired about the cost of printing up a couple of hundred recipes with COLOR PICTURES, and it was on the order of $18. a BOOK. Now, if you only want cookbooks that are done from big name chefs, with big bucks behind their publishing, just stumble your way into your local bookstore and buy them.
But some of the very BEST cookbooks, with the most authentic recipes do not have photos. A lot are self-published. Now if the average person does the self-publishing route, and spends $18 to please some idiot, then tries to make a PROFIT on it- heaven help us what it would cost. Then the whiner would say it had a tacky binding. Or something.
How about this? Why don't you COOK some of the recipes and see how they TASTE? Then judge it. Did you knock your grandmother's recipe box because there were no glossy photos? Did she even bother to write any of her recipes DOWN? I say efforts like this author has made are well worth it and helps ALL OF US. And I thank her very much for the effort that it takes. Anyway, I now can safely say, having it in hand, it IS worth more than 5 stars.
I know, I should not be so mad about someone zipping in and totally trying to wreck a person's life and livelyhood. But it pisses me off big time having been the victim of it a few too many times myself.
It could have been better.......2002-11-17
It could have been better.
A Big Hit.......2000-09-24
This book provided me with new ideas on how to spice up my old and bland receipes. I am truly enjoying the excitment this is putting into my cooking. Elizabeth has captured the flavor of Mexico with a Texas / US flair. A great addition to any bodies cooking.
Delicious, subtle to spicy and not for calorie counters.......2000-09-21
I was in San Antonio for the first time recently, and discovered this thing called Tex-Mex cuisine. Why I didn't get the book when I was there, I don't know, but I couldn't stop thinking about all the great dishes I had when I was there. I have tried several recipes from this book and they are wonderful...the fideo pasta dish, avocado soup, cucumber salad and mango salad. The dishes accomodate light to hearty appetites, and the quantities make it easy to plan for entertaining guests. If you want a break from the usual, pick this one up.

Excellent resource for keeping your cat(s) healthy and happy........2005-11-26
Written by a veterinarian, this book provides detailed health advice as well as first-aid information for the wide variety of trouble your cat can get into. Some health emergencies simply cannot wait for treatment until one packs Fluffy in the car and drives to the Vet. This book provides valuable information to help you keep your cat alive en route to your Vet or animal hospital. From basic cuts and scrapes to being struck by lightning or bitten by a snake, a new cat owner might be surprised just how much trouble a curious cat can find. This book helped us better prepare change-averse cats for moves and realize the severe risk of heat-stroke posed after losing our air-conditioning due to a hurricane. The Cat Repair Book is not filled with cute cat pictures and feline pop-psychology, it is by and large a whiskers-to-tail primer on your cat's anatomy and health concerns written in plain English. A new parent today would (it is hoped) not fail to learn CPR; if your cat is a valued member of your family this is a worthy resource to keep at hand.

Customer Reviews:
A Beloved Classic and It Still Works.......2007-09-28
I bought this book 5 years ago, and I still use it. This book, and all of Becky's sketch books, give you ideas for pages not reliant upon products, designs, or themes. I simply look for a page layout based on how many photos I have and their orientation. Turn the book 90 degrees and you have more options. Turn it upside down for even more options. Have an empty space to fill with an accent? Check out that section. Wondering how to emphasize your focal point photo? Look at frames.
The best thing about this book is that the sketches do not rely upon the more modern trend of oddly sized photos. All the photos in this book are 4 x 6 or thereabouts. No PhotoShop skills or computer equipment is necessary!
Absolutely worth every penny.
Excellent Resource for a new-intermediate scrapper!.......2007-09-20
Becky Higgins is a wealth of ideas for scrappers, and this book is just the thing I need when I'm trying to put together a layout. In the world of scrapbooking, trends come and go, but because these ideas are based onkey graphic design concepts (and all of Becky's stuff is like this)they can easily transfer over to new styles and techniques. If you are an experienced scrapper, then you've probably seen a lot of this stuff before and would benefit from getting her newest book, "Best of Becky Higgins Sketches." But I consider this book indispensable!
GREAT SCRAPBOOKERS HELPER.......2007-05-18
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR WHEN YOU HAVE A CREATIVE BLOCK -- LOTS OF IDEAS AND YOU CAN EASILY ADAPT THEM TO FIT YOUR STYLE! TONS AND TONS OF GREAT STUFF
My Creative Companion.......2007-05-12
Great Book, I love it. Good source of information and ideas. I would recommend it to anyone. I plan to get her other books also. Thanks Becky Higgins.
Great Generic Ideas With No Photos to Distract.......2007-01-31
My favorite part about this book is that it isn't just a bunch of pages other people have created that you then get caught up in the photos and stories, forgetting why you originally went looking. For years, I'd gotten the scrap magazines, which, while beautiful and ususally inspiring, did not always help me. I usually thought I had to find a book with exactly the theme I was working on. The good news is that you don't, and this book has mock-ups of layouts, borders, etc. that are easily adaptable to any book you're working on. I think the only downside might be that there are so many new techniques that have come out in the five years since it was published, that it may not cover as much as some might like. Having said that, I'm willing to bet the #2 that just came out will pick those up perfectly! From my perspective, buying either book (or even both!) would be a good investment for anyone who's found themselves stuck creatively!

"Easy-Care Perennial Gardens" -- a Good First Book.......2003-02-24
This book gives fledgling gardeners an overview of practical perennial gardening techniques. I especially liked the section about developing garden plans because it simplified what always appeared to me to be a complex process. The book could use more information about soil preparation, such as double digging, and effective plant combinations. Overall, though, "Easy-Care Perennial Gardens" provides readers with an easy-to-read primer that whets the appitite for more books on the subject.
Could be "Perennials for Dummies" but it's better.......2000-04-04
The design of gardens feature is especially helpful. Perennials can be so overwhelming- to get them right. This takes the stress out of that. Plus great info on troubles and how to treat them.

GREAT.......2007-01-11
This is one of the many Tool Chest books we have used for a kid's Bible Study. We have been amazed at the impact it has had on our kids. In fact, a 3 year old in our group remembered what the prior study was about. We were shocked because it was 5 weeks since we had that study. It has been so valueable for our family.

Customer Reviews:
Very good biography BUT.......2004-08-27
This is a very well-written and researched biography and is very good reading, BUT that being said, I would have liked to know more about Ena's relationships with her mother, brothers and a bit more about her relationship with her husband's family. The author doesn't bring forth any evidence regarding Ena's feelings about being a carrier of hemophilia, like Robert Massie did for Alexandra in "Nicholas and Alexandra". How did Ena cope with two hemophiliac sons, and why did she treat her second son, Jaime, so coldly? What were her relationships with her daughters? Was she afraid they would carry the gene, too? How did Ena feel when her brother Maurice was killed in WWI, just two days after she gave birth to her last child? These are the things I really would have liked to find out. But these revealations are not in this biography. However, that being said, it's upfront about King Alfonso and his problems, and the problems of their marriage. Recommended.
