Book Description
This is the definitive biography of Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, one of the major commanders of the Second World War. The Sunday Telegraph described it as "compellingly readable". As supreme commander of the Kreigsmarine, Doenitz was responsible for the staggering death toll among the U-boat crews he sent out to fight the battle of the Atlantic, a bitter contest that constantly threatened to cut Allies' vital supply lifeline. But this is more than a study of war at sea: it is an unflinching portrait of a dedicated officer who was corrupted by his inner need for a cause and a leader to serve. Doenitz of course discovered both in Adolf Hitler, who found in the admiral his most loyal supporter and confidant and duly appointed him his successor, the last fuhrer of the third Reich - which he indeed became for a few short days in 1945.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing, pedantic and dull, a book that reveals more about the author than the subject........2006-08-09
Do not read this book if you have any interest in German naval strategy or tactics during World War II, nor indeed if you have any interest in an objective appraisal of the life and work of Karl Donitz as a man. This book is undoubtedly well researched, with the co-operation of some people close to Donitz, including his family, but that research is utterly wasted by the author's own cultural prejudices.
There are precious few times when objectivity is allowed a rear its head by the author. These are to be found in the acknowledgements where the author states that he knows that this book will hurt member's of Donitz's family who helped him; in the introduction where the author acknowledges the difficulties that the cultural divide has caused him and in the postscript where the author truthfully reports that other reviews found he displayed "distaste" for Donitz, even "torturing" the evidence against him.... a total want of charity."
The few good words that are said about Donitz almost all come from other Naval personalities, especially his superiors during his rise up the ranks and his contemporaries in the Allied navies. The author even acknowledges that the official histories of the Allied navies are generous towards Donitz, but that does not alter his perspective.
Throughout the book, the author refers to the German struggle against `England' in both World Wars rather than against the British Empire or even Britain. That is central to the author's flaws. The American and Canadian navies are barely mentioned in the book, unless there is an opportunity for criticising them as well! The Empire navies don't seem to exist. Every alleged or real atrocity by U-boats crews is rehearsed with scarcely an acknowledgement that atrocities were also carried out by Allied navies. That the German's may sometimes have been reacting to British or Allied acts, is never conceded.
There is a complete absence of analysis of the actual battles in the Atlantic. These are mentioned at the most superficial, strategic level. Even this level of analysis is corrupted. Unlike Winston Churchill, the author does not allow for a second, that had Donitz managed to have greater influence on German military and naval strategy at the start of the war, then Germany might have won the Battle of the Atlantic.
There is barely a paragraph that isn't laced with a very amateur psychologist's attempt to interpret Donitz's actions, usually as pejoratively as possible, regardless of lack of evidence. For example `photographs of him from the period convey an impression of a man peering out suspiciously from inside his skull as if haunted by the past and wondering whether it was going to blow up beneath him' The author strongly believes Donitz should have received the death penalty at Nuremburg. Many readers will find that this book may be more deserving of the death penalty.
Excellent biography of Donitz.......2002-10-07
Karl Donitz began his career as a Naval officer at about the age of twenty, being commissioned just prior to the outbreak of World War I, where he quickly earned an Iron Cross Second Class and his own command. He finished the war a British POW. Unlike other senior Nazis (Goring for example) Donitz never played socialite; he was a naval officer at heart and in deed from the age of twenty until the last days of World War II when he was appointed by Hitler just prior to his suicide to take his position as Chancellor of the Third Reich. He is best known as the commander of the German U-Boat forces during the entirety of the war and later (beginning in January, 1943) as Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy.
Padfield's biography is excellently researched. It is a detailed portrayal of Donitz as both man and officer and also presents a throrough review of naval (especially U-boat) strategy during the second world war. What's more, Padfield illustrates a strong link between the personal Donitz and the often fatal strategic decisions he made. There is evidence of Donitz's complicity in Nazi war crimes not seen in many other sources describing him.
Read this book if you are interested in the facts behind one of the deadliest aspects of the war in Europe (30000 of 40000 U-boat officers and men lost their lives) or if you'd like to know more about a key figure in the Third Reich not often remembered alongside more prominent names like Goebbels or Himmler. If you are hoping for a book that portrays Donitz as he was seen during his life, an officer who did his military duty and kept his hands clean of the atrocities of the Nazis, try another. Padfield is very harsh in his judgement of Donitz. If you dislike lots of statistics and are looking for nothing more than biographical data, I would try Donitz's memoirs.
In all, it is a vivid portrayal of Karl Donitz and a good read for Naval Enthusiasts.

The Voice Dialogue Facilitator's Handbook, Part I: A Step By Step Guide To Working With The Aware Ego
ASIN: 0062507575 |
Book Description
Hal and Sidra Stone are the creators of "Voice Dialogue" process, a therapy that transforms the inner critic from crippling adversary to productive ally.
The inner critic. It whispers, whines, and needles us into place. It checks our thoughts, controls our behavior, and inhibits action. It thinks it is protecting us from being disliked, hurt, or abandoned. Instead, the critical inner voice causes shame, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and low-self-esteem. It acts as a powerful saboteur of our intimate relationships and is a major contributor to drug and alcohol abuse.
Through examples and exercises, the Stones show us how to recognize the critic, how to avoid or minimize "critic attacks," and, most important, how the inner critic can become asn intelligent, perceptive, and supportive partner in life.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2006-06-27
Hal and Sidra Stone are pioneers in this field of inner voice dialogue. Think evolution from Freud's id, ego, super ego...through Transactional Analysis (Parent, Child, Adult) through Bradshaw's Inner child work...to inner voice dialogue. They have video's books and workshops and have trained numerous professionals in this technique. The result is a genuinely effective technique that gives us a viable framework to understand why we often have opposing thoughts and feelings and the tools to move us in a direction of acting from a more "adult" place. My partner and I used these techniques from their book "Embracing Ourselves" to great effect in the mid 90's as she worked through abuse survivor issues. Not only did it provide a method of healing for her, I was able to use it effectively in my own journey and it was an exceptional tool for us as a couple.
Now we are using and recommending this book (Inner Critic) to friends as we see in ourselves and in others, the overriding power the inner critic has on our lives. The book explains where the critic and other sub-personalities come from, the concept of disowned selves and how instead of trying to "choke" our critic into silence, we can actually take a more lasting approach to understanding it and the related subpersonalities, hold the primary subs and the disowned selves together and work toward balance and the achievement of a strong aware ego. Don't be scared off by the lingo here, it is very understandable and usable information.
Freud grows branches.......2005-10-17
This book, in very easy lay language, describes what would happen if Freud grew branches. Instead of one superego there are many; instead of one id, there are many; only the ego remains in glorious isolation managing the whole crowd of inner beings. Don't get too confused trying to figure out which inner being is talking to you, just get steady with your "Aware Ego" and go forward. The book's spiritual base and presumed readership is New Age, so if you're not from that place, it can be very entertaining to listen to the authors chide various New Age failings.
Good Book!.......2004-03-16
This is a good book loaded with many great ideas on how to overcome your inner critic. Read it and apply it today!
Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works
PS here is a great story that is in the begining of this book:
What Is Your Inner Critic and Where Did It Come From?
On the journey of self-discovery, let us stop looking for what is wrong with us. Let us discover, instead, who we are and how we work! Let us put our judgment aside as we explore the amazing system Of selves within us and learn to live with ever-increasing honesty, choice, and freedom.
There was once a dreadfully wicked hobgoblin. One day he had a simply marvelous idea. He was going to make a looking glass that would reflect everything that was good and beautiful in such a way that it would look dreadful or at least not very important. When you looked in it, you would not be able to see any of the good or the beautiful in yourself or in the world. Instead, this looking glass would reflect everything that was bad or ugly and make it look very important. The most beautiful landscapes would look like heaps of garbage, and the best people would look repulsive or would seem stupid. People's faces would be so changed that they could not be recognized, and if there was anything that a person was ashamed of or wanted to hide, you could be sure that this would be just the thing that the looking glass emphasized.
The hobgoblin set about making this looking glass, and when he was finished, he was delighted with what he had done. Anyone who looked into it could only see the bad and the ugly, and all that was good and beautiful in the world was distorted beyond recognition.
One day the hobgoblin's assistants decided to carry the looking glass up to the heavens so that even the angels would look into it and see themselves as ugly and stupid. They hoped that perhaps even God himself would look into it! But, as they reached the heavens, a great invisible force stopped them and they dropped the dreadful looking glass. And as it fell, it broke into millions of pieces.
And now came the greatest misfortune of all. Each of the pieces was hardly as large as a grain of sand, and they flew about all over the world. If anyone got a bit of glass in his eye there it stayed, and then he would see everything as ugly or distressing. Everything good would look stupid. For every tiny splinter of the glass possessed the same power that the whole glass had!
Some people got a splinter in their hearts, and that was dreadful, too, for then their hearts turned into lumps of ice and could no longer feel love.
The hobgoblin watched all this and he laughed until his sides ached. And still the tiny bits of glass flew about, And now we will hear all about it....
Adapted from "The Snow Queen,"by Hans Christian Andersen
The Inner Critic is like the bit of mirror that makes us see a distorted picture. It is that inner voice that criticizes us and speaks about us in a disparaging way. It makes everything look ugly. Most of us are not even aware that it is a voice or a self speaking inside of us because its constant judgments have been with us since early childhood and its running critical commentary feels like a natural part of ourselves. It develops early in our lives, absorbing the judgments of the people around us and the expectations of the society in which we live. When we talk about this critical voice, please keep in mind that this Inner Critic is the voice within us that criticizes us, whereas the Judge is the self within us that criticizes other people.
The most EFFECTIVE self-help book I've read in years.......2002-01-17
I had just finshed Martin Seligman's Learned Optimism and was finally having some success dealing with my depression and anxiety when my wife gave me a copy of Embracing Your Inner Critic. She'd picked the book up a year or two earlier and lost track of it in the "to read" piles. This book really grabbed me. I've never really been comfortable with the various "inner child" labels I come across in therapy, but the term "inner critic" really resonated with me. I was all teed up and ready for this book by the optimism I was discovering within myself and starting to develop thanks to Seligman's book.
I think I wore out a couple of highlighters going through Embracing Your Inner Critic. My first thoughts were "How do these people know ME so well?" but I came to realize that I am not alone. That there are lots of us blaming ourselves in order to "protect" ourselves from outside criticism. I'm learning that beating my imagined critics to the punch by criticising myself sooner and harder than anyone else would is not really helping myself but rather pushing me deeper into the muck of depression.
I realized my inner critic was a pretty good ventroliquist. I had been blaming everyone else for saying all the negative stuff I was actually saying about myself. The book helped me to start moving away from adversarial relationships with my critics, both real and imagined. Now I'm learning to listen to my inner critic as kind of distant early warning system, a helpful "heads up" rather than a broadside of self-loathing. For the first time I'm seeing a world full of potential allies rather than adversaries. The Voice Dialogue technique is a lot like cognitve therapy and like cognitive therapy it requires regular practice for full benefit. But the rewards of the techniques I'm learning from these two books have provided me with strong motivation to stick with it.
A book that will open your eyes.......2000-11-17
If you are suffering from low self esteem, if your days are filled with destructive and incessant attacks from your Inner Critic, read this. It's an easy read that unfolds logically and intuitively - half way through you'll begin to anticipate where the authors are going because what they are saying makes so much sense. This book will open your eyes to the various "voices" we harbor and will help you understand the productive role the Critic was meant to play. It will show you how to get your Critic back on your side, helping you, instead of attacking you and making you feel like your life is a failure.

The cuisine of Lebanon is one of the most diverse in the world. With its unique landscapes, from Mediterranean beaches to mountainous pine forests, a wide range of foods are grown to supply the bounty for Lebanese tables. Customer Reviews:
great! even if you're nto a vegetarian.......2006-07-09
i lived for many years in the middle east, and i think this is one of the best, concise books that i have ever read on the subject. plus if you're vegetarian, it's just one more bonus. highly recommended!
Wonderful Vegetarian Book.......2002-08-08
I must first preface that I am not a vegetarian. I am third generation Lebanese-American and love Lebanese food, so people are always sending me cookbooks, and this book was just such a gift. This book has some very good recipies, however, I found some of them incomplete or difficult to follow. Having cooked Lebanese food myself now for a few years, I have been able overcome these difficulties. I highly recommend this books version of Fattoush and it's two Lentil Soup recipies. Those three recipies stand out the most. The food in this cookbook is healthy and very tasty. If you live in an are where fresh produce is readily available here is a book that can help you use it all.
Quite Pleased!.......2001-08-11
This is a great cookbook. The recipes are all pretty simple - one thing I like (haven't tried it yet but I will) is that there are even some hand drawn pictures on how to do stuffed grape leaves. I do wish there were some more "stories" with the recipes. I enjoy getting to read about the foods and have some context in this cookbook you pretty much just get the recipes. But they're good and straightforward. I've recently been turning into a vegetarian (for ethical reasons but the health benefits are great too) and I was looking for a cookbook that would replace my lebanese cookbook that is more meat focused. Thos one does it for me and I completely feel comfortable wiith giving up my old standby. I guess because the recipes are straightforward (i.e, not a lot of extra embellishment) it give the chef more leeway to throw in a few extra spices here and there which I enjoy doing. I certainly recommend it and I'm psyched to have it as part of my collection.
Absolutely delightful!.......1999-01-31
"From The Tables of Lebanon" is an absolute culinary delight. Every recipe is authentic. Every recipe is delicious! My husband and I loved this vegetarian book and use its recipes often. Bravo to both authors!
overall good.......1999-01-31
I cooked more than 20 recipes from this book and most of them turned well. If you want novel tasting vegetarian recipes buy this book. However if you do not like garlic + olive oil + lemon + salt dressing stay away. The instructions are sometimes incomplete and there are lots of duplicate recipes. However, they end up tasting good.

lucious landscapes.......2006-03-14
This book was purchased to go along with a class I took by the author. The infomation was very helpful and allowed me to begin creating my first art quilt. Joyce takes you step by step and simplifies the process. The book is very easy to understand. I recommend this book to anyone that has a desire to try their hands at creating an art quilt.
not so lusious.......2005-01-28
Though this book has lovely quilts, it is very light on technique. It is more a showcase for the artists quilts. I purchased the book hoping for concise clear instructions and possibly some patterns to get started; this book has no patterns and is really light on instruction. If you enjoy looking at beautiful quilts only, then you will enjoy this book. If you are looking for something with a lot of technical info, keep looking, this is not the book for you.
NEW FUN!!!.......2004-05-21
This book explores a whole variety of ways to have fun, fun, FUN with Landscape Quilting. The directions are well written, the photos clear and understandable, and the overall context invites one to get to the fabric stash and jump right in. Okay, okay, so these quilts won't wind up on your bed. But they are a wonderful example of how to decorate your home and walls!

Great tool for parents!.......2002-11-26
I just finished LOVE AND ANGER and I have to say it is going to save my life! I was acting like a complete ogre with my kids (8 and 11) and was feeling incredibly guilty about screwing them up for life. My joke with friends about the therapy my kids were destined for, "Well there's another hour on the couch for so and so," was not so funny any more. This book was the answer to my prayers. It has given me so many practical tips on how to react to my children in less angry ways. I am already finding myself listening and empathizing more with my kids' feelings. It is a must read for parents.
Amazing, tremendous read........2002-10-29
I am a father of 3 wonderful children but our relationship has been somewhat rocky at times. Samalin's book has not only helped me deal with my anger and feel less guilty but it has also greatly improved my relationship with all three of my kids. Samalin's book gives tons of practical examples of how to speak to your children in an affirmative rather than negative manner, and get them to do what you want without causing resentment. I've read this book twice and I plan to read it again so that I will continue to apply it's many useful concepts. Once you read this book you will definitely notice that you are more in control, calmer and can communicate with your children in a much more effective manner. This is by far the best book on parenting I have ever read and is an essential parenting resource.
Phenomenal Book.......2002-10-29
I believe this book is a must read for all parents. Nancy Samalin focuses on common triggers for anger towards our kids and provides numerous techniques for effectively dealing with that anger. One of the many things I found helpful about this book was that it allowed me to step back, think for a moment, and then respond rather that simply react to stressful, anger inducing situations. As a result, I've found that I am yelling less and my son's outbursts have become much less frequent. Not only do I feel less guilty about my anger but now I know how to deal with it in a much more effective manner. Reacting rather than thinking was really hurting our relationship and I didn't know what to do about it before buying this book. I recommend it highly!
I'm not crazy; maybe you aren't either.......2002-07-09
After my wife and I expanded our family from 1 child to 3 (we adopted a 4 year old boy; my wife gave birth to a baby girl 6 weeks later; we already had a 6 year old boy), I found myself yelling (screaming) at the boys more often than not. This book taught me something fundamental: that I'm not a totally broken parent. From this foundation I have been able to improve my parenting style (and thus the situation) enough to really believe that things will work out for us.
a very good parenting book.......2002-06-19
Haven't worked my way through all the book yet but plan to make notes along the way that I can refer to later. It is easy to read and I find the anecdotal tales very interesting. It is reassuring to know that other people aren't the perfect moms either.

Book Description
J.J.P. Oud was a famed modern architect; his European contemporaries are Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In Leiden in 1917, Oud, with the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg and the expatriate Hungarian Vilmos Huszar, and fellow Hollanders Jan Wils and Bart van der Leck formed a collaboration between artists and architects a movement they called De Stijl. The loose knit group slowly disintegrated, but in terms of architectural style the movement sought a unity between art and society that flirted with Constructivism, developed theories of Neoplasticism, and what Oud called Cubism. Although these intellectualized theories seldom resulted in architectural realities, the realized projects were spectacular and they include Oud's director's hut at the Oud-Mathenesse housing development, 1923, and the facade of the Cafe De Unie, Rotterdam, 1925. This annotated bibliography documents not only the literature on Oud but also Oud's own writings. A biographical essay, this book examines the place afforded Oud in the international literature of architecture and traces his career which spanned fifty-seven years. Architectural students and scholars will benefit from this guide to the major archives, minor collections, and listing of Oud's projects and the books in his own professional library. Bibliographic entries are alphabetically arranged, by books and monographs and by journals, within chronological divisions. Entries are cross-referenced to a works list and index.
