Book Description
Edward Wild, the controversial Union general who headed the all-black African Brigade in the Civil War, was one of the most loved and most hated figures of the 19th century. The man was neither understood nor appreciated by military or civilian, black or white, Northerner or Southerner. After enlisting at the outbreak of the war, Wild was promoted to Brigadier General and placed in charge of the United States Colored Troops. In fulfilling his assignment to free slaves and gain recruits, he took three women as hostages and ordered a great deal of property destruction. He freed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of slaves and settled them safely on Roanoke Island. Wild then not only recruited the newly freed blacks but trained them and gave them the opportunity to prove their worth in battle. Nobody, it seems, was happy about serving with them, but the African Brigade performed courageously in several battles.
Wild did some inexplicable things. Were his actions typical of the 19th century or did he act outside the norm? Was the criticism he suffered from his fellow Union officers validor was it due to personality conflicts? Did he deserve to be arrested, court-martialed, and even wiped from the history booksor was he the victim of discrimination? This work draws its answers from extensive research and includes many rare letters to and from Wild, including one from one of the North Carolinian hostages.

The audacious, opinionated, and unconventional Wild.......2006-01-27
General Edward A. Wild was one of the more controversial officers of the Civil War. A staunch abolitionist, after losing an arm at South Mountain (prelude to Antietam), Wild aided Massachusetts governor John Andrews in raising all-black fighting units. A number of black regiments were created and together were known as the African Brigade. Sent to South Carolina, Wild and his men arrived only weeks after the action at Battery Wagner that saw the heroism of 54th Massachusetts Volunteers (Colored) and the death of its leader, Robert Shaw.
Wild was an unyielding defender of his black troops and their ability to be the equal of any soldiers in the army. His outspokenness and, at times, disobedience of orders, on their behalf got Wild in trouble. He hated Southern sympathizers and especially guerrilla fighters; his treatment of them was at time horrendous. In 1864 he led a raid through northeastern North Carolina against these "land pirates" (Wild's words). Sometimes prisoners taken (these might include civilians, even women, and not just soldiers) would be tortured, even hanged. Authorities North and South became outraged at Wild's actions. Eventually he was court martialed and demoted (for disobeying orders and not for his treatment of others). Suspended from the battlefield for 6 months, he returned in time to lead the XXV Corps before Richmond in April 1865. After the war Wild stirred up more controversy with his confiscation of private property in Georgia as a member of the Freedman's Bureau. The last years of his life were spent silver and gold mining, first in Nevada, then in Canada, and finally in Colombia, South America, where he died in 1891.
His wife probably summoned up Wild best: "He was very heroic, he would not give up, he had a very strong will and proved it all his life." Sometimes that "strong will" got him in a lot of trouble and prevented him from seeing how his actions might be misconstrued or outright wrong. But it also made him a hero to his black troops, who saw a man willing to fight for his convictions and their rights.
Casstevens presents a thoroughly researched and detailed account of her subject's life (though 90% of the book deals only with his Civil War years). The information is presented in bullet fashion: short subsections within each chapter dealing with specific events or incidents. Style is not a concern with Casstevens, only presenting the facts in a clear, straightforward manner. In that she succeeds well. The notes, bibliography, and index are excellent; the book is definitely designed for the researcher in mind.

Book Description
In this groundbreaking book, psychotherapist Richard O'Connor explains how a wide range of ever-more-common problems-both emotional and physical-are in fact side effects of 21st-century life. When our fight-or-flight response is stuck in the "on" position, the over-stimulation and complex demands of the modern world can have severe long-term effects on health and well-being, sometimes in ways people don't even recognize until it's too late.
Combining expert authority with down-to-earth language, Undoing Perpetual Stress reveals how to put an end to this mode of existence, replacing anxious responses with a new and more effective set of skills. Readers will learn how to:
- Regain a measure of control over their environments
- Cope with stressors calmly and constructively
- Make health and happiness a daily priority
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful.......2007-01-06
Well worth reading if you suffer from chronic, generalized anxiety. While this book is not a substitute for professional help, it certainly gives suffers of anxiety and depression an excellent insight into the many causes of these disorders and offers ways to temper the effects of these afflictions. I would say this book is a very good adjunct to individual or group therapy.
Excellent, comprehensive, a winner.......2007-01-04
This book has been a godsend to me. The author describes & discusses so many aspects of stress, and why we are so stressed-out in the early 21st century. The volume is densely packed with information, & I find that it helps me to link up my expectations of life, with the realities of limits, relationships, physical and emotional care, and the kinds of situations that help anyone to be healthy - or perpetually stressed. I am not done with this book yet; I want to savor & absorb all that it has to offer. I highly recommend it to you. It's a great read and a wonderful ongoing reference book. You will be glad to have bought it.
Great info buried in to many unnecessary pages.......2006-09-18
At 459 mind numbing pages I would suggest saving yourself about 15 hours of reading time and pick up "Stress free for good" by Luskin and Pelletier, both books have the same goal to reduce your perpetual stress mode, both authors have the same basic credentials however this book (Undoing perpetual stress) goes on and on about the author, his last book, his theories about stress, and all his opinions. "Stress free for good" gives you quick principle to use now. Buy this book if you find stress incredible fascinating and would like to study it for 15 hours. The book is sound scientifically and has a lot of great points, but who has time to read a big scientific book when you are looking for relief from stress now? This book stressed me out.
A masterpiece.......2006-07-19
If you are prepared to give up suffering in the modern world, read and digest this classic guidebook. It will help you learn about your own mind and emotions and how to make yourself stronger through insight.
Mindfulness helpful for Non-Specific Illness.......2005-09-17
I've just finished reading a copy of this book that I had checked out from the library. I found that I would want to read certain parts again, particularly the mindfulness exercises. So I ordered a copy for my library. As a person who has been diagnosed some time ago with Fibromyalgia Syndrome, one of the Non-Specific Illnesses referred to in the book, I was especially interested in the Biopyschosocial view which I believe this author represents. I have been dissatisfied with my medical diagnosis and the lack of treatments when the condition is considered strictly medical. I have been ready to accept/integrate a mind/body model of this condition and for most of the book I was willing to accept this model. I take issue with some of Mr. O'Connors assertions that "most" people with non-specific illnesses have a history of anxiety or depression. He may have cited studies, but I did not see the footnotes. And he states unequivocally that these non-specific illnesses "ARE NOT MEDICAL ILLNESSES". This statement somehow seems at odds with the acceptance throughout the book of the reality of the physical symptoms and the fact that the brain is a part of the physical body. Even mainstream research now acknowledges that Fibromyalgia is the result of disordered brain chemistry. While his intentions are undoubted noble, wanting people to get over the idea that there is a simple explanation or cure for non-specific disorders, this assertion undoes much of the persuading of the earlier parts of the book. If the mind affects the body, and the body affects the mind and both affect the brain, then why be so strident on this point? I am going to start to practice mindfulness as a part of my life, along with considering cognitive/behavioral therapy. I don't believe (any longer) in quick cures. But a multi-disiplinary approach is for me, and I am not dismissing my physician's advice for a strictly mindfulness approach.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite cookbooks.......2007-02-01
I have owned this cookbook for a couple of years now, and I use it all the time. My husband & I have sampled many of the recipes and have never been let down. From the Peking Nooles & Scallops, to the Blueberry Lemon Muffins, to the Mexican Mole Chili, to every variety of roast chicken you could imagine, this book has as many delectable dishes to offer as the title suggests. Trust me: you WON'T be disappointed.
A definite keeper!!!.......2007-01-20
The fact that this book was originally published in 1997 and that I am writing a review for it in 2007 is a testimonial to just how great this book is. It is my "go to" cookbook and definetely one that everyone should have. We like to stray beyond the "meat and potatoes" recipes and this book gives a nice variety of ethnic recipes with ingredients that you can find in your local supermarket. It's just a great cookbook, and I highly recommend it.
We Are What We Eat -- Oh So True.......2006-07-19
Wanna cookup something a little different, like say a sample of Indian cusine on your hubby's plate? Well, tried the "Curried Mashed Potatoes" on Page 354 of this delightful lowfat cookbook. The peas mixed with the potatoes set off with a tangy curry powder makes for a tasty potatoe dish. There are a lot of other tasty, lowfat recipes in this book that I come back to again and again. like the "Pasta e Fagioli Soup" on Page 141, a perfect beginning to a meal. After all, who says all meals must start with salad. However, if you believe that, try the "Summer Herb Tomato Salad on Page 70.
With this book you can eat well and eat healthy at the same time, something my husband didn't think possible till I started pruning recipes from this booka and a few other. Ms. Golson really knows her stuff. She opens the book with the words "There is no longer any doubt that we are what we eat," and that is oh so true. If you want to slim down, but not feel like you're eating cardboard, give this book a look, you won't be sorry.

My favorite cookbook.......2005-11-28
Ever since I bought this cookbook, it has been a staple in my kitchen. Not only are the recipes easy to follow and easy to eat(!), but the book is very informative in and of itself. I have learned many shortcuts that I never knew. A definite winner!
Too much processed food and too little taste.......2005-04-11
I have to be one of the dissenters on this book. I have the 1,000 series Indian, Mexican, and Italian and all are wonderful. This one however is headed for my local used book trader.
There is no imagination in this book. I feel that the author just doesn't like food. She makes no effort to impart any taste what so ever in the recipes. Plus the approach uses lots of processed foods; things like egg substitutes, low-fat everything, and canned goods galore. I personally feel that it's possible to eat a fairly low fat diet, avoid processed foods (which I think are just as harmful as the fat), and actually have something that tastes good.
Plus the author must have taken to heart that you can't have any meat other than chicken or fish. Now I know that many cuts of beef can be high in fat, but an occasional, well seasoned, portion controlled, lean piece of beef isn't going to totally ruin your diet. But not so here. If it's not chicken, poultry, or fish; you can forget it. (And whatever happened to pork, the other white meat?)
Shop around, there are better low-fat books to be had.
My star ratings:
One star - couldn't finish the book
Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author
Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.
Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.
Five stars - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.

Customer Reviews:
A so-so book on cheap-looking crafts for a wedding.......2006-10-24
I couldn't decide if this book merited 2 or 3 stars, so I rounded up. I was disappointed by this book; there are not tons of ideas in it, and I thought most of them look "handmade" in a cheap way, not in a cool way. There are a few funny ideas for table placecards, although they definitely look cheap, too. I hadn't thought about this before, but I think this book taught me that if you want truly elegant invitations and decorations, you can't glue them together yourself or create them based on plastic toys from the dollar store. All in all, the book is worth leafing through, but really not worth purchasing. And I am sure I won't actually try any of these ideas.
This one is classic for brainstorming ideas........2005-09-29
If you are at all crafty, you'll get tons of inspiration from these ideas. While you may not do these projects exactly, they are sure to spark more ideas. Definately a great resource for the do it yourselfer.
Much more flair and individuality than it's peers........2004-04-08
I found almost all projects in the book to be interesting and simple to do. The authours have complied a great range of funky unique projects, I especially like the origami invites, wind-up place cards and photo booth candle, all quick, easy & cheap to make. The best wedding book I have seen.

Product Description
This charming book of hand-colored papercuts is guaranteed to delight gardeners young and old, active and armchair. It is a delicious garden alphabet, a convention as old as the sixteenth century, but one that seems to lend itself especially well to the advantages of high relief, gaily-colored papercuts.
In this vivid garden, where A is for Arbor and Z is for Zucchini, artist Wisnewski brings her talents to bear not only on flowers, shrubs, herbs, and fruit, but also on the resident fauna: bees and cats, children, dogs, and rabbits. The result is no static florilegium, but a witty and whimsical beehive of various and charming activity.
Book Description
Children, like trees, need a little space to grow. So, why do we as parents hinder the development of our children by being overly protective, indulgent, and assertive with them?
When Parents Love Too Much explores the all-to-common problems of over-protection, guilt, low self-esteem, and family conflict which spring from excessive parental attachment. The authors skillfully show how children, smothered by well-intentioned parents, can become adults who remain dependent on their parents, struggle to establish a sense of self, have difficulty making decisions, and often find their personal and intimate relationships disappointing.
Authors Ashner and Meyerson write to help not only parents who "love too much" and can't let go of their children, but also to adults who suffer from the consequences of their parents' unhealthy dependence. This book offers solutions and hope for those of us who need to learn to detach with love.
About the Authors:
Laurie Ashner is a writer, certified educational therapist, psychotherapist, and columnist for Chicago Life magazine. She has appeared on numerous national radio and television programs.
Mitch Meyerson is a licensed psychotherapist and an expert in the treatment of dysfunctional relationships and impaired self-esteem. He frequently lectures and conducts seminars on personal growth.
Ashner and Meyerson are also co-authors of the book When is Enough, Enough?
"This is an important book. It definitely touched some of my parenting issues."
--John Bradshaw, author of Creative Love, Homecoming, and Healing the Shame that Binds You.
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking and insightful.......2007-06-08
This book was recommended to me by a close friend. I am recently engaged and have been having trouble with my mother since my fiance and I have began our relationship. Because I am an only child and am estranged from my extended family, I felt that me upcoming nuptials would be a time to rejoice and begin a new chapter in my life of merging two families together. Needless to say, the opposite occured and I was often left wondering why there is this tremendous strain between my mother and I. Why is it that I am so sad during the happiest time of my life? While reading this book, I felt like it dug deep into my childhood and pinpointed all of the important events that ultimately shaped me as an adut. At times, I felt like it was written especially for me! I focused on how controlling parents can run your life so much that their concerns become your own with realizing it. I discovered that my self-criticism is a result of my parental relationship and I began to feel vindicated and free. This is a great book if you want to dig in deep into the reasons why your parents became who they are and what you became as a result of it as well.
An Emotional Lifesaver When I Was Going Through Rough Times!.......2004-12-31
Mitch and Laurie have compassionately written about a phenomenon that is not often talked about - one where parents desperately love and cling to their children, to the point of emotionally smothering them.
When Parents Love Too Much was a critical read in my own life that helped me see the insanity of the relationship with my mother. Not only did Mitch and Laurie pinpoint exactly what I was going through, through this book they challenged me to rethink my role as a daughter and ultimately as a parent myself.
This book touched on many issues I faced as the child of a parent who loved too much and gave answers to the underlying questions and concerns that I had. More importantly, I found specific strategies to help me disentangle myself from the emotional bondage.
When Parents Love Too Much provides a thorough look into the lives of both parent and child caught in "over-loving." Without blaming either party, this book helped me regain confidence and belief in myself. It was a tremendous help to me and continues to be a book I refer back to.
Poorly written, repetitive.......2004-03-29
Too bad that this is the one book out there on a very important topic. The authors repeat themselves, contradict themselves, and blow up the material--enough for a good article--into a fat book. That said, the book can be helpful. Just be prepared to skim through. You really don't need to read the same few ideas over, and over, and over, and over again.
Boy! Could I relate!.......2002-01-18
I bought this book because I was getting way too stressed about disappointments in my children's lives. Objectively I knew that through a little pain comes growth, but I still couldn't stop my almost physical pain when my kids encountered failure. I just wanted to rush in, take away the pain, and save them. I knew this was wrong, but I needed to better understand why I was thinking this way before I could change.
When I read this book, I clearly saw what was going on. I also saw the beginnings of signs in my kids that I was "over parenting" them. I also saw and understood alot of what was going on in my friend's families (they are all now reading this).
The info is not EARTH shaking, but it is illuminating. the book is easy to read, but I wish there had been more about how to change your parenting skills. (really only one or two chapters on this, the rest is examples of loving too much and the effect it has on the kids, and the kids in their adulthood).
