Since the author is the main character, you know she lived to write about her tragic ordeal: breast cancer treatment that literally killed her heart. . . muscle. This story, as awesome as it sounds is a page turner. You won't be able to put it down. Any woman who has breast cancer or knows someone who has had it, should read this book. There is some excellent advice in it. And in the end, it's actually UPLIFTING!

This is human interest story that will move you to tears of joy and make you marvel at Nancy's indomitable will to live. Reading this story made me realize how lucky I am to have the health that I do. Nancy Pedder is a phenomenally strong woman who has never let her health issues cloud her positivity and zest for life. She has dealt with challenges that would make a lesser human crumble, in a way that is to be admired and respected. Nancy should be an inspiration to all that are organ recipients and the families of organ donors. I admire how she continues to make the most of the second shot at life that she got through her donated heart and how she is determined to lead the charge to promote organ donation.

Once I began reading, I couldn't put the book down until the I finished it! This book has numerous endorsements from the medical profession, but like Nancy Pedder, I too am a cancer survivor, and this book is an INCREDIBLE account of the author's ordeal. Pedder truly has a knack for telling her story; one which will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. Not only will the reader be amazed and astonished at the incredible odds Nancy overcame and SURVIVED, but also this book tugs at your heart (no pun intended) and will hopefully be a positive impact on organ donation. Nancy's story makes you not only want to stand and cheer that you are allive, but also makes you want to thank God each day for the many blessings we sometimes overlook. This is the MOST positive book I have ever read on surviving cancer - and as a 17 year cancer suvivor, I should know. Everyone should read this book!

Save your money and don't buy this book. An hour watching Opra will provide more information than you'll ever find on the pages of this lightweight text. There are far better books available for people looking to overcome their addiction, as well as loved ones seeking a better understanding of addictions.

Clear readable practical education and guidance on dealing with your or your loved one's addiction. Covers all the most important treatment approaches without moralizing and helps you choose what is most helpful or appropriate to your situation. I have already recommended to two patients who both found it tremendously helpful.

Forget the title-This is a really smart book!.......2005-02-05

The title of this series always turns me off--so formulaic and usually simplistic. But this book is different! The format is simple and the material is presented in the clear, crisp and easily readable style typical of this series but this book is also truly wise, practical and compassionate in its approach. There is up-to-date information on medications, the physiology of addiction, treatments and groups that can offer support to the addicted person and plenty of practical advice for those on the sidelines (family, friends, spouses) who want to help but don't understand the problem. The book makes practical suggestions for treatments/groups that can help, how to deal with relapse cravings and moving forward in life without relying on an ultimately self-destructive habit. I have 30 years of experience as a therapist and this is one of the few selp-help books that I respect. I plan to give it to my clients and to recommend it to colleagues. Buy it---you won't be disappointed!

The best book I've read on addiction--really helpful!.......2005-01-25

I can't recommend this book too highly. I have been working in this field for years and have searched for a book that would not turn off people struggling to come to terms with addictive problems. This book is easy to read, concise and presented in a manner that invites the reader to stay with the material. In addition to giving great information on the biology of addiction, it is full of excellent suggestions on how to practically go about attacking the problem. And it is optomistic! So important when someone feels overwhelmed by the problem and has struggled, often unsuccessfully, to change behaviors that are self-defeating. I would also advise relatives and friends of addictive persons to use this book to help them cope better with this issue and to find hope.

A great "user-friendly" book!.......2005-01-21

I've been waiting years for this book! As a physician I see many patients with addiction problems, yet I've never had a truly "user-friendly" book to recommend to the average reader. Now I do! This book is easy to read, it's concise, and it covers virtually all the important addiction topics in its well organized 20 chapters. The topics are covered in a sensitive, heart-felt manner while delivering critical information. It is obvious that Shaw, Ritvo, and Irvine know their topic and have empathy for clients and friends plagued by addictions. If you want to feel respected by the authors of the book you read, this is a good book. Even if you're struggling with an addiction, yourself, I can't imagine feeling 'talked down'. As they say, addiction can happen to anyone - no matter how strong or strong-minded.

Light in calories but Heavy-weight of CookBook.......2001-01-19

Years ago I like others stumbled upon Cooking Light at the newstand. Having been a subscriber now for years I can attest that it is only one of two cooking magazines I subscribe to, read and use the recipes. This volume has many recipes I constantly use, e.g. see their Christmas dishes, the Balsamic Lamb Chops are a knockout. Also, the section on stuffed Chicken Breasts has kept me contiually slitting and stuffing with exotic mixtures.

The Best Recipe Book Out There.......2000-05-31

I was tired of making the same old stuff every week, so I looked for a book that would also help keep down our cholesterol and fat intake. I found this book and haven't missed using it a week since I got it. It is great not only for the healthy recipes, but for how the recipes compare to fatty ones and taste even better in my opinion. They are pretty easy to make and range from cakes and goodies to detailed Italian meals. It also gives you a selection of the same dish( ie. several kinds of lasagna to choose from). Recipes are easy to find and several have enticing photos to encourage you to try them. A "must have"in the kitchen. I'm buying it, and it's predicesors, for birthday gifts for friends...they'll "eat it up".

I have only had this book two weeks and I have been cooking from it non-stop. The Cooking Light staff has brought healthy eating into the '90s and made it accessiable for everyone. The desserts and baked goods are beyond compare. Simple main dishes and wonderful treatment of vegtable side dishes abound. I love this book, it is better than any of their previous compilations to date!

The recipes are great - it's nice to have a year subscription compiled into one book. The only downfall to the book is that it is missing the great index provided by the magazine that groups recipes into catagories. I just pulled my "97 index from the Dec issue of Cooking Light magazine as a reference and now have the greatest cook book around.

Pretty Good for a broad range.......2002-11-27

This book is pretty good for being such a broad range of species
and an all around type of book.In spite of the fact it touches on a good portion of subjects and problems from birth to death,
it still manages to impart a lot of info needed. it benefits the multi-pet family the most and secondly the dog and/or cat owners.For it's genre , an all encompasssing pet care book, it does the job quite well.It is what is expected from Rodale press
--balanced and a lot of info with some common sense added.
I am a big dog person but I love other animals ,too.I think a fish,reptilian etc. owner would be disappointed in it. it truly is mostly for the dog + cat owner and a bit of bird and rabbit
and ferret tips are in there....there are a few snake and lizard
also...but of course not as extensively.
So, I would say any dog or cat owner will definitely like the book, especially the newer owners and the younger owners. it will also help one to decide WHICH pet is for you as you read and see the responsibilities of different pets.

Now, I'm just a dude... metrosexual maybe, but still just a dude. So I don't know my @$$ from my elbow when it comes to making invitations. But this book made everything very accessible. I see some complaints about the need for additional software, but I found I could implement a lot of the suggestions using apps that I already had on my computer.

Bottom line: Friendly, well-written and full of ideas.

I designed my wedding invitations using this book. I have almost no artistic talent, so I had my doubts. But this book is filled with so many great ideas and simple instructions that I was able to put together a beautiful design in an afternoon.
I wound up with invitations that were more original (and much less expensive) than anything I could've bought at the stationery story.
Since then, I've given this book to five newly engaged friends--they're thrilled!

They should have added to the title, "With our software that you can purchase seperately." There's a cd included, big deal, just gives you a taste of what you can buy. I ended up downloading a program for free to make my invitations. There is some info on paper, styles, etc. that may be helpful, but oh, why am I trying to be nice? The title is misleading and this was a waste of money.

This is just a teaser to get you to buy the more expensive book. The accompanying cd has almost nothing on it, just a few borders and pictures. Fonts are supposed to be available for download from the website, but they offer nothing substantially different from the Word fonts. A waste of time and money.
