Book Description
Hitler's Gladiator is the life of German general Josef 'Sepp' Dietrich, who rose from private soldier in the Kaiser's army to command an SS panzer army in the closing stages of the Second World War.
Dietrich was one of the more notorious but intriguing characters of the Nazi era. It is impossible to disassociate him from the excesses of the Hitler regime, he was close to the heart of the party and Hitler himself and was twice convicted as a war criminal.
However, he was also an effective and much admired military commander; he was devoted to his men and led them through some of the fiercest fighting and harshest conditions experienced during the war.
In this revised and extensively illustrated paperback edition, Charles Messenger provides an objective account of the life and times of Sepp Dietrich, painting a vivid picture of life under the Third Reich.
Customer Reviews:
One and only Sepp biography..........2007-06-05
There was a lot of man in front of the eyes when you take a look at the history of the Third Reich. And there is alot of things to say about them. When the SS matters, one can easily count Sepp Dietrich`s name in the top 5. So he must have been one of the most well-known persons in the Third Reich history, but not.
This biography especially deals with the wars of Sepp Dietrich. I couldn`t find many useful information about his early life and what did he do just before the WW2 between 1933-1939 (the book spared only 20 pages for that). The 47 years of his life between 1892-1939 covers only 70 pages and most of them are not directly about Sepp, only giving a brief summary of the events.
Sepp will be still a mystery after reading this book. And many new questions will arise about him.
But there is a big advantage of this book. It`s the one and only. So I won`t say "Don`t buy this one". Read it if you have interest about Sepp but minimilise your expectations.
First and Only Biography in English of Controversial German War Hero.......2007-05-26
Josef "Sepp" Dietrich was a charismatic leader of the Waffen-SS. He fought in World War I and became the first true military leader of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler in 1933, which became the first division of the Waffen-SS in 1941. Acting on the orders of Hitler (not to mention Himmler, Goering, and others), he was directly responsible for executing several SA members in the June 1934 Nazi party purge of its enemies that became known as the Night of the Long Knives.
He fought in all major German fronts in World War II, except for North Africa, including the invasion of Poland, the invasion of France, the evacuation at Dunkirk, the invasions of Greece and Yugoslavia, the invasion of Russia, the defense of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the defense of Vienna. Throughout these campaigns Sepp Dietrich and the accomplishments of his men were lauded in the German press to the point that he rivalled Rommel in press coverage and adulation.
At first commanding the SS LAH until it grew to divisional size and strength during Operation Barbossa, Sepp Dietrich later became commander of the First SS Panzer Corps, and eventually, after his successful maneouveres in defending the invasion of Normandy, commander of the Sixth SS Panzer Army.
Sepp Dietrich's contemporaries in the Wehrmacht, namely the Prussian officer class, acknowledged his personal skills in motivating and leading his men but most believed that he had risen above his abilities in becoming if not a corps commander then certainly commander of his own army. Nonetheless, his successes against overwhelming odds continued at both the corps and army level and his few failures were more often than not based on factors outside of his control, such as Hitler's micromanagement of strategy and tactics, which eventually led to a rift between the two men.
At the end of the war, Sepp Dietrich was sentenced to life imprisonment at a war crimes trial over allegations of his involvement, due to vague orders regarding the taking of prisoners, in the deaths of numerous U.S. soldiers at Malmedy during the Ardennes offensive. This was later reduced to 25 years and he ended up serving 10. (No one was ever executed for the Malmedy massacre because it came to light after the trial was over that confessions used at the trial were obtained by beatings, torture, and psychological manipulation, including mock executions.) He was also condemned to death, in absentia, by the Soviets for atrocities committed by the SS LAH during the Battle of Kharkov. Finally, he received a 19-month sentence by a German court for his part in the Night of the Long Knives. Released in 1959, he lived until 1966. Despite his controversial past, six to eight thousand comrades in arms attended his funeral.
Charles Messenger's "Hitler's Gladiator" is the first and only attempt to tell Sepp Dietrich's story in English. (There is also one in French but inexplicably none in German.) In so doing, the author does an excellent job of objectively assessing Sepp Dietrich's history based on meticulous and thorough research. Woven throughout that history is also a history of the Nazi party and World War II. Included are a sprinkling of maps and two sections of photos. Essential reading for students of World War II in Europe, Nazism, Hitler, or the Waffen-SS.

Customer Reviews:
Less than I hoped for.......2000-04-01
Benacerraf is a charming writer, but I was somewhat disappointed with the book. I was hoping to find some new insights into the creative process in science and some sparkling anecdotes about this Nobel Prize winner's colleagues. I did not find much of either.
Book Description
For those who want to help somebody with Asperger Syndrome find and keep a satisfying job, this book is a vital tool. Gail Hawkins guides readers through the entire process of gaining employment, from building a supportive team, identifying and addressing workplace challenges, to securing an appropriate post. Including practical tips on topics such as finding potential employers and creating a dazzling CV, as well as sensitive advice on assessing when somebody is ready for work, and how, when and where to disclose a disability to an employer, Hawkins' well-tested approach aims to provide all the information needed for a fast, realistic, and successful path to fulfilling employment.
Customer Reviews:
Very positive and encouraging!.......2007-06-07
I found this book very positive and encouraging! After I read this book, I was very pleased to see that there is somebody out there who realizes that people with Asperger's Syndrome are capable of learning the skills they need to become successful members of society, if they are given all the help that they need. I wish that there were a lot more people who realized this! I hope that there will be in the not-too-distant future!
Useful, but for a limited audience.......2006-11-07
This book is addressed to the person working on finding work for someone with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), assuming that is someone different than the person with AS (Aspie). Hawkins has a relatively modest definition for "work that works." She just means "a job that someone can get and keep," which would be a very nice thing indeed for a lot of Aspies. This book doesn't really address the subjects of work as mission and vocation, finding work where one's deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.
What's good about this book? It addresses some issues that might predicably arise within the family of the Aspie. It talks about how a "job coach" could be use to help an Aspie at a job. It gives some good nuts-and-bolts advice on how a consultant might assess an Aspie for jobs they could do successfully. It gives some tools to help an Aspie negotiate their predictable difficulties. It gives some tips on conducting an interview.
What's not so good about this book? It gives the impression that it would be a good book for the Aspie, as opposed to being addressed to the consultant. I propose the title should be something like "Putting People with Asperger's Syndrome to Work (And Keeping Them There)" An Aspie would look at the cover and wonder "Why are those two women holding that man down? And why doesn't the woman on the right have her shirt tucked in, if they go on and on about Aspies dressing like slobs?" The book could say more about leveraging the obsessive-compulsive aspect of AS in preparing for an interview, acquiring knowledge about the employer, etc.
There is a issue brewing as to whether AS should be considered a disability under the terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This book doesn't address that, but I'm not expecting it to. However, the next book on this subject should.
Knowledge of AS is growing significantly, so to call anything about AS "ultimate" isn't accurate. All the material in this book is valid, and the only reason I don't give it five stars have to do with the comments above.
How to Find Work That Works..........2006-02-24
This valuable resource provides direct service approaches for job development and placement supports. It will be useful for staff training and self-empowerment for those with high functioning autism.
Does it work?.......2006-01-29
The author of this book is a vocational consultant and the founder of an employment agency for people with Asperger syndrome, so it does contain lots of practical advice and useful information. It is intended, not for people on the spectrum themselves, but for those who are helping people on the spectrum to find work, such as other employment advisers, teachers, parents, friends etc. However, it does contain things which you still might find useful if trying to find work for yourself, even though you might find it just a little patronising. This book is not about finding a career, it is about simply getting a job. It's strategy for getting people with Asperger syndrome into work is helping them to be what employers want, and it explains what that is clearly and well.
Exactly the right book!.......2005-05-15
I found this book to be extremely practical and very useful in guiding me through the work finding process for my 21 year old son. It gave realistic strategies that actually worked. My son now has a job! If you want to help your kid or anyone else with ASD find a job, get this book!!

The Amish Cook
Recollections and Recipes from an Old Order Amish Family by Elizabeth Coblentz with Kevin Williams
Ten years ago, aspiring newspaper editor Kevin Williams convinced Elizabeth Coblentz, an Old Order Amish wife and mother, to write a weekly cooking column called "The Amish Cook." Each week Elizabeth shares a family recipe and discusses daily life on her Indiana farm, spent with husband, Ben, and their eight children and 32 grandchildren. THE AMISH COOK, a full-color cookbook based on Elizabeth's columns, compiles more than 75 traditional Amish recipes, photographs of the Coblentz farm, practical gardening tips, cherished family tales, and firsthand accounts of traditional Amish events like corn-husking bees and barn raisings. A truly unique collaboration between a simple Amish grandmother and a modern-day newspaperman, THE AMISH COOK is a poignant and authentic look at a disappearing way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Like always, "The Amish Cook" is great!.......2007-07-11
If you are a fan, as I am, of the weekly Amish Cook newspaper column, this is a must-have for you. There are stories and tidbits of the column and daily life, as well as the recipes. If you like "The Amish Cook," stories about Amish life, or Amish recipes, this book has you covered x 3!! Get it! You'll love it!!!
Great Book.......2007-01-27
This book is just beautiful. The photography is outstanding and I love the stories. I will warn a prospective buyer all the recipies in the book are designed for a large family or large group. (Which suits me fine, I am always being accused of cooking enough to feed an army). My one and only dissapointment in the book is there are no recipies for canning or preserving and I had assumed there would be.
Absolutely love this cookbook........2007-01-11
I absolutely love this cookbook. Everyone should own one of these. The story along with the recipe is great. The recipes are very easy and down to earth!
Much more than just recipes.......2006-09-26
I was look for the Beverly Lewis cookbook when I spied this on a shelf at the book store. I looked through it and saw that is was a mix of recipes stories and respectful photos. I bought it right then, and have tried several recipes two of my faves are for Oatmeal Pie and homemade bread. I saw that some people were disappointed in the recipes, (with some appearing to be very "English") But I have noticed that in many of the Amish cookbooks, the truth is that they do eat some of those dishes and they do use some premade items depending on their district.
Overall I was very delighted in this book, it is much more than a cookbook, and I love the stories and information in it too
One of those "must-have" books!.......2005-10-04
This book is packed with great recipes, but what makes it even more unique are the little narrative commentaries included with each recipe about the Amish way of life. I really love this book!

Book Description
Foxfire highlights the twentieth year of the Foxfire high school program with a new volume as fascinating as its predecessors. Included are general stores, the Jud Nelson wagon, a praying rock, a Catawban Indian potter, haint tales, quilting, home cures, and the log cabin revisited.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and timeless.......2003-08-05
I bought the book because it has one of the best sections on fire pit firing of homemade pottery that I have seen, complete with excellent photos, as well as step by step info and historical info. The section on Quilting - The Joy Of My Life - Auntie Arie Carpenter is extensive and even has templates you can copy and use for making your own quilts. There is also a wonderful section on the country store, which as I read it seemed to be a combination of pay with cash or goods, like eggs, crops etc. Very worth the expense and a book I will treasure.
Outstanding.......1999-05-23
The entire Fox Fire colledtion should be required reading for all people of this country. You would get a feel for where we came from and our heritage. The books show a deep respect for each other, God and country. Very good.

Parents Are Teachers.......2002-12-13
I highly recommend this easy-to-read, interactive parenting workbook to parents pulling their hair out, wondering how to achieve cooperation and not struggles between them and their kiddos. I have been using this book in a course I teach for families since it first came out in the '70's. The practical information and easy-to-implement suggestions contained in it are timeless. Although the strategies are entirely uselful for parents of any child, this book is particularly helpful for parents with children whose behavior is difficult to manage, whose children have language processing disorders, or other learning difficulties.
PARENTS ARE TEACHERS by Wesley C. Becker.......2001-02-11
This great little book has been designed to help parents learn to be more effective parents by becoming more effective teachers of their children. This proven program shows parents how to systematically use consequences to teach children in positive ways what children need to learn to become effective people.
Thanks to PARENTS ARE TEACHERS, my children and I benefitted from my improved parenting skills. Today, I am a family therapist and I always recommend this book as a MUST READ for all parents.
