    Book Description

"Home Was Never Like This" was written by Colonel Doyle R. Yardley, commander of the 509 Parachute Infantry Battalion - the first American parachute battalion to attack an enemy, making the longest airborne flight from Land's End England to the Invasion of French North Africa. Col. Yardley was captured during the Invasion of Italy and spent 16 months as a prisoner of war in Oflag 64 in Szubin, Poland.

Col. Yardley kept penciled entries of his experiences in England and as a POW, describing in details the events and the soldiers who were part of the war effort. He wrote "Home Was Never Like This" with the intention of publishing his memoirs after the war. Yardley escaped, leaving his journals buried behind in Oflag 64. They were miraculously returned to him after the war.

Unfortunately, shortly after his return to civilian life, Col. Yardley died. His diaries were kept in a forgotten footlocker until his nephew, Charles Turnbo, discovered them on the family farm. Charles dedicated his efforts to publishing "Home Was Never Like This" in memory of his uncle, all the soldiers of the 509, and those who served our country during WWII.

"Home Was Never Like This" is a heart-wrenching and often humorous look into his life and the lives of the hundreds of others involved in or effected by the war.

Dr. Peters lays down the law25 of them to be exactin this no-nonsense playbook for keeping (or restoring) order in your home. With nearly three decades of family counseling experience to draw upon, Dr. Peters has seen it allfrom unruly kids to out-of-control teens. She shares real stories that demonstrate the profound, positive effects that her methods have had in families across America. Her firm but entertaining approach addresses parents most important problems and their most common mistakes, showing them how to set and enforce loving laws of discipline and respect.Dr. Peters gives parents the tools to prioritize and enforce the rules and values that are most important to them. The laws give parents permission to parent by encouraging them to trust their judgmentand act decisively. For parents who fall into patterns of futile nagging without results, Dr. Peters explains the need for, and her proven method to enforce, catastrophic consequences when the code of values is violated. The bottom line is a better-behaved, better-adjusted kid. With shelves full of bland parenting guidebooks to choose from, parents and caregivers alike will find Dr. Peterss national reputation, no-nonsense attitude, and home-tested, results-oriented advice both refreshing and reassuring.

5 out of 5 stars A must -have for parents.......2007-02-11

"Laying Down the Law" does not seem to be too popular with parents these days. Makes you wonder why they're mystified when their children go awry. This book is a wonderful tool that educates and helps you be the parent your child needs.

3 out of 5 stars Little detail yet full of common sense.......2005-11-05

This book is somewhat disappointing to me. It is well organized, concise, to the point, and useful as a book to keep parents on the right track.

However, I found it to be lacking in real details about certain issues with kids. It also is not a real gripping read; I found myself skimming the chapter more than obsorbing what they really said. It would have been more helpful to me if it had greater detail and methods for dealing with kid issues like discipline and the middle school ages.

I recommend books by John Rosemond that give me a little more substance than this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for raising polite and responsive children!.......2004-07-10

I got this book off my local bookstore shelf and drove right in. I have one daughter of my own and 2 step children. The Step kids have NOT had ANY discipline from their birth mother and were disrupting my calm and structured household. My main concern was that these kids behaviors would be taught to my well mannered and polite daughter. I had to do something and FAST! These children had no concept of earning their privilidges or listening skills and my new husband and I were going NUTS! I went to the book store for help and this book was a GOD sent! It is not for the timid or people without a backbone. You must be able to Lay down the law and follow through will all consequences "with teeth" every time. Kids need consistenancy and rules. Ms. Peters outlines how to do this and how to get the kids moving and moving NOW, with timers and teaching kids the work ethic and rewards for choosing good behavior. I recommend this book to all parents who have the ability to really take a hard look at themselves and are ready to make some difficult changes in their own behavior for the benefit of thier children. Read it - it's excellent!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book about child rearing.......2003-09-07

Everything that Dr. Peters says in this book appears to be common sense, yet I know very few people that actually act like this. She lays down a very simple framework about what our children should and shouldn't do, and it is an extremely helpful guide.

The format is very straightforward. The beginning of each chapter spells out what the law is. She adds a "real life"story about inappropriate behavior, and she follows up with how you can truly get good behavior again.

As a busy mother, I found the book easy to get through, and not too clinical.

The only thing I didn't like was some parts of her chapter on bullying. Some of her ways to stop the child from being bullied seemed to be a bit off target. Otherwise, this is a great book on parenting.

5 out of 5 stars Just the facts, ma'am.......2003-03-21

If you're looking for a "squeezy, feely" book about how to get your children to be "good people", this is not the book for you. But if you're having problems getting your children to do homework, clean their rooms, do chores, and generally behave, Dr. Peters has a lot of good advice for you.

Peters takes a real life approach to raising children. We have a society that rewards good behavior and punishes bad behavior. We get paid for work, we go to jail for breaking the laws. She proposes that we set up this same philosophy at home.

The main theme of the book is that a parent is a "benevolent dictator". No matter how much you want to be your children's friend, your job is to be their parent, to discipline them, to get them to do the right thing, even if they do not understand the philosophical reasons for doing this.

For example, education. She says that a child is not going to understand the value of an education versus being popular. They will, however, understand that they will receive rewards when they get good grades and be punished when they get bad grades.

And her ideas for rewards and punishments are very sound too. We have been using the "chip" system she suggests in the book and it is working splendidly. Children are rewarded for having a "good day" with poker chips that can be cashed in for money, clothing and electricity. Yes, television, video games and even radio time must be paid for. And punishment includes giving away prized possessions to homeless shelters and other children's programs. Yet, knowing that children do not always behave, there is leeway to misbehave "some" and still have a "good day."

This is the best child rearing book I have found in a long time, and I will keep it by my bedside for years to come.

                Book Description

Caitlin Flanagan, the hilarious and hotly disputed social critic, compares the rituals and experiences that shaped the fifties housewife with those that have forged the modern woman, and arrives at some surprising conclusions. In her signature prose -- bitingly funny and brutally honest -- Flanagan examines everything from the contemporary white wedding craze to the epidemic of undersexed marriages. Whether she is reporting on the mommy wars, the anti-clutter movement, or America's new nanny culture, her book reveals both the high cost women pay for devoting themselves to the people they love, and also the matchless rewards that come from such a sacrifice. Caitlin Flanagan began her magazine-writing career at the Atlantic Monthly in 2001 with a series of essays on modern family life that became an immediate sensation and the subject of an ongoing and heated national discussion. Now a staff writer for The New Yorker, her essays are passed from friend to friend, challenged and championed in the media, and often made the subject of book group discussions. With its insightful observations and trenchant conclusions, To Hell With All That will generate controversy and serious media attention while it also delights and enlightens readers across the country.

5 out of 5 stars Why feminism has trouble keeping many women in line.......2007-09-17

Caitlin Flanagan's book expresses for a lot of us women why feminism has little or no real appeal. One of feminism's biggest problems has been that of keeping wives and mothers out of the home and in the workplace where we are supposed to belong.

Way too many of us want to be home, and believe that there can be no better place for us. We want to provide a safe, loving environment for our husbands and children. We really do like the homemaking, mothering, helpmeet roles. We also believe that women caring for loved ones, making a house a home, and leaving behind good, decent, human, even godly children as a legacy is the way that it is supposed to be, no matter how feminists seek to shame us into leaving our calling.

                God bless,
                Donna L. Carlaw

5 out of 5 stars close encounters with death.......2007-05-26

to me this book is the product of a woman who has had two traumatic and difficult encounters with death at an early age. her mother died when the author was about 30 if I count correctly, and then she had breast cancer which she found out about on the two-year anniversary of her mother's death, and she was very ill and could have died. she required multiple surgeries and was only in her early 30's when this happened.

of course she is conflicted and confused. her life was almost cut short and her mother died relatively young, before she got a chance to see the author's professional success.

I see her conclusions as more tentative than other people see them. I also understand how hard it is to find meaning in life after experiences like this.

when I was 11 and then 12, I had a triple brush with death that was very difficult for me. I was attacked by a group of teenage boys and things got out of control to the point where I consider myself very fortunate not to have been killed. recently I read a study that said the murder rate for victims of these type assaults has been estimated at 20%.

a few months later, my mother who was 5 months pregnant had an awful stillbirth. she was in the hospital for 10 days with toxic shock. she could have died. the baby who was alive when she went into the hospital, died before birth.

these experiences of close encounters with death at an early age change people in ways that can be difficult to understand for those who have gone through them. also, not everyone reacts the same way.

some people take a simple but profound lesson, like "live life to the fullest." other people like me and this author, get introspective and confused. why am I here? should I be here? what is the meaning of life? why is it OK for me to be here when this other person (the baby in my case) isn't here? now what do I do with myself? where do I find meaning?

this is confusing. she is struggling to understand her mother who died young and she is struggling to understand herself.

at first when I read the reviews, I thought this was just another poorly edited book but now I believe it to be an honest portrayal of someone who has been through some stuff that is often quite confusing.

is she sometimes offensive? yes. I almost put the book down upon reading the first chapter on white weddings with the (to me) vulgar tie between a woman wearing a white dress and virginity. given that I was raped by multiple perpetrators at age 11, this was painful reading for me. I also noticed this discussion of women's "purity" and sexuality was done without context to child sexual assault, which affects both females and males, and also without an adequate discussion of male sexuality, in my opinion.

focusing too much on female sexuality without really looking at men, or assuming that it's OK for men to have sexual experience yet women not, hurts both men and women, imo. I think we all suffer from not looking at people as individuals but yet instead, accepting the sexual stereotypes for males while devoting a lot of air space to female beliefs and behavior, wherever you come down on your conclusions.

calling the link between virginity and the white dress vulgar was not invented by me. Miss Manners, quoted approvingly on other topics by the author, said that and I am stealing it.

that chapter upset me b/c my personal background made me feel "less" than one of the virgin brides she apparently approves of.

so I can see why this book is offensive to others including mothers with different views, and even people with different opinions about Martha Stewart.

I am still giving it 5 stars b/c what she says about death really resonates with me. I hope she gets closer to finding meaning in her own life and then writes a better book.

                she says this:

"When I was too sick to get out of bed, which was often, my husband took the children to school and to playdates and birthday parties. And when I couldn't walk from the car to the doctor's office, he carried me. And if that's a traditional marriage, I'll take it."

this may be or seem cliched but it is also very true. when I was in the most danger from the attack and later, from being suicidal due to a complete lack of feeling dignity or self-worth, it was the actions of other people that made a difference. people ignoring me or saying mean things when I was a child vs. a doctor being kind to me and saying something supportive now, or my husband telling me he loves me, etc....those are the things that matter in the end.

5 stars although I do agree that she made me wince in some areas. I also think that she is writing without awareness or concern of the pain she might cause others who are different from her.

but in the end, she is dealing with such tough issues so forthrightly that I couldn't bring myself to downgrade her for that.

                3 out of 5 stars A great book for a book group.......2007-04-20

There were many aspects of this book that frustrated and annoyed me, so why did I give it three stars? First, because I think Ms. Flanagan can write using sharp and precise prose. I really enjoyed the poignancy of her first chapter, in which she goes through the minutia of her mother's life. The chapter on over-scheduling our children also struck a chord with me. Overall, I felt that Flanagan was a bit confused over her identity as a mother and a homemaker even as she wrote this book, but her inner conflicts can translate into terrifically heated and passionate discussion opportunities for a woman's book club. If your club is relatively new, pick this book and see how much you can learn about your friends.

2 out of 5 stars To He** with this Book...What an Irksome Read.......2007-01-19

The description on Amazon says that "Flanagan's take on why modern mothers are conflicted about their roles is witty and well researched." I can't say that I agree...I'd say that Flannagan's take on why modern mothers are conflicted is, well...conflicted itself. For me, the title: To Hell With All that: Loving and Loathing Our Inner Housewife was about the most interesting and exciting thing about Flannagan's book. It serves to draw you in and makes you think you are in for something different and interesting, sadly this feeling doesn't extend beyond the title page. Hell With All that: Loving and Loathing Our Inner Housewife is ten chapters of loosely related information that sounds promising, but never pay off. They ramble along allowing a glimpse into Flanagan's very pampered and privileged version of stay-at-home motherhood that left me shaking my head and wondering what the heck was the point she really wanted to make here.

Originally she quit her teaching gig to write a novel, and when she couldn't successfully do that she decided to have kids instead. The premise here seems to be that since she was failing at writing a novel and couldn't bring herself to just go back to teaching, she'd have kids because that would give her an "excuse" to not have to worry about the novel or deal with the feelings that failure held for her...it'd be OK if she found some measure of success as a parent. She might not have turned out a novel, but she DID squeeze out a kid...the logic is unfathomable. In reading the first few chapters, I didn't get the feeling that she wanted to be a mother, I got the sense that being a mother was a means to the end of continuing to stay at home...an excuse not to go back to work or find something else more meaningful to do with her time. Not all mothers (I might even say MOST) come to the decision to have children like this...it's either planned or it just happens...we don't think to ourselves...hmmmmmmm, I'm bored with my job or I've not been successful enough at what I really wanted to do and rather than admit that and find something else to do with my life, I think I'll have a kid and let my husband support me so I can continue stay at home. Can you tell I was irritated by this book?!

Additionally, she says in several places in the book that she doesn't believe that there is a "better" when it comes to being a stay-at-home mom or a working mother, but the entire book seems to be a pat on the back for her decision to stay at home with her kids, but not REALLY stay at home with them...she's got a nanny to do the boring, menial part of parenting, a maid, a gardener, and even an organizer by the end of the book...she's not really raising those kids herself, she's got an entire support staff (and bully for those who can afford it or know they need it and thus use it)...but I don't feel it's right to pat yourself on the back for being a stay-at-home mom while you spend about as much time with your kids as most working parents do.

I was less than half way through the book when I began to realize that this book wasn't making a point, it was just another well-to-do white woman bemoaning how hard it is to be a wife and mother (either of the working or stay-at-home variety) while going on and on about her nanny, her maid and her organizer and how hard it is to organize the little tikes schedule of activities while still maintaining a sense of self...not all of us can afford those expensive classes and extracurricular activities for our kids. On the one hand she bemoans over scheduling kids but does it herself...she says for her staying at home with the kids is the best choice, but once she's published she spends time mocking other stay-at-home moms with two working mothers (the cool girls of the motherhood world, whom she desperately wanted to be "in" with)...basically she wanted the best of both worlds and luckily for her, her husband (who is rarely mentioned in the book outside of being the provider and wallet in the Flannagan family) can afford to make this a reality for her, so she never has to make those touch choices that most of the rest of us HAVE to make.

Overall, I felt that each chapter would have made a fine stand alone essay without the inclusion of all the personal information and what she perceived as the difficulties of motherhood. Taken as a whole, this book never make a point and I found it to be personally irksome to read, Hell With All that: Loving and Loathing Our Inner Housewife is a jumble of individual points and rambling personal exposition that never coalesces into a cohesive or satisfying whole. I wound up giving it two stars...I just couldn't see my way to three stars. Sure it was humorous and interesting for what it is, but it doesn't really go very far in making a cohesive point about why modern mothers are conflicted about their roles, it's clear that Flannagan IS conflicted herself and is unable to discern WHY that is exactly. In the end, I was more annoyed than entertained or informed.

3 out of 5 stars Funny? Yes! Morally Vacuous? Yes!.......2006-12-10

Flanagan is often very astute and witty in her observations (why do women in their 40's wear white to their weddings?). She is also often touching in her depictions of her mother and her children. She is such a "social climber" though, that she comes across as a morally vacuous person. Ok, so her father was a college professor, her first husband was from "money" (whatever that means, but it was intimidating for her), and her latest husband is an executive at a toy company. So what? She writes as if she was a member of the landed gentry, and it comes across as crass and grasping. She's so unsure of herself - her intellectual ability, her parenting, her role as a wife, her "relationship" with the nanny. Her "voice" ultimately sounds like that of a clever teenager.

                              Book Description

This is a densely detailed, compelling account of the infamous Kennedy dynasty - with a new understanding of how the Irish Catholic immigrant experience shaped every aspect of their lives. Meticulously researched both in the U.S. and abroad, the book examines the Kennedys as exemplars of the Irish Catholic experience. Author Thomas Maier begins with Patrick Kennedy's arrival in Boston in 1848, then delves into the deeper currents of the Kennedy story and the ways in which their immigrant background shaped their values - and, in turn, 20th-century America - for over five generations. As the first and only Roman Catholic ever elected to a high national office in America, John F. Kennedy ran for president in keeping with the family's tradition of navigating the cultural divide that began in Boston's Irish ward and ended in a tragedy from which the country continues to suffer. Reader Alan Sklar brings his seasoned skills to this moving story of America's first dynasty.

3 out of 5 stars I was enjoying this, until..........2007-05-05

...the author began to write about the latter-day Kennedys: old Ted Kennedy, his nephews, his nieces. Then, it seems all the careful research and non-biased authorship went out the window. I can only suppose, maybe because Ted is still alive and could have played hardball with the materials granted to the author, the author decides to give him a pass. How can you write a book about the Kennedy family and not discuss Chappaquidick's ramifications?

But until that point, the book is excellent; plenty of actual letters from Rose, Joe, young Joe, Kathleen, Jack et al., are quoted (letters which reveal so much more of their feelings and their characters, rather than just an author stating an opinion about them -- this is great). The trauma that Jacqueline Kennedy endured after the assassination is finally explored in detail. Really, this part of the book is stunning, particularly in regard to what the Kennedys' faith meant to them (particularly Rose) and how it was practiced -- UNTIL the chapters regarding Teddy and the latter-day Kennedys. Then, I get the distinct feeling that the author is indicating it's OK that most of the latter-day members of the family have become the new "pick & choose" Catholics of today -- the type of so-called believers that want to manipulate and practice this faith THEIR way, not their Church's, way. In other words, if a Catholic belief doesn't suit their life choice, they know to make a slick excuse about the choices they make or the political positions they assume. For instance, Ted becomes pro-choice since about 1972 (but never before) --ironically, just when women really started speaking out and became a political force on this issue, and just about the time of Roe v. Wade. Was it really a belief in women's rights that changed him, or was it just a convenient time to sway the way the political wind was blowing?

I can't quarrel with the quality of the writing, or the research, so this book deserves 3 solid stars. Maybe some of my disappointment in the book is with the current Kennedy family itself (and, in respect to the book, the author's failure to point out how the family has lost its way). It is disappointing, seeing the younger generation's campaigns, marriages and even some lives going bust, due to drugs, embarrassing scandals & so forth; seeing how the Catholic values have been degraded, when compared to the stringent yet strong inner core that Rose Kennedy, Eunice, and I think even JFK (despite all his affairs), had.

Most of the younger generation (and Ted, too) seem to lack this core of strength and determination to achieve things not just for their own good but for the good of others, which I believe, for the most part, came from their Catholic faith. The author does a great job showing what the old faith as practiced by the Kennedys meant to them and how it informed the older generation's lives, but fails to point out that its loss and/or its current application as a sort of "only at my convenience" religion has left its mark on the current generation.

5 out of 5 stars Another Side of This Family.......2004-02-12

Professor Maier has documented a side of the Kennedys that many readers are quite unfamiliar with: their ongoing commitment to their religious heritage. As Maier writes, Americans are more comfortable with Kennedy's as power operators and libertines. The essential Catholic nature of these men and women, however, either bores us or makes us uncomfortable. Some liberals don't appreciate the Kennedys as Catholics because they dislike Catholicism itself. Many conservatives deny that the Kennedy's are Catholic because, for such critics, morality means sexual prudery. Maier is able to strike the proper balance in portraying Joseph, Sr., John F. Kennedy and Edward as committed, believing albeit flawed Catholics. Robert is correctly drawn as the most conventionally devout of the Kennedy males. This should not be a revelation to readers, but in a sense, it is. And the author makes one more very important and routinely ignored point: It is very significant that Americans have been unwilling to nominate (let alone elect) a Roman Catholic to the Presidency since John F. Kennedy, over 40 years ago. This work ranks as one of the best, most carefully-documented and readable of the hundreds of books published about this family.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Informative and Not a Rehash.......2004-02-10

While this is an excellent history of the Kennedy family, tracing its roots like few histories have done, this book is far more. The author neither shows a bias to adore this large, well-known clan nor does he show a disdain for them. He simply tells the story as it is and leaves the reader to his own conclusions.

The main thrust of the book is the family's dealings with the Catholic church. We learn what many have suspected, that the Kennedy family paid off the churches leaders, providing them with much personal and institutional wealth, for the benefit of various Kennedy family members --- for special treatment and services.

The book covers just about all family members who were helped by the Catholic hierarchy but, of course, it spends more time on JFK who benefited from payments made by his father on his behalf. But it goes on to the more recent affairs including marriage annulments of lesser family members.

While this clan is of much less importance than it once was --- indeed it is of little importance --- this history and the new revelations add a good deal of knowledge for the student of politics and religion and leaves us with a distaste and distrust of both.
