funny, sentimental, memories of growing up in south Texas.......1998-12-08
"I Can Hear the Cowbells Ring" contains funny, sentimental, memories of growing up in south Texas...and no matter when the reader is from, it is just the type of book that causes one's own memories of childhood--the poignantly happy, as well as the sad--to resurface as reminders of how nice it all really was. Lionel Garcia's shared experiences are worth remembering, from the obnoxious version of baseball to spinning the grandest tale for the town priest, each chapter is a joy to read.

Puberty, divorce, drugs, masturbation, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are all waiting to ambush the unsuspecting parent in a midchild crisis, and each one is thoroughly addressed in this encyclopedic tour of the years between infancy and adolescence. In fact, the chapters that cover traditional medical problems--ear infections, stomach aches, hives, broken bones--are in the minority. Most of the clear, simple writing is devoted to social matters and the psychology of parenting. What should you do if your child is being bullied? Is it OK for a child to attend a funeral at this age? How do you control temper tantrums? Does it help to repeat a grade if your child isn't doing well in school?
The second in a three-volume series, this revised and updated guide culls advice from more than 60 pediatric specialists. As a result, it assumes a middle-of-the-road stance meant for the average parent. For detailed information about complex topics, such as learning disabilities and chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes, parents may need to search for more specialized titles. But as a first reference and general guide, this book fills the parenting advice void in the middle years with a reassuring voice. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

AN IMPORTANT RESOURCE FOR ALL PARENTS!.......2007-09-02
As a board-certified pediatrician, I must say that this book is another "must have" from the American Academy of Pediatrics. This book is comprehensive and easy to follow for parents. Read this resource with confidence. AVOIDING THE 15 BIGGEST MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE: A PEDIATRICIAN'S PERSPECTIVE
Our Instruction Manual.......2007-03-26
We use both this book and the one for younger ages (Caring for your baby and young child). I consider both books the gold standard for child care. The emergency sections are particularly good. I have never seen so many childhood illnesses and diseases in one place. In a word, excellent.
AAP Caring for your School Aged Child.......2007-01-11
I was disappointed because the earlier book (Birth to Age 5) had a wealth of Medical Information. This book deals mainly with emotional, developmental and social issues. If you are looking for medical information and guidance when your child is sick, this is not the book.
Great Book.......2006-03-13
Every parent should have this book. It covers everything you can think of. The one for birth to age 5 is excellent too. It gives you the facts, pros and cons for every situation. Totally helpful.
Great Book - Just what I wanted! .......2005-02-18
This book picks up just where the 0-5 book leaves off. I wanted this book for topics about talking to my kids about sex, emotional and behavioral issues and this book meets those needs plus many many more. It still touches on the most common illnesses and injuries (though someone below says it doesn't). Great book. If you liked the 0-5 one you will like this one as well!

Little sweet bites.......2007-07-26
I love the concept of Petit Fours. I love eating Petit Fours. They are the perfect size for one to indulge their sweet tooth. I especially like this book because it has some nice and interesting variations as well the traditional petit fours. If you could have a sampling of a few different desserts, why would you want a big slice of cake?
petit four recipe makes a garden tile.......2005-04-20
I got this book to make petit fours. The recipe is the pits. The genoise came out like a garden tile. I tired it twice.
just what i was looking for.......2003-07-08
I found this book while looking for recipes for tea parties. Not only does this book have a great variety of recipes that I haven't found in standard cook books, it also has wonderful pictures.
Great introduction to chocolates and *sweet* petits fours........2003-04-14
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Chocolates and Petits Fours, presents recipe suggestions for all different types of these tiny dessert cookies and truffles, from chocolates and truffles to confections, cookies, wafers, tarts, cream puffs and meringues. (NOTE: While the term "petits fours" is now also used more and more frequently in connection with the kind of small salty snacks that is often served at parties, traditionally petits fours were sweets served at the end of a meal, or with tea or coffee. Only these are described in this book - but of course, in that context, a snack doesn't only qualify as a petit four if it actually happens to have that name.) Classics such as assorted truffles, fudges and pralines, almond orange bread, almond tarts, butter fingers, chocolate coated fruit, coconut macaroons, eclairs, Florentines, fruit cakes, marzipan, rum balls, strawberries dipped in brown and white chocolate, and Viennese almond crescents appear next to unique treats such as Christmas truffles, honey nut fruit balls and lattice jam cookies.
You won't find any salty party snacks here - but from almond and prune truffles to walnut coffee creams and white truffles, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of finishing a meal on a sweet note, or serving little treats with your afternoon coffee or tea. Also recommended: this series' installments on ice creams and sorbets, cookies, preserves, and afternoon tea.
Easy and concise!.......2003-02-14
I've never made chocolates before. But this little book, with beautiful photographs, and easy-to-find ingredient lists, shows the way to creating exquisite works of chocolate art! I would suggest these for cocktail parties, weddings, holidays, or teas....or making your own gifts!
I truly believe anyone could do this - no special craft/skills needed! And get this: you wont have to bore your family or friends with the same old christmas cookie recipes anymore! equally good for Channukah - or Kwanzaa! Or Yule!
I think it would be easy to adapt some of the recipes to your own tastes as well.

Year by year information list.......2007-05-17
This book offers year-by-year information of the mintage, auction, ms population information. Some useful information, but not that useful. You can find most of these info online. Just a collection of basic info.
Morgan Silver Dollar Bible ?.......2007-03-18
If you think your a Morgan Silver Dollar collector and you don't have this book then your NOT a Morgan Silver Dollar collector. Much more than just a book on Morgans, this is a true reference piece that you will refer to again and again. A bible of Morgan Silver Dollars if you will. I find myself refering back to this book not only for new information but also to verify details I have found elsewhere.
Very well written, very comprehensive, very well organized. A natural flow through to the book from the history of dollars to a detailed analysis of each date and mint. Highly recommended.
A Very Thorough and Well-Organized Guidebook.......2007-03-12
An excellent publication in terms of breadth of coverage from both a historical and a collector's standpoint. With the help of this book, one could almost become an instant expert in the field. As for myself, however, I'm content to have learned enough to establish reasonable goals (in terms of condition, availability and cost) for date & mint selections when acquiring companion pieces for my 1884-CC Morgon Silver Dollar.

This caring and knowledgeable guide can
help you feel betterstarting now
Fibromyalgia causes muscle stiffness and pain, debilitating fatigue, and numerous other symptoms. Most frustrating of all, people with fibromyalgia syndrome don't look sick; standard tests for injury or chemical imbalances often show nothing wrong. But if you suffer from fibromyalgia, you know that your disease is real, and so is your pain. It's natural to feel discouragedbut don't give up! In Fibromyalgia: Simple Relief through Movement, Stacie L. Bigelowa motivational health counselor and FMS sufferer herselfgives hope to everyone with fibromyalgia with a simple program designed to help you benefit from the one thing that is known to help: movement.
"The most important key to managing muscles affected by fibromyalgia," writes Bigelow, "is to keep them moving." Drawing on new medical understanding of fibromyalgia as well as her patients' and her own experiences, she explains what the disease is and how to implement an effective plan. She shows you:
- Why traditional exercise programs are not for you
- Which activities will reduce your painand which might increase it
- How to balance your daily needs for healing rest and movement
- How (and whether) to use muscle conditioning to decrease pain
- How to stretch properly to reduce pain
- How to communicate your needs to family members, coworkers, and health care providers
Presenting clear and specific advice on how to use movement safely and effectively to ease the pain of fibromyalgia, this caring, knowledgeable guide will give you an optimistic new mind-set about your pain, your body, and your future.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing I don't know about already........2005-09-23
This book was not helpful at all to me. I basically have a good working knowledge about fibromyalgia and this book offered no new helpful advice; in fact, it seems to be very outdated. The author basically speaks about her own actual experience. I would try another book rather than this one, probably a book written in 2005.
Simple Relief is just that, simple.......2003-03-19
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about a year and a half ago and have read everything I can get my hands on. With as debilitating as this syndrome is, I refuse to let it stop me and after almost a year of medication decided that I dont want to spend the rest of my life medicated. So, I have opted to treat my FMS by eating healthy, exercising and other alternative treatments (like acupunture). I bought this book thinking it would provide me with some additional guidances about exercise and movement. For me, the book was too simple. I already know everything it suggests. However, I do think that it could be something positive for those who are not moving or for loved ones of FMS sufferers, like my boyfriend who found the book quite informative.
The Best!.......2002-07-05
I was concerned based on the review below that this book would disappoint me, but every concern vanished after reading it. Ms. Bigelow is motivating about movement, but does advocate rest. She does describe FMS as a neuro-endocrine suggestion and there are photographs of stretches, along with very specific exercise recommendations. A trustworthy, useful, refreshing reference!
perpetuating the myth.......2002-06-11
This book is one of the worst "self-help" books I have ever read concerning fibromyalgia. I was very dissapointed, hoping to find desciptions of specific exercises and stretches that would help ease the pain of fibromyalgia. Instead I find a book that perpetuates the myth that all fibromyalgia sufferers are simply lazy. This book suggests that all of us in pain need only to get off our lazy rear-ends, take our antidepressants, and that will cure us. It is a dangerously simplistic book that advises that the best perscription for fibro patients is to stay on your feet all day, on the move, and take your Dr.s prescribed antidepressants to help you sleep at night. The obsesrvations in this book are incredably shallow and simple-minded, comparing muscles to cement that will become set and hard if they sit still too long, and completely ignoring the new research that descibes fibromyalgia as a neurohormonal disorder, an exaggerated response of the CNS. I feel very sorry for people with fibromyalgia who actually believe this nonsense, try their best to follow the instructions and then feel inadequate when they don't experience the desired results. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! Instead get:"Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Survival Manual" By Devin Starlanyl, M.D. and Mary Ellen Copeland, M.S.,M.A., and "Alternative Treatments for Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" by Mari Skelly and Andrea Holm. These books will give you information that is useful and pertinant. Thanks to the folks at Amazon for making this information exchange possible. Good luck to all of you people in pain, I hope you find something to help!
I was so glad to find this book!.......2001-05-14
After being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, and then told I wasn't allowed to exercise, my body has become stiff and its even hard to bend over to pick something off the floor. I'm excited to see how this will help me - each of the stretches focuses on areas that are specifically difficult to move after the pain has set in.

Needs a lot more filling in to be useful.......2007-03-23
This book serves as a guide for the men who fought in Central America from the 1880's through the great depression. It recounts their exploits but really does not get into their motives. Simply calling them soldiers of fortune does not make sense when their exploits are explored in detail. I think this book has value as a starting guide except for the fact that it requires a lot of knowledge on the history to begin with. The author's attempts at trying to determine which groups were responsible for which raids leave a large scholarly gap to be filled. This books value is limited and really should only be used as a quick review of what happened.
Central American soap opera.......2006-11-14
One of the least appreciated fields of American foreign policy is the role American mercenaries, entrepeneurs and government officials played in the Central American isthmus prior to WWII. The highlight of this time and place is the Panama Canal of course; but there is an entire history separate from Panama that occurred just to the north in the countries of Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatamela and El Salvador. This book focuses on the history of these countries in the time frame of 1880 - 1930. Why this time? The answer is that during this time, this area moved out of the influence of Europe and Europeans, and passed under the influence of the USA. It is during this time that the phrase "Banana Republic" becomes common as the events in these countries were driven by the banana industry or those involved in it.
The book gives equal attention to both local actors such as Bonilla, Manuel, and Castro (not Fidel), and those from the USA such as Lee Christmas, Guy Molony, and of course higher ups in the White House such as Taft, Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. The emphasis is on events in the isthmus itself, and many pages detail the battles and machinations of local officials.
The story painted in this book follows the general outline. First, whites discover the feasibility of banana production en masse within Central America. Second, whites from Europe and America move in to make money of the banana business. In doing so, they run into locals and the rivalries that dominate local politics, and are inexplicably drawn in. Washington occasionaly tries to force peace with ironclad warships of the coastal cities and battalions of marines and bluejackets. But this only works as long as the soldiers and ships are present, which is some of the time. The rest of the time alternates between civil wars within countries, and wars between the various isthmus countries. After the first chapter, one comes to realize that this represents one long soap opera. The concept of "dividing the spoils" rarely occurs and everyone fights to win it all.
The book is not long, but is quite tedious to read. Instead of focusing on several key events, the authors frame the book as one long timeline where each event is given 1 - 2 pages. As such, the list of characters, places, and events quickly becomes too much to remember and one page blends into the next. The book includes several pictures in the middle; these should have been included after each chapter to break the text and aid the reader in understanding what is being told. All in all, an interesting subject but not that good a book. There are probably better works to read to learn about this subject.
Interesting and well researched account of revolution.......1999-05-07
I found this to be an excellent rendition of some rather brutal and violent events. The cast of characters could fill a dozen novels, but they were all real people. The corruption, the revolutions, the mercenaries, the battles the the battles are all detailed in a readable style.
A Great Book.......1998-11-18
This is a wonderful read. Vivid accounts of mercenaries and capitalists and their deeds in the early part of the century. The research put into this book is impressive. They provide little known facts about the individuals central to the travesty brought by American involvement. The lives of Lee Christmas, Samuel Zemurray and others from the period are fascinating. Their stories deserved to be told and this book has done a great job of doing so.
Oh, My Kingdom for a Time Machine.......1998-11-07
A wonderful book about a fascinating time in history. Lee Christmas, Sam Zemurray and all the other characters from the era are rescued from undeserved obscurity. Information not found elsewhere made this a worthwhile read. Having lived in La Ceiba, Honduras and Guatemala, this book brought back the smells and taste of tropical America. For anybody interested in the virtually unknown escapades of soldiers of fortune and crazy capitalists, this is the book for you. If anyone knows of similar books that can be purchased, please e-mail me. I have some, but the early publication dates and lack of market for republications makes it difficult to find classics by Beals, Batson and Cunningham among others.
Book Description
The architectural designs of Batty Langley greatly influenced England's Gothic Revival movement in the second half of the 18th century. This volume, which completely reproduces the author's most famous and influential work, displays columns, entablatures, windows, mantels, pavilions, and a host of other architectural features.

Book Description
Langley (VA), home of the CIA, owes its name, by many twists and turns, to Thomas Langley, England's first foreign secretary, friend of Chaucer, and one of the most unscrupulous politicians in English history. This is the first ever biography of a fascinating man. Ian Sharman traces his career from his birth as the fourth son of a farmer, through his early life as John of Gaunt's private secretary, to his ascendancy as Chancellor to three English kings. As Professor Colin Richmond writes "Thomas Langely was not just 'at the hub', he was the hub. Langley was not simply good, he was the best there was. And Ian Sharman has done him proud".
