This is pretty cool!.......2001-08-31
I think that it's cool that Dr. Massey is one of my professors! I'm at Freed-Hardeman University in West Tennessee and we're a pretty small school, so it's neat to have a professor who's published!
The *True* Patriot.......2000-07-19
Those caught up in the hype of the movie *The Patriot* will be eager to read this extensively researched and captivating narrative of a true patriot from South Carolina during the American Revolution. Massey brings John Laurens to life in this superb biography of a planter's son-become-military-hero who believed in giving slaves who fought for the American cause their freedom.

LIBRARY JOURNAL.......1999-10-29
Like many men confronted with a diagnosis of prostate cancer (Pca.), Dr. Fine, a radiologist writes, "I've read so much medical information my head is spinning... still can't decide which treatment to choose." Both Dr. Fine and his wife kept a journal of their quest for the right cure for them. Their book - consisting of their alternating, frighteningly personal diary entries and transcriptions of taped medical consultations - records their reasons for eventually choosing brachytherapy (in which radioactive pellets are implanted directly into the tumor). This book is valuable because few men with Pca will be able to tap into the healthcare network and scholarship as capably as the Fines have. Offering a uniquely expert point of view and a wealth of detailed information, it will be a wonderful guidebook for the less-advantaged Pca patient. Recommended for academic and public libraries alike. -- James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. Lib., New York

Customer Reviews:
Excellent - comforting and realistic.......2007-10-04
This book provides an excellent way to brooch the subject of divorce with little ones. It is told through the eyes of a little bear, who has a big sister, a Mama and a Daddy. She loves them all and she loves her little rabbit and her red sandles. When she hears about the divorce she is sad, but learns that the people, activities and things she loves are still there, even if they happen in different places now that Daddy has moved out
My children are five, three and zero, and the little bear in this tale seems about three, so it is very appropriate. I am going to make sure I read this story to them lots as Daddy moves out this weekend. Already they seem easier with the idea of separation (even if they don't like it that Daddy's taking the TV!)
This book is very valuable and very comforting to the children. I cannot recommend it too highly
A very helpful tool.......2007-01-09
This book is perfect for the age group stated (pre-K, K). It doesn't go into details of what divorce is, but rather it acknowledges that something sad and a little scary has happened and that things have changed. It addresses the fears that come along with divorce for little kids: anxiety, abandonment, concern for the parent who is leaving, visitation and continuity. It does a great job of explaining that even though one parent no longer lives with you, they are still your mommy/daddy and will always love you. I also liked that it stressed that even though some things have changed, some things have remained the same; the little girl still gets to sleep with her favorite bunny no matter which house she's at, she can still wear her favorite shoes and she can still do the things she loves to do with each parent. It also briefly covers the fact that sometimes when Daddy was supposed to come pick them up on the weekends he couldn't, but was sure to come see them on a different day (acknowledging that visitation isn't always on a perfect schedule so expect some bumps, but rest assure daddy still loves you and wants to see you). It's a simple book but it gets the message across. I would have liked to have seen the children as a boy and a girl though instead of two girls so it might appeal to little boys and give them someone to identify with that is in their same situation.
Daddy is a deadbeat........2006-05-23
This book would be really wonderful for kids who are going through a divorce where their daddy is a louse. The book portrays the father as a deadbeat who doesn't bother to show up for visitations even though he only has them one night a week. What does this book say that a divorce is? "A divorce meant that Daddy would not live with Mama, Ruth, and Dinah anymore."
I know how impressionable kids are, how is this supposed to be an unbiassed view of divorce? In my mind this book is designed to taint the mind of impressionable children to make them wonder whether their daddy was going to treat them with the same carelessness as Daddy Bear. I would warn fathers who find themselves in a divorce to think carefully before allowing their children to read this book.
My Pre-Schooler has Memorized this Book.......2005-02-11
I originally bought this book for my three-year-old daughter but after we told our girls of the impending divorce, my eight-year-old daughter read it again and again. I think she liked it because it was simple enough for her to read on her own and she said it made her feel better. My three-year-old has also practically memorized the book. When I read it to her I insert her name and her sister's name for the names of the bears in the book. It has helped her to bring up very simple thoughts and questions regarding what will happen and how she will feel after her daddy moves away. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to others with small children.
quiets young children's fears.......2002-10-09
This is an exceptional book for young children whose family is going through a divorce. It has a nice "Note to Grownups" in the front which explains the age appropriate fears of preschooler, kindergartener ages. It helps quiet the child's main fears about loss of the people most important to the child. Routine and how the grownups handle things around this age group is so important for their needs to be met during such a stressful time. This book could be helpful at such times. I plan to use this book for some relatives, and do use it in my therapy practice. Youngsters I've worked with have asked to read this one again.

Book Description
Here at last is an origami book intended solely for the advanced paperfolder. Groundbreaking in concept and challenging in content, it presents sixty-five ingenious projects by respected masters working in a variety of themes and origami genres. From Toshikazu Kawasaki's Unique Iso-area
Folding Method to David Briil's remarkable "bottle" to Peter Engel's playful "kangaroo," the featured designs have been carefully chosen to test the refined sensibilities and stimulate the artistic appetites of the origami devotee.
If you are an accomplished paperfolder you will be inspired by the beauty and logic of the geometric form as discovered in such designs as Hourglass, Rotating Tetrahedon, Brain Ticklers, and Extraterrestrial Being. You will delight in the wit and poetry of representational origami as you create
delicate and winsome patterns for Kitten, Goose, Pelican, Giraffe, Camellia, Spiral Snail Shell, Ground Beetle, Pine Cone, Fox, and many more designs. What's more, you will find the key to successfully mastering numerous intricate techniques and complex paper fold...with ease!
This is no ordinary origami workbook. Complicated processes are made highly accessible-yet remain daring-through clear, concise instructions and highly detailed diagrams. One of the unexpected joys of the book is that its mentally invigorating text will serve as an ongoing inspiration to novel
approaches and new origami adventures - even after you have completed a project.
Customer Reviews:
Origami for Connoisseur.......2006-02-21
I collect Origami books. Each book has something new. This one does too but I mostly buy it for some of the known folds such as Kawasaki Rose.
A near perfect book on origami.......2005-07-01
The origami collected in the book is very interesing. Also the instruction is as detail as everyone-can-do. The only cons is the instruction is on the back of the paper you use for the origami, which means either you have to figure out a way to follow the instruction during the process, or you use other paper.
Can't put it down!.......2005-05-29
I have been reading this book and folding models every night since I bought it! It serves as a great introduction into some more advanced folding techniques. The models are very interesting and the directions are easy to follow. The book is structured like a reference book and easy to use. The pictures inside are 2 tone, but high quality.
A brilliant work of art!.......2005-05-19
I recently got this book for my birthday, and months from now, I'm still doing much of it. I've made nearly all of the models, and even did one of the 300 sonobe units modulars. I've tried the stegosaurus, and I'm starting to be able to clean new ones. Everything I do astounds my classmates in various classes.
Even though I've been told I'm crazy, I started the 900 unit sphere with a couple friends, and we have over 150 units put together.
This book has some models for beginners, but I'd say it's more for intermediate-advanced folders. The rose is defintely one to try, although it took me a couple tries just to get it. This is my current favorites origami book out of at least 10. A definite must-buy.
A very special origami book.......2005-05-15
This is one of the best origami books ever written. My all-time favourite model John Montroll's Goose which I have made hundreds of times is included, along with the wonderful and now classic Rose by Kawahata, David Brill's lidded box and transparent bottle, a series of twist folded cubes and many other beautiful and stylish paperfolds too numerous to list here.
The models are not for the complete beginner but will for the most part require some experience at intermediate level and the book is a good graduation point if you wish to move on to more advanced work.
The book has stood the test of time - the original edition was first published in Japanese in 1985 and then in English in 1987 - and is as fresh and exciting to read today as it was then. I cannot recommend this book too highly.

No Index!.......2001-08-11
An otherwise great little book (anything by Ken Druse is worth reading) is made frustrating by the lack of an index. Very frustrating in fact--although there is a general table of contents in the front, you can't look up anything specific or even be sure it is covered. Too bad!
80 Great Natural Shade Garden Plants.......2000-07-02
The book is smaller than Natural Shade Gardening, and more of a reference guide than coffee-table inspiration book. The pictures are still excellent and the information about each plant is detailed.

Book Description
What do two nice Jewish girls do when they want to start a family? They can marry two nice Jewish boys, or, if they happen to be lesbians, they can buy sperm online from California! Buying Dad is a hilarious, edgy, first--person chronicle of a year in the life of a woman engaged in a very alternative family-planning experience. Peeling back the layers of self-indulgence accumulated in 30-odd years as a self-proclaimed gay, childless, albeit happy neurotic, Harlyn Aizley takes the reader on one of the most personal, intimate and utterly female journeys any woman, gay or straight, can make-that of becoming a mother. Aizley's story begins with the search for sperm-known or unknown donor? Delivered on dry ice or in a nitrogen tank? The journey unfolds within the context of her relationship with her female partner, her mother's cancer diagnosis, the threat of her own possible infertility and finally pregnancy itself. Aizley's wry voice and candid prose embrace this confluence of major life events with the humor and wisdom that make Buying Dad accessible to any woman who ever considered ending a lifetime of sleep-filled nights and becoming a parent.
Harlyn Aizley's fiction and poetry have been seen in Cups, Caffeine, Inside, Dialogue and The South Carolina Review as well as the anthologies Love Shook My Heart, Scream When You Burn and Beginnings. Her nonfiction has appeared in Boston Magazine and the anthologies The Best American Neurotica and Mondo Barbie Redux. She is a graduate of Brandeis University and holds a master's degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. A native of New Jersey, she currently lives in the Boston area.
Customer Reviews:
Recomended for those contemplating insemination.......2007-03-01
I found the book fascinating, informative and cleverly written. I learned a lot from it and found that I wasn't alone in some of my pre-insemination craziness. There were even times when the book made me laugh out loud. While I found the book hard to put down, 3/4 of the way through it I got really tired of the author questioning the wisdon of lesbians getting pregnant. I felt like there was way too much internalized homophobia and I was just tired of it and wonder what the child will think when reading mom's book in the future. I also wish it didn't end so abruptly and spent more time on what would seemingly be the culmination of the book .. childbirth ... as well as the events with her mother surrounding the time of childbirth. Despite these two areas, I loved the book and highly recomend it.
Funny, insightful... and oddly practical. .......2006-08-11
The author is a Jewish, very well educated (Brandeis, Harvard) lesbian who lives in Boston. So it's written from a certain viewpoint-- but I didn't for a second think anything was "snide" or "snarky" as some other readers have commented. In fact, there is a LOT of self deprecating humor in here; the author is constantly worried about her own possible inadequacies--everything from genetic disorders that Jews might be carrying to her financial and social situation and her family issues. This book is almost kind of classic Jewish humor in some ways, which I liked, but I don't think you have to be Jewish to enjoy this book. (I'm not.) Also don't think you need to be gay to enjoy this book. I think almost anyone trying to get pregnant would enjoy this book, especially if you are trying to do it in a non-traditional way or in a non-traditional family situation.
The reason it's oddly practical is that I actually think I picked up some concrete details on the whole process, should I ever do this--how to choose a bank, costs, what to scrutinize in donor essays, how to screen doctors and clinics for mercenary motives, how clinics SHOULD be checking for ovulation and how they SHOULD be attempting inseminations. Because the author had some bad experiences with faulty donors and lousy clinics and goes into a lot of details about specific conversations, procedures she had, etc.
Snarky Funny.......2006-05-04
My partner and I bought this when we were starting to look at selecting a sperm donor, and were very disappointed in this book.
We thought the author came across as neurotic and with a lot of internalized homophobia. And not in a way where you thought, "Yes, but she's struggling to deal with it and there's some hope!"
Very great book!.......2003-11-27
I had this book on my shelf for a month before opening it - why did I wait so long? I agree with the other reviewers. This is a funny, moving, and yes, heartfelt book. Harlyn Aizley's voice is one I will never forget. Very poetic and humorous take on two of life's biggest and hardest adventures.
moving and wonderful.......2003-08-01
It's hard to imagine laughing about cancer and crying about sperm, but that's what I did while reading Buying Dad. Harlyn Aizley's insights and sharp wit made reading about two really difficult issues - cancer and infertility - a joy and a learning experience. A great book to pass on to a friend thinking of becoming a mom or to someone who is helping a loved one face cancer.
