This Book is about awareness.......1999-04-23
So That His Death Will Not Have Been In Vain is a serious book about a mother (the author) and her son who had serious hopes of becoming a naval officer, but he callasped while in basic training, and died several days later. What is most interesting about this book is that he was a carrier of the sickle cell trait, but was not aware of its impact. And what made it most interesting was that the navy wasn't aware of the effect being a carrier could have on one's physical body. Being aware could have saved the life of this promising young man. Many African Americans and decendants from the Mediterranian or apt to have the sickle cell disease or be carriers. This book is a lesson for parents and a lesson for the military. Why? because it serves as an awareness tool for those who are not familiar. For example, even being a carrier has its consequencies,i.e., heat factors as it relates to over heating in the sun while doing strenuous exercise, etc. If you have the trait in your family or know of family members who are carriers--this is an important book to read. It provides you with the basis of the Sickle Cell trait and what you should be aware that could mean the difference in life or death. The book is serious and provides you with serious information. The author has indeed done some serious research in helping us to understand the carrier of the sickle cell trait, and learning more about the death of her son.
Book Description
Your baby is yet to be born . . . but she's listening, learning, and aware of the outside world!
Traditionally, the world of an as-yet-unborn baby was thought to be an isolated and silent one. It was assumed that, asleep and growing in its mother's womb, the developing baby was incapable of experiencing sight, sound, thought, or emotion. In fact, the truth is very different, as bestselling author Nikki Bradford reveals here. Drawing on the latest research by leading authorities in the field, the author explains how the unborn baby's awareness of the outside world develops rapidly from very early in pregnancy.
Did you know that unborn babies respond to sound, and duck away from strong light, as early as 16 weeks? That they have been observed shying away from--and even attacking--an amniocentesis needle at around the same time? That babies follow moving light sources with their hands by 20 weeks? Or that they recognize music and nursery rhymes from 33 weeks?
The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby not only offers you unique insights into your child's remarkable mental and physical developments in the womb, but also provides wide-ranging information on pregnancy and childbirth. This information is featured in comprehensive sections on:
-
How babies grow, week-by-week: Stunning color photographs enable you to follow the physical development of your baby. Did you know that the first heartbeat can be detected at about five weeks, and that fingernails appear by ten weeks?
-
Your pregnancy and birth: Just how does the body cope with it all? Advice and information are provided on every stage of pregnancy.
-
What babies can do in the womb: The latest research findings about unborn babies' emotional awareness and learning abilities; the evidence of communication (and telepathy) between babies and mothers.
-
What unborn babies know: What babies hear, sense, experience, dream--and remember--about being born and being in the womb. Looks at babies' emotional development, including reactions to your various moods.
Nikki Bradford has written The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby in consultation with leading experts in the field: San Diego-based Dr. David B. Chamberlain, President of the International Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health, and arguably the world authority on prenatal psychology; Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain, past President of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom; and Dr. Sammy Lee, an acclaimed London-based consultant embryologist.

Great Book.......2006-03-23
I found this book to be very useful. A lot of great pics also. I would recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant.
Love this book!.......2005-11-25
I kept this book handy through two pregnancies and have lent it to many friends. The pics are awesome! The text is imformative. This and the what to expect books are all an expectant mom need on her night table.
A book that only New Age mothers will appreciate.......2004-11-24
This book reminded me of a Hallmark card. It's filled with pastel color-pencil drawings of floating babies, photos of couples in flowery outfits joyfully embracing each other and articles on topics like "What Your Baby Dreams About." If like your baby info with fuzzy pictures and without cold, hard facts or edgy, ironic humor, then this is the book for you. However, the book is hard to get through -- it kind of rambles along in an unfocused way. That said, an early section on fertilization, which offers great photos of sperms attacking (oops -- I mean, embracing) eggs, was highly entertaining, and almost made up for all the incoherent sections like "Games Your Unborn Baby Plays" and "Preparing Your Baby For Birth."
A conservative view.......2003-05-28
If you want to find great pictures of unborn babies, this book has them. However, I really disliked the pictures of all the bare moms and dads. There was a whole chapter (short) of pictures and drawings of nude couples. Also a lot of women in underwear. If I had known, I probably would not have ordered this book, now I'm trying to censor the whole thing, so I can show it to my husband and kids.
I would otherwise agree with the other reviews. Great baby pictures, lots of nifty little facts about baby development, how to have fun with your preborn baby, etc.
MotherTreeBirth.com Recommends!.......2002-11-26
Did you know that as early as 12 weeks old, your unborn baby has all the growing senses to know you--to hear the sound of your voice, to suck it's thumb, to be lulled to sleep by your loving rock, to play with you?
Our doulas have used this book to share with many clients how to understand, play with and love their babies right from the start. We believe parenting begins at conception, and this is a book that finally shows the science behind the intuition.
Blessings,
Book Description
Preparing a Passover seder for twenty? Or a Purim feast for six? Or making a kosher meal to impress the in-laws? Whether it’s grand-scale celebrating or a cozy simple at-home meal, cooking traditional Jewish fare is one of life’s great joys. Yet it doesn’t have to be.
With Jewish Cooking For Dummies, you’ll discover the fabulous combinations of tastes and ingredients essential to Jewish cuisine, the significance of certain foods (such as honey and carrots), the ins and outs of keeping kosher, how to shop and select foods, and, most of all, how a rich and ancient heritage is kept alive miraculously at every meal. - Become acquainted with the beans, pastas and grains, vegetables, dairy foods, and meats used in traditional recipes
- Maximize your efficiency when cleaning, slicing, and preparing vegetables
Not only will you explore the roots of Jewish cuisine, you’ll get a handle on the difference between the Ashkenazic and Sephardic cultures (and how the egg noodle and pita bread are just one glorious manifestation of their varying cuisines!). And with over 100 recipes to choose from, you’ll experience the rich and delicious world of the Jewish dining table, holiday by holiday:
- Rosh Hashanah—including Cinnamon Carrot Coins and Sweet Beet Salad with Orange
- Hanukkah—including Spicy Vegetable Latkes and Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

Save Your Money.......2007-06-06
A complete waste of $$$, very few recipes. The only knish recipe is for spinich. Talks about A meat blintz but no recipe.Only good if you want to learn how to keep A kosher kitchen.
Good Cookin'.......2001-08-19
If you've never had to make homemade Challah before (or you donýt even know what that is) and always wanted to learn how, this the book for you. Jewish Cooking for Dummies is the perfect book for the novice Jewish chef. It has recipes for every major holiday, and some not so major ones, with recipes for every day of the week. Faye Levy, who has previously written other books on Jewish cooking, delivers again with a well thought out book. There are tips for keeping kosher, for substitutions, for making things faster. It's everything you need if youýre just starting out in the Jewish kitchen or in a kitchen in general. The only real complaint I have is that the recipes are very basic and that there aren't enough to go around. Also, many to the recipes take longer to make than listed in the book, especially when you first start making them. You gradually improve, but plan a little bit of a cushion into your work time.
Excerpted from Fullerton News Tribune 3-29-01.......2001-04-20
From Faye Levy, internationally renowned cooking authority and author of over 20 cookbooks, comes "Jewish Cooking for Dummies" (IDG Books Worldwide, $19.99), everything you ever wanted to know about Jewish cooking, complete with cartoons, from the holidays to kashrut (kosher laws), with tips from her toolbelt on everything from peeling a tomato to quartering a whole chicken. Her motto: "Have fun and be confident." "Lots of people want to celebrate with Jewish food but don't know how," says Levy, "converts, nonJews married to Jews, even those who grew up Jewish but never had the traditional foods." The Passover section (subtitle: "What Happened When the Bread Didn't Rise") demystifies the complexity of preparing for the seder, offering such must-try recipes as Garlic Roast Lamb, Asparagus and Carrots with a tangy Lemon Dressing and her luscious Passover Pecan Chocolate Cake...Levy stresses that Jewish cuisine does not have to be high in fat and calories. "Check any health food catalogue and you'll notice how many of the foods are labeled organic and kosher."

Wonderful Information.......2007-07-30
This book has been a great tool in doing scrapbooking at home. Hope that others find it as useful.
For very beginners only.......2007-07-23
It is a beautiful book and a big book. However it is definitely for someone who has never scrapbooked and is just starting. I didn't get very inspired by the layouts that are a bit old school and I was already familiar with the techniques. If you're looking for a challenge, that's not the book for you, but if you are looking to get started with this fabulous hobby, definitely a complete book.
Good book for beginners.......2007-01-27
I have probably been scrapping too long?
This book didn't suit me at all. However, it's a very nice book - and I am sure it's perfect for someone who's not yet defined their own style.
Still - with these books, I tend to feel they are mostly a gathering of different ideas I've already seen in the magazines... So if you're subscribing to SS - you won't need it.
Scrapbooking Made Easy.......2007-01-23
This was a gift for my sister, a first time scrapbooker. Contains great ideas and a
must for those needing a guide that is really useful.
Kick-Started My Scrapbooking.......2006-05-18
I wanted to begin scrapping with a chronicle of our family vacation in a few weeks. But I didn't want to take a class. So, I bought this book, which is a wonderful compilation of articles from Simple Scrapbooks.
I couldn't have asked for better examples of the wonders of scrapbooking! It became clear right away that scrapbooking is not just putting pictures in a pretty and logical format. It's about recording memories, sharing who we and others we care about are, and chronicling the meaning of our lives.
The abundant examples of scrapbook pages show many techniques and layouts. But, more importantly, this book helps you solidify in your mind the things you want to say about those you love, in words and pictures. I'm happy to say I've already completed my first scrapbook page, on swimming lessons for my granddaughters in preparation for vacation. Next week: Mother's Day. I got some great shots!

This book is a dream for anyone who had longed for beautiful handwriting and how to execute it. Debra does a wonderful job of presenting numerous alphabets and even shows how simple little embellishments drawn all around your writing can be. It is the best money I've ever spent and it covers everything. Buy this book and you own't be disappointed. I'd rate it 8 stars but 5 is the highest rating.

This was the first lettering book that I've used and it was very easy to follow. It's a great tool, even for beginners!
CREATIVELY INSPIRATIONAL!!!!.......2004-09-26
Debra's creative abilities are very inspirational. Calligraphy and other creative lettering seems so intimidating until you delve into her easy techniques. I read this book cover to cover as soon as I received it! I buy lots of idea books and I have never gotten a lettering book with this much jam packed information! You get tons and tons of new alphabets and loads of scrapbooking, home decorating and crafting ideas. Debra is the Creative Lettering Queen!
Easy to use handlettering book.......2004-09-25
The tips and tricks were easy to follow. It makes lettering your own titles a snap! Saves you a TON of money on stickers, and computer font programs.
Best Lettering Book Ever!.......2004-09-25
When I got my copy of this fantastic book on hand lettering, I sat down and read it cover to cover. It is probably the best resource for hand lettering I have ever owned! I teach classes at a local scrapbook store, and with the author's permission, I have been teaching from her book. Her tried and true method is received with enthusiasm and excitement. The students cannot believe how hand lettering can be so easy! I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve their hand writing and hand lettering skills.

Scrapbooking Made Easy.......2001-06-14
This book is an excellent resource for both beginning scrapbookers and the more experienced. I especially found the discussions on color to be incredibly enlightening, and it will positively make a difference in my scrapbook pages yet to come!
A very good book for beginners.......2000-08-04
I am just getting started with making scrapbooks. I bought this book based on a review and I can't say I'm disappointed. It's easy to follow and includes plenty of color examples. Ms. Rinner covers topics such as organizing photos and events, design and layout concepts, journaling, freehand lettering, color enhancements, and more. I like most of all that she encourages the reader to find their own style - not simply copy other people's work. This book was the one I needed. It also happens to be a very good bargain.
An Intro to Scrapbooking.......2000-01-16
This is my first scrapbooking book. I bought it to learn how to draw the alphabet free hand for the cards I make with rubber stamps. Ms. Rinner shows several examples and explains how to do them. After reading throught the book and seeing how easy it is to scrapbook now I am going to try it. I didn't give it a 5 star because I don't have any other scrapbook books to compare it to.

This booklet outlines the steps to a perfect layout. It addresses things such as: "Choosing the Focus of a Layout" AND "Finishing with Important Details." It's a great booklet that helps you define your own scrapbooking personality. Great for experienced and beginning scrapbookers.
Customer Reviews:
Only for beginners.......2001-08-18
I was very disappointed in this book. I was expecting a book with lots of title ideas. What is really is, is a book with suggestions on layout of titles on the page. While this may be helpful if you are a beginner, anyone with any experience in scrapbooking will not find it very creative. I would never had purchased this book had I seen it "in the flesh" before buying.
Every good scrapbook story deserves a great beginning..........1999-05-23
To quote Jill Rinner, "Every good scrapbook story deserves a great beginning ..."
This booklet is one of my favorites. It gives lots of ideas about the importance of titles, places to find titles, and where to place your title on the scrapbooking page.
Jill does a great job appealing to both the experienced and beginning scrapbookers. I highly recommend this booklet.

Has a permanent place on my bookshelf.......2000-09-08
I've used this book for more than 20 years, starting as college student, and still use it regularly, for myself and as a good overall reference for others with a growing interest in marshes and wetlands. I agree it offers little on rarities, but I've never felt that this was its aim. There are other more specialized texts to help you with these. But for a good guide to take along on a field trip to learn about marshes and their plants, it's ideal.
Common Marsh, Underwater & Floating-leaved Plants of US & Ca.......2000-04-03
Hotchkiss has provided a practical, easy-to-use guide to identifying underwater and marsh plants to species level. This information is useful to wetland scientists, aquatic biologists, and others who need to accurately identify and characterize submerged plant communities. Line drawings are easy to read and distinctions between common species are clear. Drawbacks: incomplete when it comes to rarer species.

Fine for Pilates rookies.......2003-09-26
This book describes exercises that seem closer to Yoga than traditional Pilates. I practiced traditional Pilates for 10 months prior to becoming pregnant and the exercises described were a big step backward for me. If you are new to the principles of Pilates, this is a good place to learn the basics of the "Powerhouse". However, I haven't heard great things about the Winsor or Green/King books either. I'd suggest finding a certified Pilates instructor to guide you through Pilates during pregnancy if you want to get the maximum benefit. Traditional instructors can be found at www.pilates-studio.com. You may also find instructors in your area that are certified by Stott or Physical Mind Institute. Both of these alternate methods offer variations to what is termed "Authentic" Pilates.

2/3 Kennedy Family + 1/3 John Jr. = this book.......2000-01-08
I bought this book hoping to have a nice memory of a life extinguished in its prime. It wasn't long reading (I read the entire thing in under 2 hours) but it was brief, interesting reading. To my suprise, I discovered that this short book gives a tiny glimpse into the Kennedy family spanning back to John Jr.'s great-grandparents. I enjoyed the author's candid and blunt writing style. He certainly spared no feelings in writing this book, as you will see when reading about John Jr.'s mediocre accomplishments, Jackie's controlling maternal style, and the president's wanderings during marriage. The favoritism the family has enjoyed in the pursuit of different endeavors was especially riveting. (The interesting acquiring of the president's Pulitzer Prize, for example.) I would be untruthful, however, if I didn't admit that I did learn a lot from this book. If you don't want to devote days to a heavy biography on America's Royal Family, but are still interested in some behind the scenes escapades, then I would recommend it.
Prince Charming is much, much better.......1999-07-27
I read Prince Charming by Wendy Leigh and it is a fabulous beautiful book, a marvellous memorial to John. really worth getting. so don't waste your time with this book. Prince Charming tells the real story.

Book Description
(CLP's original blurb) The story of the Neville family is a fascinating one. From their inconspicuous beginnings in Lincolnshire after the Norman Conquest, by the fourteenth century the Nevilles of Raby were among the most influential groups in the north of England, virtually ruling the area by means of the royal offices they held, and their political power reached its zenith in the fifteenth century with Richard de Neville, earl of Warwick, the so-called Kingmaker. This new study aims to answer the question of how a family of knightly status but with no special prominence was able to rise to such heights, tracing its growth and development through a careful examination of surviving documents; it also illustrates how the governance of medieval England worked with the cooperation of baronial families in a pragmatic manner, quite apart from any abstract legal or constitutional principles.CHARLES R. YOUNGis Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University.
Customer Reviews:
First-rate dynastic study.......2005-07-31
Though they liked to claim in later centuries that the first Neville in England had been steward to William the Conqueror and had fought at Hastings, Domesday Book shows that Gilbert de Neville was actually a very small landholder in Lincolnshire in 1086. The family began its climb with the career of Alan de Neville, appointed justice of the forest by Henry II, a position in which he became somewhat notorious for his money-raising efforts on behalf of his king. He also sided with Henry against Thomas Beckett. Hugh Neville became chief forester under King John, to whom he was likewise loyal (most of the time) and for whom he likewise raised vast sums of money. Hugh was listed among those supporting the king in the preamble to Magna Carta. By this time, the Nevilles had established themselves in a number of counties and its members weren't always united as a family, but as a group their influence continued to grow. By the 14th century, the Nevilles were second only to the Percys in ruling the north of England, their power and influence culminating in Ralph de Neville, earl of Warwick, known as "the Kingmaker" for his shifting allegiance of one side or the other during the Wars of the Roses. This Ralph was the grandson of Ralph, lord of Raby and earl of Westmoreland, and Joan Beaufort, daughter of John of Gaunt, which gave him a connection to the throne himself. It all came to an end, though, at the Battle of Barnet in 1471, in which both the overmighty earl and his brother were killed and Edward IV was relieved of the Neville influence. Still, Ralph's aunt, Cicely Neville, was even Queen of England a decade later as the wife of Richard III. Young is more interested in the family's collective rise through royal service than in tracing exact lineages, which may frustrate genealogists, but this is a first-rate dynastic study and it includes an excellent bibliography.
