Book Description
With access to the private papers of the heroic Kitchener of Khartoum—victor of the Battle of Omdurman and avenger of the disastrously massacred General Gordon—this definitive biography, including 32 pages of black-and-white photographs, charts the illustrious, and sometimes infamous, career of the man who fought his last battles in the corridors of international power during World War I. It also finds beyond the formidable public figure a shy, reserved Christian man capable of great compassion and humanitarian vision. “An engaging narrative that brings the colorful, late-Victorian military and political world vividly to life.”—Kirkus Reviews “Pollock describes this amazing career with talent and passion. His book is well-written, lively, thoroughly researched....”—Financial Times

Eminent Victorian.......2006-03-28
K was a military guy with a big moustache and similar ego whose speciality was occasionally slaughtering thousands of locals in one of the many outposts of the outsize British Empire (Sudan, Egypt, India). His training as an engineer brought a new dimension to military thinking - the importance of logistics (surely only K could have thought it possible to build a railway in order to bring his army to the battlefield). In this he was a prototype for modern military commanders like Rommel and perhaps Patton. When many predicted at the beginning of WW1 that it would be over by Christmas, he said three years. He's a hard guy to read (or even like) but if you wish to know more about his professional career this book has it all.
shows the imperfection and the achievements.......2004-11-02
I read a review on here and chose not to read this book - boy how stupid I would have been and what I would have missed! I got this book and am beginning the final fourth: this is a comprehensive biography and a competent one. I'll say that again farther down, but this author has done a tremendous job with a remarkable life in an important time, a man at the center of many events and doings forming parts of our world and helping to define the 'our time' of those who came before us, which we inherited.
Firstly, this author devotes an entire appendix to the sexual question, and whether or not a reader agrees with the conclusions the issue is quite addressed.
Now that is remarked, time to move on: one does not have to be a detractor, busting the myths of good deeds of a life, to be a biographer, in fact most have some reason for writing on a person, often a fan or at least appreciating some things that personage did: this author has given us a very full and balanced account of a man who, while far less than perfect, gave what was needed during some difficult and climaxing British times: keen confidence and loyal leadership. K was most certainly not perfect, and Pollock shows how K made many mistakes, sometimes noticing the thing himself and regretting, and sometimes not noticing then hearing a friend point it out, then agreeing and regretting. He was great at deciding and issuing orders yet not remarkable at chatting, no manoeuvering manipulator here; not great at the rubbing elbows and chatting or curbing his tongue in subtle areas; his biggest problem came from errantly speaking his mind then finding himself used by a consumate and macchiavellian politician. K was no brilliant politician and made mistakes; but he came into his own in the Sudan command and knew how to run the India Army, or any army; he also made a huge difference in realizing what the first year of the great war would require and getting that going in the face of great opposition. The man did not lack personal and political courage.
But this author has done the main job of a biographer, showing how this man came to do the achievements and leadership he did at critical times by showing the personality's development and viewpoint: showing from where and how he came, and how those he knew and events he experienced affected and formed him to be the shy yet confident man he became, learning by trial and fire as he went, with flawed facets and yet a rare magnetism and decisiveness others required, enjoyed and benefited from. If I had been a colonel recalled from a field command to plan and slave for some senior potentate, I would have enjoyed doing it for K for the same reasons his staffs appreciated him and were loyal: he earned his colonelcy and his generalship by decisive plans and actions, loyalty to friends and fellows, and a keen mind properly bent to the joint struggles and joint end. I now must go read the other biographies of this author I previously had never heard of, but I can greatly recommend this comprehensive and professionally thorough biography including the hallmarks of a well-done one: just have a read at his tremendous sources, including archives and private letters, a great lot of endnotes, bibliographies including manuscripts and newspapers of the times. Even if you care not for the man, you can get a good view of the critical and shaping times across continents between 1880 and 1916, the year K was killed with his staff upon the mined cruiser traveling to Russia for important allied meetings.
This thing is huge with a ton of primary sources woven into dialog and indented paras to show us not only what they did but how these critically placed people felt about each other: this book tells the events and more, but rather than making me put it down every three pages - I would look up after twenty and realize I'm late for something.
Is this historical writing or fan mail?.......2001-08-10
Lord Kitchner has an apologist in Mr. Pollock. If you are expecting an objective historical account, I do not recommend this book. The lack of objective thought makes one suspect that the book was written during the Victorian period and not at the start of the twenty-first century. Examples abound, but I will site two as representative. Rumors that Lord K was a homosexual because he never married and was very found of young adjutants are dismissed by Mr. Pollock as a modern bias that would make anyone fond of young men and not a womanizer a homosexual. That is not historical writing from sources, it is the opinion of the author in the nature of conjecture. Secondly, Mr. Pollack dismisses the Murant incident during the Boer war as a subject for "fiction" writers, after admitting that in a suspicious case Kitchner signed the execution papers and then made himself indisposed to appeals for clemency. Why did K do that Mr. Pollock? To answer that, by historical research is your task as a historian. Instead of research we have evasion of the issue. This blot on Lord Kitchner's reputation cannot be dismissed by an objective historian via relegating it to the dustbin of history, with a comment that the incident is a good one for fiction writers.
A life of enviable adventure........2001-05-22
Though it is now possible to recognise Kitchener as the architect of a British victory that he did not live to see in the Great War, he has often come across as a stiff, remote and unimaginative figure. This first volume of a two-part biography goes far to change that impression and portrays Kitchener as a sensitive man of high intelligence, capable of great affection, loyalty and kindness. His apparent shyness is here revealed to have been a result of chronic eye problems, which he was largely successful in covering up, while a serious facial wound left him with an almost invariably severe impression. A delightful photograph in this book, which is new to this reviewer at least, showing Kitchener beaming as he is reunited in Britain with the Cameron Highlanders who provided his personal escort in South Africa, reveals a totally different side to the conventional picture.
This biography makes for easy reading - and is a suitable companion piece to Mr.Pollock's excellent earlier work on that other great Royal Engineer, Charles Gordon, Kitchener's idol. The life here described is one of enviable adventure, admirable courage and daunting responsibility. Kitchener emerges not just as an ideal engineer and manager, but as a man of considerable daring and initiative, with an uncanny ability to pick up languages quickly, to understand alien cultures, and to evoke loyalty from peoples of widely differing racial and religious backgrounds. His diplomatic skills are also seen to be of a high order, as exemplified by his handling of the Fashoda incident and his efforts to bring the Boer War to a negotiated settlement. Somewhat of a surprise is the extent to which strong but unostentatious religious convictions underpinned his behaviour. A virtue of this biography is that Kitchener is portrayed as a man of his time, and judged as such, without projection of twenty-first century values on him - typical being the manner in which speculations by later biographers as to possible homosexuality are robustly dismissed in an appendix. This is one of those rare biographies that one would have wished to have been considerably longer. One would have welcomed considerably more detail on the more minor battles in the Sudan, such as Firket and Um Diyaykarat. This small gripe apart, this book is a splendid treat for aficionados of the Victorian period and one looks forward with impatience to the second volume.

Book Description
The inspiring and hilarious story of Patch Adams's quest to bring free health care to the world and to transform the way doctors practice medicine
• Tells the story of Patch Adam's lifetime quest to transform the health care system
• Released as a film from Universal Pictures, starring Robin Williams
Meet Patch Adams, M.D., a social revolutionary who has devoted his career to giving away health care. Adams is the founder of the Gesundheit Institute, a home-based medical practice that has treated more than 15,000 people for free, and that is now building a full-scale hospital that will be open to anyone in the world free of charge. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? Not for those who know and work with Patch. Whether it means putting on a red clown nose for sick children or taking a disturbed patient outside to roll down a hill with him, Adams does whatever is necessary to help heal. In his frequent lectures at medical schools and international conferences, Adams's irrepressible energy cuts through the businesslike facade of the medical industry to address the caring relationship between doctor and patient that is at the heart of true medicine.
All author royalties are used to fund The Gesundheit Institute, a 40-bed free hospital in West Virginia.
Adams' positive vision and plan for the future is an inspiration for those concerned with the inaccessibility of affordable, quality health care.
Today's high-tech medicine has become too costly, impersonal, and grim. In his frequent lectures to colleges, churches, community groups, medical schools, and conferences, Patch shows how healing can be a loving, creative, humorous human exchange--not a business transaction.

He Is The Real Deal.......2007-04-13
This book was an inspiration to read and also a trip down memory lane for me. I had the pleasure of knowing Hunter "Patch" Adams many years ago in Northern Virginia. I was a Stewardess at the time and was working for United Air Lines. I was based in Washington DC and lived in Norther Virginia. I first met Patch at a nutrition clinic where the woman running the clinic relied on muscle biopsies to let her know what nutrients a person was missing. Patch did the muscle biopsy. From that encounter a friendship developed and I used to visit he and his group at their home on weekends. I did this for several years and was able to observe the kindness and caring first hand. During those years many people came to the commune for medical care, myself included. It is joyful to see that Patch is getting the recognition he deserves.

This laughing doctor is no joke!.......2006-09-28
If you are interested in making this world a better place and if you are looking for role models, read about Patch Adams.
I've seen the movie, I've read the book, and everytime I think of Dr.Adams or speak of him to my friends and students, it's an inspiration.
I promise you. This laughing doctor is no joke. We need more people like him in this world.
So, read the book, watch the movie... and hopefully it will inspire you to take action!
The World's Doctor.......2006-05-23
Whoever reads this book and absorbs its messages will become a healthier individual and a better citizen of the world.
First, Patch examines the American healthcare system. He explains why corporate healthcare is a contradiction and cannot be permitted in a healthy society. He shows how the doctor-patient relationship has become more like a business interaction, and how this is relationship in itself is a fundamental plague on America.
Extending his experiences in healthcare to all society, Patch observes that we have lost touch with ourselves and each other, with nature, and lost perspective on the joy and wonder of life.
This criticism is where 99.9% of books and people stop. Patch is one of the few in the world who is not only deeply aware of the problems but has detailed plans on how to fix them and acts on those plans. In the book, he outlines his model for personal living and for a better society. A model based on the radical principles of joy and fun:
"The most revolutionary act anyone can commit is to be happy."
"We hear far more about pain because it seems to be associated with maturity. Enthusiastic joy is associated with childhood--as if it were something to outgrow."
Reading this book gave me a new conception of health. It's not just physical or personal like the parts of a car, it's psychological, intellectual, spiritual, social, political, economic, local, international, and interpersonal. Live creatively! Discover the fun we can have together! Live in peace! Now that's good medicine.
Finally! Medicine for people not for profit!!.......2006-02-25

This book by Hunter "Patch" Adams, M.D. (with Maureen Mylander) is about a social revolutionary who has devoted his life to giving away health care. Adams is founder of the "Gesundheit" Institute, a home-based medical practice in West Virginia that has treated more then 15,000 people for free. The Gesundheit Institute's dream is to build a free, full-scale hospital that will be open to anyone in the world.
This book is divided into two parts. The first part generally deals with Patch's philosophy on medicine while the second part describes the dream of opening up a free hospital.
Below I will state the title of each chapter for each part and give a quotation that represents the essence of each chapter.
PART 1: (About Patch and his medical philosophy)
(1) A health care system in pain. "I believe that health care [providers] who feel burned out are not allowing the "enrapture potential" in the doctor-patient relationship."
(2) An ideal medical practice. "Nosy, curious healers who make house calls will have the time of their lives!"
(3) Humor and healing, or why we're building a silly hospital. "People crave laughter as if it were an essential amino acid."
(4) Art, nature, and imagination. "Nature tops the list of potent tranquilizers and stress reducers. The mere sound of moving water has been shown to lower blood pressure."
(5) Rebuilding self, family, community, world. "I graduated from medical school `head smart.' While living in community, however, I have built buildings, farmed, raised goats, produced movies, and learned rope walking and unicycling."
PART 2: (The dream of a free hospital)
(6) The pilot period. "People often ask, 'How did you earn a living [at the Gesundheit Institute] if you weren't charging your patients.'"
(7) The dream defined. "[In our hospital], we are a company of friends, of givers and receivers, of doctors and patients."
(8) *Gareth's Story. "We watched a beautiful, orange sunset in silence and Patch turned to me [Gareth, a patient] and said, 'Do you have arthritis while watching this.'"
(9) *Organizing dreamers. "The entire purpose of a structure at Gesundheit is to support people's enthusiastic efforts to make the world a better, therefore healthier, place."
(10) Building a dream. "The atmosphere of [our free] hospital is intended to avoid the indifference projected by so many [other health care] facilities and to convey joy, enthusiasm, peace, caring, and openness."
(11) *Living on the land. "Dream. Dream wild. Extremely wild dreams. Somewhere back there is a wild seed waiting. Of that I am sure."
(12) Light a candle: how can I help? ("I" refers to readers of this book.) "Medicine practiced as a business [as it is today] hurts everyone. The true reward of medicine come from helping others and from self-discovery...Service is essential to healing and the pathway to inner peace."
(13) Passion and persistence. "I don't want people to be amazed by our passion and persistence, but inspired by us to work long and hard for what they believe in."
(14) Five years have passed. (This chapter is for the year 1998). "[This] book has really helped bring our ideas more clearly to a much wider audience all over the world. We get thousands of letters telling how our work has inspired similar projects and people-not just in the health field but in all human endeavors."
(* These chapters are not written by the authors.)
There are fifteen black and white pictures found in the middle of this book. There are also diagrams. I found all of these amusing and informative.
Those people who feel or have been brainwashed into believing that there is nothing wrong with today's health care system will probably not appreciate this book. (This statement especially applies to those people who profit from it.) All other people should find this honest book enlightening.
The movie "Patch Adams" starring Robin Williams was, I felt, very good. Even though I saw this movie first, I still learned a lot from this book.
Finally, to catch up on the latest developments of the Gesundheit Institute, I recommend visiting Patch Adams' internet site.
In conclusion, I have not seen a family physician for fifteen years (and have vowed never to see one or any other medical provider for the rest of my life). However, if I do become seriously ill (and the illness would have to be severe), I would gladly welcome the services of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams!!!
(first published 1993; last chapter for the year 1998; publisher's preface; foreword; author's acknowledgements; co-author's preface; introduction; 2 parts or 14 chapters; main narrative 195 pages; bibliography; index)

You can never get enough!!!.......2004-06-17
Patch Adam's life was portrayed by Robin Williams on the Hollywood Movie with the same name. Nevertheless, Patch Adam's life isn't just what you see in the movie, actually it is much more interesting and valuable when you read the true insights of this now-famous doctor.
Patch proposes a new way to treat diseases, by treating the persons. Humor, fun, magic tricks, sunsets, animals, or whatever is needed to make a person feel better and forget about his/her pain; is his philosophy.
The book describes the road Patch has taken to fullfill his dream, and the goals he has fixed for himself and his team. Working to give free, highest quality medicine is not an easy job. Still Patch smiles with his red nose, clownish hair, and funny clothes. You can never get enough about Patch, he is inspiring, funny, and intelligent. Surely this book will make you rethink lots of concepts and ideas. Great Book!!!

Gail Sheehy's taboo-breaking book about women's menopause, The Silent Passage, was named one of the most influential books of our time by the Library of Congress. Understanding Men's Passages is just as powerful and is certain to change the landscape of the psychology of men. Inspired by her husband's struggle with a midlife career crisis, Sheehy has compiled nearly 10 years worth of interviews and research into this book, revealing the fears and self-doubts of men over 40 who struggle with identity crises both at work and with their partners and children.
Sheehy also defines male menopause as a period in which hormones, including testosterone--and therefore potency and sex drive--drop, and men suffer from irritability and mood swings. She cites the statistics that claim more than 52 percent of men between the ages of 40 and 70 can expect some degree of impotence--which translates into at least 20 million men. "When ignored or denied, this sexual freeze extends more deeply into every aspect of a man's life than was previously thought," she writes. "It can be an underlying cause of depression, divorce, even suicide."
The men Sheehy interviewed were surprisingly candid about their situations and are glad that they've opened up a discourse. Says one man about the silence regarding sexual changes his father endured during his passage into male menopause: "The only sign of getting older probably was that earlier trip to the bathroom in the morning--which we call the six a.m. passage." In addition to covering male menopause and the latest treatments for impotence, Sheehy also includes chapters on how to handle empty-nest syndrome, job downsizing, and the strain on marriage that retirement brings about, but her main point rings clear throughout: "We need an expanded definition of manliness."
Book Description
Her stunning bestsellers Passages and New Passages brilliantly mapped the changes we live through from youth to maturity. Now Gail Sheehy guides contemporary men through the turbulent challenges and surprising pleasures that begin at forty. As a man crosses that threshold, he is bound to ask midlife's most troubling question: Now what? Work anxieties, concerns over sexual potency, marital and family stress, issues of power, all take on new urgency as men contemplate the decades ahead. But as Gail Sheehy reveals in this major new book, midlife is precisely the period when men are most likely to reinvent themselves and become masters of their fate. In Understanding Men's Passages, Sheehy offers all men--and the women in their lives--an essential guide to self-discovery.
Hundreds of bold, imaginative men--celebrities as well as everyday heroes--share here their most intimate desires, deepest fears, and most fervent cravings for renewal. Decade by decade, Sheehy uncovers the real issues facing men today: finding new passion and purpose to invigorate the second half of their lives, dealing with "manopause," surviving job change, enjoying post-nesting zest, defeating depression, and learning what keeps a man young.
Informative and inspiring, grounded in fact and full of fascinating life stories, Understanding Men's Passages is a landmark that will take its place beside Gail Sheehy's epoch-making Passages and New Passages.
Customer Reviews:
You are not alone.......2007-08-15
The first thing I asked myself while reading this book was, "How well can a woman really understand men's passage?" After all, how many women will read a book about menopause written by a man, doctor or not, and not stop and think, "Yeah, right. You can tell me about it when you feel the hot-flash furnace kick in."
However, perhaps a woman might be able to look at the situation more objectively. Certainly Ms. Sheehy has done a fair amount of research and talked to plenty of men about their "middle age." I have seen a few negative reviews of the book based on the fact that it appears to lean towards the "touchy-feely, new age" end of the cultural spectrum. While I will admit that the author does seem to lean more left than right, I haven't found her to be objectionably so. Besides, no one should take any author's words as gospel. Take what is good and leave the rest.
It's a bit strange to hear one's own words coming out of the mouths of the men in the book. Sometimes you think that you are the only one in the world who is feeling this way, and that you are on a solo journey. While it is true that we all must seek our own path, it appears that we have plenty of company along the road. To know that you are not the only one going through a time like this provides a sense of community and a hope that you will come out on the other end as well as some of the men in the book have.
I can see where people reading this book might think that it is typical "west coast think," but I have to say that I can agree with most of what is in the book. Besides that, the author relies on studies and interviews from all over the country, not just the west coast. I think that she may be a touch too feminist in dealing with a male issue, but what the heck, she is a woman, and while I'm sure she was trying to be objective, it would be hard for her not to see issues through a woman's eyes. Still, don't let this put you off if you are a man living through these "passages" - there is value here.
For those who want checklists of things-to-do to manage these passages, you are out of luck. She does provide plenty of examples of men who have made it through, or who are working on it, which at least presents methods used by others that you may adopt or not, depending on what is useful to you.
If you are lost in middle-age, or beyond, I would recommend this book for its therapeutic effects. It may not cure you, but it might ease the suffering a bit. In truth, I think that the only thing that will resolve the issue is time, but you need to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel in order to commit to the necessary time. This book provides that little glimmer of light.
New Book, Interesting material.......2007-01-09
I gave this book as a gift. I heard about it in my Psyc class. and with rave reviews the teacher recommended it as the contemporary version of Maslow's Heirarchy principals.
Understanding Men's Passages.......2006-02-17
It's an easy-to-read book for the amateur trying to figure out where the man in my life is going. Since he's still in my house, it's good to have a map.
As a man grows older .......2005-10-20
This is an effort to help the silent sex, the Male of the Species understand the pains and problems ( and also the opportunities) of aging. For Sheehy the first forty years are the years of the competitive male, seeking to conquer in the world. The next years , she says, should be the time for the Men to become a more gentle, more multi- goaled kind of being. The forty plus Male should be thinking and working for a better relationship with spouse, for greater consideration of children, for more harmonious relation to others.
Here she points out how the silent species does not often talk about the 'male menopause' the loss of sexual, physical power. the loss of control , which comes with aging. Her effort is to help Men better understand how to make happier and better lives for themselves and for others.
This kind of thinking can, I am sure, be of help to many. But I do not think it will stop those driven, intense , ambitious, long-distance runners who work and work and work because that is where their heart and hope is.
Not All It's Cracked Up To Be.......2004-01-10
Although well written and researched, Gail Sheehy's book was a major disappointment. Having experienced many years of discomfort, especially on location, I assumed that somewhere in 'Understanding Men's Passages' I'd find advice on how to treat my chronic hemorrhoids. Alas, not a word. Clint Eastwood made the same mistake, but he cured his by actually reading the book in one sitting.

A Pet Owner's Dream Book.......2006-08-09
This is the book that every pet owner should have. This book is well written and easy to read and understand. It opens up a world of natural pet care not only for dogs but for other pets as well. Let's take that statement further. The book also gets you thinking about your own health and what you can do to improve it naturally. Once you start reading Whole Health, it is hard to put the book down. It is packed with useful information on treating various ailments and also discusses the problems our pets face in a world filled with man made chemicals and toxins.
"Whole Health" is appropriately titled because this book looks at the "whole picture" and brings to light everything in the house, yard, environment and food that effects a dogs health. There are so many things to consider that we do on a day to day basis. Did you ever think of what that floor cleaner is doing to your dog when he licks a crumb off the floor or walks across it with wet paws? Natural pet care is more than what your dog eats. The authors take it a step further by offering additional resources for expanding your knowledge to give your pets the healthiest life that you can.
This is a book that I will enjoy reading again and referring to many times. My two dogs are moving around better and I can tell they are feeling better and happier. Thank you Kim and Jill for your passion and dedication to providing better lives for our furry companions.
At long last! A book that's REALLY about natural pet care!.......2006-06-30
I proudly place this book in my library within easy reach, as I will be referring to it often. Copies of this milestone book will soon be given as gifts to my family, friends, co-workers, and my vet. Such wonderful information should be shared with everyone who has a dog or is even just thinking about getting a dog. Perhaps the most interesting chapter to me is the one about diet. It makes perfect sense to feed a species appropriate diet, yet so many people are clueless and continue to feed their dogs garbage that's not fit to dump in a compost pile. Fantastic work Dr. Elliot and Kim Bloomer! Your book is truly exceptional!
Whole Health for happy dogs.......2006-06-27
This book should be a requirment for all dog owners. It is what every new dog owner needs and what people that have had dogs for a long time should have. It is easy to read and understand. It covers feeding and many preventative health care tips. It is not only very informative but a very attractive book with many color pictures. A must have. Edith Chupp

Here's my 2 cents worth about this wonderful book. I would HIGHLY recommend it to everyone who owns a dog. The information in this book is incredibly useful and it is quick and easy to read. There are helpful charts on oils, homeopathics and how to use them, as well as a reference chart on acupuncture and pressure points for the dog! This is a MUST have book for me and I am so happy to have it in my library. I will be referring to it for many years to come.
Thank you, Kim (and Dr. Jill), for a job very well done! I give it 5 stars with 2 thumbs up!
Very informative - chock full of information.......2006-06-16
I purchased this book immediately after picking up our new puppy. This book is far MORE than a handbook - I read this book cover to cover the day I received it. It's an easy read, truly full of information on how to naturally care for your dog. The book answered every question I had, as well as provided me with ideas that I wouldn't have ever thought of (and has great pictures, too!) I can confidently say, as a result of reading this book, our puppy will lead a happy and healthy life.

Quick/Easy depends on the experience of the knitter!.......2007-08-19
This was one of my first Debbie Bliss books and I did the sweater on the cover in a magenta/cranberry color for my daughter. It didn't seem quick or easy, but well worth the effort. I'm probably going to do it again with Debbie Bliss yarn next time though. The super chunky sweater for my son turned out cute too! There are many patterns in this book that I wished I had time to do, but alas the day is not long enough. I'm am very glad to have this in my library for when I do make the time!
Classy, stylish baby clothes.......2006-10-18
I found this collection of patterns very refreshing. After finding such a wealth of "quick knitting" patterns that call for large needles and chunky acrylic yarn (yielding, in my opinion, ugly and cheap-looking baby clothes), it's nice to see patterns for beautiful, classy, stylish baby clothes created at a fine gauge suitable to a small body. I also love the color choices shown in the photographs, as well as the use of natural fiber yarns like wool and cotton. Of course, the knitter can use whatever color and fiber he/she chooses, but I appreciate the inspiration to knit for babies using colors other than pastels and gaudy brights and fibers other than acrylic. I'm eagerly awaiting the next Bliss book!
great simple designs, but not easy.......2006-05-02
The other reviews are correct in my opinion: not necessarily for beginners, but nice designs. I have knitted for many years and these sweaters are not difficult, but they don't exactly whip up the way other patterns do. I love a couple of the designs in this book very much. I have probably knitted 5 of the patterns and some of them several times. I seem to always come back to this book, even though I agree that the explanations are a bit confusing sometimes. I recently read the intro to the book and found it a bit condescending the way she made it sound like you were a beginner if you wanted to knit from this book.
QUICK BABY KNITS.......2006-02-26
I am very pleased to have a copy of this well presetned and useful book of patterns for this age group
Ditto to what others have said.......2006-01-05
A more apt title might have been "Yet More Bliss Baby Knits." Since when is a long sleeved, tunic length sweater knit in moss stitch on size 3 needles quick? Even in baby sizes, a project like that takes time. There are many quicker Debbie Bliss baby sweaters in her other books. This might be a nice book to peruse at the library, but it probably wouldn't even make it home in my book bag.

Very Helpful Book.......2007-08-25
I really like this book and working with cell salts. It's amazing how you can balance your body with 12 simple homeopathy minerals. Very good resource.
Where is the book?!.......2007-07-09
I cannot tell you how many times I've asked my wife where this book is. I refer to it frequently before administering cell salts to our 4 yr old and 2 yr old. This book is very easy to use and provides effective salt combinations for various conditions.
I will recommend this book to all my patients. They will be able to go home and practice cell salt therapy effectively. Thanks Skye!
The Most Dog-Eared Book in my Medical Library.......2005-01-07
I have a busy naturopathic medical practice in Seattle, and this book is invaluable to me. Cell salts are so non-toxic that I feel comfortable using them with all my patients, even those who are on multiple prescription medications. They are safe for children, inexpensive and useful for both acute and chronic conditions. I highly recommend this book for practitioners and lay people alike; it's a great tool for your practice or your household medicine chest.
My Most Used Book........2001-07-31
This homeopathic self-help book is fantastic. It is simple to understand and I was able to put this book into practice right away. There are 12 cell salts, each one replaces a different mineral in the body which in turn heals the body. It has a great index of different health problems and tells which cell salts to use for each. What's best about cell salts is how cheap and safe they are to use. Diane

Read all 4 !!.......2005-01-21
I just reread all 4 Kiltumber books by Niall and Chris and I must say I enjoyed them more now in 2005 than I did 9 years ago. To experience the trials and tribulations of this family in Kilmihil makes me wonder how many people followed their path and relocated to Ireland. Now, 20 years after the 1st book the children are grown,Niall is a world class and best selling novelist and Chris about to publish again soon in 2005.
Read all 4 books in order and I promise you'll be tempted to move to County Clare.
Not quite as enjoyable as others in this series.......2001-12-24
Over the last few weeks, I've become quite the fan of Niall and Chris. Reading or acquiring all of their books -- fiction and nonfiction. This book left me feeling a bit disappointed but at the same time wanting an update.
I had to smile at all the visitors from abroad showing up at their doorstep --- I envisioned myself doing the same thing. Now I doubt I would show up unannounced -- but I still will make an effort to see the town of Kilmihil.
This book definitely should be read after reading at least the first book -- O' Come Ye Back to Ireland. I doubt that those who haven't read the first book will be able to keep interested. And whereas the first book made settling in the west of Ireland sound romantic, Niall Williams seems to be discouraging people from doing what he and Chris.
That said, I am glad I read it and loved hearing about young Joseph and his sister Deirdre.
Change in the West of Ireland.......2000-02-24
I have thoroughly enjoyed this fourth installment in the saga of Niall & Christine, and Deirdre and Joseph (the first chapter tells of their adoption of Joseph.) This book is very contemplative in nature, and focuses on what it is to belong to a community, a society, a nation. What does it mean to be Irish? to be American? And how are these things changing? Change is the other theme that is present throughout the book. There have been many changes in the West since Niall & Christine first moved there: some good, some bad, but most not so easily classified as "good" or "bad". This book is very thought provoking, and a very enjoyable read. Thank you Niall and Christine for continuing to share your lives with us.
