Irene Brion's experiences as a WAC in WW II begin with her enlistment in 1943, as a young former teacher with a patriotic yearning to serve her country and a desire for adventure. Ms Brion's career in the WACS takes her across the US to New Guinea and the Phillipines. She chronicles her experiences in marvelous detail, sharing her thoughts, joys, doubts, sorrows and fears with clarity and understated forthrightness. What shines through is an adventurous spirit, an inquiring mind, a very observant eye, cheerful matter-of-factness and the gift of placing the reader very much in her Li'l Abners (WAC field shoes)in the midst of the day-to-day realities of her service in the Pacific war--life in tents and Quonset huts, enduring monsoons and humidity, longing for letters from home. We meet the people she meets and feel as if we, too, know them--the WAC's, GI's and Australian diggers who pass in and out of her life. What is most striking is the way in which these young WACS, far from home, took up the challenges facing them with grace and humour. Strong friendships helped alleviate the boredom, arbitrariness and uncertaintty that seems to accompany wartime service. For those of us born in the post-war generation, both in the US and Australia, Ms Brion brings history to life and personalizes it. She also briefly fills in historcal details about the New Guinea and Phillipines campaigns. The writing is beautifully descriptive and conversational as well as informative. It was surprising to learn that the WAC's were sometimes viewed rather negatively Stateside-not because of enemy propaganda--but because they were seen as taking the jobs of male soldiers. My only regret as a reader is that the memoir ended so quickly with her discharge and return home. I wanted Ms Brion's conversation to continue, to explain what happened next in her life after the war and what became of her friends--I wasn't ready to say goodbye. But, perhaps, like wartime itself, delightful meetings seem all too short. It is a real treat to have been introduced to this Lady GI.

This is a great book for a person with any type of heart problems or who wants to lower their risk of heart problems. It is not really geared to losing weight, but to being healthier. It was recommended by my husband's doctor and is great for heart disease.

Think of this: Greek men have 90% less heart attacks than American men. Yes, I said 90% less. Statistics like this have led scientists to spend more than 20 years studying the Mediterranean diet, Dr. Ozner, a cardiologist based in Miami, summarizes the enormous benefits of this lifestyle in his book. He offers many patient tested (& patient suggested) recipes, all delicious. The basic foods in this diet are pasta, fresh vegetables, beans, whole grains, cold-water fish, nuts, olives, tomatoes, olive oil and red wine. Simple, but rarely followed in America. The Mediterranean diet is rich in benefits, inexpensive and there's an added benefit: weight loss. The book is a winner, easy to read and highly recommended.

It's Greek to me!.......2007-01-17

Just got the book; I bought it used. Hardcover. Seems like a good, basic Greek cookbook. There are a few pencilled-in notes from a previous owner which I actually appreciate. The book has the favorites: baklavah, roast leg of lamb, moussaka, and of course that delicious lemon sauce the Greeks often use. I'm more of an eater than a cooker, so I like this book. The recipes seem easy and that's perfect for me; all I need is a bit of a direction for spices and so forth, and hoopla - it's dinner!

I found this book 25 years ago in a library. It was out of print then, so I photo-copied the entire book. I have been using it since, and every recipe is wonderful. I am glad the book is once again in print, so I can buy a copy. (Actually, I will buy several. This will make a great gift for someone.) Enjoy.

The recipes are mostly plagiarized and cleverly edited by this author (unfortunately this happens frequently with cookbook authors).

Many of the dishes bear no relationship to the reality of the dish...with ingredients left out and often in the wrong proportions. Non Greek cooks may think that this book beats all, but it is clearly a mediocre presentation of Greek cooking at best.

I have cooked from Ms. Yianilos' book for thirty years, and continue to use it as a trusted friend for cooking for buffets, and small dinner parties, as well as for family dinners. The recipes are inventive, complex, and tasty. They do make more than the author suggests: if she says something serves four, it probably serves eight. But I would never give up my copy for anything!

This is honestly a great book, it helped me. Im fairly new to model railroading (only about 4 years) and it has honestly made me into the goto guy (within my model railroad club) for bridges and tunnels. It covers all sorts of wierd and wonderfull ideas for your layouts. A GREAT resource and addition to any model railroaders libary.

As a 28 year veteran of professional railroading, with 18 years in the bridge department, Jeff has indeed managed to bridge the gap between prototype and modeler. He explains in great detail the "why" that goes into selecting the proper type or size bridge for a particular location. Many beautiful bridge models are spoiled because they would just not be practical in the real world. Jeff did an excellent job of researching the subject material and has made it easy for a modeler to build a very nice, prototypical bridge for a given geographic location.

Timeless Quality.......2007-06-29

Awareness of a person's own learning style and the need to develop a balanced learning style are outstanding features of this book. Teachers have the difficult task of using multi-modalilty techniques to address all learning styles. However, not all material can be presented that way. Also, 80% of learners are visual learners. Sometimes modern trends in multi-modality teaching even tend to short-change that 80% in efforts to reach the all learners.

It is limiting for a student to have a negative attitude about even trying any style other than the one he or she uses best. Learners should maximize their own most efficient styles but this should not be done at the exclusion of other styles. There is probably no one who learns only one way.

There is a timeless quality to the material in this book. It is based on sound research and experience. Fads in toys come and go, but new toys can be found or improvised to meet the needs of a variety of learning styles.

An Excellent book for parents, educators and counselors........2003-12-06

We know children don't arrive with instruction manuals but this book comes close. By organizing children's learning styles as "lookers," "listeners," or "movers," Dr. Lauren Bradway and Ms. Hill have made it easier for parents, teachers and anyone involved with children, to not only encourage a child's innate gifts but also in building upon those gifts. When parents, professionals and educators accept a child's inherent qualities and personality and work with it a child's confidence is increased, paving a road of positive learning experiences. In response, a child will feel safer and more confident to undertake new and more challenging tasks.

As I was reading this book I learned that my own learning style since childhood has been a "listener" and reminisced how during my school years, I was often misunderstood and forced to learn in a way incompatible with my own style, which created stress for me. How I wish my parents and many of my educators had had access to this book back then. I've since developed and love the "mover," and "looker," sides of me, but how much simpler the whole process would have been if I had had the guidance as a child!

How to Maximize Your Child's Learning Ability is written in a thoughtful, explicit, well detailed and researched way. It is chock-full of useful information, clear case studies, toys, learning aids and recommendations, for the parents of children of all ages from preschoolers to teens.

I highly recommend this book for parents and teachers as well as for psychologists, psychotherapists and anyone who works with children. I will be using this book as an aid in family counseling and recommending it to my clients who have children. I have already bought several copies for the parents of our young nephews and nieces.

What a wonderful book this is! Dr. Lauren Bradway and Barbara Albers Hill do an excellent job of describing what "Looker", "Listener", and "Mover" children are. They also show parents how they can help their children become a more "balanced learner"!

I enjoyed reading the examples of each child's learning style, and was appreciative for the many informative checklists spread throughout the book. Parents can discover what kind of learning style their child has, and put to use the many wonderful suggestions provided throughout the book. These ideas will show parents how they can help their children develop their own style of learning.
