What a Gem of a Book...!.......2004-08-28
"Letters from the Pacific" should be required reading for all U.S. Military Chaplains. The letters written by Chaplain Russell Stroup show the side of a sensitive, caring man who ministered to the troops assigned to him, plus even the enemy (as P.O.W.'s during WWII) on occasion. A Godly man, his letters have been edited and presented to the public by his nephew, Richard Cartwright Austin. I have the hardback book on my shelf, and will read it again in the future.
I wish I could have met him; there don't seem to be enough heroes these days.

Dietrich von Hildebrand, widely regarded as one of the great Catholic philosophers of the 20th century, is well-known for his numerous books, but, until this present work, not much has been known of his remarkable and inspiring life. A Lion of the Church.......2001-01-30
"The Soul of a Lion" is a very moving account of the life of Dietrich von Hildebrand, one of the most important Catholic theologians of the 20th century. Since it was written by his lovely wife, Alice, she does not pretend to be an unbiased observer. However, while she clearly writes from a heart filled with deep love and affection, she also recounts his mistakes and character faults without attempting to whitewash them.
Some of the highlights of the book include the sections detailing his very cultured, very European uprbringing; his conversion to Catholicism; and his courageous, outspoken opposition to Nazism, resulting in his dangerous escape to America with his family.
My one disappointment with the book is the ending-- Alice von Hildebrand ends her account with his arrival in the United States. This necessarily leaves untold the story of how the first Mrs. von Hildebrand (Gretchen) died, and how Alice had the great good fortune of meeting and eventually marrying Dietrich. Surely this is another moving tale which deserves to be told! Perhaps, someday, a continuation??

One reviewer noted that reviews fall into two catergories, loved it or hated it. I read it with the advantage of having practiced with Vanda's students People who hate this book wanted clearer descriptions. But, Vanda's genius was this- she applied Krishnamurti's idea of the "pathless path" to the physical discipline of hatha yoga.
I had a firm background in traditional forms of hatha yoga and had been teaching for several years. The first weekend workshop I took completely decontructed my yoga practice because I practiced yoga, like most of us, from the outside in. Vanda taught an intuitive approach, from the inside out. Attention and resting in the body are key elements of this practice.
The effects are wonderous. I'm pushing 60 and my body feels better than it has since my mid-20's. Even without the opportunity of working with one of Vanda's students, there is much to be learned from this book.

I was hoping for more yoga philosophy or atleast technique but this is mostly a coffee table book. Still inspiring and pretty!

Then buy this book. Looking for information on yoga? Buy a book that has photos of postures with detailed instructions. This book is basically an art book with some yogic themes.
experiencing our bodies as architecture.......2006-09-03
This brilliantly written and illustrated book introduces yoga students, both beginners and masters, to the design principles that make the structure of the human body such a work of art. I have taken a workshop from one of her students, and find her approach to yoga much gentler than other forms of the discipline, more attuned to the body's own structural engineering. The book is a delight to browse in as a coffee table book, or to study as a serious guide. It is also a triumphant resistance against ageism!
Excellent Inspirational Yoga Book.......2003-07-27
This is not so much a technique, how-to book. It is more about the spirit of yoga. It's beautiful pictures and wonderful meditations on the meaning or intentions of the poses illustrates and deepens an understanding of yoga and meditation. There are three parts to the book. The first part takes up the majority of the book (125 pages). It's called "the Story of Stories" and is about the philosophy of yoga. The second part called "The Asanas" is about 34 pages. It is where the poses are illustrated through drawings and photographs and described in short paragraphs. I would not recommend it as the sole source for beginners, however, it would make a great supplement to a yoga class or videotape/dvd. The third section is called, "Breathing" and is 8 pages long. It has excellent pictures that illustrate the concepts described in this section. A list of references and an index greet you at the end. The reference lists 32 books. Ranging from "Disc Regeneration" by O.J. Ressel to Deepak Chopra's "Quantum Healing," to "Symbolism in Greek Mythology" by Paul Diel, to " The Revival of Qui." by Kunio Miura, to F.J. Bueche's "Understanding the World of Physics," and Elisabeth Ripely's "Leonardo da Vinci. A Biography."

This is a beautiful book with many great ideas for creative Mexican cooking. There is not a typical enchilada or burrito recipe in the book, and the photography is wonderful.
World Class Mexican Cuisine.......2003-02-27
This is a magical book. Mexican food is vast, bold, spicy, festive and over all, plain delicious. Richard Sandoval brings a new element to this mix, Complexity. Mr. Sandoval polishes a Diamond in the rough.
The genius of this chef lies in the fact that he gives layers of flavor to ingredients that are known to be overpowering. Latin American food in general, is very direct and bold. It is an incredible achievement to tame and refine these ingredients, to create dishes that reveal contrast and balance, while preserving the essence of Mexican folklore.
The Mexico of these days is vibrant and cosmopolitan but has deep roots of tradition. Mr. Sandoval?s cuisine is a great representation of this era.
If you are looking for classical Mexican cuisine buy something else, but if you want to experience one of the most interesting and exciting cuisine of the last decade, this is your book.
Who would have thought that Mexican cuisine would reach this level of sophistication? After you read this book, you will never think of Mexico in the same way.

This is an excellent book if you're looking to bring a westie into your life. It's full of health care information and explains the feisty personality of these wonderful dogs. If you're not an active person a westie is not for you

What I wish I knew before I got pregnant........2004-06-26
My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004. My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces. The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist. Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later. My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later. I was 31 weeks into my pregancy. He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home. This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.
I am 30 years old and was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure two years ago. This book is a step by step account of what happened to me. I developed pregnancy induced hypertension which turned into preeclampsia. None of my doctors (family practicioner or OB/GYN) told me how dangerous and high risk my pregnancy would be. I wish I knew then what this book has taught me now, it has been a real eyeopener and lifesaver.
essential for (expecting) preemie-parents.......2001-11-21
Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.
When I heared I was going to have my baby within half an hour, at 26 weeks of pregnancy... I had no idea what was laying ahead of me.
This book prepares you on what to expect when you have a high-risk pregnancy and takes you trough the 24 hours after delivery, your preemies growth and maturation, the neonatal unit, bringing your baby home and later-life development. There is also a part on babies with special needs and a part about when things go wrong.
From the many lonely hours I could not be with my baby, I spent many reading this book. The stories of other parents helped me survivng the nicu and the many charts and statistics helped me to get an image on what to expect.
Thank you very much for this book.
The book for a high risk pregnancy and the NICU.......2001-07-18
A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU. I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming. This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely.
Helpful beyond words.......2001-04-30
This is THE book I wished I'd known about in advance when we developed problems later in my pregnancy. I actually think anyone expecting a baby where there is a possibility of it becoming a high-risk pregnancy (and face it, that could be any of us, right?) should read this book so that you can be prepared to be the best possible advocate for yourself and your child in the NICU and during the transition out. It will also help you understand the complexities of what goes on in the NICU so you can work well with the staff caring for your infant.
Essential reading.......2000-11-21
This book has been a God-send. Its clear, comprehensive text, helpful illustrations, and authoritative advice (the lead author is a top Houston neonatologist) is just what my husband and I needed when we found out our baby was going to be born prematurely.
We especially liked all of the stories and testimony from parents, people who have experienced the fear and uncertainty of high-risk pregnancy. Their stories are incredibly reassuring. We needed to know we weren't alone.
This book is a must-have for any parent whose pregnancy is not going as planned.

American GIs who participated in the invasions of such far-flung Pacific Ocean locations as New Georgia, Makin, Tarawa, Kwajalein, and Eniwetok during World War II could always count on a blistering reception from the Japanese forces defending those isles. They could also depend on their efforts being documented for their fellow soldiers and folks back home by a good-natured, talented photographer from Gary, Indiana: John A. Bushemi.
Assigned to Yank, the weekly magazine written by and for enlisted men, Bushemi specialized in "photography from a rifle's length vantage point," according to his colleague Merle Miller. His work with his ever-present Speed Graphic camera earned Bushemi the distinction of being the "outstanding combat photographer" for the magazine, noted its managing editor Joe McCarthy. That distinction came as no surprise to those who knew Bushemi in Gary, where he had received numerous awards for his work as a photographer for the Gary Post-Tribune. While working for the newspaper, he had earned the nickname "One Shot" for his uncanny ability to capture even the fastest action with just one click of his camera's shutter.
Written by Hoosier historian and writer Ray E. Boomhower, and featuring an introduction by Indiana University professor of history James H. Madison, "One Shot": The World War II Photography of John A. Bushemi examines the life of this son of Sicilian immigrants who worked in Gary's steel mills for a time to earn enough money to buy his first camera. The book features Bushemi's work, from his early days photographing soldiers training at the Field Artillery Replacement Center at Fort Bragg in North Carolina to his frontline assignments among the grizzled American forces who engaged in the bitter fighting against the Japanese. It also tells the story of his friendship with best-selling author Marion Hargrove, whose book See Here, Private Hargrove made Bushemi a well-known figure to the home-front audience and GIs around the world.
Covering the invasion of Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands on Febraury 19, 1944, Bushemi and other correspondents became the target for a series of Japanese knee-mortar shells. Shrapnel from the shells hit and mortally wounded the photographer. As navy surgeons frantically attempted to save Bushemi's life onboard a transport ship, the photographer gave his epitaph, telling Miller: "Be sure to get those pictures back to the office."

This book contains two parts: (1) the life and photos of John A. Bushemi and (2) works by the photojournalist. The photographs do not portray the horrors of war but rather the CULTURE of military personnel and the people of the south Pacific. A must for anyone student of photography.
Not What I Expected.......2006-03-26
At first I thought this book dealt with the WWII overseas combat photos of John Bushemi, and even though many of them were shot overseas they do not show the horrors of war, the stark chaos of combat infantrymen fighting in an arena of death and destruction, the solemnity of the aftermath of battle. As a combat photographer, John Bushemi had many combat photos, but they definitely are not in this book. I would not buy this book again, and I would not encourage anyone else to buy it.
