A huge disappointment.................2005-01-25

I found the author's advice to be overly simplistic - may be fine for parents who are looking for the basics of behavior management, but not very helpful for kids with trickier issues that require more expertise. The author appears to have a behavioral approach to management which seems geared towards kids with subtle anxiety issues and minimal emotional problems. Some of her advice is along the lines of methodology we have used in the past which exacerbated my son's problems. She points out the behavior of a therapist who, supposedly out of frustration at his unmotivated client, made this reluctant child more anxious by forcing her to face her fears - this sounds like a rationalization for clearly inappropriate professional behavior that she suggests was triggered by a difficult client. Well, then what is the point of psychotherapy, if not to motivate the client through the continuously rational guidance and support of a professional. Further, the author uses moralistic terminology, such as 'stubborn', to describe children who are reluctant. I would not endorse the temper and tone of this book. She does at one point give some rather basic advice for helping children who cannot control their anxious behavior, which suggests to me that most of this book isn't really aimed for children with significant underlying anxiety problems, but rather for sensitive kids who often get labeled as difficult. The author seems to be suggesting that all these kids need is some structure and straightening out. Even so, I've read more empathetic and flexible books regarding spirited, quirky kids that seem to have a better handle on the underlying needs of kids.

The author does categorize dysfunctional thought patterns which could be helpful if you can get past the undertones of the book -that therapists can do no harm unless provoked by the child and family's dysfunction. Other books I've read do ask the family to take a look at certain patterns but the tone is more inviting to self-inspection because it is easier to foster a trusting relationship with a therapist who takes a less cut and dried behavioral approach.

There were tidbits that were useful in this book, but overall, a huge waste of my money.

Parenting an Anxious child.......2004-08-19

Parenting my anxious child is not only difficult but it has created even more stress for my entire family. The feelings of anxiety are contagious and it is a constant struggle to counteract that with calmness. Thank God I found this book. I recommend it to any parent that is looking for real answers and real solutions to helping your child. I have recently been introduced to an anxiety reducing CD called "Indigo Dreams". My son's teacher was using it as part of a lesson plan from the Children's Awareness Curriculum. The entire class was CALMING DOWN within minutes of listening to it. Now my child is learning techniques on how to manage his anxiety while I learn the "Keys to Parenting an Anxious Child"

Dr. M. Branches Out.......2003-02-16

I saw Dr. Manassis from about 1994-1997 at the the Hospital for Sick Children's Psychiatric Department in Toronto. She is widely regarded as a leading Canadian paediatric expert in Anxiety disorders. I am pleased to see that she has written this book. Her advice on childhood anxiety is valuable, and I am a living testament to her expertise and proficiency in her work. I wish Dr. Manassis great success for this book and recommend it to parents of anxious children everywhere.

Keys to Parenting your Anxious Child.......2000-10-19

This book provides a wealth of information for parents who want to help their children learn to overcome anxiety. It explains what anxiety is (and is not), how it affects each member of the family, how to cope, how to communicate effectively with your child, and how to stop undesirable behavior. It addresses the effects of certain parenting styles and how these styles can help or hinder progress toward better mental health. There is a chapter that discusses medications; if they are necessary and which ones are helpful. It also addresses how to communicate with others about your child's current situation (school, etc.) Most importantly, the principals taught in this book can be followed and applied easily. I am the parent of an anxious adolescent, and I found this book to be helpful, encouraging, and enlightening. I highly recommend this book.

Childhood anxiety.......2000-09-18

I read this book when it first came out. It helped me to feel as if I was not alone. Some of the suggestions were implemented and were successful. Charting behavior in particular I found to be beneficial. An excellent read. Good advice for parents who are at there wits end. This is the book we have been waiting for.

Excellent wedding gift!.......2002-10-02

I was very pleased when I received this book. More so than I expected to be after reading some of the other reviews. The idea I was going for was to have a record book to cover the couple's entire life together and not be limited to just the wedding as so many books are. Those always get put away. Very tasteful decor throughout, without a lot of stuff you don't need, with room for a few pictures in each section, and envelopes for mementos, I think this will be a keepsake the couple I chose it for will cherish throughout their life. I also bought "The Book of Us" to include in the gift, as I thought it would be an excellent companion. Add a pen, some coffee mugs, and maybe some designer coffee ... and VOILA!!! Excellent, unique wedding gift!

Only so-so, try to see it in person first..........2002-07-31

I'm giving this journal/album 3 stars because it's a great idea and the quality seems good, but I was disappointed enough with it to return it.
First, I'm a fan of the author/designer's other books, and I was absolutely shocked at how boring this book looks -- I expected some neat graphics or design but it's really just like every other generic bride's book out there. If I'd seen the interior I'd have never even bothered.
Second, the "my wedding" section is not very useful -- there's not enough room for this to function as your wedding memory album, and if you *have* such an album, you don't need to bother with filling out the section in this book.
Finally, while the ideas for what kind of memories to record are nice, there are too many of them and honestly, do I need to write 3 lines about our house *every* year? How much can I say about one house? I would have preferred some blank space each year along with a new suggestion of things to write about.
There is very little photo space, and while I am fine with the idea of picking one or two best photos there ought to at least be one page per year for photos and memorabilia (you get 2 pages for every five years).
To sum up -- I think some people could love this, but to me it comes off like one of those fill-in-one-million-blanks baby books that no-one ever really fills out. I love the idea of recapping each year, but this book just isn't going to work for that.

Absolutely wonderrful..........2001-08-28

This is going to become a staple gift that I give to loving couples and newlyweds. It was truly a trip through time for my husband and me to fill out. In fact, there isn't enough room to include some of our stories (especially in courtship). I feel that when our children read this someday they will read a love story. I thought there was plenty of room for photos given that you select a few speical ones to include. Plan on really spending the time to make this book special for years and generations to come.

Not Perfect Wedding Keepsake.......2000-12-20

As you know it is difficult to find a good Keepsake Book for your Wedding or Anniversary out there. This hard-cover book will keep well in the years to come yet I was disappointed by the fact that there were only two pages for wedding photos. I guess I was hoping that this book would have a fat section for wedding day photos and keepsakes such as invitations and special cards received. Also the glue from the velcro "pocket" sections caused yucko grease stains on two parts of the book. Overall this book has all the major ingredients to make a fine journal and keepsake for all your marriage memories. I only hope I remember to write in it every year for the next 25 years!

The contents of this book depict the love and devotion of the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as they endured trials and tragedies during the early years of the Church's organization (mid 1800's to mid 1900's). The descriptions given about each piece of artwork are clear and concise. Avard T. Fairbanks was truly a professional in his time. His artwork is thought provoking and provides the reader with a clear insight as to the devotion and hardships the Mormons had to endure. Truly an amazing compilation of sculpture.

An investing book that inspires while giving sound advice.......2003-06-07

I accidentally found the author's radio program a few months ago. After calling in for some beginning investing advice, I got a copy of this book and just finished reading it. Believe it or not, this book is a page turner. It is written in a style that motivates you to get your financial life in order. The author gives sound advice that even a beginner can understand and implement. About 1/3 of the way through the book, I began to feel that some concepts were being repeated, but I pressed on and the rest of the book was great and filled with valuable techniques and examples. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

An outstanding advisor with an outstanding book.......2003-03-01

Doug Fabian has had a profound influence on my life. I have been a subscriber to his newsletter since 1991 and have read virtully everything he has written. It is with much credit to his advise and wisdom that I have achieved my financial goals. Unlike the overwhelming majority of investors, I actually have a gain in my investment portfolio since the current Bear market, the worst since the Bear markets of the Great Depression of the 1930's, began in March 2000. (At the time I am writing this review, we now are at the end of February 2003.) Before anyone reads any other book, especially books on the topic of personal finance, people should read this book. I highly recommend this very readable and practical book.

Very worthwhile investment advice!.......2003-01-09

I've been a Fabian follower for the past 25 years, following Dick Fabian's newsletter until Doug Fabian took over his father's newsletter business in 1991. They both share the same investment philosophy, and I'm thrilled to be out of the market right now, as a result of Fabian's plan. Having read both books, Maverick Investing is very different from his father's "Mutual Fund Wealth Builder," particularly in the areas of Exchange Traded funds, which is definitely worth the price of the book. Also, the in-depth information on 401(k) investing is probably the most useful advice you'll receive in the marketplace today, answering virtually all the questions you have about 401(k)'s, and explaining how the use of tax-deferred vehicles can make you wealthy at retirement. This is a must-read, particularly for those who are looking for the next bull market, and early retirement.

Give credit where credit is due!!!.......2002-01-22

I was furious after reading the 1st half of this book. This book is BLANTLY a repacked version of his father's book "The Mutual Fund Wealth Builder". He doesn't really give credit where it's due. In the Acknowledgments he states he couldn't have done it on his own and stated his father made contributions...this is utter crap...HE made minor/almost trivial modifications to his father's system and calls it his own. First of all, his father's book explains the system better. The first half of this book will make you wish he never heard the word Maverick because it is used in every other sentence. Actually, he got the word "Maverick" from his father's newsletter- The Maverick Advisor Newsletter. Ever read a book that is 300 pages long and think it could've been reduced to 2 pages of actual info? I know that is most of them but this one is a perfect example. Another thing, I don't think he does a good job of explaining the system because if he did if would be TOO obvious he got it from his father. I'm glad I read his father's book because that helped me understand his poor explanations. So if I hated it so much why did I give it 3 stars? Because, he did 2 things better than his father. He gave better resources to find information on the internet. Secondly, his father recommends a 2 month guideline before determining whether or not to sell a fund but Doug does a good point of bringing up a situation where that might not be a good idea. My recommendation: Buy his father's book, borrow his...skip the 1st 140 pages and then skim the rest...you will literally be able to breeze through many pages since you will already be familiar with the material after reading his father's book and then read the 2 sections I listed above which won't take long. You can buy it if you like but understand his father's book is better written and the original. Good Luck.

Investment Book for All Investors.......2002-01-17

This book is one of the best investment books I have read and I have read many. It is written so the novice investor can develop the knowledge and techniques necessary to be successful, and for more experienced investors to hone their skills. Discussion of Exchange Traded Funds, ETF, is particularly useful, because these relatively new trading vehicles are not widely known nor understood. Doug Fabian's enthusiasm is contagious and helps one to develop a stock trading method that one can be comfortable with and to develop the discipline that is required to be a successful investor.

Wonderful music!.......2003-01-25

Amy Beach's music is emotional and frolicking. This book includes a biography and photos of Amy Beach, with amazing details of her early life of genius talent. The music goes from some of Amy's early, easier works (from age 4 and up!) to her later, very impressive and difficult works. I especially love "Gavotte Fantastique", "Scottish Legend", and "Menuet Italien". There are a number of duets included in this book, too, some of which are beautiful. They're all interesting. I believe she knew Edward MacDowell, so if you enjoy his music, you may enjoy the music of Amy Beach.
