Book Description
Originally published in 1909, this biography by Isabel Wallace recounts the life of her adoptive father, the little-recognized William Hervy Lamme Wallace, the highest-ranking Union officer to fall at the battle of Shiloh.
Born in 1821 in Ohio, Wallace and his family moved to Illinois in 1834, where he was educated at Rock Springs Seminary in Mount Morris. On his way to study law with Abraham Lincoln in Springfield in 1844, Wallace was persuaded by local attorney T. Lyle Dickey, a close friend of Lincoln, to join his practice in Ottawa instead. Wallace eventually married Dickey’s daughter, Martha Ann, in 1851.
When the Civil War broke out, both Wallace and Dickey immediately volunteered for service with the Eleventh Illinois, which assembled in Springfield. Wallace was elected as the unit’s colonel; a successful lawyer, a friend of President Lincoln, a generation older than most privates, and an officer with Mexican War experience, he was entirely suited for such command. Wallace was appointed brigadier general for his performance at Fort Donelson, the first notable Union victory in the Civil War. Wallace’s troops had saved the day, although the Eleventh Illinois had lost nearly two-thirds of its men. He then moved with his troops to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, where Confederates launched a surprise attack on the forces of Major General Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh Church on Sunday, April 6, 1862. Wallace, who held only temporary command of one of Grant’s six divisions, fought bravely but was mortally wounded as he began to withdraw his men on the afternoon of the battle. His wife, who had arrived at Pittsburg Landing by steamer on the day of the battle, was at his side when he died three days later. Grant praised Wallace in 1868 as “the equal of the best, if not the very best, of the Volunteer Generals with me at the date of his death.”
Isabel Wallace traces her father’s life from his upbringing in Ottawa through his education, his service in the Mexican War, his law practice, his courtship of and marriage to her mother, and his service in the Eleventh Illinois until his mortal injury at Shiloh. She also details his funeral and her and her mother’s life in the postwar years. Based on the copious letters and family papers of the general and his wife, the biography also provides historical information on federal politics of the period, including commentary on Lincoln’s campaign and election and on state politics, especially regarding T. Lyle Dickey, Wallace’s father-in-law and law partner, prominent Illinois politician, and associate of Lincoln. It is illustrated with fifteen black-and-white halftones.

Book Description
The last decades of the past century have brought relentless progress in molecular genetics, opening dramatic opportunities for modifying human life by gene therapy or by cloning new human beings endowed with programmed characteristics. In this frenzy of new discoveries the names of Cécile and Oskar Vogt, who one hundred years ago envisaged these developments and laid the foundation for modern, genetically oriented neuroscience, have been practically forgotten. This makes most timely the treatise by Igor Klatzo, who, shortly after World War II, spent several years with the Vogts at their Brain Research Institute in the Black Forest, Germany, and then continued his brain research as the Chief of the Laboratory of Neuropathology and Neuroanatomical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The greatness of the Vogts is based both on their penetrating vision of the future for brain research and on the sterling quality of their character, which sustained a "test of fire" during the Nazi years in Germany. Klatzo brings, in addition to the recognition of the Vogts' greatness in pioneering modern brain research, a lively picture of their personalities, which includes their struggles against the rigid rules of society, and against political suppression, the latter associated with the risk of their lives.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting and insightful..........2005-03-29
I recently bought this book as I was interested in finding out the different healing properties of various fruits and vegetables. And I was quite pleased with the setup of the book-basically the book is organized by vegetable/fruit, with each entry including the history of the subject, it's nutritional value, the different diseases,sicknesses,and/or conditions it's known to help, and ways of preparing it properly. I quickly found different juices/veggies/fruits that targeted the conditions I wanted, and I've since incorporated their juices into my routine. I"ve been quite happy with the results in particular with including the following(not all together but seperately and combined with other juices): celery, cucumber, cabbage, carrot, beet, and radish.
One thing I would like to clarify is that Heinerman seems to really encourage blender juicing, either with your own blender, or more importantly with a Vitamix, to really maintain alot of each veggie/fruit's nutritious value by including the pulp. I was very happy with this encouragement, as I own both a Vita Mix and Juiceman, and I personally think the Vita Mix is far superior. But, I do think it's important for the reader to understand that he favors blender juicing over extracted juicing-and as a result, many of his juices call for this type of juicing.
Excellent, Excellent Guide.......2000-05-19
I truly use this book as my juicing reference guide. At first I was disappointed in the structure of the book in that it was listed by vegetable and fruit names. I wanted the standard listing of recipes under the standard categories and boy am I glad this one is not like that. I have other juice books that give me enough recipes to cure anything that ails me. What this book provides is very good info about all the ingredients in a recipe and you can figure out subsitutions in an intelligent manner. This book is worth its weight in gold for that alone. I mean all of us just can't get into parsley now can we. Get this book it's worth every penny.
valuable guide to juicing fruits and vegetables.......1997-04-25
You won't need a juicer to appreciate this readable reference on juicing (and using) a variety of fruits and vegetables. A medical anthropologist and author of other books on the healing properties of foods, Dr. Heinerman now focuses on juicing. After you choose an ailment (or a fruit or a vegetable), you will respect Dr. Heinerman's scholarship in compiling the beneficial uses of juices. Each chapter on a juice (for instance, "Lettuce Juice") documents its botanical history, description, usage and nutritive values. The anecdotes and testimonials provide strong evidence for the therapeutic qualities of fruits and vegetables -- and their juices. Any juicer you buy will get you started with some good recipes, and this text will augment your choices and combinations of juice. You'll soon be juicing every day, and on into the 21st century. Appendices include helpful information on picking a juicer, uses for the pulp by-product, supplemental commercial products, and recipes
worth every cent in saved medical bills.......1997-02-09
This book isn't the easiest to read!!
It is best used as the first line of defense when your not feeling well.
The book is an excellent source of reading up on the basics of juicing.
Don't know what Juicer to buy this book tells you the pluses and minus of all major juicers on the market and no not one juicer will do it all as much as you may have hoped to buy only one product.
I personally recommend the book.

Book Description
The Trellis Restaurant, located in Colonial Williamsburg, is one of the finest and most innovative restaurants in the country today. Now, award-winning chef Marcel Desaulniers shares his original, yet traditionally inspired, recipes in a cookbook that truly captures the informal elegance of the restaurant itself.
With Desaulniers's simple, easy-to-follow directions, anyone can re-create the Trellis hallmarks -- Curried Apple and Onion Soup, Shiitake Mushroom Pâté, Chesapeake Bay Clam Chowder -- that will start off any meal with panache. Go on to enticing entrées such as Smoked Catfish with Country Ham, Grilled Duck Breast with Raspberries and Macadamia Nuts, and Loin of Lamb with Fennel and Curry. Pumpkin and Currant Bread and Black Pepper Brioche are the perfect accompaniments to any meal, and delectable desserts -- Strawberry Papaya Sorbet and Death by Chocolate -- provide luscious finales.
A new chapter -- twenty of the restaurant's most requested dishes -- and a unique feature, "the Chef's Touch," in which Desaulniers offers his secrets and advice, make The Trellis Cookbook the culinary chef d'oeuvre of new American fare -- and the ideal addition to every cook's home library.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overall collection with addition of His Top 20.......2001-02-23
I'm a real fan of Desaulniers. His stuff is solid, well-done and sophisticated in style and taste, but not beyond the abilities of most of us at home. In fact, he targets this stuff for us, even testing on our kind of equipment.
This is another of those seasonal approaches, with recipes and menus provided for the four seasons. Helpful in each recipe is an equipment list as well as my favorite: The Chef's Touch in which he adds advice about preparation and/or service or background on how this dish came about, or substitutions one might use, etc. Basics on equipment, techniques and sources are included.
You can tell that care is taken to aid us who put his talents and creations to use in our own homes. Particularly out of this collection do I enjoy serving the Braised Tenderloin of Beef with Mushrooms, Raisins, Figs and Red Wine.
feedback from a former employee.......1999-07-16
First, I admit I used to work at the Trellis for 3 years and loved it. I have the hardcover version of this book but am contemplating getting the paperback just for the gazpacho recipe. Nice recipes and I like Marcel's "Chef's Touch."
Some of the best desserts you will ever taste, great breads, and nice game recipes. They might be for the more adventurous and might be a bit time consuming, so my advice is to take a trip to Williamsburg and taste the real thing!

Mothers, unsure how to respond, may find themselves reacting with an array of negative emotions: anger, defensiveness, depression. Psychologist and mother Debra Whiting Alexander offers real-world solutions to the age-old problem of maintaining the delicate balance of this relationship. Drawing on detailed interviews, she offers specific strategies for handling conflicts and power struggles, bolstering a daughter's self-esteem, and coping with problems.
