Book Description
A tremendously moving and literate story of the Civil War based on letters, regimental histories, newspaper stories, and additional writing. Jacob Ritner answered Lincolns first call for 75,000 men in April 1861. After serving a three month term with the 1st Iowa Infantry, Jacob acted as a recruiting officer for the Union Army, and then re-enlisted in the 25th Iowa Infantry. He participated in most of the major campaigns of the Western Theater, including Wilsons Creek, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, Shermans March to the Sea, the occupation of Savannah, the Carolinas campaigns, and the Grand Review in Washington, DC.
He was in the first brigade that entered Columbia, South Carolina, that led to the removal of the Confederate flag and the raising of the US flag over the state capitol building.
Emeline remained in Iowa, raising four small children and managing the family farm. Her letters provide a description and stories of a small town in Iowa during the Civil war, of the women who stayed behind and dealt with the tragedies of losing husbands, brothers and fathers to the war.

How it really was during the Civil War.......2004-08-05
As I read this remarkable volume I felt I was being transported back to those Civil War days, telling me how it was both in the war zone and back home in Iowa. Jacob Ritner is a remarkable figure, inspiring admiration and eminently worthy of emulation. His accounts of the battles he was in are vivid and immediate, and the editor of this volume has performed a most worthwhile service in resurrecting from the buried past this correspondence to inspire all who value patriotism and fidelity to duty and to one's marriage vow. One cannot but be enriched by following Captain Ritner and his wife thru those perilous years from 1861 thru 1865.
Wonderfully Interesting correspondance!.......2000-08-17
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!. Some times, historical correspondance can be dry. However, these letter are not! They are very readable, offering a interesting insight into the real lives of people during the turbulent era of the Civil War. Charles Larimer has done excellent research and his annotations add to the context of when the letters were written. Highly recommended. I look forward to reading his Scottish Stories from Loch Ness.
Fascinating.......2000-06-30
I am not a reader of books nor a student of the civil war. However, I found this book to be fascinating. The horrors of war and the loneliness of soldiers are universal, and the insights into this particular war and historical era are compelling. It is very easy to read, and is both educational and entertaining. Please give me more by this writer!
Startling insight.......2000-04-13
As an amateur war historian, I find that all too rarely do we see the war on both sides. The hardships of everyday Americans during the Civil War were not only occurring on the battlefield, but in the homes left behind in the cornfields of Iowa. This unique perspective is presented in the heartfelt correspondence between Jacob and Emeline. A rare opportunity to behold the searching meditations of a man gripped by both love, and patriotism.
From the Great-Great Grandson of Lt. Baron H. Crane.......2000-02-26
What a splendid work of Civil War history! Hats off to Charles F.Larimer. I couldn't have imagined there was so much historical data in intimate letters. The details are all here. What trials and tribulations our forefathers and mothers went through to perserve our nation. I now find myself becoming a Civil War buff after reading this book, and it only took me three days! As I read on, I found myself in my great-great grandfather's shoes fighting along the side of Cpt.Jacob Ritner and the boys from the 25th. How involved you become. I enjoyed the little jousting that Jacob and Crane had. Buy it today and enjoy a sentimental piece of Civil War history..........

Book Description
"Cancer! A word generally viewed with fear, a word you hope you never hear from your doctor. Certainly, it wouldn't be a subject we would select to study from the viewpoint of a patient, but, since it has presented itself and since there is a strict "no return policy," we might as well turn it into a learning experience."
Emotionally, the diagnosis of terminal cancer can make what remains of a patient's life unbearable. Tom Bintliff, the author of four other books and a cancer patient, believed that there was a way to overcome this. He strived to make every moment count, and while there were some hard times, he succeeded. During this time, he accomplished countless goals, including the writing of this book: his testament to the fact that it is possible to continue to get the most out of life, even when facing a life-limiting illness.
A native to South Dakota, Tom Bintliff is survived by two children, six grandchildren, and his wife, Carolyn.

Great help!.......2007-06-27
I am suffering through my 2nd miscarriage and this book has really helped me just cry and let it out. I have felt very alone and misunderstood dispite the people around me but then I read this book and felt like someone else knew my pain. I would highly recommend getting this book if you are suffering a loss.
A must have for women who have suffered a loss!.......2007-04-24
This was an amazing book. I recently suffered a miscarriage and really needed to hear stories of women who had gone through what I had and survived. This is a fantastic book filled with good emotional information about grief and loss but really the best part of this book is all the personal stories from families who have experienced a miscarriage. I also really appreciated that there wasn't a lot of religious discussion in this book. Really a fantastically written book.
Best Book on Miscarriage.......2006-04-29
I bought this book after my third consecutive miscarriage. I bought three other books and this book was by far the best and the most helpful!! Reading this book is like being in a support group with many other women who have had miscarriages. It made me feel okay to feel crazy, lonely, isolated, angry, hopeful. I have done a lot of reading on miscarriage and this book really helped me to understand why women who miscarry grieve so deeply. If you are even reading these reviews, you NEED this book!
Excellent.......2005-09-14
I am really loving this book, I recently lost my baby at 10 1/2 weeks gestation, and wanted a book to help me through my grief. This book is helping me move through it. I feel supported, understood, and allowed my feelings. It feels like a good friend.
Validates our grief and helps us to heal.......2005-08-02
This book is specifically about dealing with the grief of a pregnancy loss in the 1st trimester or early 2nd trimester. The experiences and emotions of a hundred women are presented in their own words, with extensive commentary by the two authors, who give insights into all the factors that can complicate our grieving and interfere with emotional healing after a miscarriage.
I have suffered two miscarriages at 11-12 weeks. I came across this book after my second loss and found it immensely helpful in working through the unresolved emotional issues that were blocking my path to full expression and understanding of my grief. The book became almost like a friend or companion who understood how I was feeling and stayed with me as I worked through my grief.
If you have suffered a pregnancy loss, you will find so much to relate to in these pages, as well as reassurance that all your feelings (however dreadful) are a normal part of grief. It also suggests ways of working through the grieving process, expressing what you feel, and commemorating a baby who you loved with all your heart even though you may have been deprived of the chance of ever seeing it, touching it, knowing its sex or feeling it move inside you.
A book which validates our grief and helps us to work through it towards healing.

I am a wannabe chef and this book expanded my list of thing I can make for guests. I recommend this book to everyone who likes to cook. The front of the book explains all of the ingredients and techniques, and the back of the book puts it all together. The food is wonderful. I had a blast looking in the asian markets for the ingredients.

MY FAVORITE DESIGNER.......2007-05-02
As a fan of all things pretty from Brenda Walton, I found this book "as a must"! In a busy life, scrapping is great therapy! My new book is a true inspiration and guide for upcoming projects!
A Beautiful Book Brimming with Inspiration!.......2007-03-26
This book is a must have for every serious scrapbooker who desires to create elegant, charming pages that make family photos into works of art. Brenda's ideas are top notch and do not include the overly fussy and corny pages many "pro" designers are publishing in their books. Click "Add to Cart" and wait with anticipation as this treasure makes its way to you!
AS GORGEOUS AS ALL HER PAPERS, ALBUMS & EMBELLISHMENTS!.......2006-12-01
Brenda Walton has completely captivated me with her stunningly beautiful, wistful and tender line of products for K&Company. How wonderful to have this handy reference from which to borrow layouts and ideas for a wide variety of projects. I am currently building an all Brenda Walton album and sometimes find myself misting up in the craft aisle as I select elements to add to my pages. This book is a bargain at three times the price. You won't be sorry.
(I believe that the reviewer who gave the book only one star in fact meant to give it four stars, but accidentally clicked only one. Please read her review and the comments. I have reported this to Amazon as problematic and hope that the review will be either amended or removed completely.)
Great Book.......2006-09-16
I love this book. I would have rated it 5 stars except that I was a little disappointed that not all of the templates were given for the frames used on her pages. Over all though, the book has been one of my favorites.

An excellent, up-to-date textbook........1999-01-11
This book is much improved over the old Howard/Crompton or Deppe texts. It is very apparent to me that the author has thoroughly researched his topic area. His emphasis on active financing rather than just budgeting is something which very much attracted my immediate attention. A few years ago, I took an independent study course on partnerships from Dr. Wilbur LaPage. Much of what Dr. LaPage was teaching about can be found in John Crompton's new book.

Nellie May Rowe: conceptual art and transcendental imagery.......1999-03-01
In January I visited New York City for a few days. One night my friend and I happened to walk past the Museum Of American Folk Art, and saw something going on inside that involved wine and cheese. We took the bait, paid our admission/donation and joined the tour of the exhibit, which to our tremendous enjoyment, was the artwork of Nellie May Rowe,. The tour was given by the author of this book, Lee Kogan. Not only was this most definitely one of the best things I ever did on the spur of the moment, but the book is one of the nicest things I ever purchased on impulse.
Nellie May Rowe's art combined with Lee Kogan's insight make for a powerful and strangely personal experience. We are given mystifyingly beautiful portraits of a woman's inner life and outer circumstance. The images embrace and thereby transcend the small human details that , by the nature of the beast itself, exist to be integrated into what I believe is the creation of real magic. Real magic doen't take shortcuts.
Lee Kogan graciously signed the book for my daughter, saying that Nellie May Rowe's energy, spirit and marvelous art inspire us all, and this is certainly true: If I may be so bold as to take a quote from the book, from the writings of James Baldwin: "..go back to where you started, or as far back as you can, examine all of it, travel your road again and tell the truth about it. Sing or shout or testify or keep it to yourself; but know whence you came"
Yeah. What he said. Anyways, do right by yourself, get your own copy because I'm not gonna be lending out mine anytime soon!

Comments on Londraville's TOO LONG A SACRIFICE.......2000-11-28
TOO LONG A SACRIFICE is an admirable model of the editing of literary works of importance. The editors' knowledge of the subjects and their place in history (political, art and otherwise), the care with which they present the text, and the extensive and informative notes which clarify persons and events mentioned, are impressive. However important Quinn may be, my impression of him is not very positive. He seems to be, in spite of his status as a patron, protector and promoter, an opportunistic user of people. He appears to be communicating primarily as an effort to elicit responses that will have future literary value - he is writing with an eye to posterity's perception of him - he is less interested in the person than in the person's observations, statements and assessments. His words seem disassociated from a human, humane interest in his correspondent. While a degree of personal reserve may be expected, his reserve seems cold and calculated. I felt this strongly in the earlier ON POETRY, PAINTING AND POLITICS (The Letters of May Morris and John Quinn) {Janis Londraville's previous work on Quinn}. Mrs. Londraville's scholarly and graceful editing is wonderful. She does not intrude her assessment of the man into the book, making it possible for me to dislike him all on his own! I recommend both these books for all readers interested in the linked worlds of Irish history, literature and tragedy, seen through the filter of a careful, American, would-be Walpole.
An important contribution.......1999-08-19
TOO LONG A SACRIFICE is an essential guide to Irish arts and letters as well as an intriguing glimpse into the daily lives of early twentieth century literati. Between the dark wit of Irish American lawyer and art patron John Quinn and the passionate observations of political activist and feminist Maud Gonne, these letters open a window onto a private world where such literary luminaries as Joyce, Pound and Yeats were also friends. Through this collection of correspondence, historian Janis Londraville and SUNY Potsdam Professor Richard Londraville, who both spoke at the W.B. Yeats Society of the Palm Beaches this May (99) in Florida, have offered modern readers a passport into the minds and times of these two influential figures. Whether these letters were written from a train station in Paris, a country house retreat in West Ireland, or a law office in bustling turn of the century New York, I felt as if I was there as Gonne and Quinn corresponded about the effects of war, the possibilities of art, and the hopes of an independent and united Ireland. Since these letters were not penned for personal gain or public perusal, their candor is refreshing, especially as they speak of people who worked only for the blessing of history, not celebrity. That understanding - of how art continues to exist, often at great personal cost, because of some inner dedication instead of adulation - is just one of the many lasting insights from this book. It's an epistolary treat
Interesting letters!.......1999-05-16
Because of my interest in early twentieth century art, I have read some of John Quinn's letters before, and I'm familiar with his biography by Benjamin L. Reid. What fascinates me about this new book of letters is that Quinn seems so interested in and concerned about Maud Gonne, her various interests, and her children. He is usually less sensitive. The notes at the end of the text are another book in themselves, and very helpful to me in my own research about several sculptors, including Gaudier-Brzeska and Brancusi. Although Irish history is not my area of expertise, I liked eavesdropping on Maud Gonne when she wrote to Quinn about the Irish political situation and, especially, about the starving Irish children. I never really understood before what England had done.
Surprising,new light.......1999-05-08
TOO LONG A SACRAFICE casts light on the world in which Maud Gonne, John Quinn, and W.B. Yeats lived and worked. There has been such a proliferation of material about Yeats and his circle that I didn't expect much that was new in these letters. But as I read Maud Gonne's correspondence with John Quinn, I felt for the first time that she was a special individual and not simply a function of Yeats's verse. She writes frequently about Yeats, his poetry, and their mutual friends; but she also writes of her own life, aand of her own ideas abut art, literature, and politics. I didn't always agree with her views, but I was delighted to know, at last, how SHE felt. The editors claim that "the seriousness of Gonne's views is both diminished and enhanced by [Yeats's] poetry" and that "it has become almost impossible for us to see her other than through the lens of his verse." But these letters allow me to hear Maude Gonnes' own voice. She speaks as a firebrand who hates everything English, and yet is also a healer and a humanitarian. (I learned that she nursed the wounded in France during WWI, and she, with Quinn's financial support, fed starving children in Dublin). Quinn was a powerful man, the patron and friend to many of the important writers and artists of the twentieth century. I'm given the impression that he was acerbic at times, temperamental, and perhaps obsessive compulsive. Still, his letters to Maud Gonne are charming and packed with information about famous people he knwe, from Theodore Roosevelt to james Joyce, from Woodrow Wilson to John Millington Synge, from the entire Yeats family to artist Gwen John and Pablo Picasso. The editors are to be commended for their efforts to keep a balance between meticulous scholarship and concern for the non-specialist. I particularly appreciated the useful introductions to eaach section.

These writers go to the essence of their subjects presenting them as human being not just icons of their time. Please check out the other books by these authors who capture others from the Irish connections
