not the best book..........2006-02-15
A book that is ok to read. I think a little more attention should have been paid to the quotes. The quote on page 5 happened at Parkers crossroads. I spent a few hours looking at all my books and online to make sure. I guess that error early on might have made me look at the book in a unfavorable light. I do like other books in the series though.

Civil War generals (as well as quotations about them), and this is the very best of the bunch! Forrest's quotations are the most
colorful and pungent, most readily-quoted and remembered. This is the best value in the series.
Great Book.......2003-07-25
This is a short book of quotes. Many Civil War Buff may be familar with some, and not familar with others.
The Creek Forest was crossing, one reviewer mentioned, is on page 71 of this book. It is taken from Wyeth's book, "that Devil Forrest", and is correctly stated. ( Wyeth rode with General Forrest)
If you like Forrest of Confederate Generals, you'll really enjoy this book.
Disappointing.......2002-10-03
A tiny book of 80 pages that has quotes from Forrest and others speaking of Forrest. Also bits and pieces taken from Forrest's farewell address to his men. With one to three quotes per page, this book could have easily been condensed into an even smaller version. There is also mistakes. An example of this is on page 71 when the author writes that Forrest's rebels were fording "a creek to escape pursuing Yankees", when in fact Forrest was pursuing the Yankees, who surrendered their 1466 men to Forrest's 600.

This book is an excellent resource for those suffering from heart failure or families trying to understand this disease. I highly recommend it for a resource if not reading it in its entirity. Chapter 11 on foods and salt intake is especially helpful if one has the determination to follow good advice! I have been researching several pieces of literature and books regarding CHF.
This book was my first choice. I was not disappointed. The book was in pristine

We learned a lot of useful information about medications and treatments, and what was happening to my husband's body. It gave him some hope when he needed it.
Heart failure survival.......2006-06-28
Although much of the information in this book was given to me at the hospital, it is an excelent review and fills in an abundance of additional stuff. The "whys" and "what to do" and prognosis are given, along with encouragement. It covers the present stage of cardiology and delves into the future advances. Specialized sections, like for caregivers, is indeed helpful. There are directions for getting additional information from books and on the Internet. This is the last additon that Marc Silver intends to write. He states that so much material is showing up on the Internet that a book is not needed. The problem with information on the net is that it is scattered about at different sites, so get the book while still in print. I recommend it.
This book could save your life. .......2006-03-22
This is the best, most informative book on chf that I have ever read. It is easy to understand yet right on the money with its information. Concerning chf, the more the know the longer and better your life will be. My husband survived 21 years with chf,but we had to learn things the hard way, this book makes things so simple to understand...low sodium diets, exercise, and knowlege. Every cardiologist in this country should give this book to their patients when a diagnosis of chf is made...both patients and family members should read it thoroughly. Seriously, if you want to live with heart failure, and you CAN, read this book!! It reads so easily that you can get through it in an evening. The info is so interesting...this is your life that this book is talking about...that you can't put it down. I have so many highlighted passages in my book,it's amazing. Good luck, you can do it and this will help.

spinach flan.......2004-12-09
I gave this book 5 stars based upon my spur-of-the-moment decision to make the spinach flan recipe tonight. I happened to have a bag of spinach, some eggs, and sour cream on hand so I went ahead, using a small pie pan and my convection toaster oven. Inspired, I also added some minced shallot with the spinach and a light topping of feta cheese. However, I suspect that even without my embellishments, the dish would still be absolutely incredibly delicious. Wow. The flan was so good that, along with a glass of white wine, I ate the entire dish -- alone. I have already input the recipe into my computer's recipe archive and I know that I will make this regularly for breakfast and/or the occasional solitary dinner. May the other recipes in this book be as wonderful.

This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever read. The recipes are plain and simple, yet very delicious. This book is great for me, since I've wanted to learn French bistro cooking. Due to my job, I do not have the time to take classes. Several recipes intrigue my college daughter - she is a vegetarian. Laura - you did it again! YUM!
Great for Beginning French Chefs!.......2003-11-02
Bistro's are enjoying a renaissance on the restaurant scene and if the proliferation of new books with Bistro in the title are any indication, home cooks want to whip up some of these French homestyle dishes to share with family and friends too. Just what makes bistro cuisine so special? Ms. Washburn answers that question in her introduction, "...bistro is synonymous with simplicity...It is honest, fresh, and satisfying food...(that) is not expensive, it is not complicated, and it never goes out of fashion." For those of you the least bit familiar with French cuisine, the recipes will be like old friends coming back to share memories, but updated. For those of you just learning about French cusine, this book would make an excellent addition to your library and one that you'll pull out to make a special, easy dish for family and friends.
The book is divided into chapters by course: appetizers, entrées (in the American sense of main course), sides and sweet things. Nothing unusual there, but what is great is that each recipe is on its own spread - a full-page picture on one page with the recipe printed the page facing it. As an added plus, the book lays flat when opened. Each recipe also starts with a small anecdote explaining the history or some other aspect of the dish. For example, in the appetizer section there is a Basque Fish recipe, Ms. Washburn tells us that although France has many fish soups, only this one includes hot chilis. For the Braised Sea Bass with Fennel and Saffron and Harissa, we are told that sea bass and fennel are inseparable in the south and that ingredients such as harissa from the French colonies in North Africa are now found all over France.
When I first looked through the book, I felt it would be a good book to give to a beginning cook. So I showed it to a couple of beginners and we chose some recipes to try. Over the course of about 2 weeks we tried out 15 recipes, all with great success. They included: Chickpea Salad, Mixed Greens with Garlic vinaigrette, Pork Chops with Piquant Sauce, Stuffed Tomatoes, Creamy Potato gratin, Eggplant, onion and tomato tian and Chocolate Hazelnut Cake. All of them were easy to make and the directions easy to follow. We did run into one problem with the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake. I've always found it hard to find hazelnuts here in the U.S. and when you do the skins have to be removed. In the recipe, there were no directions for doing this, but that was a minor problem. The rest of the recipes were all successful and in some cases even looked like the picture!

This book is about biology, rearing and care of young primates, at least that's what the title is refering to. But if you are looking for feeding schedules for youngsters (or color pictures) than this is not a book for you. However it's a good book with lots of info in it. Every chapter in this book in divided in the following subtitles : Species, Status, subspecies and distribution, Sex ratio, Social structure, Breeding age, Longevity, Seasonality, Gestation, Pregnancy diagnosis, Birth, Litter Size, Adult weight, Neonate weight, Adult diet, Adult energy requirements, Growth, Milk and milk intake,
Lactation and weaning, Feeding, Accomodation, Infant management notes, Physical development, Behavioural development, Disease and mortality, Preventative medicine, Indications for hand-reading, Reintegration and References.

This book suggests lovely alternatives to the typical plants that we see so often now in most Northwest gardens. The author suggests many lovely native varieties that will make your garden every bit (perhaps more so) as beautiful than the more common imported varieties. Many nurseries now carry a pretty good selection of native plants. Leave behind what I call highway plants (you know, the ones you see planted by exits) and discover the beauty of Northwest natives!

Finding meaning in suffering.......2001-06-01
Rarely does a book capture the ways that a family can find purpose and forgiveness in the face of cruelty from others. This detailed account of the imprisonment of the father and eventual banishment of the entire family to a rural village in China puts a face on the experiences of educated persons during Mao's rule. In the same tradition as Viktor Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning, the author's descriptions and reflections show the resilience and depth of the human spirit. This book is extremely informative about the Maoist regime and inspiring about the strength of persons to survive and thrive in the harshest of circumstances. One of the best books I've ever read.
A book Reflecting True Character.......2000-11-23
Wow! I was especially impressed with the clarity with which both the husband and the wife wrote. It is written intellectually, yet with readability. Wu and his wife endured sufferings for actions that they were falsely accused of, yet their love for one another and for their family heightened throughout the entire nightmare. Being sent to prison for 30 years for returning to your own country in order to make it a better place is something that few of us could withstand, yet Wu withstood and became a better person for it. This is one of the best books that I have ever read. It inspires the reader to take a closer look at priorities, and leaves the reader with a deep sense of loss for the authors on one hand, yet a deeper sense of gain in areas of life unseen.
Excellent Depiction of Life in Post-1949 China.......2000-11-15
Wu Ningkun's "A Single Tear" is an excellent look at a young Chinese man whose decision to return to China from America after the 1949 Mao Zedong revolution has lasting and potentially tragic implications for both him and his family. Like many Chinese who emigrated to other parts of the world after WWII, Wu believes that China will be able to enter a better, prosperous and independent phase with the new Mao regime. Although quickly disillusioned, Wu and his family remain, subject to imprisonment, deprivation, and humiliation, especially during the infamous "Cultural Revolution" of the 1960s. By the time of Mao's death in the 1970s, the Wu family has been moved -- separately and together -- from city to country and back again, persecuted for their religious beliefs (Christian), and distrustful of neighbors and friends with the constant denunciations that have become standard. This book will show you what I have heard firsthand in China: the destruction of the intellectuals and "old" by a new generation with no sense of the past. Very moving and inspirational.
Wonderful memoir; well painted portrait about Mao's China.......2000-07-06
This is a very well written memoir by a husband and wife, about their life in communist China in the 50's and 60's, in which they survived prison, hunger, separation, to name a few. In one part of the book, she tells about how she was assigned to a job post by the government, away from her baby. Since she wouldn't be able to breastfeed, she had to buy milk on the black market! There were no luxuries such as going to the grocery store to buy baby formula. And yet, she deals with it and copes! That's not the worst of what they had to go through! This couple sets the definition for strength of charactor. Very inspiring and enriching book.
One Very Sad and Disturbing Story that Must be Read.......1999-12-04
"A Single Tear" is the tragic story of a admirable but naive Chinese patriot who made perhaps the worst personal decision possible this century -- choosing to return to China after the civil war ended instead of remaining in the US. The anecdotes of the insanity and chaos that plagued China for the quarter of a century or so from 1950 until Mao's death are gripping and disturbing; If they did not actually occur and were not documented, they would have seemed surreal even in a fictional novel. Ultimate, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and the will to survive when tens of millions did not.
