    Book Description

Born in Philadelphia on December 3, 1826, George B. McClellan graduated from West Point in 1846 before serving in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, McClellan was put in a position of leadership and after a successful campaign in Virginia he was given command of the Army of Potomac, one of the Union's strongest armies. He led the Peninsular campaign with almost 100,000 troops under his command. marching toward Richmond.

Although McClellan was a brilliant administrator who possessed good strategic sense, the record shows that he was overcautious and consistently overestimated the strength of his adversaries, always demanding more men and supplies before undertaking offensive action. In 1862, McClellan disagreed with Abraham Lincoln and advanced on Richmond from the east instead of moving directly, against the Confederates at Manassas, Virginia. Although the Union army was successful during the Peninsular campaign, their failure to take Richmond, the Confederate capital, gave the South new motivation. Dissatisfied with the campaign and McClellan, Lincoln replaced him with Henry W. Halleck as commander-in-chief.

After the defeat of the Union army. in the Second Battle of Bull Run, . he was again placed in active command of the Army of the Potomac. His overcautiousness at the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, led to a draw instead of a Union victory. Because of the heavy Union losses, he was again relieved of his command by Lincoln for the duration of the war.

The Democratic Party nominated McClellan in 1864 as its candidate for president a peace platform, but Abraham Lincoln defeated him. After serving as governor of New Jersey From 1878 to 1881, McClellan died in Orange. New Jersey on October 29, 1885.

      Book Description

1887. And His Relations to It and to Them. The author's account of the Civil War. McClellan, Union general in the American Civil War, graduated from West Point, served with distinction in the Mexican War and later worked on various engineering projects, notably on the survey for a Northern Pacific railroad route across the Cascade Range. Resigning from the army in 1857, he was a railroad official until the outbreak of the Civil War. George McClellan had proven himself to be an efficient organizer with strong personal magnetism. For this reason, and some successes in West Virginia, President Lincoln approved him Major General in the regular army. He was outranked only by General-in-Chief Winfield Scott. He reorganized a disjointed and poorly disciplined army, which gained him the respect and approval of his men. However, his military operations soon became a frustrating series of lost opportunities. He consistently overestimated his opposing forces, and his carefully devised plans were lacking in execution. After the Battle of Antietam, he was ordered to turn over his command to his good friend Ambrose E. Burnside and to go home to New Jersey to await further orders. They never came. He later served as Governor of New Jersey.

Books such as Richard Preston's The Hot Zone thrust the deadly Ebola virus into the spotlight, but they can't match the first-person perspective of Virus Hunter. Author C. J. Peters is an ex-army colonel who has spent his professional life studying deadly pathogens in the lab and in the wild. He spins a drama- and adrenaline-filled true tale of virus hunters, which is gripping despite its occasional tendency to grow verbose and detour into personal history. Peters offers a look at crippling diseases not only through the eyes of a scientist, but also with the perspective of an insider in the defense establishment, painting a chilling picture of the potential of biological terrorism or outright warfare.

                      Book Description

The commander of the Army virology unit that battled Ebola in The Hot Zone--and current director of Special Pathogens at the CDC--teams up with the bestselling co-author of Mind Hunter to chronicle his extraordinary thirty-year career fighting deadly viruses.

Currently the head of Special Pathogens at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, C. J. Peters has been on the front lines of our biological war against hot viruses for three decades in South America, the U.S., and Africa. In Virus Hunter, he recounts his lifelong battle against these deadly and invisible agents--and the all-too-often equally dangerous bureaucratic turf wars that have at times escalated the conflict and exacerbated epidemics. From investigating Venezuelan equine encephalitis and Bolivian hemorrhagic fever to containing Ebola in Reston, Virginia, and the deadly hantavirus in the Southwestern U.S., Peters offers a fascinating array of stories about the clash between biology and bureaucracy--and the threat emerging viruses pose to our species.

Written with bestselling co-author Mark Olshaker (Mind Hunter), Virus Hunter is a first person memoir by one of the leading virologists in the Ebola outbreak and a dramatic complement to the mega-bestseller The Hot Zone.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Autobiography Filled with Travel Adventure, The History of one Man...and the passion for Virus'.......2007-08-14

I decided to read more about C.J. Peters after I concluded The Hot Zone; finding myself infatuated with this semi-mysterious, tropical-shirt wearing military officer and virus researcher. I was fascinated by this man whose experience and research will and has changed history.

Despite the unmatched experience, education and brillance of C.J. Peters intellect, I found the tone of this book suprisingly "down to earth" Peters is clearly a scientist who an experienced mentor. I sensed he does not see how extraordinary his life is; only that he is aware he is a man who has pursued his passion.

Having recently read both The Hot Zone (marburg), and Preston's Demon in The Freezer (smallpox), I felt I comprehended the power of airborne virus'. What I gained from Virus Hunter was just how much research, time and passion it takes for scientists to learn about these diseases. The intensity of virus research and trying to save human lives makes for an extraordinary read, particulary from the first hand accounts of a true virus hunter (I found his character truly translates to an Indiana Jones of the viral world...pursuing his subject deep into Brazil, the Sudan, and Virginia...)

Peters shares experiences including communication attempts with people around the world, and a need to relate to their lives. He wrote of adventures trying to reach rural locations in South America. He also respectfully recounts the stories of other scientists who succumbed to virus' illness, and the need for the research community to see these deaths as something to hold in mind while seeking a cure. Clearly attaching specific individuals (whether lab researchers, or individual unnamed patients who he watched die) as representatives of why cures MUST be found.

The only lull in this book is about 3/4 though the early chapter about the Four Corners outbreak, the initial story was intiguing (and as you will see ties distinctly into the entire theme of the book), however, it did drag. This was the ONLY slow part of this book. The rest was amazing.

C.J. Peters is the kind of scientist you want to sit, and UNDERSTAND what he sees and learns. He can easily communicate with the average person, and with those at the highest level in military and intellectual leaders. I so wish I had such a passionate scientist who has as much respect for women biologists as men; a scientist whose infectious (pun intended) passion raises everyone sense of curiousity about the subject he teaches. I believe more educators with his passion would produce more passionate scientist, and people willing to take on the overwhelming accomplishment of achieving a biology degree at University.

I would strongly, strongly recommend this book to anyone with any sort of interest in biology, disease, virus, or just anyone who enjoys a terrific adventure.

The sharing of his personal details, and the mating habits of top scientists (they date among their own kind...) added a true depth to his storyline.

I found this book utterly brilliant. The clear message is everyone must be aware of the dangers of viral disease, the serious nature of these illness' which are not classified as bacteria...nor parasitic. Also, the tight budgets created for medical research are truly a danger to the future of our health and those of developing nations.

While I was eating dinner the other night, I was deep in Virus Hunter, reading the descriptive details of what Ebola does to the human body. The thought suddenly struck me...I am eating and reading about subcutaneous hemorrhaging without even a blink...

Now THAT is a good book!

5 out of 5 stars Pete the Great.......2005-10-04

Everyone who is interested in life threatening diseases has come upon the name of C.J. Peters, a leading figure in epidemiology for at least 20 years. So, when i saw the book i bought it just to get an insight of the man himself. What i found was an inspiring manifest of how ''the job gets done'', written by a deeply stuborn, sensitive and respectfull scientist. It is not only a fine book on emerging diseases, it is also a call to medics and politicians alike to enlist to one of the most important, yet underated, scientific fields. Don't miss it.

2 out of 5 stars Mildly interesting biography of 3 decades of experience.......2004-01-25

The maps of South America & Africa were confusing - they put a lot of effort into identifying most of the Countries, but many of them didn't feature in the text, so why give the Geography lesson?

The 20 photographs were of some interest, but there was only one photo of a patient with symptoms, and only one of a virus - I wish there'd been more of those and less of head & shoulders like having a meal and daughter's high-school graduation?

Great disappointment - absolutely no Index!

The penultimate Chapter 11 gives a prediction of Avian Flu originating in Thailand - just what we're getting news about this month (Jan 2004) - but this book was published in 1997. Given the age of the book, its probably not surprising that Chapter 12 is very out of date (as in 'wrong') regarding its description of BSE (Mad Cow Disease) & CJD.

Was it necessary that we be told what the wife of the 'ghost writer' does for a living?

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Triller!! (If thats possible).......2003-12-11

                      An excellent book!
This books reads like a thriller as the authors take the reader from one hot zone to another. My appreciation for the bravery and humanity of individuals who do this has increased manifold after reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Only one mistake........2003-08-27

I extremely enjoyed Dr. Peters's book. The only thing that I can argue with him about is in the chapter titled Cochabamba, when he describes Bolivia's geography he makes a mistake. I expect that he got confused, but he said the that the Kollas live in the lowlands of Beni and Santa Cruz and the Cambas in La Paz and the high altitude Altiplano. Well, the truth is that Cambas live in the lowlands of Bolivia and Kollas in the highlands. Otherwise I found the book very good and entertaining. I recommend everybody to read it, but to remember the Camba-Kolla explanation.

1 out of 5 stars The Kind of Problems You WANT to Have........2006-12-19

Poor Johnny. His parents are always taking him to posh resorts in Bali. And then there are the tours of Europe...and the fact that they talk to him like a person and not a drooling Disney-addicted lobotomy patient. Surely this experience will scar him for life. Of course, Johnny attributes his angst to being an only child. Yet, one is willing to wager, that if Johnny had siblings, his woes would still be the fault of his parents and their family planning decisions. Because of course being the child of workaholics with too much money and way too much space on their Visa platinum has nothing to do with his spoiled, disaffected misery.

Seriously, folks, I picked up this book to get an idea of whether or not I want to have a second child. I was trying to educate myself on both sides of the issue. This book offered very little advice relevant to my reality. Maybe if I were, again, a workaholic with too much credit who had waited until I was 56 to start breeding, it would be a different story. The only parts of the book that were relevant at all to a simple prole like me were the bits that were mere common sense, ie, don't ask for your kid's opinion on which marriage therapist to see or antidepressant to put granny on. Other than that, the "sins" are not even feasible as issues for me ("don't buy your kid everything they want" uh no duh, plus I CAN'T!) or were too stupid for words. Like, "let your kid be a kid, let them do kid stuff with kid people. Don't expect them to act like human beings or have complex human personalities and interests." I'm all for letting a tautology be a tautology but dude, I would have killed to be drug along to France when I was a kid.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Only" Guide Out There!!.......2006-06-07

I think I've read every book about only children that has ever been written. "The Seven Common Sins" is by far the most practical, touching and inspiring one that I've read so far. The real life tales that Carolyn White provides, coupled with her wonderful way of expressing her own experience raising her only child, made me feel at ease. It was so comforting to know that there are other people out there who have had the same experiences that I have had! Carolyn provides great, solid advice in each section and I really benefitted from doing the "quizzes." I would recommend this book for only children, parents of only children, and for families in general!

5 out of 5 stars Pratical advice for parents of only children.......2006-05-07

Don't take the title too literally! This is one of the best books on parenting; such great, hands-on practical advice. I view the book as a wonderful parenting tool for families with any number of children. As I read the book, I was reminded of several situations that I have observed in families with multiple children, and the parents "commit the same sins" that you mention in the book. Good parenting requires the same principles no matter how many children are in the home. Also, the www.onlychild.com website is a great resource for handling questions from others on why we have an only child. Thank you for your support and common sense!

1 out of 5 stars the title of the book.......2005-08-10

I have an only child and am always interested in learning more, the categories seem to be the same as what I have already read on. I would not by this book, simply because of the title. I do not think "sins" is appropriate and it is a big turn away to me. Many parents of only children feel inadequate having only one child and to use this in the title just doesn't help much.

4 out of 5 stars Single vegan doesn't want single portions!.......2006-08-22

I find myself doubling the portions in this cookbook, not because they are too small, but because I've come to rely on eating my leftovers for lunch. I am a big fan of meals that keep well in the fridge or freezer - just because I often cook only for myself doesn't mean I'm not busy!!!

I agree with a previous reviewer who did not like the "meal-plan" format...especially since dinner is pretty much the only meal discussed here. There is no table of contents, and the indexing isn't the best. From what I've tried so far, the recipes are yummy.

5 out of 5 stars This book is so great, I had to write a review!.......2004-01-13

I've never come back and written a review on Amazon before, but this book is so good - I just had to! I received the book for Christmas and tried a few of the receipes and loved them. This is my first week of following the "meal plan". The author makes it so easy to do all your grocery shopping and to cook simple, delicious meals. I am doubling everything and cooking for two. So far we have well enough for both of us plus leftovers for one or two lunches. When non-vegans smirk and say "ew, what do you eat?!" I am now proud to rattle off a list of gourmet-sounding recipes that sound enticing to even meat eaters, but are simple to prepare. The book is small (but has a 10 full weeks of recipes) and inexpensive - why not give it a try?

                      2 out of 5 stars i think it's a good idea, but...........2003-12-26

i bought this used at a bookstore because i loved the idea of only cooking for myself and having shopping lists to go from each week, however, i have never cooked from this book because it simply turns me off. the menus don't seem varied enough, plus, i am the type of cook that likes to answer to my cravings and to recipies that make me feel passionate about cooking them. this book does not fit the bill.

                      4 out of 5 stars I've learned something.......2001-06-30

If this book has taught me anything its how to make smaller portions. I came from from a big family and we cooked big meals. However, being a single parent, I had to change my methods or else be subjected to a life long experience of too much leftovers.

I'm not a vegetarian but the recipes are delicious. They are also quick and easy to prepare.

                      4 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-04-23

For the single person or even a couple (just double everything), this is a great cookbook. It has weekly menues for lunch and dinner (5 weeks for summer and 5 for winter) complete with a shopping list in from of each week. This certianly makes meal planning a breeze if it is folowed!! All the reciepts are even in both metic and american measurements.

I am an avid scrapbooker, with many materials to work from, and this book was the least helpful. While cute, and filled some ideas, it isn't very practical for serious scrapbookers. It may be good for beginners to get ideas, but I wouldn't recommend it for the more creative persons.

I love this book. It is full of cute expressions and clipart to use on scrapbook pages or cards. There are many topics to choose from including babies, cats and dogs, and seasons. I only wish it came with a cd so it would be easier to print them from my computer.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great book........2003-10-15

These books are fantastic and great for any crafter. They are a great addition to any craft room and will most certainly help you become more creative.
The possibilities are endless with these books and this book (being the fourth) is no exception.
I don't regret buying this book one bit.

will find answers to a lot of questions about the disease and

plenty of ways to help gain control of it! One of the things

Lance does in this book is to remind the reader that maintaining

get your life together after the diagnosis of diabetes has

knocked it apart. This book can also be of much help to those

who might be at risk of developing the disease too. Who knows

if you read this book and follow its precepts you might ever be

able to keep yourself from getting diabetes. This book is also

a great way for the people in your life who are trying to

understand what you are living with and going through each day

a must for all diabetics and those who care about them. I know

because I am on of the many Type 2 Diabetics out there, and this

5 out of 5 stars This program really works.......2004-05-04

I have Diabetes type II and was lucky enough to get this book, I followed the instructions to the letter, step by step and from the very first week I could tell that it was working.
I felt better physically and mentally, more alert. Slept better, my glucose level was getting better.
When I started the prgram I was taking Glucophage and Avandia, by the 18th day I no longer needed Avandia, my daily blood glucose average was 121 the highest with the 94 the lowest ( when watching my carb intake).

I got to the point that I cut the half the daily dose of Glucophage.
Commitment is the key, reading the book is not enough, you have to decide to DO as the book says.!! Getting into this program is one of the bets things that ever happened to me.

5 out of 5 stars Control is Key !.......2004-04-13

28 Days to Diabetes Control is a great way to learn more about diabetes and get a handle on your own diabetes as well. Lance has illustrated the importance of diabetes and how one should go about dealing with every-day situations. Wheather you are recently diagnosed or someone that has been living with this disease, it is an excellent guide book to gaining better control of your diabetes (Type 1 or 2). I am impressed with the broad range of topics covered throughout the book to help with the success of better diabetes management. If you have not read this book, go out and get a copy. You won't be dissapointed !!

                                Book Description

Navigators vividly brings to life the stories of twelve African American artists who teach music, dance, and visual arts at colleges and universities that have traditionally been viewed as White institutions. In this captivating and moving book, Theresa Jenoure shows that there's a great deal to be learned from the experience of these teachers. She explores their visions and callings as creative artists and how they function in higher education. In so doing, she presents relevant ideas about the development and sustenance of creativity.

African American artists have played a monumental role in the evolution of American culture. Mainstream artists from Picasso to Martha Graham to the Rolling Stones have dipped into the wellsprings and drawn inspiration from the creative expressions of African Americans throughout the nation's history. In informal but profound ways, they have been models and mentors, exerting tremendous leadership in the arts but have had little influence over the formal study of their knowledge in schools.

As the twelve teachers' stories unfold, they share their hearts generously and speak their minds frankly, offering kaleidoscopic glimpses into their biographies. They talk about the various paths that led them to become artists and teachers, honoring special people and incidents that have aided them along the way. They identify some of the ways they became politicized, aware, or even positioned in social and political terms, giving names to forces that have shaped their views on social group membership. These are the stories we need to hear. Their voices resonate powerfully, presenting a rare opportunity to be moved and changed.

Much more than merely an objective look at African Americans and the arts, Navigators is as alive and vibrant as the music, art, and dance it describes. Jenoure includes profiles and riffs to serve as bridges between the chapters. The profiles offer closer looks at four of the teachers; and the riffs, much like highly creative jazz compositions from which the word is borrowed, are interjected between the chapters, helping to merge fact with fiction.

This difficult-to-find personal history of Ireland's fight for freedom and its legendary leader is well worth searching for. Written by a man who was an intimate of Michael Collins and a trusted conspiratorial comrade in the struggle against England, it has fascinating details about the day-to-day operations of a guerrilla war and the nervewracking lifestyle of the on-the-run participants. Beaslai, although a close friend and admirer of Collins, nonetheless gives a relatively objective picture of the man and his leadership, and this account, more than any other I have read, reflects the perspective and immediacy of a real participant in the history-making events it recounts. This sets it apart and makes it a highly recommended read for anyone truly interested in Irish history.

5 out of 5 stars The only book worth reading on Collins, a real gem!!.......1998-02-10

Written in 1924, only two years after Collins' death, this two-volume biography is as enthralling and relevant as it was when first published. Beaslai actually owes his own life to Collins, who planned and carried out his jail-break. This fact however does not cloud his judgement of Collins. This is the authoritive biography of Collins. You can be sure that all of Collins' more recent biographers have a copy! Buy it!!!
