Book Description
Lucy Hutchinson (b. 1620) wrote Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson to "moderate her woe" and to defend her husband against the allegation that he was not a "gentleman." She presents Hutchinson as a creative, generous and kind man, a hero whose just allegiance to the Puritan cause resulted in his ignominious imprisonment and death at the Restoration. In so doing, she writes a moving tribute and a shrewd political analysis of this tumultuous period.

Book Description
Join Deepak Chopra on a wondrous journey. . . "The Path to Love." Philosophical, inspiring, and ultimately very practical, The Path to Love is a book that can change lives as it invites the spirit to work its wonders on the most complex and richly rewarding terrain of all: the human heart.
Customer Reviews:
DEEPAK GOES DEEP.......2007-01-21
Deepak is always inspiring - and backed up by good science and the golden heart. Fascinating and uplifting. I also got a lot out of Harold Klemp's writings on the HU sound - also opening the heart to divine love.
Here's a favorite quote from Klemp on the off chance there's an interest:
"If life's too hard,
try singing HU*. It's a love song
to God. Sing it for ten minutes.
Sing it quietly in your bedroom
so no one will disturb you. Or
if you must, sing it silently inside,
when you're among people. Then
trust God to give you the answer
to help you with your problem."
=\=\=
~ From Wisdom of the Heart, Book 2 by Harold Klemp ~
(*HU sounds like the word "hue"; you can simply close your eyes
and sing it gently, over and over.)

Comments from the spiritual reviewer.......2003-04-21
Chopra tells us "there is a fundamental mystery to the soul, that its integrity is not violated by merging with another person. The blending of two spirits brings more to the union than each person started with." (pg 158) This idea is thousands of years old, predictable, and still very popular. But if spirit is already whole, perfect, and needing nothing, how could it be made more perfect by merging with another? Chopra further asserts that "when they are fully committed in love, the husband sees God in the wife and the wife sees God in the husband." (Pg 160) Yet for many people romantic relationships distract from and substitute for God. This fundamental problem is not addressed.
Even more importantly, Chopra does not directly explain how to deal with the presence of hate in the mind. As we all know from our own first-hand experience, there is nothing quite like a close personal relationship to bring out disillusionment and hatefulness. From a spiritual perspective, the path to love must be strategically and relentlessly concerned with the undoing of hate in the mind that we all hold for self and others. It is only by transcending or transmuting hate that we are able to know self as a loving being and to extend unshakeable love for others.
The bottom line: Chopra presents a complicated and confusing message about love which makes it difficult to get reading traction. The Spiritual Reviewer gives it an overall score of 3.4 on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high).
Full of insights about the Self, Love, and relationships.......2003-02-25
Being unfamiliar with the writings of Deepak Chopra when I first got this book, I didn't think, judging by the size of it, that it would take me that long to read, or that I would have any trouble understanding some of the concepts that were presented to me. Boy, was I wrong. This book is so full of knowledge that you will have to read it a couple of times to get the full understanding of what the author is saying. Not that this is by any means a bad thing. I have been reading the Conversations with God series on and off for about five years now, and every time I read it I learn something new. It is quite similiar with this book. Like anything, though, you have to approach it with an open mind, otherwise the overall message of the book will be lost. Still, it provides many unique insights into what love actually is, how to attain bliss within a relationship, and several meditations that will help you achieve what the author is talking about at the present time. For instance, when talking about how the ego influences needs within a relationship, a meditation will be presented to you whose purpose is to try to chip away at the ego.
Again, this book is full of information, and will probably keep you busy for a while. Learning these concepts takes a while, but once you get them, you will most likely see a change in your life, relationships, and viewpoint of what love actually is. I know I did.
Journey of Self into the Path of Love.......2003-01-05
This book should be mandartory to read. Chopak walks us through a light that we all have within us but so few of us truly find. A Path of Love is not a religious book nor self help, in my opinion. It is a philosophy that we all have yet many of us tread the earth feeling lost. Love and spirit joining with the centre of our beings...our hearts.
The East-West path to Love.......2002-05-22
A wonderfully healing book combining Western psychological insight and Eastern spiritual wisdom to unlock and unblock the heart and overcome the mental and emotional obstacles to manifesting soulful, spiritually loving relationships and sustained passionate romance that can last a lifetime.
Good exercises and step-by-step guidance to discovering and unblocking your true feelings and looking within your own heart and soul to find your "Path to Love".

Book Description
At last, creme brulee has been demystified. Debbie Puente has taken the complexity out of making this delicious delicacy, and has compiled 70 irresistible recipes that include a wide variety of silken and sinfully rich desserts, as well as some unexpected savory recipes guaranteed to surprise and delight the palate.
Customer Reviews:
I Really Want to Like This Book Better, But I Can't.......2007-06-02
I love creme brulee, but I was a bit dissapointed with this book. I was also disspointed by the author, Mrs. Debbie Puente, since I love her other book, Elegantly Easy Liquor Desserts.
First of all, the book is very small in size, making it very unpractical. The layout of the book is difficult as well, being that there are only two chapters; The Basics and the Recipes.
In the Basics Mrs. Puente goes over cooking methods for creme brulee, ingredients, equipment and techniques. This is all listed in the table of contents, which is more like an index.
In the Recipes chapter, Mrs. Puente starts with two traditional creme brulee recipes, one for baked, and one for stirred.
There is then six fruit recipes, which are just variations of her classic creme brulee recipe. She then has twelve liquor variations, but I hardly count them as seperate recipes either, since again, it's just added different type of liquors to the classic recipes. All of the different variations are listed seperatly in the table of contents, making it even more like an index.
The book goes on like that, with apparently no logic to the order of the recipes, making it quite confusing for finding a specific one. Each recipe is listed seperatly in the table of contents, along with any additional recipes needed, i.e. crusts and sauces.
Some recipes included are; Lavedar Creme Brulee, Eggnog Creme Brulee, and Lemon Custard Creme Brulee.
There are also some savory recipes, including Sweet Corn Creme Brulee and Garlic Creme Brulee. There is also a recipe for Ginger Chile Creme Brulee, which is mixed in with the savory recipes, although Mrs. Puente's description of it is sweet, it only makes it more confusing to find it mixed in with the savory recipes.
The book abruptly ends with the last recipe, and lacks an index. I believe it would of been better to have the book seperated into chapters; i.e. the basics, classic creme brulee and variations, sweet recipes, savory recipes, accompiements, and a chapter for misc recipes, like the Chocolate and Blackberry Tart and Crossiant Pudding.
The recipes themselves are good, but the layout of the book makes it difficult to use. There are a few nice photos as well, luckily the ones for the more complicated recipes, like the Stacked Banana Creme Brulee Tostada, are included.
If you like Creme Brulee!.......2006-07-25
One of my all time favorites for dessert, after a fine dining experience. I have enjoyed Creme Brulee, Flan, custards of all description all over the dining world, and this little gem of a book has captured ALL of the varieties known to the culinary world. I can hardly wait to get my eggs, creams and such together to start experimenting with the many techniques and ingredients that are suggested in this little book. Congratulations Debbie on a masterpiece!
WONDERFUL addition to the cookbook collection.......2005-01-21
If you LOVE Creme Brulee and want to make it yourself - this is a great cookbook! This book is very small - and fits nicely on my cookbook shelf.
The recipes: From the classic creme brulee to the more exotic recipes including Fruit or Liqueur variations of creme brulee. I've already tried the classic recipe and it is wonderful.
There are some other "unique" creme brulee recipes, but that just opens the door to try new and creative ways of making creme brulee (example: Sweet Corn creme brulee or the Red Bell Pepper Creme Brulee).
The book also includes a section on cooking methods, equipment needed, ingredients, etc to make it easier for the novice.
Overall a great book and a great gift for a Creme Brulee lover! If you buy it as a gift - you may want to include other items to go with it such as the Williams Sonoma Creme Brulee kit complete with the torch and small dishes for serving. I believe you can buy all those separately on Amazon.com as well.
This book is really 5 years old?.......2003-06-15
The author was a bit ahead of her time with the popularity of creme brulee being at an all time high in the U.S. (The pub date is 1998.)
I had creme brulee for the first time just a few weeks ago. I had heard of it, but had no idea what it was. I came home, did a internet search, found the book, and also found out it's such an easy dessert to make at home.
Good Book, Great Pictures.......2003-05-06
It was a very good book that presents a number of fine examples on Creme Brulee. The photos are great, and the recipes seem easy enough to follow.

Book Description
Biodiversity, during the past few years, has become a "buzz" word, as if this were a brand new concept. The word appears in the news, on television, in advertising, in grant proposals, particularly for tropical studies because it is in the tropics that the terrifyingly rapid extinction of plant and animal species and their ecosystems are threatening the earth's ecology. Hundreds of species are being exterminated before they even become known to science.
The natural history repositories themselves, especially those housing the primary collections of a region or major political unit, have much to answer for in this crisis for not articulating their importance and value to research. They also have various responsibilities to their many classes of users. It has been our aim at the University of Colorado Museum to provide catalogs and regional taxonomic handbooks in order to develop a literate public and to increase the value of the collections to amateur and professional students of the flora and fauna. We don't generally refer to our work as studies in biodiversity. A much older word is floristics, the systematic study of floras, and faunistics, the study of faunas. We are proud of the fact that, through this work, the University of Colorado Herbarium has done much toward interesting the public in the flora of Colorado, and in providing the necessary documentation of the flora by building a comprehensive collection for future studies.

Book Description
Pinks, like carnations, are members of the genus Dianthus. They often bring to mind images of cottage gardens, with flowers on long stems flopping over stone paths, but they are quite versatile and can be used in containers, raised beds, alpine gardens, and in modern gardens requiring stronger or more vibrant colors.

Book Description
In the Philippines, a dramatic increase in labor migration has created a large population of transnational migrant families. Thousands of children now grow up apart from one or both parents, as the parents are forced to work outside the country in order to send their children to school, give them access to quality health care, or, in some cases, just provide them with enough food. While the issue of transnational families has already generated much interest, this book is the first to offer a close look at the lives of the children in these families.
Drawing on in-depth interviews with the family members left behind, the author examines two dimensions of the transnational family. First, she looks at the impact of distance on the intergenerational relationships, specifically from the children’s perspective. She then analyzes gender norms in these families, both their reifications and transgressions in transnational households. Acknowledging that geographical separation unavoidably strains family intimacy, Parreñas argues that the maintenance of traditional gender ideologies exacerbates and sometimes even creates the tensions that plague many Filipino migrant families.
Customer Reviews:
Timely shipping/Excellent Condition.......2007-02-14
Book arrived sooner than expected, in condition just as good as the description
Finally a book that looks on children left behind!.......2005-07-19
This book gives insight into the lives of children who live in transnational households in the Philippines. It illustrates the child's perspective on international migration and trys to show what it means to be a child who is nurtured from parents that do not live in geographical proximity.
Central to Parrenas analysis is her focus on gender in this book. She shows how traditional gender and care expectations influence the experience of children in transnational households and the experiences of migrant mothers and fathers. The author argues that the traditional values of the mother as the 'light of the house' and the father as the 'pilar of the house' confront migrant parents with very different expectations that they need to fulfill in order to live up to their children's expectations. While the father is traditionally responsible for the economic well-being of his family, the mother is the nurturer of the family, her main task is to provide emotional security for her children. Thus, while fathers migrate to secure the financial well-being of the family and in doing so fulfill their traditional gender role, migrant mothers seem to violate their role. Mothers who migrate do not only have to provide material security to their children, but also have to continue to provide nurturing and emotional work from far away if they want their children to accept their migration.
The book is based on in depth interviews which Parrenas conducted with migrant 'children' (young adults, usually in college, i.e. around the age of 17-24) and their caretakers in the Philippines. The book would benefit from a truely anthropological perspective gained through participant observation as the question: do children really live as they say they live remains to be answered. Many children talk about their perspective on their parents' migration as they experienced when younger, or when their parents had left, however, we may not forget that perspectives change over time, thus the book does not provide true insight into the actual life experience of migration when it happens, or in the life of younger children. All that is presented here is retrospection and the experience of young adults whose parents live abroad. Not, as the title might let the reader assume, a children's perspective on migration.
However, considering the fact that the book is unique of its kind and work on children's experiences of migration is rare, the book is a good read for all those who want to learn about the experiences of children left behind.
