5 out of 5 stars Captivating and Honest...Five plus Stars!!!.......2004-05-28

Richard Bates has drafted one of the most captivating WWII stories I have ever set my hands upon. As is so often the case, real life proves to be more interesting than fiction. With his honest, no gloss style, Mr. Bates had me up till the wee hours of the morning finishing his book, I could not put it down. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for All.......2004-05-12

Having read many historical works, both military and otherwise, I have read none finer than Mr. Bates' piece concerning his service during the Second World War. By employing both vivid descriptions and subtle imagery, Mr. Bates successfully engrosses the reader in the events that transpired around him sixty years ago. Mr. Bates also holds something that many historical authors lack: ACTUAL WRITING SKILLS! His writing style is every bit as polished as his content is absorbing.

While those interested in WWII should definitely give this a look, this is a book that anyone would enjoy having. Not merely a memoir, Mr. Bates shows us the end results of the most dramatic changes a young man could undergo. This is a thoroughly impressive achievement, and offers readers a step back in time to a point that's best not forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty and informative.......2004-05-11

Its always interesting to hear about the war from the soldier's point of view. And the saga of the Marauders in Burma is one of the most harrowing of the war. Fascinating all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars Great storytelling!.......2004-05-10

Mr. Bates has truly captured an exceptional experience. And he tells it in a vivid and insightful manner. While this takes the reader back many decades, the author's adventures and lessons could not be more current -- and important given today's world situation.

4 out of 5 stars Author's Comments.......2004-05-09

This book is the story of an eighteen year-old who entered service in 1943, went through infantry basic training, and wound up being sent to Burma as a replacement to Merrill's Marauders in time for the siege of Myitkyina. It was written because my wife, Joyce, persuaded me to write my experiences for our six children, as I had not talked about my combat experiences except to some high school history classes.

I stayed with my battalion through two campaigns in Burma, the orth Burma and Central Burma campaigns. Our battalion was incorporated into the 475 Infantry Regiment, a part of the Mars Task Force. I pull no punches in giving the enlisted man's (worm' eye) view of infantry combat.

    Book Description

Millions of Americans try drugs or talk therapy to relieve depression and anxiety, but recent scientific studies prove certain alternative treatments can work as well or better-often bringing on a cure. In this extraordinary international bestseller, award-winning psychiatrist and neuroscientist David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., presents seven natural approaches, each with proven results, that together form a treatment plan that builds on the body's relationship to the brain, yielding faster, more dramatic, and permanent changes. People who want to leave suffering behind now can live joyful, happy lives.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent information and examples.......2007-06-01

This is a great book on depression, stress and anxiety. I had a little "baby blues" after my first child was born, so I checked this book out from the library. I liked it so much that I bought it for reference and to lend out to my friends and family. It is full of very good information on depression, and the examples are very interesting. It reads slowly at first because it is so dense with information and new ideas, but if you can get through the first 100 pages, it moves a lot faster. It seems like we all know someone who suffers from these problems, and we all have them ourselves from time to time. I recommend this book without inhibition to anyone interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars the instinct to love this book...........2007-05-25

Reading this book, reiterated a regimen I once used to follow. Taking fish oil, (as one of the procedures). Could not believe how effective it was. Here I am on one of the worst days of my menstrual cycle (usually) day 27, smiling, relaxed, and totally happy, without a care in the world. So unusual is that for me. This book has a few other solutions such as excercise and acupuncture, and one of them is bound to work for you as well. Thanks David Servan-Schreiber, for writing this book!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but slightly impractical.......2007-05-04

I really enjoyed reading this book & bought it for my nephew who is studying psychology, but I wonder if you would ever find a practioner of some of these methods?

Overall a good read to make you look at current psychiatric treatments from a different perspective: is there a better way than Prozac?

5 out of 5 stars The Instinct to Heal.......2007-04-10

So gratifying to read that science backs up much of what some of us have been doing for many years. Easy read for a sometimes complex subject.

5 out of 5 stars Opening to our healing powers.......2007-01-12

Having been aware of a life threatening illness for more than 15 years, comlementary therapies have been healing and empowering. Aware that we find our own path, but that it is enhanced when we are open to hear others, I have been drawn to many teachers and books, taking what resonates with me. I normally don't initiate others; interests, but if they want to know more about me, I share that. In the case of "Instinct to Heal", it is a book I am directing and giving to others, as i do with "Love, Medicine & Miracles". It is not a bookd only for those confrtoning depression.

    Book Description

Recent discoveries about the emotional brain show we can heal naturally from stress and depression. Award-winning psychiatrist and neuroscientist David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., presents seven methods for faster, more dramatic, and permanent results for patients who want to leave suffering behind and live joyful, happy lives. The methods presented in this book, taken from case histories, have all been proven to work in clinical tests. They are based on the self-healing mechanisms of the emotional brain, which controls the body, as opposed to the cognitive brain, which manipulates symbols and language. Dr. Servan-Schreiber considers the influence of the heart upon the brain, explores the use of EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing) to recover from trauma, and explains how to reset your biological clock to avoid symptoms from seasonal depression. We learn how the biochemistry of touch and love can heal emotional wounds, and we also learn how to use acupuncture, nutrition, and exercise to control our moods. An international bestseller, this is the first book on the market to answer the public's questions about the new alternatives to conventional psychopharmaceuticals, as well as traditional talk therapy. By reprogramming their emotional brains, people struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression can rediscover the balance and well-being needed to transform their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The CURE for depression.......2007-03-20

I used to be severely depressed and non-functional for many years. I discovered on my own that Nutrition is the most important thing to cure depression. It's especially important to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. So learn a lot about nutrition! The second thing is to deal with your psychological issues. I recommend reading many, many self help books until your psychological issues are all resolved. I am 100% cured of depression now and very busy running my own business! And I did it all myself by eating very healthy food and reading many great self help books!

Drugs and talk "therapy" are NOT the answer. THEY DON'T WORK!!! THEY CURE NOTHING!!! They only make MONEY for the psychiatrists and psychologists! Books are SO MUCH better than worthless "therapists" that just sit there uselessly and listen to you talk and refuse to answer questions or give advice. These people are only interested in making a living! If they cured you, then they'd stop making a living, wouldn't they? So it is in their best interest NOT to cure you! And I have found in my experience that they truly do NOT want to cure you, they have no intention of curing you, and they expend no effort in looking for any cures!

3 out of 5 stars interessant mais lacunaire.......2005-05-20

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fascinating and well-researched information.......2005-04-14

I tend to be a bit skeptical of self-help books because I have seen so many sloppy "new-age" versions, but this one is definitely on a different plane. Using the workings of the limbic (emotional) brain as his organizing principle, the author covers the therapeutic effects of diverse topics, from acupuncture, exercise, diet, light therapy, enhancing communication skills, and community service, to the lesser known practices of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and cardiac coherence. All of the chapters are very well presented with generous reliance on scientific information and studies, so that even being a skeptic accustomed to picking apart scientific literature, all the approaches struck me as at least worth exploring. Because many of these therapies are inexpensive, take time to explain, and are not capable of being patented, the business and medical establishments tend to underplay them. Many a time I have gone to the doctor for some problem or other, and left with a prescription for a medication that gave me side effects worse than the underlying condition. If this book were taken to heart, many people who go to their internist with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and pain, would get a prescription to exercise and meditate, instructions on how to eat more beneficially for their brain chemistry, and advice on how to reduce interpersonal conflicts. Even if you're not depressed (I am not and bought the book for someone close to me), it is a fascinating and rewarding read, and suggests many ways (some extremely simple) in which we can enhance the quality of life for ourselves and those around us.

5 out of 5 stars First Book To Help Me.......2004-11-25

I have been battling depression (aka: The Big D) for over two years - since I was riffed - and this is the first book to actually help me. A lot of the books on depression seemed to be too academic. Or they focused on somebody else's depression. This book really talked to me. There are valuable suggestions, lots of practical advice, enough experimental data to make it sound like it might actually work for me, and no preaching. I highly recomend it to anybody who is fighting depression or knows somebody who is.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, alternatives that I can live with.......2004-07-23

Dr. Servan-Schreiber walks you through various, alternative methods for dealing with depression. He explains everything in easy-to-understand language without talking down to the reader. He combines common sense approaches such as nutrition, exercise and meditation with more state of the art methods such as EMDR, dawn and stimulation therapies. He also makes a solid case for acupuncture, which I've always believed was great for alleviating some of depression's more stubborn symptoms. I recommend this on my Depression site at BellaOnline and just had to put my two cents worth in here. Buy this book!

3 out of 5 stars Good Food but a little bland and not that exciting.......2001-01-26

Comfort Food in the title enticed me to try this, plus the raving about her popularity in Britain spreading to our parts as well.

Trying several of the recipes, I found them to be somewhat basic, bland (except for the Thai inclusions). I loved the Black Bean Chili with Avocado Salsa. But most of the time if I rummage through this one, I'm reminded of similar recipes juiced up by other cooks. Realize for some this approach might be ideal and this would become a solid favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to brighten bleak winter days.......2000-10-02

This inspired collection features sophisticated home cooking that will satisfy the heartiest of cold-weather appetites. In addition to tried-and-true British classics updated for today's tastes, it offers many dishes that reflect the enticing and varied flavors of France, Italy, Spain, California, the Caribbean, India, and the Orient. Whether you are a kitchen novice or an experienced cook, you will find this solid, trustworthy volume a welcome addition to your bookshelf.

Also recommended: "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen," by Sonia Uvezian. This definitive guide is a must for lovers of Mediterranean food! Not only does it contain fascinating text and highly original recipes, it is the first cookbook to document the important contributions American and British writers who lived and traveled in the Levant have made to enhance our understanding of the region's cuisine.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-09-05

This book is excellent for its cooking instruction alone! The Perfect Roast Potatoes recipe is great as is the Chocolate Bread & Butter Pudding. If you like this one, try the Summer Collection!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to follow, impresive English cooking - good stuff.......1998-03-10

This book is one of many that the writer has produced. She's very popular in Britain, having presented a number of straight forward but impressive TV programs. This book is very good, with a particularly good chocolate bread and butter pudding (to die for!)

5 out of 5 stars This and all Delia Smith books are wonderful.......1998-01-07

I own most of Delia Smith's cookbooks, gathered on several trips to the UK over the years. They are fantastic. This one in particular deals with winter comfort/warming food - a personal favorite - covering the whole range of recipes, vegetarian and non vegetarian. In addition to starters and main courses, steamed puddings are covered in this book. In the USA they are neglected, but I think that nothing is more wonderful on a cold winter day than a hot pudding to finish a meal - one that has been steaming for hours on the back of the stove. If only more US cookbooks could take as much care presenting complete, consise, and dependable recipes...I find that most US cookbooks just aren't well written and aren't worth the money. All Delia Smith books are well worth owning

especially in light of the overshelming popularity of other British "cookery" writers like Nigella, Jamie, Nigel - all of whom only need to be identified by their first names. Anyone who likes them should immediately become familiar with Delia Smith. She might not be as glamerous or as much "fun" to read, but she is definitely as much fun to cook with, and her food is delicious, her writing is clear, her recipes are well-written and very easy to follow guaranteeing excellent results. This book is a good place to start getting to know Delia!

5 out of 5 stars Good basic book for pet owners with "problem" dogs.......2007-07-25

"Dog gone good" is a cute little book; small, well illustrated and very well written.

This book comprises a series of short chapters, each giving basic information on a different canine behavioural problem: from aggression towards other dogs, aggression towards humans, predatory behaviour, and separation anxiety, to house training problems and car travel issues.

The author uses a friendly conversational tone, and while she does not dumb down the topics, the book is not too technical for the average pet owner to understand. In each chapter she describes the symptoms of the behaviour problem, explains its possible causes, and then describes solutions that can be implemented. The author describes how to recognise when cases are too complicated or dangerous to treat at home, and where appropriate she suggests referral to a carefully selected professional behaviourist.

"Dog gone good" is packed with attractive photographs, and each chapter includes a question-and-answer section, and at least one case study. The author obviously knows her stuff, since the suggestions are sensible and humane, and drawn from a wide variety of training methods. As appropriate for a book aimed at the general public, the methods focus on reward and/or hands-off punishment, instead of physical aversives.

This book would be too basic to interest a professional behaviourist. However, for someone who is inexperienced in dealing with dog behaviour issues and who is suddenly faced with one, this book could be a great help. Using this book, even a complete novice to dog training should be able to diagnose what they are dealing with, understand its severity, and understand the issues and methods that will be involved in treatment - and will be able to make an informed decision about whether to seek professional help.

            Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The title should read "Airbrush Techniques for Plastic Model Kits".......2007-05-26

Actually, this book was precisely what I was looking for. I had purchased
and read several of the other airbrush instructional texts and, while they
were great in their own right, they were too generalized for my needs.
Most of them start out with how to choose an airbrush, air supply options,
etc., but then get a little too generalized as I said. They tend to talk
about airbrush techniques as applied to automotive painting, tattoo art,
            and what-have-you.

The bottom line is if you are interested in learning airbrushing skills
as they apply to the detailing of plastic model kits, THIS IS THE BOOK
YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Not only does the author cover the usual subjects
such as airbrush/air source choices, he goes on to ventilation concerns
and solutions, choices of paints and protective coatings, and other
            areas.

He also presents several project examples as instructions on conceptual
areas such as modeling vinyl figures, weathering (i.e., making something
look like it's been through real-life wear and tear), as well as all those
little details that transform your kit from an overly detailed toy into a
miniature representation of the real item. I was particularly impressed
by the chapter "Adding Dirt and Rust to a '63 Chevy Impala". Here he
describes some very simple yet convincing method of taking a respectable
model kit and making it look like something that belongs in a junkyard,
right down to the grimy whitewalls and windshield wiper streaks.

For myself and others looking to make such transformations, this book
is gold. For others, it's definitely a bit too specialized and will
definitely disappoint, hence my suggestion for the title change.

This book helped me alot with my airbrushing skill. I wish he had written more of the general info as well as some beginner lessons. The projects are ok, I would do a coulpe mabey, but they don't help as much as beginner stroke, and shadowing lessons would have. More info on how to(try) do artwork with a single action brush. All in all a great resource.

While not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, this is a very good reference. The foundation information needed to be successful in selecting and using an airbrush for model work is provided along with a variety of sample projects that demonstrate techniques. I had prior experience with airbrushes when the book was purchased but I did learn some valuable techinques and tips through the book.

3 out of 5 stars More About How to Paint A Model.......2006-09-20

This is an excellent book but the title is a bit deceptive. It spends a little bit of time at the beginning describing airbrushes but does not go into much depth. There is not much on how to select a great tool. Instead it details techniques for painting models. In this, it does a very good job.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn about airbrushing for painting model railroad cars and structures but I know absolutely nothing about them. I still know very little. I did learn some fascinating ways to paint model cars, airplanes and figurines, though.

If you want to learn techniques for doing the actual painting, especially on hobby models, this is a great book. Its illustrations are lavish and clear as are the explanations. If, on the other hand, you want to learn about the brush itself in terms of choosing one and maintaining it, look elsewhere.

I love this book and was disappointed to see that it is out of print. I logged on with the intention of buying a copy as a gift for a friend who has discovered gardening - and to get an additional copy to take me to 2006.

I love the layout that allows for maximum flexibility and the thoughtful prompting of categories.

This makes a great personal garden diary and a wonderful gift idea.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 5 year diary of your garden.......1999-12-17

A wonderful journal to track the progress of your garden. Useful for long-term gardeners and those who are just starting to learn. The pages are layed out so 5 years show on a 2page spread, sections for week 1 of january, week 2 of january, etc. Categories you can fill in include weather, flowers(what was blooming when), shrubs & trees, lawns, vegetables & fruit (when did you plant tomatoes last year? ), greenhouse, and a section for notes. There is room for putting down basic information - this isn't a book for writing down detailed information. It is a reference to use morelike a calendar (when was the first hard freeze in previous years? ) A great book. I haven't been able to find another one like it.

5 out of 5 stars A simple but elegant garden diary for five years.......1999-03-16

Having previously used The Royal Horticultural Society Gardener's Five Year Record Book (now out-of-print), we were delighted with this journal. It is nicely bound with a ribbon to tie it closed. It is divided by weeks, so that one can see "August, Week 1" on 2 facing pages. Prompts for Weather, Bulbs and Flowers, Shrubs and Trees, etc. are listed down the left side. Five columns (for each year) with blank lined spaces are spread across 2 pages. Having used this type of journal before, we have enjoyed seeing what we experienced in weather and blooming in previous years. It is also helpful to remember what was planted. Nice photography and seasonal illustrations throughout. Appendices includes places for yearly summaries, lists of suppliers, notes, etc. A clever envelope holding gridded paper for planting plans is glued inside the back cover. Everyone to whom we've shown this book has exclaimed over it.

Rabitzin Jungreis is a modern day Deborah. She has so much wisdom and insight, but most of all, heart. Truly, that's what it takes to help, a large heart full of compassion, gratitude and the need to help. Her stories are a soothing balm of Gilead to my soul, giving so much inspiration to face the challenges of this world.
Every story is unique and gives us glimpses of the trauma of challenges in modern day marriges. Rabbizin is like a G-dly spiritual surgeon that goes in gently and removes the tumors and abcesses that form in a persons soul, then she gently patches them up and checks in until the person is ready to leave the hospital, cured! What a beracha she is, not only to these people in these stories, but to all who are fortunate enough to open her books and are allowed to drink from the fountain of her love and wisdom.
She is known as the Jewish Billy Graham, she is much more than that she is a healer, a tzadikka of our generation. I can't get enough of her wisdom, and am praying for a chance to meet her, so that I can tell her how much her words have helped me.
This is a must have book for couples, or singles, it doesn't matter. the price is insignificant when a true treasure is found.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to a Successful Marriage.......2006-10-20

If there were ever a book of this genre that could be categorized as the magnum opus of marriage guides, this book would be it. In this warmly written, and most engrossing book, Rebbetzen Esther Jungreis drawns upon decades of experience counseling couples who find themselves struggling with marriage related issues as well as individuals who are seeking to find their soulmate and life partner.

Rebbetzen Jungreis' brilliant sage advice and words of guidance are predicated on the wisdom of the Torah, as she invokes the name and declares the praise of the most powerful and unifying force in any relationship, the Almighty G-d of Israel. As the architect of the universe and the creator of all life, G-d in His infinite wisdom gave us the ability to sanctify the marriage relationship, to transcend the mundane and the physical and to elevate ourselves to a level of holiness that is an essential ingredient to any successful and happy marriage. As the Rebbetzen explains, the words in Hebrew for a man and woman have the same letters, and these letters spell the word fire. Man and woman are analagous to two fires, both consuming each other. The Hebrew letter, Yud, which stands for the name of G-d must be included in the names of man and woman in order for stability, harmony, peace and genuine love to reign supreme.

Rebbetzen Jungreis speaks with the authority of a clinical psychologist and marriage counselor, while imbuing those she counsels with a solid spiritual foundation that will serve as an anchor in the turbulent waters of marriage conflicts. The values and ethos that she imparts are ones that will endure the multitude of challenges that are endemic to everyday life and that are particularly prounounced in marriage. Her compelling and emotionally charged writing style is infused with the greatest of respect for the intelligence and sensitivities of the reader, as she steers clear of preachy or didactic rhetoric, that is all to commonplace in the vast array of books of this kind.

This book is permeated with such a deep and intense level of warmth and love that can only be termed palpable, as its words reach deep into the heart and soul of the reader. Her words are real, as is she, and your soul will be lifted to the highest of levels. It is clear that Rebbetzen Jungreis is a scholar of Torah and her insights into the wellsprings of these sources smack of the kind of profundity and sheer genious, once only reserved for venerable sages.

This book is a must read for all those considering marriage and for those who are experiencing difficulties or problems in marital relationships. It is a book that will have far reaching effects for future generations and should be required reading in all secondary schools. This guide on marriage is timeless, as is the Torah that it is built on and its lessons will resonate for all of eternity.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on marriage, period........2004-10-25

I have read many marriage counseling kind of books, and I am going to say that this is the best one that I have read so far. Rebbetzin Jungreis is known for her timeless wisdom, her way with words, her way of talking straight to the heart, and in this book we see all those qualities in abundance.

"The Committed Marriage" is beautifully written, with much sound advice based on real-life experience. It is both inspiring and practical, in the sense that while she writes about the beauty of a Jewish marriage and how to maintain happiness and love throughout your life, she also brings many practical real life examples.

Everyone has their favorite parts to this book, mine are the parts where she discusses what "Rayim Ahuvim" - beloved friends - really mean, and the story with her daughter and the tickets. I was also very impressed with the many beautiful stories of her late husband, zt'l.

If you must read only one book on marriage - make this your book. It is the only book you will ever need.

5 out of 5 stars The Artist and the Woman - a MUST READ For Many Reasons.......2006-06-27

Author Nancy Reich's scholarship is impeccable, her research, comprehensive, and her passion for accuracy, uncompromising.

This is a completely thorough and compelling biography which reads as smoothly as an easy novel. It is powerful and sensitive; objective and personal. Dr. Reich's depth as a scholar and skill as a writer provide us with a rarely-, possibly never-seen view of this extraordinary woman, Clara Wieck Schumann.

Clara's life was fraught with pain, sorrow, frustration, and self-doubt, and how her genius managed to prevail is nothing short of remarkable. I took pause many times while reading to catch my emotional breath.

Dr. Reich also shares with us her enormous insight into the personalities of ill and troubled husband, Robert, dear friend and confidant, Johannes Brahms, and domineering father, Friedrich Wieck, making sense and coherence of the disjointed facts many of us know regarding these three very important men in, not only her life, but in the life of Nineteenth Century European music.

Clara Schumann was a truly astonishing figure - both as an artist (prolific composer, formidable virtuosa - some say Liszt's equal or superior), and as a woman (dedicated wife, mother, daughter, loyal friend). This book takes a major step toward giving a just measure of recognition to this awesome woman. It contains wonderful photos, sketches, pastels, and paintings - some, particularly of Clara alone, are especially moving. Her expressions tell nearly as complete a story as the text.

Though replete with musical discussion and analysis, one need not be a scholar or musician to comprehend and be totally struck by Nancy Reich's telling of Clara's story. If you care anything about wives, mothers, daughters, friends, or music, this book is a MUST READ.

I discovered this marvelous book on the Clara Schumann Society website of Dr. David Kenneth Smith, Geneva College. I recommend doing a GOOGLE on "Clara '96" (the name of the site celebrating the anniversary of her death in 1996). You will get an abundance of hits, all of which are very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Tortured Virtuosa, Talented Writer.......2006-05-01

Nancy B. Reich certainly did her homework while writing the revised edition of Clara Schumann: The Artist and the Woman. Her resources include translations from primary texts in her native German, as well as other primary sources from the important friends in her life. She updated the 1985 version of the book in 2001 to include "a variety of significant documents-letters, medical reports, and music-that were in private hands and unavailable when [she] was working on the first edition". These texts include Robert Schumann's medical log, and Clara's correspondence with her husband's music publishers, the List family, and texts written by her granddaughter Julie. I felt this book was well laid out, and was able to include many thoughts and emotions from the people involved in Clara's life. By including information from the diaries and discerning when the passage was Wieck's writing or Clara's helped make clear whose feelings were really being expressed.
One thing I found was that Reich draws many of her own conclusions based on the information presented. Due to the difficulty of not having Clara's uninfluenced, uncorrected thoughts from the first twenty years of her life, it is difficult to actually know her true mind. Wieck's influence on her caused many of these primary documents to be soiled with his own opinions. They do, however, provide an interesting look at her motivations behind many of her decisions. He never spared his thought, and so, there is not as much need for speculation of his beliefs. Reich also does not ponder what her conclusions mean, she simply presents the facts, her opinions based on them, and allows the reader to agree or form their own ideas.
Her inclusion of a timeline of Clara's life in the beginning of the book is rather helpful. It allows the reader to follow her life and to find specific events within the book. Also, the division of chapters makes it easy to home in on specific parts of her life and to find the information easily. The second half of the book reemphasizes the themes in her life by forming separate sections with each grouping. These show her relationships with others and discuss the positions she held throughout her life. The second section might lose the reader's interest somewhat because of the recounting of many facts. She presents the information in greater depth, but she does so in a way that common themes are grouped together instead of emphasizing where they occurred in her life.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable read. It was very informative, and easy to follow. The writing flowed easily and the beginning held my attention. Reich wrote a book successful of influencing my emotions and teaching me more than I had ever known about Clara Schumann. This was a very effective story of the woman and artist's life, and I would recommend it as a great account.

5 out of 5 stars Truly fine biography.......2005-09-12

Reich's beautifully written, thoroughly researched and objective book is certainly the best biography on Clara Weick Schumann in English. It is also one of the finest biographies I have read of any subject by any author.

From her childhood as a piano virtuoso through her 50 year performing career, Schumann was an international star of the concert stage, a composer and champion of the composers close to her, a woman who astounded and compelled those who knew her, a legend in her own time.

She was, as we know, beset by personnal tragedies of the most anguishing kind, beginning with her complex relationship with her taskmaster father, who taught her, drove her mercilessly, and made her a star at the age of 12, then refused to allow her to marry the love of her life,

She defied him at a dear price and married Robert Schumann anyway. The book explores at length her life as a beloved, then shunned daughter; as a lover, wife, mother, composer and performer.

She suffered terribly Robert Schumann's early and probably syphilis-induced insanity and death, the deaths of most of her seven children at a young age, and extreme financial straits in which she found herself most of her life.

Reich takes us step by step through all of the contingencies of her professional life: her lifelong celebration of Schumann's work; the 'Young Werther' relationship with her beloved Johannes Brahms, whose career she promoted tirelessly; her complex personality and deep involvement in her career and their effect on her maternal relationship with each of her children.

Throughout, Reich draws a richly variegated picture of the world of classical music in Europe from the early 19th century onward -- its characters, creations, rivalries, performances, highs and lows. Schumann interacted with many of the centuries' finest composers and performers: Chopin, Joachim, Liszt, Schumann (of course), Brahms...the list goes on.

Reich presents the incredible strength and courage for which Schumann is well-known, but does not flinch at exploring her more problematic qualities, for which friends, family, children and Schumann herself, paid a price.

Clara's deep understanding of the music of Robert Schumann and others, and its profound physical and emotional effects on its her play throughout. Here is Clara Schuman, de-mythologized, de-romanticized, and still amazing.

Intriguing, richly embued with testimony from original sources, a pleasure to read, Reich does not just tell the tale. She performs a symphony.

                    5 out of 5 stars A gem of a biography--don't miss it!.......2003-06-09

This revised edition of Clara Schumann's biography by Nancy Reich is a gem. Not only is the scholarship impeccable and thorough, but the talented writing engages and fascinates the reader at every turn.

Features of this wonderful new edition include the use of new medical reports that have come to light regarding Robert Schumann's illness; reference to recently discovered letters and diaries that further elucidate Clara's friendships with people like Emilie List, Frederic Chopin, and the Mendelssohns; and the expansion of the Catalogue of Works.

The revised Catalogue alone makes this new edition compulsory for anyone-lay or professional-interested in Clara Schumann and her prodigious work and impact. The Catalogue records every known piece by Clara Schumann, reviews of her compositions, her own performances of her works, the location of autograph copies, and much more.

The 1985 edition of Dr. Reich's outstandingly researched biography clearly had a major impact on Schumann studies. It was followed by a continuing, worldwide outpouring of performances and recordings of Clara Schumann's works, articles about Clara, and studies of her music.

The biography is based on original research in German archives and first-hand consultation of letters, music autographs, diaries, and other primary sources. To this meticulous scholarship, Dr. Reich adds intelligent, compassionate analysis of Clara Schumann's life and music, the influences that shaped her, her inspirational marriage to Robert Schumann, and Clara's breathtaking, at times unbelievable strength and ongoing artistry amidst the sometimes horrific adversities in her life.

Rarely is such a magnificent feat of scholarship accompanied by such gripping and graceful writing.

This book is a must for anyone who professes interest in Schumann studies, nineteenth century music, and gender studies, or who wants to experience a true story of passionate, devoted love and the mutual pursuit of art that Clara and Robert Schumann inspired in each other.

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly researched, intimate glimpse into Clara's life.......2000-03-30

This is a unique biography that, while absolutely holding its own as an important scholarly work, remains lively and engaging enough to satisfy any reader. A brilliant performer (one of the first to play from memory), mother of seven, teacher, and devoted wife of a(nother) musical genius, Clara Schumann maintained an amazing sense of focus and personal identity throughout her life: navigating with aplomb her relationship with her overbearing father, and holding her own in a man's field. Ms. Reich brilliantly captures all of this in this book. Both her husband and Johannes Brahms claimed Clara as inspiration for some of their greatest works. And Ms. Reich devotes a thoughtful chapter to Clara's enigmatic relationship with Brahms. The insights offered in the last chapter on Clara's (and her father's) techniques as a performer and teacher would be invaluable for any piano student.

If reading any book on Robert Schumann or Brahms, get this book as well because it will complete the pictures of those composers lives. While reading this book one quickly becomes aware that Clara deserves much more than to be a footnote in her husband's life as she has often been designated. In fact, this work should be required reading in Women's Studies Programs for an interesting (albeit minor) point seems to have been overlooked: Clara Schumann was a contemporary of the great suffragettes Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) and Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906). And Clara, in her more private way, also lived a life filled with integrity and passion. She rightfully deserves a place in that same pantheon on trailblazers. This is a wonderful book about an incredible woman.

                              3 out of 5 stars Tops McCourt.......2001-09-04

While sometimes spending a little too much time on details for the Yank reader this book is well worth the effort. It shows that people can overcome and even thrive in the worst of conditions. O'Flynn also puts blame for these conditions where it belongs; the British. The featured reviewer (Kirkus Associates) must have skimmed the first few chapters. "There Is an Isle" is a much better work than "Angela's Ashes". Of course devotees of Frank McCourt will miss his constant attacks on Irish Catholic culture, but then again, they have numerous other sources.

3 out of 5 stars A very honest account of growing up in Limerick.......1999-09-20

This book was written as a corrective to the denigratory account of growing up in Limerick portrayed in Angela's Ashes. The latter book, for whatever it's literary style, is nothing more than pretentious claptrap and O'Flynn's There is an Isle should be compulsory reading for anyone who thinks Angela's Ashes is an accurate account of it's time and place.
