An absolute must read for anyone interested in Viet Nam War History, flying and adrenaline. First hand stories from the pilots who flew recon and rescue missions in Nam. Repetitive? Absolutely not as each person tells his story, as it happened to him. You get a well rounded view of each mission. I couldn't put it down. It is an adrenaline rush just to read. Bess Carnahan
Stories Well Worth Reading.......2006-09-23
This book is, in my view, a companion to another book entitled "Bury Us Upside Down: The Misty Pilots and the Secret Battle for the Ho Chi Minh Trail." That book took a slice in time through the "Misty" mission and discussed the actions of a narrow group of flyers, apparently those with whom the author served and with whom he was most familiar. This book takes a broader view and essentially presents the complete history of "Commando Sabre," termed "Misty," as told by many of the men who flew in that top secret unit during the Vietnam War. As such, it is a valuable piece of military history and well worth reading.
The book did, however, come across as a little repetitive, but in all probability that couldn't be helped. For many of the stories were written in 1970, seemingly for some other purpose, while others were written in response to solicitations by the author/editor, apparently without specific guidelines (e.g., Don't tell us how the unit was formed or why, how many missions you had to fly in the back seat to qualify, etc.). Furthermore, since "Mistys" flew in pairs and when in heavy action were often supported or replaced by other Mistys, more than one story author often wrote about the same event from his own perspective.
Nevertheless, this is a great read, particularly for those interested in military history or the Vietnam War. For all others, I would suggest that you at least check this book out of the library and read the following excerpts: "A Trip to North Vietnam," by Don Jones (pgs. 162-170); "Combat Photographer," by Wells Jackson (pgs. 240-252); "Rescue in POL Valley," by Steve Amdor (pgs. 280-283); "What Was That?," by Bob Bryan (pgs. 306-309); "Tidbits," by Bob Cassaro (pgs. 314-319); "Gutsy Gunner," by Tony McPeak (pgs. 338-341); "War," by E. Lynn Farnsworth (pgs. 411-419); "The POWs" (pgs. 435-477); and "Then and Now," by P. K. Robinson (pgs. 523-537) These are the best written stories, and most are told in an entertaining way. They will give you the flavor of Misty and tell you much about the brave men who flew in the Vietnam War, in general, and those who flew in this top secret unit, in particular.
The RAF in Vietnam.......2006-08-21
This is the companion book to "Bury me Upside Down". Any complaints that you might have about that book not staying on message are immediately dispelled in the more than 600 pages and 81 personal "stories" by the Misty pilots. The stories would seem fantastic if fictional, but these are real life stories. From the training in the US to the POW camps in Hanoi, from the multiple ejections to the "Mig sweeps" at the officer clubs, you will be fascinated by each person's stories. The references in the back are beyond useful. I found myself constantly flipping back to see what this pilot was doing today or who the other pilots were in his "generation" at Phu Cat.
And the ultimate farce of war is also present. Joseph Heller did not even com,e close to the truth in "Catch 22". When Colonels from Saigon would complain about the FACS getting their F-100 "damaged" by ground fire and write up the pilots and maintenance people for not taking better care of the US Government equipment, you had to wonder how we ever made any progress in that war.
If you want a read on what the "real" war was like for the US Air Force in Vietnam get this book and read it. You will not be disappointed.

This book is terrific, plain and simple. Any person interested in the courage and bravado of true fighter pilot heros in the VietNam War will be well-served reading this work.....you'll be glad you did!

I am a counselor at a behavioral school and I decided to use this book, along with the workbook, to do several group sessions with my students. As I started to read the book, I was amazed by how well written it was. The language used is perfect for their understanding and uses lots of references that teens can apply! Great to use for anyone working with teens or for a teen to use on their own!
Summary of Life Strategies for Teens in 365 Installments.......2002-01-04
Life Strategies for Teens is a superb book. If you have to choose between this book and that one, go for that one.
On the other hand, if you would like to reread the key ideas in Life Strategies for Teens, this book is a reasonably good resource for doing that. You would, however, benefit more by creating your own set of notes about Life Strategies for Teens that emphasizes that is most important for you to focus on. If that is hard for you to do, you could use this book as an outline from which you could abstract a briefer, and more relevant personal outline.
Most of the entries are devoted to the 10 Life Laws:
1. "You either get it, or you don't." January 26
2. "You create your own experience." February 27
3. "People do what works." March 16
4. "You cannot change what you do not acknowledge." March 29
5. "Life rewards action." May 8
6. "There is no reality, only perception." June 2
7. "Life is managed. It is not cured." July 9
8. "We teach people how to treat us." August 29
9. "There is power in forgiveness." October 4
10. "You have to name it before you can claim it." November 15
A section on the challenges of sex and drugs begins on December 11.
As you can see, making this a calendar presents something of a problem. Buy the book much past January 1, and you will feel strange reading it unless you wait until 2003 to start. A better design would have been to let you start whenever you got the book, and write in your own dates. But obviously, you can just write in your own dates and start whenever you get it.
I thought the better pages were the ones with questions to answer. Unfortunately, there were a lot fewer of these questions than in Life Strategies for Teens. You can find lots of good questions, however, in the Life Strategies for Teens Workbook, which I also recommend.
Should you read this book? If that's your learning style, to glance at something each day to get a thought or two, yes. If that's not your learning style, refer back to the workbook questions instead -- one per day.
May you find processes that help you build the most helpful habits that you want to establish!

I'm not interested in a book or books I can't even find out what they are about.
Seems to me you don't want anyone to see. Which is a shame. Especially for our troubled teens.
I'm looking for help for a teen and you don't make it one bit easy.

Definitely not Authentic Vietnamese Cooking!.......2006-07-18
I have been searching for this dessert Deep Fried Dumplings with Sesame seed, which is "banh cam" in Vietnamese and finally saw it in this book. I was so disappointed after making them. They were definitely not the same like the ones I normally purchased from these food to go vendors in the Little Saigon, CA area. I will be putting this book up for sale. Very disappointing and would not recommend this book.
Good cookbook for homecooking.......2006-01-14
I think the title "..Food from a family table.." is very appropriate for this cookbook. I really like the instructions that Corrine Trang gave accompanying the recipes. I feel that she had tried all her recipes herself. She also gave lots of correct insights about the Vietnamese culture and food. I really like this book and would like to buy her other book as well.
About the people complaining about eating dogs, I don't eat dogs and don't like meat in general even though i am not a vegan nor a vegetarian. I have a few comments. Why do dogs have such a special status compared to cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, deers, snakes, etc...? In the U.S. dogs are more pure bred and are highly regarded as pets. In other countries, they are just another domestic animal like a cow or a chicken. Most people don't eat dogs as everyday meat, dog meat is like specialty meat such as snake or deer that only men or adventurous minded people would dare try. You don't see people complaining about eating the other animals such as cows or chickens. Some people have one of these animals as pets too. I think if you are going to complain about people eating dogs, then don't be a hypocrite and mention other animals too. Otherwise i don't think they should be saying anything.
IT IS AUTHENTIC!.......2005-06-23
I was compelled to write this review after reading some of the negative comments below. First of all, the recipes in this book are true and correct. One needs to understand the history and geography of Vietnam to understand its diversity and be able to judge this book's authenticity. I have owned this book for five years and cooked from its recipes several times a week. I am a casual cook but have not once had a less-than-good result. Ms. Trang apparently tested her recipes meticulously, something not many cookbook authors do nowadays. I also would like to correct one of the previous reviews, the author did tell at the end of the recipe what herbs and condiments to serve with Pho. Please do not discount the value of this cookbook before you have read and used it. This is the only Vietnamese cookbook you ever need. Lastly, the author's comment on dog consumption wes presented for information's sakes. There is no encouragement of any kind and neither is there an inappropriate detail.
Not authentic at all........2003-09-11
Don't let the title of this book fool you. The recipes are not authentic at all. They have few ingredients and therefore easy to cook, for sure, but they're not authentic. On top of that, there are no pictures of the food. Her mentioning of eating dog meat is probably for shock value, and it turns me off completely. I wouldn't want to own this book.

In this penetrating and daring biography of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), Nancy Mowll Mathews traces the themes of sex and violence through the artist's life, from the near-murderous quarrels of his grandparents, to his abusive treatment of his wife, to his sexual encounters in French Polynesia in the 1890s. The book examines how Gauguin used these complex themes in his art and writings and how he carefully presented his "erotic life" in the autobiographical treatises "Noa Noa" (1893) and "Avant et Après" (1903). The central drama of Gauguin's adulthood--his marriage to Mette Gad Gauguin--is assessed in detail, and with the inclusion of some of Mette's previously unpublished letters, both sides of the Gauguin marriage are presented for the first time. Fresh approach.......2002-01-09
This book, in its calm, even-handed way, manages to make Paul Gauguin come to life for the first time. Rather than rehash the myths about this man (which, Mathews demonstrates, were started by Gauguin himself), the author goes directly to the primary sources to trace his life and understand his character. It turns out that he did beat his wife and leave her and their five children without financial support. And he treated most of his friends and colleagues with equal heartlessness. But the story does not end there. It goes on to show how even out of such a flawed character great art could arise. This book teaches much about the unpredictability of creative talent.
Prejudiced Author.......2001-12-26
It is unfortunate when an author approaches his or her subject with such a predetermined perspective that the author's opinions and report of facts becomes suspect. This is clearly the case with Nancy Mathews approach to Paul Gauguin.
She starts with the assumption that he is an abusive and violent man, and selectively views his life to support this distorted view.
Some examples: At p. 66 that author states: "It is not known whether Gauguin beat his children." What an outrageous statement for a purportedly objective biographer to make! It is like the proverbial qustion "When did you stop beating your wife?"
On page 62 as an example of Gauguin's "cruelty" to women is cited the fact that when Gauguin engaged in the Danish custom of men and women bathing nude at the beach he actually looked at a pretty, nude woman.
Also on page 62 the author states that when Gauguin left Denmark and returned to Paris, "Out of spite he took one of the children ..Clovis". The author offers not a sintilla of evidence to back up her statement that this action was spitefully motivated, rather than a natural paternal desire to have one of his sons with him.
Whatever merits the book may otherwise have, this obvious bias of the author makes the entire book suspect.

Phil, a journalist turned novelist, turned playwright, turned near-do-well wanna-be stand-up comedian, agrees to take a comedy gig which gives Luci, his wife, a chance to visit her high school friend, Sara, and her husband, Jerry.
