Book Description

Horatio Nelson's first captain was William Locker who recognized the exceptional talents of the young midshipman who was to become the most famous sailor in history.

Thirty-seven years later Admiral Lord Nelson wrote to Locker 'I have been your scholar; it was you who taught me to board a Frenchman by your conduct... It is you who always taught me to lay a Frenchman close and you will beat him. My only merit in my profession is being a good scholar'.

Captain William Locker's career as a Sea Captain fighting the King's enemies on the high seas makes gripping reading and high drama.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars More Nelson than Locker.......2006-05-18

Although extremely well researched and written, this book was a major disappointment. The title gives one the impression that the book is actually about Captain William Locker. Although the first chapter or so do indeed trace his background the remainder is largely a compilation of letters written to him by Nelson. Moreover, most of the pages are filled with descriptions of Nelson's exploits and few describe Locker's. As a biography of Nelson it is passing, there are far better books for that. As a biography of Locker it is sorely lacking.

4 out of 5 stars A book about a hero's own hero........2006-03-14

It is often difficult to picture Nelson as a Midshipman or junior officer but, of course, there was a time when he was. The first months and years in any new job - where good and bad practises can be learned equally well, are an impressionable time for any person.

Nelson's very first captain was William Locker. Recognising the exceptional talents of the young Midshipman, it was he who set out to teach this young man just about everything he knew and ships, seamanship and the Navy. It says much for this training that 37 years later Nelson wrote to Locker acknowledging how his former teacher had been the main instrument of Nelson's success and that he (Nelson) had merely been a good scholar.

Victor T. Sharman is the Chairman of the Nelson Society and an acknowledged expert on the period. In this book, he recounts Nelson's time under Locker's command and how he taught the skills that Nelson would go on to master and put to such good use. We are then treated to a full account of Locker's life and career at sea in His Majesty's ships and it was nothing if not a full, varied and very exciting career.

Might have included just a few more illustrations to add to the 16 portraits reproduced in the middle of the book, but that does not detract from a product which is extremely well written and often hard to put down.

                    Book Description

This book provides a scientific explanation for cancer through an analysis of the blood. The Jubbs explain how LifeFood nutrition—a diet rich in vegetarian foods found wild in nature and served uncooked—can detoxify and rejuvenate the body. Included are four herbal formulas for making colloidal medicines for proper hydration. These alkaline beverages can be readily absorbed to purify "dirty blood"—acidic and full of toxins—making the body inhospitable to cancer. Secrets of an Alkaline Body is informatively illustrated and includes testimonials from clients who have successfully cleared cancer from their bodies using the Jubbs' techniques.

This book is written for biologists, chemists, physicists, all manner of graduated doctors, allopathic and holistic. It requires knowledge of the inability of allopathic medicine to explain origins of life. It is a deep think, and an opening to a true paradigm shift in understanding the foundation of health. A fabulous book, only to be superceded by "Jubbs Cell Rejuvenation" (2006).

Consider the homely potato. A simple tuber--most often served baked, fried, or mashed--it inspires little passion, belonging instead to that same culinary family of comfort foods as macaroni and cheese or oatmeal. But with Sarah Reynold's 50 Best Mashed Potatoes, this humble root's fortunes may be changing. Replace the standard butter/milk/salt with chipotle chiles and cilantro butter, for example, or mash your potatoes with a wild mushroom ragout.... you'll hardly recognize this as the same vegetable your mother used to serve with Sunday dinner. From Smashed Red Potatoes with Extra-Virgin Olive Oil to traditional recipes that are still better than the ones your mother used to make, 50 Best Mashed Potatoes offers up a mashed potato for every occasion. Let your tubers take a walk on the wild side.

                    Book Description

50 creative recipes for everybody's favorite comfort food--mashed potatoes.

50 Best Mashed Potatoes has them all, from traditional favorites like Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and Mashed Potatoes with Cream Gravy to new classics like Chipotle Mashed Potatoes with Cilantro Butter and Mashed Potatoes with Wild Mushroom Ragout.  Also included are recipes for mashed potato--cheese combinations and potato-vegetable purées, as well as recipes using leftover mashed potatoes (should you be so lucky).  From the most basic to the most elaborate, the leanest to the richest, the humblest to the most elegant, there's a mashed potato for every occasion.

The best thing about this book is it's so full of design patterns. Having the charts for colorful designwork is handy. So many books are full of the actual garment patterns, this one is full of the design patterns making it easy for the creative knitter to find a design and adapt it to whatever knitting project they choose. It's great for the experienced knitter, however, it may not be the best or most useful for a new knitter although, it's definately one for the new knitter to have in their library as inspiration and future use.

Excellent resource for color work. And I mean color work as in knitting, embroidery, tapestry, mosaic. Doubles as all of that! This was my first book by Kaffe. Now I own a half dozen of them. And love them all.

Before starting my garden, I reviewed several books at the library. They were hard to follow and did not keep my attention, so I started gardening on my own, hit or miss. When I got my hands on Sue Fisher's book I could not put it down. The information is presented so clear and logical as if she is talking directly with you one-on-one.

You can learn the basics of everything or you can explore details of specific interests such as using color to create the illusion of a larger garden, planting in containers or planting in drought prone climates. Within the plant directory and the pictures throughout the book every plant is listed with both its technical and common name.

This book is excellent and easy to follow. The photographs and sketches are tremendously helpful.

                        Book Description

How beautiful can a small garden be? These lushly illustrated "specialist" strategies for making the most of a modest-sized space--whether backyard, terrace or courtyard--are simply magnificent. Get started with an informative discussion of small garden types, appropriate plants, problems and opportunities, design and planning. The excitement truly begins with a look at the wide variety of stylistic options. The gardens range from Mediterranean to wildflower, secluded to low-maintenance, container to balcony. And a plant directory covers it all: summer-flowering annuals, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, small trees, climbers, water plants, bamboos, culinary herbs, fruits, vegetables, and even more. For a finishing touch, there's information on garden construction, be it a path or a porch.

Fisher begins with information on assessing a site, taking into account climate and location, and planning what style of garden to plant. She gives advice on planting in the shade and the sun and on planting to scale, emphasizing the importance of shape, texture, and color. In a chapter on creative planting, she discusses using climbing plants, plants for privacy, gardening in containers, and planting raised beds of flowers. The author offers tips on preparing the soil; weed, pest, and disease control; feeding and watering; and propagation. There is a directory of 350 plants suitable for small gardens; each entry contains a description of the plant, its height and spread, preferred growing conditions, and propagation requirements. Complementing this instructive text are 109 color photographs and drawings and 32 black-and-white illustrations.

Reformed clutterer and best-selling author Mike Nelson (Stop Clutter from Stealing Your Life, and Clutter-proof Your Business) discusses why people clutter-regardless of their age-and how they can clean up and break out of their habit of cluttering. Nelson explains that cluttering is more about emotional triggers than organizing skills. "Organizing" is often too vague a goal for adults, as well. Traditional organizing techniques do not work for everyone because people relate to their "stuff" differently. He presents a wide array of techniques that will help all adults with cluttering habits permanently change their behavior and improve their life. This book is about a lot more than organizing-it's about creating a less cluttered life for you and a better life for your children. Your entire household will be more peaceful and stress free when the whole family "de-clutters" together!

In preparation for my trip to Italy I wanted a better understanding of this magnificent man and the work that he did. Specifically, I was looking for a relatively easy read that covered the history of Michelangelo from birth to death. This book met all my expectations. The pictures were not very good quality but I didn't mind since I was going to see most of it in person. Great traveler's history of Michelangelo!

The text in Michelangelo is marvelous. It is charmingly and knowledgeably written, so much so that I hope one of the reprints will be made into a coffee-table extravaganza. It is a superb guide which we will take with us on our next visit to Italy. The appendixes are a triumph in themselvers, and a worthwhile trip into the great master's progression through life. It is a wonderful job.

This lovely book maeasures up to every standard one can reasonably expect. The artwork is skilled and enjoyable. The story has kindness, altruism, moral dilemma and resolution, reward, and a big touch of magic. There's a pleasant realism about story, too. It shows a number of details of Japanese life, in passing, to give a storybook kid views of a life [s]he might never have seen in person. And, although the words "happily ever after" never actually appear, the last page shows the young couple deep in their old age. The book, as a whole, meets every objective standard of what I like to see in a children's book.

For me, though, this book goes way beyond reasonable standards, well into the things I favor in a very personal and subjective way. I take immense pleasure ukiyo-e prints, the classical Japanese woodcut style that these modern artists imitate. I first saw the picture of the sleeping couple as a greeting card, and found it affectionate and romantic, with a tiny chaste hint of very grown-up love - that image led me to hunt this book down. The one-eyed samurai has meaning in my family, too. And the "madarin ducks" of the title, traditional symbols of fidelity, have a strong and affectionate significance for me for utterly personal reasons.

So I recommend this book to anyone with a read-to-me kid. It's very easy for anyone to like. For me, though, a striking set of coincidences make this a truly memorable work.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read Aloud!.......2006-05-18

This book is great to read to kids! It has suspense and it also shows kids how doing the right thing can seem bad, but soon you'll get something back. I liked the moral of the story and I like the way they illustarted it to look just like ancient Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Love Takes Wing.......2005-11-07

This beautifully illustrated book and equally beautiful story is very moving. It is set in old Japan and is a look at Japanese history and culture.

It is the story of love; of being willing to take chances to protect another and about kindness rewarding many times over. It speaks to the ripple effect of how one single act of kindness, in this case freeing an imprisoned drake will be rewarded lovingly.

5 out of 5 stars What a great kids book!.......2005-07-19

I bought this for my nephew a few years back, and I looked through it before wrapping it. The story is interesting yet simple, and the illustrations are beautiful. It also provides a nice little glimpse into another culture, which is nice for homeschooling families. I can't wait until my son is old enough to read this with him!

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks.......2000-03-18

My granddaughter (11) and I have enjoyed this book emmensely and are re-reading it often. She loves tales of Japan and the beautiful illustrations. My husband and I lived in Japan for 2 years. This book's story has good moral principles and is an easy way to teach kind thoughtful behavior and the benefits of love and responsibility.

TWO OPPOSING HEARTS FIND DESIRE WHEN THEY LEAST EXPECT IT!
As a devious plot swirls to overthrow the monarchy, Gwendolyn Rossiter, whose brother leads the fight to defend the Crown, finds her lively wit and outspoken nature largely ignored by the haut ton. With one exception: August Falcon, a devilishly handsome resistance conspirator. Yet the passion Gwendolyn inspires in him is more rage at her audacity than tenderness. And if she is even mildly fond of him, she conceals it admirably.
But as riots in London escalate, and the League of Jewelled Men brings its fiendish machinations to the fore, Gwendolyn will suddenly find unexpected love in the arms of a man who swore he was immune to her charms. . . .

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Veryan.......1998-08-05

I loved this book because the characters of August and Gwendolyn were so well developed. In previous books of the series, as I watched their relationship grow, I had hoped they would get their own story. I think everyone who reads romance or historical novels will enjoy this book, but I would recommend reading the other books in The League of the Jewelled Men first.

5 out of 5 stars Great novel by one of the best romance authors.......1998-06-07

From the first book in the series, I waited impatiently for August and Gwen to get their own story (as it was obvious they *must*). August is simply one of the most attractive, engaging, interesting, at-times frustrating heroes of a book in recent memory. Patricia Veryan, as usual, has woven a rich tapestry of romance, humor, history and action. I implore any readers of romance who haven't read her novels to give her a try -- you won't be disappointed. She writes with true talent and heart.

5 out of 5 stars Her most fascinating hero finds his love. Enthrall!ing!.......1998-01-07

I am a great and dedicated fan of Ms. Veryan. I have read a great many Regency and Historical romances and find her my all time favorite author. August Falcon is definitely her best most intriguing and romantic character to-date. I had great hopes for this book which were mostly fullfilled. The story line was well thought out and developed, however I did not think enough time was given to the relationship between August and Gwen. I felt they should have had more time together with more interaction between them and also between her brother and August. I would have enjoyed a less humorous ending to the book, more in line with August's character, showing his kindness, humanity and love for Gwen and his friends. These facets of his personality were allways hinted at in all the previous stories, but were never fully brought to the surface at length. Notwithstanding the above, I still consider this one of my favorite books and look forward to rereading it many times. I hope that Ms. Veryan will continue to write sagas like the Jewelled Men and create such fantastic romantic characters such as August Falcon.

                              5 out of 5 stars A most satisfying conclusion.......1997-11-12

I have been waiting to get my hands on the final volume of the League of Jewelled Men for a very long time. It was absolutely worth the wait. This book, and the entire series, is one of the best that I have ever read. Patricia Veryan belongs on the Bestseller Lists because she truly is a gifted writer. She knows how to make us laugh and cry with her fabulous characters, intricate plots and quirks of humor that just seem to pop up. This series will leave you breathless. Finally, August Falcon met his match. I loved it and recommend this series to ANYONE who likes good historical fiction. A must read, over and over and over.....

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read.......1997-10-26

The Mandarin of Mayfair is a brilliant conclusion to a wonderful series. The cynical and exposive August Falcon realises he'd fallen in love with Gwendolyn Rossiter, the outspoken, quick-witted friend of his sister. However, his scruples might prevent their happiness and so might his sister's desire to marry Jamie Morris and the machinations of the League of the Jewelled men, whose leader seems to have a grudge against Falcon. It is a truly wonderful book, filled with laughter and tears. I laughed and oohed and I cried, and when I finished, I felt that it had been a wonderful experience. Veryan manages to describe love, hatred, friendship, and loyalty like no one else. And the hero and the heroine, who appeared in the previous books of the series are truly well-matched, with a wonderful ability for both verbal parrying, quick thinking and breathtaking tenderness. Read it: you won't regret it.

                                        Product Description

Each fairy tale starts in English, then slowly MORPHS INTO MANDARIN CHINESE

Begin with LEVEL 1! This book will teach your child 20+ new Mandarin Chinese words in a fun, fast, and truly easy way! Here s how it works...

                                        * An English word in the fairy tale is circled with its Mandarin Chinese translation in the column.

                                        * From that moment forward, the Chinese word (written in red) will be used throughout the rest of the story... and it will be used again and again in context!

                                        * As the fairy tale progresses, more and more Chinese words are added like a big language train gathering words along the way.

                                        * The new words are repeated throughout the story helping to reinforce understanding.

                                        * By the end of the book, the child has easily learned 20+ new Chinese words in context!

It's easy! And remember... each level uses words taught from previous levels...so you ll want to continue with the next levels. By the end of the last level, the fairy tale will be written almost entirely in Chinese - and it will be easy to understand EVERYTHING!

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks.......2006-06-10

Ironic that this book followed The Value of Honesty (ISBN 0916392368) in the pile - they go well together, both culturally and in the teaching-morals way.

A pair of ducks lived near a pond on land in the district of a cruel lord, who liked to surround himself with beautiful things, and disliked all things not beautiful. Among the things he'd come to dislike was Shozo, who had once been the lord's mightiest samurai. Shozo lost an eye in battle and was not handsome, but he was a compassionate man. When the lord saw the drake, the more attractively colored duck, he decided to take him home as a pet. In captivity, the duck withered and became ugly, missing his mate, so a maid set him free. The lord blamed Shozo, and punished him, but Shozo did not mind so much - he had fallen in love with the maid. Eventually ordered put to death, the pair are saved by mysterious Imperial messengers and live in peace, knowing that a burden is lighter when it is shared.

A superb book for kids, who will enjoy the story while learning about compassion and caring. The back of the book says ages 5-9; that's fairly accurate, but a lot of 5 year olds will need a bit of help to understand it. By the time the reader is 9, the few big words won't seem so intimidating.
