Frank Speer Manufacturer: Xlibris Corporation ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1401099076 |
Book Description
Two WWII fighter pilots, raised on different continents and trained in different countries, fight life or death combat with the Luftwaffe over Europe. They flew P-51 Mustangs in the 4th Fighter Group and contributed to the Group score of a record 1000-plus enemy planes destroyed, the highest total of any Allied Group. They became Aces within a day of each other; then one was killed in combat on D-Day, while the other, having been shot down, trekked across northern Germany in a futile effort to evade capture. He is finally captured and as a POW, is forced to participate in a "Death March." After several unsuccessful attempts, he and a fellow POW finally escape. Leading a handful of French forced-laborers they capture 25 German soldiers, turn them over to Patton's advancing Third Army and eventually return to the U.S. by hospital ship.

The book itself is a collection of articles from "Fine Woodworking" magazine. For the most part, the editor's choice of articles is excellent. For example, the Setting Up Shop section has three articles: 1)outfitting a shop, 2) buying used hand tools, and 3)converting your garage into a workshop. Although I found little of interest in the 2nd article, I learned as much from the other two has entire books on the subject. I especially liked the fact that the article on outfitting a shop had the pull-no-punches opinions of 3 different woodworkers. This lets the reader see that no two experts agree on the subject, but there is enough agreement that it should help a beginner make wiser choices.
The 4 articles on buying wood, sheet goods, glue, and sandpaper were all full of practical information normally lacking in other books.
The Tools and Techniques sections have 13 well-chosen articles, although the collection is far from being a comprehensive survey of the subject. The only power tools covered in any depth are the table saw and router. You may want to supplement your education with other books on these topics.
I found the sections on "First Projects" and "Finishes" to be a little weaker than the other parts. These articles suffer from the fact that this type of book no flow of logic from one chapter to the next. The chapters on finishing suffer from considerable overlap and some conflicting information. Still, I found the individual articles interesting.
In summary, I think this book is an excellent place to start if you are new to woodworking. After buying this very inexpensive book, you can go straight to more definitive books on only the topics you have real interest in. From what I have seen, you can safely skip the other introductory books.

Feed Your Kids Well: How to Help Your Child Lose Weight and Get Healthy

Book Description
"I've worked side by side with Dr. Pescatore for many years. In this book—which I heartily recommend—Dr. Pescatore teaches you how to bring health and nutrition to the next generation."—Robert C. Atkins, M.D., author of the multimillion copy bestseller Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution."Feed Your Kids Well offers a sensible approach to the difficult problem of childhood obesity—and many other children's health problems. Dr. Pescatore provides parents with excellent strategies for dealing with their children in a positive, sensitive way."—Carol Colman, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Melatonin Miracle.
"Feed Your Kids Well is an excellent book that explains the importance of a well-balanced diet. It exposes the dangers associated with high-sugar foods and reveals the true cause of childhood obesity."—Joyce and Gene Daoust, authors of 40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition.
"I helped nutritionally vet Adelle Davis's book, Let's Have Healthy Children. In my opinion, Feed Your Kids Well replaces that important work."—Fran Gare, nutrition expert, CBS-TV.
Today, one-third of North American children and teenagers are overweight. And despite decades of medical and scientific breakthroughs, the percentage of children with health problems today is the highest in history.
Feed Your Kids Well will be a revelation for millions of worried parents. Dr. Fred Pescatore, who was overweight and asthmatic as a child, brings an empathetic and hopeful tone to this groundbreaking guide to achieving optimum nutrition, ideal health, and self-confidence.
Building on the low-carbohydrate principles of the hugely popular Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution—which has helped millions of adults lose weight permanently—Dr. Pescatore applies the Atkins Center's proven nutritional program to children and teenagers. Thoroughly tested over years of exhaustive research, his Next Generation Diet is the first health program to recognize that simply applying adult diet plans to children is ineffective—and often dangerous. The author argues that the real culprit behind dietary problems is not fat, but sugars and starches. Feed Your Kids Well brings something new to the table: sane and practical guidance for parents concerned not only about weight loss, but also about general wellness and the prevention of disease—from asthma to ADD, from earaches to allergies.
After explaining how your child's body and metabolism work, Dr. Pescatore clearly outlines a straightforward nutritional lifestyle program that helps parents shape the important building blocks—proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—into complete, well-balanced meals. Packed with easy-to-follow sample menus for every day of the week, this book provides delicious, healthy alternatives. Kids will love the dozens of simple, step-by-step recipes for a variety of dishes, including pancakes with strawberry topping, chicken fingers, beef tacos, fudgy brownie squares, and peanut butter cookies. Some recipes are easy enough for kids to make themselves!
Parents will also learn how to integrate effective nutrition with various vitamin supplements, complementary medical treatments, and a regular exercise program, which can help heal and even prevent childhood ailments. With fascinating case studies, Dr. Pescatore demonstrates how to treat these problems simply by monitoring nutrient deficiencies and sugar overload.
In childhood, the all-important seeds of our adult selves are planted—from our personalities to our eating habits. Feed Your Kids Well helps parents prepare their children for healthy, happy lives.

Wish I was fed that well.......2004-02-24
Dr. Pescatore's diet is high in whole grains, unprocessed-preservative laden meats, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and healthy oils. He cuts out refined sugar, refined grains, and processed foods. That's pretty darned healthy!
As for unrealistic and to hard do for a busy parent, sure it's easier to slap a piece of processed cheese, a couple pieces of nitrated cold cuts between two slices of nutrient deficient white sandwich bread or grab a kiddie meal at a fast food place call it a meal. But is it healthy for your child? Will it teach your child healthy eating habits? Too many people cop out on themselves and their children all in the name of "convenience" and at the risk of their health (then they go and sue fast food restaurant chains for their health problems).
Dr. Pescatore's diet is similar to Dr. Atkins'. Furthermore, Dr. Atkins and Atkins Nutritionals never recommended their diet for children and teenagers due to their different nutritional needs. So this book is a must read for people on Atkins who want to introduce their children to a low carb lifestyle safely and effectively.
Good Advice on Feeding Kids of All Ages but..............2002-06-24
I guess his experiences prompted him to write this book to spare other children from the hell he went through. He does a good job.
Basically, he tells parents to drastically reduce the carbohydrates in their and thier cildren's diets. He rightly gives the thumbs down to fruit juices (the equivalent of soda, he says), pasta, refined sugars, processed foods, and too many starchy vegetables like potatoes. He also warns against phony fats like margarine and vegetable shortening.
The healthy diet he espouses contains meats, natural fats, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, limited amounts of fruits and grains, eggs, and dairy (if not allergic). Thank God he blames sugars and refined foods for the ills afflicting our young and not natural fats!
He also has a good section on how to approach common childhood illneses like asthma, acne, and ADD.
Drawbacks? A LOT of his recipes call for using soy protein powder or soy flour--a hotbed of anti-nutrients like phytic acid (which binds to minerals in the digestive tract, preventing their absorption) and protease inhibitors (which hinder digestion). The phytoestrogens in soy can also affect hormonal levels in children so I would not be including in my children's (or my own) meals.
Another drawback is basically a contradiction: In the chapter on food sources, he recommends feeding your kids organic meat and dairy foods. Then in the next chapter, he tells parents to remove all the visible fat from meats and chicken skin from any chicken served, not because he thinks fat is bad, but because the fat is where pesticide residues concentrate. This may be true, but if you're buying and serving organic meat, there won't be any pesticide residues in the fat! It sounds like he's trying to be politically-correct about fat which is strange given that he definitely is in favor of MORE healthy fat in a child's diet.
Pretty darned good for an Atkins follower..........2002-02-21

A Grand Eye for Glory: A Life of Franz Johnston
Roger Burford Mason Manufacturer: Dundurn Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1550023055 |
Book Description
Franz Johnston is the missing man of Canadian painting. The most prolific and financially successful of the original Group of Seven, Johnston's paintings were among the most sought after in Canada in the years between the mid-1920s and his death in 1949. They appear in the collections of dozens of discriminating private collectors, and in institutions such as the National Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Collection, and the Canadian War Museum. As well, his work once hung, in thousands of well-loved reproductions, on the walls of ordinary people's homes the length and breadth of the country. And yet, for all his distinguished success, Johnston is no more than a footnote in the many histories of the Group of Seven, and is rarely mentioned in the context of the general development of art in Canada in the twentieth century. Johnston was born and raised in Toronto, worked with J.E.H. MacDonald, Fred Varley, Arthur Lismer, and Franklin Carmichael at Grip, the famous commercial art studio in Toronto, and served with distinction as an official war artist in the last years of the First World War. He subsequently taught at the art schools in Winnipeg and Toronto (he was the principal of the Winnipeg Art School and Gallery for four years in the early 1920s) before opening his own art school on the shores of Georgian Bay. When the Group of Seven held its first, seminal exhibition at the Art Museum of Toronto in May 1920, Johnston exhibited and sold more paintings than any of the others. In this, the first biography of Franz Johnston, the author seeks to provide a guide to the life, work, and times of this unjustly neglected, but influential figure in Canadian art and culture. Beautifully illustrated with sixteen four-colour reproductions of Johnston's best paintings, and rare black-and-white photographs from a family collection and other sources.
