    Book Description

Two WWII fighter pilots, raised on different continents and trained in different countries, fight life or death combat with the Luftwaffe over Europe. They flew P-51 Mustangs in the 4th Fighter Group and contributed to the Group score of a record 1000-plus enemy planes destroyed, the highest total of any Allied Group. They became Aces within a day of each other; then one was killed in combat on D-Day, while the other, having been shot down, trekked across northern Germany in a futile effort to evade capture.

He is finally captured and as a POW, is forced to participate in a "Death March." After several unsuccessful attempts, he and a fellow POW finally escape. Leading a handful of French forced-laborers they capture 25 German soldiers, turn them over to Patton's advancing Third Army and eventually return to the U.S. by hospital ship.

      Book Description

Finally, a book that addresses your concerns about DID

From Eve to Sybil to Truddi Chase, the media have long chronicled the lives of people with dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly known as multiple personality disorder. The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook serves as a much-needed bridge for communication between the dissociative individual and therapists, family, and friends who also have to learn to deal with the effects of this truly astonishing disorder.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars DID.......2007-08-23

This book has excellent information on this topic of dissociative disorders. Full of details easy for others to pick up on and completely understand. I have learned alot about this disorder and have been able to reach out to others also suffering in silence with this disorder. Well written with passion, concern and knowledge... Deborah Bray Haddock has really put her heart into writting this book, she did a super job, a must have for those who are suffering with any dissociative disorder..

      4 out of 5 stars "DID 101".......2007-08-18

Personally, I think that this is a wonderful introduction to DID for those who are either affected by the condition, or others who would like to learn about DID. The book gives an overview of several forms of treatment and introduces the reader to the basic concepts of DID. This is a great place to start and I feel that the author's intention to provide a basic "source book" was much needed and well accomplished. I will say though that if you are an extremely detail oriented person and you enjoy going deeper, this book alone will not suffice. This is more of a "DID 101" kind of book for patients, family, friends, and therapists who are unfamiliar with DID. The language is very easy to understand, which makes it ideal for the average lay person.
For a more in-depth took at dissociation and trauma, I already have a list of several books on Amazon ("so you'd like to read about trauma and dissociation"), which, although far from comprehensive, is a step in the right direction for those who are interested.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly Informative!.......2007-07-30

This is the first book I read on the subject and helped me in attaining a much needed understanding of my own condition. This book also helped dispel the myths and fears I had regarding this topic. Having DID myself, I know what an extremely complex and often baffling psychological condition this book addresses. Reading this book helped me begin to see how the pieces of this enigmatic puzzle fit together. I am grateful to the author for her work on this topic. I know from personal experience exactly how difficult it is to explain this condition to others. I truly appreciate that someone took the time to help facilitate this much needed understanding for those with DID and the significant people in their lives.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-11-10

This book has been a wonderful resource - both for myself as well as support persons in my life.

5 out of 5 stars New Therapist highly recommends! .......2006-08-19

This is the 30th book I have read in my new field of psychology. I just finished my Masters in Counseling and state this book is so well written and in depth; it provides a review of many of the important aspects of my Masters Program; e.g. theories, diagnosis, therapy tools and techniques. While a wonderful book on Dissociative Identity Disorder, it is also a great resource for many aspects of therapy.

Thank you for writing this book, it will stay with me throughout my career!

      Book Description

The history of sausage making dates back to an obscure moment in time when early man discovered that his surplus meat lasted longer when it was chopped, mixed with a little raw natural salt to flavor it, and stored in the stomach or intestines of the animal. Since the discovery of sausage nearly 5,000 years ago, people from all over the world have been making sausage at home without the need for expensive equipment.
You may ask, why choose venison sausage instead of your regular pork or beef sausage? Harold Webster explains that making homemade venison sausage is safe, simple, and more economical. It provides a unique activity in which all members of your family can participate, and ultimately enjoy the fruits of their labor. All of the seasoning ingredients can be found in any supermarket, and you can have confidence in the meat's purity because it came from the woods.
THE VENISON SAUSAGE COOKBOOK provides step-by-step instructions to help you with selecting condiments, grinding, patty making, casing, stuffing, packaging, and storing your venison. In addition, you will find recipes for well over a hundred varieties of venison sausage, ranging from Mild and Easy Venison Sausage, to Syrian Venison Sausage Links with Red Wine and Pine Nuts, to Bratwurst Venison and Onion Sausage. If you're wondering what to serve with your delicious venison sausage, Webster also includes 195 of his best menus for all types of meals and occasions.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fairly good book for the beginning Craftsman.......2006-03-29

This is not too bad a book, very informative of the basics, if you have at least a rudimentary knowlege of the jargon used by woodworkers. If you don't, you will be a jargon expert by the books end, alternativly, you may end up totally confused.

Also, the first project they give for a beginning woodworker involves owning a biscuit joiner. Noone brand new to woodworking even THINKS about buying such a thing, and at $100 a pop, they may be a bit spendy for someone who just plopped down a truckload of cash on tools.

but I digress.... Overall a very handy reference, and comes reccomended.

1 out of 5 stars Not so hot Woodworking.......2005-09-29

I don't recommend this book. It was too general in the information that it provided and was not very useful.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great guide!.......2003-07-03

As a beginning woodworker, I can't recommend this book enough. It covers just about everything to get you going - laying out a shop, table saws, hand tools, ideal tools to own, dovetail joints, finishes, the list goes on and on. I'm constantly referring back to it as questions pop up.

3 out of 5 stars Not for complete beginners!.......2001-08-10

This is not a good book for those without any woodworking experience. There is too much jargon that is unexplained, and no real starting projects. I'm certain that there is excellent info for beginners who are looking to expand their knowledge and skills, but for people with no background who are looking for the most basic advice, I would look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Good place to start.......2000-11-25

My desire to get back into woodworking after many, many years has led me to purchase about a dozen different books on setting up shop, buying tools, woodworking techniques, etc. Now I wish I had found this book much sooner.

The book itself is a collection of articles from "Fine Woodworking" magazine. For the most part, the editor's choice of articles is excellent. For example, the Setting Up Shop section has three articles: 1)outfitting a shop, 2) buying used hand tools, and 3)converting your garage into a workshop. Although I found little of interest in the 2nd article, I learned as much from the other two has entire books on the subject. I especially liked the fact that the article on outfitting a shop had the pull-no-punches opinions of 3 different woodworkers. This lets the reader see that no two experts agree on the subject, but there is enough agreement that it should help a beginner make wiser choices.

The 4 articles on buying wood, sheet goods, glue, and sandpaper were all full of practical information normally lacking in other books.

The Tools and Techniques sections have 13 well-chosen articles, although the collection is far from being a comprehensive survey of the subject. The only power tools covered in any depth are the table saw and router. You may want to supplement your education with other books on these topics.

I found the sections on "First Projects" and "Finishes" to be a little weaker than the other parts. These articles suffer from the fact that this type of book no flow of logic from one chapter to the next. The chapters on finishing suffer from considerable overlap and some conflicting information. Still, I found the individual articles interesting.

In summary, I think this book is an excellent place to start if you are new to woodworking. After buying this very inexpensive book, you can go straight to more definitive books on only the topics you have real interest in. From what I have seen, you can safely skip the other introductory books.

                      Book Description

"I've worked side by side with Dr. Pescatore for many years. In this book—which I heartily recommend—Dr. Pescatore teaches you how to bring health and nutrition to the next generation."—Robert C. Atkins, M.D., author of the multimillion copy bestseller Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.

"Feed Your Kids Well offers a sensible approach to the difficult problem of childhood obesity—and many other children's health problems. Dr. Pescatore provides parents with excellent strategies for dealing with their children in a positive, sensitive way."—Carol Colman, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Melatonin Miracle.

"Feed Your Kids Well is an excellent book that explains the importance of a well-balanced diet. It exposes the dangers associated with high-sugar foods and reveals the true cause of childhood obesity."—Joyce and Gene Daoust, authors of 40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition.

"I helped nutritionally vet Adelle Davis's book, Let's Have Healthy Children. In my opinion, Feed Your Kids Well replaces that important work."—Fran Gare, nutrition expert, CBS-TV.

Today, one-third of North American children and teenagers are overweight. And despite decades of medical and scientific breakthroughs, the percentage of children with health problems today is the highest in history.

Feed Your Kids Well will be a revelation for millions of worried parents. Dr. Fred Pescatore, who was overweight and asthmatic as a child, brings an empathetic and hopeful tone to this groundbreaking guide to achieving optimum nutrition, ideal health, and self-confidence.

Building on the low-carbohydrate principles of the hugely popular Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution—which has helped millions of adults lose weight permanently—Dr. Pescatore applies the Atkins Center's proven nutritional program to children and teenagers. Thoroughly tested over years of exhaustive research, his Next Generation Diet is the first health program to recognize that simply applying adult diet plans to children is ineffective—and often dangerous. The author argues that the real culprit behind dietary problems is not fat, but sugars and starches. Feed Your Kids Well brings something new to the table: sane and practical guidance for parents concerned not only about weight loss, but also about general wellness and the prevention of disease—from asthma to ADD, from earaches to allergies.

After explaining how your child's body and metabolism work, Dr. Pescatore clearly outlines a straightforward nutritional lifestyle program that helps parents shape the important building blocks—proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—into complete, well-balanced meals. Packed with easy-to-follow sample menus for every day of the week, this book provides delicious, healthy alternatives. Kids will love the dozens of simple, step-by-step recipes for a variety of dishes, including pancakes with strawberry topping, chicken fingers, beef tacos, fudgy brownie squares, and peanut butter cookies. Some recipes are easy enough for kids to make themselves!

Parents will also learn how to integrate effective nutrition with various vitamin supplements, complementary medical treatments, and a regular exercise program, which can help heal and even prevent childhood ailments. With fascinating case studies, Dr. Pescatore demonstrates how to treat these problems simply by monitoring nutrient deficiencies and sugar overload.

In childhood, the all-important seeds of our adult selves are planted—from our personalities to our eating habits. Feed Your Kids Well helps parents prepare their children for healthy, happy lives.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I was fed that well.......2004-02-24

Doesn't include most fruits or vegetables? Unless you believe the only fruit worthy to be served to a child is fruit juice or that the only vegetable fit for a child to eat is a potato, this diet isn't terribly exclusive in terms of vegetables or fruit. Lettuces, berries, broccoli, asparagus, melons, cauliflower, spinach, green beans, pumpkin, are all fair game on this diet.

Dr. Pescatore's diet is high in whole grains, unprocessed-preservative laden meats, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and healthy oils. He cuts out refined sugar, refined grains, and processed foods. That's pretty darned healthy!

As for unrealistic and to hard do for a busy parent, sure it's easier to slap a piece of processed cheese, a couple pieces of nitrated cold cuts between two slices of nutrient deficient white sandwich bread or grab a kiddie meal at a fast food place call it a meal. But is it healthy for your child? Will it teach your child healthy eating habits? Too many people cop out on themselves and their children all in the name of "convenience" and at the risk of their health (then they go and sue fast food restaurant chains for their health problems).

Dr. Pescatore's diet is similar to Dr. Atkins'. Furthermore, Dr. Atkins and Atkins Nutritionals never recommended their diet for children and teenagers due to their different nutritional needs. So this book is a must read for people on Atkins who want to introduce their children to a low carb lifestyle safely and effectively.

4 out of 5 stars Good Advice on Feeding Kids of All Ages but..............2002-06-24

Dr. Pescatore's book opens with an affecting autobiography. He relates how he was grossly overweight as a child and all of the anguish that brought him, especially at school. His solution was drastic: He ate/drank nothing except diet soda for 40 days during one Lenten season! He lost 60 pounds and never looked back.

I guess his experiences prompted him to write this book to spare other children from the hell he went through. He does a good job.

Basically, he tells parents to drastically reduce the carbohydrates in their and thier cildren's diets. He rightly gives the thumbs down to fruit juices (the equivalent of soda, he says), pasta, refined sugars, processed foods, and too many starchy vegetables like potatoes. He also warns against phony fats like margarine and vegetable shortening.

The healthy diet he espouses contains meats, natural fats, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, limited amounts of fruits and grains, eggs, and dairy (if not allergic). Thank God he blames sugars and refined foods for the ills afflicting our young and not natural fats!

He also has a good section on how to approach common childhood illneses like asthma, acne, and ADD.

Drawbacks? A LOT of his recipes call for using soy protein powder or soy flour--a hotbed of anti-nutrients like phytic acid (which binds to minerals in the digestive tract, preventing their absorption) and protease inhibitors (which hinder digestion). The phytoestrogens in soy can also affect hormonal levels in children so I would not be including in my children's (or my own) meals.

Another drawback is basically a contradiction: In the chapter on food sources, he recommends feeding your kids organic meat and dairy foods. Then in the next chapter, he tells parents to remove all the visible fat from meats and chicken skin from any chicken served, not because he thinks fat is bad, but because the fat is where pesticide residues concentrate. This may be true, but if you're buying and serving organic meat, there won't be any pesticide residues in the fat! It sounds like he's trying to be politically-correct about fat which is strange given that he definitely is in favor of MORE healthy fat in a child's diet.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darned good for an Atkins follower..........2002-02-21

I am a nutritionist who beleives in copious amounts of complex carbs from fruit and vegetables in our diet...in balance with proteins and good fat. So, I am not a believer in the Atkins high protein/low carb diet... Dr. Pescatore is a protege of Dr. Atkins, who has moved on from him. His book reflects that progression and is full of really helpful points about the dangers present in the foods our children eat. He includes a personal and poignant perspective about the damage that obesity does to our kid's health and self esteem. He is a powerful advocate for our children. I encourage anyone who reads this to add raw fruits and vegetables in great quantities to their children's diets to make up for all of the bad foods, bad fats, bad additives, low quality meals, and lack of essential fats in their diets. Look at what he has to say about the weakness of fruit juices [vs fruits], no-fat and lowfat milk, hydrogenated fats, and on page 72, about 1-2 teaspons of sugar. As the mother of a 7 year old, I really was glad to find his book. Buy it and read it.

1 out of 5 stars UNREALISTIC AND UNCLEAR.......2000-04-28

I was very disappointed with Feed Your Kids Well. This is an Atkins/Low Carbohydrate type diet that excludes most fruits and vegetables. The book is filled with list of "off limit" foods and only 6-7 time consuming recepies. All meals must be made from scratch and everyday children should be eating eggs for breakfas! What if your child does not like eggs? The author is unclear on what children should be eating. His suggestions seem unrealistic (especiall for working parents) and his exclusion of most fruits and vegetables seems more of a "fad diet" than a healty solution to a difficult problem many parents with little time face.

                      5 out of 5 stars WOW! What a difference!.......2000-04-18

I started on the Atkins diet program in September of 1999. I began loosing weight rapidly, but was frustrated by the fact that my 7 year old son was still gaining weight. I knew he had the same reactions to carbohydrated that I did. I wanted to put him on the program, but refused to do it on my own for fear I would hurt him. After discovering the book How to Feed your Kids Well, I started my son on the program. He lost 17 pounds rapidly, and we have maintained his weight loss for 4 months and still counting. He has the energy of two of his former selves. He rides his bike for hours without complaint, and is anxious to run and play for the first time ever. The best part is that he is no longer teased or called fat. He is happy. I know that this has changed our lives forever. I thank Dr. Pescatore for helping me help my child safely.

                          Book Description

Franz Johnston is the missing man of Canadian painting. The most prolific and financially successful of the original Group of Seven, Johnston's paintings were among the most sought after in Canada in the years between the mid-1920s and his death in 1949. They appear in the collections of dozens of discriminating private collectors, and in institutions such as the National Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Collection, and the Canadian War Museum. As well, his work once hung, in thousands of well-loved reproductions, on the walls of ordinary people's homes the length and breadth of the country. And yet, for all his distinguished success, Johnston is no more than a footnote in the many histories of the Group of Seven, and is rarely mentioned in the context of the general development of art in Canada in the twentieth century. Johnston was born and raised in Toronto, worked with J.E.H. MacDonald, Fred Varley, Arthur Lismer, and Franklin Carmichael at Grip, the famous commercial art studio in Toronto, and served with distinction as an official war artist in the last years of the First World War. He subsequently taught at the art schools in Winnipeg and Toronto (he was the principal of the Winnipeg Art School and Gallery for four years in the early 1920s) before opening his own art school on the shores of Georgian Bay. When the Group of Seven held its first, seminal exhibition at the Art Museum of Toronto in May 1920, Johnston exhibited and sold more paintings than any of the others. In this, the first biography of Franz Johnston, the author seeks to provide a guide to the life, work, and times of this unjustly neglected, but influential figure in Canadian art and culture. Beautifully illustrated with sixteen four-colour reproductions of Johnston's best paintings, and rare black-and-white photographs from a family collection and other sources.
