2 out of 5 stars Boring + Overdramatic = Annoying.......2007-02-02

I am currently almost halfway through this audiobook and don't like it. I tried to like it during the first hour or two but cannot - I hate it. I would stop listening to the book but my nondiscriminating son is fascinated by it. I would love to introduce him to *good* WWII stories, such as We Die Alone, Currahee or Roll Me Over but they are not available in audiobooks or not appropriate for his age.

My chief complaint about the book is the overly dramatic viewpoint. Instead of writing about action and doing more research to put perspective on the action, the author is too caught up with his emotions and thoughts. This makes it a very boring read (well, okay, "listen" in my case).

I get bored and cynical during the author's soliloquies and just find them annoying. It is maddening when he writes about what he reads in peoples' eyes or deep in their "being." Please!

I was hoping for a read similar to Currahee but it seemed like forever for the action to get started. Also, too much of the book is devoted to the author's early life in Texas. If you buy this book, I suggest you rip out the first two chapters. Boring, boring, boring. (Not the author's fault - I blame the editor.)

I would have given it 1 star but for great respect I have for WWII veterans. If you are looking for a great WWII read try the books mentioned above.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing true story that ought to be made into a film........2004-03-13

I listened to this book as an unabridged book on CD and it was just an excellent true story. It follows Tommy from his youth in Texas, through joining the army air force because patriotism and a love of flying when the war broke out, going to England, then being shot down over France in his B-17, joining the French resistance, being betrayed to the Germans by a French traitor on the eve of his return to England, being sentenced to death as a spy by the Germans, at the last minute being sent to a POW camp instead, then more camps as he was moved further ever more east, then his escape, then joining with a Russian army unit attacking from the East, seeing the Mongolian terror troops the Russians were using the scare the hell out of even the SS, meeting and falling in love with the beautiful Rosa when the Russians captured the concentration camp she was being held in, finally the end of the war, return to France with his beloved Rosa with the intent to take her back to Texas and then a surprise ending that just kicks the wind out of you because you think it's building up to a big happy ending. Reality is not like that.

A fantastic read (or listen) and it's all true.

By the way, the beautiful girl Tommy fell in love with, Rosa, was a Polish girl, not a Russian like the Amazon book rview says. To call her a Russian in light of what happens at the end of the book is an outrageous error.

5 out of 5 stars A FULFILLING READING EXPERIENCE.......2002-06-05

Smack dab in the middle of a great, true, WWII story of yearning, fulfillment, capture and escape is a great love story worthy of a poet's description. This book will put you on a roller coaster ride that you will not soon forget; one of the best books I have read this year !

5 out of 5 stars A unique war memoir.......2002-04-02

One Man's War is the gripping and harrowing memoir of Tommy Lamore, who served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. The bright-eyed kid from Waco, Texas, who had always dreamed of being a flier, soon learned that war is not just guts and glory. As a B17 tailgunner flying bombing missions over Europe, Lamore experienced the nerve-shattering onslaught of noise and violent motion, the sustained panic of a man fighting for survival against skilful foes and just plain bad luck.

The accounts of these battle scenes expertly evoke the sights and sounds of air battle. Flak barrages, numbing cold, hurtling fighter planes trying to shoot Lamore out of the sky; it really feels that personal. We feel the relief of the arrival of American air cover, we are heartened by the sight of safe haven, and we are awed by the courage it took to fight off the sheer exhaustion and fear, just to get back up in the air and do it all again.

When Lamore's plane was downed by a freak accident over France, he was sheltered by local people, evaded Nazi search parties and was recruited by the French Resistance. His training in munitions made him valuable in sabotage operations, and for a while he lived an dangerous and exciting undercover life.

His sudden betrayal to the Gestapo led him to the hell-on-earth of the Nazi prison camps. The physical and psychological tortures and a dipththeria epidemic took their toll, but Lamore survived with his spirit intact, finally escaping from a death-camp on the German-Polish border. Luckily, he encountered the advancing Russian Army, and joined them as they pushed the Germans back towards Berlin. He found he was traveling with a Mongolian Terror-Troop unit. It is not often that Americans can read of the Russians' contribution to winning the war, let alone the Mongolians', and these passages are memorable. I found myself wondering what it was that made Mongolian fighting methods seem even more barbaric than the Europeans'. Was it just the context of European soil? Or some holdover from the 'chivalry' of classic European-style warfare? Were they more likely to kill you than any other soldier? Whatever it was, they scared the hell out of the Germans.

One Man's War contains another unique twist - a love story in the midst of horror. The Russian unit liberates a women's prison camp, where unspeakable crimes have been committed. Among the freed prisoners is a Polish woman, Rosa, who speaks English. She and Lamore fall in love, comforting and healing each other as they continue onwards with the Mongolian unit.

Eventually, the cease-fire is announced and Lamore makes contact with British troops. He and his beloved Rosa make their way to Paris, where Lamore's dream of bringing her to the States is dashed. Rosa knows she must return to Poland to find her family. Lamore has to let her go, with just a ring to remember her by.

The final episode in the book is also the final straw. Lamore is ordered to return to the death camp from which he escaped, to help the Red Cross document the slaughter that happened there shortly after Lamore's got away. The sight and smell of the place, the memories and nightmares it evokes, push Lamore over the edge into deep despair and fatigue, and he is shipped back to the States.

The sad, but essential, message of this superb story is the horrific toll that war takes, even on the victors. Here, in this book, we witness the worst depravities of which we are capable, the despair and the clawing fear, the paralyzing exhaustion. But also, the hope that even in the midst of the hell we create for ourselves, there is redemption in love, even if only for a while. Lamore was deeply affected, as any sane person would be, by his experiences, but around his neck until he died in 1997 hung the ring that Rosa gave him in Paris.

One Man's War is a finely-written book. Congratulations to Dan A. Baker for capturing Tommy Lamore's unique story so brilliantly, and bringing it so vividly to life.

5 out of 5 stars A Soon To Be Classic.......2002-03-13

When I first read the dust jacket and saw all the things that Tommy LaMore had to endure during his tour of duty in WWII my first thought was "this must be fiction". Well, it is all true and truly amazing. I have read many personal memiors about WWII and I compare all I read to the two best one: "The Forgotten Soldier" and "With The Old Breed". This book is witout a doubt in that class. I don't say that lightly. Mr. LaMore goes from being a tail gunner on a bomber, to being shot down, to the French underground, to the Soviet army approaching Berlin. Along the way, you will meet some really unique characters. My favorite is the Soviet commander who takes a liking to Tommy and tries to keep him safe until he can be turned over to the British. You will also meet the love of his life when he encounters a womens concentration camp and discovers a beautiful polish surviver. Their story alone is worth the price of the book. Outstanding! I won't tell you how it ends but please, please, get this book. You will remember it long after the last page is turned.

I listened to this book on tape...very well read with that British humor glinting through. It made a long car trip really fun. The stories have interesting characters, both animal and human, and give a personal glimpse into the lives of people and their pets. The human side of the stories is as interesting as the animals are, and the word pictures of life in pre-war Britain are made me long for a simpler life and time.

While I acknowledge the truth that opinions are like a-holes...everyone has one...and I honor the right of free expression, I think some folks don't know the difference between the two. Those who blast something they haven't even tried and claim to be scientists are actually hilarious to me.

What is science? It's considering as many of the variables as possible, forming a hypothesis, carefully testing with an open mind and accurately recording the results. Those who dismiss something they haven't even tried are not scientists, they are little closed-minded robots just spouting what they've been told. Science is discovery and discovery only happens when you are capable of saying "I don't know."

The correlation between blood types and different lifestyles is overwhelming in the anecdotal literature and the true scientists are working on compiling more information for further investigation.

The bottom line is very simple. Just try it with an open mind for a goodly amount of time -- a few months would be great, but most people notice changes in the first few weeks -- really follow the guidelines for your blood type -- at least 80%-90% -- keep a journal recording what you notice (again OPEN MIND!) and THEN form an opinion.

Unless you have the stuff to really conduct your own scientific experiment, in my book, your opinion has NO credence. If you've done a truly open-minded, whole-hearted experiment for yourself and it doesn't work for you, then your opinion has some merit and I'm willing to listen. But then I keep seeing over and over again the stories of those who did their experiment skeptically, even assuming it wouldn't help them, and then being amazed at how much it did help them.

I'm just starting my experiment and I'm complying between 95%-100%, which is very easy to do. So far I have pretty good energy, less allergic stuff and slightly better digestion, but I'm just one week into my experiment, and there are other factors that may be affecting the results. A longer trial will be necessary to get solid results. The jury is still out on the diet so I haven't formed an opinion one way or the other yet.

But, as you can undoubtedly tell, I sure do have an opinion about pseudo-scientists!!!

5 out of 5 stars Is dieting an exact science?.......2002-06-20

I think the "blood type" lifestyle is one that does work. What I can say..... is that I have been "eating right for my type" for three years now; and have maintained my weight and never feel like I am "dieting." While pregnant, I followed this plan about 80% and after I delivered, I followed it 100%. I gained 52lbs. during pregnancy and within 14 weeks, I had lost it all!! I think with any diet, you have to find the one that works best for YOU. My immediate, and most of my extended family, follow this method and it apparently works for all of them, so scientific or not, we are maintaining fabulous results. Who said dieting was an exact science anyway?

1 out of 5 stars Junk Science (1 star is as low as it goes).......2002-03-09

This idea that foods are "bad" for someone is not supportable with science. ANY food in great levels is "bad." NO food (That one is not allergic to) ia any worse than any other.

This is just a context of a person selling a book with an idea that is not supportable with science to gullable people. (Seems to be a common thing with the nutrition "experts" that all they do is make people afraid of something, then tell them to avoid it.)

5 out of 5 stars Easy Thank You Gifts.......2007-08-13

When I retired from teaching high school, I made gift jars for 11 support staff people who made my job easier - secretaries, guidance staff, attendance office staff, etc. They were thrilled. My favorites are Creamy Cheese Soup and Cheesy Potato Soup. I decorated the lids with circles of fabric and attached the recipe cards with raffia. Easy to do and a nice way to say thanks for 33 great years!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gifts for new parents, new neighbors or care pkgs.!.......2007-04-28

I like to give these soup gifts in a jar to expecting parents just before the baby arrives so they have a ready-to-go homemade meal on hand. I also add a California Corn Bread jar to go with the soup. I also like to include the canned items that need to be added like canned tomatoes, chicken, etc. to make it as easy as possible for them. These jars would make a great welcome gift to a new neighbor or to someone with a cold or recovering from the flu or other illness. I think it's just such a unique gift that is very useful and tasty, too!

I got this book with my Grandma in mind and I did use the recipes at
Christmas to make her soup mixes that she could use and she loved it.
For inexpensive or a little classy the ideas are overall good and you
can add your own special touches.

I've made most of the recipes in this book and they're all pretty good. The friendship soup is the best. I love the whole idea.

                              3 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-03-20

I purchased this book based on the other reviews. While there are a couple of patterns of interest in this book, I would not make the majority of them. Also, I didn't like that the yarn for the patterns is referred to by weight alone, and not by the actual brand used. I find that this makes it difficult to get an accurate gauge. I'm not a big fan of novelty yarns and there seem to be quite a few patterns that use them in this book.

                              5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-11-01

Carolyn Christmas comes up with the neatest patterns. This book is a little one but packed with lots of great patterns. I have to admit, the baby hat on the cover is my favorite pattern, but there are plenty of tempting patterns in this book.

Great book, great designer - definitely worth getting

                              4 out of 5 stars Has a wide variety.......2005-08-11

Although the physical size of Carolyn Christmas'(don't you just love her name?)book is small, the content is large, easy beginner items as well as something for the more experienced. What I especially liked was that there were T-shirt tops that even a novice could do, but the expert would be satisfied as well.
A good addition to any crochet library.

                              Book Description

Each year, as you prepare your garden, you know that sooner or later—in the spring or in the fall or in both—Jack Frost will pay you a visit. Knowing that, what can you do at the start of the gardening season to prepare for those frosty nights? In this book, all aspects of frost are explained to help gardeners start their planting earlier in the spring and extend their growing season later in the fall. You'll learn what weather systems produce frost, how it damages, or enhances, the flavor of your plants, how to read your garden's microclimate, and how to design your garden so you can work with frost, instead of against it. The informative text is paired with beautiful full-color photos of useful frost protection techniques and wonderful gardens in their full frosty splendor.

4 out of 5 stars Cold Climate Gardening.......2004-01-23

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I've got some nerve reviewing a book about frost. Yes, we do have frost here, but it isn't the problem here that it is in northern New York State where Philip Harnden lives.

So, for all the gardeners in the colder regions of the US and Canada, here is a really useful book that explains how to outwit the weather and extend the spring and fall seasons. The writer is concerned primarily with the kitchen garden, mostly vegetables. You won't find much about flowers in here, although much of the advice would apply to most plants. What you WILL find is ways that determined gardeners even in New Hampshire manage to harvest at least a few vegetables all winter long. Even in Maine one couple enjoys a "four season harvest". An added pleasure in this book is the well-selected photography of plants and gardens in frosty weather.

If frost is a problem in your garden you'll enjoy reading this practical and down-to-earth book. This writer has been there, done that when it comes to cold climate gardening. The book is well-researched, well-written and contains a goodly number of resources for further exploration.

The soil should be well composted and fertilized and seedlings should be thinned carefully to keep plants close together to hold in moisture. The plants will need to be shaded with a cloth covered frame.

                                Book Description

Dr. Steven D. Hsi, a family physician and father of two young sons, was diagnosed in 1995 with a rare coronary disease that caused his death five years later at the age of forty-four. Throughout his ordeals as a patient, including three open-heart surgeries, Dr. HsiÂ's outlook on the teaching and practice of medicine changed. In 1997 he began a journal intended for publication after his death. Written with the assistance of newspaper columnist Jim Belshaw and completed posthumously by HsiÂ's widow, Beth Corbin-Hsi, Dr. HsiÂ's writings urge his colleagues to become healers, to look at their patients as human beings with spiritual as well as physical lives.

“Every patient should read it, if only to be made aware that they are not alone with their thoughts. Every spouse of a patient should read it. . . . Every medical student and physician should read it to learn that the biology of the disease is really just a small part of the illness.”—John Saiki, M.D., Medical Oncology, University of New Mexico

“Dr. Steven Hsi asks his fellow doctors to be more than physicians. He asks them to be healers. He says that when he thinks of healers, he sees traditional medicine men, people who are integral parts of their communities. They are in touch physically and spiritually with the people they serve.”—Tony Hillerman

“Every patient should read it, if only to be made aware that they are not alone with their thoughts. Every spouse of a patient should read it . . . . Every medical student and physician should read it to learn that the biology of the disease is really just a small part of the illness.”—John Saiki, M.D., Medical Oncology, University of New Mexico

I am a nursing student. I happened to notice this title on amazon. I have to tell you, that I know that I will be a better nurse because I read this book. I think that it should be a mandatory part of the curriculum in the every program for all of the health care professions. It is very difficult sometimes, to know what it is like for the patient. This book made that realization abunduntly clear. Dr. Hsi's story is an inspiration. Definitely read this book, whether you are a health care worker, a patient, or just looking for a good book to read!

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Soulful Book.......2004-08-10

He describes so well what family members go through when a loved one is terminally ill. Doctors do need to look at the whole person, their family and their spiritual side and treat people holistically.
He spoke quite well of the pain that is often inflicted on those who are the most helpless by those in the position to be most helpful. This definetly is a gift to be given to those in the medical field or those who are thinking of entering it.
Steve was my doctor when I was growing up and we went to the same church. I remember praying for him when the calls would go out that he needed surgery while praying for my aunt who was terminally ill at the same time...what he describes about being a patient is not far off from what my Aunt experienced while she was hospitalized in Arizona.

5 out of 5 stars The head of the nail has been struck!.......2004-03-29

As a brief patient of Dr. Hsi's and a memeber of the healthcare industry for 25 years, this book struck at the core of my very being. I not only see what he experienced everyday in my line of work but also expierienced it on a different level for myself. Anyone thinking of pursueing a career in medicine, should let this book open your eyes and your heart. It would make sense to have this be required reading for every nurse, pre-med student, intern, resident or seasoned physician. I know with some it would fall on deaf ears, however if it only made a difference in a few, what a difference it could make in so many lives.
Many thanks to Beth Corbin-Hsi, Jim Belshaw and of course Steven D. Hsi, M.D who gives us wisdom and courage through his words even now.

To say that this is a profoundly moving work is understatement. It should be mandatory reading for any patient or care giver, but more especially for any who would be called "Healer". Simply stated ... closing the chart is a magnificient work. It will no doubt become highly acclaimed and will be appreciated by any care giver or patient in the modern world of medicine. It is rich in texture and flavor, providing a remarkable insight into the progression of change that occurs when a family is faced with a profound illness, and must come face to face with the methdologies of modern medicine. This work will provide the next level of understanding in the process of illness, such as that initiated by Norman Cousins in Anatomy of An Illness.

I received this book three days ago and could not put it down. I knew when the work week ended, I could finish this compelling,
eye-opening story of a man's most personal thoughts and heart-wrenching feelings for his family, his disease and his God. Every doctor in the country should read this book and ask if they see themselves in it.

                                Book Description

Ninety-year-old artist Lee Allen, whose retina was beginning to suffer from age-related macular degeneration, realized that he could see the defects in his vision. For a decade he studied these defects and carefully drew pictures of the holes in his vision, showing the way they changed with time and with laser surgery. Macular degeneration is the most common cause of blindness among older people in the industrialized world.

This important book, set in type most visually impaired people can read, includes information about macular degeneration and comments from Lee's doctor and colleagues.

4 out of 5 stars Macular Degeneration: Perceptions and Drawings of an Artist.......2000-09-02

This is a unique book illustrated and written by an accompished medical illustrator, Lee Allen, and two EyeMDs, ophthalmologists H. Stanley Thompson, MD and James C. Folk, MD. Anyone faced with losing vision from macular degeneration the most common cause of blindness in individuals over the age of 50 will benefit from reading this book.

Lee Allen at 87 Lee Allen's life was always about drawing and painting. He worked as a young man under Grant Wood. But during the Great Depression of the 1930's, he needed a way to survive so he took a job as an artist that was being offered by Dr. C. S. O'Brien in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa. The unwritten deal between these two men was that Allen would, for the moment, put aside his aspirations in the fine arts and concentrate on becoming the best ophthalmic illustrator in the country. O'Brien asked Lee to attend all the lectures offered to the ophthalmologists in training, to take his work to national meetings, and to publish his findings under his own name in the ophthalmic literature, whether he had the appropriate academic degrees or not. Lee Allen took this contract seriously.

In this book, a biographical sketch of Lee Allen reviews some of his many accomplishments and contributions to ophthalmic practice.

When Lee was 78, he began to recognize the first signs of age-related macular degeneration in his left eye. Naturally he began to sketch them. There never was anyone better equipped by training and long experience to describe the particulars of age-related macular degeneration, from the inside out, than Lee Allen. He has just the right combination of skill, experience and persistence to draw what he sees.

If you learned from Henry Grunwald's book: Twilight:Losing Sight and Gaining Insight you will find this "atlas" and biographical sketch of Lee Allen's very informative.
