4 out of 5 stars One Good Soldier.......2003-03-24

This book is another well done look at Rutherford B. Hayes by Dr. Ari Hoogenboom. In this volume the author tells the story of Hayes' Civil War experiences.

Before joining up Hayes was not enthused about the War. But as a soldier he quickly became convinced of the value of his mission. By the end of 1861 he had come to see the war as "a crusade against slavery."

Hayes started out as a major in the 23rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He soon rose to colonel. By the end of the war he was a general. He served four years in all (1861-1865). Hayes last battle was in October, 1864. While still on active duty the voters of Cincinnati elected him to Congress.

Hayes' war action was mostly in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. William McKinley stated that when Hayes was in battle he was "intense and ferocious." He was wounded five times in action but maintained his enthusiasm for being a soldier. He proved himself a capable officer who earned the respect of his men. He often defeated the enemy and helped achieve ultimate Union victory.

Hayes had the luxury of seeing his family several times during the War. He wrote numerous letters home and kept a diary. These writings proved invaluable sources for this book.

This book provides numerous detailed maps of the battles which Hayes fought in. There are also several bios given of the various generals Hayes served under or against.

Dr. Hoogenboom clearly understood Rutherford B. Hayes and described him accurately. The reader gets a clear picture of the 19th President before he attained that office.

    5 out of 5 stars A very helpful guide.......2006-06-09

I was able to understand so much more about the history of the human body, and health, as a result of reading this book. His down to earth style is refreshing, given the fact that medical articles can be difficult to comprehend. The book is his opinion on many of the issues facing people who are trying to be more responsible for the upkeep of their own bodies. He distills and summarizes many important area's of health into a clear and very helpful guide.

I liked the book, however I don't agree with all of it. There are some good ideas in it that I can use for my work.

3 out of 5 stars Born to be Healthy and Thin.......2006-03-15

As a chemist I found a few errors in his book such as the one on page 141 where he is discussing trans-fatty acids. I have heard Dr. Komadina speak and he is a compeling and charismatic speaker. He really looks healthy and trim.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read and Easy to Understand.......2005-12-27

This book is so easy to read with the large type and so easy to understand that I could not put it down. I buy a lot of books, but usually don't read them or don't read all of them. This book was an exception. In 3 days I had read it cover to cover and started to reread it and underline the following day.

I found the concepts made sense and I went to the grocery store with a whole new commitment to do it right this time. If you are looking for a book you will love to read and hate to put down, this is it. I have given 4 copies to family members already and they are actually thanking me, not considering it meddling in their lives.

I just want to read the next book this author comes out with. This one was a home run!

I prefer being positive. Sorry, this time I cannot do so. I've found NOTHING useful inside the covers. Cutesy titles and recipes, any of us amateurs could come up with simply by looking in the pantry and frig.
I'll gladly mail the book to anyone willing to pay my cost of packaging and postage.
My suggestion is do a search or two for wing recipes. Save your money.

    5 out of 5 stars YES! I AM A WING NUT!.......2005-02-04

i came to be a fan of Wings relatively late, only a couple of years ago. I always consdidered them not worth the trouble to make or eat given the amount of meat on the bones. But I was really transformed a few years ago at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and their many varieties of wings and sauces. They were not just heat but spice as well and i soon began experimenting with my own buffalo style wings and hit upon a method that friends always demand. I would put mine at medium hot in terms of their heat.

This wonderful little book comes along with 150 wing recipes from traditional buffalo wings to international recipes from the Caribbean, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and more. There are so many varieties that you just won't know where to begin. I've only made about a half dozen which I always make 3 or 4 different varieties of wings for parties.

The Cajun Wings are a nice change of pace with the Cajun spices making it still hot but with a distinctly different taste than the average hot wing. There's the Die-Hard Dijon wings with a fantastic savory flavor. And of course Teriyaki wings are one of my favorites. But it's not just wings. There's receipes for dipping sauces as well as a number of salads to compliment the wings. Truly an indispensible book for any wing fan!

5 out of 5 stars No wonder it's a hard to find book ... Superb recepies ...........2003-09-29

I think I saw the author on one of the talking heads morning programs preparing some chicken wing recepie, which then made it difficult for me to find the book anywhere later in the day.

Now that I have had a chance to, of course, get the book and try some of the recepies I can certainly attest to the reason it was hard to get. WOW ... even though we may all have fallen into the pit of deep frying wings and buying buffalo wing sauces at the local Piggely Wiggely .... this book will blow out all of your chicken wing pre-conceptions ....

There are suaerbraten wing recepies, hoisin sauce recepies, sour cream recepies and so on and so forth, all of them exquisite, and a taste sensation. The recepies are very varied in the basic prep of the wings and most do not take that many steps. There are a multitude of flavours to choose from ranging from the dark sweet brown sugar glazed wings to spicy Eastern wings made with chutney or hoisin sauce to tangy sour European style wings.

The 'Desert Fox Wing' recepie (page 79) for example, uses orange juice, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, lemon and orange zest, rosemary, thyme, oregano, cardamon, cumin, tumeric and of course salt in the preparation of the marinade .... WOW .... how many chickens did they have to kill just to get that list of ingredients .....

The book has a few B&W pictures on how to prep the wings but they have no pictures of dish presentation... I can understand that since all you really need is just a roll of paper towells and a beer ... Some of the recepies have a history or a restaurant tied to them and some, I guess, are just from the author.... The book is 203 pages long and I would estimate then that it must have well over 130 recipies

Like I said ... don't expect this book to be picked up on the cheap but do RUN and buy a copy ..... then call me and invite me over for wings and a beer ... LOL

    5 out of 5 stars A great investment.......2003-09-04

I picked up this book at the buffalo wing festival last year and I'm still inspired by the ton of recipes in the book. Definitly worth it!

    4 out of 5 stars Wings--wonderful--Wings.......2000-04-17

Even here in the colder, more remote parts of the world, one occasionally gets a tremendous craving for WINGS, which of course is exacerbated by the fact that the nearest restaurant that serves wings is three hours away. So, on those rare occasions when the Chicken Truck doesn't accidentally take a wrong turn at Tok, heading north to Fairbanks instead of south to Soldotna, and I can find wings at the grocery store, I take heart and reach for the Wings Across America Cookbook. For the most part, I have learned new tricks from Chef Vanderstigchel--two favorites are Hoisin Scallion Wings (p. 93) and Great Wings of Astoria (p. 119)--and I keep promising to invite friends over for wings but...what the heck. Life is short and we don't want to share. Having cooked through many of the recipes, I have noticed several problems: some seem repetitive (same ingredients from one recipe to the next), several recipes rely on prepared sauces (store teriyaki sauce--yuck--or specific brands of hot sauces & barbecue sauces) and finally, other recipes are simply not as spicy as advertised, Tripwire Wings (p. 85). This last problem could be due to the inferior quality of local jalapeno peppers or it may be that my tastebuds are burned out. But, these minor problems aside, this is a good cookbook, which has been a welcome addition to our cooking library and I never, ever lend it out. So, you'll have to get your own.

    5 out of 5 stars Misunderstood Verbage.......2005-06-13

I directly asked Ms Hannibal about the comment. "Smart" in the UK does not mean intelligence. She meant it as a "look". Her meaning was that white Boxers do not have the same look at fawn or brindle Boxers. Take it for what it's worth, but she did not mean American readers to read she was saying a white Boxer is less intelligent than a fawn or brindle Boxer.

Those that wrote the 2 comments against that single line in the book are Americans and thusly would have read it differently than someone in the UK. Ms Hannibal assured me she has no ill feelings towards white Boxers at all. I single line of misunderstanding does not undermine the entire content of this book. I would not have lent my precious photos to her efforts if I felt she harbored ill will towards Boxers.

1 out of 5 stars Author Gives Prejudicial Opinions.......2003-04-22

The publishing house putting together this series of books made a poor choice in the author for this volume. She loses all credibility when she makes the outrageous statement that white boxers aren't as smart as fawns or brindles. No scientific data supports this view and anyone who has shared his home with white boxers, as well as the others, knows it is untrue. The opinion of the author would be laughable if it didn't prejudice prospective owners and keep so many bright, sweet white boxers from finding the loving homes they deserve.

1 out of 5 stars Has Sharon Hannibal ever met a white boxer?.......2003-03-12

On page 12 of this book is this quote regarding all white boxers (approx 25% of all boxers born) "They (white boxers) are perfectly acceptable as companion dogs although they do not resemble the typical, smart Boxer that most people imagine". I don't know where Ms. Hannibal got her information from but white boxers are at least as smart as fawn or brindle dogs - the original boxers were white, and many white boxers hold agility, obedience, tracking and schutzhund titles. They also are EXACTLY the same as the colored boxers in personality (I've had the pleasure of being owned by both). If a statement this wildly erroneus is in the book - how can you trust the rest of what is says??

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-04-03

This is one of the most exciting and inspiring books for scrap quilts. Excellent discussions on what design choices contribute to good results or if you drop the "S" that is what your quilt result could be.

5 out of 5 stars Great scrap buster!.......2004-06-04

This book has helped me to clear out all those pieces of fabric that are not small enough to throw out but not big enough to use. I have gotten into the habit of cutting my little leftovers into 2x3.5" rectangles. These little blocks go together so quickly that I've put one top together (lap size) in just a couple hours of sewing! This is a book to add to your collection. I originally checked it out of my library but I quickly realized it was one I wanted to have on hand!

    5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2003-12-12

I love this book. The patterns are simply made but are stunning to see. I have made (with my sister) four quilts based on what this book taught me. In addition, the book is interesting to read and the photography is excellent. This books continues to inspire new quilt ideas for us. It's well worth having in your quilt book library! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Simple sophistication.......2003-08-18

I think this book is fantastic!. I like to see my ideas come to life quickly and this book has helped me to experiment with colout in an effective way - easily. I have made three very different quilts that have been much admired (I enjoy them too!)and know this is a technique I can use again and again. I've also introduced children and novice pals to patchwork using this book as a guide - a great present. Colour is everything and hints on using colour and tone help a lot if you aren't sure which way to go.

    5 out of 5 stars Irresistible!.......2002-11-22

When I first looked through this quilt book I knew that it was one I was going to have to have eventually, even though the price seemed a bit steep. I was particularly struck by a design called "Bento Box" which is made up of Japanese fabrics - completely made of rectangles which are cut 2"X31/2" and combine Japanese indigos with colorful kimono type fabrics. There were several other very attractive quilts, including the one featured on the cover. I realized that what I like best are quilts that combine simple piecing with colorful, interesting fabrics, and that is the basis of this book. If you feel the same way, I highly recommend this book.
I also thought the introduction (which describes the collaboration of the two women who wrote the book together) was touching.

    3 out of 5 stars Well, it's a nice idea..........2006-02-21

Hey, guys. This manual describes the design of a small farm, listing all the plants and animals that have been introduced and the various earthworks that were carried out. The whole enterprise appears to be extraordinarily expensive and beyond the means of all but the well-to-do middle-class. Moreover, the large size of the property to feed a mere handful of people seems extravagant.

The author's views regarding what should be done and what shouldn't be done at times appears to be as much hearsay as anything. Some of it is blatantly absurd in the context: For instance, the farm relies heavily on the import of organic grain in order to feed the chickens. Far be it for me to recommend for or against purchasing this book; at least it allows one to daydream about having such a place, however unlikely it is (in my opinion) that permaculture constitutes a formula for a more sustainable world.

    5 out of 5 stars A site report from a master designer.......2005-07-13

David Holmgren, co-originator of the permaculture concept, has made a valuable contribution to ecological design by documenting the planning and construction of his 1 hectare homestead in Victoria, Australia. This large-format book details his site analysis using zone-and-sector and other permaculture tools, land use history, microclimate and soil types, and other criteria that guided his home-site selection, planting strategies, water systems, and passive-solar design.

Idealists may quibble with Holmgren's decisions to use nearby grid power (off-grid systems being far more expensive), small engines (indispensible to all farmers), and a farm truck (the only vehicle shown in the book), but these choices point to the real value of the work: what happens when sustainable design is attempted in the real world. Holmgren is honest about where he compromised and where he held fast. What distinguishes his efforts from a typical back-to-the-land farm is the use of sophisticated design tools that reduce energy use, conserve soil and water, emphasize perennial species and natural materials, and apply patterning tools to the overall design. One look at the design and implementation and it will be obvious that permaculture design offers a far better toolkit than conventional methods.

A fine field report from a master designer. I wish there were more such site reports from ecological designers.

3 out of 5 stars Permaculture? It's not so hard after all........2004-09-23

This large format book discloses a lot of the more questionable claims of the Permaculture movement. Holmgren is neither a highly qualified nor a particularly scientific advocate of the system that he claims joint ownership of originating. In this book we discover that using Permaculture a small family may still possess two cars; it's okay to be on the electricity grid and any number of modern appliances from computers to light engines may be used in your 'Permaculture' system. Really the whole thing amounts to little more than recreational farming. I have rated this book as three stars because it is an important read for anyone interested in the truth behind the field. However, in general it is an unimpressive collection of notes from someone designing a small farm.

More recent books on the market have more up to date information. A better one would be Midlife Motherhood, by Jann Blackstone-Ford.

    5 out of 5 stars good resource.......2002-12-31

I have to disagree with other reviewers who have found this book discouraging and scary. I have had the opposite reaction. I found this book very encouraging and informative. For example, the author talks about certain medical problems occurring more for older moms than younger moms (e.g., gestational diabetes and hypertension). The author also points out that moms of all ages face these medical problems, and that age is only one factor that increases your chances of having these conditions (weight is another factor). I also like the fact that the author clearly asserts that age alone does not make a pregnancy high-risk.

The author also cites empirical research throughout the book, and anecdotal research as well. She also provides statistics that I found refreshing (e.g., in the 1920's, the average age for having a last baby was 42, and in 1945 57 in 1000 women aged 35 to 39 had babies). She follows these statistics by saying, "contemporary women are mostly very different from their ancestors at age 35 and over and have great advantages..." She then goes on to talk about how contemporary women have many strengths, including better prenatal care.

I learned a great deal about how to prepare for conception in reading this book, including fertility awareness, and the possible impact of substances such as caffeine on fertility. I learned that although scientific studies indicate that fertility takes a dip around age 35 and a larger dip around age 39, every day nearly 1200 babies are born to American mothers between 35 and 44. I found this to be another encouraging piece of information. Before reading this book, I was not aware of everything to address in the preconception physical exam with a physician, such as catching up on immunizations and learning whether there are environmental hazards in your community or workplace.

Perhaps most reassuring to me was this, "Outside of the increase in chromosomal abnormalities, a healthy 35-plus woman without pregnancy complications is as likely as a younger woman to have a baby without medical problems." Even so, for a 37 year old woman, the risk of having a Down's syndrome baby is 1 in 227. The book is highly informative about a range of other issues too, such as amniocentesis and other prenatal tests, and your pregnancy month by month.

I highly recommend this book and found it to be supportive, encouraging, practical, and backed up by research.

2 out of 5 stars Scary and Discouraging.......2002-12-10

Someone gave me this book when I became pregnant with my first child at age 34. I have to agree with most of the other reviewers. This book does absolutely NOTHING to settle the mind of a woman of "advanced maternal age." Get "What to Expect When You're Expecting" instead. It's gentle and encouraging and most of the info applies to expectant moms of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars encouraging and practical.......2001-09-10

I found the information in the book to be quite positive and helpful. It's not overly scientific but does provide the information most needed for women over 35 to make pregnancy decisions.

2 out of 5 stars too little, too late.......2001-05-21

There is very littl information on pregnancy itself in this book, but LOTS aobut how horribly difficult it is to get and stay pregnant if you are older.

I found this book uninformative and scary. I much prefer Your Over-35 Week by Week Pregnancy Guide. It has lots of information, is well organized and easy to read and is thorough without being scary.

    Product Description

Sherman Alexie's poetic power renders an honest and painful perception of contemporary Native American life. In this collection, Alexie, a poet of the Coeur d'Alene people, speaks for the spirit of Native American resistance, determination, and sovereignty, compelling readers to confront reality with his honest and inspiring vision. Remarkable in its candor and gracefully constructed, this collection of poems binds us to the present and, at the same time, connects us to the voices of the past.

5 out of 5 stars A real role Model for writers.......2002-10-17

For a long time I heard little bits and pieces about a poet named Sherman Alexie. I would see his name appear here and there, or a few words speak of him, and then I would lose track. After Smoke Signals came out, I vowed that I would remember Sherman Alexie and read more of what he had to say.

Years passed, to my shame. As a writer I was probably afraid on some level to begin reading his work because I had heard of his amazing success at a young age, but more important, his amazing output.

I finally decided to get a book, and I chose to buy Old Shirts & New Skins. I absolutely love it. The poems and the stories wonderfully compliment each other and tell a story of identity and pride. I really enjoyed the biting humor. it rang so completely true, I sometimes could not contain myself.

Based upon what I have read in this book, I will definately keep reading and buying his books.

    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2000-11-28

This book seems simpler than Alexie's later works, though by no means do I mean that in a literal way. Later works reveal a deep and complex style and voice. This book, an early piece, shows what is to come. Alexie's voice is strong and powerful, with very pointed pieces arranged in creative and innovative ways. This is a stepping-stone book into his heavier works, such as Summer of Black Widows and One Stick Song. You can definitly see where Alexie is going in this book...up.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and true.......2000-05-05

This book of poetry has a real quality, a sort of grittiness so you know it's true.

The poems tie together present miseries with the history of Indian wars. But of course it's not the version of Indian wars we got through the movies; rather it is the untold part, of suffering of native people defending their way of life.

I am new to Sherman Alexie and new to American Indian literature; I came upon him through his movie "Smoke Signals." It's very good reading!

His writing contains heavy themes, but is light and graceful and has a healing quality. "Shirts" and "Skins" are the team names in pickup baasketball games; "'skins" is how Indians call themselves. I dont know what a "shirt" is - a white guy, probably -- that would fit. There is humor, word play and joy here holding up a world of sadness.

Tim Miller became famous for two not unrelated reasons: taking his clothes off during his (critically acclaimed) performance art pieces and being seriously chastised by Senator Jesse Helms for doing so by having his National Endowment for the Arts grant rescinded. Miller's genius has always been his just-folks approach to talking about his life and sexuality. His memoir, Shirts and Skin, which uses excerpts from his performance scripts, is a genial, witty, and engrossing portrait of the artist as a young satyr. Moving easily from tales of school and sex to love and sex to work and sex, Shirts and Skin entertains and illuminates the importance of the erotic in everyday life. Always graphic but never prurient, Miller consistently manages to make sex into healthy, good, clean, American fun. Take that Senator Helms.

5 out of 5 stars Searingly honest account from one of our best solo artists.......2000-02-03

I read every single word in this book. I suppose the first and obvious thing to say is that as with Tim Miller 'the performance artist' with Tim Miller 'the writer' there is the same integrity and raw honesty. There are times you squirm, and there are times you smile...

Someone once said "if something is human it is mentionable, and if it is mentionable it is manageable." Here we see Miller warts and all. He acknowledges how open relationships can cost you a loss of intimacy with your primary partner. Above all we experience his fearlessness which many of us have experienced when seeing him perform on stage, even when it leads to his near-capture by the Moonies.

Tim Miller's delight in life and the experiences it offers made this a book I took around with me for several days until I had read every last word.. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars sexy, juicy, smelly stories of hopes, dreams, and community........1999-07-06

This is the complete TIM MILLER, in the sense we see a full his-story of the texts which his performance works are based on. Miller is known as the New York City Gay spoken word artist/ NEA-4 artist-funding controversy that sparked a generation of avant-garde identity-politics performance art movement. Shirts and Skin is Tim's "Greatest Hits", which includes most of Miller's publicy/performance photos from the past 20 years of performance art. Its good reading, its energetic, melodic writing might just spark another revolution of gay male identity, or at least reading this book gives you a sense history surrounding gay politics of the 1980 and mid 90's. Some may find it gratuitous for Mister Miller to be doing a retrospective-like book at such a young age (he just turned 40). By putting his best works in a single text, Miller puts forth inadvertently a very nice retrospective of his life. Buy this book not because Christian hate-mongers don't want you to read it, buy it beacuse its a inspiring journal of the life of a truly remarkable white gay man from southern california. Beacause gentle words of love and passion can change minds, moods and stimulate the consciousness of a whole nation.

1 out of 5 stars "Shirts & Skin": clothed in disappointment.......1998-12-24

Tim Miller, one-time artistic nemesis of Jesse Helms and other conservative senators out to purge the National Endowment for the Arts of "objectionable" grant recipients, misses a real opportunity in "Shirts & Skin." A collection of essays and remembrances in rough chronological order, the book is intended to act as an artistic and personal memoir. What it winds up being is a journey towards Miller's realization that having two boyfriends is fun. He almost never discusses his work, and then only in extremely vague and short detail. But the minutiae of his open relationship(s), unfortunately, takes up great areas of space. At the end of the book, one wonders why Helms and Co. objected to Miller: he seems boring, rather than subversize. Truly a missed opportunity for author and reader.

2 out of 5 stars please, no more narcisism!.......1998-10-24

Too bad Mr. Miller does not recognize the difference between performance art and biography. If he had, we might have been offered some insights into the meaning of his work as a performance artist, or the importance of art done by and for gay people. Instead, we are treated to breezy passages about Mr. Miller's sex life. If he could get beyond the 'gee whiz, this feels great' stage, there might be some erotic charge, but alas, no such luck.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and sexy with profound impact.......1998-08-29

I flew through this book. It was everything you would ever want it to be (you'll laugh, you'll cry, it's better than "Cats"). But, more than just being being entertaining, Miller forces queer men to examine their lives and our struggle. While laughing and crying (and fantasizing about the author) I really started to reexamine my queer politics, finding myself at a very different place than where I began. I am thankful for this opportunity to expand my thinking, and I hope everyone will read this book and begin challenging themselves in the same way I did.

From the author: The objectives of the study reported here were to document consumer attitudes, risk understanding, and behaviors with respect to sun safety and to define consumer preferences for protective shirt design and labeling. A sample of 1,508 adults was surveyed at the 2002 Farm Progress Show sun-safety exhibit. Results showed that people generally understood the long-term risk from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, but did not routinely use sun-protective clothing to avoid it. Design features preferred by consumers for sun-safe shirts were significantly related to demographic characteristics, including age, education, sex, occupation, and employment status. Overall, the sun-safe shirt design most preferred can be summarized as a casual-style, solid-color, knit shirt with a crew neck or collar. Over 80 percent of participants favored Ultraviolet Protective Factor labeling as well as other consumer labeling such as information on care, fiber content, colorfastness, and finishes applied to shirts. Industrial and educational implications are provided.
