Sherman's March.......2007-10-12
The difficulty for those of us interested in studying the American Civil War is that the available bibliography is overwhelmingly large. One could begin reading as a child and reach adulthood and continue reading until death or senility interrupted the exercise without completing all of the published titles! Life is too short to read poorly written books!
With that observation in mind, it is a welcome experience to occasionally come across a worthwhile one volume biography of a major historical figure and "Sherman: A Soldier's Passion for Order" fills the bill perfectly. The author, John F. Marszalek, is a history professor at Mississippi State University.
While it may strike some as odd that a historian employed on a campus located in the Deep South chose to write about General William T. Sherman, it is worth remembering that "Uncle Billy," himself, was a man of contradictions. Sherman tried and failed at many occupations during the antebellum period. One of the few successful and easily the most satisfying positions that he held was as the superintendent of a military academy located in Louisiana. But for the crisis of secession and war, Sherman would have been pleased to remain at the academy as a Southern gentleman and an accepted member of local society. The war came, however, and Sherman resigned his position and donned the blue Federal uniform. As a Union general, Sherman became the scrouge of the same South that he had so admired and enjoyed.
Sherman was adopted into the family of a prominent Ohio politician following the death of his father. This was the first of many disruptions in his life. His adoptive parents compelled him to change his actual first name from "Tecumseh" (after the celebrated Indian leader and warrior) to William. Marszalek sees many of Sherman's subsequent choices and decisions as part of a determined effort to create and maintain continuity, stability and order. As much as he loved the South, Sherman viewed secession and disunity as a form of anarchy that needed to be crushed. Similarly, the Indian tribes threatening the settlement of the frontier needed to be suppressed. Late in his life, Sherman resisted his wife's repeated entreaties to have him convert to Catholicism.
Marszalek also treats Sherman's friendship and eventual estrangement from Ulysses S. Grant. Sherman was devoted to the military and grew disillusioned when Grant chose to pursue a political career during the Reconstruction Era. Although both Grant and Sherman lived long enough to write memoirs, Grant's memoirs are better known on account of his superb ability as a writer. Unlike Grant, Sherman's own book generated more controversy than praise upon its publication (Grant defended Sherman's book, however, as providing accurate accounts and descriptions of events) and is not read as often today.
I have had the good fortune to have visited Grant's residence in Galena, Illinois and the former Galt House (the hotel still exists, but it has relocated to a much larger building several blocks away) in Louisville, Kentucky, where Grant and Sherman studied their maps and plotted the strategy that resulted in the eventual Union victory. Marszalek's book helped bring some of these same details to life for me as a reader. Recommended.
The South's Best Friend? (Could be).......2007-04-12
In this book, the author takes us on an in-depth tour of the life and times of William Tecumseh Sherman. In doing so, he lets us see Sherman as a boy living in poverty; as a nine-year-old foster child; and as a student, young soldier, husband, father, failed businessman, Civil War General, and aging military hero. In the end, we find that Sherman was very much like the rest of us: a man with hopes, dreams and fears of his own, and certainly not the crazed and often despised General who, according to legend, burned Atlanta to the ground and wantonly ravaged, pillaged, and plundered the South.
True, Sherman did order that all inhabitants of Atlanta be evacuated [705 adults (few men), 860 children, and 79 slaves], but that was to prevent snipers from killing his soldiers. And he did order that all facilities which could be used to support the war effort be destroyed (e.g., the railroad station; factories producing uniforms, munitions, railroad tracks; etc.). But that only amounted to about one third of the structures in Atlanta. And he did march the bulk of his 60,000 man army to Savannah living off the land. But he did so to help bring the Civil War to a speedy conclusion with minimum loss of life by severing the logistic supply lines across the South. And his orders were not to burn or destroy any private property, no matter what the inhabitants "said", as long as they were not fired upon.
And finally, and most revealing: When Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston was given the authority to surrender all remaining Confederate armies to General Sherman, Sherman met with him and developed what he thought were acceptable surrender terms. He forwarded them to Washington to obtain the necessary authorization only to find that his terms were considered much too soft on the South by then Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Stanton went so far as to send a letter to the New York Times accusing Sherman of TREASON and then attempted to have General Grant relieve him of his command. Grant met with Sherman but avoided doing so.
According to the evidence, then, William Tecumseh Sherman wasn't the crazed villain many in the South consider him to be. And maybe, just maybe, he was the best friend the South ever had, or at least he tried to be. In any event, after reading this biography, one can only wonder how many people now living in the South, who vilify Sherman's memory, owe their very existence to the fact that he decided to make war on property rather than on their forefathers.
Sherman a glorified war criminal.......2006-08-12
Sherman made war on women and children. He had his troops burned houses to the ground, turned a blind eye to the looting his men did, burned crops to the ground, destroyed any livestock he couldn't use and left the civilian population to starve to death everywhere he went in the South.
Sherman had town halls burned so there were no accruate records as to how large the population of the town he burned was. Sherman also removed large numbers of civilians (women and children)who worked at the New Manchester and Roswell, Georgia Mills, North; where many of them died of exposure or starvation. On the trip North many of these New Manchester, Roswell, Georgia Mill women workers were raped.
I am not a sympathizer for the Southern Cause during the American Civil War. However, I do believe that Sherman is a war criminal and shouldn't be idolized which this book does.
First in War, First in Peace!.......2004-02-07
William Tecumseh Sherman was an unusually good soldier. With the exception of Grant, he prosecuted the war as the South never imagined a Yankee could. He realized early on that this war would be long and brutal. He also realized that it would profoundly change the very nature of the United States.
John Marszalek gives the reader a man who never stops trying. From soldier to banker, from school teacher back to soldier, Sherman was a man who did his best all the time. He suffered quite a few set backs, some of them material, yet he always rebounded and it was this resiliency, this durability, that enabled him to persevere in his desire to end the Civil War in the only way he knew it could be ended, with the total destruction of the Confederacy.
Between Grant's war of attrition and Sherman's war of annihilation the rules of warfare were simply rewritten. Sherman was one of the greatest generals the Civil War produced. The story of his life is the story of a warrior. Seen by most historians as simply a destroyer, Marszalek justifiably points out that he just may have been one of the very best friends the South had.
You will enjoy this exceedingly well written book about an amazingly adaptive and creative man, one who fought hard for what he believed in and in so doing, laid the foundations for America as we know it today.
An interesting look at General Sherman.......2004-01-22
Marszalek's narrative of the life of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman focuses on order. It is Marszalek's contention that Sherman's early life left him with a lifelong fear of the disorganized, and that, for this reason, he strove to find and maintain order throughout his life. It is a compelling argument, and certainly worthy of consideration. Sherman WAS a stickler for order and discipline--his Civil War record testifies of that. Marszalek succeeds admirably in linking Sherman's earlier life to his later obsession with having things the 'right way.'
As a biography of Sherman, however, this volume falls short in many respects. Sherman's Civil War career is given only about 200 of 500 pages. The account is sparse, and seldom is enough detail given that anyone without a previous knowledge of Sherman's campaigns would be able to understand what is being narrated. The last 100 pages or so of the book are disappointing--instead of a detailed description of Sherman's later life, there is a rambling string of thoughts with little or no reference to very important events. Sherman's promotion to the rank of lieutenant general (and later full general), his appointment as chief of the army, and his post-war relationships with men such as Sheridan and Schofield are only vaguely alluded to, and are not actually treated as separate events. When describing Grant as the President of the United States, Marszalek expects the reader to be familiar with events surrounding his coming into the presidency. Grant's, Sheridan's, and even Sherman's wife Ellen's deaths are not described until the very last chapter, and then (with the exception of Ellen) with no more detail than the simple statement that they were dead.
Despite this failure of the latter part of the biography, Marszalek's work nevertheless is valuable. His analysis of Sherman's psyche is, for the most part, good (at least apart from the fact that nearly every early event in Sherman's early life is described as an 'omen' of things to come), and the argument he advances for why Sherman turned out the way he did is sound. Marszalek speaks at great lengths of Sherman's total war policy, but in this it seems, to me at least, that he is misunderstanding. His analysis of Sherman's military genius and the development of his strategy is admirable, but I do not agree with his labeling the advance on Atlanta total war. To me, at least, total war was the march to the sea, was the 50-mile swath of devastation left by Sherman's 'bummers' as they consumed everything of value in their path. Still, even if the label of total war is erroneously applied to all of Sherman's independent campaigns in 1864-65, Marszalek's examination of these campaigns, and examination what made Sherman proceed the way he did, is very thought-provoking.
I cannot call this the perfect work on Sherman, but I do believe it is good. Despite any other flaws, Marszalek is fair in his treatment of Sherman, and in that respect triumphs. In short, this is a good biography of a great man, and, even considering the disappointing last several chapters, worthy to be labeled good Civil War history.

This really works!.......2004-09-08
My son had over 8 ear infections from 9mths to the age of 2. Since we were able to tell that he had an ear infection and antibiotics worked, my pediatrician did not recommend tubes. We starting investigating alternatives to antibiotics after the last round killed the good bacteria in his GI tract and he had to go on other medication to clear that up.
We perform the massage suggested in the book once a day on him. (twice if he has a cold) It takes less than 5 minutes. My son hasn't had an ear infection in 1.5 years. He still gets colds and some times allergies, but they no longer cause ear infections.
I would recommend this book to everyone!
It does work!.......2002-09-11
I was very skeptical about this book when I ordered it, but my son had three ear infections by the time he was three months old. I was desperate. My pediatrician was already talking about tubes. Each day, I give him Dr. Block's massage. He has not had an ear infection in nine months. He has had colds and allergies, but he never develops an ear infection. No more sleepless nights or tummy aches from antibiotics. Thank you Dr. Block.
No More Ear Infections--It Worked For Us!.......2000-04-20
In this slim volume, Dr. Block not only explains what is wrong with the current system of antibiotic overuse for recurring ear infections, but also gives clear and concise steps for relieving and preventing ear infections in kids. Dr. Block gives nutritional guidelines, but more revolutionary is her osteopathic manipulation treatment--quick and easy massage movements to stimulate the child's own immune system and drain the fluids from the child's ears.
It seems so easy that it is hard to believe that these simple massages would have any effect. But, indeed, it really works. The times our child was on antibiotics, the ear infections went away and then came back quickly, with a vengeance. Since buying this book and using the techniques, our child has been infection-free and antibiotic-free.
Dr. Block is a genius and she's had experience with her own kids' terrible ear infections. This motivated her to come up with alternative techiques for curing ear infections. Now our children can benefit from her experience and expertise. Try it. Her advice is really effective, and all it costs you is the price of this book.

Great Cookbook.......2007-10-01
This is a wonderful book! I bought a copy when I attended a class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking but someone was "helping" me in the kitchen and spilled something on it. Most of the pages were stuck together before I found out about it. It has some of my very favorite recipes in it so I was glad to finally replace it with a new copy. Try the cookbook and if you are in Santa Fe, be sure to sign up for a great class at the School.
So So.......2007-05-18
Disappointed that this cookbook did not have more hints for cooking a high elevations with hispanic flavor.
An Essential Cookbook for Southwest Food Lovers.......2007-02-20
We consider this cookbook as one of the best southwest cookbooks available. Not only that, but we've been to the school in Santa Fe. It was a great experience to just be there. This cookbook is written by those living the culture of the foods. It's real stuff!
Collectible Santa Fe Cookbook.......2006-01-28
"The heart and soul of the School is the agriculture upon which the food is based. Many of the traditional methods of growing and processing regional foods - posole, atole, chicos - are almost lost arts. The Cooking School serves as a vehicle to expose and sustain traditional lifestyles." ~Introduction
The Santa Fe School of Cooking Cookbook is filled with pictures from the school and some of them are rather amusing, like the picture of the goats next to the recipe for Open-faced Quesadillas with Goat Cheese and Roast Peppers. Pictures of peppers roasting over an open grill and blue corn being crushed in a molcajete gives this cookbook a warm sunny personality.
I was especially appreciative of the section on the types of chiles. De Arbol, Serrano and Jalapeño are familiar, but Pasilla and Moritas are definitely new to me.
Delicious Recipes Include:
Blue Corn Pancakes
Guacamole
Black Bean Soup
Wild Mint and Lamb Soup
Jicama Salad with Watercress, Radishes, and Chiles
Chicken Enchiladas
Grilled Shrimp in Achiote Marinade
Sopaipillas
Spiced Winter Pears with Ginger Crème Sauce
The Indian Fry Bread is easy to make and makes you feel a different connection to the earth and culture. It is different to fry bread and makes you feel like you are participating in some ancient breadmaking ritual as you pat out the dough by hand (Or you can roll it out, but I learned how to make it that way from my father's sister).
The recipes for Fresh Tortillas will take your cooking to new levels or homemade bliss and there is also a recipe for Green Chile Sauce and the smoky dipping sauce called Chipotle. Spiced Bananas with Rum and a recipe for Pumpkin Cheesecake make this truly collectible. Each recipe has a story and there are cooks notes and plenty of pictures that will make you wish you were gathering the produce and walking through sunny fields of corn. I've walked barefoot in New Mexico and fell in love with the Sopaipillas and the warm earth and even survived a hailstorm in my "just purchased" car. Fortunately we found shelter fast.
This cookbook brought back so many memories! It might inspire a vacation to New Mexico.
~The Rebecca Review
festive and colorful.......2003-10-31
This useful book combines contemporary cuisine with its emphasis on color, freshness and health (lime marinated grilled salmon, quesadillas with goat cheese and roasted peppers, jicama salad with watercress, radish and chiles) with hearty traditional foods (enchiladas suizas with tomatillo and cilantro salsa, green chile and cabbage soup with sausage, chiles rellenos, black bean soup).
Curtis, owner of the school, scatters cooking tips throughout the book, paired with appropriate recipes - describing the character and history of blue corn with blue corn pancakes, giving the traditional version of carne adovada, a pork stew, along with the school version, using a comal (griddle) for making tortillas. Illustrated with Santa Fe scenes, gardens, ingredients and dishes, this is a festive book chock full of detail.

Tons of Charts.......2007-01-24
If you're looking for charts for really cool colorwork this is your book. There's some history in here too...I give it four stars because I wish the book were longer. I wanted to read more and more. Absolutely awesome.
Traditional Scandinavian Knitting.......2006-10-12
WOW! This is a great book. I just bought it after reading bits and pieces of it from a copy I borrowed from our library. It has Scandinavian, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and North Atlantic Islands (Facroe and Iceland). It has patterns for Jerseys, Gloves and Mittens, Stockings, and Caps. It also has a number of stitch patterns to use in your project. It's a wonderful book to add to your knitting collection.
Charts Galore.......2006-04-12
I think if you are looking for scandinavian charts you need to buy this book. It's a great price and although it's mostly in black and white, you are getting tons of charts.
Very good book at a very good price.......2006-01-31
I was surprised at how good this book was and at such a low price. I especially liked its big format and layout of course as the other reviewer says it doesn't have all the information but so far I haven't seen one knitting book that does. And that is the reason we buy so many books. It has 11 chapters, Chapter 1 origins of knitting in Scandinavia, 2nd Types of knitting traditionally used in Scandinavia, 3rd Knitting techniques from Scandinavia, 4th Norwegian Knitting, 5th Swedish knitting, 6th Danish knitting, 7th The North Atlantic islands Faeroe and Iceland, 8th Jerseys, 9th Gloves and mittens, 10th Stockings, 11th Caps. There is also a glossary of English and Scandinavian knitting terms, Knitting needle sizes, further reading and an index. It has a few pages of colored photographs of traditional Scandinavian sweaters, caps, and samples of colorwork. It has also more pictures in black and white. So I would recommend this book very highly.
good information, but not complete.......2005-01-23
This book would be excellent for someone who is looking to read a history of scandinavian knitting, but slightly less useful for someone who is looking to knit authentic tranditional scandinavian designs. While this book offers excellent information on scandinavian knitting, it often has just slightly less information than I would like to see. There are not enough pictures of knitted objects to get an idea of the range of items that were made in different places/times, and often there are not pictures of the original object to go with charted designs. Or, in some cases, the charted designs don't match the sample orignal object that is pictured. It has many colorwork charts, but they are scattered throughout the book, so it is sometimes difficult to find what you are looking for. I was not as impressed with this book as I was with her book on Fair Isle knitting.

The Perfect Baby Massage Book.......2007-06-04
Massage is important for everyone but especially for infants. After looking at a number of books, I was happy to find this one as gift for new parents. Its many black and white photos make learning to massage a baby look easy and natural. The book is clearly written, helpful, and well researched. If I had a new baby, I would love to receive this book.

Book Description
Originally designed in the late 1930's for Barbara Stanwyck by famous African American architect Paul Williams, Oakridge was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Oakie for more than fifty years. In this volume, Victoria Oakie reveals the history of that house (now on the California Register of Historic Places #484), its famous inhabitants, and the nostalgic times it stood for. The book is packed with over 100 black and white photographs taken at the home, many of them never before seen, and with the words of her late husband and others who were touched by the magic of this special place. From the silents to the talkies, from radio to television, Oakridge was the home not only to the Oakie's but host to an entire generation of entertainers, writers, directors, designers, and musicians.

See it before it's torn down!.......2007-03-10
Jack Oakie's Oakridge is full of pics and anecdotes of the great home currently at the corner of Devonshire and Reseda blvd. in Northridge, Ca. The 11 acres the property has been whittled down to is soon to be developed,so you better go see it NOW. Oakie's widow donated the home and property to USC before she died, with the understanding it would remain. Well, she's been gone about 4 years now, and the ungrateful jerks at USC have sold it to developers, who 'claim' (read 'lying through their teeth') the house will PERHAPS remain as a 'community center'. A community center for 11 homes to be built around?? Come on! This book is a wonderful reminder of how life could be before Starbuck's, Chevy dealers and mini malls surrounded the area. I myself have hopped the fence (book in hand) and matched shots w/ the book. The house was originally built in '35 for Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor, and was known as MARWYCK RANCH, after the horse breeding business Stanwyck had with her then manager, ZEPPO MARX. Originally over 100 acres, the house now sits forlornly overlooking the valley. See it before it's gone!
