Book Description

On December 15, 1990, Lieutenant Sean T. Coughlin left Norton Air Force Base, California. His destination: Saudi Arabia. For nearly six months, he served as a special staff officer with Marine Wing Support Group 37 (MWSG 37), Headquarters element. Throughout his deployment, Lieutenant Coughlin kept a detailed diary of his thoughts and actions. The boredom of the waiting, the dread of Scud attacks, the anticipation of the impending air and ground war, the camaraderie of the troops in the field, and the anticipation of going home-all are revealed. As a part of MWSG 37, the lieutenant gives a firsthand account how the unit set up air bases throughout Saudi Arabia.

4 out of 5 stars No war glitz: A picture of standard issue USMC life........2000-06-04

A well written book that depicts the "standard issue" life of the common marine during Desert Storm and in our present day military. No big battles, guts or glory. Just reality. Highly recommended for anybody wanting to get the "true" picture of military life.

What set this book apart from most of its type was how Sean opened the door to his insides and allowed us to see what was really going on with him, regardless if he thought it would make good storytelling.

A strong first showing for Mr. Caughlin.

Book Description

In 1983, Dr. David Hilfiker left his practice in rural Minnesota and began to practice poverty medicine in a ravaged community not far from the White House. Fascinating and deeply affecting, this is his elegantly written true story of that time. Previously published by Hill and Wang.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating account.......2001-01-24

Dr. Hilfiker's account is sad, rugged, and filled with faith and hope all at the same time! This doctor has set an example that would be worth following for doctors and nurses in the future who truly wish to make a difference in the world. Well-edited and sprinkled with humor this is a tremendously satisfying book to read. Well worth the money, this is legitimate inspiration. Hats of to Dr. Hilfiker and staff and may his tribe increase!

5 out of 5 stars I Found This Review On the Net.......1999-11-07

NOT ALL OF US Are Saints is a compellingly honest portrayal of both the brokenness of the people Hilfiker cares for day in and day out, and his intimate wrestlings with doubt, discouragement, and anger. The title speaks of the humility with which he approaches the task.

He confesses early in the book, while still living upstairs in Christ House:

"I live on the mainland of our society. No matter what route I choose, what decisions I make, I will always have a secure route back. The men downstairs live on an island, separated from me by waters deep and unbridgeable....

"The spiritual discipline of "voluntary poverty" has nothing in common with the oppression and despair of the ghetto. There is nothing beautiful or romantic in frostbitten toes or minds destroyed by alcohol, in lives crushed by the weight of indifferent history and cultural negligence....We betray those caught in [poverty's] web by romanticizing it or imagining that we-by divesting ourselves of some bits of our privilege-can choose to enter it. The landscape of poverty is inaccessible to most of us. We can barely imagine the scenery.

"But neither is it possible to live as a privileged person within the world of the very poor without undergoing some changes."

The stories Hilfiker relates about his patients are difficult to read. They start to sound tragically similar, and we are left longing for hope. But there are few "success stories" to tell, as anyone who is acquainted with the inner city knows.

Heartfelt--and heartrending--Not All of Us Are Saints paints a disturbing picture that America needs to see. It is important reading, both for those who have yet to have their eyes opened, and for those who live enmeshed in the issues with which Hilfiker daily struggles. It is honest, and truly courageous, guidance for the journey.

5 out of 5 stars This is MUST Reading.......1999-11-07

Dr. Hilfiker's book should be required reading of every medical student, physician, social worker, and minister. It should also be required reading of individuals and organizations, medical or not but especially medical, who in any way must brush up against or who work directly with the poor. An excellent read with profound implications.

4 out of 5 stars GRIPPING TALE OF A MAN WHO CARES.......1998-12-29

This book will make you want to do something to help those less fortunate. Although, I did not always agree with Hilfiker's assessments of situations and the individual's culpability in the status of his/her life, I do agree that poor people need more help than they are currently receiving in our society.

Hilfiker does a masterful job of avoiding the major pitfall of books in this vein. That is, each new case presented to the reader does not seem like a retread of the previous case. Another pitfall Hilfiker dodges is that his book is truly a journey, it is not a static snapshot of a couple of years on the front line. It begins with he and his family in one state of mind, and ends with them in another state of mind. To an extent, the reader experiences that journey with the Hilfiker family.

This is a very good book about a very important subject! It definitely makes me want to read more by Dr. Hilfiker.

5 out of 5 stars A sincere account of the poverty most of us choose to ignore.......1998-10-19

Dr. Hilfiker's book does not raise the problems of poverty in America as **an** issue to consider in modern medicine, but **the** issue. In a speech he gave at Baylor in 1996 concerning poverty medicine in our country's capital, he identifies poverty as the **first** issue, the most pressing moral dilemma of the century. Dr. Hilfiker's address at Baylor and his insightful book, are keenly focussed on the key issues of poverty. By way of telling individual case histories about real people, Dr. Hilfiker both reveals his struggles with poverty medicine and the heart of the issues of poverty itself. It is a heart wrenching book but well worth the time and effort to read. The persistent problem of inequality of services, medical attention, opportunity for jobs etc. that plagues our society unnoticed is a travesty. And though Dr. Hilfiker explores a few problems that stem from governmental neglect or cuts and bureaucratic misdirection, in large part he describes it as the rest of our individual selfishness and growing neglect of community. What the dilemma calls for is communal action, some kind of a societal effort. Even as an active practioner of poverty medicine, though, Dr. Hilfiker admits, "My work puts me in daily contact with poor people, but the fog between us most often seems impenetrable. Friendship - as one might normally define it - has not been possible, and a real understanding of who my patients are has, I suspect eluded me." If one who works daily with these people cannot assure us that he understands the full scope of the problem, than how can academics, politicians or legislators who make policy regarding such people, presume to know anything? There is that part of our culture today that lives from day to day wondering if they will still be alive tomorrow, not if religion and politics will ever come into a healthy realtionship. I think among other things this book calls us to a higher standard than just political rhetoric and debate, it calls us as citizens to get involved.

5 out of 5 stars NIA has changed my life.......2007-07-05

I started NIA 4 months ago. This book is an excellent supplement to the two classes a week that I take. NIA is an incredible fitness and spiritual experience and this book supports my participation.

5 out of 5 stars A Revolutionary and Pleasurable Dance Through Life.......2007-02-27

A friend discovered The NIA Technique (neuromuscular integrative action) while researching something to help her cope with difficult health problems. After the first class, we were sold on NIA with it's non-impact, yet aerobic, fluid dance, martial arts and healing arts moves. Nia stresses the joy of movement, and taking the path of least resistance to move "The Body's Way."

Our instructor, Kellie, stressed pleasure while moving. That intrigued us. We could achieve optimum effects with no more pounding or even low-impact aerobics, or repetitive motions on a machine. But how? Kellie suggested The Nia Technique by Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas for obtaining more background information than she could share during our hour plus class.

In The Nia Technique, Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas, the creators, share their story. In the 80's and 90's Debbie owned and operated a successful aerobics fitness center in California. Due to the high burn out and injury rates involved for the teachers and students, the Rosas set out to research fitness techniques that would eliminate injury and help heal and make fit the body, mind and soul. The culmination of their intense study and research is fusion fitness like no other, incorporating nine classic movement forms from martial arts (T'ai Chi, Ta Kwon Do, Aikido), dance (jazz, modern and Duncan), and the healing arts (Yoga, Feldenkrais, and Alexander) using 52 specific movements.

Besides the history of the creation of The NIA Technique, this book gives detailed descriptions of all the movements, along with wonderful testimonials in every chapter of people who have experienced everything from alleviation of severe pain, to weight loss, to the ability to self-heal from a variety of unhealthy situations and circumstances.

I doubt that I would have been able to do perform the Nia Technique from reading the book alone. But it is a very helpful tool in understanding the movements and what the intentions are behind them. After reading and receiving more knowledge and wisdom of the history and creation of The Nia Technique, I am even more enamored of my classes, and in every move I make not only in class, but in my dance through everyday life.

Whether you are totally fit or flab, "The Nia Technique" can give you instant motivation. Learn all about Nia and how it can enhance your fitness. The only draw back, to learn the moves, I needed to get the DVD. The book will motivate to get you going.

I have been involved with Nia for only a short time, but I know that it will be a long-term part of my life. It is an amazing process, not only physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. I have bought quite a few copies of this book and given them away to friends as a way invite them to check out the experience. It is very well done, and a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars Good Food and Healthy Both at the Same Time.......2005-11-02

It is possible to eat well and healthy at the same time and that's what this book is about. The experts (doctors and dietitians) at the Mayo Clinic with the experts at Williams-Sonoma have come up with a grand cookbook full of delicious, but sometimes not so easy to make, recipes that won't tax your heart at the dinner table. The method here stresses a variety of foods, low on the bad ones, high on the good ones (you know what they are) in the recipes.

Cooking Clinic sidebars such as choosing vinigars, broth alternatives, discovering cornmeal, a guide to pasta shapes and even sidebars on oranges and tomatoes, help to both inform and keep the book interesting. The superb color photos of the finished dishes, makes it hard to choose what to prepare, they all look so good. I consider myself a good cook who has several original recipes under her belt that I used to write about in a cooking column. But even though I pride myself in my originality, I've gone to this book on several occasions and have never been disappointed.

Review submitted by Captain Katie Osborne

            4 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2005-06-23

This is one of my nicer finds. The name Mayo Clinic convinced me to look at it but the material convinced me to buy it. I won't give it a four because for our diet it is too high fat, HOWEVER, the recipes are easily modified.

The book contains general information esp good for beginning cooks concerned about their diet and food choices. How to draw up a menu, how to meet nutrition guidelines in that menu, how to cook different foods for max benefits, cooking methods are in the information section. It doesn't overwelm the beginner and is a good reminder for the advanced cook.

The recipes are good bases for me. I always modify everything by reducing fat or adding herbs and spices that I cook so they don't taste exactly the same as the book. My firm rule is taste it and modify if you don't like it. Tastes vary. The recipes included teach. There is a nutrition blub with hints or a cooking blurb with hints next to most of the recipes. They all include nutrition information.

            On my keeper shelf.

            4 out of 5 stars Overall excellent...minor design issues.......2003-07-31

First, this cookbook won a julia child cookbook award. That is always a good sign. The book is a large book with glossy wipe-able pages (something I love in cookbooks). It lies fairly flat altho with its paperback binding I am sure after lying flat a number of times on the same page, its bound to crack. It lies fairly flat towards the middle of the book altho at either end, its more of a challenge.

The beginning is a guide to healthful eating with a focus on fresh ingredients, moderate to low fat and lower sodium. Some dishes would be very hard to fit into a low carb life style as that isnt the focus..altho if you were low carbing with more of a focus on watching your glycemic index this book would work out much better.

There are many color pictures of the dishes. Most full page and opposite the recipes. There is a bit of an intro prior to the recipe. Sometimes about why a cooking method was chosen or about an unusual ingredient. Along the side of the pages are snipits called *cooking clinic* about how to choose produce, or how to preform a technique etc...or a *nutrition note* about a specific ingredient.

The layout of recipes is ingredients down one side and cooking method down the other. I prefer ingredients on top and cooking at the bottom. I find it less confusing but it is a personal preference. The recipes take up the whole page so the size of the font and layout puzzles me a bit. It could have been much bigger and easier to read...there is half a page of blank space on a considerable number of pages. When Im cooking I dont want to be switching back and forth with my reading glasses all the time......That said, they are fairly easy to read.

I have tried an enjoyed several soups. Chicken and orzo, lentil, and split pea. They were all very good! Most people, I think would be used to more salt and could add it if necessary. The roasted pepper sauce is very good. There is a recipe for lime scallops with orzo that I made with shrimp instead. It was really very good also.. Its quite low in sodium but the tang of the lime dims your need for the salty flavor. I didnt miss it with this one.

There is a section on what they call finishes... and they classify them as breakast-y, brunch-y...even a dessert. But they really have more of an appeal as a breakfast item. Whole wheat popovers with prune puree wont float the boat of many of my guests, frankly. Other more reasonable dessert choices woule be some of their fruit options.

Over all a very good book, with some minor design flaws. I can see this book fitting in to a number of popular diet plans as well as for the person who would just like to add a few more halthful items to their menus

4 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner cook.......2003-06-03

I first viewed this book in-store and fell in love with the pictures and the luscious sounding food. A few weeks later I ordered a copy and immediately began using it. With a couple of exceptions, everything I've made from this cookbook has been a little off, flavor-wise. Although I still love this cookbook, I use it as more of a guide, since I know I will have to make some modifications in order for the food not to be bland. I do not recommend this book for anyone who is somewhat uncomfortable in the kitchen or just learning to cook. With the blandness that I've found in many of the recipes, an inexperienced cook may believe they've done something wrong or be afraid to experiment. But if you love having a basic recipe and then making it your own, I would recommend this, as it has definitely helped me cook more healthy foods.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic healthy recipes...but watch that pepper!.......2002-11-22

The Mayo Clinic Cookbook was given to me as a gift from a friend who also loved it. The recipes have comprehensive nutrition analyses, and a color picture of every dish showing the individual portion size. This is very helpful, you can browse through and see what you're in the mood for. Their preparation times don't seem to correspond to a home kitchen, I wouldn't rely on them. The recipes are all very tasty, but I have found that the assortment of spices they use are very limited. They use black pepper to an extreme. I no longer use a recipe straight from the book without analysing the spices they suggest first. Changing the flavoring with different spices does not affect the nutritional value of the recipe, it just allows you to adapt the flavor to your individual palate. I have been able to control my blood pressure, reduce my blood cholesterol, lose weight, and save money, all by using this cookbook exclusively for three months. Try it. I'm back here to buy three more to give to friends this Christmas!

4 out of 5 stars Great Cook Book - Great Recipes.......2005-11-19

I read the other more critical reviews of this book on Amazon and I'm surprised. I love this cook book. The recipes are easy, fast and really tasty. The ingredients are easy to get and if you don't have fresh, you can use frozen or dried (such as herbs). I love the book and have recommended it to friends who were equally satisfied.

            2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-06-21

Everything I have tried in this cookbook is terrible. From fish to chicken, soup to breakfast. Poor, bland flavoer. All of the recipes are a LOT more trouble than they are worth. MANY other healthy cookbooks out there with MUCH tastier recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Non-fat fads - is there an end to it?.......2001-07-23

There are lots of wonderful recipes in this beautifully edited book, my only concern is the use of non-stick sprays instead of real and HEALTHY fats. I just wonder when this whole fat scare will end - are we to believe that using artificial but low - fat products is going to make us healthy? Otherwise, a very enjoyable cookbook....

5 out of 5 stars Great tasting healthy food........2001-02-06

Wow! If you want great tasting healthy food this is an excellent resource. The recipes use great combinations of spices that are completely satisfying. Despite the perceived "restriction" of eating healthy there is no restriction on taste or texture. On top of this, the recipes have been quite simple to make. This cookbook has been a welcome addition to our home/health.

4 out of 5 stars Want to cook healthy and fast?.......2000-07-24

This is your book. Most of the items take 15 to 20 minutes to prepare and then 30 minutes of cooking time. Unlike other cookbooks, particularly vegan or vegetarian cookbooks, the recipes use easy to obtain ingredients that you can get anywhere. This is key in the short preparation time.

If you have kids, and want them to get a wide variety of vegetables or make them a meal that combines certain nutritional necessities, the book discusses foods, portions, and servings for a variety of different health needs. It also tells you exactly what's good and bad about different foods.

For instance, an avocado has three times the amount of potassium as a banana.

This book was written by Elyne Mitchell and i can tell you she's the greatest. Anyways, this book is filled with talking horses but that's OK for this once.
Thowra is born out of the rare creamies mare and a proud strongest strongest chestnut stallion. Bel Bel knew he would be hunted so she woved a spell naming him Thowra of the wild wind of the night in the storm when he was born. He and his friend Storm stayed through all of their years together. Even through adulthood. When The Brogla was in prime of his life, he has defeated and killed Yarraman, Thowra's father. But he stole another creamy off The Man and soon he was famous. He was tried to be caught and tamed, but because he had a smart, wise and cunning mother and a strong and handsome father, he was unbeatable. Other stallions wanted to kill him.He also grew faster, cunning and stronger so strong was able to defeat The Brogla! So then he was the King of the Cascade Brumbies. He kept Golden and couple of his prized mare in the Secret Valley. Then in a legendary chase, Thowra the wild wind disappeared over the cliff and people thought that he ran to his death. THOWRA RULZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the other little edition that was great too.

I totally recommanded this book to all ages and to the horse-lovers.

Until Thowra grew strong, he fought and won as King of the Cascade brumbies! and i recommended this book to anyone at all that loves horses or wild horses. Read this book and you'll love it!!!!!!!

            Book Description

In Wild Echoes, environmentalist and photographer Charles Bergman chronicles his experiences tracking down and interacting with the few remaining members of nine of North America's most endangered species. Bergman soars in the company of two of the last remaining California condors, swims with manatees, assists in the capture and release of a Florida panther, and comes face to face with the last remaining dusky seaside sparrow, a species now extinct.

As he relates these and other poignant encounters, Bergman describes the factors, both manufactured and natural, that have led to the animals' endangerment. He also examines the efforts of those who hope to pull species back from the brink of extinction. Wild Echoes was originally published in 1990; this 2003 edition contains a new introduction and substantial updates on the good news and the bad concerning the current status of the species Bergman discusses.

            5 out of 5 stars A must-read classic.......2006-07-01

I've read Bergman's book twice over the past decade. It is beautifully written, and demonstrates detailed research as well as a real love of the environment and animals. Anyone who cares about nature should read this book. Bergman was ahead of his time when he wrote it.

4 out of 5 stars Largely outdated, but provides good historical information........2004-04-08

I'm not sure exactly how to rate this one - I've been hedging between a 3.5 and a four, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt and going with a four. For the time it was published (originally in 1990), it's probably a four-star book. What Bergman has done here is compiled his personal experiences with nine different endangered species (all North American). He's devoted a chapter to each: the wolf, the dusky seaside sparrow (now extinct), the California condor, the Florida Panther, the manatee, the Puerto Rican parrot, the black-footed ferret, the North Atlantic right whale, and the ivory-billed woodpecker (possibly extinct in North America). In each chapter Bergman gives us both a personal account (he has seen all of the above listed species in the wild except the dusky seaside sparrow, the last individuals of which were in captivity at the time, and have since died), and then explains both the history and current status of the species and what, if anything, is currently being done to help save it.

However, having been written in 1990, much of the "current" information is vastly outdated (particularly on the wolf and condor), so if you want the latest news, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. Steve Grooms's "Return of the Wolf" is an excellent and comprehensive text on wolves, and while it too is a bit outdated, having been written in 1999, it is more recent than "Wild Echoes" by far, and much more factual. Lots of the information on wolves that Bergman provides here is either no longer true, or wasn't true at the time and has since been proven false (and, ironically, Bergman concentrates almost entirely on wolves in Alaska - the only place in America where wolves are NOT endangered). However, the historical background provided for each animal is very good (and quite interesting!), making this book more suited for historical study than as a reference on current events.

One other thing that concerns me is the philosophical side of Bergman's writing. He often writes in circles, and while I can understand and empathize with the gut responses he has to certain animals' situations, in the text he frequently contradicts himself. He says that when humans talk of "saving endangered species," it separates humans from other animals and gives us power over them, and he rails against this mentality, and yet he still emphasizes most strongly that we need to save them. He both rails against biologists, and alternately praises them hightly. Bergman also argues that starting captive breeding programs for severely endangered species is just another power-trip for humans, but does (almost grudgingly) admit that they do some good. And the most contradictory, he says: "I don't want more commonness. I want more of the rare" (pg. 240). He does not seem to recognize the fact that, once we have more of the species that are now rare, they will no longer be rare and will then be "common" themselves. Bergman also states in one chapter that today's culture is responsible for all endangered species. I understand what he meant, but it was poorly stated, considering that many, many species went extinct for various reasons before humans even existed.

But as I said before, outdatedness and philosophical loops aside, this is still a very worthwhile read for anyone interested in the history of these endangered species. Bergman has obviously done a great deal of research. The author's personal encounter stories are also interesting. The book is well-written and easy to read, with vivid and touching imagery (though I must admit I found Bergman's description of the right whale's body shape as "unavoidably phallic" (pg. 216) to be a less-than-attractive analogy, though he seems to have meant it as a compliment). The book also includes black-and-white photos of some of the species discussed, an appendix listing extinct species of the United States, and a second appendix with contact information for many wildlife advocacy groups. Though this is certainly not a definitive work on endangered species, it is nonetheless informative, interesting, and well worth the read.

                      2 out of 5 stars Postmodern cant.......2004-04-08

                      A disappointment. Here's a book on wild
animals, those extinct and those nearly so,
something we should all care about. The author
traveled extensively to interact with some wild
animals, or at least with people who interact
                      with wild animals.

And what happens? Bergman simply can't leave
behind his postmodern pinhole view of the world.
He sees people trying to save nearly extinct
species, protecting the existing animals, and
asks: what is the MEANING of it? And his
answer: a foucaultian rant on power over nature.

With respect to the effort to save the North
American condor, he says that because the condors
live in zoos, "this is the central paradox, we also
demystify the creature. The condor lives the life
of a secret, but the zoo, run by vets and bureaucrats,
steals its strangeness and makes it a creature we
                      can train."

He continues to rail against the rationalism of
science: "We can't expect biologists and
bureaucrats to solve our problems. We need a
revolution of consciousness. That's why I believe
in desire and passion, make my attacks upon the
sovereignty of reason, look for answers in the
shadows and the gaps in our knowledge -- and in
                      endangered species."

That sums it up. Bergman's bogeymen are bureaucrats
and scientists. It's too bad he decided to embellish
such a serious topic with postmodern cant that
                      French philosophers discarded years ago.

It's dangerous to blame too many of our behaviors and tendencies on raging hormones. We are, after all, creatures of free will. But after reading Theresa Crenshaw's book, you'll never again see your free will as being all that free. The book functions as both an encyclopedia of our attachment-related hormones, telling us exactly what they are and exactly what modern science thinks they do, and a guide to what we can do to get them to keep functioning the way we want them to.

                                  Book Description

Are you in charge of your love life?

If you think so, you're wrong -- hormones control our sex drives and direct our love lives. In The Alchemy of Love and Lust, Dr. Theresa Crenshaw, a renowned sex therapist and researcher, unmasks the hidden agendas of our hormones as we progress through different sexual stages -- from adolescence through old age.

Along with well-known hormones, Dr. Crenshaw introduces lesser known but potent influences that make up our "sex soup." The effects of these chemicals working together and individually offer insight into some compelling issues:

Romantics needn't worry that science will eliminate the mystery of attraction. To the contrary, this program helps us discover romance, rekindle it, and keep it alive. Filled with often surprising information, The Alchemy of Love and Lust explains the effects of our sex hormones and gives us specific, practical suggestions on how to monitor them.

5 out of 5 stars The Alchemy of Love and Lust.......2007-02-22

THis is a fantastic book with information that everybody NEEDS to know. It will greatly improve your understanding of relationships and hopefully your quality of life as you get older. The book is very well researched and very descriptive - though it can be quite difficult to take in all the info at times. However - there are very useful summaries at the end of each section in each chapeter which summarise the main points.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely revealing and a great read.......2006-03-18

Do you want to know what makes men and woman tick?, how they work on the inside?, what chemistry really is? - then look no further. This book is extremely revealing in that ive learnt that even an intimate cuddle can produce a chemical called oxytocin. And thats not all your learn. You will learn much more than a few buzz words in this book, what they are, how they are generated by the body and affected by external elements too - I highly recommend it to anyone that is even the slightest curious about all those feel good chemicals that our bodies produce during cuddling, menopause and even orgasm - its all in here. I found this an excellent book and companion resource for my NLP and psychology study.

5 out of 5 stars understanding hormones influence in Love.......2002-11-10

Everyone should read this book before they think they are madly in love. It will help anyone discern whether it is the chemistry of our hormones or real love, or maybe both. In our lives it is often "hard to see the forest for the trees". This would help alot of people avoid making life mistakes.

2 out of 5 stars Chemical determinism is not enough.......2001-12-15

The author of this book contributes interesting material on the important biochemicals (dopamine, estrogen, progesterone, LHRH, testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin, and others) that influence and help to regulate the universe we think of as "human sexuality." You will learn more than a few things. It seems that a working knowledge of high levels of testosterone can teach us quite a lot. (Women, proceed with caution!)

Unfortunately, she neglects other factors (and there are so many that make up human choices in love and sex: psychology, for example - and whether or not a couple has a single thing besides the kids to talk about after twenty-five years of marriage) that for me the information loses any authority it might have had.

In addition, she has an ax to subtly grind, and it is that men and women in their fifties (and older) have the very best chance for sexual compatability - for a set of specific chemical and biologically determined reasons. This information would seem to argue for couples staying together, but as we know, there are many other factors beyond sexual compatability (which is often fully present in couples who are literally coming apart - in every other way) that must contribute to couples' happiness - not to mention fidelity.

This book has interesting information about biochemicals' influence on our sex and love lives. You will doubtless recognize yourself and your mate in some of her descriptions, but as science it should be taken with a large grain of salt.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Chemical Bonding..........2001-05-05

The insight of how the range of hormones effects the F/M relationship was wonderful! Hormones is what makes love happen...It explains how these hormones control our thought, how we perform, and the part they play in our associations from birth on up. This book also gives information about Progesterone's and Estrogens and the use of these in Hormone Replacement Therapy. It helps you see and understand the actual chemical bonding which happens between F/M.

I found this book to be a HUGE eye opener to the amazing way our bodies function in a primal order for a purpose which we have little control over. To actually learn about the chemical responses that make women want to nest after sex and men want to flee was fasinating. IT'S NOT PERSONAL, IT'S PRIMAL! It was humorus to discover that all the pyschology in the world isn't going to change basic biology. THIS is what sex education classes should be about.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing background on Red Dwarfs star.......2000-04-01

This book is rather amazing. No Irish, No Niggers is theautobiography of comedy performer and star of "Red Dwarf",Craig Charles. It goes on to tell about his RSC years, his comedian lifestyle and a bit about "Red Dwarf". On another note it goes beyond and leads into the somewhat darker side of Craigs life, including addictions to drugs and other interesting things not many people know of. Craig is also the author of a book of his own poems called No Other Blue, of which is a great addition to his "Lighter" side. Compared to some autobiographies this one is somewhat interesting, don't know why but its rather fascinating all the same
